Health and Wellbeing Carrots

‌ and other Colourful Carotenoids! Carrots...? An article in praise of the humble carrot? Yes, they really do help us to see in the dark! They are one of the top carotenoid foods containing the yellow/ orange pigment, called beta-carotene, also found in apricots, cantaloupe melon, papaya, pumpkin, butternut squash, sweet potato and green vegetables like kale, Romaine lettuce, broccoli and spinach, where the green chlorophyll disguises the yellow pigment. Leafy greens also contain lutein, another carotenoid, which like beta-carotene is also essential for eye health and may help to reduce the effects of macular degeneration. Tomatoes and water melon contain beta-carotene as well as the red pigment, lycopene, which is believed to help memory. So carotenoids are vital, colourful nutrients that should be included in our diets. They are considered some of the best immune-boosting antioxidents. They mop up oxidising free-radicals, the chemicals that damage our body cells, including our skin and eye cells, and generally speed up the aging process. Studies also indicate that beta-carotene plays a significant role in reducing heart disease, some forms of cancer and the effects of skin damage due to excess sun exposure.

the effect of bright headlights or passing from full sun to shade. We can get Vitamin A directly from animals by eating liver and fish liver oils. Being fat-soluble it is stored in the liver so should not be eaten to excess, especially during pregnancy when liver is best avoided. Eggs and butter provide both beta-carotene and Vitamin A. Margarine may have betacarotene colouring added to it. Juicing carrots, then drinking immediately to prevent oxidation, is the best way to extract the most beta-carotene from the cellulose it is stored in and to benefit from the nutrients destroyed by cooking. Grating carrots will also help to break up the cellulose. Tests have shown that light steaming will extract more beta-carotene rather than eating raw, as will boiling them whole, then slicing just before eating or blending for carrot soup. Just remember the importance of moderation and variety. Beta-carotene will give your skin a healthy post-summer glow, but it may develop an orange tinge if you consume an excessive amount! This has happened to children drinking too much orange squash containing betacarotene colouring. It is quite harmless and soon fades, but it most certainly confirms the phrase ‘you are what you eat’!

Beta-carotene is converted in the liver to Vitamin A. It then travels to the eye where it is transformed into rhodopsin, a purple pigment, essential for night vision. A Vitamin A deficiency causes poor adaptation to changes in light levels, such as

What is LPG?

he Queen is a fan. So are Tony Blair and around 117,000 British motorists. The object of their admiration? Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), an environmentally friendly fuel. Her Majesty puts it in several cars in her fleet, while the prime minister has a couple of official vehicles that run on the ‘green’ gas. Petrol station owners love LPG too, because it’s more profitable than petrol and diesel, even though it’s sold at about half the price of either (thanks to its low fuel duty). That means motorists can share the joy by making savings of up to 40% when they fill up with LPG, according to the campaigning group Boost LPG (http://www. boostlpg.co.uk). LPG is a natural hydrocarbon fuel made up of propane and butane, and is an abundant by-product of the oil and gas industries. The burning of LPG produces less carbon dioxide than other fuels, meaning a smaller contribution to global warming. It also has the property of turning from gas to liquid at atmospheric temperature if moderately compressed, meaning it can be easily stored as a liquid and turned back into gas simply by relieving the pressure. And because it is 250 times denser as a liquid, a lot can be stored in a relatively small container. LPG has a lot of uses, including home heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning and the industrial manufacture of paper, textiles, glass and heavy ceramics. But it is in motoring where the gas is gaining most attention, with around 1,300 UK service stations currently offering LPG, which is sometimes known as Autogas.

8 88

Around 9million cars worldwide are run on LPG, about 117,000 of them being in the UK, where the Government supports LPG’s use by maintaining a low duty on the fuel and providing grants towards the conversion of some cars to run on LPG. For more information and to apply for a conversion grant, visit the Energy Saving Trust (http://www. est.org.uk). Most major m o t o r manufacturers – from Ford to Volvo - produce vehicles that run on LPG as well as standard fuel. Cars that are fuelled by petrol can be converted to run on LPG too for about £1,700. Converting diesel vehicles is more costly because more work has to be done on the engine to make it compatible for both fuels. About 200 companies in the UK are participants in the LPGA Approved Installer Scheme, which was set up in conjunction with the Department for Transport. Motorists often shy away from converting because they find it hard to locate someone to do the job, but a comprehensive list of approved installers can be found on the LP Gas Association’s website (http://www.lpga.co.uk). The advantages of LPG-powered cars are a more environmentally friendly ride that’s also quieter with little or no loss of engine efficiency. Vehicles that use the gas are entitled to an exemption from London’s Congestion Charge But there are disadvantages, too. A conversion will mean that some space in your car’s boot will be taken up by an LPG tank. Vehicles that run on the gas are currently not allowed through the Channel Tunnel, and only about 10% of British service stations presently offer the green fuel.

