Exploring the Apple Isle Lee Midson
In Australia we are fortunate to have a diverse climate and a varied landscape that offers some of the most beautiful and pristine locations in the world. One such location is the island of Tasmania, our most southern region, which has a treasure trove of places to explore. Here you can discover the beauty of world heritage listed wilderness and ancient rainforests, visit historic settlements of Australia’s colonial pioneering days, stroll along white sandy beaches, tour quaint coastal villages or savour the delights of some of our country’s finest produce and award-winning wines. For golfers there is the additional lure and opportunity to explore over 80 golf courses throughout Tasmania, which include several championship 18-hole courses located in and around Hobart and Launceston and over sixty 9-hole courses dotted throughout the island. Tasmania is also home to Australia’s number one public access course, Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links, which is currently rated as the 35th best course in the world by US Golf magazine and has certainly put Tasmania on the global stage as one of the world’s most alluring golf destinations.
“
The breathtaking landscape, in which the course has been created is reminiscent of the wild coastal links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
In contrast, Tasmania also boasts the oldest golf course in the southern hemisphere that is remarkably the second oldest golf course outside Scotland – the Ratho Golf Links in Bothwell. This historic course was the birthplace of golf in Australia and also has a museum with golfing memorabilia dating back to the late 1800s. With such a diverse range of golf courses and sightseeing options you can create an exciting itinerary that combines all the best of Tasmania. Here we cover some of Tasmania’s best courses and accommodation options, with some great offers available to Drummond Club members.

He was one of the elite of his sport, renowned for legendary Test innings and swashbuckling one-day international performances - not to mention superhuman efforts in the name of charity. These days Dean Jones is setting himself up for yet another milestone and the opportunity to again enthrall Australian crowds- well, galleries.
DRUMMOND CLUB
Dean played 52 Tests, scoring 3631 runs at an average of 46.55, and 164 one-day games, scoring 6068 runs, including seven centuries and 46 half-centuries, at an average of 44.61. In just his third Test Match, the tied Test at Madras in 1986-87, he played what Bob Simpson said was the greatest innings played for Australia (210) and he ended up in hospital on a saline drip. Many say he wrote the book on how to play the one-day game. He was a natural showman who was for a while as popular as any other player in Australia. Since retirement he has carved out a niche as a forthright commentator in the subcontinent. Along with his prolific cricket skills, for 20 years Dean has offered his services to charity in many ways. Notably in 2003 Dean and his wife, Jane, walked from Sydney to Melbourne raising over $1.4 million for the Bone Marrow Donor Institute. On 12 June 2006, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for “service to cricket as a player, coach and commentator, and to the community through fundraising activities for organisations assisting people with cancer”.

Dean has just turned 48: the big 50 is just around the corner. For most it is an age that represents a time for reflection and an approaching era of slowing down and enjoying the fruits of life. For Dean it represents another exciting opportunity- the opportunity to once again be competitive at the elite level and push himself beyond his comfort zone. Looking at what he has achieved, who could doubt his ambition to match it with the best on the Australian Seniors Golf Tour.

BARNBOUGLE DUNES GOLF LINKS 427 Waterhouse Road, Bridport
Barnbougle Dunes is approximately an hour’s drive north east from Launceston on the shores of Bass Strait and is currently ranked the number one public access course in Australia. The breathtaking landscape, in which the course has been created is reminiscent of the wild coastal links courses of Scotland and Ireland. The original vision for this magnificent 18-hole course is credited to a young man by the name of Greg Ramsey, a Bridport resident who saw the potential for a unique course that could rival the world’s top links courses. Barnbougle Dunes is situated on a remote stretch of land in the north east of Tasmania that was first settled in the mid-1800s. The current landowner, Richard Sattler, purchased the property in 1989 as a commercial farm, growing a range of potatoes, beef and wool for the Australian and export markets. The 13,000acre farm had a boundary strip of windswept undulating coastal dunes, and while this was deemed unsuitable for farming, it was regarded as ideal for a world-class links golf course. After much consultation, Sattler was finally convinced to invest in the development of an 18-hole public golf course.
There are three types of accommodation available on site, including 22 quaint 2-bedroom cottages that are set among the sand dunes (16 queen double and 6 king single cottages) offering a choice of single, twin, triple and quad-share. There are also three deluxe 4-bedroom villas that offer a private ensuite for each bedroom, a kitchen, open-plan living with a large dining and lounge area, and exterior deck which overlooks the golf course, beach and surrounding property. Guest facilities include a restaurant, snack bar and lounge in the clubhouse. A second 18-hole golf course called ‘the Lost Farm’ is under construction and scheduled to open in 2pring 2010. The course is being designed by US architect company, Coore and Crenshaw, headed by designer Bill Coore. Unlike Barnbougle Dunes, the Lost Farm will feature 20 holes. The 19th will be a bye hole, which you can either leave or play as a betting hole. The extra 20th hole was planned as a spare if another hole is under maintenance. The proposed $10 million development also includes plans for a 4-5 star lodge. Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links is sure to become one of the world’s great golf resorts, offering two 18-hole championship golf courses that will be accessible to the general public year round and suitable for golfers of all skill levels. The pitch was wet and dangerous, and you had fast bowlers like Marshall, Holding, Garner and Roberts trying to kill you. I was batting with Alan Border and there were 30,000 screaming West Indians with full bands playing in the crowds. You looked at the pitch and you knew you were in trouble because the divots where the ball was hitting were halfway down the pitch. It was dangerous. Do you remember the first ball you faced? I remember the first ball I faced from Joel Garner. The keeper was standing 25 metres back. When you looked around the field and noticed that the only other fielder in front of the wicket was the bowler himself, you knew you were in trouble.

Alan Border without doubt is the godfather of the renaissance of Australian cricket.
You played 52 Test Matches and scored 11 centuries, yet you are quoted as rating the innings of 48 on debut in 1984 as your “best knock”. Why?

This spectacular course, designed by Tom Doak and Australia’s Michael Clayton, was created where possible using the existing natural contours of the land. At Barnbougle Dunes, golf is an experience that excites all the senses. With the sun on your back, the wind in your hair, the whiff of sea salt and the roar of the ocean you’ll be captivated by all that Mother Nature has to offer. The course presents itself in a new dimension each day and a choice of four tee options provides exciting, challenging golf that will draw you back time and time again.

this.” Alan Border just looked at me and said, “You weak Victorian, If you can’t handle the conditions, let’s get a tough Australian out here” (Greg Ritchie was the next man in and like Alan Border was a Queenslander). It was enough to spur me on and I ended up making 210. In all seriousness, your health was at risk, wasn’t it?
Yes, I collapsed after the innings in the changing room and was unconscious. Our team physiotherapist, Errol Alcott, was worried about my blood pressure so I was rushed to hospital and given seven bottles of saline that night. I didn’t wake up until midnight or 1 in the morning. I lost seven kilos that day. It took me nine months to put that weight back on. I have a psychological problem with it now. If it gets over 37 degrees my body goes into shutdown mode and I start to shake.

