A hair free summer!

ith summer on its way most of us start to think about holidays and for most women that means the nightmarish decision; how do I get rid of unwanted body and facial hair? We’ve all seen pictures in the glossy magazines of beautiful tanned women with silky, smooth, hair free legs and most of us have probably yearned for that look but have no idea how to achieve it. Shaving, waxing or hair removal creams are not a long term remedy for removing hair, especially if the hairs are dark and course. A lot of women have to use these methods regularly which can result in irritation and is generally a tedious process, but fear not, there are alternatives.

35 years, there is now a solution for removing most unwanted hair that is virtually pain free and has very little or no reaction. ELLIPSE INTENSE PULSED LIGHT is a fast effective and safe way of reducing dark hair. How does it work? The visible light from a flash lamp is guided via a glass prism to the treated area. The hairs contain pigment (Melanin) that absorbs the light and converts it into heat. The heat is led through the hair into the follicle which is then destroyed and rendered unable to produce a new hair.

Electrolysis is a permanent method of hair removal and is most effective on smaller areas such as the face. However, for larger areas such as the arms and legs it is a lengthy and expensive process.

This treatment for body hair removal is recommended every six weeks and it is advisable to have a consultation and a patch test with a reputable beauty salon or clinic, as the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the stage of the hair growth cycle. Unfortunately, fair, white or grey hairs cannot be treated by this method. Salons should be registered with the Quality Care Commission.

MANSFIELD ELECTROLYSIS AND LASER CLINIC on Market street has been trading for

Here’s to a happy hair free summer and many more in the years to come.

Pop Art

his month Cuadros Contemporary Art Gallery in Notthingham celebrates the genre of Pop Art that focuses heavily on film, comics, animation, television personality, paparazzo, and publishing impresario. Highlights include a number of extraordinary humorous pieces by Pop Art phenomena Hans James. There will be weird and wonderful procreations from our very own Nottingham hero Jon Burgerman. James Youngerman, an experienced Pop Art Portraitist from Manchester, adds a touch of class and last but not least we are proud to represent the works of London based Paul Melia. The only artist to be commissioned by Marvel and Disney to re-create characters for the silver screen! Pop Art has made a huge impact in the world of art since its conception in America and in

Britain in the 1950’s. Since its introduction, many great artists have paved the way for future generations of artists who dabbled in this genre of art. There are several Pop Art pieces that are instantly recognised by art lovers around the world. These include ‘Glag’ by Jasper Johns, ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ by Andy Warhol and the ‘Bigger Splash’ by David Hockney. These artists and their works of art are what turned Pop Art into a worldwide phenomenon! The exhibition runs from Saturday 8th to the 22nd May 2010. At The Movies Some of the movies showing at the Mansfield Odeon this month. Robin Hood Think you know the story of Robin Hood? Think again. Director Ridley Scott brings us the story behind the legend, and the man behind the outlaw. Russell Crowe stars as the expert archer who returns from the crusades to Nottingham and falls for Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett). In a bid to win her favour, he assembles a gang of lethal mercenaries to wage a guerrilla war against the corrupt sheriff. With epic battle scenes ‘Robin Hood’ brings the legend to life - as the people’s warrior protects the country from civil war and returns England to glory.

press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts and James “Rhodey” Rhodes at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who hunts them in their dreams. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another, but when they sleep, there is no escape.

Food and Drink Broad Bean Soup The fresh taste and gorgeous colour make this a perfect soup for spring Ingredients 50g (2oz) butter 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 900g (2lb) fresh shelled broad beans (or frozen broad beans) 1 tbsp caster sugar 1 litre (2 pints) chicken stock 150ml (1/4 pint) dry white wine or dry sherry 3-4 sage leaves or few sprigs of basil (depending on your taste) Method Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onions, broad beans and the sugar. Cover and cook gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are soft and slightly golden (not browned).

Add the stock, herbs of choice, wine or sherry. Simmer for 30-40 minutes until the beans are really tender. Cool slightly and blend to your preferred consistency. For a beautiful smooth finish push the already blended soup through a sieve. Return the soup to the pan and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Must-have items for outdoor living

