A Vintage Trip The London To Brighton Run The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run takes place on November 5th. We take a look at the world’s longest running motoring event. In these days of motorway mayhem and congestion charges it’s difficult to imagine a time when owning a car was considered daring, a little eccentric and beyond the wildest dreams of most British people. When Jean-Joseph Etienne Lenoir patented the internal combustion engine in 1860 he paved the way for the development of the modern motor car. Initially progress was slow...literally. The Government passed The Red Flag Act in 1865. Section 3 of this act required that one person had to walk 60 yards ahead of the vehicle and that he should wave a small red flag to warn others that a car was approaching. This meant that the speed of the new motor cars was reduced to 4mph in the countryside and just 2mph in town. Unsurprisingly this legislation stifled the progress of the motor industry for many years.

In 1896 after much discussion The Locomotives on Highways Act was passed which did away with the need for the flag waver. In order to celebrate, the first London to Brighton Run was organised by Harry Lawson’s Motor Car Club. But Mr. Lawson had a hidden agenda. He wanted to control the fledgling motor car industry through master patents held by his British Motor Syndicate.

and the roads became sodden and muddy. The rally has run every year since with the exception of the war years when petrol was rationed. It is one of Britain’s biggest motoring spectacles and attracts entrants from all over the world. Only cars built before January 1st 1905

are eligible to enter and this year 490 of them have been registered for the run, 85 of them from countries as far away as China, the USA and Australia. The 60 mile rally starts at sunrise on the 5th so why not have a day out and see British motoring history in action. Visit www.veterancarrun.com for more information

The enterprising businessman managed to extract considerable sums of money from hopeful investors in his new companies. One of these was Daimler which today is Britain’s oldest car maker. It is estimated that at the time of the first Rally there were only around a hundred cars in Britain. Today we have around 500 million! 33 cars took part in the original run but only fourteen made it to Brighton and it’s rumoured that one of those was taken by train and had mud splashed all over it before crossing the finish line! Part of the problem was the weather which was dreadful. Rain poured down

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

Taurus & Ogee 5in Skirting Boards reversible (3.6M length) only £5! Taurus & Ogee 7in Skirting Boards reversible (3.6M length) only £6!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Good Read Plays About Britain – Craig Taylor How often do you hear someone complain that they never have time to read? Too often? Or are you guilty of this yourself? If so, Craig Taylor’s superb book is a godsend. The title is more or less an accurate description of the contents – although there are slightly fewer than a million of Taylor’s carefully crafted snapshots of British life: ‘dramatic haikus’, perhaps, as Richard Eyre suggests in his introduction. The format of each play is the same: a brief sentence to set the scene, then the dialogue takes over. The longest runs to three or four pages, the shortest to one sentence. A range of scenes is covered – from two women in a queue at a Surrey bank, to a farmer in Kent speaking on his mobile phone from a tractor, to a late night on Newcastle Quayside.

The characters are diverse too – young and old, drunk and sober, flippant and serious. However, it is the perfectly observed sharpness of speech that makes this book stand out. At first, you could believe that Taylor has merely been in the right place at the right time and recorded everything that he heard. Lines like ‘I once took Diana Rigg’s coat – in her pocket was a packet of Polos. That’s an elegant mint’ ! And ‘There’s more to it all. More than Swansea,’ sound so authentic that you believe in the speakers and their lives, however brief and insignificant their conversations seem to be. Some of the plays rely on a growing sense of unease - the nervous customer in the barber’s shop: others are out and out funny - two Wonder Women fighting in the street. Every ending is well judged and either rounds off the play with a ‘reveal’ or a cliff-hanger – always showing, never telling. Ideal for reading in short bursts or longer chunks – well worth a look.

The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh AA Milne

Yet the stories are still compellingly charming from the opening lines, ‘Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin.’ Milne may have been a traumatised war veteran but his storytelling has so much warmth and depth. At times the tales are laugh out loud funny – Rabbit in particular makes me giggle every time he replies to a knock at the door – and children will quickly read along with you, even if some of the sentence structure and vocabulary is complex. Every child deserves to have this book read aloud to them at least once before they are six and I bet you anything you will be asked for it again, and again. The word classic is sometimes used lightly: here, it is truly deserved.

The recently released film ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’ painted a less-than-rosy picture of the dysfunctional upper class Milne family.

