Health and Wellbeing
A Naturopath’s View of Allergies A recent study at Leicester University showed that asthmatics, allergic to the mould, had narrowing of the airways. The narrowing was worse in people who had the moulds growing in their lungs. Evidence may also indicate a link with their presence in some cases of lung cancer.
T
he term allergy was first used in 1906 by an Austrian physician, Clemens von Pirquet. He described an “altered reactivity” which some of his patients experienced in response to substances, allergens, that didn’t affect other people, such as pollen, dust mites or animal hair. We’ve since learnt that multiple factors are responsible for allergic symptoms, such as sneezing, coughing, sinusitis or asthma, and allergens are just the last straw. The allergic reaction is the body’s way of ridding itself of a toxic overload. The liver and kidneys can be overwhelmed so elimination takes place inconveniently through the skin, eyes, nose or lungs. Food intolerances are one of the main factors involved but various types of stress, whether emotional or environmental, can also play a part. Alongside eggs and dairy products, stress is often the main trigger for eczema. There may also be hidden fungal or bacterial infections present. Commonly occurring Aspergillus moulds, found in the soil, compost heaps, animal strawbedding and damp houses, can be responsible for permanent coughs and even asthma.
6
There are homeopathic remedies that will kick start the immune system to help kill these moulds, supported by a yeast and sugarfree diet, or anti-fungal drugs from your GP. Incidentally dust mites thrive alongside Aspergillus mould, which apparently makes skin cells more digestible to the little mites! Hay fever can be caused by an allergy to grass pollen so it may help to cut out all grasses from your diet during the pollen season. Don’t doubt that you eat grass! Wheat, oats, rye and barley are all members of the grass family. However it’s not always as simple as that. Hay fever is triggered by sensitivity to many plants and other foods could be involved, such as dairy products. Vitamins E and C with bioflavanoids and omega- 3-rich foods may help reduce inflammation caused by allergies. Try following the example of the 15th Century Venetian nobleman, Luigi Cornaro, who was possibly the first man to work out his own detox diet. Close to death at only 40 years of age due to excessive eating, he decided to eat less and only the foods that suited him. “Eat less and eat right” was his famous saying. His health was soon restored and despite his relatives worrying that he didn’t eat enough, he lived until 98 and wrote his first treatise on longevity at the age of 83! by Sue Blain

Motoring
T
Cut Your Costs
he cost of motoring is something we can all relate to; from road tax to servicing, fuel to insurance. There are however several ways we can all modify our driving style to reduce the money we spend, whilst reducing emissions and pollution. These eco-driving tips are the motoring equivalent of fitting loft insulation, using low energy light bulbs and not leaving the tv on standby – simple, common sense tips that really will make a difference. A study carried out by the AA in conjunction with AutoExpress Magazine found that by applying the following advice, an average saving of 10% was achieved on their weekly fuel bill! Maintenance Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s servicing schedule and regularly maintain your vehicle, a poorly tuned engine could be using up to 50% more fuel! Check your tyre pressures regularly and before long journeys. Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance and so use more fuel. Getting tyre pressures right is important for safety too. Refer to the handbook as pressures will normally have to be increased for heavier loads. Changing your tyres to those with less ‘rolling resistance’ will also help to increase your MPG, with the added bonus of often being quieter too! Before you go Carrying unnecessary weight means you use extra fuel so if there’s stuff in the boot you don’t need on the journey take it out and leave it at home. Roof racks/boxes create extra wind resistance and so increase fuel consumption. Plan unfamiliar journeys to reduce the chance of getting lost – use online route planners or consider a ‘Sat Nav’. An estimated 350,000 tonnes of fuel is wasted every year by drivers who are lost! Cold starts are inefficient so it pays to combine errands such as buying the paper, dropping-off the recycling, or collecting the kids into one trip rather than making multiple short trips. If it’s a short journey (a couple of miles or
8 88
so) consider walking or cycling rather than taking the car – fuel consumption is worse when the engine’s cold and pollution will be greater too until the emissions control system gets up to normal temperature. On the Way Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking. When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear. If you can keep the car moving all the time, so much the better. Stopping then starting again uses more fuel than keeping rolling. Change gear as soon as possible without laboring the engine – try changing up at an engine speed of around 2000 rpm in a diesel car or around 2500 rpm in a petrol car. This can make such a difference to fuel consumption that all cars in the future are likely to be fitted with Gear Shift indicators that light a lamp on the dashboard to indicate the most efficient gear change points. Drive at or within the speed limit – the faster you go the greater the fuel consumption and the greater the pollution too. According to the Department for Transport driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph. Cruising at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph. Coasting - rolling downhill or approaching a junction with the car out of gear - is inadvisable because the driver doesn’t have full control of the vehicle, though it used to be quite a common practice to save fuel. A modern cars electronic engine management cuts the fuel supply to the injectors when you release the accelerator so there’s nothing to be gained by coasting. How much can you save? The aim is to see how much you can improve on your current average fuel consumption or the ‘official’, manufacturer’s figure by following the advice above. So go on, give ‘eco-driving’ a go and change the way you use your car. You will be helping to conserve the environment and your bank balance!

