Asbestos: the time bomb Asbestos, a once valued friend, is now a feared foe and the time bomb is ticking for those exposed to asbestos even as long as 50 years ago. Whilst intact, asbestos cement locks in harmful fibres but it is when it is disturbed that the danger arises. Microscopic fibres become airborne and can be breathed into the lungs where they become lodged. There, the fibres may lie unnoticed for many years before any disease develops. It can take between 20 and 50 years or more for this silent, hidden time bomb to explode. The diseases it can cause include mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening – and the
number of people diagnosed with asbestos illnesses is expected to peak over the next decade. For many years, asbestos use was not regulated and, even when the dangers became known, employers were not all quick to provide employees with adequate protection and warnings of the risks it posed. Even innocent family members have been affected by asbestos dust being shaken from their relatives’ clothing on their return home from work. At Dedicated Asbestos Solicitors, we have represented asbestos sufferers and their families and recovered compensation for the failure of former employers to properly guard against the risks of asbestos exposure. Successful claims have been brought even though the exposure to asbestos was many years ago and the former employer is no longer in existence. We do this by locating the insurers of the former employer and seeking payment from them. If a relative has died due to asbestos exposure, a claim for compensation may be brought on behalf of their estate for their illness and losses incurred before death.
In addition, there may be a claim for compensation for the bereavement and the financial losses sustained by any dependants left behind. If you think that you might have an asbestos claim, it is important to contact specialist asbestos solicitors. At Dedicated Asbestos Solicitors, we are accredited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers as experts in this field. No win-no fee arrangements are available so that you can relax in the knowledge that you will not have to pay towards our high quality legal service and that you will receive your compensation payment in full, without any deductions of any type. A
s we progress through the year our thoughts are drawn to spring. The days are gradually getting longer, though it’s hardly noticeable because the temperatures are still very cold. People think of February as ‘nearly spring’ but in fact it can be a much colder month than December or January at times.
If you are inspired by these wonderful scenes, now is the perfect time to buy and plant snowdrops, so why not add some to a tub, or plant a swathe by the front door? That way even when it’s icy outside you’ll be welcoming guests with a less frosty reception.
That said, the cold weather is just the stimulus some bulbs need in order for them to burst into bloom. Take the snowdrop for example: this tiny flower with its delicate head looks its best this month, especially when planted in large drifts. Galanthus (snowdrops) naturalise and spread quite rapidly when happy, and over 5-10 years will form the most beautiful carpet of white.
Cutting down – I’m not talking about the post Christmas calorie intake, but about the herbaceous perennials. Chop them down now, as far as you can go so that the new shoots will be free to grow next month.
Try and visit an open garden this month and you’ll see what I mean. Choose a clear day when the sky is an intense blue. Take a waterproof rug to lie down on and see the world from the woodland floor, just like a snowdrop would. It’s a beautiful place to be (and to take photographs from). If it’s not frozen solid, the earthy smell of the humus rich soil is wonderful and there will often be a layer of crunchy leaves still remaining from autumn, partially decomposed which add to the aroma. When you get up close and personal with plants in this way it really gives you a chance to appreciate their beauty. Lift up the little nodding head and see the loveliness within.
10
Other jobs to do this month include:
Hedge your bets – overgrown evergreen hedges can be cut at the end of the month. Do one side this year and one in a couple of years time. It will look pretty awful until it re grows (in about 2 years) but it will be worth the wait. Compost all the waste you create in the garden, but remember to chop it up well. Consider investing in a shredder if you create a lot of bulky waste. You’ll be impressed with the quality of compost you can produce. Use last year’s compost to lay on the top of the soil around shrubs and roses (known as mulch) Until next time, Happy gardening, Lee

Style Solutions for Bay/Bow Windows Part 2 Blinds Instead of taking curtains inside your bay window, why not choose blinds to be used for privacy and then dress curtains to add interest and warmth to the room as shown in the top picture. Here we have used wooden venetian blinds to give an element of privacy during the day which can then be fully tilted in the evening. The curtains add colour and pattern picking up on the red feature wall. This look also can be achieved with vertical blinds either in a neutral shade or for added vibrancy choose red or a more subtle beige. Roman Blinds always look fantastic in bay windows and there are a huge range of colours and patterns to choose from. Many fabrics have a range of designs in each colour way which makes it easy to
mix and match as we have done in the lower picture combining striped blinds with flowered panels. Static panels are a really economical way of dressing the outside of the window. They only use around 2.5m of fabric and can be attached by Velcro or slotted onto a curtain pole. If your budget doesn`t run to Roman Blinds, why not consider Roller Blinds? The choice of fabrics and designs has really expanded in recent years and as they are less labour intensive to make, this is reflected in the price. If you would like any help or advice, why not pop into our dedicated blinds showroom on Oxford Street in Mansfield?

