Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends

W

ith summer coming to an end, it’s time to look ahead to autumn and winter and take a look at the fashion trends that will be gracing the high street shops for the rest of the year. With the long dark nights and dreary weather casting a gloomy shadow over the later seasons, it’s great to see some cheerful colours and patterns coming into fashion for Autumn Winter 2013.

The simplest trend to wear this coming season is pink. Any shade you want, whether that’s fuchsia, nude or anywhere in between, you’ll be bang on trend. This is great as most of us have at least one pink item in our wardrobe so you probably won’t even need to go out and buy anything new. If you do want to buy a new pink item for your wardrobe, why not try mixing it with another trend for a fab value two-in-one style. High shine fabrics and leather are both continuing through from summer into the colder months so keep an eye out for pink versions of these for a super stylish look.

With regards to pattern, there’s a few to choose from this summer. Similarly to high shine and leather, florals are continuing through from summer to brighten up the winter months. Instead of pastel colours though, it’s all about deep rich colours: think deep reds and rich blues in big, beautiful flower prints making it a truly elegant trend. If florals aren’t your thing, there are other print options available. Animal prints and camouflage prints are making a reappearance in Autumn Winter. They’ve been given an elegant overhaul this coming season with silk camouflage tops being paired with classic tailoring for a unique office look. Leopard print is a very versatile pattern as it can be used in every type of garment. For a subtle nod to the trend, opt for just a splash of leopard print whether that’s shoes, bangles or a simple scarf. Don’t be afraid to be bold with this trend as an elegant full print dress can create a striking yet very stylish look which can be accessorised to match several different occasions.

The main shape for Autumn Winter 2013 is big. Oversized garments were shown on many catwalks from Jil Sander to Balenciaga. By layering up clothes underneath an oversized coat, you’ll be snuggly warm in winter whilst still looking bang on trend. A winter coat is also a good investment piece as a well-made coat will last you for years and will always be on trend if you go for a classic cut and style. Finally, the last mostwearable trend from Autumn Winter is masculine tailoring. This is a great way to update your work wardrobe and most importantly, it’s really comfy and easy to wear. Adding simple accessories to a masculine suit, such as a pretty brooch or an elegant silk scarf, makes the outfit more feminine and stylish. Look out for houndstooth printed tailoring as this classic print is big again on the catwalks and high street. Rhiannon Chown r_chown@yahoo.co.uk

Help Out At School

Schools are generally very keen to foster a good relationship with parents and their wider community. Often people are wellintentioned and would like to help out, but don’t know how. Here are some ideas which might appeal. You could become a member of the Parent Teachers Association. Traditionally these were developed to foster better relationships between parents and schools, but they are now generally associated with fundraising. You could be involved with activities as varied as running a stall at the summer fete, overseeing discos for the pupils, or organising quiz evenings for parents. Associations are always looking for innovative fundraising ideas, and bringing in new members can bring additional contacts and different perspectives. Why not become a parent governor? Governors get involved with the strategic decision making of schools. They attend full governor body meetings and usually sit on committees dealing with various aspects of the school, such as staffing finance and curriculum. Parent governors are voted for by the parents of pupils at the school. Core responsibilities include: ensuring accountability; acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Head Teacher;

8

monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress; budgetary allocation and control; planning for the long term future of the school; setting the school’s aims and values, and appointing senior members of staff, including the Head Teacher. Maybe you would like to be a classroom helper. Classroom helpers volunteer to assist teachers on a regular basis, usually in primary schools. They may be in school for half an hour a week, or perhaps up to half a day. They help with tasks such as listening to pupils read. Reading practice is very labourintensive, and helpers can make a big difference to teachers and children. It is generally recommended that you assist in a class which isn’t the one your child is in. Perhaps you could help outside the classroom by going on a school outing. This could be a regular weekly trip to the local swimming pool, occasional days out to places of interest, or helping with the football team.

schools have events where parents and local business people come into school to talk about their careers, or to discuss anecdotes about taking part in a notable event or visiting an unusual place. For all but the most fleeting of visits, you will need to undergo a police background check before you can be part of school activities. It is a standard procedure carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) in England and Wales, and by Disclosure Scotland in Scotland. Many school volunteers not only benefit from a sense of pride and fulfilment at having assisted, but also find that they improve their skills and enhance their CVs. Susan Brookes-Morris

