Beat Computer Stress

f you spend a large amount of your work time on a computer, chances are you are doing yourself some harm. Maybe you haven’t got any obvious physical symptoms like a sore back, tense neck and shoulders or numbness and tingling in your hands but, at the very least, the time you spend at the computer is likely to be adding considerably to your stress levels. And studies are showing that this extra work-related stress can be surprisingly harmful in the long term. The good news is that there are a number of easy steps you can take to counteract these problems. I’ve compiled four tips which I believe can significantly reduce the risk of injury. Last month we looked at the benefits of taking frequent breaks while working at your computer. Tip number 2 is contained in this article.

Tip 2 - Stretch-It-Out!

Next to taking frequent short breaks the best thing most computer operators can do to protect themselves from the physical demands of spending many hours at their keyboards is stretch. It really is “the perfect antidote for long periods of inactivity and holding still” which is just what happens when you sit at your computer for hours on end. The best thing about stretching is that you can do it anywhere. You don’t need to go to the gym, you don’t need to change your clothes. Stretching can be done at work, at your desk or on the phone, even while you are in a meeting! Done properly, it is a gentle, pleasurable activity.

6

And the best news of all is that the perfect stretching resource is available on your computer! Just get online and go to www.stretchware.com. There, you will find downloadable stretching software that tells you everything you need to know about how to stretch to relieve the physical demands of excessive keyboard work. This package can be set up to your own specifications. A nice feature is the reminder function which can be programmed to tell you it’s time to take a break from your computer work at whatever intervals you decide. The package then takes you through stretching routines which you can self-select depending on how much time you’ve got and what parts of your body you need to stretch. If you don’t want to do any stretching, then just use the opportunity to take a quick break. As the author, Bob Anderson, says, “The machine that causes the problem now contains the solution!” I cannot commend this stretching resource too highly. (And no, I don’t get a commission). If you don’t want the software, you can get the same material in book form from the same website. I recommend “Stretching in the Office”. Abbey Drives

bbey Drives has been trading for 17 years. We are a family-based businesswhich covers all of the East Midlands. We are a market leader in our field of printed concrete driveways. One of our key goals for the next 12 months is to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. We aim to do this through a range of measures, such as training all our drivers responsible driving techniques. By recycling as much of our waste product as possible therefore minimising landfill eg. Concrete taken from existing drives goes through a recycling process where it is crushed and reused. Soil is also screened and re-used as topsoil and we even recycle old cast manhole covers. Wherever possible we buy greener products. We used to use drainage channels made of a resin composite material. We’ve already switched to using drainage channels made from recycled plastic. All our manholes are now sourced from recycled materials. Even down to the plastic we cover the roads with to keep the site clean and tidy is recycled plastic.

By far the biggest benefit we have gained is by using a product called Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA). This is a waste product from power stations which would normally go into landfill but has been widely used in the construction industry for many years as a substitute for cement. Portland Cement manufacture is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the construction industry, responsible for about 5% of all global carbon dioxide emissions. By using PFA we are able to reduce our need for landfill, reduce the amount of cement in our concrete by 30-60%, and cut our concrete produced carbon emissions by 30-60% By taking these environmentally friendly measures we aim to further enhance our reputation and maintain our market leader position in the pattern imprinted concrete industry.

