PAMPER AND PLAY at Australia’s Best Golf and Spa Retreats
When planning your next golf getaway, be sure to include some time to enjoy the health benefits of a massage and/or spa treatment after your round of golf. Here we cover some of Australia’s best golf and spa retreats, with special offers for Drummond Club members to relax, unwind and enjoy the best of both world’s!
VICTORIA
NEW SOUTH WALES
PENINSULA HOT SPRINGS
Mii Spa at QUAY WEST RESORT MAGENTA SHORES
Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Located just 1 hour from Melbourne’s CBD and only a few minutes drive from the Mornington Peninsula’s best golf courses, Peninsula Hot Springs is the ideal retreat where you can relax and rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit. Styled on traditional Japanese spas in a tranquil garden setting, you can enjoy bathing in the hot thermal spring pools (outdoor and indoor) and choose from an extensive range of massage and spa treatments at the Spa Dreaming Centre – the only natural thermal hot springs and spa centre in Australia! Treat yourself to a body massage (deep tissue, remedial or relaxation) and then soak up the therapeutic benefits of the thermal mineral springs, said to be beneficial in relieving stiffness of the shoulders and recovery from fatigue and sore muscles – ideal after a golf round. So recently after playing an early morning round on the Legends Course at Moonah Links and in need of some pampering, we visited Peninsula Hot Springs to try their “Appetite Package”. This package included lunch with fresh juice on arrival, followed by a bathe, then 1 hour massage of your choice and back in the thermal pools for some more bathing, rest and relaxation (approximately a 3-4 hour duration). I chose the remedial massage and after the complete session felt totally revitalised. A great treat for him and her and highly recommended on your next golf trip to the Mornington Peninsula. Drummond Club Member Offer Save 20% off massage and bathe packages. Advance bookings required Tel: (03) 5950 8777.

appy New Year and welcome to the eighteenth edition of Beyond the Fairways. While 2009 looks like being a challenging year in business and work it should still provide Australian golfers with continued golfing opportunities.
The ratio of golfers to golf courses is the lowest in recent history and probably the lowest ever, which means we will have access to better courses at more competitive prices than ever before. I am sure that our energetic and imaginative Drummond Club Directors Sam and Lee, together with the hardworking Anthony, will be able to guide our members to the best possible deals. With the devaluation of the Australian dollar our Product Director’s visit to the PGA Show in Orlando USA will take on additional significance with his search for the best deals to provide our customers with the best possible value for money in 2009. This year we will look to establish direct import links with manufacturers in China and the USA in an attempt to deliver better prices. A few weeks ago I had a very special week in which I was able to play three rounds of golf with my fifteen year old son who, at one hundred and ninety-five centimeters, is more interested in basketball than golf. As I’ve watched him progressively

improve over each round and not be intimidated by the company of single-figure golfers, I reflected on the unique quality of our wonderful game. There are not too many sports where players with varying skill levels can play alongside each other, helping to raise the standard of the lesser players. Golf is a great sport to introduce to our young boys and girls. We should not just focus on the next Greg Norman or Tiger Woods but rather look at all the positive lessons that can be learnt from playing golf at a young age. Controlling emotions, handling pressure, challenging limitations and socially interacting with playing partners are just a few of the great lessons. They have wider applications than just in sport and can be beneficial in other areas of life also. It is no coincidence that many great sports people have played golf as a companion sport as well as in retirement. Ricky Ponting, Dean Jones, Jeff White, Nathan Buckley and Pat Rafter are all accomplished golfers.
Kind Regards,
Mark Abeyaratne

The Women’s Australian Open The Metropolitan Golf Club, February 12 - 15, 2009 By Sam Gole
Few championships boast the pedigree of the Women’s Australian Open. After the inaugural championship at Victoria Golf Club in 1974, where Japan’s Chako Higuchi was victorious, the Patricia Bridges Trophy has been in the hands of many of the finest female golfers in the world. The iconic Jan Stephenson emerged for her first title in 1977 at Manly Golf Club, the first time an Australian had won the trophy. And who could forget 1994 when a Swede by the name of Annika Sorenstam took to Royal Adelaide Golf Club like a duck to water and won her first and only Women’s Australian Open title. It was also her first win as a professional. Jane Crafter was the first Australian since Jan Stephenson to finish on top and won the title 20 years later in 1997 at Yarra Yarra Golf Club. The undisputed queen of Australian golf, Karrie Webb, began her love affair with the championship in 2000 and repeated that victory in 2002, 2007 and last year at Kingston Heath to make it an unprecedented four crowns. The stunning Metropolitan Golf Club, home to seven previous Men’s Australian Opens and the 2001 Accenture World Match Play Championship, will host the 2009 Women’s Australian Open. The club, located in Melbourne’s world-famous sandbelt, is widely recognised as having one of the finest championship courses in the country, which is ranked among Australia’s top 10. www.drummondclub.com

