Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Tired Of Trick Or Treating?
Take away the worry this Halloween and try something different
trying to stick their nose in the correct position.
H
When it’s time for a dance, have yourself a Monster Mash! Play some lively tunes and when the music stops, everyone stands as still as a statue in their most terrifying pose. Finally, wind down with a game of Sleeping Zombies. You simply have to lie on the floor and stay completely still. Anyone who moves is out. It’s harder than it sounds and children love it!
alloween is on the horizon again and with it comes the trick-or-treating dilemma. For some, it is just a bit of harmless fun. However, many parents are concerned about the safety aspects of knocking on strangers’ doors, while others object to the idea of ‘begging’ for sweets. If you’re not keen, there are still plenty of ways to get into the spirit of Halloween and enjoy yourselves at home. Apple-bobbing is the traditional game for this time of year. Simply place a few fruits in a bowl of water and challenge children to grab one with their teeth – no hands allowed! Getting dressed-up is another great part of Halloween. Invite some friends round and organise a costume parade. You could give prizes for the best homemade outfit, most scary, or most unusual. To really gross out your guests, organise a touchy-feely challenge. Assemble foods that can double-up as creepy body parts – for example, cold cooked spaghetti, jelly or baked beans make great innards, sausages or gherkins can be witch’s fingers, and imagine that pickled onions are vampire’s eyeballs. Cover each bowl with a cloth and see if your guests are brave enough to put in a hand and guess what they can feel!
How to trick-or-treat safely If you do want to go trick-or-treating, you can have fun and stay safe if you follow some basic rules: • Younger children should always go out with an adult. Agree a curfew for older children and make sure you know who they are with and where they are going. Remind children never to go into the house of anyone they do not know. • If possible, agree in advance with your neighbours which houses you will visit. Do not go to homes that aren’t lit. • Dark costumes make children difficult for motorists to see. Take a torch and wear glow bands or fluorescent strips. By Alex Brown
Many party games can be adapted to suit a spooky celebration. Instead of a donkey, how about Pin the Nose on the Witch? Draw a witch on a large piece of paper, and ask children to cut out noses from coloured paper. They are then blindfolded and turned around three times before

Get Safe Online
ational Get Safe N Online Week is 21 – 25 October Last week I was out for coffee with a friend and our conversation turned to computers.
“I’m actually a bit scared of mine,” she admitted. “I’m wary of online banking and of buying things online, and I’m terrified to let my eleven-year-old use it because of all the media publicity about paedophiles.” She’s not alone. A good many of us are worried about online security, but there are real steps we can take to improve our safety. Use the latest OS (Operating System). The most recent OS is generally the safest. Microsoft’s Windows 8 is their most up-to-date OS and anything earlier should really be upgraded. Don’t forget that free software updates are issued all the time. Take advantage of these and update regularly.
regularly. Ditch the SPAM! As far as possible don’t open anything you think is SPAM. Use ‘disposable’ email addresses for registrations on sites with which you’re unfamiliar, and use SPAM filter software. Wi-Fi Wisdom! Wireless networks can offer an easy way for people to eavesdrop on your PC. Because they use radio waves, anyone within range can pick up the signal, making them a target for hackers who could be after your financial details, as well as freeloading unauthorised users who might piggyback your signal to access your broadband connection. Use an up-to-date router. Make sure you rename your network to make it more difficult to find, create a unique password and always turn on the encryption. Backup! Backup! Backup!
Just in case. Back all your data up regularly, and from time to time check the backups. Don’t Forget... Never give out User IDs, Pins or Passwords. No legitimate corporation will EVER ask for them. Never give out financial or personal information unless you initiated the contact, and you are sure about who you’re dealing with. For children and teens. Use an appropriate browser and buy or download software which monitors their online activity, limits the amount of time they can spend online, and blocks their ability to send out personal information. Most importantly SUPERVISE THEM! Visit www.getsafeonline. org.uk for more information about National Get Safe Online week. By Sarah Davey
Install security software. The main threats to your online security are hackers, viruses and spyware, (this last one is a programme that may be used to log your credit card details). Ideally you should have a firewall, plus antivirus and anti-spyware software as an absolute minimum. You really need all three, because individually they won’t protect you against every attack. Be sure to update them

