Home & Garden The Next Dimension 3D effects are taking the cinema world by storm, but is 3D TV worth investing in? When James Cameron’s Avatar burst into cinemas in 2009, the world woke up to the potential for three-dimensional films to astound, amaze and capture our imaginations. The ground-breaking movie started a trend for spectacular effects in cinematography, and many new films are now shown in 3D, as well as major sporting events including London’s Olympic Games. There’s no doubt that watching 3D films at the cinema can be thrilling, but is it worth trying to recreate the experience at home? You might be surprised to learn that the cost can be only slightly more than a regular set-up. You will need to get a 3D compatible TV, 3D glasses and access to 3D programmes or films. There are two types of 3D technology. Passive 3D is the type used in cinemas. To watch, you wear cheap lightweight glasses that allow your eyes to see differently polarised light. Your brain combines what each eye sees to create the 3D image. You can also get passive 3D glasses that clip onto normal specs.

£500 to several thousands. Larger screens will give you a better experience. With smaller sets, you may need to sit closer to the screen to get the full effect. All 3D TVs can display 2D pictures as well – you simply switch off the 3D function and they become a normal high-definition TV. Once you have your equipment, you can decide what you are going to watch. For films, you get the best picture quality with Blu-ray. You will need to invest in a Blu-ray player and films on Blu-ray disk. You can also play Blu-rays (and 3D games) on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. You can watch other programmes on Sky’s own 3D channel, which comes with its more expensive monthly packages. With Virgin Media and BT Vision, you can watch 3D films on demand. The BBC occasionally shows sporting events in 3D on its HD channel. Currently, 3D television is definitely an optional extra, but if growth continues at its present rate, it might not be that long before everything we watch is threedimensional.

Active 3D gives you a higher resolution picture, but the glasses are bulkier to wear. While passive 3D TVs generally come with several pairs of glasses, you may have to buy active ones separately, at around £30 a pair. They work by synchronising with the TV and playing back rapidly blinking images to your eyes. (For this reason, manufacturers warn that they are unsuitable for people with a history of epilepsy or strokes.) 3D televisions can cost anything from under

Wonderful Wellies!

pots, stripes, flowers or leopard print – wellington boots are no longer reserved for farmers, they’ve become a fashionable footwear essential. People have been wearing boots to keep their feet warm and dry for thousands of years. The earliest snow boots were discovered on an ancient iceman thought to be 5000 years old, and were made from bearskin, tree bark and deer pelts. Of course, the welly as we know it is named after the Duke of Wellington. He asked his shoemakers to adapt the hessian boots worn by men in the mid18th century so that they were waterproof, and provided more protection in battle. They designed a leather boot that had a low heel and fitted closely to the leg. Meanwhile, the industrial manufacture of rubber was being developed, and an American called Henry Lee Norris founded the North British Rubber Company in Scotland. Now known as Hunter Boot Ltd, the factory made the first rubber wellingtons which became popular with farmers. Production rapidly increased during World War I, when the War Office asked Hunter to make boots that would keep the men’s feet dry in the trenches. Again in World War II, the factory supplied the boots for British forces working in flooded conditions.

Cheaper wellies tend to be made from PVC. These are fine for occasional wear, but they can make your feet sweat and are not very hardwearing. 100% rubber boots are more expensive, but will last longer. Boots lined with neoprene will keep your feet really warm. With cotton-lined boots, you can decide whether or not you need to wear socks for extra warmth. If you have wide calves, look for wellingtons with a waterproof gusset so you can adjust the fit. Some wellies have special treads to make them more suitable for walking long distances. Snow boots have a thick rubber sole, a laced upper, and often a fleece collar around the top. Of course, when you get home from your walk in the wet, you’re faced with the age-old problem of getting your wellies off. Some boots fold down at the top, or have a gusset or zip to loosen them. Failing that, you can buy an inexpensive boot jack – simply wedge your heel in the jaws, tread on the base and pull!

After the wars, wellies became popular with workers and the general public, and in the last few years, manufacturers have taken the traditional design and given it an injection of colour and style. Anything goes these days you can even get white wedding wellingtons! If you need a new pair of boots this winter, here is a quick round-up of what to look for:

Tips and Tricks.....

utumn / winter skin can be most problematic. It can become dry and tight or a combination of dry with oily areas.

Adjust your skin care regime to suit a more dehydrating climate. If you normally use cleansing milk, try a cleansing cream instead and a heavier moisturiser to avoid skin becoming dry due to the change in humidity. Exfoliate weekly so that external factors such as wind, rain and the cold don’t acerbate dry or flaky skin. This season sees a longer sweeping, thicker line for eyebrows which frame the eyes beautifully. If you have been overzealous with the tweezers over the summer then use an eyebrow pencil in the opposite direction of the hair grown to ensure a full coverage and then brush in

14

the correct direction. Finish by blending a small amount of Christian eyebrow powder, matched to the natural hair colour. The weather changing in autumn can cause nails to become brittle and break really easily. Try and go for something that lasts longer, like GEL FX gel nails. This will keep nails looking long and beautiful, for up to 2 weeks. Although the sun is not shining after summer is over you should still use sun factor facial products as it is a brilliant barrier from the cold and windy weather. Even though your body may be hidden away in the autumn and winter months it is still important to wax, so by the time summer comes around you will have maintained thin hair growth and waxing will be less painful.