You may also be able to help your child’s school by sharing your experiences. Many senior

My Animals and Other Family – Claire Balding In recent years, Claire Balding has slowly risen to ‘national treasure’ status. Not only does she know a great deal about sport, but she seems to have the knack of showing genuine interest in everything she presents and everyone she talks to. It all appears to be such good fun. This same personality shines out from her autobiography, which covers her childhood, school, university, and the very beginnings of her broadcasting career. As the title suggests, it is the animals who take centre stage in a world that revolves around horses and dogs. Each chapter is based on a particular character, from Candy the boxer dog who was her very first friend, to some of the greats of the equine world who passed through her father’s racing yard. From the first, this feels like a very honest book. Balding does not paint over her faults – she shows them very clearly and is not afraid of being the butt of the joke. The sections which deal with her relationship with her

10

A Good Read younger brother Andrew are likely to feel very familiar to anyone who has ever coerced a younger sibling into doing something they really knew they should not: or indeed to anyone who has ever been that unfortunate younger sibling! Her school life is particularly well told too, as she documents the mistakes she made and the way in which she seized the second chance she was given. The most memorable and touching aspect though, is the passion for the animals who give the book their structure. As well as telling the story of her early life, Balding offers a fascinating insight into the life of a racing yard, and the highs and lows of competitive horse racing when your father is a champion trainer. Beautifully illustrated and always well written, this is an excellent read for anyone interested in sport, animals or even just people. No-Bot: The Robot with No Bottom – Sue Hendra

Can he find the solution? Can he find his bottom? Barry, of course, is The Fish with Fingers; Norman is The Slug with the Silly Shell, and Keith is a Cat with a Magic Hat. If you haven’t met them, then you are in for a treat. Now Bernard is set to join them after an unfortunate incident, in which he leaves his bottom behind on a swing at the park. At first he doesn’t notice, but by the time he does his bottom is long gone – it has been a bird’s nest, a drum and who knows what else! Sadly for Bernard his friends can’t help, and when they advise him to sit down, he has to remind them that he isn’t a robot any more – he is a no-bot. Will he find his bottom before it is too late? This book appeals to young children on so many levels. For a start, it is about bottoms. There is a ‘hide and seek’ element of trying to spot Bernard’s bottom, and even a dance to do. I challenge you to read without giggling! By Kath Bennett

Sue Hendra’s name will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever come across Barry, Norman or Keith. Like the heroes above, Bernard the Robot has an unusual problem.

Bobby Hangs Up His Hi-Vis Vest!

Recycling Ollerton and Boughton is, to all intents and purposes the guys that can be seen every fortnight come rain, shine or snow collecting bottles and jars from participating households in Ollerton, Boughton, Edwinstowe, Walesby, Wellow, Kirton, Eakring, Laxton, Rufford and Egmanton. Formed in 1999 and led by Mike and Joan Tomlinson, a group of people with Learning Difficulties from Whitewater Day Service began the waste collecting and processing enterprise we now know as R.O.B.. As momentum grew, R.O.B. became a Charity and now gives work based training placements to 23 adults with Learning Difficulties, enabling them to actively contribute to their community and build their own confidence and self esteem.

After 14 years of service, Bobby Brewin at the spritely age of 70 has had his retirement bestowed upon him by his body’s insistence that he’s done his bit for the community. Happily, Bobby has not passed away, but has merely taken a step back from his usual routine. Over the years, Bobby has seen R.O.B. grow, from a fledgling social enterprise serving 200 households into a respected local charity, satisfying the recycling needs of 6000 households and almost 100 local businesses. In late 2010, Bobby suffered a couple of strokes which curtailed his activities at

12

Whitewater and at R.O.B. and also brought to an end the endless hours passing time away by watching the traffic pass by outside the family home on the corner of Forest Road and Whinney Lane Bobby’s sister Annette said, “R.O.B. has been Bob’s life. Every minute of the day it’s all he talks about, so on behalf of his family I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of you for the time and attention given to Robert during his time at R.O.B.”

