of Asia’s most exotic destinations with over 200 golf courses throughout the popular tourist destinations of Pattaya, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket and Chiang Mai. This is a “hot” destination in many ways! A climate that offers year round tropical sunshine and average daily temperatures above 30 degrees. And if you’re a lover of Thai Food, then get ready for a delectable selection of true Thai Cuisine and it’s hot! You can indulge in all your favourite Thai dishes for a fraction of the price back home. The shopping is endless, just name it and you’ll find it… shoes, bags, apparel, and other fashion accessories, with a European influence on style and brands and again at prices you won’t believe! The golf courses are lush and green with the benefit of an abundance of water year-round. You will find tropical tree-lined fairways, medium-fast greens, strategically placed water hazards and bunkers to test your skills.

(March 08) coordinated by Thai Golf Tours travelling together with Drummond Club members and their accompanying family and friends. This 12-day tour includes a 6-round Golf Tournament with daily competitions, and winners’ trophies plus prizes for the Overall Individual and Women’s Individual Stableford Competitions. I was given the role of “Social Director” on the tour and coordinated various social activities for both the group and individuals throughout the itinerary, plus took the opportunity to research this exciting destination first-hand. My first visit to Thailand was everything I anticipated and more. Pattaya is certainly not a destination for those seeking a quiet and relaxed retreat, with over 5 Million people in this bustling coastal region and attracting tourists from all over the globe! But if it’s a warm tropical climate you’re looking for, good value for money and the opportunity to combine leisure, sightseeing, shopping and experience Thailand’s best golf courses, then a golf trip to Pattaya, Thailand is definitely worth considering.

DAY 4: Monday 10 March Tournament Round 1, Khao Kheow Country Club: Designed by Pete Dye, this 27-hole golf course is located in the heart of the Pattaya “Golf Strip” and is nestled in a picturesque valley between 2 hills with strong sea breezes prevalent most afternoons. I took the opportunity on this day to organise a day trip to Bangkok for our non-golfers on tour to enjoy some local sightseeing and shopping. A day tour including transport and guide starts from AUD $50-$60 pp.

The tour included a bullock and cart ride, raft ride down stream and lunch – Warm Regards and approx AUD$50 pp. In the evening, the tour participants enjoyed a “Welcome Dinner” at the Resort hosted by Thai Golf Tours, and time for a brief on the Tour and Event Tournament schedule. DAY 3: Sunday 9 March Free Day: A social golf event was planned at Phoenix Golf Club for those interested in a warm-up round or the day was free for some rest and relaxation before the Tournament start on Monday. In the evening, I organised a group dinner outing for all tour participants, starting with pre-dinner drinks poolside, followed by a tour downtown to one of the best Seafood Restaurants overlooking the beachfront pier. A great night enjoyed by all and chance to get acquainted with everyone.

DAY 9: Saturday 15 March Free Day: Many tour participants took the opportunity to schedule in some local shopping and sightseeing. I ventured out for a day of scuba diving off the Pattaya Coast. We dived at a point called Turtle Bay, which as the name suggests is home to some large sea turtles and an abundance of sea life. In the evening, I arranged another group dinner outing. This time we ventured to the neighbouring resort area, “Jomtien Beach”. This area is little quieter than the hustle and bustle of Pattaya’s main beach front, and a great night out. DAY 10: Sunday 16 March Tournament Round 5, Burapha (West Course): We played the 2nd 18 hole golf course at this venue (West Course) after playing the East Course in Round 3. The West Course offers a challenging experience and is suited to the more advanced golfer. Both courses are well maintained and the holes are well placed over the hilly terrain.

