Mansfield’s Much Needed Pod
ansfield ‘Pod’ (activity centre) is the latest addition to Southwell Care Project’s (SCP) centres for adults with learning disabilities. The charity started out in Southwell before evolving to include a ‘Pod’ in Newark and the latest which has opened this September at the St John’s Centre in the middle of Mansfield. SCP offers courses in vital life-skills such as money management and cookery as well as broader interest activities such as crafts, singing, dancing and drama. For many clients this is central to leading a fulfilling life and, perhaps as essential as the activities, it enhances self-esteem by engaging them with members of the wider community. Whilst SCP has some employed staff, they very much depend on volunteers. These come from diverse backgrounds and include retired teachers, youngsters completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award and even mums with young children.
Taster sessions across the summer have proved that there is a need for the service in Mansfield so anyone willing to lend a hand will be roundly welcomed. Funding for SCP’s work has become more challenged with recent government cuts. Consequently, SCP has a further initiative to generate income. This is a cut flower business and associated services running out of a new centre adjacent to Brackenhurst Agricultural College near Southwell. As well as being run as a Social Enterprise, Flower Pod will offer a range of learning and recreational activities in a scenic location. Mansfield Pod can be found at the St John’s Centre, St John St, Mansfield, NG18 1QH. Contact information: Web- www.southwellcare. org Email - tracy@ southwellcare.org or info@ southwellcare.org or alternatively ringing Anna Joyce or Steve Shatwell – 01636 819066.

Half-Price Parking in Mansfield Centre
isitors to Mansfield are being offered half-price parking in the town centre on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the next two months.
The offer applies to Walkden Street Multistorey Car Park, which is ideally located in the heart of the town centre between Mansfield Bus Station and the Four Seasons Shopping Centre. It means parking will cost only 50p an hour at the car park on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during September and October. The car park, which has 455 spaces, is open from 8am to 6.30pm. Visitors can enjoy all that the town centre has to offer at their leisure without having to rush back as they pay before they exit the car park.
Mansfield District Council is introducing the offer in conjunction with Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID) to encourage more people to visit the town centre. Cllr Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration, said: “Mansfield town centre has lots to offer including an exciting range of big name high street stores, smaller independent shops and a thriving market as well as the Palace Theatre, Mansfield Museum and lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. “I hope this offer will bring extra visitors into the area, encourage residents to shop local and will mean those that already visit Mansfield can afford to stay for longer. This will all help to give our market and businesses a boost.”