Gutsy effort! Many say the defining moment in your Test career came during the famous tied Test in Madras where you scored 210 and thus played one of the epic Test innings in Australian cricket folklore. Take us through that experience. I was 68 not out overnight. I didn’t drink any water that evening. We didn’t know about hydration and dehydration in those days. I didn’t sleep well that night as the expectations over scoring my first test 100 were firmly on my mind. In the morning I was so nervous that I didn’t drink water again and hardly ate. Anyway I went out to bat and never expected to get the additional 32 runs so quickly. I got to a 100 and my mental side said to me that there is the biggest 100 here of all time. You are going to lick your chops. The pitch is flat. I was batting with Alan Border and doing it easy. Within an hour I was in all sorts of trouble. I was the Titantic about to be struck by an iceberg. My body started to melt down. I started cramping and vomiting. This led to involuntary urination, which was embarrassing. I got to 178 and after vomiting constantly out on the wicket area I wanted to leave the ground retired ill. Alan Border came over and said, “What are you doing?” I said, “I’m going off retired ill. I have had enough. I shouldn’t be doing
Everyone believes it was a gutsy effort, but I don’t believe it was as anyone who represents their country in any form would go through a brick wall. I didn’t find it. Courageous is what Alan Border did against the West Indies in 1984. They literally tried to kill him. He was a little bloke of 5 foot 4 being attacked by 7-foot West Indian guys with a projectile bowled at 160 clicks on dangerous wickets, with only onethird of a second reaction time to respond. You speak very highly of Alan Border and consider him to be one of your mentors. Alan Boarder without doubt is the godfather of the renaissance of Australian cricket. He is the king. He lost a lot of guys who took the blood money and went to South Africa [the rebel tour]. He had a team of kids and made a great cricket team. As much as Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting have been great captains, without him the current Australian cricket team would not be in the position it is in today. He brought new benchmarks regarding the levels of fitness and professionalism needed and laid the ground rules on what was expected. >>

70 Your Feedback Autumn / Winter 2009 - Beyond the Fairways | 3

From the Managing Director
W
elcome to the autumn/winter edition of Beyond the Fairways. As we approach 30,000 members I would like to thank all of you for joining the Drummond Club. This year promises to be one of the biggest in Australian golf, with Tiger Woods making an appearance at Kingston Heath in the Australian Masters in November. This is sure to reinvigorate the Masters and we hope the tournament can return to the glory days of the eighties and nineties when large galleries followed "The Great White Shark". There has been a lot written and said about the fee paid to get such a golfing icon to Australia. Without entering into the debate on what we have had to pay Tiger Woods I can only recall my sporting heroes and the significant influence they had on my participation in sport at the time. Greg Norman, Greg Chapel, Viv Richards, Dennis Lillie, Malcolm Blight, Harry Kewell, Wally Lewis, Matthew Burke and other greats were easily seen for a token entrance fee. It is no coincidence that cricket, AFL, soccer and rugby still thrive in Australia because our children can simply pay a reasonable entry fee to go and watch their idols in action. In this electronic era of internet, Pay TV, YouTube, high definition TV etc, our kids are watching sport all around the world and finding new heroes that they may never see in the flesh. We shouldn’t underestimate the influence that such an experience can have on someone taking up a sport or committing more to it.
Tiger Woods could be more than just the best player of his generation: he could possibly be the greatest golfer of all time. What a great opportunity it would be for the future generation of golfers to watch him smash a drive or hole a crucial putt live. These memories would live on forever and may just be the catalyst that delivers the next generation of all conquering Australian golfers. We are sadly in a time when large amounts of money are required to get the best to compete in Australia. I would therefore put out the challenge to the golf manufacturers, who pay massive endorsements to these players, to insist in their contracts that they visit other countries on a frequent basis and help grow golf globally. Wouldn’t it be great to get the best visiting Australia on a regular basis just as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer did in the sixties. With the Australian economy holding up better than most I am sure that the CEOs of Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist and Ping would like to have participation at a higher level in this country right now. I hope many of you have a chance to get to Kingston Heath in November to watch the Tiger in action. I know I will be doing my best to be there and of course my son and daughter will be with me. Kind regards,
Mark Abeyaratne

The latest Smoothy Suspension buggy, Summit Lite (9 kgs), has every possible accessory feature on it, making it the most complete suspension buggy available. It can fold down with one release movement to a mere 77cm x 53cm x 31cm with all three wheels detached.
The Smoothy Storm has a myriad of championship features and benefits. A wider ergonomic dual grip handle makes this buggy easy to push and more manoeuvrable. golfglossary
"Golf tech talk" can be pretty confusing, even to the accomplished golfer. Following is a brief explanation of the terminology to help you better understand the golf tech talk commonly used. 460cc
is the maximum legal size that you can build a golf club head under the USGA and R&A rules. CC refers to cubic centimetres and 460 refers to the amount of water that is displaced in cubic centimetres when a golf club head is placed in a container of water, as an example.
Wide body is a reference to the new generation of drivers in which the crown (top) of the club has been flattened to make the face shallower and to move more weight to the back of the club, making the club more forgiving and easier to launch (to get it up in the air) the ball. Titanium
COR
an extremely light and very strong material - so is ideal for golf club heads. It allows manufacturers to make heads bigger without compromising the structure, balance and strength of the club. Some manufacturers take this to the next level by adding graphite to the crown (top) of the club. As graphite is lighter than titanium this gives them extra weight (referred to as "discretionary weight" by most manufacturers) that they can use to strengthen other areas of the head to improve forgiveness. is an acronym for "Coefficient of Restitution". The coefficient of restitution is a measurement of the energy loss or retention when two objects collide. 0.830 is the maximum legal amount of COR a club head can have under the USGA and R&A rules. This means that when the club head strikes the ball, there cannot be more than an 83% transfer of the energy of the head to the ball.
18 | Beyond the Fairways - Autumn / Winter 2009
CG
is an acronym for "Centre of Gravity" and in simple terms refers to the balance point of the object or in this case the club head. Altering the balance point in the head by shifting weight to differing parts will influence the forgiveness and more importantly the trajectory (ball flight) of the shot. The simple rule is the lower the CG the higher the trajectory and vice versa.
MOI
is an acronym for "Moment of Inertia". MOI, in simple terms, is a property of physics that indicates how easy or difficult it will be to set any object in motion about a defined axis of rotation. In golf marketing terms MOI refers to the level of forgiveness a club head offers on off-centre hits. The higher the MOI, the less the club head will twist on off-centre hits and less distance will be lost. So the higher the MOI the better it is for most golfers.
Forging
involves literally pounding or compressing the metal, in its solid form, to make the iron-head into the designed shape. A number of other machining and drilling steps will follow to complete the production of the ironhead.
Casting
involves turning the metal from which the iron-head is to be made into its molten, liquid state, after which it is poured into a mould to form the iron-head design.

