Words From the Top

From the Managing Director

WORDS FROM THE TOP

Welcome to the August 2009 edition of Beyond the Fairways. As the days start to lengthen we particularly look forward to another summer season of golf with the much anticipated participation of Tiger Woods at this year’s Australian Masters at Kingston Heath. While Tiger missing the cut at the British Open was the early surprise, surely the big story of the tournament was the amazing efforts of Tom Watson, a previous winner on five occasions. For the second year in a row two of the legends of world golf have turned back the clock. Last year Greg Norman’s heroics saw him finish an incredible third at the age of 53, and this year Tom Watson went one step closer at the age of 59, finishing second in a play-off. A sixth British Open would certainly have been a remarkable feat. Is it a coincidence that we have seen the likes of Greg Norman, Tom Watson, Rocco Mediate and Kenny Perry in the twilight of their careers contest so strongly four of the last six major championships? Without doing a disservice to the enormous ability of this elite group I believe it is a combination of modern equipment and new technologies that is prolonging these careers. Over the last fifteen or so years golf equipment has advanced more than it probably had in all the time prior to that. While driver, hybrid and ball advancements come readily to mind there is much other technology-based equipment that greatly assists the amateurs such as you and me.

www.drummondclub.com

I have in the last two months started wearing my Skins compression garments for golf with remarkable success. I have found that I am consistently hitting more greens each round and feeling less tired at the end of a round. There is a feature article in this edition that explains how these garments work and the many benefits you can get for a reasonably modest investment. In recent years a rule change has enabled golfers to have the assistance of range finders, such as GPS-based distance finders like the Sureshot GPS. Not only do these products help you to calculate distance but they show you how far you have driven the ball and distances to bunkers, water hazards etc. In addition to helping you improve your golf these aids speed up play, with distance to greens readily available from the rough, trees or fairway. Our best wishes for good golfing in the coming season, and make sure that when you are next in-store that you inquire about these new exciting products that will help lift your game. Kind regards,

Mark Abeyaratne, Managing Director

LOWER YOUR SCORE WITH A BETTER SHORTGAME As golfers we’re constantly looking for ways in which we can better our scores. This could be with lessons, buying the latest equipment, practicing and any other legal means. One of the quickest ways to lower your score is to look at your strengths and weaknesses and build your game and set around this. To quote a famous golfer (and movie star) “KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS” and play the percentages by hitting shots that work for you more times than not. If four out of five 3 iron shots you hit end up being duds then take the 3 iron out of the bag and carry an alternative like a hybrid or a lofted fairway wood. The short game is one of the most neglected parts of most golfers’ game. Around 70% of the game takes

place from around 120m and in, but yet only around 35% of the equipment we carry is designed to support this and most golfers very rarely practice this part of the game. Keep in mind that a 250m drive is worth the same on the score card as a one meter putt. Most of the pros carry three to four wedges in their bags so that they can play a variety of shots and this helps them to save shots which naturally leads to better scores. The following product reviews will help you gain a better insight into the variety of different wedges and putters available on the market today. For more information on how the short game can help reduce score drop into your local Drummond Golf store and have a chat with a well-informed staff member. Many thanks to the Mick Gaffney, Chris Harris, Josh Leggo and Rod Meikle for their comprehensive reviews on the following short game products.

TAYLORMADE Z TP WEDGE

BY CHRIS HARRIS DRUMMOND GOLF OSBORNE PARK THE TAYLORMADE Z TP WEDGES ARE A FINE PIECE OF WORKMANSHIP. Any level of golfer can fit this wedge into their bag. One of the versatile features of this wedge is what we call a sole grind. This is when the back part of the sole is ground down to make a TAYLORMADE Z TP flat section enabling the golfer to open up or lay the wedge on its back without the leading edge lifting up too high. This reduces the chance of blading the shot and makes both the high soft flop shot and the hard or wet sand shot easier to play. TaylorMade have brought out the Z TP wedges in a smoked PVD finish so you don’t get the sun glare while playing that cute little flop shot. Another bonus with the TaylorMade Z TP wedges is that they have a 10% bigger milled Z groove than many other wedges. This means that there will be more grooves gripping into the ball producing more ball spin. Just what you need to stop the ball quickly.

TAYLORMADE Z TP WEDGE

BY CHRIS HARRIS DRUMMOND GOLF OSBORNE PARK

THE TITLEIST VOKEY WEDGES HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR MANY YEARS AND ARE STILL ONE OF THE MOST USED WEDGES ON TOUR.

THE TAYLORMADE Z TP WEDGES ARE A FINE PIECE OF WORKMANSHIP.

The latest edition to the Vokey range is the Spin Milled Series. These wedges are sleek-looking with a thin top line that creates confidence at address. The wedges are split into three glare-free finishes, Carbon Steel Tour Chrome, Oil Can* and Black Nickel*. The new 30% larger grooves and milled face will increase your backspin and control, particularly from therough and in wet conditions. The non- glare finish helps reduce the effect of the sun at set up. The wedges’ versatility enables you to play every kind of shot from the low spinner to the high soft landing lob. They will suit the beginner golfer to the more accomplished player, with their broad range of lofts and bounces, designed to create the perfect wedge combination and distance gapping. TITLEIST VOKEY SPIN MILLED The Titleist Vokey SM wedges come in a range of lofts/bounces: 48/06, 50/08, 52/08, 54/08*, 54/11, 54/14*, 56/08*, 56/11, 56/14*, 58/08, 58/12*, 60/04*, 60/07, 60/10*, 62/07 and 64/09* denotes men’s right hand only. Don’t be daunted by the many options. The key thing to remember is that a high bounce is designed for soft turf conditions and bunkers whereas a low bounce is designed for firmer turf and tight lies. All these wedges come with dynamic gold wedge flex and custom orders have options of different shafts and flexes.