Health & Beauty
Paraffin Wax Manicure and Pedicure What a luxurious addition to a manicure or pedicure, but you may be surprised at what else paraffin wax is used to treat..... Paraffin wax is a common option in heat therapy treatments for people with arthritis or other rheumatic diseases -- the heat helps increase blood flow and relax the muscles, which can help relieve discomfort caused by arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Paraffin wax can even soften hardened skin caused by scleroderma, a disease in which collagen accumulates on the body. It also increases the skin’s elasticity, allowing for increased movement and mobility, especially on the skin covering the hands/feet. But the benefits of paraffin wax don’t stop there. Because paraffin wax treatments
are a form of heat therapy, they’re often used for muscle, tendon and ligament ailments. As with conditions like arthritis, they increase blood flow, improve joint stiffness and reduce pain. They’re also used to treat tendonitis, sprains and pulled muscles. The heat opens your pores, which allows the lubricants in the paraffin wax and moisturizing creams to soften your skin. The heat from the paraffin wax will also allow for better circulation in your hands. If you have dry or cracked hands, then a paraffin wax manicure would be a great choice for you. A paraffin wax manicure is also great for enhancing and maintaining nail health. Sometimes it is really easy to neglect the nail plate and cuticle but with the addition of paraffin wax the benefits are endless.

Cashew Chicken Celebrate Chinese New Year in style with this tasty dish.
Ingredients For the chicken
2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tsp whole yellow bean sauce 2 tbsp shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 5 tbsp chicken stock or water Method
450g boneless chicken breasts, skinned 1 egg white 1 tsp salt 2 tsp corn flour 310ml groundnut (or peanut) oil or water 2 tsp groundnut (or peanut) oil 55g cashew nuts 1 tbsp shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp spring onions, finely chopped, for garnish For the vegetables 225g bean sprouts 1 red pepper 1 green pepper Red or green chilli 225g water chestnuts, peeled if fresh, rinsed if canned 2 tbsp groundnut oil 1½ tbsp garlic, finely chopped 2 tsp fresh ginger, finely chopped 6 spring onions, shredded 1 tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground white pepper
Cut the chicken into 1cm cubes. Mix with the egg white, salt and corn flour in a small bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Heat a wok or large frying pan until very hot. Add the oil and when it is very hot and slightly smoking remove the wok from the heat. Immediately add the chicken, stirring vigorously to prevent it from sticking. The chicken will turn white after a couple of minutes. Drain off the excess oil and reserve the chicken on a plate Wipe the wok or pan clean with kitchen roll. Heat it until it is very hot, add 2 tbsp oil and the cashew nuts and stir-fry them for 1 minute. Add the rest of the ingredients. Return the chicken to the wok and stir-fry the mixture for another 2 minutes. Reserve the chicken to a plate again. Make the vegetables: trim the bean sprouts at both ends. Chop the peppers into bitsize pieces and finely shred the chillies and the water chestnuts. Heat a wok or large frying pan until it is very hot. Add the oil and when it is very hot and slightly smoking, add the garlic, ginger and spring onions and stir fry for 15 seconds. Then add the bean sprouts, shredded chilli, peppers and shredded water chestnuts and stir fry for about 1 minute. Then add the rest of the ingredients and stirfry for about 3 minutes until it is well mixed and heated through. Return the chicken to the pan for a final stir. Serve at once with some steamed rice, garnished with spring onions.

