I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sam, Lee and Ravi for all the hard work they have put in over the last four years to grow this from what was essentially a members’ newsletter to the great magazine that it is today.
The Drummond Club has now broken yet another record having eclipsed twenty thousand members last month. We look forward to welcoming new members from the Apple Isle as we have just started work on two stores in Tasmania that we hope to open some time in September. The stores in Hobart and Launceston will be our fortieth and forty-first stores with another two stores planned for New South Wales and a third store for Western Australia. We look forward to finishing 2008 with forty-four stores. This expansion has only been possible due to the support we have received from you, our valued
Drummond Golf now represents nearly fifty percent of the “off course” golf retail business in Australia and this means more buying power and fantastic deals for our members such as those contained in this edition. Our position as the largest golf retailer in the country has enabled us to put something back into golf. In the last twelve months we were proud sponsors of both the men’s and women’s Australian Opens and again in the next twelve months we have committed to both these events that are the pinnacle of the tournament circuit in Australia. We are also working with our golfing organisations to provide years four, five and six primary school children with a free introduction to golf. We feel this is a great initiative and can only assist with the fight against childhood obesity. It was with great interest that I read some research recently released by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in which they claim that regular golf was likely to add an extra five years life expectancy for the average golfer irrespective of gender. I hope you enjoy the many articles of golfing interest, instruction and the great offers contained in this edition. I wish all of you great golfing for the next twelve months. Kind Regards,
Drummond Club members, our dedicated hardworking franchisees and their staff that continue to lead our industry in customer service.

The British Open returns to Royal Birkdale Royal Birkdale in England’s north west will host this year’s British Open which will be played from 17 to 20 July. Synonymous with natural links style golf, The British Open is the oldest of the four major championships in men’s golf. Rugged coastlines, prevailing weather and general course conditions also make this event one of the most unique tournaments on the calendar. Golf enthusiasts once again eagerly await what the course and the weather will dish out to the world class field of 156 players. On Sunday afternoon, July 20, one of the world’s elite players will have the honour of raising the infamous ‘Claret Jug’ as the 2008 British Open Champion.
The Open History at Royal Birkdale
Royal Birkdale
The Open has been to Birkdale on eight previous occasions. 1954
Peter Thomson won the first of his five Open Championship titles.
1961
Arnold Palmer thrills British crowds winning his first Open title and in doing so was credited with starting the renaissance of The Open.
1965
Peter Thomson wins his fifth Open title, and his second at Royal Birkdale, a triumph that he described as “my greatest win”.
1971
Lee Trevino wins his first Open as little-known Taiwanese player Lu Liang-Huan, affectionately known as “Mr Lu,” comes within a stroke of an incredible victory.
1976
Johnny Miller defeats an unknown Spanish teenager called Severiano Ballesteros.
1983
Tom Watson wins his fifth Open, which is his eighth major title in nine seasons.
1991
Ian Baker-Finch produces a blistering streak of birdies in his final round to ease himself to victory.
1998
Mark O’Meara wins his second major in the space of three months after a tight play-off with Brian Watts.
This will be the ninth occasion the Club has hosted the event with the first time being back in 1954 when Australian Peter Thomson won the first of his five British Open titles. Of the past eight British Open’s staged at Royal Birkdale, Australian golfers have won three times. Peter Thomson in 1954 & 1965 and Ian Baker-Finch claimed victory in 1991. Tom Crow A life contribution to Golf
Interview by Sam Gole
In 2003, Australian Tom Crow, founder of Cobra Golf Inc, was awarded the prestigious Ernie Sabayrac Award by the PGA of America for “life contribution to the golf industry.” His remarkable story spans six decades and includes the development of the legendary “Baffler,” a utility wood that began an arms race by nearly all other golf companies to recreate. He initiated the three-wedge system, created the first extra-length driver and reintroduced graphite shafts to the market for lighter weight clubs. As a player Tom excelled. construction of a pipeline which supplies the course with 160 mega litres of recycled water each year. This supply of A class recycled water is used to irrigate the golf course and landscaped areas of the surrounding residential community. The supply of recycled water aims to droughtproof the course and keep playing surfaces green and lush all year round. The course also uses a series of on-site wetlands to collect rainwater run-off that can also be used for irrigation purposes. Jane Bell said that incorporating environmentallyfriendly features into the golf course had been a priority from day one. “Not only does the supply of recycled water ensure that the course is always looking fantastic, importantly it produces a number of environmental benefits,” Ms Bell said. “We are effectively self-sufficient with regards to water needed for irrigation without the need to tap into the community’s water supplies. In this time of drought and water efficiency, we wanted to ensure that we could provide the best possible playing surfaces to our members and guests – but in an environmentally sustainable manner. The foresight involved in securing the supply of recycled water and overall environmental focus is a credit to the developers of the course, Medallist Developments,” she said.

Golfer
Brett Ogle Behind the Face of Drummond Golf Interview by Sam Gole
On the course his ball striking was often described as being on a par with that of Greg Norman. From the commentary box and golf related programs he entertains us with his quirky wit and a unique insight into golf. He is the ambassador and face of Australia’s largest golf retailer, Drummond Golf and one of Australian golf’s most charismatic figures. He is, of course, Brett Ogle, or affectionately known as “The Bogle”. However like a round of 18 holes, his journey both on and off the golf course has comprised of exhilarating highs and soul destroying lows.
“I played with my mate’s clubs and thought it was alright.