In order to further encourage the development of Life Skills, Adult and Community Learning Services from the Dukeries Complex in Ollerton provide tutors at R.O.B. for all manner of courses. A recent ‘Out and About in the Community’ course has led the people at R.O.B. to broaden their awareness of the whole community. As a result, two of the Students came up with an idea to raise funds for the Air Ambulance. This was done by selling plants that were grown in R.O.B.’s Polytunnel during a horticulture course. The profit made after taking away the costs of seeds and compost was then donated to representatives of ‘The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Service’. A cheque for £224.11 was presented to Sue and Gerald Halpin when they came along to R.O.B.’s base in July. If you would like to support R.O.B., get your glass collected and require a recycling box and bags, please contact R.O.B. on 01623 863955, email: info@recyclingollerton.co.uk or visit our website at www.recyclingollerton. co.uk

Super Sunset Photo’s

Autumn is the best time of year for beautiful sunsets. Capturing them on camera can be tricky though. Here’s how to take better sunset pics. Choose the time and place – Make a note of places where you’ve seen wonderful sunsets, then make a point of travelling there before the sunset to give you time to set your camera up. There are some great websites which tell you what time the sun will set on a particular day. Try www. sunsettimes.co.uk. Think foreground – The best sunset photos tend to have something of interest in the foreground, generally silhouetted, to provide a focal point. Look for a great tree, or a wind farm, even pylons can look picturesque in front of a sunset. Patience and a tripod are very handy –

14

Sunset actually goes on for quite a long time. As the sun dips beneath the horizon it can produce some spectacular shots, but afterwards, the colours of the sky can become even more rich and beautiful, so hang around. The best shots are often longer exposures, so they will look shaky unless you secure your camera to a tripod. Ignore ‘the rule of thirds’ – It’s a good rule, but with sunsets you generally want to place your horizon really low down in the shot so the picture is filled with colour. Use reflections if available – If you are near water take full advantage of doubling the impact of your sunset. Experiment by placing the horizon at exactly half way, or fill the shot with reflections only. By Louise Addison

Fly High In The Autumn Sky

W

ouldn’t it be wonderful to get a birdseye view of autumn’s fabulous colours? Well that’s exactly what you get when you take a hot air balloon flight. Here’s Susan Brookes’ description of her recent trip:

I joined a group of excited passengers at the launch point and listened to the pilot’s safety briefing. Behind him, the balloon’s envelope was being filled with air using an enormous fan. The pilot judged our weights and sizes and told us all where to stand ready for boarding. Once in position, we watched with awe as the material became more and more inflated. Men rushed about manoeuvring the 100ft long nylon material to hasten filling. When the shout to board came, we moved rapidly to clamber into the then vertical basket. The balloon was unsecured and we began to lift off. Rising high into the sky, we waved to the gathered well wishers who quickly became just dots in the distance. As we headed to heights of up to 3000 feet, we were treated to a bird’s eye view of the countryside below. The whole landscape stretched before us: fields, trees, livestock in the fields, streams and lakes. It was a beautiful sight.

16

The huge balloon moved silently across the sky. The calm only interrupted by the passengers’ conversation and the periodic blast of the burners injecting the spell-binding fire into the belly of the balloon. The temperature was surprisingly similar to that at ground level, but with the added bonus of the glow from the flame. Our lovely pilot cheerfully answered all our questions, pointed out landmarks, and told us about the skill of ballooning. Satellite navigation systems are installed in the balloons, but pilots also take maps in case equipment fails. Travel is so gentle because the balloon is moving at the same speed as the wind, and even the most apprehensive passenger soon relaxed and admired the views. When it was time for our flight to end, the pilot descended slowly. I had expected a jerky landing,

but the contact of the basket with the ground slowed the progress of the balloon and brought it to a halt quite gently, within a couple of bounces. The basket slowly tilted on its side as it came to rest in a field and the balloon began to deflate in the breeze. We found ourselves lying on our backs, rather like wine bottles in a rack, laughing at the fun of it all. For safety reasons, hot air ballooning can only take place when there are suitable weather conditions. Most in our group had waited a while before we finally got the opportunity to take to the skies, but we all agreed the wait for such a thrilling experience had been worthwhile and we’d love to do it again. If you would like learn more about ballooning in our area contact the Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club on 0115 8541028. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Employment Contract Terms