Stoptober!
toptober is a Department of Health nationwide initiative which has been launched to encourage people to stop smoking during October. Helping people to stop smoking is vital if we are to reduce the health inequalities & improve the lives of people living in our area. New Leaf, the NHS Stop Smoking Service for Nottinghamshire County is wholeheartedly embracing this challenge, with a month of activities, promotions and competitions that have been planned in this multi-agency project. Smokers will be encouraged to set a quit date in October & those who are still smoke free 4 weeks later will be entered into a draw to win fabulous prizes. For example, a Nintendo DS, a Center Parcs Spa day, shopping vouchers, beauty gift sets, leisure centre passes and a signed photo of Rebecca Addlington to name just a few! Carol Goodwin an Advisor for New Leaf commented, “As a service we are really excited about Stoptober. We work hard
throughout the year to support people who want to stop smoking and No Smoking Day in March is always very popular, so it’s great that there is now another date in the calendar for people to focus on & it’s a month not just one day.”
No
Advisors will be on hand in various community locations throughout October, for example, Mansfield town centre, Idlewells shopping centre in Sutton, supermarkets and The Street at King’s Mill, to provide information, advice & register those who would like to quit. Sat Nav Savvy
hat do Brian Blessed, Kim Cattrall and Victor Meldrew all have in common? They are all voices of sat navs!
Satellite navigation systems – or sat navs – are an invaluable aid to driving in unfamiliar areas. Gone are the days of struggling to see a tiny road in an enormous atlas as you realise you’re in the wrong lane, going the wrong way. Now you can simply type in the postcode of where you want to go and concentrate on driving, while your chosen voice gives you directions and a map of your route is shown on the screen. There is a huge range of sat nav solutions available, costing anything from a couple of pounds to several hundred. So how do you choose the right one for you? All sat navs work in the same way. The ‘magic’ comes from the network of global positioning satellites that orbit the Earth. They can lock onto the receiver in your sat nav and locate its position to within 10 metres. This position is then overlaid on to a map to reveal your location. The first decision is which of the three basic types you want to go for. Integrated sat navs are part of the car’s dashboard and are fitted by the manufacturer. They normally have the best quality screens and sound systems. They are also secure, as they can’t be removed from the car. Dedicated sat navs are fitted to the car using either a suction pad on the windscreen or a stand on the dashboard. A lead into the car’s cigarette lighter provides the power. Their big advantage is that you can use them in any car. However, they are very popular with
18
thieves, so you must always remove your sat nav from the car when you leave and wipe away any
marks left on the windscreen. The cheapest option is an app for a smart phone. Bear in mind, though, that the quality may not be as good as other options. You will also have to buy a holder so you can see your phone as you drive, and you may need an in-car charger. It’s then a case of investigating the additional services that sat navs can offer, and trying out a few. Many will calculate how long your journey is likely to take and let you know of any traffic problems up ahead. You can also use them to locate nearby facilities such as petrol stations and restaurants. Finally, check the cost of software and map updates, and maps of other countries that you may need to download from the manufacturer’s website. And remember, sat-navs are not infallible and should not be a replacement for common sense. If the road suggested looks too narrow, dangerous or apparently cuts through someone’s front garden, choose another route! By Alex Brown

Health & Wellbeing Better Posture
Do you look at your posture? Others Do!!
W
hen you see someone with good posture, standing or sitting up straight, chest out, shoulders back you are automatically attracted to that person as they seem happy and healthy, kind and caring, honest and even successful. The reverse is also true, that when you see someone who slouches or has poor posture they give off a vibe that suggests they are unhappy with their lot in life, their job, money, love. They tend to get all the illnesses going round too. Poor posture is a sign that your spine is out of line. The stresses that we suffer on a day to day basis, physical, chemical or emotional can make us change our posture and cause the spine and other joints to become misaligned. Our body is designed to heal and regulate itself. It manages this by sending messages from the brain through the nervous system to all organs and systems of the body and then back again, the brain can then decide what it needs to function correctly. The nerves travel through the spinal column before branching out. Misaligned joints can impinge on these nerves and cause interference to the messages. This can prevent the body from functioning at its’ fullest potential or healing properly. Chiropractors are trained to detect these misalignments (subluxations) and correct them. The messages can then flow freely through the nervous system and back to the brain and allow your body to function more fully.
24
Whether you are a sports athlete like Tiger Woods or Chris Hoy (who have regular chiropractic care), an occupational athlete (police officer or fire fighter) who rely heavily on their senses functioning at a high level, a parent or grandparent who wants to do the gardening or play with the kids or most important of all, babies or children who don’t want to grow up with the health issues their parents have, a Chiropractic check up could be the most important thing you choose to do. How do you look after your health, wait until something goes wrong or do things to maintain your health at a higher level? Lack of symptoms are not necessarily a sign of good health in the same way that vomiting is not necessarily a sign of sickness (it can be your body’s way of removing a bug from your system), exactly as it was designed to do. If health comes from a bottle of pills, does that mean that the person taking the most pills is the healthiest? Is your headache caused by a lack of paracetamol in your body? Many people say they are healthy because they eat well and exercise, which is great but if your spine is subluxated you are likely to be using the wrong muscles or using them in an unbalanced way. Chiropractic care is safe and gentle; it can enhance the health of people of all ages and could improve the effectiveness of the health care already provided to them.