DAY 11: Monday 17 March Tournament Round 6, Competition Final, Green Valley: This 18-Hole course was designed by Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge and is a “links style” course, beautifully landscaped and is set amongst the gentle sloping hillside, with large rocky outcrops and boulders, watercourses and an abundance of mature trees and colourful flora. Drummond Golf Supports Women’s Golf 2008 MFS Australian Open Wrap Up Congratulations to World No. 3 Karrie Webb who held off Korean Ji-Yai Shin in a nail biting playoff to clinch the 2008 MFS Women’s Australian Open at the second extra hole. Both players started the day level at two under par, one stroke behind Lindsey Wright, before carding the day’s best rounds of six under 67 to finish at eight under for the tournament. Shin was two shots clear after four birdies on the back nine but Webb fought back with a strong birdie finish on 16 and 17 to draw level. On the first playoff hole both players made par but it was Webb who prevailed on the second hole, with her second shot finishing within three metres of the hole to sink a crucial birdie putt and claim back-toback national crowns. English rookie Melissa Reid finished in outright third, after a final round three under 70. Shin’s compatriot Amy Yang finished strong with three birdies to move into fourth place and two under for the tournament. Overnight leader Wright from Victoria, carded two over for the day with bogies on the 1st, 10th and a double on the 18th to finish in a tie for fifth spot at one under with leading amateur Kristie Smith, and Sydney-born veteran Joanne Mills. As an Official Sponsor, Drummond Golf is committed to furthering its support of Australian Women’s Golf and congratulates Golf Australia on the success of the 2008 MFS Women’s Australian Open. VICTORIA

Play Victoria’s Best Links Courses Port Philip’s Mornington Peninsula and Bellarine Peninsula

Victoria is renowned for its great sand-belt courses, but the Coastal regions along The Mornington Peninsula and Bellarine Peninsula offer some of the best “Links” courses in Victoria and arguably the best in Australia! Today there is a plethora of private and public golf courses to be found on both Peninsulas including such well-known courses as “Moonah Links” – Home of the 2003 and 2005 Australian Open. Located just 1 hour’s drive from Melbourne’s CBD the two Peninsulas form the East and West Coastlines around Port Phillip Bay and are regular weekend holiday destinations for many Melburnians, but now also popular golf destinations for short and long stays. For interstate visitors, a golf tour combining both Peninsulas will be a great golfing adventure and a tour to remember. On a 7 or 10 night golf trip you could play a different golf course everyday, or include other leisure activities such as wine touring, sailing, fishing, swimming, diving, or plan a day tour along Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean road and take in the sights of the coastal townships of Lorne, Apollo Bay and Port Campbell.

Mornington Peninsula

(East Coast)

Moonah Links Peter Thomson Drive, Fingal Located in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula, Moonah Links is regarded as the “Home of Australian Golf”. Moonah Links was host venue for the 2003 and 2005 Australian Opens and now host to the “Moonah Classic” – a new co-sanctioned Australasian PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour tournament held this year between 21-24 February with one of the largest prize pools on the Nationwide Tour totalling AUD$850,000. This annual tournament is scheduled to return again to Moonah Links in 2009 and 2010. This state of the art facility has two 18-hole Championship courses: “The Open” designed by Peter Thomson and “The Legends” designed by Ross Perrett. The “Open Course”, was designed specifically for a National Championship, offering spectacular viewing and is one of the longest courses in Australia. At 6,829 metres from the black tees, this Championship course boasts a natural stadium layout with undulating fairways of pure couch grass, punctuated with pot bunkers and leading onto large multi-tiered greens. At 5,881 from the white tees, this course can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels and superior course conditions ensure year round playability. In contrast to the Open course, the “Legends Course” offers a more friendly golfing experience for players of all ages and abilities. The course is a loop of 18 holes that generally follow the surrounding valleys through a variety of landscapes including the Moonah Woodlands to the open links land. The fairways are generous and the putting surfaces gentle, but the bunkering style is bold and wild in appearance. At 6,320 metres, the course is fun but won’t be a pushover. The name “Moonah Links” was actually derived from the ancient “Moonah Trees” which are indigenous to the area and Victoria’s Coastal regions. This spectacular tree is a prominent feature and adds a distinctive Australian character to the “Links” style and design at Moonah Links. Both courses are public-access enabling golfers of all levels to enjoy this outstanding facility all year round. Eagle Ridge Golf Club Browns Road, The Cups This private club’s historic origins date back to 1907 when it was formerly known as The Sorrento and Portsea Golf Club. This 18-hole course is a well-groomed hilly course, with all-year round playability, set on a sand and limestone base. Its generous fairways and roughs are surrounded by densely wooded plantations, and the bent grass greens will ensure a challenging experience. In particular, the par 3’s are a feature at Sorrento and the 2nd hole is one of the best. The green is narrow at the front with deep bunkers on the right side and a hollow on the left. A difficult green to hit as the wind is usually against or across - par is a good score here! Voted in 2003 as one of Australia’s “Top 25 Public Access Golf Courses” by readers of Golf Magazine. Portsea Golf Club, Relph Avenue, Portsea Designed by renowned golf architect, Tony Cashmore, the Dunes Golf Links has been ranked as high as #17 in Australia and voted #1 public access course in Australia by readers of Golf Magazine. Set amidst more than 150 hectares of rolling coastal sand hills in ‘The Cups’ region of the Mornington Peninsula, the 27-hole golf facility at The Dunes is regarded as one of Australia’s premier public access golf courses.

