Fellow golfers, I urge you, take the necessary precautions to protect yourself appropriately against skin cancer, if you are not already that is. Discussing skin cancer is not a ‘good feel’ or popular subject. For those of us who have been affected it can be distressing to say the least and for those not yet affected there can be a naïve belief, ‘it’s not going to happen to me’. Let me be blunt. If you choose not to adhere to some of the simple protective measures listed in this feature, you ARE increasing your risk of developing a skin cancer. Statistically 2 out of 3 Australians will develop skin cancer during their life and it attacks without discrimination, and I should know.

wordsfromthetop Joining Michael in the north of Tasmania in Launceston is Bill and Margaret Husband. Bill does not need any introduction to Tasmanians as he has been somewhat of a teaching legend in the Apple Isle for many years. Bill has spent the last three months renovating his York Street store in Launceston to provide customers in the north with a shopping experience second to none. Our sixteenth store in Victoria was formally the Golf Works store in Burwood and was recently purchased by a syndicate headed by Peter Lindsay, a long term employee of the Dandenong franchisee. With over five years golf retail experience Peter will be our franchisee for the Burwood and surrounding area. The store purchase in Burwood was possible with the relocation of our Chadstone franchise to the Princes Highway in East Malvern. We wish Danny Dawson and Alan Bult all the best in their newly relocated superstore.

elcome to the seventeenth edition of Beyond the Fairways. A big thank you must go to Jodi who tirelessly works behind the scenes to help produce the "inside your Drummond Golf store" section of this magazine. October is an important month for amateur golf in Australia with the Eisenhower Cup returning to our shores. It is without doubt the most prestigious amateur team event in the world of golf. It will be held in Adelaide this year with Drummond Golf having a special interest.
Western Australia was allocated its third store in early October when Jarrod Mosley and Ian Taylor opened their first franchise in Mandurah. Ian Taylor has been a golf professional for over ten years and has been working in the eastern states for the last few years. He returns home to Western Australia to partner up with Jarrod who is well known to Western Australians as a touring professional with his great win in the 1999 Heineken Classic, well remembered by many Australians. Jarrod will continue with his commitment to tournament golf and will from time to time assist his wife Danielle together with Ian in the Mandurah store. Good luck to Ian, Jarrod and their respective partners Remy and Danielle.
This year Matt Griffin is representing Australia and he is currently ranked the fifth best amateur in the world. Matt’s relationship with Drummond Golf goes back some years. He first started part-time work with us as a promising young golfer while attending secondary school and continued this throughout his tertiary education. Over the last year, Matt has spent a lot of time playing golf interstate and overseas with his state and national team commitments. As we keenly follow this years Eisenhower Cup, we wish Matt and the rest of his team all the best.
Port Macquarie will be the new home for Darren and Treena Henderson who are currently fitting out and stocking their new superstore in Hastings River Drive. Darren is a single figure golfer who has spent some time in our Melbourne stores gaining valuable experience. We wish Darren and Treena all the best with their new store as they prepare for an opening in late October or early November.
October is a prestigious month for us with the opening of five new stores taking us to forty four stores nationally. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome five new franchisees to the Drummond Golf team.
We wish all the Drummond Golf members a great summer of golfing and hope you enjoy this edition of Beyond the Fairways.
Michael Jordan, originally from Scottsdale, Tasmania has worked at our Cheltenham store for over two years gaining valuable experience. He returns to Tasmania to open his own franchise just a few minutes from Hobart. This new superstore is the largest golf store in Tasmania and provides all the major brands and prices from the mainland. adam

Be Aware, Take Action &
Be Sun Smart By Sam Gole
The golf course can be an unforgiving environment. Laden with hazards such as bunkers, water, tricky greens and of course don’t forget the elements such as the wind, rain, humidity and heat. But these hazards pale into insignificance when compared with the greatest danger to all golfers, The Sun. It may be necessary for the existence of life, however it has a sinister side, resulting in numerous Australians diagnosed with various skin diseases every year.
The Ugly side of ‘golfers tan’ Your Skin
campaign badge during the tournament rounds.
Fiona is calling on all golfers to take the lifestyle steps to properly protect their skin and to check their skin every three months. Her story in brief is as follows. “In 2005, shortly after retiring from professional golf, doctors found a deep skullbased tumour which was eventually diagnosed as melanoma. Even though my tumour did not present as a skin lesion that could have been screened, tested or detected, more than 99 per cent of melanomas do present on the skin surface. I have undergone a major operation to cut out much of the tumour followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The cancer has spread to other parts of my body. I don’t want any other golfer to experience this terrible disease. We are all at a significantly increased risk of skin cancer and we need to be vigilant in protecting our skin and checking for changes. It can only take 15 minutes to burn and a few burns in a lifetime to cause skin