Any level of golfer can fit this wedge into their bag. One of the versatile features of this wedge is what we call a sole grind. The back part of the sole is ground down to make a flat section, enabling the golfer to open up or lay the wedge on its back without the leading edge lifting up too high. This reduces the chance of blading the shot and makes both the high soft flop shot and the hard or wet sand TAYLORMADE Z TP shot easier to play. TaylorMade has brought out the Z TP wedges in a smoked PVD finish so you don’t get the sun glare while playing that cute little flop shot. Another bonus with the TaylorMade Z TP wedges is that they have a 10% bigger milled Z groove than many other wedges. This means that there will be more grooves gripping into the ball and producing more ball spin. Just what you need to stop the ball quickly. The TaylorMade Z TP wedges have a wide range of lofts/bounce: Right hand - 52/08, 54/10, 56/12, 58/08 and 60/06 Left hand - 52/08, 56/12 and 60/06. Combine these lofts with a mid bounce and you have a range of wedges that can be used in soft or firm bunkers or turf, enabling you to set your wedges up to suit your game and your course. The TaylorMade Z TP wedge is suited to any level of golfer so take this wedge out and you too will be very pleased with both its looks and its performance.

WILSON STAFF TW9 WEDGE BY JOSH LEGGO DRUMMOND GOLF NORTHMEAD

WILSON STAFF TW9

ONE OF THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY WEDGES ON THE MARKET IS THE WILSON STAFF TW9. The precision design of the TW9 wedge offers all the features that any level of golfer would expect to get in this style of wedge. The milled grooves help to increase players’ ability to generate spin on approach shots and short shots around the greens, which allows them to better judge and control the distance they are hitting the ball around the green. The narrow sole design allows them to easily lift the ball into the air out of all kinds of lies.

The different levels of bounce used on the wedges across all lofts makes the wedges suitable for a large variety of players and course conditions. The bounce of the TW9 wedges is an average one and is not too high or low. It helps get the ball out of the bunkers and the higher the bounce the more the club will bounce off the sand the lower the bounce the more it will slide through the sand. The wedges are available in two distinct finishes: the satin and black nickel. The advantage of the satin finish is that it retains its look better as the wedge ages. The advantage of the black nickel finish is the reduction in reflected light off the club face, which can affect the player’s vision in certain lighting conditions. The gap wedge options are available in right hand only in 48 and 50 lofts in the cavity back shape in both satin and black nickel finishes. Lofts 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 are available in both finishes in right hand. Left hand options are available in the black nickel finish only in lofts 52, 56 and 60.

CALLAWAY X WEDGE

BY ROD MEIKLE DRUMMOND GOLF FRANKSTON THIS LATEST CALLAWAY WEDGE HAS BEEN DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY RENOWNED CLUB MAKER AND WEDGE DESIGNER ROGER CLEVELAND, WITH INPUT FROM NUMEROUS TOUR PROS. This has resulted in a wedge that, for the average weekend golfer and Tour player alike, provides amazing feel at impact and maximum versatility from a variety of different lies around the green. The first great feature of the new X-forged wedge is that it is forged from 1020 carbon steel, one of the highest grade steels available to manufacturers. Forging is important because, unlike casting, it eliminates any impurities in the club head, which gives the user the unmistakable soft feel needed for short game control. Another feature of these wedges is what Callaway calls, “MackDaddy Grooves”. These grooves are available on selected models in the range and are designed to be the widest and deepest that Callaway can legally produce, which enables your average golfer to create incredible spin and control around the green, normally only achieved by the Tour pros on TV! Also, on selected models, Callaway has introduced a “C- grind sole”. Basically this means that Callaway has ground down the heel and toe area on the sole of the club, which creates a sole shaped like the letter “C”. This enables the golfer to open and close the face on hard Australian turf conditions and play a wide variety of short CALLAWAY X FORGED game shots without the fear of hitting that nasty skinny shot that flies over the back of the green. The final distinguishing feature of the X-forged range is the sheer number of loft, bounce, grind and groove combinations available, along with two different finishes to the head. The first finish is New White Chrome, which is a satin metal look that maintains its finish for a longer time compared to the New Gun Metal Vintage, which is designed to lose its finish and have an almost rusty appearance after prolonged use. This Vintage head is preferred by a lot of Tour players because of its duller, glare-reducing finish. Specialty wedges were traditionally available in three main lofts: gap wedge (52 degrees), sand wedge (56 degrees) and lob wedge (60 degrees). But in this X-forged range there are 15 right-handed loft/bounce/grind/groove combinations and seven left-handed combinations ranging from 48 degrees all the way to 64 degrees. This enables you to fully customise your wedge set up and maximise your ability to save shots in your short game.