Motoring

T

Cut Your Costs

he cost of motoring is something we can all relate to; from road tax to servicing, fuel to insurance. There are however several ways we can all modify our driving style to reduce the money we spend, whilst reducing emissions and pollution. These eco-driving tips are the motoring equivalent of fitting loft insulation, using low energy light bulbs and not leaving the tv on standby – simple, common sense tips that really will make a difference. A study carried out by the AA in conjunction with AutoExpress Magazine found that by applying the following advice, an average saving of 10% was achieved on their weekly fuel bill! Maintenance Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s servicing schedule and regularly maintain your vehicle, a poorly tuned engine could be using up to 50% more fuel! Check your tyre pressures regularly and before long journeys. Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance and so use more fuel. Getting tyre pressures right is important for safety too. Refer to the handbook as pressures will normally have to be increased for heavier loads. Changing your tyres to those with less ‘rolling resistance’ will also help to increase your MPG, with the added bonus of often being quieter too! Before you go Carrying unnecessary weight means you use extra fuel so if there’s stuff in the boot you don’t need on the journey take it out and leave it at home. Roof racks/boxes create extra wind resistance and so increase fuel consumption. Plan unfamiliar journeys to reduce the chance of getting lost – use online route planners or consider a ‘Sat Nav’. An estimated 350,000 tonnes of fuel is wasted every year by drivers who are lost! Cold starts are inefficient so it pays to combine errands such as buying the paper, dropping-off the recycling, or collecting the kids into one trip rather than making multiple short trips.

10 12

If it’s a short journey (a couple of miles or so) consider walking or cycling rather than taking the car – fuel consumption is worse when the engine’s cold and pollution will be greater too until the emissions control system gets up to normal temperature. On the Way Drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking. When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear. If you can keep the car moving all the time, so much the better. Stopping then starting again uses more fuel than keeping rolling. Change gear as soon as possible without laboring the engine – try changing up at an engine speed of around 2000 rpm in a diesel car or around 2500 rpm in a petrol car. This can make such a difference to fuel consumption that all cars in the future are likely to be fitted with Gear Shift indicators that light a lamp on the dashboard to indicate the most efficient gear change points. Drive at or within the speed limit – the faster you go the greater the fuel consumption and the greater the pollution too. According to the Department for Transport driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph. Cruising at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph. Coasting - rolling downhill or approaching a junction with the car out of gear - is inadvisable because the driver doesn’t have full control of the vehicle, though it used to be quite a common practice to save fuel. A modern cars electronic engine management cuts the fuel supply to the injectors when you release the accelerator so there’s nothing to be gained by coasting. How much can you save? The aim is to see how much you can improve on your current average fuel consumption or the ‘official’, manufacturer’s figure by following the advice above. So go on, give ‘eco-driving’ a go and change the way you use your car. You will be helping to conserve the environment and your bank balance!

Get your money working harder for you

oney doesn’t grow on trees and especially in this current environment of austerity we need to look after the money we have well. This may be your savings in Cash ISA’s, your Pension monies, Stocks and Shares ISA’s or your Investment Bonds. The problem is that we invariably don’t look after our money too well, we forget about it and think that it is going to be ok where it is. However that isn’t usually the case, the Cash ISA introductory interest rate offer that was good when you first put your money in has dropped to 0.5%, the Adviser that you used at the Bank has not been in touch to review your Stocks and Shares ISA and Investment Bond because he took all the commission at the start of the contract so now there is no financial motivation to continue to look after you. And don’t mention your pension monies because you have just paid into the same one all your life even though the policy

14

is actually quite expensive and the fund that you invest in has been performing poorly for a long time (although you don’t know that). So what should you do? Get all your paperwork out and contact an Independent Financial Adviser. Shop around and find someone that you feel comfortable discussing your finances with. Find out what his qualifications are. Ask how he is remunerated, by fees or commission? Make sure that they do not charge a large amount initially without any ongoing fee as it is a good indicator that they will not be back next year to see how the things are getting on. Alternatively contact me Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions by telephone 07817 618823 or by e-mail justin@ itmakessense.net because I am passionate about clients finances and I will help you plan for your future.

Pain free permanent hair reduction

ust think about it- in the summer, how many times a week do you shave your legs and armpits trying to get that smooth stubble free feeling?