Lifestyle & Leisure Bank Holidays Ever wonder why we have them?
P
rior to 1834, the Bank of England and other institutions closed on 33 days each year. These were various festivals and saints’ days. But in that year, the number of days the Bank was allowed to close was dramatically reduced to four; 1st May (May Day), 1st November (All Saints Day), Good Friday, and Christmas Day. A lot had happened in Great Britain over the preceding years. The industrial revolution was well under way. Acts of parliament were passed to ensure factories were treating their employees fairly. So it was possibly felt more regulation was also needed in the banking sector. By 1871, the Bank Holidays Act was introduced following strong campaigning by Sir John Lubbock. He was a Liberal politician and, probably not coincidentally, a banker. Unconfirmed legend has it that Lubbock was a keen cricket fan and wanted more time to play the game. The number of bank holidays increased to include Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day. May Day was dropped (it was considered too pagan) and Scotland got an extra day – New Year’s Day. Scotland has always been dealt with separately due to its different traditions. New Year, or Hogmanay, is a more important holiday there. For a while, people called these new bank holidays St Lubbock’s Days in gratitude to their tireless champion. A century later, the ‘Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971’ was passed and remains in force today with a few changes over the years. The moveable Whit Monday break was replaced by the late
10
May spring holiday. Instead of the first Monday, the last Monday in August was set as a bank holiday. May Day was re-introduced in 1978 under the guise of Labour Day. Bank holidays are declared each year by royal proclamation, which is used to move the days if the dates fall on a weekend. This doesn’t happen in all countries. Many people lament that we have too few public holidays compared to other nations, but these places rarely substitute a bank holiday if it falls on a weekend. Royal proclamation also gives us extra days from time to time, like this year for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Apart from Christmas and Easter, few traditions are attached to our current bank holidays. May Day has been observed for centuries as a celebration of life and love, new beginnings, and plants bursting into life. Traditionally, it was an occasion for boisterous high spirits. In many localities festivities still continue, echoing ancient fertility rites. Perhaps the most widely recognised custom on other bank holidays is a modern one…the chance to do some DIY! Suki North

Boiled Fruit Cake
ighter than a rich fruit cake and beautifully moist. If you think fruit cakes are tricky try this one. It couldn’t be simpler. An ordinary teacup is fine for measuring. Ingredients 1 cup of water 225g / 8oz unsalted butter 1 cup of soft brown sugar ½ cup peel (if you don’t like peel, use chopped readyto-eat dried apricots) 1 ½ cups raisins 1 ½ cups sultanas ¼ cup chopped glace cherries 1 tsp mixed spice 2 cups plain flour 1 tsp baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) 2 eggs Method Place the first eight ingredients into a large saucepan and bring it to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 20 minutes, then set aside to cool. established 1987
Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Line a deep 20cm/8inch circular cake tin with greaseproof paper. Mix the beaten eggs well into the fruit mix. It’s important that the mixture has cooled because if it’s too warm the eggs will cook! Then sieve the flour and baking soda into the mixture and mix well. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 1-1½ hours until cooked through (when a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean). If the cake is browning too quickly reduce the temperature a little. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for fifteen minutes, then turn out on to a rack. The cake keeps really well if it’s stored in an airtight tin.