Ladies Day on Friday 13 February
Not only will the Women’s Australian Open showcase the dynamic calibre of golf in Australia, it will reflect the glamour and elegance of the championship. The event is the pinnacle of women’s golf in Australia at a superb course, well practised in hosting international golfing championships. From 12 - 15 February golf enthusiasts will enjoy the starstudded line-up, along with a wide array of experiences such as Ladies Day on Friday 13 February and a range of exciting activities in the Village throughout the tournament. And it could be the year that a new page is written in the history of the championship. Will Katherine Hull, fresh from her Canadian Open win and breakthrough year on the LPGA Tour, be the next name etched into the trophy? Or will Karrie hold firm for a stunning five victories in her national championship? The challenge awaits.

Bionic is the only golf glove designed by a leading orthopedic hand surgeon.
ONLY BIONIC HAS AN ANATOMICAL PAD SYSTEM. Your fingers and palm have “peaks and valleys.” Bionic’s patented, anatomical pads (shown in orange) even out the surface of your hand, giving you a lighter grip and optimum contact between hand and club.
LIGHTEN YOUR GRIP FOR LONGER, MORE ACCURATE SHOTS With a conventional golf glove, you compensate for the unevenness of your hand by squeezing the club too hard. That tightens the muscles in your hand and arm. With the Bionic glove design, you instinctively adopt a lighter grip. Your new lighter, more relaxed Bionic grip will increase swing speed and add distance. Because your hand has more surface contact with the club, you have more control. This keeps the clubface from twisting, improving accuracy. Gloves are crafted from top-grade cabretta leather—they feel like a second skin. Available in men’s and women’s sizes and styles (left and right handed). Bionic Gloves are available at all Drummond Golf Stores. www.drummondgolf.com

We all want to improve our game, reduce our handicap and ultimately gain greater enjoyment while spending four or more hours on the golf course each time we play. Moving with the times Golf in Australia is in the midst of a revolution. The game is still the country’s highest participation sport. But the way people are participating has changed from, say, ten years ago. One of the most significant movements is happening at private member golf clubs. The waiting list is fast becoming an endangered species – even at the so-called sandbelt courses. Golfers can now choose to commit to golf on their terms. For some clubs, this has been a significant challenge, while for others it has presented an opportunity to meet the market’s demands and flourish. Patterson River Country Club in Bonbeach moved quickly to ensure it’s not left behind in catering for the next generation of consumersavvy golfers. Not only has the club embraced change, but they’ve been a front runner in golf marketing. Patterson River Country Club has launched a number of attractive options that are designed to cater for people who enjoy their golf but don’t want to be tied down to paying an

Pacific Coast Design’s blueprint has changed the face of what was a flat parcel of land by adding water hazards meandering through a 15-acre lake system, fairway mounding and enlarging the greens. The result is a resort-style course that you’d normally expect to play in Queensland. Course of Champions PATTERSON River has hosted many of golf’s biggest names over the years. Five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson (pictured) and the late Norman Von Nida were both regulars while Welshman Ian Woosnam qualified for the Australian Open at Patterson River in the early part of his career. During its early years, the club was widely regarded as one of Victoria’s premier courses. And while Patterson River is not considered a sandbelt course, the 18-hole layout is located on the same sand-based foundations shared by Victoria Golf Club and Royal Melbourne. Because of its location, the course enjoys near perfect playing conditions 12 months of the year. Even in the winter months, the