only completed pieces. In the unit I would demonstrate how to make the items it was at this time people were constantly asking me to teach them how to use the paste. I took a teaching certificate and started workshops. In August 1997, having tried and enjoyed Pergamano (parchment craft) I became a Registered Pergamano Tutor and began to hold workshops in card making. Around this time I introduced rubber stamps to my stock, with a natural progression to workshops using the stamps. Over the years I have taught and demonstrating a variety of crafts, in various locations, from small ladies groups to large events such as the Hobby and Craft show in Birmingham and craft events at Crystal Palace London. I continue to teach all three crafts in various locations throughout the Nottinghamshire area. Bridal arrangements are still a very important aspect of my work; it gives great satisfaction to make something so special, and so personal.

Riverbank Bar & Kitchen

F

or this months restaurant review we headed to the Riverbank Bar and Kitchen situated on Trent Bridge at the Embankment. Not the most local restaurant for this area I know, but when planning a trip to Nottingham for a night out, this restaurant ticks all the boxes for fine food and great entertainment. The location is ideal. It is close to Nottingham town centre while enjoying fabulous views of the riverside and the leafy embankment. It has recently been extensively converted into a stylish and modern 250-capacity bar and 110-seater eatery, with a separate Gallery function room and an in-house Deli. Outside boasts an extensive ultra-chic, all-weather terrace with wild-flame heaters and sunken wind-free enclaves to keep you snug and warm in winter and all of which is shaded from the sun and showers during our glorious English summers. On entering, you walk into a stylish and modern bar with its in house Deli. It is here that you can enjoy live music every night of the week. There is a house band on friday, saturday and sunday, piano on monday, the Kit Mason Trio on tuesday, and unplugged acoustic sessions Wednesday. Each night a cool classy musical treat. The food in here is straight from the Deli, offering fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and handcrafted bread in a tapas style, or fabulous deli sandwiches.

12

This evening we chose to eat in the restaurant. We sat in a quiet comfortable booth, with a lovely view of the lighted Trent Bridge. It was a wednesday night, and surprisingly busy. There is a lovely atmosphere, with cool jazz music in the background, and tasteful ambient lighting. The Menu is a delight, c r e a t e d by the head chef, Mark Osborne. Mark is a shareholder in t h e business, and his pedigree and passion is the driving force of the kitchen. For starters I chose the soup of the day, which was a very tasty watercress soup, we also tried the pressed terrine of confit duck, corn fed chicken and Foie Gras, with apple and celery salad, and also the Mushrooms on toast, with tarragon, cream, toasted sour dough bread, truffle oil and parmesan. All were nice size portions and very enjoyable.

e mail us at info@spotlightlocal.co.uk

The main course was a difficult choice, but eventually I decided on the pan fried salmon, with saffron potato, sweet peas, braised gem lettuce and poached cockles. The salmon was fabulous, and the cockles a nice treat. We also tried the pave of beef rump, cooked to perfection with potato terrine, curly kale, horseradish cream and spiced carrot puree. The final choice was the Riverbank Gourmet Burger, on a very large toasted focaccia bun with sweetcorn and chilli relish, Johnny Pusztai’s bacon and Coston Basset Stilton. Served with rocket salad and a pile of Beef Dripping fat chips. All extremely well presented, and all immensely enjoyed! Finally we had to sample the desserts, not because we wanted to of course but because somebody had to do it! We decided to share the prune and armagnac tart with ginger cake ice cream, and the dark chocolate mousse, with passionfruit and white chocolate crisp. A fabulous end to a wonderful meal. The whole experience was a delight. The staff were attentive and friendly, the wine list is very comprehensive. There are real ales on draught, deli products to take home, cool music and fabulous food.

happy hour with an itialian twist) where you can enjoy a relaxing cocktail after work with free s a m p l e s from the deli & discount presecco, peroni & cocktails. The Riverbank is the latest addition to a family-run business which opened its first ‘Trentside’ eatery in 1986 with the highly successful, award-winning Tom Browns Brasserie in Gunthorpe, followed by the very popular sister restaurant, The Farndon Boathouse, located just outside Newark in 2008. For more information take a look at their website: http://www.riverbanknotts.co.uk Many thanks to Adam and all the staff. We had a very enjoyable evening with fabulous food and music. Heartily recommended.

