Is your car ready for winter? things. First, anything falling from the sky is going to end up on your windscreen, and second, in areas that see snowfall in the winter, you’re also driving through that soupy muck that’s left on the road once the gritters have done their thing. This muck includes a lot of sand and salt, both of which end up on your windshield. It takes wipers that are in top shape to keep your windscreen clean and safe.
W
inter is upon us, and winter driving comes with it. While safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to chilled air and winter driving that are a good idea to check into before we’re knee deep in the season. Winter Specific Maintenance In addition to the added perils of winter driving, the change in weather can bring peril to your car’s systems. Freezing temps, salted roads and wintery precipitation can gang up on your car if you don’t give it a seasonal maintenance session. These winter maintenance jobs will keep you out of trouble: Check your antifreeze Your antifreeze (the juice that goes in your radiator) is an essential part of your car’s winter protection. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is close to 50/50. Many auto service stations and repair centres will check this mixture free, or you can buy a tester for around £5. You did remember to perform a radiator flush last spring, didn’t you? Inspect your tyres The last line of defense between you and an oak tree are your tyres. Winter is not the time to get cheap about your tyres, so take the time to check the tread depth. Also, be sure to check your tyre pressure. Believe it or not, they lose a little pressure when it gets cold, so pump ‘em up. Replace your wipers Wipers? What do your windscreen wipers have to do with winter weather? Two

Check your windscreen washer fluid You’ll be using lots of washer fluid as you try to keep your windscreen sparkly. A mile stuck behind an 18-wheeler will have your windscreen looking like a Desert Humvee if you’re low on washer fluid. *Tip: Don’t fill your washer fluid reservoir with anything except washer fluid, it won’t freeze! Annual Maintenance Procedures On top of the checks you need to perform to ensure safe winter driving, now’s a good time to do some annual maintenance. These aren’t necessarily specific to winter driving, but it’s a good point on the calendar to get around to doing this stuff. Clean your battery posts Starting problems are a bummer any time of year. Regularly treating your battery to a cleaning can keep electrical gremlins at bay. Inspect your spark plug wires Cracked up plug wires affect performance, gas mileage and general reliability. Be sure yours are in top shape. Inspect your brakes Brakes are not a good area to cut corners. Be sure your brakes have enough meat left to get you through the season. Check Your Engine OIl This should go without saying and should be done at least monthly. But in case you’re an amnesiac ... you should also do an oil change! Cold weather safety should be a concern for anybody living in a cold climate. These tips will give you the upper hand when Old Man Winter tries to put a chill on your winter travels. Home & Garden The Next Dimension 3D effects are taking the cinema world by storm, but is 3D TV worth investing in? When James Cameron’s Avatar burst into cinemas in 2009, the world woke up to the potential for three-dimensional films to astound, amaze and capture our imaginations. The ground-breaking movie started a trend for spectacular effects in cinematography, and many new films are now shown in 3D, as well as major sporting events including London’s Olympic Games. There’s no doubt that watching 3D films at the cinema can be thrilling, but is it worth trying to recreate the experience at home? You might be surprised to learn that the cost can be only slightly more than a regular set-up. You will need to get a 3D compatible TV, 3D glasses and access to 3D programmes or films. There are two types of 3D technology. Passive 3D is the type used in cinemas. To watch, you wear cheap lightweight glasses that allow your eyes to see differently polarised light. Your brain combines what each eye sees to create the 3D image. You can also get passive 3D glasses that clip onto normal specs.
£500 to several thousands. Larger screens will give you a better experience. With smaller sets, you may need to sit closer to the screen to get the full effect. All 3D TVs can display 2D pictures as well – you simply switch off the 3D function and they become a normal high-definition TV.
Once you have your equipment, you can decide what you are going to watch. For films, you get the best picture quality with Blu-ray. You will need to invest in a Blu-ray player and films on Blu-ray disk. You can also play Blu-rays (and 3D games) on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. You can watch other programmes on Sky’s own 3D channel, which comes with its more expensive monthly packages. With Virgin Media and BT Vision, you can watch 3D films on demand. The BBC occasionally shows sporting events in 3D on its HD channel. Currently, 3D television is definitely an optional extra, but if growth continues at its present rate, it might not be that long before everything we watch is threedimensional.
Active 3D gives you a higher resolution picture, but the glasses are bulkier to wear. While passive 3D TVs generally come with several pairs of glasses, you may have to buy active ones separately, at around £30 a pair. They work by synchronising with the TV and playing back rapidly blinking images to your eyes. (For this reason, manufacturers warn that they are unsuitable for people with a history of epilepsy or strokes.) 3D televisions can cost anything from under