The fifth is another fun hole to play. It is resort style in appearance and you could be forgiven for feeling as though you're playing golf on the Gold Coast. This is a risk reward hole. The longer hitters have the option to burst a long drive through the narrowing fairway guarded by water on both sides. If successful, an approach shot with a 9 iron to wedge awaits. For the more conservative, play a hybrid or 3 wood off the tee for position and then approach the hole with a mid iron. 16 | Beyond the Fairways - Summer / Autumn 2009
worked to reaffirm its position as a quality golfing venue. The most notable development at Patterson River was in 2000, when the board decided to sell off a parcel of land for a housing development which flanks the 18th hole. Money obtained from the sale has enabled significant capital works to be completed – both on the course and the clubhouse. Those improvements have set the foundation for a bright future for the club’s members and those golfers who are yet to experience a quality golfing experience in friendly surrounds. The Barossa & Clare Valley
Golf, World-Class Wine & Food By Sam Gole
Time and time again you've probably heard the Barossa described as the wine capital of Australia, a place where you can get a real taste for the finer things in life, a centre of culinary excellence, the gourmet's paradise. Of course, there's more to the Barossa Valley than just wine and food. Golf! Yes, that's right. You may not need another reason to visit the grand dame of Australian wine regions unless you are a golfer who likes to play outstanding golf courses in beautiful locations. Then we have another 72 great reasons for you.
On a recent visit to the region I discovered four marvellous golf courses. Gawler Golf Club, Tanunda Pines Golf Club and The Barossa Valley Golf Club are situated within 15 minutes of the heart of the Barossa and only 1 hour from Adelaide. The Clare Golf Club is approximately 1 hour north of the Barossa Valley in the neighbouring Clare Valley. These golf courses may not share the notoriety and status of wellknown golf courses in other popular destinations but they do guarantee a thoroughly enjoyable playing experience to all golfers.

irons Ping Rapture V2 Engineered to bring golfers maximum forgiveness, the Rapture V2 iron relies on multi-metal technology to launch the ball longer, higher and with more accuracy. A dense tungsten sole weight positions the centre of gravity low and away from the face to optimise the launch conditions, an innovation made possible by the lightweight titanium face that frees weight for where it’s needed most low and on the perimeter. The high launch angle allows for stronger lofts so golfers can generate greater distance without sacrificing control. The Custom Tuning Port stabilises the titanium face to help ensure a solid feel and consistency.
Callaway Diablo A bold new forged iron from Callaway Golf that offers precision forged quality, bold styling and great feel for confident, aggressive play. Big Bertha Diablo is designed for players seeking a traditionally styled forged club that is easy to use – delivering great accuracy and distance. These irons feature a soft 1020 carbon steel body, a high-strength Carpenter Steel face and a rubber SenSert cavity pad. This combination provides outstanding distance with increased accuracy and control over typical forged irons with unparalleled levels of feel.
Titleist AP1 Titleist AP1 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, contemporary cast irons providing look, feel, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness for the skilled and aspiring player. AP1’s high tech multi-material construction features a steel body, tungsten nickel sole, elastomer bar and aluminium cavity plate. These materials combine to deliver both performance and feel.
Available March
The lower cavity of the Titleist AP1 iron is enclosed by a tungsten nickel box. This high density material locates the Centre of Gravity low and deep for performance while also providing low frequency vibration dampening for outstanding solid feel.
TaylorMade Burner Plus Burner Power plus Maximum TaylorMade Forgiveness The new Burner Plus irons were developed for the 10+ handicap bomber, who loves their Burner driver and wants an iron that shares the same personality and fast-and-long qualities. With the large clubface and thick topline, the Burner Plus irons look strong and are easy to launch, which creates that "can’t miss" confidence golfers of all levels desire. An increased degree of offset makes it easier to square the clubface to the ball at address, discouraging a fade and promoting a distance-enhancing draw. This is an incredibly easy-to-hit iron that’s built to deliver more forgiveness, speed and distance with every swing. 36 | Beyond the Fairways - Summer / Autumn 2009

