Editors Message Welcome to the November / December edition of the Spotlight on Tuxford and surrounding areas magazine. So here we go towards the run up towards Christmas. The clocks have gone back the dark nights are here and I can feel a difference in the temperature on my early morning runs. It is still a great time of year to make the most of all the local businesses offering amazing deals and seasonal activities. This November / December edition has been an exciting adventure for my-self putting that magazine together meeting more amazing people along the way. Featuring local businesses and some great events planned for Christmas. A must NOT miss for me is the Carol singing at the Mausoleum on the 3rd December 2pm, what a unique experience that is going to be! Local Appeal Looking forward to the New Year I have

signed up for the London Marathon and training is well on its way with me just completing the Worksop Half Marathon at the weekend. I am launching this appeal to find a worthy cause to run for locally to raise funds and put it back into our community, either helping a family raise money for a poorly childs treatment or respite etc. If you are aware of any one locally that would be grateful of the sponsorship please get them to get in contact. I have run for many of the larger charity’s which are all great causes of course but really would like to keep this as local as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. All of us at Spotlight magazines wish you a Happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to our 1st edition of Spotlight magazine in January 2017.

A True Local Love Story In 1807 Henry Pelham the 4th Duke of Newcastle, married Georgiana Mundy, a wealthy heiress. Together the couple had 14 children; 8 sons and 6 daughters, one daughter, Anna Marie died at the tender age of 14 years old. In 1822 during childbirth to twins Georgianna died, one child was stillborn, and the other, George survived just 2 weeks later. This being just 4 months after Anna Marie. The heartbroken Duke after losing four of his family in such a such time decided to build a church and mausoleum at Milton in the Duchess’s memory and instructed architect Robert Smirke to build the monument during 1824-1833 . When the new church was completed in 1833 it became the parish church, replacing All Saints Church in West Markham. The marble monument to Duchess Georgiana and her twin babies, designed by Sir Richard Westmacott with input from the Duke can be viewed at the Mausoluem today.

2017 RETFORD HALF MARATHON & FAMILY FUN RUN - SUNDAY 12TH MARCH 2017 Local club, amateur and fun runners are being encouraged to sign up for the 2017 Retford Half Marathon which is taking place on Sunday 12th March. The Annual event which is organised by Retford Athletic & Running Club, and also includes a popular Family Fun Run, attracts around 1,000 entrants each year including local runners, and many from across Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and further afield. The half marathon is also a regular fixture for many seasoned runners, and is also popular amongst those wanting to get in shape to take part in, and to complete their first half marathon. Due to growing demand, which saw the 2016 event sell out in January, for the 2017 event the race organisers have increased the entry cap to 1,200. This year, the half marathon is also hosting the 2017 Nottinghamshire AAA County Championships David Corbett, Race Director for the Half Marathon, said “The event has grown extremely well over the last few years, increasing from just over 300 runners in 2013, to 900 in 2016, and for the 2017 event we’re expecting a bumper turn-out of around 1,200 runners. Securing Retford Oaks Academy as the base for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 event is partly down to the success as the venue offers excellent facilities for runners and their supporters including indoor

18

registration, changing rooms, showers, indoor bag store, outdoor cycle store, hot & cold refreshments, waiting areas and ample car parking. It’s also enabled us to hold the entire fun run in a safe and secure traffic free environment. We are delighted that we will be using Retford Oaks again for the 2017 event”. A lot of runners also use the event to raise money for a variety of good causes. This year the organisers have teamed up with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, who will be the main charity partner. As well as many entrants to the half marathon and fun run running on behalf of Bluebell Wood, each half marathon entry fee includes a donation to the charity. With almost 300 entrants signed up already, the 2017 is set to be the biggest and best yet and the organisers are encouraging runners to sign up as soon as possible as the race is expected sell out again well before the day. Links to online and postal entry is available on the Retford AC website www.retfordac.co.uk The website and the event facebook page www.retfordac.co.uk/retfordhalf also include more information on the event including course maps, results and photos from previous races and example training plans. The entry fee for the half marathon is just £16 for UKA Affiliated runners, and £18 for Un-affiliated runners. (£2 extra on the day if places available). The fun run is free of charge to enter but each entrant must complete an online or offline entry form. The start time for the half marathon is 10am, with the fun run starting at approximately 10.15am.

Newark Community First Aid

Registered Charity Number 1152694 Newark Community First Aid is a charity formed in 2013, operated by volunteers for the benefit of the local community. The objectives of the charity are to provide first aid training, first aid cover at local events and associated work. To ensure that everyone can learn first aid and that every event can benefit from high quality first aid cover, we provide the vast majority of our services FREE of charge. Community Training One of our main objectives is to increase the number of people in the community with first aid skills so that more lives can be saved and suffering can be reduced. We therefore developed a programme of short (2½ hour) first aid courses aimed at developing key lifesaving skills. We have now completed our third year and are pleased to report that we have trained 2,281 local people on our FREE courses. We have held courses in Newark and 46 surrounding villages, ensuring our training is accessible to all. Our courses cover adult & paediatric life support and basic ‘home’ first aid.

22

As we enter our 4th year we would like to encourage many more people to attend. If you belong to a local community group, charity, sports club or simply have a group of friends who would like to receive FREE training please contact us to arrange your course. Event Cover Our volunteers provide first aid cover at local events every week of the year including Christmas Day, when we help the Salvation Army provide a meal and celebration for those less fortunate in our community. We provide cover to many sporting events such as rugby, football, cycling, athletics, netball and cross country running. We attend many equestrian events, village shows, music events such as Newark Blues Festival, Wellowfest and major events on Newark Showground such as the Nottinghamshire County Show and Robin Hood Country Show.