Wilson Staff Smooth Driver
Di9 Irons
The new Wilson Staff Smooth 460cc Driver melds form with function; its smooth shape outside is matched by the powerful, efficient performance on the inside. Inspired by sleek, uninterrupted lines of today’s high performance vehicles, Smooth is beautiful to look at and exhilarating to drive.
The new Wilson Staff Di9 Irons are the highest MOI irons Wilson has ever developed. Featuring wide soles and lower blade heights for a higher launch along with a thin face which produces higher ball speed and more distance.
A larger sweet spot is developed by proprietary variable face thickness design which delivers a sweet spot twice as wide as a constant thickness face. As loft increases weight is moved further back in the head to maximise head stability and improve the launch conditions appropriate for each loft.
The wide tip shafts reduce twisting at impact on off centre hits and an increased sweet spot through toe-friendly weighting. A 3.5º lofting strategy has been created for more accurate distance gapping. With a urethane shock trap insert to minimise vibration and softer tip control shafts for more responsive feel, the Wilson Staff Di9 irons are a step above the award-winning Di7 irons.
The Wilson Staff Smooth Driver incorporates Fujikura E-Fit Shaft Technology with two stock series available depending on the player profile:
2009 Golf Digest ‘HOT LIST’ for super game-improvement iron.
• The E 100 series is designed for golfers with smoother swing tempos. With increased tip flexibility, this shaft series offers a higher launch with slightly more spin. • The E 300 series is geared for stronger golfers with faster tempos who want lower spin and a mid launch.

Used by 2008 US PGA Player of the Year and three time Major winner, Padraig Harrington, the new Wilson Staff Tw9 wedges feature tour-milled grooves to generate maximum spin for performance and accuracy from greater distances. New, lower-lofted cavity back options bridge the gap between the modern pitching wedge and the sand wedge for improved distance gapping.

Cobra S9-1 Driver
S9-1 Fairway Wood
The all-new Cobra S9-1 Drivers have enhanced the Hotter 9 Points technology to further increase clubface efficiency. Cobra engineers started by designing the face shape with a 1:1 length-to-width ratio, allowing for a more efficient transfer of energy from the clubface to the ball.
The all-new S9-1 Fairway Woods include Hotter 9 Points technology for more COR across the entire clubface. Additionally, the large footprint and shallow face with constant thickness push CG lower and MOI higher, further increasing launch and forgiveness. The result of all this technology: easy-to-hit fairway woods that bring any green within reach.
This refined Hotter 9 Points technology is also integrated with the Milled Dual Rhombus Face Insert that maximises COR for higher ball speeds and more consistent ball flight across the entire clubface. And with the S9-1 Drivers’ Frequency Tuned internal crown rib geometry, you will produce drives that sound and feel as satisfying as they look.

TaylorMade R9 Driver
R9 Fairway Wood
What sets the new TaylorMade R9 Driver apart from all other drivers is that it incorporates new TaylorMade Flight Control Technology, or FCT for short. With a simple twist of a wrench, FCT allows you to change the R9’s face angle, loft and lie angle.
Introducing the new TaylorMade R9 Fairway Woods which incorporate TaylorMade’s innovative new Flight Control Technology (FCT) that allows the player to adjust the head characteristics – face angle, loft and lie – in one of eight ways.
The R9 Driver is totally adjustable as opposed to partially adjustable by uniting FCT with MWT. The club head features three weight ports and comes equipped with one 16-gram and two 1-gram weights. Place the heavy weight in the heel port to promote a draw, in the toe port to promote a fade, and in the middle port to promote a straight flight.
FCT in the R9 Fairway Woods promotes a side-to-side trajectory change of up to 35 yards, helping players to dial in straighter, longer shots. An added advantage of FCT is that it allows players to dial in the look they prefer at address with the face angle either square, slightly closed or slightly open, promoting increased confidence.
Featuring a new club head shape, the R9 Driver merges modern and classic lines with incredible effectiveness. It’s best described as a cross between the r7 SuperQuad and the r7 Limited – a triangular shape with beautifully contoured corners. TaylorMade calls it ‘New Classic’ because it is at once modern and traditional and should prove to be popular for a long time to come. Combination of Flight Control Technology & Moveable Weight Technology together promote up to 75 yards of side-to-side trajectory adjustability.

Rescue 2009
Burner 09 Iron
At first glance you will notice the new TaylorMade Rescue hybrid’s club head is refreshingly compact which improves playability, especially out of trouble spots like the rough.
The new TaylorMade Burner 09 Irons are the most dynamic looking, best performing iron ever to bear the TaylorMade name.
Despite its smaller size, it still looks substantial and easy to launch. It's appealing shape is more refined and its two-tiered, monochromatic crown and silver club face are a distinct improvement over the Rescue Mid’s appearance. A crown decal is strategically positioned to make it easier to align the club face properly to the target-line promoting increased accuracy. Although the Rescue hybrid’s size is smaller to the original Rescue Mid, the new club has the benefit of Ultra-Thin Wall Technology in the crown which saves enough weight to significantly lower the CG location.
Every club – long irons, middle irons and short irons – earned high marks for distance, accuracy and forgiveness during TaylorMade testing. Likewise its revolutionary design featuring a futuristic blend of curves, angles and lines, is completed with a dark, almost sinister finish. More important, each one of these sleek machines performs like nothing else. With the new Burner Irons, the typical conventions of club length, swing weight and overall club weight were redefined, as was the mass property progression for club-to-club, dimensional progression from club-to-club and head shape. The point being that TaylorMade has literally re-invented how they go about designing a set of irons. The combination of elements that gives the Burner Irons meaningful distance is being called SuperFast Technology. The improved SuperFast Technology incorporates progressive COR, MOI and shaft length, plus ultra-light shafts and grips reduce overall club weight and increase speed to generate meaningful distance.

Exploring the Apple Isle By Lee Midson
In Australia we are fortunate to have a diverse climate and a varied landscape that offers some of the most beautiful and pristine locations in the world. One such location is the island of Tasmania, our most southern region, which has a treasure trove of places to explore. Here you can discover the beauty of world heritage listed wilderness and ancient rainforests, visit historic settlements of Australia’s colonial and pioneering days, stroll along white sandy beaches, tour quaint coastal villages or savour the delights of some of our country’s finest produce and award-winning wines.

The breathtaking landscape in which the course has been created is reminiscent of the wild coastal links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
36 | Beyond the Fairways - Autumn / Winter 2009
For golfers there is the additional lure and opportunity to explore over 80 golf courses throughout Tasmania, which include several championship 18-hole courses located in and around Hobart and Launceston and over 60 9-hole courses dotted throughout the island. Tasmania is also home to Australia’s number one public access course, Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links, which is currently rated as the 35th best course in the world by US Golf Magazine and has certainly put Tasmania on the global stage as one of the world’s most alluring golf destinations. In contrast, Tasmania also boasts the oldest golf course in the southern hemisphere that is remarkably the second oldest golf course outside Scotland - the Ratho Golf Links in Bothwell. This historic course was the birthplace of golf in Australia and it also has a museum with golfing memorabilia dating back to the late 1800s. With such a diverse range of golf courses and sightseeing options you can create an exciting itinerary that combines all the best of Tasmania. Here we cover some of Tasmania’s best courses and accommodation options, with some great offers available to Drummond Club members.