Established in 1923, this private 18-hole Championship Course has been rated within the Top 25 private golf courses in Australia. The course is set amongst rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation with spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay and has been host to several prestigious amateur and professional events such as the Victorian Open, Victorian Amateur Championship, and the Australian Interstate Teams Championship. The most famous tournament on the club’s golfing calendar is the annual Portsea ProAm held in January each year. Recent design improvements combined with strategic bunkering, undulating Santa Ana couch fairways and slick greens make Portsea an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all standards. The 18-hole Championship course has been designed to exploit the natural beauty of the terrain, whilst providing a true test of skill and judgment for golfers of every level. At 6,409 metres in length, the sloping fairways meander through undulating knolls and ridges, leading to expansive greens that are typically sheltered in a natural amphitheatre or exposed on elevated promontories to the full force of the elements. Another glorious feature of the course, the trademark natural bunkering and prevalence of native grasses ensure every aspect of your game is relentlessly challenged, with the rough tormenting any player who ventures wide of the fairway. The constantly changing contours ensure that each hole is as individual as they are demanding, while the unpredictable weather of Bass Strait further accentuates the rich and varied character of The Dunes Golf Links. The 9-hole Cups course is a delightful par 33 and very popular with juniors and local residents and a great facility for all the family. ACT, Gold Creek Country Club, Friday 14th March 2008 – ACT State Qualifying Event Our 2008 ACT State Qualifying Event was held for the 2nd year at Gold Creek Country Club, a popular choice by ACT members. Brett Ogle joined us for this auspicious occasion and was certainly in fine form for this competition round. Pre-event, players enjoyed product demonstrations on the driving range by Callaway and Titleist. On the putting green, TaylorMade presented their latest release of the new “TaylorMade Burner Golf Ball” and all players received a complimentary sample of the Burner golf ball to trial on-course. Flexiway (National Event Series Major Sponsor) also attended the event, sponsoring a Long Drive competition on the day and also provided complimentary golf balls at registration for all players. Oakley also joined us out on course, sponsoring a NTP and product promotion of their latest range of Oakley eyewear and footwear. On the day we had a final field of 53 players and the competition round concluded with a sumptuous BBQ lunch to celebrate the winning scores. Congratulations to our Winner of the Individual Stableford Competition and our 2008 ACT State Finalist, Stephen Frost (shown left with Brett Ogle), with a score of 46 points. Stephen is also an ACT State and District Cricketer.

Anthony,

Anthony,

Thank you for advising of my recent win in the Drummond’s golf day at St Andrew’s Beach (29/2/08). It is the first I have won so all those lessons with Mark Allen and Brian Fitzgerald are paying off!! I better give them some of the wine that I have won.

Just a quick thank you for last Friday’s event (ACT Gold Creek 14/3/08).

In fact a group of us are off in April with Mark Allen and David Wren to play Torrey Pines, watch the US Masters and then play Pebble Beach. How good is that ! Can’t wait. I had a good time with Tony, Jason and Lung (pronounced Loo!) and we believe that St Andrew’s Beach is like driving a Maserati and is right up there with the other good fun courses and pretty hard as well. Thanks again Anthony, book me in for the next one! Paul Fraser (VIC)

We Hi Anthony, can’t wait until the next event. Just a quick note to say what a great job Rod, Drummond Golf Fyshwick (ACT) you did at Macquaire Links the other day (26/2/2008). From start to finish the day was •••••••••• perfect. G’Day Lee, Thanks again for organising a fantastic day at Meadow Springs in WA, the lads and I had a great time, the accommodation (at Seashells Resort Mandurah) was top notch too. My mozzi bites are driving me crazy today at

