Caring for Elderly Pets ust like us humans, our pets age, and just like humans, as they age they become susceptible to more ailments.
Check your pet regularly for changes in behaviour or appearance that could indicate the onset of illness or disease. Reduced activity could be a sign that your pet is in pain, perhaps due to arthritis. This can be eased by gentle massage, but dogs also need to continue to exercise in order to keep the joints free, although too much exercise can cause more harm than good. If they’re less active, your pet might gain weight - resulting in additional health problems. This can be remedied by decreasing their calorie intake. Some elderly pets experience a loss of appetite – perhaps due to a reduction in their sense of taste or smell - that could result in weight loss. Encourage eating by offering smaller meals more regularly, by gently warming the food and by ensuring it is fresh. Your pet also needs a quiet, undisturbed place to eat. Older pets are more susceptible to heart and lung disease. Signs include coughing, wheezing, breathing difficulties and general weakness. Bumps, lumps and swellings may indicate cancer and if your pet becomes incontinent or starts to urinate more frequently, this could be due to changes in the urinary tract, prostrate or other body systems. In all cases, the sooner problems are spotted, the better the chance of successful treatment, so consult your vet promptly.
speak up! If your pet starts bumping into things, tends to stay closer to the wall than usual and follows closely on your heels, their sight may be failing. Eye problems include infections, cataracts, decreased night vision and blindness. Watch out for eyes that discharge, look discoloured, cloudy or glassy. You can help your pet cope by keeping the environment familiar – don’t move furniture around! Keep an eye on their teeth and if you notice any swelling of the gums take them to the vet as gum disease, in addition to causing tooth decay, could result in infections being passed into the blood which could cause damage to organs already less efficient and less able to resist infection. Finally, remember to keep your pet warm in winter. If you are cold, chances are they are too, so put a sweater on both of you! Having an elderly pet isn’t all doom and gloom. Ageing is part of life, and with lots of love, care, patience and regular visits to the vet, there is no reason why you and your pet shouldn’t enjoy getting old together! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
Of course, not all conditions are lifethreatening. Ear infections are common in dogs and signs include a discharge from the ear, persistent head shaking and pawing. If your pet is already hard of hearing, an infection could make this worse, so be sure to make allowances and

The Ryder Cup
he Ryder Cup (officially the Ryder Cup Matches) is a biennial golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is also the name of the trophy, after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder. The Ryder Cup, and its counterpart the Presidents Cup, are unusual in the world of professional sports, since despite being high-profile events that bring in tens of millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship revenue. The players receive no prize money. The 2012 contest will take place on 28, 29 and 30 September at Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois. The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 between a team comprising American professionals against a similar one drawn from the British PGA on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. The first competition took place in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, repeated US dominance[3] led to a decision to extend the representation of the British and Irish[4] team to include continental Europe in 1979. This change was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers of the time, including Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido, who, in 1979, became the first Spaniards to play in the event. Since then, Team Europe has included players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. Since 1979 Europe has won eight times outright and retained the Cup once by tying, with seven American wins over this period.
12
Following on from the drama of Celtic Manor in 2012, which saw Europe defeat the United States by 14½ to 13½, all eyes turn towards Medinah Country Club for the 39th edition of the Ryder Cup. Located approximately 40 minutes from central Chicago, Medinah is one of golf’s most iconic venues. The championship number 3 course at Medinah is rich in tournament pedigree having played host to three US Open’s and two USPGA Championships. Medinah is also famous for its stunning clubhouse which forms the impressive centrepiece of this superb venue. When the Ryder Cup crosses the Atlantic for the 2012 Match, it couldn’t be going to a venue that contrasts more sharply with Celtic Manor. From a new course built with the Ryder Cup in mind, the competition will be staged at one of America’s true classics, built in the roaring twenties by a group of wealthy golf-mad businessmen. Medinah Country Club, near Chicago, remains one of America’s finest and it has hosted US Opens, US PGA Championships, Western Opens and Chicago Opens. In 2010 Europe regained the Ryder Cup by the most slender of margins at Celtic Manor, with Graeme McDowell clinching the vital winning point from the USA’s Hunter Mahan on the 17th green to win 14½-13½. It was arguably the best Ryder Cup in years and it has set the scene for a thrilling encounter on US soil, when Spanish legend Jose Maria Olazabal is expected to lead the team.

Make Small Bigger
e all wish our living space was bigger. But you don’t have to move house. A bit of creative thinking may be all you need.
Declutter – Clear everything out the space you want to enlarge. Go through paperwork and only keep essential stuff. Give away or sell unused items and duplicates. Only move things back into the space if that have a place and a purpose.
Supersize! – Placing one larger feature piece of furniture in a small space sounds counterintuitive, but it provides a focus and a talking point. The rest of the furniture should be slightly scaled down and lighter in colour, to create a feeling of space around the focal point. BE TIDY – Nothing destroys that airy feeling like mess! By Sarah Davey
Think Light – Light colours on walls and floors make a space seem airy. But don’t be dull. Use one strong accent colour on a wall or in an alcove to create a feeling of space within a space. Mirror Magic – An oversize mirror will instantly make a small space appear twice the size. Create storage – Use neat fitted handleless cupboards with flush doors to create a minimalist feel.