Launceston and Surrounds BARNBOUGLE DUNES GOLF LINKS 427 Waterhouse Road, Bridport
Barnbougle Dunes is approximately an hour’s drive north-east from Launceston on the shores of Bass Strait and is currently ranked the number one public access course in Australia. The breathtaking landscape in which the course has been created is reminiscent of the wild coastal links courses of Scotland and Ireland. The original vision for this magnificent 18-hole course is credited to a young man by the name of Greg Ramsey, a Bridport resident who saw the potential for a unique course that could rival the world’s top links courses. Barnbougle Dunes is situated on a remote stretch of land in the north-east of Tasmania that was first settled in the mid-1800s.
A second 18-hole golf course called ‘the Lost Farm’ is under construction and scheduled to open in spring 2010. The course is being designed by US architects Coore and Crenshaw, headed by designer Bill Coore. LAUNCESTON GOLF CLUB Opossum Road, Kings Meadows
Launceston Golf Club, just 10 minutes drive from the centre of Launceston, is Tasmania’s oldest 18-hole golf course.
Country Club Tasmania has won many awards since 1982, including Australian Resort of the Year, best restaurant, best conference facility, best entertainment venue, and best accommodation venue. The resort includes 104 hotel rooms (plus 78 units at the Country Club villas), 5 bars, 3 restaurants, a boutique casino, and a top-class conference venue. The sporting and leisure facilities include tennis, squash, horse riding, flyfishing and a health club.
The club was first established in 1899 and is recognised as one of Australia’s oldest private golf clubs. Its history dates back to the early pioneering days in Tasmania, when a group of golf enthusiasts played the first game of golf at Reservoir Hill in Lawrence Vale, and later transferred to an area at Newstead that was deemed to be more suitable. In the early 1900s it became known as the Launceston Golf Club and eventually opened a new clubhouse and private golf course in King Meadows on 11 May 1907, where it has celebrated over 100 years at this site.
During a recent trip to Launceston I had the pleasure of staying at this resort and was most impressed. The facilities are firstclass and the hotel rooms are tastefully decorated with attention to every detail. For the ultimate dining experience be sure to
The club prides itself on being the best course in northern Tasmania and one of the best on the island, and was inducted into the Tasmanian Golf Hall of Fame last year. The course is set in native bushland and is recognised as a native bird sanctuary.

The club has a policy of planting 100 new indigenous trees each year. It is a tight course at 6025m but the heavily tree-lined fairways penalise wayward shots. The greens are challenging and usually moderate to quick. Launceston Golf Club is a first-class championship course and is fortunate to be built on incredibly quick draining land that largely eliminates wet weather as a deterring factor. In February this year, when the club hosted the Tasmanian Open, 26mm of rain bucketed down in 30 minutes but play resumed just over an hour later. The previous time the Tasmanian Open was held at the club was in 1999 and it was won by Brendan Jones, with Aaron Baddeley coming second. In September 2007, the club hosted the Australian Teams event and in February 2010 it will be the host venue for the Australian Boys Championship. For interstate visitors, including a round at Launceston Golf Club on your itinerary is highly recommended. Drummond Club Member Offer 2 for 1 green fee offer - valid 7 days.
This sandbelt course is ranked as one of the most challenging in the state. Built in 1950, it is a great mix of traditional resort, and links-style holes, and its greens are recognised as among the best in Tasmania. Hobart and Surrounds ROYAL HOBART GOLF COURSE 81 Seven Mile Beach Road, Seven Mile Beach
Royal Hobart Golf Club is located at Seven Mile Beach on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, and is only 10 minutes drive from the airport and approximately 20 minutes from the CBD. Its predecessor, Hobart Golf Club, dates back to 1896. In 1915 the club purchased 130 acres of land on Hobart’s eastern shore at Rosny and a new course was opened in 1916. However, because of the accelerated development of the eastern shore after World War II, it was agreed in 1956 that the club would move to a new site at Seven Mile Beach.
Today Royal Hobart is recognised as Tasmania’s premier members’ club and particular emphasis is placed on presenting the course in impeccable condition all year round. The course is in a natural bushland setting, constructed on sandy soil with gentle contours and adjacent to the magnificent Seven Mile Beach. The original course designer, Vern Morcom, made good use of the natural sand base to construct over 80 fairway and greenside bunkers. These are a special feature of the course that add an important dimension to how players of all levels approach their game. This championship 18-hole course (6133m with an ACR 72) has hosted a number of major championship events over the years, including the Tasmanian Open, Australian Amateur, Australian Women’s Amateur, and the Qantas Australian Open in 1971, which was won by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. In 1997 a new course master plan was adopted to guide long-term improvements to ensure Royal Hobart continues to offer a challenging golfing experience for members and visitors alike. THE TASMANIA GOLF CLUB Tasman Highway, Barilla Bay
Bounded by water on three sides, the spectacular Tasmania Golf Club is set on the picturesque Barilla Bluff, just 15 minutes east of the Hobart CBD and only 2 minutes from the airport. The course was designed by architect Al Howard and opened for play in 1971. It is a challenging, undulating par 72 (ACR 72.9) course, characterised by well-bunkered, breaking greens that reward well thought out approach shots. Fairways are narrow, with some target areas less than 20m wide, but the greens are sensational-fast, smooth and true. The signature hole is the 3rd, a 528m par 5 that follows the natural curve of the bay. This memorable experience demands a strong drive, well-planned second and perfect approach to a well-guarded green. Better players will flirt with the hazard. Long hitters will cut the corner enough for a long iron to the green. Members still recall when Brett Ogle was playing with a group of juniors (including Nathan Gatehouse, who later won the Victorian PGA and was runner up in the New Zealand Open) that he hit an enormous drive that measured around 340m, leaving just an 8 iron to the green! Of course the other 17 holes have their challenges too. In particular, the short par 3 at the 11th hole, a downhill shot overlooking the bay to a narrow green guarded by bunkers at the front and impenetrable tea-tree at the rear, can require either a flicked sand wedge or a flat-out 2-iron, depending on the "breeze". All four par-3 holes are different, from the 197m uphill at the 5th to the 167m uphill 18th, where a two-tiered green demands good ball striking if you plan on walking off the course with a par on the last. But it is the Tasmanian weather that makes the course truly a test of golfing ability. On a perfectly still summer day, Tasmania Golf Club is a fabulous sight and a delight to play. On the other hand, a cool spring day with typically strong October winds will provide a challenge that you’ll long remember. CLAREMONT GOLF COURSE 1 Bournville Crescent, Claremont
Claremont Golf Course is set on the Derwent River, with spectacular river and mountain views. It is the only private golf club situated in the northern suburbs of Hobart and is just a short 18-minute drive from the CBD and major hotels and casino. The 18-hole course is a par 71 of 5667m and it is challenging but not daunting for the average golfer. The magnificent scenery of the course and the Derwent River are overlooked by the clubhouse, where you can relax before and after a game. Picturesque water hazards, fast true greens, bunkers and doglegs ensure every golf shot in the book is utilised. While Claremont is a private members club, public access to the course is available on most days, excluding Saturdays. The Claremont Golf Course has a long history in the area. It was originally farmland worked by local residents then was used as a training ground for personnel of the Lighthorse and infantry during World War I between 1914 and 1918. The site became the property of the English company Cadbury when the company decided to establish its southern hemisphere operations in Tasmania in 1921. This superb area, comprising 99 acres is now owned by Claremont Golf Club Inc., which purchased it in 1973 from the Cadbury organisation. The course has developed over the years from a rough, stony area, complete with a galvanised iron structure for a clubhouse, to one of the four major metropolitan courses around Hobart. It is considered one of the best courses in Tasmania, with a wellappointed clubhouse built following a fire in 1982 that destroyed the original structure. Six of the original 9 holes have been incorporated in the 18-hole layout, but they have been modified and varied to conform to the current course design, which has been developed to produce additional length to approach standards laid down for championship events.