But once I got into it I really loved it. Smashing the ball, just creaming it was an awesome feeling.” Brett quickly established a name for himself and climbed through the amateur ranks until an incident with the NSW state body officials nearly saw him vanish from the sport forever. He recalls the incident: “This particular year I was playing great, just got my license, I was 17. Coming up from Goulburn to the trials in Sydney I played really good, didn’t

I almost gave up golf completely because of the attitude of those old blokes not giving a young guy an opportunity.” A tumultuous period that included drinking, partying, playing snooker, living on the dole and a life without direction followed. He had abandoned the game he loved and his dream to one day play against the best and to be one of the best. Fortunately his resolve was deeper. He climbed out the wasteful life he was leading and decided to head back to Sydney and resurrect his passion for the game. He moved in with David Merriman and his wife, got a job and went

Brett found his career forging forward once again and this time, not deterred by the elders in the national amateur organization who believed he would not make it, turned professional in 1985 and thus began a successful touring career that earned him victories around the world. Many golfers make the mistake of assuming they need to swing faster to make the ball fly further or swing slower causing deceleration to make it fly shorter.
One of the main challenges golfers find with pitching is distance control, often flying the ball well past the hole or leaving it short of the pin. The first priority is to establish a sound technique. Please see the other page for pitching fundamentals. Assuming your technique is on track you can focus your attention on striking your pitches to the distance your require.
”
Set out three or more markers on the practice fairway and begin playing shots to each of them. Maintain the same
swing tempo for each shot and simply change the length
of your backswing and follow through in order to alter the distance of your shots. Many golfers make the mistake of assuming they need to swing faster to make the ball fly
further or swing slower causing deceleration to make it fly shorter. Use a clock face as a reference point.

10 Reasons
why golf is good for your children and family 1. A Game For All Both males and females of all body shapes and heights can effectively participate in golf. Your children do not require a specific physique.
2. Longevity Played by practically all ages, golf is a unique sport your children can begin now and continually enjoy for many years.
3. Versatility Golf can be played individually or in groups. Your children do not need to rely on a team of numbers to participate.
4. Equality The handicap system allows all levels of golfers to compete or play socially on common ground. The level of ability or experience of your playing partners does not impact on your game.
5. Healthy Associated with many sports is the significant risk of injury via body movement, contact or collision. Golf offers a low risk alternative for a healthy balanced lifestyle. A round of golf can mean walking more than six kilometres. Recent studies also indicate that golfers can live longer.
6. Sportsmanship Golf is often described as the “gentlemen’s game” and is admired for its integrity.
7. Behaviour Golfers must adhere to strict etiquette and behaviour. The game is personally challenging and character building.
8. Tranquillity Golf courses are generally a serene environment and provide an escape from the stresses of day to day life. A few hours on mother nature’s own ground allows the body and mind an opportunity to replenish.
9. Sociability Playing golf is a great way to meet new people, share experiences and spend quality time with friends and family.
10. Lifestyle Golfers are presented with an opportunity to travel to amazing destinations across Australia and overseas, creating wonderful lifestyle experiences.
10 Ways
to best assist children to play and enjoy golf, in the early days 1. Make it Fun Introduce games and forget about scoring.
2. Suitable equipment Make sure you purchase junior clubs designed to suit them. Begin with a 7 iron and putter, then add a lofted wood and wedge as your child progresses.
3. Start around the green Begin with putting and chipping. Children like to see results quickly and this will build their confidence.
4. Go to a golf course Play on a golf course so they can feel comfortable in the surrounds. Once on the course, you can shorten the holes by allowing children to tee off down the fairway.
5. Discuss etiquette & explain safety rules The sooner they are aware of where to stand and what to do the better it is better for both you and your children.
6. Play with them Children learn from watching. Adults, try teeing off with a 5 iron or 7 iron as your children won’t relate to you smashing the driver 250 plus metres. Go to your home club’s family golf days.
7. Bring a friend Encourage them to invite a friend. This also helps them to feel as though golf is accepted amongst their peers
8. Encourage the do’s and reduce the don’ts Focus on what they do well. Children will learn from their mistakes as much as they do from what we teach them.
9. Work on one fundamental at a time Slow but permanent improvement is the aim. Introduce him or her to a professional golf coach once your child expresses the desire to continue with the sport.
10. R emember why you are there The experience is about spending quality time together.

Thank goodness times have changed. The major brands have made a significant investment in the future of the game by developing a range of golf products designed to suit the physical requirements of our children. Today, parents can purchase junior golf clubs made of varying lengths to suit their varied heights, graphite shafts for better weight balance, thinner grips for their smaller hand size and forgiving club heads for more encouraging results. In my opinion, today it is easier than ever to enjoy a game of golf with our children. Better products and an understanding within the industry that juniors should be encouraged to participate have created a more supportive environment.