SCOTTY CAMERON STUDIO SELECT PUTTERS BY MICK GAFFNEY DRUMMOND GOLF GOSFORD

WHEN YOU THINK OF PREMIER PUTTERS, GENERALLY THE FIRST NAME THAT COMES TO A GOLFER’S MIND IS SCOTTY CAMERON AND THERE’S A GOOD REASON FOR THIS LONG STANDING REPUTATION. In terms of the general design process, most putters are crafted using a cast where hot liquid metal is poured into a standard mould, whereas a Scotty Cameron designed putter is milled from one block of the finest stainless steel or aluminium (depending on the model). This design gives the player extra confidence at address and an unmatched feel. Scotty Cameron’s new Studio Select Range doesn’t disappoint with moveable weights that helping stability and accuracy on off-center hits, creating the perfect roll. There is a putter for every golfer in this new series from the Newport to the Kombi. The Kombi is milled from aluminium, making it lighter with a low centre of gravity deeper in SCOTTY CAMERON the heads, which gives it stabSTUDIO SELECT 2.7 ility through the putting stroke. The Newport’s raised heel and toe creates an easy set up and alignment to target. A true testament to these putters is that the world’s number one player, Tiger Woods has used the Newport for the past five years. The Studio Select comes in a range of models: • Newport - 1.5, 2 (RH and LH), 2 Mid Slant, 2.6 and 2.7 • Square back (RH and LH) • Fast back • Kombi - standard, mid and long: Standard (RH and LH: 33, 34, 35 inch), mid (42, 43, 44 inch) and long (48, 50 inch). This putter can be made to suit your specifications for length, loft and lie angle. Putters can be ordered with standard weights or more weighted (+10 grams).

TAYLORMADE ITSY BITSY SPIDER PUTTER BY CHRIS HARRIS DRUMMOND GOLF OSBORNE PARK

ARE YOU GETTING TOO MUCH BACKSPIN ON THE BALL? OR ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THE DISTANCE RIGHT, EVEN WHEN YOUR PUTTS COME OFF THE CENTRE OF THE FACE? Then the TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy putter is the putter for you. The Itsy Bitsy putters have one of the most innovative systems, to make lining up those putts a lot easier. The putter is designed around a light aluminum core, which leaves the putter well balanced and gives it a high MOI (Moment of Inertia). The high MOI gives the player the confidence of knowing that if they miss-hit a putt the ball TAYLORMADE TITSY BITSY SPIDER will still travel very close to the desired distance. The most liked feature of this putter is its titanium face insert with precisely positioned polymer filled grooves. Polymer is like a rubber material that reduces vibration and results in a smooth, soft feel. This insert also increases the chance of getting top spin on the ball to reduce jump and skid, giving truer, more consistent control and roll. A weighting system in the back helps with setting the putter up for different types of greens. You can have it set up light for fast greens or heavy for slow greens. This means that you don’t have to change the length of your stroke to suit the pace of the greens. The TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy putter is available in 33, 34 and 35 inch lengths in either a plumber’s bend or straight shaft option, which allows for custom fitting to suit you. This putter is highly recommended for any golfer who is having problems with their putting.

ODYSSEY WHITE HOT XG PUTTERS

BY ROD MEIKLE DRUMMOND GOLF FRANKSTON

THE FIRST DEFINING FEATURE OF THESE ODYSSEY ALIGNMENT PUTTERS IS THE PATENTED “XG” FACE INSERT. Odyssey developed this using feedback about two previous face inserts: the original White Hot and the popular White Steel. Both of these inserts had their positive and negative aspects. The White Hot was popular mainly due to the super-soft feel it provided while putting, but because the insert was so soft, it made distance control a little harder on longer putts. On the flip side, the White Steel had a milled metal in lay in the face, which improved distance control on long putts, but lacked the soft feel of the White Hot insert. With the XG putter Odyssey has designed an insert that provides an amazing feel while maintaining excellent distance control. This was achieved this by using two different layers in the insert: an elastomer core material which is soft, for great feel, and a thin outer striking surface which is firm, for great responsiveness and distance control on longer putts. The main feature point of this range of putters is the Hi-Def Alignment System. This is unique in comparison to other alignment putters because it has two white stripes running the length of the head, making it easy to line up your putts at

the Intended target, resulting in more accurate putting. The main reason amateurs miss putt is because of alignment issues. Most people don’t even realise they are aiming off-line and try to compensate with their stroke to get the ball rolling on the correct line, which is extremely hard to do and can be very inconsistent. So using an Odyssey XG putter with the Hi-Def Alignment System will help golfers impODYSSEY WHITE HOT XG MARXMAN rove their accuracy and lower their scores. The Odyssey XG putters that feature the Hi-Def Alignment System are: • White Hot XG Marxman • White Hot XG Marxman Blade • White Hot XG Teron • White Hot XG 330 Mallet. All these putters are available in 33’, 34” & 35” lengths The Marxman and Teron putters are available in right and left hand and the Marxman Blade and 330 Mallet are available in right hand only.

AUSTRALIAN INNOVATION OUTFIT TING THE WORLD

S K IN S By Sam Gole THE NEW AGE TECHNICAL WEAR INDUSTRY IS EVOLVING RAPIDLY AND IS CHALLENGING OUR ATTITUDE TO WHAT CLOTHING IS APPROPRIATE TO WEAR FOR SPORT, TRAVEL OR EVEN AT WORK. Long gone are the days when the good old tracksuit was the best item to throw on simply because it felt comfortable, warm and roomy. Today scientific researchers and elite sports people tell us that engineered gradient compression garments are the new thing and will produce results that enhance performance in training, competition and recovery. At the forefront of this new frontier is the Australian company Skins. In 2002 the company consisted of just six employees and only produced the now

www.drummondclub.com

famous long tights. Today Skins is a growing global entity with more than fifty employees worldwide and distributes a growing product range to over forty countries. These products are not only designed to aid those participating in activities involving high energy or significant impact. Golfers too may see improvement in their performance as the Skins gradient compression garments reduce muscle vibration, increase the flow of oxygen throughout the body and control body temperature. Who would have thought it: Lycra could be the golfer’s salvation. I spoke with Greg Steyger, Director of Product Development at Skins.