Story
2009 RED CROSS
VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE APPEAL
By Lee Midson
Management and staff at Drummond Golf and the Drummond Club joined forces to support this appeal and raise funds for the families and communities devastated by the recent Victorian bushfires. For many Victorians the summer season is a wonderful time to enjoy the great outdoors and a welcome respite from the colder winter months. Summer is spent enjoying family vacations, lazy days at the beach and an abundance of daylight and twilight hours for a round of golf and many other recreational sports and leisure activities. But this year’s Victorian summer reached scorching temperatures over several consecutive days that were higher than ever recorded before, causing catastrophic bushfires throughout the state, and tragically the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history. Like many, I vividly remember the week leading up to 'Black Saturday' (7 February 2009). The daily temperatures were steadily rising to the mid 40s and the heat was becoming unbearable. The raging fires savagely destroyed many communities throughout regional Victoria and the loss of family homes and lives has been incomprehensible for most of us. According to the latest media reports by the Victorian state government, it is thought that 173 people perished and more than 2000 homes were destroyed, leaving over 7500 people homeless. Many Australians, including individuals, small businesses, corporations and organisations throughout Australia, have come together to provide assistance and support for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal, by offering donations and undertaking various fundraising activities. Management and staff at Drummond Golf and the Drummond Club also embarked on fundraising at two recent golf events held in Victoria and Western Australia. We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the assistance and support provided by suppliers and partners in the Australian golf industry, our Drummond Club event partners and sponsors, and the generosity of our Drummond Club members, who dug deep into their pockets also. 46 | Beyond the Fairways - Autumn / Winter 2009

YERING MEADOWS GOLF CLUB, Victoria Thursday, 26 February 2009 Yering Meadows Golf Club is located in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and was at one point in the direct line of the bushfires that were engulfing the surrounding regions. The club was fortunate to escape serious property damage, losing a couple of maintenance sheds, but a track of black parched land on the club’s north boundary is a stark reminder of just how close the fires came. The first Drummond Club event for the 2009 series was scheduled at Yering Meadows for 26 February, only a couple of weeks after the devastating fires. We had wondered at one point whether it would still go ahead, but fortunately, with the fires under control towards the end of the month, we continued with our plans and took the opportunity to incorporate several fund raising activities for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. These included raffles at registration and during presentations, on-course competitions, donations and a charity auction at the conclusion of the event. The support from the major suppliers in the Australian golf industry was overwhelming, with a host of golf products donated for event prizes and charity auction items. In particular, we wish to thank Callaway, Adidas, TaylorMade, Titleist, Cobra, Dunlop Sport and Oakley for their support. www.drummondclub.com

Industry Partners and Event Sponsors Yering Meadows Golf Club, a valued Drummond Club partner, provided $1110 in green fee donations. Lion Nathan provided complimentary beer for all players at the completion of the round and a raffle prize where you could win enough cases of Lion Nathan beer to match your height! Other corporate donations were from the National Australia Bank, Australian Slatwall Industries, Sydney Point of Sale, Mei & Picchi and Club4Golf (the national management team for the Drummond Club). Novelty competitions and fundraising activities on course included a three-tier nearest the pin (NTP) competition and raffle on the 12th hole conducted by Ravi Abeyaratne and Jodi Straughair from the Drummond Golf head office. On the 16th hole, Sam Gole and Lee Midson from the Drummond Club, together with Brett Ogle, conducted an NTP competition which players could enter via a donation and win a sleeve of Titleist Pro V golf balls if they could hit inside either Sam or Brett’s shot.
Charity Auction Following the event presentations we conducted the charity auction with a collection of items provided by golf industry suppliers, event partners and sponsors. Drummond Golf provided a framed golf shirt autographed by several prominent female sport stars, including Laura Davies, Carrie Webb, Sharelle McMahon and Dawn Fraser. Memorabilia Magic provided eight auction items including an autographed print of Tiger Woods and Adidas provided two Collingwood footy jumpers, framed by Memorabilia Magic, which were signed by the entire Collingwood football team. We thank Anthony Murphy from the Drummond Club and Ben Johnson from Collingwood for organising the provision of these jumpers. Our special thanks also to Alan Johnston, who acted as our auctioneer on the day and kindly donated his services free of charge. In total all the fundraising activities at this event raised $8197 in support of the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.
Jarrod Mosely (Drummond Golf Mandurah) NTP Competition, 4th Hole The Cut Golf Club
THE CUT GOLF CLUB, Western Australia Sunday, 15 March 2009 The management teams and staff at Drummond Golf in Western Australia, including Osborne Park, Cannington and Mandurah stores, joined together for the first Drummond Club event in their state to also raise funds for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. This event attracted a capacity field of 139 players, with some Drummond Club members travelling from the eastern states to compete also. Fundraising activities on the day included a raffle at registration, on-course novelty competitions and a charity auction held prior to the official event presentations.
Industry Partners and Event Sponsors At registration, players could enter a $10 ticket raffle and had the chance to win a host of prizes sponsored by Retravision, including a Hewlett Packard IPAQ rx4500 mobile media companion, a Philips micro theatre 177 MCD, and a 3.5 inch digital photo frame. Our special thanks are extended to Callaway, Titleist, Wilson, Oakley and TaylorMade for their support on the day and to the John Hughes Group, The Cut, Seashells Resort Mandurah and Howling Wolves wines for their generous event prizes. From Drummond Golf Mandurah, Jarrod Mosely (Australian touring professional) with his wife, Danielle Mosely, and Ian Taylor, conducted a "Beat the Pro" NTP competition on the 4th hole. Players who managed to hit inside Jarrod’s shot automatically entered a lucky prize draw and had the chance to win an iPod and dock sponsored by the John Hughes Group.
Charity Auction David and Sara Breen and Wayne Tardrew from Drummond Golf Osborne Park and Cannington organised over 25 auction items, including framed golf shirts and other sporting memorabilia autographed by some of Australia’s top golf professionals. In total all fundraising activities at this event raised $4850 in support of the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
OUR FINAL CONTRIBUTION In total, the events in Victoria and Western Australia, our fundraising activities and Drummond Golf store contributions raised over $15,000 and we thank everyone again for their support and generous contributions. www.drummondclub.com

SUPPORT
Marysville Golf & Bowls Club The beautiful township of Marysville, 90 minutes from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, has been in the news recently – for all the wrong reasons. The horrific fires that tore through the town and surrounding districts killed nearly 10% of the town’s permanent population and destroyed 98% of the buildings, both residential and commercial.
The golf and bowls clubhouse was one of the few buildings left standing, but just about everything on the course was either destroyed or badly damaged. About $1.5M worth of irrigation systems, bridges, fences, machinery and sheds went up in smoke, and a massive cleanup and repair job is needed on many of the greens and fairways. With no substantial permanent resident base left and none of the famous Golf carts that didn't make it
Marysville guesthouses to attract overnight visitors, the club faces a few very difficult years as it seeks to restore the course to a playable condition and both rebuild the member base and attract green fee players - the lifeblood of most country courses. A big concern is that once the fires cease to be “news”, the public and media will lose interest and move on. How can you help Marysville and the Golf and Bowls Club to rebuild? There are several things you or your club can do, such as run a fundraising event at your club and “Adopt a Hole” - adoptions are available for as little as $1000 - or you can donate as an individual by

becoming a “Friend of Marysville Community Golf and Bowls”. Details of both of these programs are on their website www.marysvillegolfandbowls.com.au The best thing you can do is to register your email address on their website and they’ll let you know when they have the first 9 holes, then 18 holes open for play. You’d be doing what you love and helping to rebuild both the club and the township. And they’d love to see you! In regional towns the sporting facilities have a vital role in the social activities of the local community and helping rebuild the golf course will be an important part of the healing process.