See you in Canberra on the 14th March! Regards Paul Theodore (NSW)

2008 Drummond Club Social Golf Days Throughout 2008, Drummond Club members can also enjoy participating in a series of “social club events” in all states. Members and guests are welcome, and the emphasis is a fun competition and social day where groups of 4 can enjoy playing as a team and compete in both our Individual and Team Stableford competitions. WA, Mandurah: Meadow Springs Golf Club, Sunday 18th February 2008 A capacity “sell-out” field of 144 players joined us for our first event of the 2008 season and first WA event at Meadow Springs Golf Club located in Mandurah (just 1 hour south of Perth CBD). Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, this Championship course was one of the first resort style golf courses to be established in WA in the early 1990’s and is regarded as one of WA’s premier public access courses. Fine weather conditions prevailed on the day and pre-event, players enjoyed a warm-up on the driving range and the opportunity to test-drive the latest golf equipment from Callaway, PING, Wilson, and Cleveland. Titliest also provided a FREE golf ball fitting and a bonus 2-ball Titleist sample pack for all players.

A notable arrival on the day and making a stunning entrance, was “Mr” Lindsay Taylor (Drummond Golf WA Staff ) wearing a custom made “pink” skirt with matching shirt and cap! Keeping with traditions in the West, the staff member with the lowest score from the previous event is required to dress in a pink ensemble of their choice. Unfortunately for Lindsay he has won this prestigious prize now for the 2nd time in a row, so we look forward to seeing his next fashionable creation at our WA event in May at the Vines. Also joining us on the day was Chris Fox from McLaren Vale III Associates (Drummond Club Winery Partner and Event Sponsor). After the competition round, Chris provided players with complimentary glasses of wine to sample their latest release of “Squid Ink and Four Play” Shiraz from McLaren Vale SA. Big “gutsy McLaren Vale reds” were a fitting finish to a great competition round and our special thanks to Chris for his participation and generous support on the day. Congratulations to Aaron Newman (shown left with David Been Drummond Golf WA). Individual Stableford Winner with a score of 44 points. Aaron was also our 2006 WA State Finalist. 1st Place Team Stableford Division went to Bob O’Neil, Natalie & Mark Stephens and Bruce Crombie. Score 56 points.

NSW, Sydney: Macquarie Links International Golf Club, Thursday 26th February 2008 Our first NSW event for the 2008 season was held at Macquarie Links International Golf Club. Macquarie Links is a private golf club and the course layout and design is based on a traditional “links” style and offers a challenging experience for all levels. This venue has been a popular choice by NSW members each year and so we returned once again to kick off our NSW events for our 4th season at this Championship course. A full field of 120 players participated on the day and pre-event, players enjoyed product demonstrations by TaylorMade, Callaway and Wilson. The competition round concluded with a sumptuous BBQ buffet lunch enjoyed by all and the final scores on the day reflected a tight competition in both the Individual and Team Stableford divisions. Congratulations to Craig Layton, Individual Stableford Winner with a score of 42 points on countback. 1st Place Team Stableford Division went to Jim Murphy, Craig Layton, Kevin Wortes and Jason Braund (Drummond Golf Dee Why). Score 55 points

VIC, Mornington Peninsula: St Andrews Golf Club, Friday 29th February 2008 We ventured down to Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula for our first VIC social event for the 2008 season at St Andrews Golf Club, located in the famous “Cups” region on the Mornington Peninsula. St Andrews is the latest golf course development on the Peninsula, designed by internationally renowned golf course architect Tom Doak. The course and has been carefully crafted taking full advantage of the natural landscape with a layout similar to the great “Links” coastal courses in the United Kingdom. Access by non-members is strictly limited, however we had the opportunity invite a group of 60 Drummond Club members and guests to enjoy a social event and competition round on this challenging course. Certainly a great experience and opportunity for members. Congratulations to Paul Fraser, Individual Stableford Winner with a score of 39 points.