The terms of an employment contract are the rights and obligations which bind the employer and employee. The terms of a contract can be:

express (those which are explicitly agreed between the employer and employee, either in writing or orally) implied (those which have not been spelled out but which would be taken by the people involved to form part of the contract) or statutory Express terms may be established by referring to various sources, particularly the written statement of terms and conditions (to which most employees are entitled under the Employment Rights Act 1996). Implied terms may arise as a result of custom and practice or through the need to include workable practical directions and statutory terms are imposed by legislation. An employer may wish to vary the terms of the contract because of changed economic circumstances or due to a reorganization of the business. Possible areas of change could include pay rates, hours or days worked, duties, supervisory relationships or place of work. An existing contract of employment can be varied only with the agreement of both parties. Variations to the contract can be

18

agreed verbally or in writing. It is preferable for any agreed changes to be recorded in writing. If an employer imposes changes to a contract unilaterally the employee may; a) make legal claims against the company for constructive dismissal if the breach is fundamental and significant b) claim damages for breach of contract at a civil court c) claim at an employment tribunal for unlawful deduction from wages if the change affects their pay. If an employee fails to agree to the change but does not inform the employer AND works under the new terms and conditions, this could be perceived that they have accepted the changes. If at a later date the employee decided to make a claim to an Employment Tribunal, the Tribunal will take into account the employees conduct and may determine acceptance of the changes because of this. It is important that the employee notifies the employer of their dissatisfaction and works under protest or brings a claim/grievance depending upon their level of non-acceptance. If you wish to discuss any employment related issues then please contact Marc Turner on 01623-460444 or mturner@ alcocks-solicitors.co.uk . Certain cases may qualify for a “no win no fee” agreement.

Buying A Used Car

Buying a car is a costly business, which is why it makes sense to check out the used car market where you can save thousands of pounds. Unfortunately it can also be fraught with problems if you don’t get it right. Here’s how to minimise the risks and give yourself the best chance of finding a bargain. Research Once you’ve decided on the type of car you need (based on your particular priorities with regards to comfort, economy and space), research the costs to purchase, tax, insure, service and fuel it. Bear in mind that although older models are often cheaper to buy, they can be more costly to run and may work out more expensive in the long term. Fact Find

Have a list of questions to ask the seller before viewing the vehicle. Find out about previous owners; the mileage; the condition; how long the MOT and tax have to run; whether it has ever been written off, in an accident or stolen; if it has any finance outstanding; whether there is a log book, full service history, MOTs and receipts; and whether

22

any maintenance needs doing. Inspection

Always view the vehicle at the seller’s address in daylight and in dry weather. Check the sills, wheel arches and door bottoms for rust. Make sure all lights and seat belts work. Check the condition of the tyres and mirrors. Look for mismatched or bubbling paint and uneven gaps

between body panels. Check that the mileage is about correct for the car’s age (average is 10,000 per year). If the odometer numbers are out of line the mileage may have been tampered with. Check that the car’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), found under the bonnet and on the windows, matches the number on the V5 certificate (log book).

Test Drive Drive the car for at least 15 minutes on different kinds of roads. Listen for unusual noises and look for excessive smoke from the exhaust. Make sure you’re happy with the brakes, gears, steering and suspension. If anything shakes, rattles or grates, the car may have problems that need sorting out. Paperwork Once you have agreed a price, make sure that all paperwork looks and feels genuine (no photocopies). Check that the VIN and recorded keeper details tally with the seller, and examine the service history and MOT certificates to verify the mileage. Get a receipt for your payment from the seller, and finally – make sure the new keeper sections of the log book are completed. Taking a knowledgeable friend along is always a good idea. Failing that, the AA and RAC both offer inspection services. You have to pay but for peaceof-mind it may be worth it. Good luck - and happy motoring! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Dukeries U3A

The Dukeries U3A has had some very interesting events recently. Saturday, 27th July was the day when we held our very successful Summer Ball - with 116 members in attendance. A very good professional singer and a superb buffet supper, supplied by outside caterers, made it an evening to remember. The experience may be repeated in the New Year, such was the feeling of goodwill generated. Over twenty members went on a day trip to Greenwich to explore the Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory and other places of interest – preceded by a clipper boat trip along the Thames. And Renishaw Hall and gardens was the destination for a sizable contingent from the Gardening Group. By the time this issue reaches you we will have held our