An Interview with Dean Jones by Sam Gole
He was one of the elite of his sport, renowned for legendary Test innings and swashbuckling one-day international performances - not to mention superhuman efforts in the name of charity. These days Dean Jones is setting himself up for yet another milestone and the opportunity to again enthrall Australian crowds - well, galleries. On 12 June 2006, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for “service to cricket as a player, coach and commentator, and to the community through fundraising activities for organisations assisting people with cancer. Dean has just turned 48: the big 50 is just around the corner. For most it is an age that represents a time for reflection and an approaching era of slowing down and enjoying the fruits of life. For Dean it represents another exciting opportunity - the opportunity to once again be competitive at the elite level and push himself beyond his comfort zone. Looking at what he has achieved, who could doubt his ambition to match it with the best on the Australian Seniors Golf Tour. 54 | Beyond the Fairways - Autumn / Winter 2009

Alan Border without doubt is the godfather of the renaissance of Australian cricket.
You played 52 Test Matches and scored 11 centuries, yet you are quoted as rating the innings of 48 on debut in 1984 as your “best knock”. Why? The pitch was wet and dangerous, and you had fast bowlers like Marshall, Holding, Garner and Roberts trying to kill you. I was batting with Alan Border and there were 30,000 screaming West Indians with full bands playing in the crowds. You looked at the pitch and you knew you were in trouble because the divots where the ball was hitting were halfway down the pitch. It was dangerous. Do you remember the first ball you faced? I remember the first ball I faced from Joel Garner. The keeper was standing 25 metres back. When you looked around the field and noticed that other than the cover the only other fielder in front of the wicket was the bowler himself, you knew you were in trouble. I shouldn’t be doing this.” Alan Border just looked at me and said, “You weak www.drummondclub.com

Victorian, If you can’t handle the conditions, let’s get a tough Australian out here” (Greg Ritchie was the next man in and like Alan Border was a Queenslander).
Everyone believes it was a gutsy effort, but I don’t believe it was as anyone who represents their country in any form would go through a brick wall. I didn’t find it courageous. Courageous is what Alan Border did against the West Indies in 1984. T hey literally tried to kill him. He was a little bloke of 5 foot 4 being attacked by 7-foot West Indian guys with a projectile bowled at 160 clicks on dangerous wickets, with only one-third of a second reaction time to respond. You speak very highly of Alan Border and consider him to be one of your mentors. Alan Border without doubt is the godfather of the renaissance of Australian cricket. >>

Have you got a story from the tour to share with us? Nothing you can print [Dean laughs]. OK, just imagine this. You walk into Merv Hughes’ room on tour in India and there he is, naked on his bed watching Fred Flinstone and it is being spoken in Hindi and he is understanding every bit of it. A very scary sight. You have to laugh at that. Did you cop any sledging on the field? I have been racially abused and victimised by West Indian players. But back then both sides got into it and at the end of the day we all shook hands and had a beer and moved on. Today everyone is so politically correct.
What experience brought you the most joy during your cricket career? People assume that you are only happy if your individual performance is outstanding. The best fun is not after making a double century versus the West Indies or a 100 versus England during an Ashes series. The best fun is when you have won and you are in the changing room after the game with your team-mates. For the first half an hour pure adrenalin is running through your veins and you have this amazing cloud nine feeling. You don’t know who to kiss and hug first. It’s the biggest drug in the world and that’s what gets you up at 5 o’clock in the morning and make all the personal sacrifices. It’s a drug, it’s addictive and you want that feeling all the time.
Did any on-field comments make you laugh? The best sledge I heard was Adam Parore [New Zealand cricketer] to Mark Waugh. Warney was bowling to Adam and Junior [Mark] was fielding in close to the wicket. Junior slipped in something to Adam, so Adam held up Shane Warne. He looked Junior in the eye and said something to the effect, Well, you can have a go at me as much as you like but at least I am the best player in my family. You’re not. I thought it was a pretty good sledge. We all looked at each other and said, Yeah, he’s got a point, Junior. Mark was understandably silent.
“
It’s our sanctuary, no one else is allowed in there. It is not like the AFL or ARL where the cameras are in the rooms as the players file in. It’s the players’ time only. When you win there is always a rubbish bin full of beer and soft drinks waiting. You sit with the guys and reflect on what has just happened. Then you get Boony singing the theme song “Beneath the Southern Cross I Stand”. Funnily enough, you don’t need the beer. It’s there but you don’t taste it. It must have been hard to acclimatise when the party stopped for good.

The changing room after the game must be a pretty special place.
It is a very weird experience because I played for Australia for nearly twelve years and when you are not selected in the team you are not allowed in the changing room. You cannot walk in unless you are invited. At one stage I spent way too many years sleeping in the same room as David Boon, Ian Healy and Merv, more than I did with my wife. All of a sudden when you're not playing it is like divorce. It is an instant cut. Cricketers go through a hell of a depression. I went through one.
”
How did you counteract your depression?
The transition was very difficult. I established a company called Left Field Solutions [event management]. We organised the opening of the Sydney Olympic Stadium in 1999 and it was a successful event, and you just go from there. You can’t rest on your laurels any more. You can’t take the baggy green cap down to the post office and pay your Telstra bill.

you retire you do have the time. The Sydney to Melbourne walk, 1252km in 30 days with my wife, that’s 40km a day in heat, is the greatest and most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. We raised $1.4 million for the Bone Marrow Donor Institute. We walked into the MCG during the lunch interval of the Boxing Day Test Match. The biggest part of it was we had four kids with us that we were told would not last the four or five weeks it would take to walk to the ground. They wouldn’t be around to see it. I am proud to say that the four of them were either carried in or walked in with us and they are still alive today. Sometimes the kids just need a goal. The experience was invaluable for me too.
Many cricketers seem to have an affiliation with golf. David Boon’s 6-foot putts would challenge Tiger Woods. He is unbelievably solid. Ricky Ponting is just awesome off the tee. Greg Blewitt and Kapil Dev are off one. Ian Healy, Mark and Steve Waugh are off single figure handicaps. Probably the best cricketer-golfer was Ted Dexter from England. He played off plus three. A few guys now have turned pro, including Alastair Brown the opening batsman from Zimbabwe. We have a World Cricketers Golf Championship every two years. Two players from each team play. It’s great fun.
It was the first time in twenty years I spent 30 days in a row with my wife. I actually said to her in jest walking into the
What about your golfing ambitions?
MCG, “You’re not a bad bird”. I got a slap I must admit.
I have set a goal to play on the Australian Seniors Tour once I turn 50. I am still a competitive person and I realise that I have a long way to go. I am enjoying the journey. During the last four years I have really put my head down and reached a handicap of three. I am a member at Romsey Golf Club, Heathcote Golf Club, Hidden Valley Golf Club and Sanctuary Lakes. I am playing pennant golf now and really enjoying playing for my club with my clubmates. It’s funny - we fight each other to win club medals and club championships but now we are actually working together at pennant matches. Most of these guys haven’t played that much team sport and it’s about the mateship.
This year we are working on the Great Victorian Trek, to raise money for Yooralla. You have also expressed a love of playing golf. When did this start? Golf was an important release for us on tour. We got away from phones and people. We were still competitive and played on some of the great golf courses. You know what the great thing about golf and this Australian cricket team is? You might think we are in all sorts of trouble at 3 for 35 and you may wonder what the guys are thinking in the changing room. Well, they are all looking at golf magazines, talking about their golf handicaps or the latest shaft, or quizzing each other about whether they have tried this new golf ball yet. It is quite interesting, it becomes a healthy distraction. There were times we actually said on the ground, let’s knock these bastards over tonight, so that we could have a free day for