DAVID SCHWARZ: Golf after the AFL You only need to spend a few moments with Former AFL star and Melbourne Football Club vice captain David Schwarz to realise that he is not just another elite sportsperson who has taken a keen interest in golf, but rather, he is possessed by the ‘golfing bug’ and seriously passionate about this great sport. Mention the word golf and he is practically ready to drop everything to talk about it, to watch it and to play it. If he could play every day he would and in fact at times puts this into practice. In many ways his positive attitude towards the sport, his devotion to play it and the shear delight he expresses when discussing it make him a terrific ambassador for the game of golf.

I would trade in my 2000 AFL Grand Final appearance to be a scratch handicap golfer David Schwarz

10

www.drummondclub.com

Recruited from Sunbury, David made his AFL debut in 1991 for the Melbourne Football Club. Nicknamed “the Ox” for his beast-like build and bullocking nature, he was a great centre half-forward or full-forward and in 1994 took more marks than AFL great Wayne Carey. He was touted as one of the games next superstars until tragically he suffered 3 serious knee injuries requiring knee re-constructions between February 1995 and February 1996. He was out of the game until mid 1997. Although struck down he returned to the field and as a testament to his remarkable courage and determination was selected in the Victorian State of Origin Team in 1999. In the same year he also won the Melbourne Football Club Best & Fairest. David retired in 2002 having played 173 games and kicked 253 goals. Post AFL, David has forged a career in sports media which now sees him sharing commitments between being a member of the Channel Seven AFL Commentary team along with Bruce McAvaney & Dennis Cometti and with Melbourne Radio sports station SEN 1116 where he conducts the Run Home program from 4pm7pm Monday to Friday. David says “The team at SEN are fantastic, I am passionate about sport in general although I will admit when I get the chance we will discuss golf as much as possible.” David’s interest in playing golf began as a 12 year old back in 1984 where he would collect golf balls from the trees and scrub around the Goonawarra Golf Course. “We didn’t have much money in those days”, he reflects, “so I would go out and collect up to 400 balls a week, sell them for 50 cents to $1 each. This paid for my first set of golf clubs and green fees.” He recalls his first game of golf at Gisborne Golf Club, “I vividly remember standing on the first tee thinking that this would be easy as I was able to pick most sports up successfully. I then proceeded to top the ball off the tee and most of the way around to a score of around 160. I kept trying to lift the ball off the ground and subsequently it caused me to hit the ball on the head all day.” This stark awakening did not deter him as he played whenever and wherever he could including on the local footy oval. Since this raw introduction to golf there were a couple of short periods of time away from the game. One such period occurred during his playing days with the Melbourne footy club and highlights how an elite sporting career can impede your day to day life. David reminisces, “A few of us at the club started to play regularly as a social escape from footy. However on one particular occasion we got together and played 18 holes on the morning of a match day. Later that evening we were thumped by our opposition and the footy club banned us from playing golf for a while. I guess they felt that walking the 18 holes was not good for our legs and therefore our footy. Fortunately this was relaxed soon after when golf carts became available at various golf courses.” These days David plays around 70 rounds per year which is made up of approximately 20 corporate events plus a weekly social game every Thursday morning. He states, “My Thursday game of golf is vital to create a balanced lifestyle between work, family and some time just for me. The golf course is a great place to think, to contemplate and put into perspective things

happening in other areas of your life. You learn a lot about yourself.” A member at Keysborough Golf Club, Eynesbury Golf Course & Settlers Run, David presently plays off a handicap of 8 and has a goal to be off a 5 handicap by Christmas. He has experienced the joy of shooting under par and rates his best round, a 71 off the stick at Moonah Links, Legends Course in 2006. Like many of us, David is drawn to the sport like an addiction. “I gave up the punt and took up golf”, he laughs. “Golf is the only sport I couldn’t take up and perform well at straight away. I had to really work at it. One moment you think you have a hold on it and then the next shot you schanck it into the scrub and realise that ‘no’ the game has hold of you.” There is no doubt that David’s competitive nature lured him to golf. He wants to defeat the golf course and anyone he plays with… in a friendly way though. As he stands on the tee ready to blast another 260m plus drive, the focus and steely desire remind you of the determined young man lining up from the 50m arc in front of goal during a big game day. Surprisingly though, it is mainly the lifestyle aspects of the sport that fuel David’s passion to play. He says, “Socially it is fantastic, handicaps assist everyone to all play together. You can play in a group of four either with friends or to meet up with new people. I have met some great people at corporate days and identified that playing golf can also be a wonderful networking tool. It’s the serenity, tranquillity of being out there. You might play footy but you don’t travel to Queensland to see a footy ground, but with golf you can travel intrastate, interstate & overseas and visit incredible golf courses and destinations, golf is reasonably unique in that way. I have been fortunate to travel and play golf in Hawaii, Las Vegas, Spain & Thailand plus we make regular visits with friends and family to the