Wilson Staff Di9 More Distance. More Accuracy. More Feel. The new Wilson Staff Di9 irons are the highest MOI irons Wilson has ever developed. They feature wide soles and lower blade heights for a higher launch along with a thin face, which produces higher ball speed and more distance. The wide tip shafts reduce twisting at impact on off centre hits and an increased sweet spot through toe-friendly weighting. A 3.5° lofting strategy has been created for more accurate distance gapping. With a urethane shock trap insert to minimise vibration and softer tip control shafts for more responsive feel, the Wilson Staff Di9 irons are a step above the award-winning Di7 irons.
King Cobra Pro CB Craftsmanship. Feel. And the Ability to Place the Ball Exactly Where You Want It.
PowerBilt Citation Ti Face The Citation Ti Face premium irons are loaded with technological advances to give golfers longer, stronger and more accurate shots that make the game more enjoyable.
Designed with input from Cobra’s Tour staff, the Pro CB irons deliver superior feel and workability. With a forged cavity back, shorter hosel and lower centre of gravity, these irons have been engineered for a high ball flight, while the rounded sole camber improves turf interaction. It’s Tour-calibre technology with one thing in mind – putting the ball exactly where you want it.
Citation’s 431 Stainless Steel head construction with aerospace NiMaraging (nickel-steel alloy) faces feature multi-thickness construction, providing maximum MOI and COR ratings. Explosive power! High strength nickel allows the clubface to be made thinner, creating greater ball velocity, giving golfers increased distance from their irons. Golfers will gain more control from the Citation’s Twin Tungsten backweights. The centre of gravity has been lowered, moving it away from the clubface, creating a huge effective impact area. The Ultra-Deep cavity makes the entire face of each iron very forgiving.
Cougar T4 Cougar’s T4 super size irons feature a deep undercut cavity channel combined with a progressive variable weighting system, which allows extra weight to be repositioned in the heel and toe, producing a strong draw bias and a low centre of gravity. This provides golfers with greater distance, increased playability and a higher degree of accuracy. The 10% longer club face design also produces a larger sweet spot providing greater forgiveness and more consistent ball flight. T4 irons are cast from high grade 17.4 stainless steel, are finished in high polish and can be fitted with an ultra light 65 gram graphite shaft or super light 90 gram steel shaft in regular, stiff or senior flex.

Callaway F T An evolution of the original Fusion Irons, the FT Irons are a product of Callaway Golf’s innovative weightshifting science Fusion Technology. Delivering the utmost in performance and playability, these irons feature a new head shape designed to appeal to mid to low handicap players. Multi-material construction allows for premium performance. The Tunite cradle has been optimised with the addition of Extreme Notch Weighting. An astounding 80 percent of the clubhead’s weight is in the extreme perimeter for a higher MOI and enhanced stability and forgiveness. The lightweight hot titanium face produces fast ball speeds and the TPU SenSert decreases vibration, creating an incredibly solid feel.
TaylorMade Tour Burner Burner Distance with Tour Playability. The Tour Burner irons are designed to appeal to a wide range of golfers due to their multi-functional sole. They are engineered to produce extreme power with unprecedented control for every level of player. Featuring an ultra-thin, 2.2mm clubface that delivers high COR for increased distance, the Tour Burner irons also incorporate TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone Technology which provides consistent distance on off-centre hits. The large clubhead features visible heel and toe weighting that boosts MOI and a bevelled trailing edge that combines to deliver tremendous playability and tour-calibre distance.
PowerBilt Citation FZ1 Forged Twelve time PGA Tour Champion Fuzzy Zoeller worked closely with PowerBilt’s research and development team to create the pure carbon steel cavity back forged irons. The result – premium PowerBilt Citation FZ1 irons that feature the latest in forged iron technology. For a traditional design that appeals to low handicappers, FZ1 cavity back forged irons have a relatively high Moment of Inertia (MOI) for a classic shaped iron, so players of all ability will benefit. The irons are made from 1021 carbon steel with nickel and chrome plating and a combination of satin and bead blasted finish and are CNC milled for precise head weight and shape, providing perfect weight distribution. The tour-ground traditional shape FZ1 irons also have a bead blasted top line to eliminate distracting glare at address. An attractive multi-finish, four colour high quality emblem is featured on the back.

Ping G10 The 17-4 stainless steel G10 irons are engineered with extremely low toe weighting to increase the MOI for added forgiveness and consistency. The large, perimeterweighted head features a new cavity shape and wider sole. The centre of gravity is positioned away from the face and low in the club head to promote higher launching, lower spinning shots. By creating a new shape for the Custom Tuning Port (CTP), Ping engineers stabilised the hitting area to produce consistent ball velocity across the entire club face. An elastomer CTP insert helps control vibration for a solid feel. www.drummondclub.com