There is also a great value early bird menu; lunchtimes 12 - 2.30, and evenings 6 - 7pm, a 2 course meal is only £13.50, and 3 courses £16.50. From 5 – 7pm there is an Aperitivo, ( a kind of

Lifestyle and Leisure A Good Read

Smelly Bill’s Smelliest Stories– Daniel Postgate It can be difficult to choose books for newly confident readers: they are happy to say that they are ‘too big’ for picture books, but faced with a paperback novel they can feel out of their depth. So, this omnibus edition of Smelly Bill stories is perfect – shaped like an ordinary paperback, but with a generous balance of pictures and text, it is an ideal ‘halfway house’ choice. The book contains three Smelly Bill stories, each told in lively rhyme. The first introduces our hero, the scruffiest

and stinkiest dog in town, and his arch enemy, the determined Great Aunt Bleach, who battle over Bill’s bath. In the second story Bill calls on his friends (including Stagnant Stan and Putrid Pete) for support, only to find that an army of aunties await, clutching their bottles of shampoo and bars of soap. And, in the final instalment, Bill finds love with Peachy Snugglekins, forcing him to clean up his act, if only temporarily. Each story moves along at a rattling pace, keeping the reader’s interest, while slipping in a range of different vocabulary. Not only will young readers laugh a lot, they will also learn a range of new words as they go. And, given the charming nature of every tale, you won’t mind taking over if it gets too tricky.

Gardening

Bonfires

’m not a huge fan of the garden bonfire. I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. However, if wood is diseased for example, a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding bonfires? Surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though. These are laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council, or check their website for further information. Likewise, if you rent a property, check under your tenancy agreement to see whether bonfires are permitted. Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn plastics, or

painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly, bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. Warn your neighbours beforehand—and they’ll be less likely to complain. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance - on a warm sunny day people are more likely to be out in their garden, enjoying it.

Bonfire Safety Check-list Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side.

Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control.

Keep a bucket of water or a hose Check the bonfire for handy—just in case hibernating wildlife. Don’t leave the fire unattended.

22

Keep small children and pets out of the way. Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting. Only burn dry material. Damp material creates much more smoke.

Lifestyle & Leisure “What’s Happening?”

T

his message greets you when you open your Twitter account page. You’re then meant to tell the world “what’s happening” in your life by typing a short, snappy message, or ‘tweet’, of up to 140 characters. Unless you have been living on a desert island for the past couple of years, the phenomenon of Twitter will be familiar to you, whether you use it or not. Twitter was invented in 2006 as an online alternative to the text messaging service on mobile phones. It took off in 2009 after Stephen Fry started talking about Twitter being the next big thing. It seems he was right. There are many other ways to stay in touch, but for businesses, large or small, Twitter is the new marketing tool. It reaches places other tools can’t reach. It’s a vital promotional medium in the digital age. As Twitter itself states, “One of Twitter’s key benefits is that it gives you the chance to communicate casually with customers on their terms, creating friendly relationships along the way - tough for corporations to do in most other mediums”. How should you use Twitter to its best advantage? Download a program to

help you to manage Twitter. TweetDeck, Seesmic and HootSuite are highly recommended. Twitter makes much more sense when you use one of these desktop applications rather than the basic page on Twitter.com. They help organise your messages and contacts. You can also create and use a number of accounts so you can choose which ‘persona’ to tweet from using one of these applications. Twitter is easy to use on your mobile phone. Any mobile that can send text messages can be used to tweet. You simply send a text message using a special phone number. The iPhone and the Blackberry have their own applications for using Twitter. Other phones that can access the internet have numerous recommended applications available, such as SnapTu and Seesmic. New free, downloadable applications are being developed every day; this industry is moving extremely fast. You need to watch your usage time and what your phone contract offers though. Text messages often cost money although Twitter is free. Each mobile phone company offers different deals, so do your homework first. For further information about using Twitter on your phone visit the Twitter website. To make best use of Twitter you have to interact and put yourself out there. Follow the right people, jump in, engage, promote others and have fun. Use Twitter as you would network in a room full of people. You don’t turn up at a networking event, talk to yourself and wait for people to listen do you? So jump in and start tweeting. Suki North