Q&A

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS AUSTRALIAN INNOVATION

Australian Innovation

Features

Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WEARING SKINS? Skins body-moulded compression performance garments are manufactured from the finest Lycra and Meryl microfibre and scientifically engineered to provide support and muscle alignment. The key features of Skins and their benefits are: • BioAcceleration Technology™ - enhanced circulation from engineered gradient compression which assists in reducing lactic acid build-up. • Skin fit - a precision fit based on your body mass index (BMI) algorithm. • Skin muscle - focuses muscle power and dramatically reduces muscle vibration. • Skin dry - moisture management wicking draws moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry. • Skin temperature - optimises your body temperature in warm and cool conditions. • Skin fresh - antibacterial and antimicrobial treatments discourage growth of bacteria and help prevent odour. • Skin UVblock - UPF 50+.

Q. HOW DID SKINS ORIGINATE? WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? Skins was founded by Brad Duffy, a Sydney chiropractor, barrister and self-confessed sports nut, who conceived the idea while skiing in the Australian Alps in the 1990s and had the painful experience of lactic acid build-up in his muscles. He thought that there must be a way to counteract this pain so he decided to develop a device that would deliver a better body performance.

Q. EXPLAIN WHAT THE SKINS GARMENTS ARE. People recognise Skins as the black tights with yellow stitching that you see so many elite athletes and casual exercisers alike wearing during training. The aim of Skins is to help people train harder, move faster and recover faster. Skins compression garments apply the right amount of pressure to the body to accelerate blood flow and deliver oxygen to the body. They enable blood to flow faster to the heart, which means more oxygen and less lactic acid in muscles. By increasing blood flow Skins can also help to prevent vein problems, such as spider and varicose veins.

www.drummondclub.com

Q. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM WEARING SKINS? Skins benefit absolutely everyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors to people who are on long-haul flights. There is really no one who can’t benefit from increased circulation. To give you an idea of the diverse uses people have for them, there are companies in India who encourage their employees to wear Skins to help combat bad circulation from sitting down all day, and many warehouse workers and nurses wear them during their shifts to help prevent soreness and tiredness in their legs. Skins have also been shown to have significant benefits for people when flying. A recent study, reported in the Medical Journal of Australia, tested 22 Qantas pilots and 25 passengers who spent more than five hours sedentary in an aircraft and found that Skins

• Ice - uses micro-encapsulation technology to embed a menthol cooling agent into the garment, keeping the user cool while they work out. • Snow - compression garments with additional warmth for skiing and snowboarding. • Travel & Recovery - for use post-exercise or while flying to reduce deep vein thrombosis. • Youth - for kids.

Q. HOW DO I KNOW THAT SKINS WILL HELP ME? WHERE’S THE PROOF?

improved circulation in-flight while significantly decreasing leg pain and increasing energy and alertness. Researcher Melissa Hagan looked specifically at the effects of sedentary travel on ankle swelling. Also investigated and documented were participant ratings on leg pain and discomfort, energy levels, alertness, ability to concentrate and post-flight sleep. Results showed a decrease in ankle swelling of approximately 20mm, along with improvement in: • leg pain by 60% • leg discomfort by 50% • leg swelling by 45% • energy level by 18% • alertness level by 13% • concentration ability by 12%.

Q. WHAT IS BIOACCELERATION TECHNOLOGY™?

Skins BioAcceleration Technology™ has been developed over years of scientific research. Ongoing testing of elite athletes has proved that it creates marked reduction in the build-up of lactic acid immediately after periods of sustained exercise (after 2 hours and 15 minutes of exercise the reduction was 37%) and allows for more rapid return to normal levels (after 20 minutes recovery time the return was up to 38% faster). The athletes experienced less fatigue, soreness was minimised and they recovered faster.

Q. WHAT SKINS PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE?

• Sport - the original black garment with yellow stitching designed for active people. • She - a range specifically for women, including the She Inspiration range which combines the benefits of compression with fashionable designs. • Cycle - the newest range from Skins that uses leading chamois technology.

www.drummondclub.com

Skins are the only compression garments that have undergone rigorous clinical testing. Since the beginning the company has invested heavily in research, and independent research has also consistently found that Skins help people train harder and recover faster. The company continues to make research their number one focus, which is how it is able to continually develop products that provide optimal results. This is why Skins are the only compression garments endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and favoured by so many of Australia’s top athletes and sporting teams.

Q. HOW CAN SKINS HELP RECOVERY FROM INJURY? In particular Skins assist people to recover from muscular injuries by increasing blood flow. Australian cyclist Anna Mears acknow-ledges Skins as an essential element in her rehabilitation from a broken back and taking out a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Likewise cricketers such as Brett Lee use Skins as part of their rehabilitation programs when injured.

Q. HOW CAN SKINS PREVENT INJURY?

Skins unique muscle wrapping ensures that muscles are correctly aligned, greatly reducing the risk of muscle strain.

Q. ARE THE SKINS TOPS TOO RESTRICTIVE TO WEAR FOR GOLF?

For golf and other sports that require a lot of upper-body movement the company developed the CROM top. It allows increased mobility of muscles in the shoulder and chest region and helps to keep the upper-body muscles in alignment, which is excellent for golfers. Many golfers also report to us that they love wearing the tights under their golf pants as it reduces leg tenderness after a long day on the course.