Bionic is the only golf glove designed by a leading orthopedic hand surgeon.
ONLY BIONIC HAS AN ANATOMICAL PAD SYSTEM. Your fingers and palm have “peaks and valleys.” Bionic’s patented, anatomical pads (shown in orange) even out the surface of your hand, giving you a lighter grip and optimum contact between hand and club.
LIGHTEN YOUR GRIP FOR LONGER, MORE ACCURATE SHOTS With a conventional golf glove, you compensate for the unevenness of your hand by squeezing the club too hard. That tightens the muscles in your hand and arm. With the Bionic glove design, you instinctively adopt a lighter grip. Your new lighter, more relaxed Bionic grip will increase swing speed and add distance. Because your hand has more surface contact with the club, you have more control. This keeps the clubface from twisting, improving accuracy. Gloves are crafted from top-grade cabretta leather—they feel like a second skin. Available in men’s and women’s sizes and styles (left and right handed). Bionic Gloves are available at all Drummond Golf Stores. www.drummondgolf.com

Callaway F T i-brid Irons
The FT-i Driver set a new standard in driver performance. The new FT-i Squareway Woods will do the same in fairway woods. With a MOI approaching that of Callaway Golf’s best-selling drivers, the FT-i Squareway Woods provide unprecedented accuracy, forgiveness and stability for longer, straighter shots off the tee or from the fairway. The giant leap in MOI is a result of proprietary Fusion Technology that seamlessly combines a stainless steel face, sole and body with a carbon composite crown, allowing discretionary weight to be strategically placed in the extreme corners of the uniquely shaped clubhead. The result is the most forgiving fairway wood Callaway Golf has ever created.
The new FT i-brids are the latest in a long legacy of innovation to help make the game a little easier. Incorporating Fusion Technology, the superior weight-shifting science created by Callaway Golf, the set features the new i-brid clubs that are designed to replace hard-to-hit long irons, and super gameimprovement mid and short irons for the ultimate in forgiveness and playability. putters
T
he one club in your bag that does more work than any other. Yet very few golfers invest the time and money when selecting a new putter. The technology in putters has changed dramatically in the last 5 years with differing ‘face insert’ materials, radical ‘alignment systems’ and ‘face balance’ heads. Face inserts have helped reduce the ‘skidding’ effect and improve the roll on the ball which in turn keeps the ball online better. Face inserts also help with giving the golfer added feel. Added feel helps you to control the distance on your putts better. Alignment systems have helped to fix a problem that many golfers suffer from and that is ‘putting’ the ball on the intended line. The most famous example of such a putter is the ‘Odyssey 2 ball’. By adding two ball shapes to the head of the putter and in conjunction with the ball to be putted creates an imaginary line, which simply requires the golfer to align this with the intended line. Many other brands offer this technology in differing ways. Face balance putters help with keeping the head square at impact. This is achieved with specially weighted heads and / or purpose built putter shafts that help swing the putter like a pendulum. Pendulum is a weight hung from a fixed point so that it can swing freely back and forth under the influence of gravity thus helping the golfer to keep a natural stroke and the head square at impact. The above explanations are brief, for more information visit your local Drummond Golf store and talk to a friendly sales consultant. They love this stuff.

TaylorMade Rossa Spider If ever there was a putter that epitomised the advancement in putter technology the new Rossa Spider from TaylorMade is it. Steel wire-frame head construction with light aluminium core shifts extra weight to the perimeter, increasing the MOI (moment of inertia) to promote remarkably consistent distance on off-centre hits. TaylorMade’s innovative Movable Weight Technology (MWT) allows substantial weight to be concentrated in areas far from the face, this helps shift the CG to the back of the putter head for better stability. With the 14 tightly positioned grooves to promote a more efficient forward spin for reduced skidding and a smoother roll. To help you impart a pure stroke on your putts this putter would be hard to go past.
Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport The Scotty Cameron Studio Select family of precision milled 303 Stainless Steel Newport-style putters features bold red tour graphics, an improved high toe profile, and heel & toe circular sole weights that allow for multiple length options in each model. The circular heel-toe weights provide increased stability by reducing head rotation on off-centre impacts for a larger sweet spot. The factory adjustable weights are set to provide the proper headweight-to-shaft length combination, but can be customised to make the head feel heavier to suit specific putting green conditions. The improved high toe profile of Studio Select helps eliminate the tendency to raise the toe at address thereby causing the player to aim left of target. Studio Select also features a stepless shaft for a clean look at address and soft but solid feel, as well as a new red Cameron cord grip.