Forties Skin!
ntering the 40’s means significant body changes – skin included.
smokers develop vertical lines above their upper lip.
A variety of factors contribute towards changes for the 40’-something, fluctuating hormone levels and menopausal adjustments being the main culprits. Diminishing hormone levels mean keratinocytes are not replaced as quickly as before, so the epidermis becomes thicker and drier and the skin takes on a dull, uneven appearance.
Excessive alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods dilate blood vessels, giving a red/mottled appearance to the complexion. Long term use of harsh soaps and alcohol-based products can leads to weakening and dehydrating the epidermis, while hot baths and swimming are extremely drying to the skin. And to round off the causes, juggling an increasingly pressured work-life-family balance means stress levels and emotional turmoil reach their peak at this age, leaving skin looking dull, stressed and tired.
Four decades of facial expressions – frowning or raising eyebrows for example – begin to take their toll too. As elasticity wanes, forehead lines remain and laughter lines around the eyes become more pronounced. Vertical frown lines between the eyes become permanently etched and smile lines around the mouth stay there. Sleeping in the same position every night eventually develops permanent creases typically on the temples and cheeks. And as for smoking, well, the habit breaks down collagen and dehydrates the epidermis, so
16
However, all is not lost! Lots can be done – The resurfacing action and improved hydration of facial treatments will increase epidermal renewal rates, helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles. By your therapist creating a bespoke cleansing, hydrating, enriching and protection regime, this will help to prolong your skins beauty for as long as possible. Jenny Dunville

5 Top Interior Design Tips Light 1 In a dark room maximise the available daylight by making sure that your curtain pole covers more of the wall on either side of the window (say 40cm either side). That way, when the curtains are open they are covering the wall and not the window allowing daylight to flood in. 2 Alternatively if you have a roman blind, hang it on the outside of the window ideally 15- 20cm above the top of the window reveal. Again when the blind is up it will block out less light. Window Proportions 3 Wide short windows can sometimes look at little squat and too wide. Change the look by having full length curtains to balance this or if you like add a valance which is longer at the sides than in the middle. Inspiration 4 Have a look at the many great interiors magazines or check out room sets in Interiors Shops (At Atmospheric Interiors we change these regularly to show the new trends)
5 How about a wallpaper which you love as shown in our photo here which was used as the inspiration for this super stylish room. Alison Constantine Atmospheric Interiors of Mansfield

New Gym at Water Meadows Complex
he gym at the Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex is getting ready to open its doors following a massive refurbishment.
Work is underway at the gym to introduce new audio visual displays on cardio equipment, new resistance machines, a larger specialised fitness equipment area and redecoration. The new gym will reopen to the public on 11 August, followed by the official opening on 13 August. The rest of the leisure centre has remained open during the refurbishment. The upgrade is part of a £500k investment into Mansfield Leisure Centres. Oak Tree Leisure Centre will begin the refurbishment of its gym from 13 August and will reopen on 25 August. New Life Fitness equipment will be installed, along with virtual bikes. To celebrate the upgrade, an open weekend will take place on 25 and 26 August when people can try out the new facilities on offer. Fitness
classes and other activities will carry on as normal during the works, including the new body pump classes and the new indoor cycling classes. Meden Sports Centre gym reopened on 31 July following its redecoration and installation of further equipment to enhance the fitness offering at the facility. River Maun Recreation Centre’s gym has also received an upgrade. Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre’s gym will be undergoing its refurbishment during the 13 August and will reopen with its new equipment on the 14 August. The work has been scheduled to allow people access to gym facilities offered at other leisure centres, whilst each of the gyms are closed for refurbishment. Refurbishment works to Water Meadows reception area and new water features have already been completed. Brian Taylor, Chairman of the Mansfield District Leisure Trust, said: “This is an exciting time for the fitness facilities at Mansfield Leisure Centres and we hope to attract new people to the facilities with our new lower and more affordable pricing, including new rates for people over the age of 60, students, a low junior price and different packages available to reduce the monthly cost of our all inclusive membership. With the desire for more people to get fit following on from the Olympics, the facilities are geared up to welcome beginners to exercise and have fun. Whether it be walking, cycling, gym, rowing, swimming or gymnastics, we have something to inspire everyone during and following the games.” Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council said: “We have already seen a substantial amount of investment and work since the transfer of the management responsibilities in May and we look forward to continue working with the Mansfield District Leisure Trust to provide our residents, and those visiting from outside the District, with a quality experience when visiting our leisure centres.”