A Golfer’s Pilgrimage to the Gold Coast

Australia’s No.1 Holiday Destination

Features

A GOLFER’S PILGRIMAGE TO THE

GOLD COAST By Lee Midson

The Gold Coast is synonymous with sun, surf and sand and the golden-tanned bodies that adorn this glittering coast. It is Australia’s number one holiday destination and attracts holidaymakers from around Australia and the world, keen to soak up the Queensland sunshine and enjoy the laidback lifestyle of this coastal playground. The Gold Coast is also home to several world-class championship golf courses and is a year-round golfing retreat that draws golfers from all corners of the globe.

www.drummondclub.com

A BRIEF HISTORY Over a century ago this region began its transformation into one of the world’s great holiday destinations. The first signs of interest in the coastal area as a resort began in the late 1870s and when Queensland Governor Musgrave built a holiday home in the hinterland that interest grew among Brisbane’s wealthy and influential. In the 1920s John Cavill opened the Surfers Paradise Hotel (Cavill Avenue was named after him) and the area formerly known as Elston was renamed Surfers Paradise in 1933 after Cavill’s hotel. A small town grew up around the hotel and gradually settlements formed along the coast. World War II brought thousands of servicemen on R&R, and in the post-war real estate boom this area became the place to buy and sell and land. Journalists describing this hot property market referred to the area as the “Gold Coast”. Seeing the marketing potential of this savvy promot-ional brand, the local council adopted the name Gold Coast Town Council in 1958, and the region was officially renamed the Gold Coast in 1959. The development continued, linked to the growth of the Australian beach culture with its iconic images of bronzed surf lifesavers, beach babes and golden bikini-clad Meter Maids. Today the Gold Coast is a thriving metropolis that attracts over 10 million visitors each year. The coastline is dotted with hundreds of luxury beachside apart-ments that reach skywards and is now home to the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the Q1. From the top of this 78-storey residential tower you can enjoy 360-degree views of the world’s only beach-side observation desk. For family entertainment, this is the place for loads of fun and excitement at the major theme parks and attractions such as Dreamworld, Seaworld, Movieworld and, for nature lovers, the famous Currumbin Bird Sanctuary. If you’re a punter then you can try your luck at Jupiters Casino.

It’s a great base for golfers, with several premier 18-hole golf courses nearby and a magnificent 27-hole composite golf course on site. The course was designed by Japanese golf course architect Tomojiro Maruyama and opened in 1990. In early 2002, the former West Course was reconstructed and a new 9-hole layout designed by Graham Marsh was added, called Wangarra, complementing the two original 9-hole courses, Aroona and Binnowee. Today the 27-hole layout is the only one on the Gold Coast and it provides a challenging range of options for golfers of all skill levels, as well as being a championship course. Royal Pines Resort recently hosted the twentieth ANZ Ladies Masters. This annual major event attracts the world’s top female professional golfers and is a great opportunity to see golfing legends such as Karrie Webb, Laura Davies and some of the sport’s rising stars in action live.

THE GLADES

Glades Drive, Robina The Glades is conveniently located just off the Pacific Highway in Robina and is accessible from Brisbane Airport in under an hour or is just 20 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport or Surfers Paradise. The course was designed by Australian professional golfer and sports legend Greg Norman and is typical of his trademark aggressive layouts, with 98 bunkers featured throughout the course. The superb agronomy ensures a superior putting surface for the entire year, unlike any other course on the Gold Coast. Recently when many courses on the Gold Coast were closed due to torrential rain and flooding, The Glades was one of the few courses open for play. Greg Norman not only had the vision to create a challenging golf course, he also retained 9 hectares of wetland to create a natural wildlife sanctuary within the course. The Glades is definitely in a class of its own, and this par 72, 6420m championship course is a “must play” on your next Gold Coast golf trip. Other services available include the Gary Edwin Golf Academy where golfers of all skill levels, from beginners through to the experienced, can take advantage of

specialised coaching programs. Golfers take note: Gary Edwin is the coach of Queenslander Rod Pampling, who snared the 2008 Australian Masters at Huntingdale. Another unique service is The Glades Spa, located on site adjacent to the clubhouse. After your golf round, why not treat yourself to a full body massage and enjoy the therapeutic benefits that can relieve muscular tension and soreness, and keep you in form for the next round of golf. NEW GOLF DEVELOPMENTS AT SANCTUARY COVE After celebrating 21 years in operation, The Palms course at Sanctuary Cove is undergoing a major transformation and when it re-opens in the next 12-18 months it will be sporting a very enticing new look.

www.drummondclub.com

The Palms was originally designed by Fred Bolton, who worked with Jack Nicklaus, and while the course was still being comp-leted it was first opened in a 9-hole format. The first Pro Am and formal opening of the course was on 6th January 1988 during The Ultimate Event, which drew the big guns of golf, including Arnold Palmer, Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo. Curtis Strange from the USA won the Sanctuary Cove Golf Classic with a score of 272 – 16 under par – and took home the $72,000 prize after beating Ian Woosnam, a professional golfer from Wales, by one stroke.

Twenty-one years later at the end of play on Sunday, 3rd May 2009, The Palms golf course was closed and the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club staged a special tournament to mark this. Following a terrific day of play, members and guests celebrated with a special function at Signatures Restaurant, which also closed that day. Ross Watson from Ross Watson Golf Course Architecture has designed the new golf course, which is a complete rebuild of most of the holes but still follows some of the old fairways. There are two new holes built on land either side of Casey’s Road that allows The Palms to start and finish at the new clubhouse. After playing the first two holes, players will go through the underpass and pick up at the end of the old 11th hole (now the 3rd hole),

Players will then go back through the underpass to the 10th hole, which was the original 18th hole and has been moved sideways. The old front 9 has now been converted to 8 holes (11-18) freeing up more space and ending back at the new golf clubhouse that is due to open in October 2009. The current contract being administered by Ross Watson will deliver another 10 holes, making a total of 12 new holes that is, holes 1, 2, 3, and 10 to 18 inclusive.