How many hours do you take out of your day to meet those waxing appointments and you’re still not used to the feeling of having your hair ripped out? Well fancy making a commitment to yourself and becoming one of the thousands of satisfied people who have laser hair removal? Utilising the most advanced American technology, the SOPRANO from ABC lasers is the most effective, pain free laser hair removal treatment available on the market. While some lasers boast fast treatments and ‘minimal’ pain, everybody in the beauty industry knows that the Soprano is the only laser which really can give you soft, smooth skin in 3-5 pain free sessions. It’s no contest really; 4+ painful laser sessions which leave you stinging for a few days or a maximum of 5 painless sessions to rid you of shaving rash, in grown hairs and stubble for good. Imagine the relief of not ever having the hassle to shave, wax or use hair removal

16

cream again- EVER! During the laser hair removal treatment, light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This absorption raises the temperature of the hair follicle and thermally destroys the cells responsible for regrowth- meaning a permanent solution to epilation. What’s more, unlike most laser and IPL therapies, the Soprano is suited to all skin types and hair colours meaning safe and effective hair removal for those with particularly coarse hair. With a unique DualChill tip, the Soprano laser makes this the most comfortable laser treatment available and the results speak for themselves. And with 800 outlets including high end stockists such Harrods, you can be rest assured that this isn’t any ordinary laser hair removal treatment! Whether it’s your armpits, legs, arms or bikini area, don’t you think it’s time you invested a little in the beauty of flawless, hair free skin? De-Clutter

I

Living with less and getting organised

f you can’t lay your hands on items quickly because they’re buried under piles of stuff; if you’re constantly moving things from one pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter victim. Live a life of simplicity with the items you love most and use often. Most of us put far too much time, effort and money into acquiring, keeping and storing possessions. Sometimes it’s good to let go. If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. If you feel you need help, and many of us often do, there are experts in de-cluttering who will guide you through the process of letting go. De-cluttering Tips Ideally it helps if it’s a nice day and in some cases a total de-clutter means taking the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the clutter will make it back inside. Deal with one room at a time the task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished

A rule of thumb; If you don’t love it or need it consider throwing it. Sort everything into three piles Love it, Donate it and Throw it. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it. Deal with donate and throw piles first. Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone. The remaining items can now be sorted, labelled and placed using clearly labelled boxes, is part of this processes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues. Replace everything that remains, Rule of Thumb: ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. House small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes. Now you’re done. Going forward think . As one thing comes into the house another thing goes out. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else has to go. Finally, once a month, take a couple of bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items. Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life. You’ll feel much better for it.

Hanging Basket Know-How

ave you ever gazed in admiration at a neighbour’s glorious hanging basket and wondered why yours doesn’t measure up? Hanging baskets can be things of abundant beauty, but often they are too sparsely planted or worse, look like abandoned birds nests. If you want to be the object of basket-envy this year, you need to take on board a few trade secrets. The most important thing to note, if you’re new to basketplanting, is that size really does matter. For a good basket you’ll need the minimum of a 35cm / 14 inch size wire frame type. This will have a depth of 15cm / 6 inches which allows for lots of compost and means that the basket won’t dry out quickly. You can also plant through the sides to give that really luxuriant, over-flowing look. Second, for a really showy basket you will almost certainly need twice as many plants as you think you will! For each wire basket, plan to use at least 2 strips (that’s sixteen little plants!) of something like Lobelia or Bidens; two upright plants for the centre top of the basket - small upright fuchsias or geraniums work well; four small bushy flowers like Busy Lizzies or petunias, for round the top edge of the basket, and three or four trailing plants - geraniums and trailing petunias would be perfect. This planting ‘recipe’ can be altered to suit your own tastes. For instance, I sometimes like to swap a couple of the trailing flowers for trailing foliage plants, such as Lysimachia nummularia or small leaved ivies.

22

Line the basket with moss raked from your lawn (though not if you’ve used a weed killer) or a proprietary liner. I prefer the liners because our garden birds steal the moss and my plants begin to fall out after a while! You’ll need about 10 litres of compost. Mix it with water retaining granules for best results. Soak the plants really well, then when you remove the little plants from their trays, you can give the root balls a good squeeze so they will be small enough to poke through the holes in the wire frame of the basket. Build the basket up in three tiers, adding more compost as each tier is planted. The best way to do this is to stand the basket on a large plant pot for stability Once planted, you can stand it in a sheltered area for a week or so if the frosts aren’t quite finished, otherwise you can hang it straight up. Make sure your brackets are sturdy and secure, or your beautiful basket might end up in a crumpled mess on the floor. Keep it watered and feed it once a week, as all those plants crammed into a tiny space deplete the nutrients in the compost very quickly Finally, sit back and enjoy being the object of neighbourhood basket-envy.