Community CLIC Sargent
CLIC Sargent are looking for volunteers to grab a bucket this December in support of the Big Bucket Collection, a national fundraising event run by CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people. CLIC Sargent has been offered the chance to hold a Big Bucket Collection at Asda Supermarket in West Bridgford on 30th November and are asking if any Spotlight readers could give a little time, with friends, family or colleagues, to help out on the day? If you could spare just a few hours to help please get in touch! The Big Bucket Collection is held every December as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This December, CLIC Sargent is highlighting the impact of cancer on the school life of younger children.

Staying in school can be difficult for children undergoing cancer treatment. It may be difficult for them to keep up with schoolwork and also to stay in touch with friends, which can make them feel isolated and left out. CLIC Sargent do all they can to help but right now they can only help two out of three children who need their support, and that’s why the money that local volunteers could help to raise is so important. If you can spare a little time to help make a big difference please contact the CLIC Sargent team on 0845 121 2495 or visit www.clicsargent.org.uk/ bigbucketcollection

Christmas Tree Festival
omehow, I always think that it really feels as though Christmas is coming when it’s time to set up the Christmas tree!
With eager anticipation the decorations and lights and are spread across the branches and the colours, sights and smells instantly brighten the dark December days. Now, how much better would it be if all of the work was done for you? And how about the prospect of not just one tree, but forty spectacular trees, each dressed in individual style? If that idea sounds appealing, then you must put a date in your diary to visit the Christmas Tree Festival at West Bridgford Methodist Church next month. There you will find that a wide range of church and community groups, including local schools, have each been working to mount a colourful display for your benefit. You can see the results on Saturday 1st and 8th December between 10.00am
and 5.00pm and after viewing the trees you are invited to sample our home made refreshments which will include lunches and afternoon teas. The churchwill also be open on the afternoons of Sunday 2nd and 9th December between 2.00pm and 5.00pm to allow more time to call in, and on these dates we will also be serving a range of hot drinks with freshly baked cakes and mince pies as well. Even better, the whole event is being provided completely free of charge, although of course many of the groups who have set up the trees would welcome your donations in support of their chosen charities. We look forward to seeing you, and guarantee that this event will have plenty to delight young and old alike as we prepare for the Christmas celebrations. Make sure that you don’t miss this community event and the chance to meet friends in comfortable surroundings!
Start your celebration of Christmas by joining us to view 40 colourful trees on display throughout each weekend

Nottinghamshire Logs A local business has been awarded a national quality mark for supplying firewood. Nottinghamshire Logs is the only log processor in the East Midlands to be accredited by HETAS as part of their quality assured fuel scheme. The Southwell based company was started three years ago by Henry Starkey, and now supplies around 1800 tonnes of locally produced wood to homes and businesses. As well as selling direct we also supply local garages, garden centres, stove shops, builders’ merchants, and several councils.” The growth in renewable forms of heating has meant an increase in demand for real fires and wood burning stoves. Because trees consume carbon dioxide as they grow, wood and biomass are considered carbon neutral when they are used for heating. Many consumers are now using wood burning stoves as an economical and environmentally friendly way to heat their main living room rather than switching on their whole heating system as well as saving up to 50% on their fuel bills. The HETAS accreditation means that Nottinghamshire Logs has been recognised for supplying firewood with less than 25% moisture content of below. For anyone with an open fire or wood burning stove moisture content is very important as unseasoned wood – or wood which has not been dried out properly – can be very inefficient.
heat as unseasoned ones. Unseasoned wood will also release more smoke and tars into the chimney, which means it will need sweeping more frequently. The HETAS accreditation process also ensures that firewood supplied by Nottinghamshire Logs is produced from sustainable sources, and that production adheres to a strict quality control process. All logs are sourced locally from sustainably managed woodland, looking after the local environment whilst supporting other local businesses. At peak times the company employs up to 15 staff, and can deliver logs free of charge throughout Nottinghamshire.
Wet, unseasoned wood will not burn very well, giving off very little heat. This is because most of the heat from the fire is used up drying the wood out first before it can give off any energy into the room. Well-seasoned logs such as those supplied by Nottinghamshire Logs can give out twice as much