Over the summer you gained some experience playing in pro events. What did you learn? I played the Victorian Open and Victorian PGA and loved the experience. The Open was tough. Both days were 46 degrees. The greens were super-quick at Spring Valley. >>

I learnt so much from my playing partner, Ewen Walters. He opened with nine on the first hole after having five shots in the bunkers. Yet with dignity and class he held his head up and two putted and walked to the next tee. He scored a birdie on the next hole and ended up shooting two over. He could have easily shot 83 and thrown the toys out of the cot. I really enjoyed watching him battle through the round. I learnt that it was absolutely necessary to develop a sound pre-shot routine and to have the mental application to stick to it. What is more nerve-racking, facing Malcolm Marshall on a pitch that suits the quicks or standing on the first tee at a pro event? Forget the golf tournament, I am nervous as hell at pennant golf and if I am nervous as hell then I am playing the right sport. If I am feeling this and I am playing the butcher from Lancefield then this is game on. I love it. When that feeling stops I will find another sport.

Bionic is the only golf glove designed by a leading orthopedic hand surgeon.
ONLY BIONIC HAS AN ANATOMICAL PAD SYSTEM. Your fingers and palm have “peaks and valleys.” Bionic’s patented, anatomical pads (shown in orange) even out the surface of your hand, giving you a lighter grip and optimum contact between hand and club.
LIGHTEN YOUR GRIP FOR LONGER, MORE ACCURATE SHOTS With a conventional golf glove, you compensate for the unevenness of your hand by squeezing the club too hard. That tightens the muscles in your hand and arm. With the Bionic glove design, you instinctively adopt a lighter grip. Your new lighter, more relaxed Bionic grip will increase swing speed and add distance. Because your hand has more surface contact with the club, you have more control. This keeps the clubface from twisting, improving accuracy. Gloves are crafted from top-grade cabretta leather—they feel like a second skin. Available in men’s and women’s sizes and styles (left and right handed). Bionic Gloves are available at all Drummond Golf Stores. www.drummondgolf.com

Yering Meadows Golf Club
Macquarie Links International Golf and Country Club
Our first event for the 2009 national event series was held at Yering Meadows Golf Club in Victoria’s picturesque Yarra Valley. This private golf course development opened in June 2008 and is the new home of the former Croydon Golf Club (established in 1925), which has relocated it's facilities and operations to this site. The facility includes a 27-hole championship golf course designed by Ross Watson, with 18 holes currently open and the final 9 holes due for completion later this year. The 18-hole (par 72) 6408-metre course meanders its way through the gentle undulations of the surrounding valley and grassy wetlands, with the design also encompassing a 15-hectare walnut plantation on the site. This exciting course offers a challenging experience for golfers of all skill levels and we were delighted to have the opportunity to stage our first event for 2009 at Yering Meadows.
In keeping with tradition, our first event in New South Wales for the 2009 event series was held at Macquarie Links International Golf and Country Club. This was the fourth consecutive year we have returned to Macquarie Links and this annual event has continued to be a popular choice on the event calendar for Drummond Club members and their guests.
On the driving range pre-event, players enjoyed the opportunity to warm up and test the latest range of drivers from Titleist, Callaway and Wilson, and on the course Wilson also provided a demonstration of their latest range of DI9 and CI7 irons. A final field of 121 Drummond Club members and guests competed on the day and enjoyed fine weather for the round. Brett Ogle, ambassador for Drummond Golf and the Drummond Club, also joined us to celebrate the start of the 2009 event series, attend the final event presentations and assist in the fundraising activities for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Please see our report on pages 46-47 for further information on the event activities and funds raised in aid of the appeal.
Macquarie Links is a private residential golf community located on 150 hectares in south-west Sydney, just under an hour’s drive from Sydney’s CBD. The development includes an 18-hole championship course designed by Robin Nelson, who is renowned for other international golf course designs, including the Mauna Lani Golf Club (Big Island, Hawaii), the Mimosa Golf and Country Club (the Philippines) and the Bali Golf and Country Club (Bali, Indonesia). The Macquarie Links course layout and design combines traditional Scottish links-style golf with a contrasting Australian bush character and provides an enjoyable yet challenging golfing experience. The course was in excellent condition for our event and we enjoyed perfect autumn weather, with a final field of 113 players. Pre-event, players enjoyed product demonstrations by Wilson and Titleist on the driving range and a host of novelty competitions on course. After the round players enjoyed a BBQ buffet lunch prior to the official presentations. Congratulations to Reg Wells - Winner Overall Individual Handicap Division. Score 41 points (H/Cap 22)

The Cut Golf Club
Barossa Valley Golf Club
The Cut Golf Club is located in the coastal region of Mandurah, approximately 1½ hours’ drive south of Perth. This 18-hole championship course is regarded as one of Western Australia’s premier golf courses and was recently ranked within the top 20 golf courses in Australia by Australian Golf Digest (March 2008).
We travelled to the Barossa Valley for our first South Australian event for the 2009 event series. This region is not only renowned around the world for its premium wines, but also offers a great selection of quality golf courses.
Designed by James Wilcher (principal of Golf Design), the course captures majestic views over the Indian Ocean, with rolling fairways carved through steep undulating dunes. In particular, some regard The Cut’s back nine holes as among the best nine in Australia and for interstate visitors this course is a must on your golfing itinerary. This was the third annual Drummond Club event staged at The Cut and our first event in Western Australia for the 2009 event series. It sold out weeks in advance and attracted a capacity field of 139 Drummond Club members. Weather conditions were regarded as near perfect on the day, with a slight sea breeze and a top temperature of 37 degrees – ideal conditions for this challenging coastal links layout. Pre-event on the day, Callaway, Titleist and Wilson provided demonstrations of their latest range of drivers on the driving range, and at registration all players received a free sample of the new TaylorMade burner golf ball. Jarrod Mosely (Australian tour professional) from Drummond Golf Mandurah also joined us on course on the 4th hole where players had the opportunity to test their skills against him, trying to hit inside his shot for a chance to enter a lucky prize draw sponsored by the John Hughes Group. This novelty competition was part of various fund raising activities conducted in aid of the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. For further information on all fundraising at this event, please see our report on pages 46-47. Darren Tardrew from Drummond Golf Cannington, who came last in the Drummond Golf staff competition at the previous event, had the honour of wearing pink apparel on the day. Darren didn’t disappoint us with his ensemble of pink pants, shirt and cap. After a blistering day out on the course in 37 degrees, Darren did appear to have a pinkish tinge from head to toe. We’re not sure whether this was the result of sunburn or a serious hangover from the night before, but surprisingly he took out first place in the staff event at The Cut with a score of 33 points – well done, Darren! Congratulations to Aaron Newham - Winner Overall Individual Handicap Division. Score 40 points (H/Cap 13)
Our chosen venue was the Barossa Valley Golf Club, just under an hour’s drive from Adelaide’s CBD, which is regarded by many as one of the premier 18-hole golf courses in the Barossa Valley. This was the first occasion for the Drummond Club to host an event at this club and a strong field of 79 players competed. Pre-event on the driving range, players had the chance to warm up and test drive the latest range of R9 drivers from TaylorMade. Out on the course, Wilson also provided a demonstration of their new CI7 and DI9 irons. During the final event presentations local winery partner, Elderton Wines, provided a complimentary wine tasting for all event participants. Congratulations to Con Papadopolous - Winner Overall Individual Handicap Division. Score 44 points (H/Cap 10)