hen the sun breaks through and we get told that we’re about to experience a heatwave (for a couple of days at least) the whole world descends on the local DIY centre to grab all the outdoor ephemera to make it possible to live comfortably in the garden for the foreseeable future. Be prepared in advance and avoid the scrum in the garden aisle. All gardens need a barbecue. Even vegetarians can enjoy fabulous food cooked outdoors and there’s nothing like the aroma of a crackling barbecue to make you feel like it’s really summer. Invest in a Weber kettle barbecue to ensure long life and easy cleaning as well as perfectly cooked sausages every time. Outdoor furniture has come a long, long way from those horrid white plastic moulded chairs and tables of years gone by. Now canvas director chairs, beach striped umbrellas and elaborate cast iron bistro tables are affordable for every garden. Pick something classic in design and well made and it could last you for years to come. Ensure that you regularly clean all surfaces and keep textiles covered and wood sanded back and re-varnished. As well as chairs and tables, comfortable floor cushions or even hammocks make garden living a little more comfortable and exciting. Throwing brightly coloured rugs and cushions over the lawn before a party can make a garden look lovely with minimal effort while a hammock or hanging chair can be the idyllic place to read a magazine and enjoy an ice cold drink. Outdoor lighting is all too easily forgotten until you find yourself squinting across the table at your friends as the sun finally goes down. Choose solar lights which can be easily set in to beds or paths or twinkling fairy lights strung through trees, gazebos or pergolas. Flare-type candles also cast lots of light while giving a romantic feel, as do pierced metal lanterns holding tea lights,

20

which look particularly effective queued up on garden steps. For daytime use invest in a good quality paddling pool for the kids – another thing which you’ll regret not buying before when the sun comes out. Even the smallest inflatable pool can keep kids entertained for days while larger, deeper pools are irresistible for adults. You might also consider the addition of wasp traps – the best are prettily coloured narrow necked glass affairs that not only look lovely hanging in gardens but effectively keep stingers at bay so you can enjoy a shandy in peace. Additionally, if you intend to do plenty of outdoor entertaining be sure to have all the accessories to hand to help you easily cook and serve outside – good barbecue utensils, a large, sturdy tray and perhaps even drink and cutlery baskets. Wine coolers are also a must to avoid letting your bottle of wine go horribly warm in the sun. Finally, to keep your garden watered and kids hosed down and cool invest in a good sprinkler or hose with an adjustable ‘gun’ – these are invaluable, so long as we avoid a hosepipe ban, to keep the garden looking good.

Spring clean your outdoor room

A

s the signs of spring begin to make their mark on the natural landscape, many of us will take this as a definite cue to embark upon a frenzied period of cleaning, tidying and re-organizing within the home. And as the temperatures rise and we anticipate spending more time in the outdoor room, it makes perfect sense to extend our ‘spring clean’ strategy to the home’s outside living accommodation. Once all the traditional tidy up jobs, (such as hedge trimming, patio & pathway cleaning, furniture restoration, lawn care etc) are completed, the fun can really start! With a neat and tidy garden as your starting point, now’s the time to sit back and think about ways in which to inject some instant refreshment into your outside space. Accent colour Identify an accent colour for your garden and look at clever ways to employ this colour to help accessorise the space. A cheap and cheerful solution is to invest in some colourful pots, then match up and repeat the same tones elsewhere in the garden, for example by adding the same splash of colour to an exterior fence or wall. Plants boasting foliage / flowers in your chosen accent colour or a selection of cosy cushions can also be used to create cost effective accessories. Shape up Something as simple as changing the shape of your lawn or plant borders can help transform the overall look of your outdoor space. The move from formal straight lines and ordered shapes to more fluid, curved contours (and vice versa) can have a dramatic effect on the overall feel of the garden.

22

Light sensation Make the most of the longer summer evenings by introducing some mood enhancing lighting into the garden. Delicate tea lights or bold garden (oil) torches / oil candles hung from tree boughs, can add a mesmeric and enchanting dimension. Arch antics Look at installing a simple, rustic timber arch to generate instant change within your outdoor room. Enhance the arch with a gorgeous, fragrant freeflowering climber and you can either draw attention to a stunning view or focal point beyond the arch, or simply use to create a transition point between two areas of the garden. Architecture focus Just as a stunning new piece of furniture can become the focal point of a room inside the house, so too can a well thought out piece of garden architecture create a big difference in the space outside the home. Look out for striking sundials, beautifully crafted bird baths or eye catching water features to introduce that all important ‘wow’ factor. Keep it hot, hot, hot Nothing quite beats a brazier or fire pit in terms of injecting instant drama into the outdoor living environment. Providing a source of atmospheric heat and light, a brazier / fire pit can double up as a means to cook simple food and will extend the entertainment value of your garden space. If you’re interested in getting more from your garden this summer and are looking for ways in which to refresh your outdoor space, contact Lime Orchard on 0845 5391467 or visit www.limeorchard.co.uk for further details of the company’s garden transformation service.