I gave up the punt and took up golf

Gold Coast golf courses and an annual getaway over the Melbourne Cup weekend to the Murray River region where we can all blend plenty of golf with some winery inspections.” David is also planning a group golfing tour to New Zealand later this year to play Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs. He rates his most memorable golfing experience as playing 9 holes with Ernie Els & 18 holes with Sergio Garcia during the Pro Am at the 2002 Johnny Walker Classic at The Vines, WA. He says “Their ball striking was incredible, they could make the ball move as they liked and they were both great people to play with.” During our conversation he boldly stated “I would trade in my 2000 AFL Grand Final appearance to be a scratch handicap golfer” and then immediately expanded further, “I would trade my AFL career for a career as a pro golfer”. The longevity of playing career, low injury risk, travel experience, financial rewards where the main reasons given but also having played a team sport he acknowledged that it would be good to play an individual sport where your own decisions only affect yourself.

ALL OTHER DETAILS REMAIN THE SAME.

Wayne joined Sara and David Breen at Drummond Golf in Western Australia in August 2003. December that year, the Cannington store was opened, which is where Wayne currently manages. With 15 years experience in the golf industry and after two years as Professional Golf Trainee at Collier Park and Wanneroo Golf Courses, Wayne joined Precision Golf Forging Pty Ltd and remained with them for nearly nine years as a company representative. Wayne’s keen interest in golf started in Victoria in 1986. Having followed his father and uncle around the golf course on a few occasions, the bug bit and after two years of junior golf at the Werribee Park Golf Club, he and his family moved to Perth where he and his younger brother Lance joined the Wanneroo Golf Club. Following a second and third place in the Wanneroo and Joondalup Junior Opens, with a hole in one the highlight, Wayne went on to represent the club in junior and senior pennant sides for the next ten years and also played in numerous tournaments around the state. With a handicap of one Wayne commenced a PGA Traineeship at the Wanneroo Golf Club only to find that his real calling was in the sales area of the golf industry, and following nine years in the golf wholesale industry he was head-hunted to join David and Sara in their Drummond Golf Franchise venture in Western Australia. Having purchased his first ever golf bag from the Drummond Golf city store in Melbourne it must have been fate. So why not call in at Cannington and experience the Drummond Golf way. Wayne and his staff are more than happy to help you lift your game.

Cover Yourself Against Skin Cancer Pictures and content courtesy of Fiona Pike and the The Cancer Council South Australia

Fiona Pike, Raising Awareness About Skin Cancer Retired professional golfer and good friend Fiona Pike launched the Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness campaign during the recent Australian Women’s Open at Kingston Heath. In support of this, players and caddies wore the campaign badge during the tournament rounds. Fiona is calling on all golfers to take the lifestyle steps to properly protect their skin and to check their skin every three months. “For more than 13 years I enjoyed an endless summer following the professional golf tour across the globe which included career highlights of 3rd in the British Open, runner-up in the Italian Open and mixing it with the best on the ladies tour in the United States. In 2005, shortly after retiring from professional golf, doctors found a deep skull-based tumor which was eventually diagnosed as melanoma. Even though my tumor did not present as a skin lesion that could have been screened, tested or detected, more than 99 per cent of melanomas do present on the skin surface. I have undergone a major operation to cut out much of the tumor followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The cancer has spread to other parts of my body. I don’t want any other golfer to experience this terrible disease. We are all at a significantly increased risk of skin cancer and we need to be vigilant in protecting our skin and checking for changes. It can only take 15 minutes to burn and a few burns in a lifetime to cause skin cancer, but usually cumulative exposure (including tanning) is the most common cause of skin cancer. This mostly preventable disease can be picked up early by checking your own skin and having any changes seen by a doctor, so please join my campaign and reduce the skin cancer risk.”