TV Guide What’s the best way to watch TV? Most of us enjoy curling up in-front of the TV on a cold winter’s night. And, as long as you have decent broadband, these days there’s plenty of ways to watch your favourite shows. If you’re feeling a bit flummoxed by all the options available, our quick guide might help to make your mind up.

Satellite TV – from around £7.50 a month There are a range of providers to choose from, including Sky, Virgin Media, BT and Talk Talk, all of which give you access to a wide range of digital channels. You will need a set-top box, and in some cases a satellite dish, which is normally included in the cost of your subscription, and you’ll need to take out a 12-18 month contract.

Freeview – Free As the name implies, Freeview gives you access to more than 60 TV channels, for free.

Most providers have different packages to choose from, and you can add on bundles, such as sports channels.

You can also watch hundreds of programmes that have aired in the previous seven days.

Some providers offer wider phone and broadband packages. BT, for example, offers 80 channels, unlimited broadband and free weekend calls from around £10 per month.

With most TVs, you shouldn’t need any extra equipment, but TVs bought before 2010 might require a set-top box, which costs from £30. You will need a TV aerial, and not all PAGEare 14 available The AD in all locations, channels so it’s worth checking what you can get before you buy anything.

You don’t need any extra equipment; there are no adverts and you can pause, rewind, fast forward and watch again as much as you like. There’s also no contract, so you can cancel whenever you want. Amazon Prime – £79 per year Like Netflix, Amazon Prime is a subscription service that allows you to watch films and TV shows through a multitude of digital devices. With some older TVs, you’ll need to

buy a fire stick (which costs around £30). There doesn’t seem to be quite as much choice with Amazon Prime as there is with Netflix. But if you take into consideration the other benefits of Prime, such as free music, next-day Amazon delivery and cloud-storage for photos, it is a great price. If you don’t want the extras, you can opt for Prime video, for just £5.99 per month.

Netflix – £5.99-£8.99 per month Netflix is a subscription service that allows you to watch thousands of films and TV shows through your smart TV, laptop, phone, tablet and other devices.

Looking to attract moreto attract customers? Looking more customers? You can choose what you want to watch from a huge menu, including programmes made by Netflix, such as the awardwinning Orange is the New Black.

It’s National Tree Week! 25th November-3rd Dec is National Tree Week

frothy show of white flowers, then in June these are replaced by attractive deep purple, and supposedly edible though I’ve never tried them - fruits.

November 25th marks the start of National Tree Week, which in turn marks the start of tree-planting season.

Then, when Autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops and bursts into fiery colour. If you only have room for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down.

Considering that most of us in the UK have fairly small plots we do love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them.

How to Plant a Tree Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Make up a mixture of half compost and half soil from the hole. Put a few inches of this mix at the bottom of the hole.

planted or you risk damaging the roots.

Trees need support so drive a support stake into the hole at one edge. This needs to be done before the tree is

Use proper straps to secure the tree to the post. Then Water well!

Tip the tree from its container and loosen the roots a little. Place it into the hole and fill in with the soil and compost mixture. Firm it down with your heel.

Another hard worker is Sorbus hupehensis var. obtusa. This tree has a pretty shape and is attractive throughout the year.

How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed an enormous weeping willow or an enormous pine tree completely obscuring a front garden.

In the late spring it is covered in white blossom which is followed by masses of dark pink berries. The blue-green leaves turn red in the autumn.

It can be tricky deciding what sort of tree to plant on a small, suburban plot but there are plenty of candidates. Generally trees up to 8-10m are considered suitable. The best urban trees offer year-round interest. Varieties of Acer Palmatum are rather lovely. They are elegant trees which have attractive green or purple foliage and colour beautifully in the winter.

It’s just my opinion of course but without at least one tree, a garden can seem flat and a little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life.

For my money Amalanchier Lamarckii is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it produces a

Driver Survivor Most people spend many hours in their car each week, but none of us expects to have to live in it! But in the face of a major incident or in the event of a breakdown or bad weather, you could be forced to rely on your car for short term shelter and survival. With a properly equipped car emergency kit, you could survive in your vehicle for days if necessary. If you get into trouble and you are in your car, studies have shown that you are most likely to survive if you stay with your vehicle rather than venture out looking for help.

But if you do decide to leave your vehicle only do so if it’s safe to do so, the weather clears and you have proper protective clothing.