The works include earthworks and reshaping, new drainage, tees, bunkers, modification of existing grounds and additional landscaping to complement the realigned holes, together with re-grassing the entire course.

Only 2 hours from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Yarram is a beautiful course, carved out of natural bushland, where you’ll be surrounded by birdsong and may see wildlife such as koalas, echidnas and kangaroos. It is a relatively short course, but don’t be fooled- it is anything but a pushover. Stay on the fairways and you will be rewarded with wonderful lies. Stray a metre off and you will be testing your ability to recover. Yarram is a watered sandbelt course and provides a true test of the game as well as being green and lush all year round. Yarram’s successive managements have strived to maintain its natural feel and natural challenges, and they have added quite a few challenges of their own in the form of well-placed bunkers and a magnificent lake to test your second shot on the 10th. The 10th is a short dogleg par 5, but if you wanted to have a go at the green with your second you might be rewarded with a birdie or an eagle. Get the jitters and you could easily run up 8 or worse. Yarram opens with a long par 3, which has only been holed once and that was last year, by the current club champion, Chris Bailey. Holes 2 and 4 are long par 4s that

MAKE -A- WISH AUSTRALIA

Make-A-Wish® Australia grants Wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their experience with hope, strength and joy. Turning a child’s dream into reality is an incredibly special and powerful thing to do, requiring much hard work from those within Make-A-Wish® and from community and corporate supporters. We are very grateful to Drummond Golf for their continued and valued support. We were proud to announce a three-year partnership with Drummond Golf as a Bronze sponsor early in 2009. Through the donation of goods and funds, Drummond Golf will greatly assist us in our Wish- granting efforts and enable us to share the power of a Wish with all Australians. Drummond Golf officially launched the partnership at their annual Golf Awards Night held on 25th February. Make-A-Wish was warmly welcomed by all present and we are honoured to have the support of such a wonderfully generous organisation. Pro-golfer and Make-A-Wish Official Friend Brett Ogle, has been a long-time supporter of our Foundation and has assisted us at various Golf Days as well as hosting the Golf Awards Night. We thank Brett for his time, effort and goodwill.

www.drummondclub.com

In 2008 alone, we had the privilege of granting 433 Wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since our establishment in 1985 Make-A-Wish has granted over 5600 Wishes and with the help of more than 1000 volunteers at 56 branches across Australia we look forward to continuing this work in the years to come. We had some truly amazing Wishes last year including a meet and greet with Zac Efron from High School Musical, a train ride in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a visit to Jackie Chan’s home in Hong Kong, a ride in an Army helicopter and a Wish to be a Princess for a day. Such Wishes are not uncommon and this touch of magic that encapsulates the work we do, certainly rubs off on all involved with Make-A-Wish. Companies and individuals that provide assistance, such as fundraising, ongoing donations, goods-in-kind or pro bono support, can share in this magic and help bring hope and joy to sick children, as well as delivering their brave families a much needed boost. On behalf of Make-A-Wish, I’d like to thank Ravi Abeyaratne, the Drummond Golf Board, franchisees and all the staff and members of Drummond Golf for their ongoing commitment. I know that the partnership will enable many Wishes to become a reality and we look forward to a successful association between Drummond Golf and Make-A-Wish Australia in years to come.

Girls Great Golf Getaway: Noosa

Features

GIRLS GREAT GOLF GETAWAY NOOSA SPRINGS RESORT, QLD By Lee Midson For reservations contact Lee at the Drummond Club on (03) 9565 1415.

Following the successful launch of our first “ Girls Great Golf Getaway” in September last year, we held our second girls coaching week in April this year at the luxurious Noosa Springs Resort. Warm sunny days with the temperature hovering around the mid 20’s were very hard to take. Then there was the extensive choice of spa treatments and pampering that one could indulge in, and the endless shopping and dining options. Combine all this with luxury resort accommodation beside the tranquil Noosa National Park and the opportunity to play one of Queensland’s top 18-hole championship golf courses and you are assured of a great golfing getaway, just perfect for the girls! COACHING PROGRAM This program is open to ladies of all ages and skill levels and twenty ladies travelled from as far as Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to enjoy this chance to getaway with “the girls”. The three-day coaching program was conducted by Nadene Gole (Drummond Club Partner Coach) and provided group clinics on the fundamentals of putting, pitching, chipping and how to tackle bunkers. Nadene’s particular expertise is the short game and her program “back to basics” is suitable for golfers of all levels. Participants also had the opportunity to put their practice into play on course, playing three rounds of 9 holes, with on course coaching. So whether you’re a beginner or a low handicapper wanting to improve your game, Nadene’s expert guidance will take your game to a new level. NOOSA SPRINGS RESORT This award-winning resort has proved to be the perfect venue for our girls golf getaways. The two bedroom apartments are spacious and ideal for twin, triple or quad share. Each apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, king beds, separate lounge and dining area, LCD TV and cable

