Spotlight Magazine
Local Lonely Lives Spotlight on Tuxford and the surrounding area is more than just an advertising magazine! My mission back in August 2016 when starting as the editor of this new venture was to develop the publication and the purpose being for the local community to benefit in as many ways as possible. To search local trusted businesses, diary dates, learn about our local History, find out about lifelines within the villages, local charity needs, events and to support anyone locally in need. With the launch of ‘This Mornings’ 1 million minutes campaign it got me thinking about our local residents I have come across whilst out delivering the Spotlight editions over the months and I have found one elderly gentleman who sits in his garage wrapped up in hat gloves and scarf just looking out onto the street getting some fresh air. I see the same elderly ladies sat in the same positions month on month through their lounge windows as if they haven’t moved. I ask myself, when did they last have some company? Whilst these people may be surrounded by family, friends and loved ones, I am sure there are residents that are local lonely lives within our community. With this in mind, I feel I would like to support these people and set up our own local charity ‘Local Lonely Lives’. Local Lonely Lives core vision is to be of a charitable benefit to our local community by reducing loneliness within our Community. So the launch of the charity requires the following;
Two additional trustees, to help run and strategically organise the development and growth of the Charity. Caring people who have 10-30 minutes spare a week to either make a regular phone call each week to some one lonely, visit them for a cup of tea and a chat. Donations of tea, coffee and sugar. And of course we need to seek out the people who will benefit from our charitable service. If you feel lonely and know a phone call, or a visit with a cup a tea and a chat would brighten your life we need to hear from YOU. All telephone calls are totally confidential and there is no shame in asking for help, so please pick up the phone if this is you we would love to hear from you. If you feel you have the time and compassion to help within our local community please get in contact. Email dawn@spotlightlocal.co.uk Tel 01636 904952

Well a lot has happened since our November / December edition, America has a new President, Donald Trump, a bit like marmite, you either love him or hate him ! Tuxford has had its Christmas market, Milton Mausoleum held its carol service and the snow threatened to come early November but never appeared So what does 2017 mean to you??? Did you make that New Years Resolution like previous years to find all your good intentions lasted a couple of weeks? Stopping smoking, losing those extra pounds put on over the festive season, changing bad habits. Our featured articles and some key businesses enclosed are to help you achieve whatever you desire! If you did not make a resolution for yourself but would like to do more for charity this year we have two great local stories within this edition. Timothy Dickson from Tuxford is in serious need of a new bed to help with his life threatening condition (Page 8) and I am running a Marathon for Macmillan Cancer research. New Years Resolution, mid life crisis or pure madness, or possibly all 3 ! I have chosen 2017 to run with the Macmillan Team in the Brighton Marathon 2017 and be part of something bigger and be able to give back.
6
I will have the run of my life both physically and mentally as I have arthritic feet so this will be a massive challenge for me and one not to take lightly. With the highest level of support from the Macmillan team for my first and last marathon I apprehensively keep clocking up the miles. I turn 50 in May and on my bucket list was the London Marathon but unfortunately could not get a place so I opted for the next one available a couple of weeks before on the 9th April. Training started in October last year and to date is going well and I have been told a well-deserved sports massage is waiting for me at the end. But more importantly with every step I will help Macmillan change the lives of people affected by cancer for the better now and far into the future. We can all be part of the team by sponsoring me at www.justgiving.com/Dawn-Johnson01. There will also be raffle tickets on sale at local outlets: The Sun Inn Tuxford, Retford Auto Electricals,

Can You Help Timothy
Can you help to buy a new bed to stop Tuxfords Timothy coming to any harm? The loan of a specialist travel bed means a severely autistic four-year-old boy from Tuxford won’t come to any harm during the night, but he urgently needs his own bed to ensure his long-term safety. As well as having autism, Timothy Dickson, from Tuxford, has development delay, no awareness of danger and sensory processing disorder which makes it difficult for him to make sense of the world around him.
equipment, which costs £6,580, but £4,386 is still needed. Described as a room within a room, the type of specialist bed Timothy needs creates a safe place with soft sides so that he can’t hurt himself, and allows Laura and James much needed peace of mind that their son is safe. Laura said: “Timothy is incredibly endearing and as he has big blue eyes, grins like there’s no tomorrow and has learned stock phrases to make people happy - people don’t see beyond it.
He also has a condition called pica, which causes him to eat non-food items such as sand, soil and material.
Newlife is appealing for donors and fundraisers to help transform Timothy’s everyday life.
Significant sleep difficulties mean Timothy only sleeps for three hours each night and as he would run around his bedroom, eat carpet, climb on furniture and radiators and unlock the window.
To find out how you can support Timothy, go to www.newlifecharity.co.uk/nottinghamshire.
His parents Laura and James would sleep on the landing so they would know as soon as he was awake.
Alternatively, contact the Newlife County Liaison Team on 01543 431 444, email local@newlifecharity.co.uk.
However, the bed on loan from Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children has already made a huge difference to the lives of the whole family – including his 19-year-old sister, Jenni, who has Asperger syndrome. Now the charity is looking for donations to fund a permanent specialist bed for Timothy. Newlife already has £2,194 towards this vital piece of