cancer, but usually cumulative exposure (including tanning) is the most common cause of skin cancer. This mostly preventable disease can be picked up early by checking your own skin and having any changes seen by a doctor, so please join my campaign and reduce the skin cancer risk.” In addition to this I have my own story and example. Not as grave as Fiona’s but nonetheless real. After having a skin lesion removed from the top of my left hand in May last year it was detected that I had squamous cell carcinoma. If left untouched, this form of skin cancer will spread the cancer to other parts of the body with potentially lethal consequences. It appears as though my lesion and cancer was removed in time. However my surgery required a skin graft. Now I have a large scar under my bicep and a scar the size of a fifty cent piece on my affected hand that act as constant reminders of the dangers of the sun. As you can imagine I am more vigilant in protecting
www.drummondclub.com
myself against sunburn and exposure. I also regularly attend a Skin Cancer Clinic. On my first visit I undertook a procedure called mole mapping which involves a sequence of images to be taken of my skin. These images act as a reference point for future visits from which to detect any changes and potential dangers. Late last year during one of my regular check ups, my doctor detected the onset of another squamous cell cancer in my right ear. In this instance a simple procedure in the clinic removed the danger. Unfortunately similar stories to these occur in families across Australia in alarming numbers each year. It may have happened to you, a family member, someone you know or a playing companion at your golf club. Please take heed of the facts and statistics over the page, protect yourself at golf from this summer on, see your GP or a certified skin cancer specialist regularly and spread the message to your family and friends. >>

Skin Cancer Facts and Figures,
Did You Know? • Two in three Australians will develop skin cancer at some time during their lives and more than 1,600 Australians will die each year from the disease. • The major cause of melanoma and other skin cancers is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
Early Detection of Melanomas and Other Skin Cancers You should check all of your skin every three months and see a general practitioner if you notice any changes. The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement or even death. It is also a good idea to talk to your doctor about your level of risk and for advice on early detection.

• Sunburn and tanning will significantly increase your risk of skin cancer. • Melanoma can occur on parts of the body that are difficult to see, even those that haven’t been exposed to the sun. • A melanoma can become life threatening in as little as six weeks. • More than 95% of melanomas are treatable if caught early.

Look for: • any crusty, non-healing sores • small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour • new spots, freckles or any moles changing in colour, thickness or shape over a period of weeks to months (especially those dark brown to black, red or blue-black in colour). Sun Protection Tips for Golfers To minimise your risk, when the UV Index reaches three or above, a combination of these skin protection measures is recommended: 1. Seek shade where possible or use umbrellas with UV protection while waiting on the tee and when walking between shots and holes. 2. Choose golfing attire that covers as much skin as possible – UV rated apparel, long sleeved tops, long pants and golfing gloves. 3. A suitable hat (e.g. bucket style) that provides protection to your face, neck and ears but still allows you the freedom to swing through your shots. 12 | Beyond the Fairways - Spring / Summer 2008
4. Choose sunglasses that are wraparound in style and have an Eye Protection Factor (EPF) of 10. 5. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to all exposed skin before going onto the course, using at least one teaspoon full on each arm and leg, and ½ teaspoon for your face, neck and ears. 6. Keep sunscreen in a cool place. Reapply when walking to the next tee box or during slow play. Sunscreen should be applied at least every two hours. 7. Remember when you are wiping off sweat you are wiping off sunscreen, so you may need to reapply more regularly. Carry a separate towel to keep hands clean. www.drummondclub.com