T
Lancashire Hotpot
he Irish have their stew, the Welsh have Cawl and in Lancashire they have Hotpot. Lancashire Hotpot is probably the most famous dish to come from the county of Lancashire and as you can see in this recipe it is very simple and straightforward to make.
Ingredients
100g dripping or butter 900g stewing lamb, cut into large chunks 3 lamb kidneys, sliced, fat removed 2 medium onions, chopped 4 carrots, peeled and sliced 25g plain flour 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 500ml lamb or chicken stock 2 bay leaves 900g potatoes, peeled and sliced Method Preheat oven to 160C/gas 3 Heat a little dripping or butter in a large shallow casserole dish which can also be used on the hob. Fry the lamb in batches until brown and reserve to a plate for later. Then fry the kidney and remove those to the plate. Fry the onions and carrots in the pan with a little more dripping or butter, until they are golden. Sprinkle over the flour, allow to cook and absorb the juices for a couple of minutes. Add the Worcestershire sauce, then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Add in the meat and kidneys and the bay leaves, then turn off the heat.
It is a long, slow cooked recipe, yet unlike many stews, it is still quite light and suitable for eating all year round (save perhaps on a really hot summers day). Pop it in the oven, leave for a couple of hours and you have a great supper dish and, it tastes even better the next day when the flavors have had time to develop.
Serves 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour 40 minutes
14
Arrange the sliced potatoes on top of the meat, then drizzle with a little more dripping or butter. Cover, then place in the oven for about 1½ hrs until the potatoes are cooked. Remove the lid, brush the potatoes with a little more dripping, then turn the oven up to brown the potatoes, or finish under the grill for 5-8 mins until golden brown and slightly crisp at the edges.

Coal Mining Subsidence
Are you covered???? n the past, Mansfield and its surrounding areas have been heavily influenced by its connection to the coal mining industry, which over the last 30 years, has lead to millions of pounds worth of insurance claims for subsidence.
I
Coal Mining Subsidence is the downward movement of the site on which a building stands where the soil beneath the buildings foundations is unstable. The damage can take place over a prolonged time period and can be observed as the sinking or collapsing of surface land or cracked plaster or brickwork or the sticking of doors within a building. Every year an estimated £175million is spent on subsidence claims throughout the UK. In fact, there are more claims made for subsidence each year than for flooding! – hard to believe with the British weather!
The BGS (British Geological Survey) estimates 6.5 million properties are at risk of being affected by subsidence, so if you live in a coal mining area chances are your home or other property may be or have been damaged by subsidence. A subsidence claim can be extremely costly and drawn out and if your property has previously suffered a subsidence claim (even if it was before you were there) you may not be adequately covered on your current insurance policy! Here at Park Hall Financial Services Limited we have Cert CII qualified advisors who offer a specialised understanding to get you the right cover. Don’t let the cracks in your insurance pull you down! Call 01623 651773 to speak with a specialist at Park Hall Financial Services.

Prepare Your Car For Winter
uring the winter months, dark evenings and wet, windy weather can make driving very dangerous. Following these seven steps should help ensure your stay safe on the roads this season. Winter weather conditions can cause havoc on the roads for motorists. As a result the number of car insurance claims made tend to increase around this time of year. To help ensure both you and your car stay out of harm’s way this winter, here are seven safety steps you should carry out before you set off. 1. Get your car serviced The peace of mind a professional check could offer is well worth paying for. Therefore before the winter weather gets any worse, it’s a good idea to book your car into a garage and have it looked over by a mechanic. Fixing any mechanical problems now will hopefully reduce the risk you will break down at a later date.
before you drive. The current legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but during the winter months it is a sensible idea to ensure your tyres have at least 3mm of tread depth. This should also help increase your car’s fuel efficiency and lower your petrol costs as you won’t have to put your foot down as hard on the accelerator. 3. Look after your lights Dark mornings and dark evenings can make driving extremely dangerous. It is therefore crucial to ensure all your lights are clean and working properly. Always replace any broken bulbs immediately.
2. Pump up your tyres At this time of year, heavy rain, snow and ice can make the roads lethal for motorists.
If you don’t, you will not only find it difficult to see the road clearly, you run the risk of not being seen by other drivers. Make sure you know where your front and back fog lights are.
To help lower the risk of skidding, check both your car’s tyre condition and pressure are correct
4. Ensure you can see Winter weather can make it more difficult to see clearly when you are driving.
24
To help lower the risk of having an accident always make sure the windscreen is clean and clear, you have plenty of screenwash and your wiper blades are in good condition. When you’re warming up your car, never leave your car unattended with the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked. You only need to turn your back for a second and an opportunist thief could jump in and drive off. 5. Drive safely Finally, make sure you take extra care on the roads. Allow more time for journeys and try to avoid rushing. Keep a safe distance from the car in front, and leave more time to brake and accelerate in wet or icy conditions. Be aware that not everyone on the road will be experienced in driving in these types of conditions so remain alert at all times.