WHAT do you think is an often asked question ? So much news much of it appears bad because good news isn’t news to the media. People refusing to watch the news!! More good things happen in society than bad when you realise all the little kindnesses shown each day This is your chance to say what you think about National and Local issues. The recent cases of Child Abuse have sickened everyone following the Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris cases. The shocking behaviour of the press and disgraceful activity in both Houses of Government. How can we improve our society? What can I do to make a difference? What do you think? Let us look at our own Villages. Lonely people, sick people, broken people and homeless Folk with depression due to modern pressures. Broken Families, teenagers fearing for their futures. Full dangerous prisons and empty churches. Rome burned while Nero fiddled. Are we burning away our Heritage while we fiddle with poor standards forgotten principles of honesty integrity and service. Just look at the NHS. Doing amazing work is High Tec matters but failing, it appears from recent reports, to manage the daily care with money wasted on over management. Share your story both Good and Poor. Many feel the Institutions that have stood for generations are being attacked with Political correctness gone mad. Book to read “The Establishment” giving much inside information that shock and infuriates. It shows how we are losing our way in so many ways.

Enough of what others are doing. What about you and me. Can we honestly say that we are doing our best at all times to give a clear lead? Tax evasion, a National sport I am told, turning decent people into thieves. Children being left to their own devices without the time given to lay sound foundations. Marriage and the family under attack from all sides. Sex Education in Schools far too revealing for 7 and 8 year olds. You do need to make yourself aware of what is being proposed and then act. Voluntary organisations short of Volunteers for Youth Clubs, Visiting the Lonely and Depressed. Creating a meeting point to encourage community action. I became aware of this magazine recently and found it was prepared and printed by a lady at no profit with the hope it would encourage new action WHAT DO YOU THINK? Are you prepared to look at what you can do together with others in our society. Every talent needed to make changes is available through us. Are we willing to give some time and thought for 2017 AND THEN ACT Write in and have your say. Make your suggestions. Say what you are prepared to do. A Good response will lead to a public meeting to talk it through. We can’t wait for others we must become the people who start the move and take the responsibility. NO Don’t switch off at this point become a doer not a talker Written by David Ward on behalf of St Nicholas Church Tuxford

A New Years Resolution
Is a commitment a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or in the spirit of reforming a habit. Generally, people commit themselves to a New Year’s resolution for the entire year, with the goal of achieving a healthier and well balanced lifestyle. The nature of New Year’s resolutions has changed during the last decades, with many resolutions being more appearanceoriented (i.e. body image, diet, exercise, etc.) than in previous times. This month’s magazine has all the articles to help you achieve which ever goal you set yourself and to succeed this year for once and for all! Listed above are the most common New Year’s resolutions. Do they look familiar? Can your resolution positively and profoundly create lasting change in your life and help to make you the person you want to be? Remember to make your resolutions SMART by making sure that they are: • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Realistic • Timely Remember to believe in yourself and stay positive about your progress. Sharing your resolutions with a friend or family member can help you be accountable or a vision board is my

favourite and pictures of where you started to remind you NOT to go back there. Be flexible, remember setbacks happen, don’t let this dampen your momentum. If you need help, ask your loved ones for support. My little tips that have worked for me – In my diary I colour code each activity to see if I have the work, home and leisure balance right. Example- red for work, blue for home, green for leisure. A visual check will automatically show you if you are doing too much of one thing and not enough of another. Don’t go shopping when hungry – Helps avoid the junk food. Plan the year ahead. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. I enter all the races I want to run and then I am committed. Holidays, places to visit also, something to look forward to. Challenge yourself to something new every year. Either educational or something off that bucket list! Set yourself monthly rewards, special treats, not cream cakes! A day at the Spa etc. Make a vision board of all the things to achieve that year. If you can see it you can do it ! Finally, reward and celebrate your successes!

Laxton 2 Knowhow 2 Man Of The Match Tony Davies Laxton came from behind twice to salvage a point against Know-how reserves. Laxton started off pressing forward with Tony Davies being bought down in the area and Know-how caught on the break with a long ball over the top which Paul Williams tipped onto the post but it wasn’t enough to keep out the goal. Laxton after many of chances went in at 1-0 down at half time. A long ball from Paul Williams left Tony Davies on to bend it round the keeper. Knowhow then made it 2-1 with a cross to the back post where a player left on
his own put the ball in the back of the net. With 15 minutes to go Laxton pushed on to get a goal which came from Gavin Billings throw where Scott Hennell scored another goal to add to his tally. Laxton had many chances to grab all three points with Joe Gibson hitting the bar and Rob Densley overhead kick cleared off the line.