Scientific Putting Technology
From recent research in the US, the Carbite ZGB-OS Blade and ZGM-OS Mallet Putters finished in the top four. Carbite feels that visible technology is very important in any golf product. At first you will notice the very attractive look, and just as important, the many high-tech features. The head weights are 355 grams, which will give you great clubhead feel through the stroke! The beadblast, no-glare finish blends well with the precise placement of copper and gold-like tungsten inserts that give this putter a very cool look. The placement of all these metals gives strong stability at impact and you will notice a very solid feel and excellent feedback. Centre, heel or toe hits will stay on line and roll the same distance.
A scientific alignment system has been built into the SPT putters without you even noticing. At address all three lines on top of the SPT putter should be visible for proper alignment. This simple alignment aid will lead to much more consistent putting.
Odyssey White Hot Tour Tour professionals have every element of their putters customised to their exact preferences. The shape, insert, headweight and shaft merge flawlessly to fit their needs. N
othing beats a well struck drive that goes long, high and straight. Technology has come a long way with helping golfers achieve this with 460cc wide body Titanium heads, maximum COR, low CG and high MOI but what does all this mean. ‘Golf Tech Talk’ can be pretty confusing, even to the accomplished golfer. The following is a brief explanation of the terminology to help you better understand the golf tech talk commonly used. 460cc is the maximum legal size that you can build a golf club head under the USGA and R&A rules. CC refers to cubic centimetres and 460 refers to amount of water that is displaced in cubic centimetres when a golf club head is placed in a container of water, as an example. Wide body is a reference to the new generation of drivers where the crown (top) of the club has been flattened to make the face shallower and to move more weight to back of the club making the club more forgiving and easier to launch the ball(to get it up in the air). Titanium is extremely light and very strong and as a material for golf club heads is ideal. It allows manufacturers to make heads bigger without compromising the structure, balance and the strength of the club. Some manufactures take this to the next level by adding graphite to the crown (top) of the club. As graphite is lighter than Titanium this gives them extra weight (referred to as ‘discretionary weight’ by most manufacturers) that they can use to insert in other areas of the head to improve forgiveness.
COR is an acronym for “Coefficient of Restitution”. Coefficient of restitution is a measurement of the energy loss or retention when two objects collide. 0.830 is the maximum legal amount of COR a club head can have under the USGA and R&A rules. This means that when the club head strikes the ball, there cannot be more than an 83-percent transfer of the energy of the head to the ball. CG is an acronym for ‘Centre of Gravity’ and in simple terms refers to the balance point of the object or in this case the club head. Altering the balance point in the head, by shifting weight to differing parts, will influence the forgiveness and more importantly the trajectory (ball flight) of the shot. The simple rule is the lower the CG the higher the trajectory and vice versa. MOI is an acronym for ‘Moment of Inertia’. MOI, in simple terms, is a property of physics that indicates how easy or difficult it will be to set any object in motion about a defined axis of rotation. In golf marketing terms MOI refers to the level of forgiveness a clubhead offers on off-centre hits. The higher the MOI, less the club head will twist on off-centre hits and less distance will be lost. So the higher the MOI the better it is for most golfers. The above explanations are brief, for more information visit your local Drummond Golf store and talk to a friendly sales consultant. They love this stuff.
Callaway iMix Out on Tour, golf clubs are dynamic, allowing every pro to have the ideal driver setup for specific course conditions. So Callaway Golf asked: “How can we bring this level of flexibility and choice to every player?” I-MIX Technology is the answer. Now you can quickly and easily customise your driver by selecting a clubhead and shaft to meet the challenge of the day. Choose from 22 FT-i or FT-5 clubheads with i-MIX Technology and more than 70 of the most popular shafts in the game for more than 1600 possible i-MIX combinations and take command of your game every time you play.

TaylorMade Tour Burner The dual crown, weighted powerbase and modern ‘wide body’ head shape, in the Tour Burner driver, shifts more weight lower, deeper and further back in the club head for a precision-placed CG. This helps promote a higher launch angle and lower spin rate for increased carry and added distance. Inverted Cone Technology delivers an expanded COR for consistently long drives on off-centre shots.
Ping G10 Ping engineers optimised the G10 Driver’s crown, sole and face structure interaction to ensure maximum energy transfer to the ball. The 460cc club head features a larger profile with a taller face and deeper crown that produces a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and increased ball velocity. Ping’s patented variable face thickness technology produces a thin, highly responsive hitting surface for increased ball velocity and greater consistency across the face.
Titleist 907 Titleist introduces its most technologically advanced offerings yet with the 907D1 and 907D2 models. Titleist seeks to reshape golfers’ games with the 460cc limit geometry, high MOI triangular design of the 907D1, and the advanced traditional geometry, enhanced MOI of the 907D2. The 907 drivers are designed with all the core performance deliverables that have made Titleist the driver choice of Tour players, PGA club professionals, top amateurs and serious golfers at every level of competitive golf. The highest inertia Titleist driver ever, the 907D1 offers increased distance with forgiveness, producing a straighter ball flight. The 907D2 provides enhanced MOI for increased distance with workability, allowing the better player the ability to produce a draw or fade. Another primary difference is in the appearance. The 907D1 is a market forward, limit geometry, triangle shape, while the 907D2 is a traditional round profile.

This is your game at a new level. This is the power to lower your scores. The larger profile, 460cc titanium driver with a taller face and deeper crown for a higher MOI and increased ball speed. The high-launching G10 irons, designed with low toe weighting and a new cavity shape for more accuracy and consistency. The players-sized i10, a compact head that combines control and forgiveness into one. The low-profile fairway woods, engineered with a sloped crown and a long, shallow face for high-launching performance. And the versatile hybrid, with its large internal weight pad that positions the CG for higher-flying, softer-landing shots.

Callaway F Ti The Callaway Golf FT-i Driver represents a quantum leap in driver design. To exploit Callaway’s proprietary Fusion Technology — the superior weight-shifting science developed by Callaway Golf that uses multiple materials in clubhead construction — the design demanded a new shape. With the revolutionary 460cc Complete Inertial Design, the FT-i Driver pushes the boundaries of shape and of the rules. This design precisely positions weight to the extreme corners of the clubhead, producing the highest Moment of Inertia of any Callaway Golf driver, resulting in unparalleled forgiveness. Callaway’s largest, most robust CT/VFT Titanium cup face is designed to the legal limit as defined by the USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in increased ball speed, distance and forgiveness.
Wilson Staff Spine Powered by its innovative crown super structure and unique perimeter weighting, the new Spine driver explores today’s new driver geometry, generating high MOI with explosively long and accurate results. Weight has been scooped out of the crown and lowered for higher launch angle and lower driver spin. As a result of superior stability by the unique clubhead design the standard shaft offering is 1” longer to maximise distance whilst maintaining control.
Cobra LV4 Cobra’s most technologically advanced driver, the LV4, offers maximum legal limits for inertia (5700-5900), volume (460cc), COR (.830) and dimensions (5”x4.95”). Engineers have shaved enough weight off the crown to be able to locate a heavy tungsten weight low and deep in the head to help prevent the head twisting with off-centre hits. The LV4 driver is available in three different models, aimed at matching your ball speed to your driver.