Being sun smart doesn't end with the skin. Our eyes are vital organs that must be protected. Many of us don’t think twice about wearing our sunglasses when we go outdoors for a walk, to the beach or when driving our car. However, many of us don’t take the care to protect our eyes from the harsh ultraviolet rays absorbed for up to 5 hours whilst on the golf course. Not only will an appropriate pair of sunglasses be beneficial to our long term health, they will also provide an immediate benefit to our well being whilst on the golf course. Golfers are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which comprises invisible high energy rays from the sun that lie just beyond the blue end of the visible spectrum. More than 99% of UV radiation is absorbed by the anterior structures of the eye. There are good scientific reasons to be concerned that UV absorption by the eye may contribute to age-related changes in the eye and a number of serious eye diseases. Ultraviolet radiation can play a contributory role in the development of various ocular disorders including cataract, pterygium, cancer of the skin around the eye, photokeratitis and corneal degenerative changes, and may contribute to age-related macular degeneration. Ultraviolet absorbing eyewear provides the greatest measure of UV protection, particularly if it has a wraparound design to limit the
sun, sunglasses that absorb 99–100 per cent of the full UV spectrum to 400 nm are recommended. The cost to protect your eyes with a pair of premium sunglasses is minimal when compared with the benefits you will receive in the long-run. Sunglasses provide essential eye protection! They are not just a fashion accessory, but a necessity when it comes to maintaining healthy eyes and good quality vision.

GIRLS GREAT GOLF GETAWAY
NOOSA SPRINGS RESORT, QLD
By Lee Midson
In response to the increasing interest expressed by our female members for programs tailored to suit female golfers, we launched our first “Girls Great Golf Getaway” to Noosa Springs Resort (14 – 19 September 2008). This program was created to incorporate both a leisure aspect and a 3-day coaching program specifically for women with coaching provided by our Drummond Club coach, Nadene Gole. Choosing the right venue and location for this golf getaway meant specific criteria had to be considered! Key points – must have a warm sunny climate to shake off the winter blues, great shopping outlets for those in need of retail therapy, spa and massage services for some serious pampering, a good choice of quality restaurants and a resort that could provide comfortable and relaxed accommodation with excellent golf and resort facilities. Noosa Springs Resort ticked all the boxes and the response was overwhelming.
26 ladies from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle joined the program. Some participants had only just recently taken up golf, others had been playing for a few years or longer, but all were keen to improve their game and benefit from the personalised coaching provided in the program. Plus, it was a great opportunity to get away with “the girls” for a short break!
Our Accommodation Noosa Springs Resort was the perfect venue for our stay. The Resort has 2 and 3 bedroom apartments suitable for twin, triple and quad-share. The apartments are set in a natural bushland setting with views over the golf course and the ambience is peaceful and relaxing. Each spacious apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, king size beds, separate lounge and dining areas, LCD TV and cable television, DVD/CD player, laundry area, 2 private balconies and area ideal for group golf tours.
The Golf Course Just a short stroll from the accommodation is the Noosa Springs Resort golf course. This 18-hole championship course is regarded as one of the best resort courses in Queensland. The course meanders along the shores of the tranquil Lake Weyba and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Noosa National Park. The fairways are lush, and the greens are meticulously manicured. Other facilities include driving range, putting green, chipping and bunker areas.

Pamper Sessions After a day on the golf course, it didn’t take much prompting to book in for a hydro massage and steam session, or seek total relaxation in the floatation pool. Others opted for a relaxation massage and other spa treatments such as manicures and pedicures, or just some time out soaking up the sun around the pool. The resort management provided all

BUNKERS
Putting an End to Every Golfer's Nightmare by Nadene Gole, Golf Professional European Tour Event Winner & 7 Events World Wide, Teaching Professional at Patterson River Country Club and Golf Magazine Instructor.
For many the bunker shot represents the most feared and possibly the most misunderstood shot in golf. The truth is that most elite golfers would actually prefer this rather than the alternative of the ball finding the greenside rough. The reason for this is that generally speaking you will be presented with a relatively good lie. By following a few simple fundamentals your bunker play will become more consistent and you will start to enjoy the challenge of the sand game.
Priorities During Bunker Play The following will provide a reliable execution out of the bunker every shot