St Andrew’s day is the 30th November. An annual bank holiday has taken place in his honour since 2007, in Scotland.

St Andrew was crucified by the Romans on an ‘X’ shaped cross. This is reflected in the white of the Scottish national flag which is known as the Saltire.

In addition, make sure the vehicle is parked well off the road and leave a note indicating what has happened, where you have gone, and your health situation.

The day is marked with musical celebrations, dancing and special food. There is also free entry to many castles and attractions on that day.

Some of St Andrew’s relics can be found at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh, others are in Amalfi, Italy.

St Andrew’s Day

St Andrew is a busy chap; he also the patron saint of Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Bulgaria and several other countries as well as gout, sore throats and spinsters! Before leaving to follow Jesus, Andrew was a fisherman. Amongst his notable acts are: bringing the first foreigners to meet Jesus, and getting a crowd of people to share food with those beside them.

Whilst now famous as the birthplace of modern golf and for having a notable university. St Andrews the town is believed to be so called because it once housed some of St Andrew’s relics. By Susan Brookes-Morris

He became one of the twelve disciples. Andrew’s brother was Peter, the founder of the church. This relationship helped the Scots appeal for protection from the Pope against the English in 1320.

It’s Just Around The Corner …Christmas that is. Now we all know someone who buys their prezzies in the January sales, has their cards written and addressed by Easter and their turkey ordered before the first frost.

Order meat early Farmers’ markets and shops are teeming at this Christmas time. Don’t imagine you’ll get what you want if you leave it until the last minute. Who’s coming to dinner? Are there any vegetarians, vegans or dairy intolerances among your guests. Are

Divide the remaining list into manageable chunks and purchase a few things each week. For foodstuffs, begin with items which can be frozen and end with the fresh items which need to be purchased just a day or two before.

We hate their smugness and lack of proper festive spirit but mainly we hate them because we know that we could never ever be that organised...until now!

Clear out toy cupboards Be ruthless. Involve the kids. Donate outgrown and unplayed-with items to charity. If you are an eBayer, spend an afternoon listing items for sale.

Write the cards It’s bit of a chore but put the carols on, pour a glass of something festive and get into the spirit. You’ll feel really virtuous when they’re done. Tree lights and outdoor lights Test them well in advance so they can be replaced if necessary.

We’re not suggesting that you start planning Christmas while on your summer holidays but it does pay to be a little bit organised. You’ll arrive at December 25th with far fewer grey hairs and much lower blood pressure if you plan ahead. Clear out food cupboards Be ruthless. Chuck out all the out-of-date items and things you know will never be eaten. Make room for all those festive goodies.

By now you should be feeling organised and in control. You may even feel the beginnings of a smug smile twitch at the corners of your mouth. Enjoy it…you earned it. Just be aware that someone somewhere hates you for it!

Major George Howson was an engineer. He was a man of great energy and determination. He won the military cross in WWl.

call me now on

0115 906 8680

He was addicted to strong Turkish cigarettes and bought them 10000 at a time. He was also the founder of The Royal British Legion Poppy factory! Through the work of Anna Guerin of France and Moina Michael of the USA, both very practical women who took Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s famous poem, “In Flanders Fields”, and devised a way of raising vital funds for wartime charities. The British Legion had been set up the year before and the very first French Poppy Appeal – using silk poppies made by widows - had raised £106,000. In 1921 the first British Poppy appeal was held. In the first year the poppies were imported from France and there was huge demand as poppies quickly became the icons of remembrance. The Major made a connection; Remembrance Day needed poppies and wounded ex-soldiers needed work. In a letter to his parents he spoke of using a £2000 cheque he had been given to set up a factory to, ‘…give the disabled their chance.’ He wrote that he felt the project would probably not be successful but that he ought to attempt it anyway.