Computer

Backups
ue to various reasons, including power problems, overheating, device failures, I am seeing a lot of computers with either corrupted or failed hard drives. When I see these, people ask me if I can rescue their data. Sometimes it is possible, other times it is not. I always advise people to look at a backup solution for their computers, but I get responses like “I do not use it for business, so I don’t think I will need one as it is not important”. Firstly you need to see how much data (photos, music, word documents etc ) that you currently have to give us a basic starting point. You can use CDs, DVDs or memory sticks and either copy/paste the data or use the CD/DVD buring software on the PC. For larger data, you should look for an external hard drive. These normally have built in backup software that needs configuring. All these are fine, but you must remember to run the backup routine.
An alternative is a network backup device like the Netgear ReadyNAS products http://www.netgear.co.uk/home_desktop_ storage.php?src=home. They sit on your home computer network, and by using the inbuilt backup software they can automatically backup your data as you are using the PC. Another type of backup is a secure internet based, similar to that in the Norton 360 software, accessed via your broadband, but beware, these have an annual cost associated with them. If you do opt for one of these solutions, ensure that the data is on your computer and on the backup location. To hold it only on a backup device is not a backup – as it is in one place. Don’t just rely on the backup to work, check it and test it regularly. If you have any questions, call Bryan from Midland Data Networks (01949 876 098) or email:questions@midlanddatanetworks.co.uk

Hanging Basket Know-How
ave you ever gazed in admiration at a neighbour’s glorious hanging basket and wondered why yours doesn’t measure up? Hanging baskets can be things of abundant beauty, but often they are too sparsely planted or worse, look like abandoned birds nests. If you want to be the object of basket-envy this year, you need to take on board a few trade secrets. The most important thing to note, if you’re new to basket-planting, is that size really does matter. For a good basket you’ll need the minimum of a 35cm / 14 inch size wire frame type. This will have a depth of 15cm / 6 inches which allows for lots of compost and means that the basket won’t dry out quickly. You can also plant through the sides to give that really luxuriant, over-flowing look. Second, for a really showy basket you will almost certainly need twice as many plants as you think you will! For each wire basket, plan to use at least 2 strips (that’s sixteen little plants!) of something like Lobelia or Bidens; two upright plants for the centre top of the basket - small upright fuchsias or geraniums work well; four small bushy flowers like Busy Lizzies or petunias, for round the top edge of the basket, and three or four trailing plants - geraniums and trailing petunias would be perfect. This planting ‘recipe’ can be altered to suit your own tastes. For instance, I sometimes like to swap a couple of the trailing flowers for trailing foliage plants, such as Lysimachia nummularia or small leaved ivies.
22
Line the basket with moss raked from your lawn (though not if you’ve used a weed killer) or a proprietary liner. I prefer the liners because our garden birds steal the moss and my plants begin to fall out after a while! You’ll need about 10 litres of compost. Mix it with water retaining granules for best results. Soak the plants really well, then when you remove the little plants from their trays, you can give the root balls a good squeeze so they will be small enough to poke through the holes in the wire frame of the basket. Build the basket up in three tiers, adding more compost as each tier is planted. The best way to do this is to stand the basket on a large plant pot for stability Once planted, you can stand it in a sheltered area for a week or so if the frosts aren’t quite finished, otherwise you can hang it straight up. Make sure your brackets are sturdy and secure, or your beautiful basket might end up in a crumpled mess on the floor. Keep it watered and feed it once a week, as all those plants crammed into a tiny space deplete the nutrients in the compost very quickly Finally, sit back and enjoy being the object of neighbourhood basket-envy.

Abbey Drives
bbey Drives has been trading for 17 years. We are a family-based businesswhich covers all of the East Midlands. We are a market leader in our field of printed concrete driveways. One of our key goals for the next 12 months is to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. We aim to do this through a range of measures, such as training all our drivers responsible driving techniques. By recycling as much of our waste product as possible therefore minimising landfill eg. Concrete taken from existing drives goes through a recycling process where it is crushed and reused. Soil is also screened and re-used as topsoil and we even recycle old cast manhole covers.Wherever possible we buy greener products. We used to use drainage channels made of a resin composite material. We’ve already switched to using drainage channels made from recycled plastic. All our manholes are now sourced from recycled materials. Even
24
down to the plastic we cover the roads with to keep the site clean and tidy is recycled plastic. By far the biggest benefit we have gained is by using a product called Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA). This is a waste product from power stations which would normally go into landfill but has been widely used in the construction industry for many years as a substitute for cement. Portland Cement manufacture is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the construction industry, responsible for about 5% of all global carbon dioxide emissions. By using PFA we are able to reduce our need for landfill, reduce the amount of cement in our concrete by 30-60%, and cut our concrete produced carbon emissions by 30-60% By taking these environmentally friendly measures we aim to further enhance our reputation and maintain our market leader position in the pattern imprinted concrete industry.