Relax your grip pressure, soft hands promote and enable the wrists to hinge and re-hinge. Develop a backswing similar to a pitching action.
PIC 4 Learn to splash the sand out of the bunker, strike the sand approximately 3-5 cm behind the ball.
PIC 5 Maintain an open clubface throughout impact & accelerate through the sand.
Special Tip When practicing, draw a line 3-5cm behind the ball and a box around the golf ball. The line highlights the clubheads point of entry in to the sand. Focus on removing the sand from the box thus allowing the ball to splash from the bunker in a soft manner. www.drummondclub.com

Dr. Paul Hurrion A Scientific Approach to Putting By Sam Gole Remember all those putts that Padraig Harrington holed on the final nine of the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills? Recognition was forthcoming as players noticed the difference he brought to their game. Hurrion explains how he became involved with analysing putting, “I’ve always liked golf. I played mostly cricket and other athletics, but I had a bad injury so I started playing more golf. I got down to scratch about the time I got my Ph. D. Dr Hurrion states, “The next innovation in golf is the body and optimising its potential. Just look at

The GEL Golf putter range has been designed to create a balanced and weighted head that will encourage the ball to roll faster and straighter. “For me personally, it is extremely exciting to be designing my own range of putters under the GEL umbrella as the GEL putters are not only technologically innovative but also they look modern, colourful and striking.”

GEL Groove Putters The innovation of the groove putter has been a golfing revelation in the 21st century and now groove technology is set to become a game improvement revolution. Exhaustive laboratory testing has proved that the grooved putter face produces greater grip with the golf ball at the moment of impact, therefore enhancing a putter’s ability to produce the desired topspin roll on the ball. GEL has further improved this technology by introducing horizontal, precision-cut grooves that generate an even better topspin roll. The faster the ball starts rolling (minimising the skidding effect) the better your distance control and the better the putt will hold its line. Tour professional’s feedback has resulted in further improvements. GEL putters have larger, heavier and beautifully balanced heads which encourage a smoother more rhythmical putting stroke, helping to create that sought-after pendulum motion. GEL putters are all built from 431 stainless steel with a Black Nickel finish. They also have an aluminium putter face insert, which makes them softer and more responsive than other putters. The 2008 range features six men’s right hand models, two ladies right hand and two men’s left hand. And you won’t miss their distinctive Men’s blue/yellow or Lady’s blue/pink grips. Coming in November are the Paul Hurrion (putting coach of Padraig Harrington, refer to article on page 22) Signature Range of GEL putters. These take the revolution to the next level!

Bionic is the only golf glove designed by a leading orthopedic hand surgeon.
ONLY BIONIC HAS AN ANATOMICAL PAD SYSTEM. Your fingers and palm have “peaks and valleys.” Bionic’s patented, anatomical pads (shown in orange) even out the surface of your hand, giving you a lighter grip and optimum contact between hand and club.
LIGHTEN YOUR GRIP FOR LONGER, MORE ACCURATE SHOTS With a conventional golf glove, you compensate for the unevenness of your hand by squeezing the club too hard. That tightens the muscles in your hand and arm. With the Bionic glove design, you instinctively adopt a lighter grip. Your new lighter, more relaxed Bionic grip will increase swing speed and add distance. Because your hand has more surface contact with the club, you have more control. This keeps the clubface from twisting, improving accuracy. Gloves are crafted from top-grade cabretta leather—they feel like a second skin. Available in men’s and women’s sizes and styles (left and right handed). Bionic Gloves are available at all Drummond Golf Stores. www.drummondgolf.com