Titleist AP2 Titleist AP2 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, technical forged irons with traditional solid feel, looks and shot control for the skilled player. AP2’s high tech multi-material construction features a steel body, tungsten nickel sole, elastomer bar and aluminium cavity plate. AP2 is built to deliver both performance and feel. The lower cavity of the Titleist AP2 iron is enclosed by a tungsten nickel box. This high density material locates the weight low and deep while providing structural rigidity and low frequency vibration dampening for outstanding solid feel. The tungsten nickel box helps reduce the sole and back flange width for better turf performance and shot control.
TaylorMade Tour Preferred A classic blade shape that incorporates a thin topline and shorter blade-length from heel to toe for a clean, compact look at address, which delivers the soft feel of a forged iron. The Tour-configured sole features a softened leading and trailing edge that work together to minimise resistance and discourage digging. The shallow, undercut cavity redistributes weight to the heel and toe pads for increased stability and more solid feel at impact. The cavity also houses a vibration-management sound badge, strategically shaped and positioned over the Inverted Cone to fine-tune the club’s pitch and resonance, ensuring that the sound of impact is solid and satisfying.
King Cobra Pro MB Not only played by our tour pros. Inspired by our tour pros. Created in collaboration with Cobra’s Tour pros, the Pro MB irons give accomplished players the soft feel of forged 1020 carbon steel along with the refinement that comes with superior engineering. The longer hosel is ideal for players who prefer a high degree of ball control, while the thin topline and rounded sole camber further aid control and feedback. The end result: solid striking muscle-back irons with the kind of high level of playability that Cobra Tour pros are raving about.
Callaway X-22 Tour To improve on the highly successful X-20 Tour irons, Callaway Golf engineers added new features that allow the X-22 Tour irons to play even better and feel even softer. The most obvious visual difference is the addition of Precision Notch Weighting, which raises the MOI for better stability. A new sleeker hosel was also incorporated. The combination of these two features allowed the CG to be moved lower and more in line with the centre of the face, generating unique playing characteristics that enhanced trajectory and distance control with a much higher level of feel. The head shape has been refined with the thinnest possible topline while still using a 360-degree undercut channel and the optimised sole width progression provides better turf interaction.

When matched to your swing speed with the proper shaft flex, you’ll see how custom fitting and technology can raise your enjoyment while lowering your scores.
Callaway X22 Callaway Golf has always had the same goal in mind when it comes to the X Series irons to set the performance standard for the industry. The current X-22 irons don’t disappoint and are the best X Series irons ever. By redesigning the notch weighting and moving weight where it creates the most benefit, these irons boast an MOI that’s 10% higher than their predecessors, while the CG position has been preserved to generate optimal trajectory and distance control. The modified tru-bore design has been incorporated which dampens dampening vibration for enhanced feel. The tour proven head shape has a slightly thinner topline and sole with a large sweet spot for improved aesthetics and forgiveness that will boost any golfer’s confidence.
King Cobra S9 The only way to build a better game is with multi-material construction. Cobra engineers made the awardwinning* S9 irons even better. The expanded threepiece polymer topline and urethane sole insert optimise discretionary weighting for a lower CG and higher MOI, offering higher launch, greater distance and more accuracy. Combine that with the club’s low profile and wide sole with a chamfer relief design and you gain improved versatility and more forgiveness. *The King Cobra S9 Iron, winner of the 2007 Golf Digest Hot List Editors’ Choice Award for Super Game-Improvement Iron, is now new and improved for 2008.