Computer

D

Backups

ue to various reasons, including power problems, overheating, device failures, I am seeing a lot of computers with either corrupted or failed hard drives. When I see these, people ask me if I can rescue their data. Sometimes it is possible, other times it is not. I always advise people to look at a backup solution for their computers, but I get responses like “I do not use it for business, so I don’t think I will need one as it is not important”. Firstly you need to see how much data (photos, music, word documents etc ) that you currently have to give us a basic starting point. You can use CDs, DVDs or memory sticks and either copy/paste the data or use the CD/DVD buring software on the PC. For larger data, you should look for an external hard drive. These normally have built in backup software that needs configuring. All these are fine, but you must remember to run the backup routine.

An alternative is a network backup device like the Netgear ReadyNAS products http://www.netgear.co.uk/home_desktop_ storage.php?src=home. They sit on your home computer network, and by using the inbuilt backup software they can automatically backup your data as you are using the PC. Another type of backup is a secure internet based, similar to that in the Norton 360 software, accessed via your broadband, but beware, these have an annual cost associated with them. If you do opt for one of these solutions, ensure that the data is on your computer and on the backup location. To hold it only on a backup device is not a backup – as it is in one place. Community Information Transition West Bridgford The Melton Road Market is warming up!

Since the last market we have seen the arrival of both new customers and 4 new, quality independent shops. First on the scene was BubbleIT, offering computer support services, computer & laptop repair, hardware & software computer sales and business to business support services. Then the highly regarded family butcher C Brumpton who have taken over from Seymour’s after David retired. Situated above Signature is Shade which is offering exquisite Bridal and occasion wear. No need to drive all the way into Nottingham to find something wonderful for that special occasion and then there is Click Sport, located in the old Celebrations shop, offering team sports and leisure wear. Pay them a visit and check them out for yourselves. Over the last few months, hundreds of local residents have got (re) acquainted with the Melton Road businesses and treated themselves and their families to the high quality goods and services. In addition to the quality and variety of shops, there have been crafts, entertainment and music, generously provided by local residents, giving it a real sense of community involvement. Last month the West Bridgford Social singers livened up the market, together with Julian the Juggler who got children and adults to join in the fun to bring a friendly and inviting atmosphere to the shopping experience This month, Saturday 7th May, we expect Julian the Juggler to come back as well as a performance by the Greenwood Clog dancers at 12 noon. Local artist, Helen Williams will be organising children’s art activities and the Vulnerable bead is selling beautiful jewellery made with semi precious stones. All of the participating shops will be organising

something special to promote their local suppliers, there will be sausage tasting ahead of the BBQ season at C Brumpton, Cheese tasting at Canterbury’s, seafood tasting at Paolo’s, Richard’s local honey at The Tall Frog, cupcake decorating and delicious home made chutneys at Taste. Please come and support this monthly event; meet the shopkeepers, check out what they have on offer and experience the fabulous quality and atmosphere for yourselves . You may ask why is it so important to buy local? By doing so you nurture locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages, reduction in transport costs and serve primarily local consumers, It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs. Significantly more money recirculates in our towns when consumers choose to support our locally owned businesses. Unlike their national competition, locally owned businesses regularly purchase from other local retailers, manufacturers, service providers and farms. Supporting our locally owned businesses is critical in growing a strong economy and tax base, benefitting everyone who lives here. The Melton Road market is different from a farmer’s market. You can buy the same type of food and much more. All the participating shops are open the days and weeks following the market ready to provide you with advice, the beautiful and delicious goods, they employ local people, contribute to the local economy by paying their taxes and keep our shopping streets interesting and vibrant. Visit their shops regularly, give them your business and be part of a growing and stronger local community. For more details about ALL the shops on Melton Road and what is on at the market please visit www.meltonrdshops.co.uk .