Callaway F TiQ Driver
Callaway X22 Irons
To create the highest level of performance, it takes the brightest minds exploiting cutting edge materials, shapes and technologies. The FT-iQ driver advances the revolutionary ideas that went into the FT-i driver for the longest and straightest driver Callaway Golf has ever made.
Callaway Golf has always had the same goal in mind when it comes to X Series irons – set the performance standard for the industry. The new X-22 irons don’t disappoint and are the best X Series iron ever.
The redefined head shape produces a sleek and stealthy look while raising the MOI for unprecedented accuracy off the tee. Hyperbolic face technology significantly raises ball speeds across the entire face for increased distance. The exclusive Fubuki shaft from Mitsubishi Rayon adds to the incredible feel and performance.
By redesigning the notch weighting and moving weight where it creates the most benefit, these irons boast an MOI that’s 10% higher than their predecessors, while the CG position has been preserved to generate optimal trajectory and distance control. The modified tru-bore design has been incorporated, dampening vibration for enhanced feel and the tour proven head shape has a slightly thinner topline and sole with a large sweet spot for improved aesthetics and forgiveness that will boost any golfer’s confidence.
Ping Rapture V2 Series Ping engineers designed the new Rapture V2 Series to bring added performance and enjoyment to golfers of all abilities. In the V2 driver, Ping combined titanium with external tungsten weight pads to create a lower spinning, high launching driver with the high MOI and distance expected from a Ping driver. Confidence and reliability are among the benefits engineered into the Rapture V2 fairway woods. The larger stainless steel heads are designed with a dense, tungsten sole plate and shallower face to optimise the CG location for higher trajectories and longer flying, more accurate shots. The hybrids are ideal for golfers looking for maximum forgiveness throughout their set or the better player simply in search of a long iron replacement. Its sloped crown design and dense tungsten sole plate deliver the high launching, green holding results expected from a hybrid. For a maximum forgiveness iron, the multi-material V2 irons deliver. Its tungsten sole weight, titanium face and stainless steel body produce longer, higher launching shots. At impact, the sensation of solid contact is equalled only by a feeling of satisfaction after your ball finds the green. 32 |

Callaway X Forged Legendary clubmaker Roger Cleveland has raised the bar once again with the new Callaway X-Forged wedges. Designed with input straight from Tour players, these wedges provide better players with all the elements they demand from their scoring clubs. Constructed from soft 1020 carbon steel for incredible feel, the clubs also feature a tighter heel-toe radius that provides increased versatility from anywhere around the green. On selected 56 through 64 degree models, the aggressivelysized Mack Daddy Grooves are designed at the maximum depth and width for tour-level spin, trajectory and distance control.
Carbite P BX One of America’s favourite wedges are now available in Australia. Carbite has 20 years of experience in applying the science of metallurgy to the art of designing high performance wedges. The all new PBX wedge is the result of these 20 years of research and development! The PBX wedge features maximum performance technology and a classic shape for enhanced cosmetic appeal. Extensive field testing by low and high handicappers along with professionals has proven that this technology translates to performance and will dramatically improve playability in all conditions. Engineers have placed the maximum amount of weight heel/ toe to enhance forgiveness on off centre hits. This creates a perfectly balanced head feel at impact resulting in consistent, solid shots. Increased moment of inertia means that performance on off centre hits will not decrease dramatically and vibration will be minimal at impact.

Ping iWedge The versatility and performance of the original Ping Eye2 sand wedge inspired the design of the iWedge. Borrowing the proven engineering advancements of the tour favourite - including the concave sole - the iWedge’s Sand Cup design positions the pivot point further from the lead edge and features an aggressively tapered heel and toe. This combination gets the wedge under the ball quickly in the sand or from turf and prevents digging. The deep, multi-level cavity maximises forgiveness and positions the centre of gravity toward the centre of the face and low for a solid feel.
TaylorMade Z T P Aggressive Z Grooves for Super Stopping Power The Z TP wedge looks great, feels great and performs great. Its beautiful smoked PVD finish offers the finest in look and aesthetic appeal, whilst reducing glare and promoting improved focus. The Z TP wedge has 100% Milled Z Cutter grooves that are sharp-edged and wide delivering higher spin to promote increased stopping power. Its classic shape and tour-proven hosel grind looks and performs great with the face open for easy flop shots.
Wilson Staff Tw9 Performance Tour-milled grooves for shot-stopping spin from precise distances are cut into each new Wilson Staff Tw9 wedge. New, lower-lofted cavity back options bridge the gap between the modern pitching wedge and the sand wedge, for improved distance gapping. As used by 2008 Open and PGA Champion Padraig Harrington.