Dodge

summer Garden Party and we are all keeping our fingers crossed for good weather on the day! And speaking of good weather the outside activity groups – the Amblers, Ramblers, garden visiting, etc. have been basking in the good weather we have currently enjoyed. If you are retired or semi-retired and wish to enjoy a good social life amongst friends, why not find out more about us by coming to one of our monthly meetings? You will receive a friendly welcome. We meet at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton on the third Thursday of the month at 1.30. (Doors open at 1pm). For more information call either 01623 824789 or 01623 862287. Visitors are charged just £1 for a visit and, if you decide to join, annual membership is only £17.

Hey Guys! Read This!

It could save your life

Testicular cancer is relatively rare, yet it is the most common type of cancer to affect men aged between 15 and 44. Factors that can increase the risk include having a family history of the disease, and being born with undescended testicles. Rates of the disease are also five times higher in white men than in black men. Thankfully, the outlook for men diagnosed with testicular cancer is one of the best for all types of cancer. Over 95% of cases of men with early stage testicular cancer will be completely cured. Even cases where the cancer has spread outside the testicles have an 80% chance of being cured. As with other cancers, early detection improves your prognosis and can reduce the amount of treatment necessary. The most common symptom to look out for is a painless lump or swelling in a testicle. Read how to examine yourself below, but be aware that fewer than 4 in 100 testicular lumps are cancerous. Other symptoms may include a dull ache or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.

26

Sometimes, testicular cancer can spread to the lymph glands at the back of the abdomen, which can cause backache. Lumps can also form in the lymph glands around the neck and collarbone. Testicular cancer can spread to the lymph nodes in the centre of the chest. This leads to swelling, a cough and difficulty in breathing or swallowing. The cancer cells may also spread to the lungs themselves causing breathlessness, but they do not usually affect other organs. Treatment of testicular cancer involves surgically

removing the affected testicle. This should not affect fertility or the ability to have sex, and a false testicle can be put in place so that the scrotum will have a normal appearance. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy or additional surgery may also be required, depending on the type and spread of the disease. How to Examine Yourself You should check your testicles regularly – once a month is a good interval. The best time to do this is after a warm bath or shower when your scrotal skin will be relaxed. Hold the scrotum in the palms of your hands and use your fingers and thumb to gently feel each testicle. Look out for any lumps or swellings, or an increase in size or weight. (You should feel a soft tube at the back of each testicle – this is normal). It is rare to develop cancer in both testicles at the same time, so you can compare one with the other to see what is normal. If you notice anything unusual, contact your GP as soon as possible. Stay Out Of Debt

Being in debt is no fun and it’s easier to get into debt than out of it. Stay out of debt with our five top tips.

Budget – It sounds obvious, but an astonishing number of us don’t know what we actually spend each month. For two months write down every outgoing and you might be surprised at how much of cash you fritter away. Make a list of regular commitments utility bills, mortgage, outstanding loans etc.; a list of necessary evils - petrol, train tickets etc; a list of desirables - holidays, salon trips etc.; and a list of non-essentials. Boost your cash – This can be done in two ways: Cut all unnecessary expenditure, or increase your income. It might not be a good time economically to ask for a pay-rise, but could you take on some extra work in return for a little more in your pay packet? What about selling your unwanted items on eBay, or even starting your own

28

little business using a skill or hobby you already have, such as sewing, baking, computer or language skills?

Use credit cards – Yes, you read that correctly. If used wisely they can be a helpful cash-management tool. With some cards you get cash back for spending. So by putting your regular expenditure, such as groceries, on your card you can earn money. Only do this if you are prepared to pay the balance off in full after the grace period (generally 30 days). Save don’t spend – Any surplus cash should be saved. Allocate some for holidays or other desirable items, and some for emergencies. Any left over can be put into a longer term savings account. DIY – Often we pay people for services we could easily manage ourselves. Try washing your own car or making your own packed lunch for a month and see how much you save. By Sarah Davey