The levels of insulation in newly built property really do help with energy efficiency and keeping rooms warm to hopefully keep your fuel bills down. But if you, like many of us live in an older property, what can you do to keep drafts out? Here are one or two ideas:
1. Vertical blinds are great for security and also add an extra layer of insulation if backed up with Curtains or a Roman Blind 2. If you have space, a door curtain can work wonders as can the old fashioned draft excluder 3. Older radiators are nowhere near as efficient as new modern versions, so why not consider changing your radiators. The

savings on this may take a few years to re coup but it might just be worth having a word with your plumber to ask for a quote. 4. If you are replacing curtains, consider asking for thermal linings, very often the extra cost is minimal ( why not buy some loose thermal linings for existing curtains for use in the winter) 5. For the ultimate in curtain luxury, ask about interlined curtains. Interlining is a thin fleecy lining which is inserted between the fabric and the standard lining. Shut your curtains as soon as dusk falls to notice a real difference in the room temperature. 6. Finally Knitted Throws look great, add a bit of colour or texture to the room and are cosy to drape over your shoulders or legs if it gets really chilly. Keep warm! TXT SPK 4 UNCOOL PPL
I
have three teenagers who are compulsive texters. Hence I receive at least a dozen texts per day. Unfortunately I don’t speak TXT fluently so they take ages for me to decipher. In the end I asked my son to pen me a brief guide. He rolled his eyes then dutifully obliged. I offer it up to other nonTXT-speaking parents.
NP - No problem. To be fair I’d kind of worked this one out, but they use it a lot so I’ve included it. WBU - What about you? PROPS - Proper respect due. E.g. PROPS to Mandy, she passed her test. HMU - Hit me up. It’s a slang way of saying ‘Call me’. W/E - ‘Whatever!’ Total teen-speak! TYVM - Thank you very much. At least they have manners! KK - OK. This seems bizarre but apparently it’s faster to type. Speed is everything when you’re seventeen, unless you’re in the bathroom getting ready for a night out!
BRB - Be right back. Not sure from where, as they are all surgically attached to their phones. SUP - Wassup. I’m assured this is a friendly enquiry along the lines of ‘How are you doing. GR8 - Great. Presumably a suitable reply to SUP. OATUS - On a totally unrelated subject. There are many of these interjections in any TXT conversation with a teenage girl. O RLY - Oh really? Not the innocent expression it may seem. This is a negative, rather sarcastic response. My son uses this one a lot! RL - In real life. This one amuses me endlessly. It refers to life which happens away from the phone or computer. I’m often amazed they realise there is one!

Transform your driveway... For almost 8 years, resindrives.co.uk have been installing bespoke resin driveways, patios and paths across the UK. They are a team of consummate professionals who pride themselves on quality at a fair price.
Achieve Stunning Results In the last 12 months our team has grown considerably, moving to a bigger warehouse in which we are constructing a state of the art external show room to give the public an understanding of what resindrives.co.uk are all about. We believe in looking after our environment and are taking steps to lower our carbon footprint. All our resin drives are made up of natural stone and 100% organic resin, which looks fantastic, and is as strong and durable as concrete without the heavy cost to the planet.
Why Resin over concrete, block paving or tarmac? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through the finished surface which means no more puddles. It is also resistant to weeds, hence giving it all round better traction for tyres, making it safer for walking on and last but not least, it’s up to 10 times more eco friendly than concrete.
We are highly satisfied with our drive.Your workmen were all brilliant and made a lovely job for us, everyone admires it. Mr & Mrs Hawksworth, Filey