GREAT GOLF GETAWAYS
NSW CENTRAL COAST, PORT STEPHENS & SURROUNDS By Lee Midson
Located just 1 hour’s drive north from Sydney is the start of the NSW Central Coast, one of the most spectacular coastlines in Australia and home to two of the best resort courses in New South Wales including Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club and Kooindah Waters. This region is the perfect escape for a weekend of golf and leisure and the opportunity to explore this magnificent coastal region that starts from Broken Bay at the mouth of Sydney’s Hawkesbury River and stretches north towards Newcastle. Here you will find not only some of Australia’s best golf courses but also picturesque bays and inlets, pristine beaches and lush hinterland. If you’re planning a longer golf trip and are keen to experience several golf courses, then be sure to include Port Stephens and surrounds in your itinerary. This region is located within 1 hour drive north of Newcastle on the mid-north coast or approximately 2½ hour drive north from Sydney. Here you can enjoy playing two 18-hole championship courses located in Port Stephens including Le Meilleur Horizons Resort and Pacific Dunes. For interstate visitors, you can travel either via Newcastle Airport near Williamtown (just a short 30 minutes drive from Port Stephens) or start your journey from Sydney winding your way up the coast. Take the time to combine your golfing adventure with wine touring in the Hunter Valley, or explore the magnificent scenery and coastal townships along the NSW Central Coast and surrounding regions – a great golf destination for your next group golf trip with family or friends. 54 | Beyond the Fairways - Spring / Summer 2008
Kooindah Waters Kooindah Boulevard, Wyong NSW
This 18-hole championship golf course was designed by leading golf course architect Ross Watson in consultation with Craig Parry and is located just outside Wyong on the NSW Central Coast (about 1 hour drive north of Sydney). Opened in April 2006 and managed by Troon Golf, Kooindah Waters Golf Club is regarded as one of the premier golf courses in NSW and is currently ranked 37th Best Public Access Golf Course in Australia (voted by The Golf Guide Top 100 for 2008). The course layout is dominated by spectacular existing wetlands, with the course designed to interact with the natural water features and flora in this region. Divided into three distinct character precincts, the course has been designed as a “thinking golfer’s course” where accuracy, ball placement and imagination are the keys to scoring well. A distinctive feature at Kooindah Waters is the unique “sleeper retaining walls and bunkers” and an island green Par 3 on the 17th hole. In July this year, we had the opportunity to schedule our first social event at Kooindah Waters for our NSW Drummond Club members and a great day was enjoyed by all participants. NB: See page 60 in our event news for further information and event results. Drummond Club Member – Green Fee Offer 2 players enjoy a round of 18 holes inc shared cart hire for just $110 – save $38! A sunny Queensland day with a mild 22 degrees provided the perfect stage for a great competition, and this challenging course certainly tested the skills of all and deemed to be “tough” on the day. Pre-event, participants had the opportunity to warm-up and test drive the latest range of TaylorMade drivers and Cougar presented their range of putters on the putting green. TWIN CREEKS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Riverside Golf & Country Club is located in the sand belt region of West Lakes, and within just 30 minutes drive of Adelaide’s CBD. The course offers a tight and challenging par 70 layout over 5,508 metres and was in great condition for our 2008 SA State Final. Windy and wet conditions ensured this would be a challenging experience for all players with a final field of 50 players competing on the day.
Designed by Graham Marsh, Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club is regarded as one of Sydney’s top private courses and is located just 1-hour drive west of Sydney. This par 72 golf course (6,444 metres) managed by Troon Golf, provides a challenging experience for golfers of all levels, offers world-class facilities and was the ideal venue for our 2008 NSW State Final. On the day, we enjoyed fine weather and still conditions and the final field of 82 players experienced a tough round, with the low scores a testament to the challenging layout at Twin Creeks.
Brett Ogle joined the competition day playing the round with the lucky winner of a recent Flexiway South Australia promotion and was in fine form for the official presentations, sharing the stage and a few jokes with Chris Fox from McLaren Vale III Associates (event and wine sponsor for the 2008 state final series). Pre-event on the putting green, Titleist and Callaway provided a demonstration of their latest range of putters. Out on course, TaylorMade showcased their new “Burner” drivers and Oakley presented their latest range of shoes and eyewear. This was quite a contrast to one of our last social events at Kingston Heath where play had just gotten underway when a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning forced all participants back to the clubhouse. However this time around, the event produced some excellent results. One of our female members, Bronwyn Bishop, achieved what some of us only ever dream about…a “Hole-in-One” on the 5th hole. At that time, Bronwyn had only been playing golf for 18 months, so this was a great achievement. We all celebrated back at the clubhouse and awarded Bronwyn with a celebratory bottle of champagne. Cheers again to you Bronwyn! DIVISION