PowerBilt Citation The PowerBilt Citation FZ1 Driver is designed with optimum horizontal bulge and vertical roll for consistent ball trajectory, regardless of impact location. Twointernal weights placed in the rear of the club create a deep CG to minimise backspin for greater ball carry (less back spin equals less resistance as the ball flies through the air). Internal and external weight distribution developed by PowerBilt’s R&D team creates maximum MOI, make this one of the most stable drivers on the market. And stability means less club twisting for more accurate drives. The Citation FZ1 driver has a two-level multi-finish sole. Its face is constructed from ultra strong, lightweight aerospace grade 15-3-3-3 beta titanium for maximum energy transfer (COR) from clubface to ball. That helps players get every metre possible out of their driver.
Callaway BB460 The Big Bertha 460 Driver is designed with a geometry close to the dimensional limit set by the USGA/R&A for length and width. This enables Callaway Golf engineers to incorporate a 460cc head design with a shallower face, flatter shape and the highest Moment of Inertia ever in a Callaway Golf all-titanium head — resulting in longer and straighter off-centre hits. In addition, the Stretched Head Design allows the CG to be positioned deeper within the clubhead to achieve optimum ball flight and maximum forgiveness. The Consistent Alignment Sole helps eliminate the head from rocking back and forth and the Correct Alignment Stripe, a white line running across the top line, helps golfers square the clubface at address.
TaylorMade CGB Max CGB Max continues with the highly successful TaylorMade Movable Weight technology. By altering the weights the head can be customised to suit individual needs. The distinctive triangular head shape helps position the CG further back in the head which makes it easier to launch the ball for added carry and more distance. Inverted Cone Technology delivers an expanded COR for consistently long drives on off-centre shots.

TaylorMade Burner Like all modern ‘wide body’ drivers the TaylorMade Burner incorporates a CG that is low and further back in the club head that makes it easier to launch for better carry and more distance. Combined with TaylorMade’s patent Inverted Cone Technology, which delivers consistently better distance on offcentre shots, this is a good example of a modern driver at an affordable price.
Cougar M3 The Cougar M3 Driver features a deep wide body shaped head manufactured with a Forged Titanium Body. Combined with a Composite Carbon Crown and Toe, the use of Multi Composite materials allows Cougar to reposition weight and lowering the CG and produce a higher MOI. This creates a larger hitting zone on the club face combining to increase forgiveness and distance. The new Plasma welding technique used in the Cougar M3 manufacturing process helps to increase strength of the head without increasing weight.
Cobra Speed LD The Cobra SPEED range of drivers matches the shaft, loft and head to the players ball/swing speed for a happy union. Designed for the fast-ball-speed player, which most golfers are, the all-new Speed LD F driver delivers an impressive 5000+ MOI for greater distance, accuracy and consistency. And the square alignment and precisely tuned clubhead and shaft generate high launch with a slight draw bias, giving your customers a much higher level of performance. Designed for moderate-ball-speed players with a tendency to hit a fade or slice, the Speed LD M Driver maximises distance on hits across the entire clubface. With the largest face on the market, the Speed LD M is forgiving, which, combined with extra-high launch and a draw bias design, provides increased distance.

You wouldn’t putt with a dirty golf ball, so why hit with dirty clubs?
Cleaning Your Clubs
Why - Dirty, gritty club heads cause inconsistent ball flights, spin and control. Having clean club heads and grooves helps maximise distance and spin. How - To help keep club heads clean during a round of golf, you should always carry a wet/damp towel with you. Also look at investing in a cleaning brush. The brush will help you remove dirt and grit from the grooves.
Cleaning Your Grips Why - Having slippery grips might lead to the club twisting in your hand during your golf swing. Try to keep your grips as clean and tacky (slight stickiness for gripping) as possible. Remember this is what you need to hold onto in order to swing the golf club. Dirty/slippery grips will affect the way you perform on the golf course. How - Wet a towel with warm water and wipe/scrub the grips. The more you clean it the tackier it should become. There are some tell tale signs you need some new grips; if the grips become shiny and by cleaning the grip the shine doesn’t come off, or if the dimples or lines are starting to fade on the grip.
50 | Beyond the Fairways - Winter / Spring 2008
”
If you are changing your grips there are some things to consider. • Drummond Golf carries a large selection of grips. Grips start from $5.95 each for a rubber grip (fitted), $13.95 each for a full cord grip (fitted) and $29.95 each for a leather grip (fitted). • Rubber grips are good for players who like a soft feeling grip with good hold. • Full cord grips are extremely good in the wet. The cord weaved into the grip provides extra hold. Good for players who play all year round or players who sweat during their round. • Leather grips are good for players who do not like to wear a glove or have problems with vibrations shock. Leather provides a ‘soft as butter’ feel and are extremely tacky. All Drummond Golf stores offer extensive repair services.