2009 Drummond Golf & Golf Magazine National Event Series
Sorrento Golf Club Our second event for Victoria this year was held at the Sorrento Golf Club, located at the southern end of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, just over an hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD. The club’s history dates back to 1907 when it was originally established as the Sorrento and Portsea Golf Club, the first golf course is this popular coastal holiday region. In 1909 it was renamed the Sorrento Golf Club and will celebrate is 100th anniversary this year. It is a private members’ club and is regarded as one of the most scenic and enjoyable courses on the Peninsula. At 5644 metres (par 70) the 18-hole course is set on a hilly sand and limestone base, with generous fairways surrounded by densely wooded plantations and bent grass greens. This was the first occasion for us to host an event at Sorrento Golf Club. The field size was restricted to a maximum 68 players with a rolling tee start, and the event sold out quickly, with many Drummond Club members keen to experience this historic course for the first time. The course was in excellent condition in preparation for the annual forthcoming Easter Pro Am. On the day we enjoyed perfect playing conditions, a warm and sunny 28 degrees with a gentle sea breeze, and without doubt it was a memorable experience for all. Our special thanks to Stumpy Gully Winery, one of the Mornington Peninsula’s best local wineries, for their support and event prizes. Congratulations to David Holmes - Winner Overall Individual Handicap Division. Score 40 points (H/Cap 12)

Putting Always three putting! Here is a great tip for touch and feel, which are the two key ingredients for consistent putting. From whatever distance you’re struggling with drop three balls down on the green, putt to the hole with your eyes closed - it’s as easy as that. I guarantee your lag putting will improve.

Good luck to all our competition entrants! Use these cryptic clues to unscramble the major golf event winners: 1. I’m not a duck and I don’t like hunting season (US Open winner).
2. I am not a dam, lake or a pond but still hold water (US Masters winner). 3. Products have this type of label on them (dual major winner). 4. I am a tiny bird (British Open winner).
Cypress Lakes Resort – Hunter Valley, NSW Thanks for helping on this one, Lee. We all had a great time. The Vintage was excellent and worthy of a few more visits. We went over to Belmont on Sunday, which is set in the sand dunes south of Newcastle. It is an excellent course and well worth a visit. The accommodation at Cypress was very good and we would recommend the resort to any one going to the Hunter Valley. Also the Irish pub got a workout. Thanks again. David Pulver, NSW

Girls Great Golf Getaway – Noosa Springs Resort, QLD Just wanted to send you a quick email to say thank you for a great couple of days last week at Noosa Springs. I am very grateful for the information and coaching from Nadene. I have been out this weekend to the range and spent about 2 hours practising my chipping and putting. I have the bug. Could you please send me the dates for the September sessions, as I am thinking about returning to refresh my skills. Thanks once again. Sonia Dewar, QLD
The Cut, WA I had a fantastic time over in WA and thoroughly enjoyed the day playing at the Cut (oh what a beautiful course). I enjoyed it so much that I have already booked a week to return to WA in June (10-17th) to coincide with the next Drummond Club event that is planned at The Vines on the 14th June and will be returning to play the Cut (that's how much I enjoyed it although the scorecard says otherwise). The day was very well organised and ran smoothly it seemed from a player's point of view. Thank you for the details on the Titleist driver. I look forward to attending more of the Drummond Golf Days. Geoff Cannane, QLD Noosa Springs Resort, QLD Just a note to say thank you for Sunday’s event at Noosa Springs Resort. You did a great job organising everything and I had such a good time that I will be sure to play in as many Queensland events as I can. So once again thank you very much. Looking forward to the next game. John Tate, QLD Sorrento Golf Club, VIC I would just like to thank you and your team for the generous prizes and the well-organised event. It has been a pleasure to participate and of course it was a lovely surprise to win the ladies division. Looking forward to another event in the near future. Thank you again. Drummond Golf is a proud supporter of the Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign www.drummondclub.com
Pikey, An inspiration to the end It is with the deepest sadness that I inform our Beyond the Fairways readers of the recent death of Australian professional golfer and dear friend Fiona Pike. Her inspirational battle against insidious melanoma came to a peaceful end during the evening of March 19, surrounded by her husband and immediate family. Fiona, 44, was one of the most liked members of the ALPG, LET and LPGA Tours. In past issues of our magazine we have featured Fiona’s plight to call on all golfers to take the necessary lifestyle steps to properly protect their skin against sun damage and to have their skin checked every three months. Fiona launched the Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign during the 2008 Australian Women’s Open at Kingston Heath. She actively promoted the cause of her campaign and returned to Melbourne in early February to attend the 2009 Australian Women’s Open at Metropolitan. Her campaign received wonderful support from fellow golfers Karrie Webb, Jane Crafter and Katherine Hull, who all gave their time to sign autographs in her Skin Cancer Awareness tent. Fiona’s message is as follows. “In 2005, shortly after retiring from professional golf, doctors found a deep skull-based tumor which was eventually diagnosed as melanoma. I have undergone a major operation to cut out much of the tumor, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The cancer has spread to other parts of my body. I don’t want any other golfer to experience this terrible disease. We are all at a significantly increased risk of skin cancer and we need to be vigilant in protecting our skin and checking for changes. It can only take 15 minutes to burn and a few burns in a lifetime to cause skin cancer, but usually cumulative exposure (including tanning) is the most common cause of skin cancer. This mostly preventable disease can be picked up early by checking your own skin and having any changes seen by a doctor, so please join my campaign and reduce the skin cancer risk.” Fiona will be remembered for her tenacious spirit and selfless nature, and also for the significant contribution she has made to creating awareness of the dangers of skin cancer to golfer’s everywhere. Her campaign will continue under the guidance of her family and close friends. On behalf of everyone at Drummond Golf we extend our sincere condolences to Fiona’s family and friends, and ask everyone to be more vigilant while spending time in the sun.