Did You Know? Two in three Australians will develop skin cancer at some time during their lives and more than 1,600 Australians will die each year from the disease. The major cause of melanoma and other skin cancers is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation is not related to temperature so even on a cool overcast day UV levels can be high.

Fiona’s Sun Protection Tips for Golfers To minimise your risk, when the UV Index reaches three or above, a combination of these skin protection measures is recommended: 1. Seek shade where possible or use umbrellas while waiting on the tee and when walking between shots and holes. 2. Choose golfing attire that covers as much skin as possible – long sleeved tops, long pants and golfing gloves. 3. A suitable hat (e.g. bucket style) that provides protection to your face, neck and ears but still allows you the freedom to swing through your shots. 4. Choose sunglasses that are wraparound in style and have an Eye Protection Factor (EPF) of 10. 5. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to all exposed skin before going onto the course, using at least one teaspoon full on each arm and leg, and ½ teaspoon for your face, neck and ears. 6. Keep sunscreen in a cool place. Reapply when walking to the next tee box or during slow play. Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours. 7. Remember when you are wiping off sweat you are wiping off sunscreen, so you may need to reapply more regularly. Carry a separate towel to keep hands clean.

Early Detection of Melanomas and Other Skin Cancers

Skin cancers see your doctor

1. The most important factor in surviving skin cancer is early detection. Carefully check all your skin (including areas which are not exposed to sunlight) at the change of every season.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

2. You should check all of your skin every three months and see a general practitioner if you notice any changes.

• Sunburn and tanning will significantly increase your risk of skin cancer

3. Look for spots that have changed in colour, shape or size and see your doctor if you notice any changes.

• M elanoma can occur on parts of the body that are difficult to see, even those that haven’t been exposed to the sun.

What to Look For

• A melanoma can become life threatening in as little as six weeks.

These are examples only. If you notice any changes see your doctor.

• More than 95% of melanomas are treatable if caught early. If you would like to make a donation to the Fiona Pike Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign. Posture

European Tour Event Winner & 7 Events World Wide Teaching Professional at Patterson River Country Club Golf Magazine Instructor

Good posture (body position) at the address position and maintained throughout the golf swing provides the solid foundation for consistent and successful shot making. It also allows for balance and timing in the golf swing. This golf feature courtesy of Golf Magazine April 2008

2 3

AT ADDRESS DOWN THE LINE Follow these important steps to create good golf posture 1. Distribute your weight evenly into the balls of your feet, avoid the toes or heels 2. Bend from the waist and maintain a relatively straight spine angle

5

3. Keep your head up to maintain the spine angle. It allows you to turn freely during the golf swing 4. Slightly flex your knees 5. Allow your arms to hang down naturally from the body creating clear space between the end of the club and your body

3 AT ADDRESS FRONT ON

2

1. Feet slightly wider than shoulder width 2. Lead shoulder set higher 3. Head tilts slightly back with the spine angle

1 SPECIAL TIP You may have been told that at your address position to feel as though you are sitting on a stool or chair. This helps to get the feeling of bending from your hips or waist. On the practice fairway a convenient way to achieve this feeling and position is to simply place one of your clubs behind you and rest against it.

A Traveller’s Diary by Lee Midson: If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to travel to Thailand, then a great golfing adventure awaits you! Thailand is certainly one of Asia’s most exotic destinations with over 200 golf courses throughout the popular tourist destinations of Pattaya, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Pattaya Golf Tour, 7-18 March:

I joined a recent group golf tour to Pattaya (March 08) coordinated by Thai Golf Tours travelling together with Drummond Club members and their accompanying family and friends. DAY 1: Friday 7 March Arrival: Land in Bangkok at 8am after an overnight direct flight via Thai Airways from Melbourne (a 9hr flight) and then coach transfer from Bangkok to Pattaya, approximately 2 hrs. Bangkok is one of Asia’s busiest cities with over 30 million people, so traffic conditions can be chaotic and delays can be expected. However, we had a good run en route to Pattaya. Our home for the duration of this tour was Sabai Lodge Pattaya, an affordable hotel conveniently located in the centre of Pattaya and just a short 5 minute walk to the Beachfront Promenade and local restaurants. The hotel has 3 swimming pools, all rooms are air-conditioned with cable TV, mini-bars and serviced daily. For dining you have hundreds of local restaurants to choose from or the hotel’s on-site restaurant and the menu selection is excellent.