Our event was originally scheduled in June, but torrential rain in NSW throughout most of June forced us to reschedule the event for late July. Fortunately, we eventually enjoyed fine weather conditions and the course was playable with a final field of 69 participants on the day. Pre-event, Callaway presented their latest range of Odyssey putters and provided a putting competition for players on the putting green. TaylorMade promoted their new “Burner” golf ball and provided a complimentary sample ball for all players. Out on course, Wilson showcased their range of “Spine Drivers” and D17 irons. Players also enjoyed some refreshments on course and complimentary wine tasting on the 1st hole sponsored by Kelman Wines from the NSW Hunter Valley region. DIVISION

what’scomingup > 2008 Drummond Golf National Final We are delighted to be returning once again to the prestigious Heritage Golf & Country Club and the Sebel Heritage in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley as our host venue for the 2008 National Final to be held on Thursday 30th October. The Heritage Golf & Country Club has two private 18-hole championship courses of world standard and this year we are playing the magnificent St John Course, the only private Jack Nicklaus Signature course in Australia. With an Australian course rating of 74, this championship par 72 course challenges at every turn. Taking advantage of the Yarra Valley’s natural contours, dazzling water features flow throughout St John while strategically placed slopes, mounds and traps make every hole a quest of it’s own – the perfect stage for our 2008 National Final. The National Final concludes our 2008 event series and Drummond Club members and guests are invited to participate and compete in an event competition on the day including an Individual Stableford division (men and women) and Team Stableford competition. There will also be 6 state finalists leading the field representing the states of VIC, NSW, QLD, WA, SA and ACT and who will be competing for the title of 2008 National Champion. Brett Ogle will join us on the day and will be the official MC for the final presentations and will entertain the crowd with his usual antics and larrikin humour.

Creating Feel of the Ball A great tip that was given to me as a youngster was to grab three balls & drop them on a putting green. Now don’t putt towards a hole, just roll the balls outside your vision some 10 or 12 feet away without looking up. Your aim is to get these as close as possible to each other. This produces great feel.

yourfeedback I attended the short course and course management Ladies Group Clinic held at the beautiful Brookwater Golf Course in June this year. Under the expert tutelage of the charming Nadene Gole it has proven to be the best investment in my game ever – and I travelled all the way from Sydney! As soon as I returned to my local club comp I reduced my handicap by 2, and then on two other occasions in short succession I reduced it by one more each time – a 4 stroke reduction after spending an idyllic couple of days with the best ‘new’ friends anyone could ever wish to meet. My knees no longer wobble when my ball goes ‘plonk’ into a bunker, and the improvement in my putting has left me absolutely spellbound. Thank you and to all concerned – it was a little bit of magic that will last a lifetime, but one that I will endeavour to repeat regularly – it was the best tonic ever and a certain cure for all golf's troubles! Lynne, Sydney
> Golf Days Just a short note to say thanks again for a great day at the Drummond Club Golf Day on August 21 held at the Riverside Golf Club. Our two groups had a great time, making some new golf contacts during the day and even taking home some prizes. Brett Ogle was at his larrikin best and also took the time to meet and chat with every group of players. Big thanks to the sponsors on the day that provided opportunities to sample and test their 1st class products. The Riverside Golf Club’s hospitality was second to none and the BBQ lunch before we teed off really hit the spot! The great quality wines provided by McLaren Vale III Associates at the end of the day warmed us up and contributed well to the late afternoon conviviality. Steve and Janet Halls
> Great Golf Getaways I would just like to thank you for arranging our short break in Tasmania. It all went very smoothly, the accommodation was great and all was organised at both the courses we played at. Just as well you had booked carts for us, it would have been OK to walk Royal Hobart but there is no way I would like to walk Tasmania Golf Course but I must admit it was the most scenic of the two, view from nearly every hole, I would like to thank you again and I will certainly contact you again if we decide to do something similar again.