He set up The Disabled Society in London with just five injured exservicemen, and in spite of his initial lack of optimism, in few years that had grown to 350 men. He set up a sister factory in Edinburgh to supply poppies to Scotland, and the London factory moved to larger premises near the Thames in Richmond and was renamed The Poppy Factory. As time went on the needs of veterans changed. They wanted to work in their own communities, closer to their families. They also wanted to use the many and varied skills they had acquired during their careers in the armed services, prior to becoming injured. In 2010, The Poppy Factory began to actively help disabled ex-Service find the work they wanted in the places they wanted to be. It continues to build on its strong historical foundations to provide an employability service that supports hundreds of ex-Service

personnel with varying health challenges into meaningful employment with businesses across the country every year. Moina Michael was an American professor. She wrote a response to McCrae’s poem in 1918 entitled We Shall Keep The Faith. She vowed to always wear a poppy as a symbol of Remembrance for those who served in the war. She realised the need to provide financial and occupational support for ex-Servicemen after teaching a class of disabled veterans at the University of Georgia, and so she pursued the idea of selling silk poppies to raise funds for them. Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The national Poppy Appeal fund-raising target is £37 million to allow the RBL to carry out its vital work. The nation’s biggest armed forces charity spends £1.6 million every week in direct welfare support and answers more than 170,000 calls for help.

This month - Hedges Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities.

Garden View provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges.

Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen for fruit and flowers - food.

Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care.

Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can

On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style

of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife. I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slowgrowing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the

soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come. By Rachael Leverton

Community Based Defibrillators Sudden Cardiac Arrest happens around 140,000 times a year in the UK, making it one of the UK’s largest killers – equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day! The potential for saving a life is dependent upon time, the faster medical help can be attained, the better the chance of survival. To try and give people in Blidworth & Ravenshead a greater chance of survival the Abbey Medical Group Patient Participation Group is raising money to fund community based defibrillator units. Currently we have funds amounting to £2,000 but we need much more to have several units based in our communities. Volunteer staff will be trained to provide the service. And it is hoped that other organisations in our communities will join us in this project. What is a Community Based Defibrillator or AED? A defibrillator is a computerised medical device delivers an electrical current through the chest which aims to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm allowing it to pump again. Rapid response using automated technology can significantly improve the quality of life of a survivor, as the longer the brain is starved of oxygen, the more damage that can occur.

messages will guide the user step-by-step through the process and its intelligent technology will only allow it to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. AED technology opens a window for the public to take on a key role to support emergency services who would otherwise be hindered by the time it takes to reach the victim. It is argued that AEDs should be as broadly deployed as fire extinguishers and first aid kits. Is there a need? . Clinical studies suggest you have less than 5 minutes from the event to save the life, this decreasing by up to 23% per minute. In rural areas it takes time to get medical help, so Community Public Access Defibrillators (cPAD) have a very important part to play in helping save lives in rural communities. cPAD schemes are reckoned to be about 10x more effective in saving life post hospital than other community schemes alone. Your community needs to decide if you want one, but as SCA can happen to anyone at any time, and is not age related, better safe than sorry!

War Poets As we head towards Armistice Day, it’s a pertinent time to reflect on the work of the ‘War Poets.’ The phrase is generally taken to refer to the 16 men who wrote about their first-hand experiences of the First World War and who are commemorated in a slate memorial at Poets Corner. The 16 are; Richard Aldington, Laurence Binyon, Edmund Blunden, Rupert Brooke, Wilfrid Gibson, Robert Graves, Julian Grenfell, Ivor Gurney, David Jones, Robert Nichols, Wilfred Owen, Herbert Read, Isaac Rosenberg, Siegfried Sassoon, Charles Sorley and Edward Thomas. Now often studied as part of the English curriculum, the work of these poets is particularly notable for being violent and realistic and challenging earlier poetry which had a pro-war message. Their work expresses extreme emotions of fear, anger and love. The War Poets Association says; ‘the young soldier poets of the First World War established war poetry as a literary genre. Their combined voice has become one of the defining texts of Twentieth Century Europe.’ Some such as, Isaac Rosenberg, Edward Thomas, Charles Sorley and Wilfred Owen died in action, whilst Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves survived but went on to express their emotional distress through poetry. Wilfred Owen is generally accepted as the greatest war poet to have written in the English Language. After being blown up, suffering concussion and

Owen was awarded a George Cross in October 1918 having seized a machine gun and shot and captured several Germans, but just a few weeks later, he was killed at Orps.