Women’s Health Checks
Health Checks all Women Should Know About A routine blood test last year picked up the fact that I had very high cholesterol. I am 48, healthy, have a low body mass index, eat very little meat, no dairy, and I exercise several times per week, so it had never occurred to me to have my cholesterol levels checked. It turns out I have hypercholesterolaemia – my body makes too much cholesterol, and now I have to take medication to control it so I reduce my risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease in later life. This got me thinking, and reading. What sort of medical checks should we be considering in our 40s and beyond? Midlife MOT The NHS Health Check Programme is a free screening open to anyone aged 40 to 74. It targets the top seven causes of preventable death: high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, cholesterol, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption – all the things that are more likely to cause us to become ill as we age and / or die prematurely. You’ll be asked about your lifestyle and family medical history, and have some blood tests. It was this blood test which showed up my own high cholesterol levels. Cervical smear Cervical cancer is most common in women between the ages of 30-35 but a fifth of cervical cancer cases occurred in women over the age of 65 so it is vital to have regular smear tests. You should have one every three years between 25-49, and every five years after that. A smear involves taking a small sample from the neck of the womb, called the cervix, to check for any abnormal cells that might lead to cervical cancer. Almost all cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus, which is initially contracted by sexual activity. It may lay dormant for years before it starts to cause cancerous cells on your cervix. If you have bleeding between periods or after sex you should see your GP.

Mammogram Breast awareness is very important at any age, because breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and affects one in eight women. A mammogram is an x-ray of both breasts to look for any changes that might suggest cancer. Depending on where you live you will be called for your first mammogram between the ages of 47 and 53. Regular self-checking is incredibly important too. Familiarise yourself with your family history if you can. If you notice any changes to your own breast tissue, such as irregular lumps, bumps, or skin dimpling, book an appointment to discuss it with your GP. Eye examination Most healthy people should have an eye examination bi-annually. But if one of your parents has or had glaucoma, or macular degeneration, or you have certain underlying medical conditions such as thyroid dysfunction or diabetes, or you are aged 70+ attending annually is more sensible. An eye examination can pick up early signs of eye disease, as well as discover whether you need spectacles. Glaucoma and wet macular degeneration in particular have a much better prognosis if picked up in the earliest stages. Bowel checks Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK yet accounts for the second highest number of deaths, so it’s essential to have regular tests.

Spotlight Magazine A test involves submitting a specimen of your stool for analysis through a postal self test kit. The test can detect tiny amounts of blood in the stool which may indicate cancer or precancerous polyps. Polyps can be removed before they go on to cause any harm.
Low radiation X-rays are used to take pictures of your spine and hips while you are lying down. You can also request a ‘bone turnover’ test. This is a urine test which detects whether you’re losing bone mass. If you are you may need calcium or vitamin D supplements.
Everyone aged 60 to 74 is sent a free home test kit every two years from the NHS, but you can take the test if you are younger than this and it’s a good idea if you have a family history of bowel cancer. You can buy a testing kit from good pharmacies.
Remember, prevention is better than cure. Most test results will simply give you peace of mind but if a problem is picked up, treatment is more effective the earlier an issue is identified. Take charge of your health in 2017.
Bone density check The menopause can seriously affect bone health. Once we’re over 50 we are at risk of osteoporosis because a drop in oestrogen for a prolonged period can cause a loss in bone mass. If you have a family history of osteoporosis, are a heavy drinker or smoker, have rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s Disease then it is important to have your bone density assessed.

New Year Recipe
Oven-Roasted cauliflower cheese Roasting the cauliflower imparts a lovely sweetness to the dish and the mustard means you need less cheese so it’s better for that post-Christmas waistline! Ingredients 1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the sauce 20g/¾oz unsalted butter 20g/¾oz plain flour Grated nutmeg to taste 250ml/9fl oz skimmed milk 40g/1½oz mature cheddar, finely grated 2 tsp Dijon or wholegrain mustard 15g/½oz parmesan, or similar hard cheese, finely grated
the sauce and mix so that all the florets are coated. Pour the cheese and cauliflower mixture back into the roasting dish, sprinkle over the parmesan and return to the oven for 1015 minutes, or until the cheese is goldenbrown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve as a supper dish with a green salad.
Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6. Place the cauliflower florets into an ovenproof dish and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and starting to brown. Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan, then adding the flour and cooking for 1-2 minutes, or until a light golden colour. Gradually add the milk until smooth, and then cook over a gentle heat for 3-4 minutes stirring constantly until thickened. Add the grated nutmeg. Reduce the heat then add the mustard and cheddar cheese. Put the roasted cauliflower into