Diveable
iveable is a registered charity based in Nottingham. It all started when diver, businessman, and Round Table / Rotary member Darren Brookes met Miles Hilton-Barber, the blind explorer. They spoke about scuba diving and Miles said he was determined to try it. Darren involved a diving instructor, who trained Miles as well as Mike McKenzie and Caroline Casey of the Around the world in eighty ways project which was a world wide event to highlight the possibilities for persons who are physically challenged. Dive-able was registered as a charity in 2006 to continue to offer persons with disabilities the experience of the underwater world.Darren Brookes has recently qualified as an instructor purposely to carry on the good work of the charity after a period of inactivity due to funding . Trustee Darren quotes “ It’s great I can offer this to persons who wouldn’t normally consider scuba, before we were beholding outside training agencies. The importance of such an activity cannot be measured, as disabilities disappear under water and all become equal. Weightlessness, non contact with wheelchairs and the sense of achievement all add to the therapeutic benefits of scuba diving with a disability. Miles’ Story Miles says about his dive in the Red Sea: “Before I had never felt comfortable in the water. But now I just found it an amazing experience, where my equipment became like an extension of my body. I felt at home underwater, almost like I belonged there with the fishes”. “As soon as we got down I became aware of a light tinkling sound all around – parrot fish chewing the coral and all different forms of sea life crawling around on the reef.”
Mike’s Story Mike has no legs and no feeling below his chest level, so for him diving was always going to be a bit different. He says: “Basically I had to use my arms where other people use their legs. It’s really hard on the arms, but I got a pair of webbed gloves, which acted like fins and gave me more propulsion.” Another problem for Mike was that without the use of his legs his position in the water is vertical and not horizontal as usual: “We worked out a weighting combination to get my chest down and my lower end up.” Mike started with an open water dive after pool sessions. He says: “Being thrown off the back of a boat for the first time was perhaps a little worrying. But once I hit the water and bobbed up to the surface, I felt totally at home.” Caroline’s Story Ten years ago, Caroline was told she would never be allowed to dive because she failed an eye test and is registered blind. But now, Caroline has her diving ticket: “It’s a dream come true.” Caroline says about the Red Sea night dive: “It was exhilarating to be down there like a fish, swimming, breathing and moving silently. It is an almost spiritual experience. You just float, your mind shuts off and your are completely taken with the sea world.” Miles, Mike and Caroline say diving is “the best thing in the world”. That’s why since that trip to the Red Sea, Diveable has continued taking disabled people diving. Dive-able are looking to raise funds for equipment , pool hire time , and a compressor, and If you wish to be involved either as a volunteer or come along and try it for yourself contact Darren on 0777 2277222. If you are a retired diver who can donate equipment it would be very much appreciated.
“I held on lightly to Darren’s wrist – he was my buddy. It gave me a sense of spatial awareness, telling me what direction we are going in. I also had a little computer that told me things like depth and whether it was time for a safety stop.” “I’m sold on scuba diving. I recommend it to everyone – give it a go, chances are you can probably do it too.” www.spotlightlocal.co.uk • 01623 706570 • info@spotlightlocal.co.uk 22

Safer Internet Day
he tenth annual Safer Internet Day takes place on 5th February, and is designed to help everyone use the internet and other new technologies safely and responsibly. Passwords are the first line of defence against cyber criminals. Long passwords that use numbers, symbols and mixed-case letters, are the most secure. Use different passwords for each of your important accounts and change them regularly. Malware is a type of computer programme that can be installed on your machine without your knowledge. It can be used to try to access your personal information, or to force your computer to visit websites, send spam email, or perform other actions without your knowledge. To protect against malware, install at least one good quality anti-virus product and scan regularly. You should also upgrade your operating system and software to the latest versions and, if possible, turn on automatic updates. Be careful about what you click and download. If you’re not sure about an unfamiliar site, leave it and research the software before installing it. If malware prevents you from leaving the page, for example by repeatedly opening a download prompt, use your computer’s task manager to close your browser – generally accessed by pressing ‘ctrl’, ‘alt’ and ‘delete’ at the same time . Do not trust anything within an email that looks suspicious – even if it’s from people you know – and visit websites by entering