Business Focus

Nottinghamshire Logs A local business has been awarded a national quality mark for supplying firewood. Nottinghamshire Logs is the only log processor in the East Midlands to be accredited by HETAS as part of their quality assured fuel scheme. The Southwell based company was started three years ago by Henry Starkey, and now supplies around 1800 tonnes of locally produced wood to homes and businesses. As well as selling direct we also supply local garages, garden centres, stove shops, builders’ merchants, and several councils.” The growth in renewable forms of heating has meant an increase in demand for real fires and wood burning stoves. Because trees consume carbon dioxide as they grow, wood and biomass are considered carbon neutral when they are used for heating. Many consumers are now using wood burning stoves as an economical and environmentally friendly way to heat their main living room rather than switching on their whole heating system as well as saving up to 50% on their fuel bills. The HETAS accreditation means that Nottinghamshire Logs has been recognised for supplying firewood with less than 25% moisture content of below. For anyone with an open fire or wood burning stove moisture content is very important as unseasoned wood – or wood which has not been dried out properly – can be very inefficient.

heat as unseasoned ones. Unseasoned wood will also release more smoke and tars into the chimney, which means it will need sweeping more frequently. The HETAS accreditation process also ensures that firewood supplied by Nottinghamshire Logs is produced from sustainable sources, and that production adheres to a strict quality control process. All logs are sourced locally from sustainably managed woodland, looking after the local environment whilst supporting other local businesses. At peak times the company employs up to 15 staff, and can deliver logs free of charge throughout Nottinghamshire.

Wet, unseasoned wood will not burn very well, giving off very little heat. This is because most of the heat from the fire is used up drying the wood out first before it can give off any energy into the room. Well-seasoned logs such as those supplied by Nottinghamshire Logs can give out twice as much

Garden View

Too tidy or not too tidy?

I

’ve heard people in the past say that gardening is nothing more than outdoor housework, and I’ve had a few people say to me that they’d love a ‘tidy garden’, but can a garden be too tidy? I enjoy the contemporary look of a formal garden with clean lines and tightly clipped planting, but I am also pleased to see more naturalistic planting, examples of which we saw earlier in the year at the Olympic Park. It would seem though, that my choice of ‘tidy’ plants is not always cherished by others.

grasses; to bin the beautiful dried Allium skeletons, or slash the Verbena bonariansis to the ground, denying the birds the seed? I don’t know, but what I am proposing is to leave well alone for at least another month and enjoy the range of oatmeal brown colours for a little while longer … and as for mum … well, let’s just say the compost bin is already overflowing!

“This plant is far too messy for me” yelled a voice from deep within the herbaceous border. It came from a woman on a mission to hack down the flower spikes which had shot up from her Stipa gigantea. I sat in the conservatory and thought ‘thank goodness I don’t still live at home!’

• Sow sweet peas in a cold greenhouse

As a garden designer, people pay me to advise them what they should grow, be it something suitable for the location, something fashionable, or something that will compliment the colour of their new jacquard curtains! But it wasn’t until I sat there and watched my mum tear out those delicate flower spikes that I realised not everyone likes the same plants, or has the same understanding of a ‘tidy garden’.

Other jobs to do this month:

• Plant wallflowers without delay • Lightly prune roses to prevent wind rock • November is the best month to plant tulip bulbs. Bury holly leaves with bulbs if squirrels are a problem (wear your gloves though!) • Resist pruning hydrangeas - the dead flowers will protect bulbs from the frost • Clean out bird nesting boxes - wear gloves to avoid any parasites. Until next month, enjoy your garden.

Compact plants with a neat growing habit have to be the best of both worlds, because you don’t have to prune against its natural growth habit, therefore making yourself less work in the garden. For this reason evergreens are the perfect choice, as they don’t shed leaves onto the lawn in autumn and are generally slow growing. Shrubs such as Aucuba japonica ‘Rozannie’ and Euphorbia ‘Blackbird’, or the more colourful herbaceous Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturn’ which never needs staking, just ‘chopping’ once per year. With this in mind, will I be cutting back and tidying up the garden this November? Is it right to sweep up the leaves from the borders, denying hedgehogs of the insulation crispy leaves provide, not to mention food the worms will drag into the soil. Is it fair to snip the seed heads from the ornamental

We Will Remember Them Why do we wear a poppy?

Scarlet poppies grow wild all over Western Europe wherever the soil has been disturbed. The battles of the First World War churned up such vast areas of earth that millions of poppies germinated and bloomed, often around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. A Canadian surgeon called John McRae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields in which the poppies symbolise the deaths of those who fought. It is a haunting memorial to those soldiers who have died in any war.

years of fighting and devastation finally ended. The following year ceremonies of remembrance took place on what was known as Armistice Day. An Australian journalist, Edward George Honey first proposed a respectful silence to remember the dead. He wrote a letter to the London Evening News which was brought to the attention of King George V. The king then issued a proclamation which called for a two minute silence.

Why do we have a two minute silence?

Home & Garden Oven Pride

I

n one survey it was voted the most hated household chore. It is dirty, difficult and time consuming and many don’t do it at all. Those who do tackle it usually end up dirty, tired and frustrated. It is, of course, cleaning the oven - so why not hire a professional?! A professional oven cleaning company will start restoring your grubby, greasy oven to its former gleaming glory by first immersing the racks, shelves and pans in a tank – usually situated in their specialist vehicle. Whilst they soak, the oven (or cooker, hob or microwave) will get a thorough clean on both the inside and out.

26

Following the clean, the racks and shelves will be replaced and your oven should then be ready for immediate use. A single oven takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to clean and costs around ÂŁ50 and you can double this for a range. When choosing an oven cleaner, be sure to check exactly what is included in the price. Many companies charge extra for grill pans, for example. Oven cleaning is not rocket science but when you choose a professional for the job, you get someone who has been properly trained, who understands what techniques and products work best and who can generally do a much better job in a fraction of the time!