Western Australia is a year round golfing destination with a warm Mediterranean style climate and with such a great selection of golf courses available, will be a memorable golfing adventure. Then there are the pristine white sandy beaches, which are arguably some of the best in the world. You can explore some of Australia’s best wine-growing regions such as the renowned Margaret River and Swan Valley regions. Enjoy a deep-sea fishing trip off the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean, or for the punters there is Perth’s Burswood Casino for a night out. A day trip to the historic seaport of Fremantle also offers great sightseeing, shopping an extensive selection of quality restaurants and cafes with the local seafood a prominent feature on most menus. A tip, try Fremantle’s “chilli mussels” - a real treat for your taste buds, and of course accompanied by some fine west Aussie wine. See page 58 for our sample 7 night itinerary.
Joondalup Resort Country Club Boulevard, Connolly
Just a short stroll from the club house you can enjoy the superb accommodation and resort facilities on-site at Joondalup Resort. Set amongst a tranquil garden setting, the resort offers 70 luxuriously appointed rooms and suites with private balconies offering spectacular views. The rooms are spacious with elegant furnishings and offer double or twin share accommodation, and interconnecting rooms are also available, ideal for groups and families. Located just 25 minutes north of Perth CBD and minutes from the white sandy beaches of the “Sunset Coast”, is the prestigious 27-hole Joondalup Resort. Following our 2008 WA state final in May this year, I took the opportunity to visit Joondalup Resort once again. The Drummond Club has held two previous club events at Joondalup Resort including our 2007 WA state final last year and is a popular choice with our Drummond Club members. Regarded as one of Australia’s finest golf courses, this awardwinning venue has been voted Australia’s No 1 resort course for the last six consecutive years (2003 – 2008). Few courses anywhere in the world offer such dramatic contrasts, natural scenic beauty and the sheer golfing challenge of the 27-hole championship course which features three, 9-hole courses – Dune, Lake and Quarry courses. Designed by the internationally renowned golf architect, Robert Trent Jones Junior, the course presents a tough, uncompromising layout, featuring great variation in setting and style. This spectacular course sweeps across dense bushland, cuts through steep limestone quarries and skirts picturesque lakes, offering surprises and challenges for golfers of all skill levels at almost every turn. One minute you’re playing an approach shot beneath a 30-metre limestone cliff, the next you’re adapting to the fresh ocean breeze on an undulating links style fairway. www.drummondclub.com

Araluen Golf Resort Country Club Avenue, Roleystone
The Vines Resort and Country Club was established as one of WA’s first resort courses in the picturesque Swan Valley and is located just 35 minutes from the heart of Perth. This venue boasts two world-class championship golf courses, “Ellenbrook” and “The Lakes”. Course architects, Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, have skillfully crafted two uniquely different golf courses that have received continued acclaim as one of the best in WA and within the Top 10 resort courses in Australia. Set amongst a distinctive WA rural landscape, the unique course features are the undulating fairways, dramatic lakes and the abundance of natural West Australian flora and fauna. The two layouts will offer golfers a challenging experience with exquisitely sculptured bunkers, grassy hollows and well-placed water hazards. The Vines Resort and Country Club has hosted several major championship tournaments in the past such as The Heineken Classic (1993 - 2001), Lexus Cup in 2007 and the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2006, one of the Asia Pacific region’s premier championship golf events. Announced just last month was the news that The 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic will return again to The Vines Resort and Country Club (February 19 - 22, 2009) and will be the 5th occasion for the event to be staged in Australia. The Novotel Vines Resort has also been a popular choice as host venue for several of our past WA Drummond Club events, and this year our 2008 WA Drummond Club State Final was held on the “Lakes Course”. A capacity field of 140 Drummond Club members including several interstate members visiting from the eastern states enjoyed the opportunity to play this championship course. NB: You can see a full wrap-up on the event and final event results in our “Event News” section in this issue – page 60. The accommodation facilities at The Novotel Vines Resort are also first-class, and we had the opportunity to experience the resort’s facilities first-hand during our stay for the WA state final. The Novotel Vines Resort offers 103 resort rooms and 54 condominiums (2 or 3 bedrooms). The rooms are spacious with contemporary furnishings and offer private balconies overlooking the golf course, resort vineyard or central courtyard. Guests can enjoy relaxing in the heated outdoor spa and 24 metre outdoor swimming pool. 56 | Beyond the Fairways - Winter / Spring 2008
Travelling south on your way to the Mandurah region, and just 40 minutes drive from Perth’s CBD, you will find Araluen Golf Resort set amongst the picturesque hills of Roleystone. The scenery is breathtaking as you wind your way up through the surrounding valleys and hillside, your senses are excited by the contrasting landscape and the unique golfing experience that awaits you. Designed by the late Roger Mackay and Michael Coate, this 18-hole championship course is bordered by state forest on the south, west and east borders and by the Canning River on the north border, and features wide sloping fairways with large undulating greens, and strategically placed water hazards and bunkers – a challenging golfing experience for golfers of all skill levels. Currently the course is undergoing extensive renovation and during a recent visit, I caught up with the two new course superintendents, Gordon Heron and David McPharlin. In just three months since their appointment you can see the extraordinary amount of work going into Araluen and I asked Gordon and David about some of the recent challenges they have faced and their future plans for Araluen. “When we started we had five days of water left in the dam so turning off the irrigation system was a good starting point. Watering on a need to basis in conjunction with “Benign Technologies” wetting agents blue and yellow, we have now managed to fill our irrigation dam to 100%. Our main priority is to get the existing 18 holes back to their former glory as a top three course in WA. Just recently we had the designer Michael Coates out for a day of exciting and hard talking discussions. With a drive around the www.drummondclub.com
course we had many ideas of redesign put down on paper to adjust some of our “weaker” holes for future developments. We also put minor changes into some of our better holes for better playability and fairness to the golfer,” explained Gordon and David. Araluen Golf Resort is ideal for a golfing “day trip” whether you’re based in Perth or Mandurah and there are plans currently underway for future accommodation on-site also. Other facilities include a 300 metre long driving range, two short game practice areas, and one with a practice bunker. The clubhouse has a restaurant on site, with a large western-facing balcony that offers stunning views over the golf course and valleys below, a great spot for a BBQ lunch and drinks with friends. Secret Harbour Golf & Country Club Secret Harbour Boulevard, Secret Harbour
The Cut was recently ranked WA’s number 1 golf course and within the top 20 in Australia by Australian Golf Digest (March 2008), and has gained recognition as being one of Australia’s premier coastal golf courses. The Drummond Club has hosted two previous club events at The Cut, attracting capacity fields. With on course accommodation now available, The Cut will be the perfect place to base yourself in the heart of some of Australia’s premier Golf Courses and on the door step to the infamous food and wine of the south west region of Australia. The Cut has become renowned for the sensational food in The Mediterranean Restaurant as well as the great value casual dining. Designed by James Wilcher (Principal of Golf Design), The Cut’s Indian Ocean vistas with waves rolling in just metres away will captivate you. Its rolling fairways, draped over and through steeply undulating dunes, will entice you and the challenge to craft a new repertoire of shots will draw you back time after time. The outward nine holes meander past the resort hotel site, www.drummondclub.com
Another popular choice with Drummond Club members, Secret Harbour is located just 10 minutes from Mandurah’s township. Secret Harbour offers 18 superbly designed holes with the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding coastline. Here you will experience a traditional Scottish links course with small pot bunkers, rolling fairways amid the natural sand dunes and beautiful ocean views. Course designer Graham Marsh has crafted the course such that the average golfer will find it enjoyable and offers a challenging experience for the advanced golfer. Each hole presents several tee options depending on wind conditions and the player’s ability. The beautifully manicured rolling fairways are pitted with well positioned pot bunkers and bordered by lush fescue grass. Signature holes to be remembered are the 8th and 17th. The 8th is a shorter par 3 which requires a shot to be hit over water and then stop on a dime on the short and wide green, which is surrounded by pot bunkers and long grass. Distance control is