The Bombay Bridgford
ottingham as a city and West Bridgford in particular, possess many attributes, especially in respect to restaurants, bars and cafes. This fact has certainly made my life more pleasurable, although the growth in waist line is an increasing cross to bear. The one gap, food wise, in my humble opinion, has been the lack of a quality Indian restaurant that serves great food, but has not ruined itself with an emphasis on style over substance. Thus, the advent of the Bombay near Trent Bridge has been a true blessing for all lovers of Indian cuisine . I must confess to have been spoilt with regards to quality Indian food, and this I feel has perhaps jaundiced my perceptions of Nottingham in this regard. I lived in Birmingham for over ten years, and have been fortunate enough to experience some of the finest Indian influenced cuisine in that fair city. Furthermore my quest for culinary delights – Indian wise – has seen my board the slow boat to Bradford where I was lucky enough to never be disappointed. Thus, maybe I have been too harsh on Nottingham, as nowhere I have eaten has been able to match up to Bradford and Birmingham; that is until now… When I was first recommended to the Bombay I was sceptical to say the least: there have been too many disappointments, too many occasions when I was glad there was very cold beer being dispensed, and there was nowhere that I ever wanted to go back to twice. The Bombay has changed all that, as Ifraz and his staff not only serve excellent freshly cooked food, but the welcome you receive is always as warm as the heat of the food.
is noticeable as the menu reflects the man’s love of the food from the Indian subcontinent, as well as his mastery of the finer cooking techniques required. The menu is interesting in that not only does it cover all the usual favourites so beloved by the British punter, but some unusual, yet delicious, regional specialties from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The starters present the gastronaut with nothing they would not find too unfamiliar, but my tip for two of you (or more) is to try the Tandoori platter. Fantastic !! I can’t recommend the Bombay highly enough as I am a regular there now. I have tried too many mains to list them all here, but have never been disappointed. The welcome has always been warm, the food excellent, and the service exceptional. If you too have experienced that nagging feeling of not being able to experience quality Indian cooking in Nottingham fret no more. The Bombay is here to save you.
I mention Ifraz deliberately as he must be, if not unique, then very much a rarity, as he is not only the owner of the Bombay, but is also the head chef. This

Start Your Pension Early
eople who delay contributing to a workplace pension until their 30’s could miss out on more than £300,000 from their pension pot, research by FriendsLife has found. FriendsLife compared a 22 year old man who saved £162 a month into a pension, rising by 2.5 % per year until 65, with a man who did not start contributing to a pension until 32. They found that the 22 year old eventually built up a pension pot of £604,166 which could mean a projected income of £34,411 per year whereas the 32 year old built up a pension fund of £286,799, which could mean a pension income of £16,451 per year. A big difference! The figures of course seem big and to some maybe unaffordable, but the key message is the same whether you can save £100 per month or £162 per month.....START EARLY

Getting into the habit of saving is something that we have grown out of. If we talk to parents and grandparents, often direct sales people used to pop round and collect money off them every week or so to put into policies. They were good at saving, unfortunately with the invention of credit cards and personal loans we have become good at spending. This credit crunch has impacted on so many people and obtaining credit has become more difficult, so why don’t we learn from our parents and grandparents....put some money away each month, whether for retirement, for a car, for holidays or for children’s university fees and let me help you plan for a wealthier future. For help with any aspect of your financial planning, contact Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions, for a free initial meeting, by telephone on 07817 618823 or by e-mail justin@itmakessense.net .