television, DVD/CD player, laundry area, and two private balconies with views over the golf course and surrounding bushland. With its lush tree-lined fairways and meticulously manicured greens, the resort’s golf course is one you will enjoy playing time and time again. Other guest facilities include tennis courts, gymnasium, a heated outdoor pool and spa, one of Australia’s best spa centres, and a restaurant and bar. GIRLS PAMPER SESSIONS Of course a girls golf getaway would not be complete without time for a spa treatment and this is certainly the place to indulge in some serious pampering. The resort management provided guests with an introductory tour of the facilities and a glass of champagne greeted us on arrival. After a day on the golf course, you can unwind in the hydro massage pool or seek total relaxation in the unique flotation pool. A full body massage will relieve those tired muscles, or just loll around the resort pool and soak up the Queensland sunshine. Dear Lee, Thank you for arranging our trip to Joondalup Resort so quickly. We have really utilised the Drummond Club deals with a trip last year to the Gold Coast where we enjoyed a week of great golf on magnificent courses for excellent prices. When I knew I was heading to Perth recently the first thing I did was look up the Drummond Club booklet for some ideas on what courses we might play for a weekend. I found the getaway packages section and called. I think the membership price each year is great value, given the store discounts and the course deals offered. I am even contemplating some of the competition events in the future if my work commitments allow it and my golf improves. Our holidays are based around fitting in a few rounds of golf somewhere and we look forward to booking more holidays through the Drummond Club. Maree Johnstone, NSW

GIRLS GOLF GETWAY – NOOSA SPRINGS RESORT, QLD My wife Julie went on one of the Drummond Club Girls Golf Getaway clinics in April this year and was stoked by the whole experience. Nadene (Coach) was superb, so much so that soon after Julie came back she played in the championships at her club, Berwick Montuna, and WON A grade as well as having a hole in one (her first ever) in the second round. Her first ever win in the championship too! Thank you to the Dummond Club and particularly to Nadene who deserves a 10/10. Julie will be going again. Andrew Percival, VIC

The resort has two 18-hole championship courses (the Beach and Creek) regarded by many as among Victoria’s finest golf destinations. The courses complement each other with distinctly contrasting characteristics. The Beach course, the first to open in 2001, has a traditional links-style layout and has been rated as one of the top 25 golf courses and in the top 10 public access facilities in Australia. The Creek course was designed by leading Australian golf architect Tony Cashmore in conjunction with six-time major winner Nick Faldo. It is styled on the great sandbelt courses in Melbourne and provides players with a unique and challenging experience. Our event was held on the Creek course. A field of 84 players enjoyed a pre-event putting competition and fine and mild weather. Congratulations to Iain Clark, winner of the overall individual stableford division - score 40 points. WESTERN AUSTRALIA Date: Sunday, 14th June 2009 Venue: The Vines Resort and Country Club Another sell-out capacity field of 140 Drummond Club members participated in our second Western Australian event for the 2009 season. It was held at The Vines Resort and Country Club, in the picturesque Swan Valley wine region, about 35 minutes drive from Perth’s CBD. The Vines Resort has two world-class 18-hole championship courses, the Lakes and Ellenbrook. Our event was held on The Lakes course, the venue for the prestigious 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic, and it was in excellent condition. Designed by Graham Marsh and Ross Watson, the course (6494m, par 72 with an ACR 75) has been consistently rated as one of the best resort courses in Australia. After a chilly morning start, with the temperature around 5 degrees, we enjoyed perfect weather conditions on course with no wind, blue skies and plenty of WA sunshine. Before the event, players received a free Callaway golf ball sample and could enter a prize draw for the chance to win a dozen bottles of wine from local winery partner Howling Wolves. Callaway and Titleist also provided a putting promotion.

On course, TaylorMade gave a demonstration of their latest R9 drivers. Players were also shown samples of the new Skins apparel range, and could try a sample of Oakley eyewear during the round. Jeff Davies from John Hughes Group joined us on the day and sponsored several prizes including NTP on the 16th. Keeping with tradition in the west, Drummond Golf staff from the Osborne Park and Cannington stores participated in a staff competition. Ryan Addison had the honour of dressing up for the occasion, wearing the traditional pink skirt overlay (a penalty for his poor performance at the last event), but has now handed that privilege to David Moore for the next WA event. Nerissa Rice from Oakley WA joined us for the final presentations and conducted a trivia quiz, with some great prizes donated by Oakley. Special thanks also to David and Sara Breen (Drummond Golf Osborne Park) for their cooperation and assistance. Congratulations to Chris Grierson, winner of the overall individual stableford competition - score 43 points. QUEENSLAND Date: Friday, 19th June 2009 Venue: Lakelands Golf Club Our second Queensland event for the 2009 season was held at Lakelands Golf Club on the Gold Coast. Lakelands was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus and is a world-class 18 hole championship course. Fortunately we had an early morning start and missed the torrential rain that bucketed down later that day and eventually caused major flooding and course closures over the next couple of days. Pre-event,

players had the chance to warm up and test the latest range of drivers from TaylorMade and Titleist, and participate in a host of novelty competitions on course. Naomi McIntosh (Drummond Gold Underwood) also joined us for a round and she participated with a group of Drummond Club members from Brisbane. Congratulations to Breydan Ryan, winner of the overall individual stableford competition - score 39 points (countback). NORTHERN TERRITORY Date: Sunday, 21st June 2009 Venue: Darwin Golf Club The annual Drummond Club Northern Territory event was held for the first time at the Darwin Golf Club. A capacity field of 117 Drummond Club members and guests teed off from 7.33am through to 1.30pm on a rolling start. The course was in fantastic condition, producing some great scores for the day. The event also had a strong contingent of players in the teams division, with twelve groups taking part. The winning score was tightly contested, with three teams recording a score of 52. The individual stableford winner, Sandra Applebee, a South Australian resident visiting Darwin, is the first female Drummond Club member to win a state final and will now advance to the national final at the Heritage in Melbourne later this year. Our special thanks to Nathan and Belinda Campbell and staff from Drummond Golf Darwin for all their efforts in ensuring the day was a great success. Congratulations to Sandra for her win in the overall individual stableford competition - score 43 points. SOUTH AUSTRALIA Date: Friday, 26th June 2009 Venue: Gawler Golf Club We travelled to the renowned Barossa Valley for our second South Australian event this year at the Gawler Golf Club, one of the best 18-hole golf courses in this region.