Leather Better
eather Better is a new business that specialises in restoring damaged leather so that it looks just as good as when it first left the showroom. Leather sofas, car upholstery, dining chairs and handbags, as well as other leather items, can all be restored to their former pristine glory. Handbags can even receive a change of colour. The types of damage that can be repaired include scratches, staining, cracks, fading from sunlight and small rips or tears. Owner, Rob Tyler, had his “light bulb moment” when a new kitten scratched his much loved and very expensive sofa at home. He looked around for someone to repair the damage and could find no one offering that service in the area. Extensive research revealed that the UK distributor of Morelli, the world’s leading manufacturer of ‘smart’ repair products, offered courses in leather restoration. One lengthy course later followed by the purchase of some very expensive specialist equipment later, he was ready to go. Rob offers his services throughout north Nottinghamshire and the majority
LEATHER BETTER
of work is carried out at your home or place of work. He is friendly and approachable and very knowledgeable on his chosen subject. He starts with some straightforward and honest advice about what can be achieved. Then he gives you a free, no obligation quote and he does offer good value for money; for example, the cost of refurbishing a damaged sofa is a tiny fraction of the cost of buying a new one. The first step in repairing the leather is to use a highly advanced piece of equipment called a spectrophotometer to precisely measure and calculate the colour and gloss levels of an unblemished bit of leather. Any stains or marks are then carefully removed and scratched or scuffed areas are polished smooth; the damaged area is then refinished in exactly the same colour as the original leather. The restored area is good as new and you really can’t see that it was ever damaged. If you have leather items that are not looking their best, why not call Rob and get him to work an inexpensive miracle. Leather Better 01623 237614 or 07785 299776 Find us on

Learn a Foreign Language
ollege evening classes start up again this month. Take the plunge and learn a new language. Here are five good reasons to enrol right now.
Make new friends - Languages require practice! It’s easier to talk to new people if you’re both concentrating on something other than how shy you are. Chatting in a foreign language is a good way to break the ice and get to know your classmates. Improve your English! - Learning a new language helps us understand tenses, prepositions, and all the other parts of speech we normally take for granted. As a result we speak and write more precisely. Many great writers were / are polyglots!
Join the global community – Most of the rest of the world does not speak English! As the world becomes smaller and more interconnected it’s easy to see that we’ll come into contact with more and more non-English speakers. A foreign language puts you at an advantage in business and personal relationships. Sense of accomplishment - Wouldn’t it be cool to tell people that you speak two or more languages? Not many people in this country can, so if you can pull it off you have a reason to be really proud of yourself. By Sarah Davey

Stoptober!
toptober is a Department of Health nationwide initiative which has been launched to encourage people to stop smoking during October. Helping people to stop smoking is vital if we are to reduce the health inequalities & improve the lives of people living in our area. New Leaf, the NHS Stop Smoking Service for Nottinghamshire County is wholeheartedly embracing this challenge, with a month of activities, promotions and competitions that have been planned in this multi-agency project. Smokers will be encouraged to set a quit date in October & those who are still smoke free 4 weeks later will be entered into a draw to win fabulous prizes. For example, a Nintendo DS, a Center Parcs Spa day, shopping vouchers, beauty gift sets, leisure centre passes and a signed photo of Rebecca Addlington to name just a few! Carol Goodwin an Advisor for New Leaf commented, “As a service we are really excited about Stoptober. We work hard
throughout the year to support people who want to stop smoking and No Smoking Day in March is always very popular, so it’s great that there is now another date in the calendar for people to focus on & it’s a month not just one day.”
No
Advisors will be on hand in various community locations throughout October, for example, Mansfield town centre, Idlewells shopping centre in Sutton, supermarkets and The Street at King’s Mill, to provide information, advice & register those who would like to quit. New Leaf can offer 12 weeks worth of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) for free to those who don’t pay for prescriptions and just a one off payment of £7.65 for those who do pay. The service can offer one to one or group clinics, text, email, or telephone support. They can be contacted on 0800 389 7712, or by texting ‘Leaf’ to 80800.

Health & Beauty Flossing
Choose your floss. If your teeth are close together, try a waxed version which slides easier between the teeth. Break off about 18 inches of floss, wind around the middle finger of each hand until 1-2 inches remain and pull tightly between the thumb and index finger. Using a gentle ‘rocking’ motion, guide the floss between the teeth until it reaches the gum line, then gently guide the floss up and down against the side of the tooth and under the gum line.
F
lossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gum line, which could cause gum disease and tooth decay. Recent research shows that diseased gums are responsible for the release of inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream, which can then contribute to heart disease. Flossing should form part of our daily dental hygiene routine, but to be effective needs to be done properly. Here’s how!
30
Using a clean section of floss, repeat for the next tooth and continue the process until all teeth have been treated, not forgetting to floss the side of the teeth at the back of your mouth! The jury is still out on whether it is best to floss before or after brushing, but the most important thing is to do it. It isn’t just good for fresh breath, it’s good for the health of your entire body!

36
the offer in conjunction with Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID) to encourage more people to visit the town centre. Cllr Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration, said: “Mansfield town centre has lots to offer including an exciting range of big name high street stores, smaller independent shops and a thriving market as well as the Palace Theatre, Mansfield Museum and lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. “I hope this offer will bring extra visitors into the area, encourage residents to shop local and will mean those that already visit Mansfield can afford to stay for longer.