DAY 2: Saturday 8 March Free Day: Opportunity to explore the local surrounds and enjoy some local sightseeing. I took a small group on a day trip to experience an Elephant ride and trek through the river and forest. The tour included a bullock and cart ride, raft ride down stream and lunch – approx AUD$50 pp. DAY 5: Tuesday 11 March Tournament Round 2, Laem Chabang International Country Club: This 27-hole golf course was designed by the Nicklaus group and has 3 nine holes of the highest standard and all different in character, Mountain, Lake and Creek. Laem Chabang is certainly one of the most challenging course layouts, with lakes, pools and streams posing major threats to stray shots and without a doubt one of the most scenic courses in the Pattaya region. DAY 6: Wednesday 12 March Free Day: Most golfers took-up the opportunity to play an extra round and a social team event was organised at Siam Country Club. Others chose to take the day off for some local sight-seeing to visit “Sriracha Tiger Zoo” which has over 200 Bengal Tigers and 100,000 crocodiles or “Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens” where you can see local Thai cultural shows and display of Thai orchards and palm gardens. Thai cooking classes are also available. DAY 7: Thursday 13 March Tournament Round 3, Burapha (East Course): Formerly a private member’s club, Burapha Golf Club has hosted several Thai amateur tournaments and offers 2 x 18 hole

Championship golf courses. The 2 courses at Burapha have been designed to take full advantage of the beauty of the land and its natural features – lakes, hills, mature mangoes, coco palms and tropical vegetation, all enhanced by skilful landscaping. The East Course features wide fairways and is well suited for golfers of all levels. DAY 8: Friday 14 March Tournament Round 4, Greenwood Golf and Resort: Designed by Dennis Wolveridge and Peter Thomson, this 18-hole golf course is dotted with characteristic pot bunkers and areas of “native” lemon grass, which require particular skills to escape from first time. There are also many strategically placed sand traps. Whilst there is minimal use of water hazards there is clever use of reeds and heavy rough - rated as one of the best in Pattaya.

was excellent. Our special thanks to Mark Penfold and his staff for their overall organization and expert assistance on tour. NB: The level of English spoken by most local hospitality staff throughout Pattaya is minimal, and there is a need to be patient and respectful of local Thai customs and culture. Overall, this is a tour that offers excellent value for the price. For first timers like me, you’ll be amazed at the hustle and bustle and sights and sounds of Pattaya’s busy tourist strip, but it will be an experience where you will meet new friends and enjoy some great golfing together!

This area is little quieter than the hustle and bustle of Pattaya’s main beach front and a great night out. DAY 11: Monday 17 March Tournament Round 6, Competition Final, Green Valley: This 18 hole course was designed by Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge and is a “links style” course, beautifully landscaped and is set amongst the gentle sloping hillside, with large rocky outcrops and boulders, watercourses and an abundance of mature trees and colourful flora. The top 8 players with the highest stableford points overall (best 3 scores), then played off for the title of Overall Individual Stableford Champion at this final round with additional prizes for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. A separate prize division was awarded to the leading score for the Women’s Individual Stableford Division also. I scheduled a separate “Team Stableford Competition” on this day with a prize pool allocated for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Our eventual winners were “Team Albatross” with a score of 55 points. The day concluded with a “Presentation Dinner” to award winners, trophies and prizes. Additional novelty prizes were awarded to outstanding performances recognised on and off-course such as: Best Hat, Best Dressed, Most Courageous, Best Mascot, Good Sport and Night Owl Award… just to name a few. DAY 12: Tuesday 18 March Departure: Coach transfer from Pattaya to Bangkok for return flight to Australia. Arrival back in Melbourne was 10:00pm. Comments Operationally the tournament, daily coach transfers between resort and golf course and organized tee-times all went very smoothly. The resort accommodation was comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere and the daily breakfasts and catering at the resort