Eighty Drummond Club members and guests participated in the event, including Drummond Golf SA staff members Dave Ellis and Matt Stone. Prior to the start, players could test the latest range of drivers from TaylorMade and Wilson and enjoyed a putting competition and demonstration by Ping and Titleist. Out on the course, local winery partner Tomich Wines provided a wine-tasting and players could also sample the products of Elderton Wines during the final presentations. Both event partners kindly donated wine for entrant prize draws. After the round players enjoyed a BBQ lunch back at the clubhouse. Congratulations to Tony Vaughan, winner of the overall individual stableford division - score 43 points. VICTORIA Date: Tuesday, 30th June 2009 Venue: Kingston Heath Golf Club We had the opportunity to play our fifth Victorian event for the 2009 season at the prestigious Kingston Heath Golf Club. This private 18-hole championship course is located in the heart of Melbourne’s sandbelt region and will be the host venue for the 2009 Australian Masters in November. Tiger Woods, the World’s No.1 golfer, will participate in this major tournament, providing a rare chance for Australian golfers to see him live, competing against the world’s best golfers here in Australia. There was keen interest among Drummond Club members to play the championship course ahead of the Masters and to see how the venue was shaping up for the event. The course was in excellent condition though the field of 96 players had to contend with extreme winds and rain. Fortunately the round concluded before the winds reached gale force but the results reflected a tough day. Joining us also for the round were Drummond Golf staff members David Sinclair (Taylors Lakes), Paul Williams and Sarah Clarke (Kew),

Dave Johnson (Dandenong) and Rod Laugher (Fyshwick, ACT). Activities included a pre-event driver demonstration by Titleist and the chance to test the latest range of Titleist drivers. New Drummond Club partner Unsurpassed Vehicle Imaging sponsored a $250 prize voucher for the NTP winner, 2nd shot on the 1st hole. There was also a host of other novelty prizes, competitions and lucky prize draws. Congratulations to Gavin Lang, winner of the overall individual stableford division - score 35 points. NEW SOUTH WALES Date: Friday, 3rd July 2009 Venue: Cypress Lakes Resort, Hunter Valley We travelled to the spectacular Hunter Valley wine region for our third New South Wales event of the season. This was the first time the Drummond Club has hosted an event at Cypress Lakes Resort, one of Australia’s finest golf and spa retreats. The multi-award-winning resort is located in the heart of the Hunter Valley (about a 2 hour drive north of Sydney) and offers an 18-hole championship golf course. It is a great base from which to explore the renowned wineries. Pre-event, players were able to test the latest range of drivers from Wilson and Titleist. Joining us for the round were Drummond Golf staff members Trevor Tutt (Gosford), Anthony Quinn (Newcastle) and Scott McIlvenie (Casula). The weather prediction was for rain and strong winds. Fortunately the rain held off but players had to endure blustery conditions, though there were some outstanding results. Lee Payne (Drummond Club member from Gosford) scored a hole in one on the 15th. For most of us this is a feat we will only dream about, but Lee informed us during the presentations that this was his third hole in one! Overall the final scores reflected a close competition in most divisions. Congratulations to Andrew Bond, winner of the overall individual stableford division - score 41 points.

MEMBER FEEDBACK GOLF TRAVEL Joondalup Resort – WA

Brett Ogle’s Tip: Alignment Amateurs have a hard time lining up. The problem is that they align their body to the target first, which is completely wrong. Train yourself to set the club face first, then take your stance. Watch how the professionals do it.

Winner of US Tour events and thirteen events worldwide.

Cypress Lakes Resort Hunter Valley, NSW Hi Lee, I just thought I would send a quick email to thank you for organising our weekend at Cypress Lakes Resort. A truly professional person to deal with and I have highly recommended to my friends to join the Drummond Club because of the service and deals that you provide. I will definitely be organising another stay and play package later in the year. Once again thank you. Matthew Wildin, NSW

GOLF EVENTS The Vines Golf & Country Club, WA To David, Sara, Lee, Anthony and all Drummond Club staff, On behalf of the Sledgers WA golf crew, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Drummond team for your continued enthusiasm in organising our WA golf days. Your enthusiasm appears to never wane. Your organisational skills are of the highest professional standard. You are always approachable, always smiling, and David’s often funny addresses after each game are very refreshing. I am sure these comments would be echoed by club members Australiawide. Thank you again and keep up the great work. Geoff Pilling, WA

Girls Golf Getaway – Noosa Springs Resort, QLD My wife Julie went on one of the Drummond Club Girls Golf Getaway clinics in April this year and was stoked by the whole experience. Nadene (Coach) was superb, so much so that soon after Julie came back she played in the championships at her club, Berwick Montuna, and WON A grade as well as having a hole in one (her first ever) in the second round. Her first ever win in the championship too! Thank you to the Drummond Club and particularly to Nadene, who deserves a 10/10. Julie will be going again.