First Wednesday of the month at Blidworth Library, New Lane, Blidworth, Notts NG21 0PW

His most famous poem is ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ meaning ‘it is sweet and right’ with the last line going on to mean ‘to die for your country.’ In his poem The Sentry he talks about how one of his sentries was blinded. He said ‘All a poet can do is warn. That is why the true poet must be truthful.’ Anthologies celebrating the best of the genre often include: Charles Sorley’s ‘When you see millions of the mouthless dead’, Isaac Rosenberg’s ‘Break of Day in the Trenches’, ‘Lights Out’ by Edward Thomas, ‘To his love’ by Ivor Gurney and ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke. Whilst not written by one of the commemorated 16, the most quoted poem of this era remains ‘In Flanders Fields’ which was written by former doctor John McCrae during the second battle of Ypres. Many widely renowned British poets also have war poems covering a wide range of conflicts within their collections, including Kipling, Tennyson, Hughes, Larkin and Hardy.

Tequila! Tequila was North America’s first distilled drink and the first to be produced commercially. Like Mexico itself it is surrounded by myth… Tequila is made from cactus juice: No, it’s made only from the blue Agave plant which is related to the Amaryllis and the Lily. It is a succulent but definitely not a cactus. Traditional Tequila has a worm in the bottom of the bottle: The worm in the bottle was never a traditional element and was only introduced into a similar drink, Mescal in the 1940s as a marketing ploy. Some American brands of Tequila followed suit and the myth was born.

Blanco or silver tequilas are virtually unaged so are zesty and spicy. Reposado tequilas are aged for 2-12 months in oak barrels. This gives them more of a warm woody flavour. Añejos tequilas are aged for longer - 1 to 4 years, and are very woody. Many people consider the reposado tequilas to give the best balance between the agave profile and the wood but it’s really down to personal taste. By Sarah Davey

They vary a lot depending on the production process, the growing environment of the Agave plants including the temperature, the soil, the age of the plants and the means by which they’re baked.

A slightly different take on a traditional tart tatin

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Ingredients 125g caster sugar 40g cold butter, chopped 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve

Roll out the pastry to about 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. Bake the pie in the oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the tart onto the plate.

Method Preheat oven to 200C/gas 6. Put a 21cmdiameter frying pan with an ovenproof handle (this bit is important!) on a hob over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel coloury. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture. Turn the heat down and cook for 5–10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan.

NEW CARS: WE CAN SAVE YOU MONEY!

If you have a new vehicle and want to save money remember that we can carry out servicing (and stamp your service book) with no detriment to your manufacturer’s warranty terms. The job will be done just as well as at a main dealer but for much less cost.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE OFFER? Cold weather presents some of the most challenging driving conditions. Read on for our winter car maintenance checklist When winter arrives it’s important to know that your car is capable of dealing with the inclement weather, so we’ve produced a vital winter car checklist to ensure you don’t get caught out. It’s important to keep your car well maintained throughout the year, but this becomes even more vital during the winter months. The good news is that winter car checks really aren’t too different from normal maintenance procedures, however there are a few items that you should pay extra attention to: Check your car battery Cold and damp weather is a battery killer. There’s little worse than the mechanical groan when you turn the key caused by a dying car battery. If your battery is struggling to start your car, the chances are it’s on its way out.

Check screen wash Wintery weather is frequently wet, meaning you’ll spend lots of time using your windscreen wipers. There’s a high risk of them smearing grime across the windscreen if your screen wash bottle is empty. To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, open the windscreen washer bottle under the bonnet, and fill it with screen wash. You can buy ready mixed or concentrated screen wash, which you’ll need to mix with water. Check exterior lights It sounds simple, and it is. The days are shorter and the weather is worse during the winter months, making maintenance of your exterior lights an important aspect of any winter car checklist.

Winter tyres If you drive frequently in winter, then consider buying a set of winter tyres. They offer exceptional grip when the temperature drops below seven degrees, and in snow and ice. They’re not cheap, but well worth the investment

Car battery prices vary, and can cost from around £60 fitted, although models fitted with stop-start systems can cost more than £100, depending on the size, type and the electrical current produced. There are dozens of combinations, so make sure you get the correct one.

Winter car equipment Carrying an emergency kit with you at all times through the winter might seem a bit extreme – but if you ever find yourself stranded you’ll be glad of it. We recommend:

Check antifreeze Antifreeze, as its name suggests, stops the water in the engine’s cooling system from freezing. To test the effectiveness of your antifreeze, you’ll need an antifreeze tester, which cost about £5. To use it, Lower the tube into the coolant and squeeze the rubber bulb on the end to suck some antifreeze inside the tester

performance cars & classic and American vehicles EXHAUSTS, BATTERIES & DIAGNOSTIC CODE READING, CLUTCHES, BRAKES, STEERING & SUSPENSION AIR BAG LIGHTS, SERVICE INDICATOR RE-SETTING (from £11.75) TIMING BELTS TO MOST VEHICLES UNDER BODY PROTECTION & WELDING WORK UNDERTAKEN

ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED MOTs carried out plus minor scuffs and scratches sorted. We also carry out servicing/fault diagnosis on most vehicles including 4X4 and performance models. Rest assured you will receive a friendly welcome – whatever type of car you own . . . and, most importantly, we save you money on main dealer rates!