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year 2017 Year of the Rooster Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 28 January. In China many people will take a whole week off from work to mark the celebration. It is known as the Spring Festival. On New Year’s Eve, Reunion Dinner is eaten. Many Chinese believe this is the most important meal of the year. It is usually shared by several generations and consists of fish, dumplings, spring rolls, glutinous rice cakes and sweet rice balls. To mark New Year, red lanterns are hung in the street, red couplets are pasted on doors and images of prosperity displayed. Fireworks are lit and it’s believed that the person who launches the first firework of the New Year will have good luck. Lion and Dragon Dances take place and these are intended to scare away evil, and attract health, wealth and wisdom. Many New Year activities have links with Chinese legends. New Year is called Guo Nian which means ‘celebrate a New Year’ or ‘overcome Nian’. Nian was an ancient sea living monster who came onto land on New Year’s Eve to eat people and livestock.
to play with. The child wrapped the coins in red paper and then played at unwrapping them and wrapping them back up until he got so tired he fell asleep. The parents put the coins under the child’s pillow and legend has it that when Sui came and tried to touch the child, the eight coins omitted such a strong light that it scared the demon away. This is the basis for why elders and those who are married give children and young unmarried people red envelopes with coins in them at New Year. The red envelope is called Yasui Qian which means suppressing Sui money and the purpose is to scare away the monster and bring good luck. According to Chinese astrology, each year is associated with an animal symbol. There is a 12 year cycle and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. The China Highlights website says that those born in the Year of the Rooster are observant, hardworking, confident and courageous. They are best matched with those born in the Year of the Ox or Snake. By Susan Brookes-Morris
One year, an old man with white hair and a ruddy complexion managed to scare away the monster by pasting red papers on to doors, burning bamboo which made a loud cracking sound, lighting candles in the houses and wearing red clothes. Another monster called Sui was said to terrify children whilst they slept. Parents would stay up all night watching and lighting candles to try and keep their children safe. One official’s family gave their child eight gold coins

Local Food Review
A cold foggy Tuesday December afternoon we visited The Lord Nelson at Sutton On Trent. Martin and Sally took over The Lord Nelson in December 2015. They have lived in the village for 12 years and with a career history of running and developing pubs and bars all over the country for over 20 years, when The Lord Nelson became available in our village it was, quite honestly an opportunity that couldn’t be missed. Being greeted by the friendly Landlord Martin and shown the menu. Decisions, decisions….. shall I chose the infamous ‘chippy Tuesday’ with buy one get one free or something else? I opted for the sausage and mash to warm me up.
Room for desert we had the double baked chocolate cheesecake served with chocolate orange ice cream. Amazing ! The whole experience was good from start to finish. From being welcomed in the pub, choice of food and drinks and definitely value for money, the Lord Nelson at Sutton On Trent is a must. They clearly combine their extensive experience within the independent pub sector and with large national pub brands to bring to Sutton-on-Trent the best experience for all their customers making this a must visit for a wonderful dining experience. Their core values say it all….
Our Values
Locally sourced tasty succulent ‘Hadleys’ sausages with a creamy mash with a rich onion gravy. They were beautiful ! Awaiting the food, which came in a timely manner, trying to choose the drinks was somewhat more difficult as there were a variety of hand pull beers, vast selection of wines and lagers.
Bringing Happiness to all our customers Excellence in Customer Service Co-operation with the whole community and helping to make it work for everyone Optimism and Energy to deliver a great product that everyone loves Innovation and the confidence to bring something new Loyalty to the village and our community

Garden View
In the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days. Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips. Food - When I was a child my dad told me to only feed birds in the winter, but now the experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good starter mix includes sunflower seeds, canary seed, hemp and husk-free oats.
Plants - Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it a mixed hedge of hawthorn, holly, dog rose, and rowan offers cover and food, and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha’Soleil d’Or’, Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Cornubia’ and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherry (Prunus padus) or a crab apple such as Malus ‘John Downie’. Nesting - Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them.
Use a good tube-style feeder and clean it regularly as a build up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can by rodent-proof feeders. I also have one tube-feeder which is set within a sort of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and groundhugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis darwinii is a good one, but you can also confound cats with a collar, which fits around the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up. Water - A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best to accommodate different bird species, and add a flat stone or two to aid with getting in and out! Keep it topped up and check daily to see that it hasn’t frozen. If it has, melt the ice with warm water. Your feathered friends will thank you.

Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot Hopefully this has given you some ideas. And don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Bird watch on January 28th and 29th Rachael Leverton