the address directly in your browser instead of using links in emails. Do not trust pop-up windows that ask you to download software to make your computer safe because it has been infected. Close the window and don’t click inside it. There are tools and controls available to help you manage your online experience. Google SafeSearch excludes sites with sexually explicit content from search results, and Safety Mode on YouTube means that videos with mature or age-restricted content will not show up in searches. Take an interest in your child’s internet activity and talk to them about their experience. Better still, spend time with them working online so that you know how they are using the internet. Children need to know that the internet can be a dangerous place and that not everyone online can be trusted. They should not share personal information like their name, age, school, phone number, email address or photos and should always use a nickname as their screen name. To register on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, they should be at least 13. If your child wants to meet someone they have met online, make them aware of the potential dangers, encourage them always to inform you of their plans and insist that you go along too, especially for the first meeting. With these systems and procedures in place, using the internet should be a safer experience for us all! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Spotlight Magazine be short of money in the following year. People also bring plants and fruit trees into their homes, especially kumquat plants and peach blossom. On New Year’s Eve, families gather together for a celebratory feast. They eat sticky rice dumplings to bring good luck and happiness. It is a time to be thankful for the year that is ending and to remember family members who have died. At midnight, the doors and windows of the house are opened to let the old year out and firecrackers are set off.
Gung Hei Fat Choi Celebrate the Chinese New Year on 10 February 2013 Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration of the year for Chinese people around the world. In China, the festival is marked by a three-day public holiday. Also called the Spring Festival, it is a special time for families to get together, and millions of people travel home from their places of work or study. Chinese people prepare for the New Year celebrations by cleaning their houses from top to bottom. The idea is to clear away any bad luck and make way for good luck in the year ahead. People also buy new clothes and have their hair cut. They decorate their homes with red and gold paper decorations and lights. Red is a lucky colour in China, while gold represents wealth. Debts must be paid off before the end of the year, otherwise it is said that you will

The next day, friends and families exchange gifts of food, flowers and sweets. Children are given money in red paper envelopes. There are fireworks and elaborate lion and dragon dances featuring beautifully coloured costumes and puppets. People try to forget grudges and wish peace and happiness to everyone. The date of the New Year is calculated using the lunar calendar and can fall any time between late January and the middle of February. A complete cycle of the lunar calendar lasts 60 years and consists of five cycles of 12 years. Each of the 12 years is named after a different animal – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Legend has it that Buddha asked all the animals on earth to join him for a party. Only 12 turned up, and as a reward, he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. Each animal has certain characteristics which people born in that year are said to share. 2013 will be the Year of the Snake. People born in this year are said to be romantic, wise and charming. They are good at making and saving money, but can be stingy. Famous snakes include Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan and Brad Pitt! By Alex Brown

I have a little Satnav.......... It sits there in my car. A Satnav is a driver’s friend, It tells you where you are.
It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene.
I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life. It isn’t like the normal ones My Satnav is my wife.
It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear, And taking this into account It specifies my gear.
It gives me full instructions, Especially how to drive “It’s thirty miles an hour”, it says, “You’re doing thirty five.” It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake, And tells me that it’s never ever Safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green -
I’m sure no other driver Has so helpful a device, For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice! It fills me up with soundbites Each journey’s pretty fraught, So why don’t I exchange it And get a quieter sort?
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I’m properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these great pluses And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that now and again I could turn the damned thing off!

Food & Drink
T
The Food of Love hey say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so why not experiment with some tempting titbits this Valentine’s Day?
In Japan feeling flirty can become – quite literally – a matter of life or death! Puffer fish is considered to be a great delicacy and an aphrodisiac, but it contains a poisonous gland that is deadly and must be removed before eating! A safer seafood option is the oyster. A favourite with the Romans some oysters are able to change sex repeatedly and so are said to give you the ability to experience the male and female sides of love.
For a sophisticated saucy snack you can’t go wrong with asparagus. Served with hollandaise sauce and washed down with champagne it’s sure to pep things up. And do you know where the term ‘honeymoon’ comes from? In Medieval times newlyweds drank mead – a fermented drink made with honey – to sweeten their marriage. But I reckon the ultimate palate pleaser has got to be chocolate. Described by the Aztecs as ‘nourishment of the Gods’, it contains both a relaxing sedative that lowers inhibitions and a stimulant to perk you up. Even better is the news that it is more effective when combined with that other antioxidant, red wine – but don’t have too much, or your suitor may become a snorer! By Alex Brown