Check and clean your lights regularly. The salt and dirt can quickly build-up, reducing visibility at night as well as during periods of snow, fog and rain. Carry extra bulbs in case of a failure.

You can test the battery yourself if you have the correct equipment, but it’s far easier to ask a specialist. Assuming you can start the car, you can drive to your local main dealer or car spares shop to buy a new one. Most car battery stockists will even fit it for you.

Winter driving - battery check If you can’t start your car, you can use a set of jump leads, or remove the battery and charge it indoors. This can be complex, not least because car batteries are heavy. You should always refer to the owner’s manual.

Everyone Should Know Basic First Aid

It can take just a few minutes to save someone’s life

There are many myths and misconceptions about injuries.

Your daughter has a nosebleed. Your father chokes on a piece of meat. Your toddler swallows some floor cleaner. Would you know what to do?

Here are the most common:

First aid is the care given before the emergency services arrive. A blocked airway can kill someone in three to four minutes yet it can take eight to 12 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

If you can move a limb it’s not broken NO, the only sure way to tell if a limb is broken is to x-ray it.

Knowing how to open someone’s airway could mean the difference between life and death. Almost 4000 people per year die because of accidents in their homes and statistically you are far more likely to be called upon to administer first aid to someone you know than to a stranger. The top ten injuries or accidents in the home are: Falls Strikes and collisions Cuts and abrasions Foreign bodies Over exertion e.g. moving heavy furniture Burns and scalds Crush injuries Bites and stings Puncture wounds e.g. stepping on a child’s toy Suspected poisoning

Butter or cream is good for a burn NO, immerse the injured limb in cool water.

Put a bleeding wound under a tap NO, by all means clean the wound if required but water will wash away the body’s own clotting agents so compression with a clean dressing is the best way to staunch the flow. Make someone sick if they’ve swallowed poison NO, this can block their airway or, if the substance is corrosive, damage it further.

THIS IS

A PRIME SPOT FOR YOUR AD

DON’T YOU THINK?

Most first aid is common sense but learning some simple skills such as chest compressions (CPR) and the Heimlich manoeuvre will increase your confidence if an emergency arises. There are many organisations which provide short courses, most last just half a day. Your employer might provide training but if not you could enrol the whole family on a course and make an event of it. Even young children will feel empowered to learn new skills and you never know when they might come in useful!

Many thanks for your efficiency and professionalism regards dealing with our requests as a company through your paper. Couldn't have gone better!! Jim, Felley Furnishings

Stir Up Sunday Stir Up Sunday is on Sunday 26th November. The tradition dates back to Victorian times, when the family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding the Sunday before advent began. The opening words of the Book Of Common Prayer, read on this Sunday before Advent, are ‘Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord’, which is probably where the name came from. Originally Christmas pudding contained 13 ingredients said to represent Jesus and his disciples. It is stirred by each member of the family from East to West, to remember the Wise Men that visited Jesus in the Nativity Story. This is the point where you make a wish though no-one knows when that was added to the tradition.

The traditional sprig holly on top of the pud was said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross. Holly and its berries are extremely toxic so it might be better to stick to artificial greenery. As to why we set fire to the pudding, no-one seems to know. One theory is that the flames represent the power of Christ. Another is that Christian traditions mingled with the midwinter festivals of light, and the pudding, with its high alcohol content was simply a good candidate for being ignited!

Charms were often added to the pud and said to bring luck if you found them in your portion on Christmas Day. Historically the lucky charms were a silver coin for wealth, a wishbone for luck, a thimble for thrift, a ring for marriage, and an anchor for safe harbour. Later coins were often used instead. As needing expensive emergency dental treatment is definitely NOT considered lucky it might be wise to forgo that particular tradition nowadays or at least give your serving a thorough inspection before you tuck in.