critical on this hole, however a good shot is greatly rewarded and the mediocre shot, recoverable. The most memorable hole on the golf course is the 17th where a wide fairway is littered with pot bunkers, and comes to an abrupt halt where a lake sits. Across the other side of the lake sits the smallish, two-tier green, which is surrounded by pot bunkers on both sides, and hollows followed immediately by the bush behind the green.

2008 VIC STATE FINAL
2008 WA STATE FINAL
Tuesday 22nd April 2008
Sunday 18th May 2008
Eynesbury Golf Club
The Vines Novotel Resort
Eynesbury, Melbourne
Swan Valley
The newly established “Eynesbury Golf Club” was our chosen host venue for the 2008 Victorian state final, located approximately 45 minutes north-west of Melbourne’s CBD. Designed by Graham Marsh, this 18-hole championship golf course is set amongst a unique and distinctive Australian bushland setting with 100 year-old gum trees that line the fairways. An original 1840’s heritage listed homestead with restaurant and cafe on site, also compliments the unique design and character at Eynesbury Golf Club and was the ideal venue for our Victorian State Final.
Our 2008 WA state final attracted another capacity field of 140 Drummond Club members. Fine weather conditions prevailed on the day and players enjoyed the opportunity to compete on the “Lakes Course” – one of two 18-hole championship courses at the prestigious Vines Resort. The Vines is one of WA’s first resort courses and is located in the picturesque “Swan Valley”, one of Western Australia’s oldest wine growing regions, just 30 minutes drive from Perth’s CBD.
Brett Ogle, Ambassador for Drummond Golf, joined over 100 competitors on the day and played the competition round with the lucky winner of our “Drummond Golf / Flexiway” (VIC) Christmas Promotion. Pre-event, Ping Titleist, Cobra and Wilson provided product demonstrations, and players could also test the latest Oakley eyewear and Sureshot GPS units out on course. Angostura joined us on the 1st tee, providing a refreshing sample of “Lemon, Lime & Bitters” for everyone. McLaren Vale III Associates (Wine Partner and Sponsor) kicked off the celebrations with a complimentary wine-tasting for all players promoting their renowned “Four Play” and “Squid Ink” wines and special offers exclusive to Drummond Club members. After the round, a sumptuous BBQ buffet lunch was provided and a great day was enjoyed by all. DIVISION

The “Lakes Course” was in excellent condition and offered a challenging experience for all players with the course set-up from the Optus Pro Am held earlier in the week. Pre-event Callaway and Titleist provided product demonstrations on the putting green and players also received a FREE sample pack of the new TaylorMade “Burner Balls”. The latest range of Oakley eyewear and Sureshot GPS units were also available to trial on course. Club partners and event sponsors, Jeff Hughes Group sponsored a host of prizes on the day, and McLaren Vale III Associates provided players with complimentary glasses of wine to sample the latest release of their “Four Play” and “Squid Ink” wines. Nerrissa Waite from Oakley joined us for the final event presentations and conducted a “Sports Quiz” to test the off-course skills of the players. The WA staff competition was another highlight of the day, with Lindsay Taylor (losing staff winner from the previous event) choosing a “pink” chiffon skirt with matching shirt for his glamorous appearance on-course. The mantle of the prestigious title for the “lowest staff score” has now been handed to Rob Vinciullo and the challenge is on for the next WA event scheduled at Araluen Golf Resort on Sunday 5th October 2008. Queensland’s Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, was the venue for the first Drummond Club QLD social event for the 2008 season. This 27-hole golf resort with the 331-room Crowne Plaza Hotel onsite is regarded as one of the finest resort courses in QLD and the 18-hole championship course will offer a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels. On the day, we enjoyed perfect QLD sunshine and pre-event players had the opportunity to testdrive the latest products from Ping, Titleist, Cobra, TaylorMade and Cleveland.
The first SA social event for 2008 was held at Lake Albert Golf Club, located approximately 1½ hours drive from Adelaide’s CBD in the township of Meningie, gateway to the Coorong National Park. This 18-hole golf course is regarded as one of SA’s finest rural golf courses with picturesque tree-lined fairways and an abundance of natural wildlife creates an enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. Players travelled by coach departing from Drummond Golf Adelaide, with approximately 45 Drummond Club members and their guests including social members from the “Pin High Social Club”. Settlers Run
Sea Temple Golf & Country Club
Cranbourne, Melbourne
Port Douglas, Far North QLD
Settlers Run Golf and Country Club is one of Melbourne’s newest golf course and residential community developments and features an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Greg Norman. Located just 45 minutes drive from Melbourne’s CBD, Settlers Run is a Par 72 (6607metre) course set amongst picturesque surrounds with views of the city, Dandenong ranges, tranquil rural countryside and lies adjacent to the 363 acre Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens.
Our annual far north Queensland event hosted by Craig Thomson (Drummond Golf Cairns), was held this year at the prestigious Sea Temple Golf and Country Club located in the popular tourist destination of Port Douglas, QLD. The course was presented in magnificent condition with a stiff easterly wind providing a good test of golf for all competitors. With a full field of 72 players the day started with a demonstration session on the driving range that allowed all players the opportunity to try and test out their skills with the latest equipment from TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Titleist and Powerbilt.
A capacity field of 110 Drummond Club members and guests thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play this private championship course, and a great day out was enjoyed by all. Prior to presentations, players enjoyed sampling the latest wines from McLaren Vale III Associates and a host of novelty prizes for individual and team stableford competitions. DIVISION

Once out on the course the trials and tribulations were not only on the golf holes but also with the local wild life. The 12th hole is famous for its local resident – a very friendly 2 metre croc! Ideal for a day trip, weekend or extended holiday, Rich River has a variety of excellent facilities to make your stay as relaxing and enjoyable experience as possible, and all at affordable rates. The rooms overlook the landscaped gardens with two pools, barbeques and wonderful facilities all at your EFITS IP BEN ERSH door step. MEMB d an E
For a short course, by some course standards, Yarram Golf Club is anything but a push-over. The first four holes open with a long par 3 and two very long par 4’s, the only respite being the short par 4 third, so, the 5,717 metre total length is deceptive. From that point on it is still a very challenging golf course. Carved out of natural bush and sitting entirely on sand, it is well drained, regularly watered and lush. Stay on the fairways and you are rewarded with terrific lies. Go one metre off the fairways and you may be playing from natural sand, with the added hazard of bark from the magnificent trees lining the fairways. Yarram is a well designed challenge, with true greens requiring accuracy and many strategically placed traps. Every inch of Yarram is beautiful and a true test of golf in an unspoiled, natural environment and the closing four holes are as good as you will find anywhere. Yarram regularly rates in the top 10 public access courses in Victoria and was recently rated the best volunteer run course in Australia. Great packages are available and there is lots to do and see in Yarram and district and all of this within two hours of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Recently I took the opportunity to go to Perth to play in the 2008 WA Drummond Club State Final at The Vines. I would like to congratulate Lee, Anthony, Sam, and everyone else involved in this and all the golf days that they run. I try to play in every event, and I’m never disappointed. The event in Perth was the biggest event that I’ve played in so far, and even though the Lakes Course proved a challenge for me, I had a great day with the people of WA. I also had the chance to play all 27 holes at Joondalup, and also The Cut. I suggest any trip to WA should include these 2 courses. Joondalup has some of the most memorable holes I have seen, 2,3,4,5 at the Quarry, 2,3, and 9 on the Lakes, and 3 and 4 on The Dunes the best of them. If you decide to play The Cut, make sure you have your A game, plenty of balls, and a camera wouldn’t hurt. My trip to WA was great fun, the people friendly, and I can’t wait to go back”. Daniel Luck

Just wanted to pass on my very best thanks to you both for a well run event. Nothing seemed to be a problem and to me everything went quite smoothly. Hugh, John, Daryl and myself had the most enjoyable day. While playing the course we discussed the excellent layout and condition of the course. With the amount of bunkers the short game school that I did with Nadene, Sandy and Gareth really helped too. Obviously the weather was perfect which goes a long way to making the day the success it was. I will be endeavouring to attend more of these days in the future, and all the best to the both of you. > Fabulous Weekend Just thought I’d let you know we had a fabulous weekend at Hawthorn Suites at 13th Beach Resort Bellarine Peninsula. The accommodation was lovely and our dinner at the clubhouse was great. Even the terrible weather wasn’t a dampener. Unfortunately I can’t comment on the course at 13th Beach as I didn’t play, however the guys said it was a really good course. They were very happy. Thank you so much for your assistance and I’m sure we’ll be organising another weekend shortly. Sonya Kobylinski