Callaway Diablo The new Big Bertha Diablo Hybrids provide the power and attitude that give golfers the confidence to pull off any shot from anywhere on the course. Callaway Golf designers have incorporated the Dual Runner Sole that was originally introduced in the FT Hybrids. It helps golfers make solid contact from a variety of turf conditions and lowers the leading edge to make the sweet spot more accessible. The head design features a high MOI for more stability and forgiveness, so golfers get more distance and increased accuracy whether they’re crushing it off the tee or firing at the flag.
Wilson Staff Fybrid fairway utilities are a single family of long distance fairway utility clubs delivering consistent distance gaps between each club. The FYbrid system makes redundant more than 12 traditional clubs by offering six individually engineered clubs that cover the long distance needs between the driver and the 6-iron. The key to the Wilson Staff FYbrid Utility System is the FY club: a bridge club that lies between fairway woods and hybrids. Because of its unique specifications, the FY club actually replaces three clubs the 2 iron, 2 hybrid and 7 wood and offers the greatest shot flexibility of any club on the market.
TaylorMade Burner This modern hybrid has been engineered to make it easy to launch the ball on a towering, long-carrying flight at average swing speeds. The Burner Rescue High Launch features a fast-looking triangular Burner head shape that permits an ultra-deep CG location and a slight draw bias to help prevent a slice while encouraging a distanceenhancing draw, and it incorporates TaylorMade’s SuperFast technology to promote faster swing speed for increased distance. Ping Rapture V2 To ensure forgiving and higher launching results, Ping engineers relied on the density of a tungsten sole plate in the design of the Rapture V2 Hybrid Series. The sloped crown design and the 112 gram tungsten sole represents 48% of the club head’s mass, allowing the centre of gravity to be positioned lower and further back from the face. A larger head profile and longer face increase the moment of inertia for improved accuracy and confidence. The variable thickness of the face increases ball speed and is machined and plasma-welded to the stainless steel head. Each of the four loft options were chosen to blend efficiently into the Rapture V2 iron set to maintain proper distance gaps when replacing long or mid irons.
Cougar T4 Cougar’s T4 hybrid features a Tri Geometry Triangular head shape and IWT (Interchangeable Weight Technology). With 8 grams of moveable weights placed low and back in the club head you can have either a draw or a neutral ball flight in the one club. The new triangular shape also produces a lower centre of gravity and a higher MOI resulting in superior launch angles and greater distance from all parts of the course. Available in a 3/19° and 4/22° degree the T4 hybrid is fitted with either a lightweight 90 gram steel or 65 gram graphite shaft and is available in regular, stiff or senior flex.
Titleist 909H The Titleist 909H is a progressive line of hybrids that deliver optimum launch and spin through the lofts. The 909H features a tour proven, modern profile that creates a deeper CG for greater stability. The 909H's large head and long face provides confidence and forgiveness. Each 909H is constructed with a precision cast 17-4 stainless steel body and 455 Carpenter Steel face insert for a lively feel and increased ball speed. The size, shape, offset and CG location progress through the lofts to provide the proper ball flight, workability and trajectory control. The factory installed SureFit Swingweight Screw helps to position the CG deep while also providing a precise head to shaft match.

Tungsten is strategically placed in the heel and toe to move weight back and low, making long shots easier to hit and providing the ultimate in control and distance. The four-way, multi-finish, two-level radius sole is designed to minimise turf drag as the club is drawn away from the ball. The FZ1 hybrids' two-level sole also works to remove any impediment to a clean ball strike.
Callaway Heavenwood The women’s Big Bertha Heavenwood hybrids are the perfect alternative for golfers at every level who struggle to consistently hit their long irons. fairwaywoods Titleist 909F2 With a round profile and larger, extended face, the Titleist 909F2 is a high performance fairway wood that delivers higher launch with mid spin. The 909F2 features a tour proven, modern profile that creates a deeper CG for greater stability. The larger, longer face of the 909F2 provides confidence and forgiveness, while half degree higher lofts compared to 909F3 promote higher launch and trajectory. Each 909F2 is constructed with a precision cast 17-4 Stainless Steel body and 275 Carpenter Steel face insert for a lively feel and increased ball speed. The multi relief sole minimises turf resistance and ensures that the ground contact point remains forward to reduce bounce and skip at impact. The factory installed SureFit Swingweight Screw helps to position the CG deep while also providing a precise head to shaft match.
Ping Rapture V2 With the Rapture V2 Fairway Wood, the density and shape of the tungsten sole plate positions the centre of gravity (CG) for higher launching, longer flying shots. The concentration of the 61-gram tungsten sole plate, which represents 34% of the clubhead’s mass, allowed Ping engineers to move the centre of gravity location lower and further from the face for increased launch and lower spin. The shallow face and wider sole of the large, stainless steel head ensure stability and forgiveness while producing a high trajectory. Its three-part construction combines the tungsten sole and stainless steel body with a plasma-welded, machined steel face to increase ball speed for greater distance.
Callaway Diablo The new Big Bertha Diablo fairway woods are just plain mean. They have attitude and they’ll let more golfers feel like they can bring every course to its knees. Edge Technology takes advantage of weight placement within an all-stainless steel clubhead. By strategically shaping the head, the Callaway Golf engineers can achieve optimal performance characteristics that produce draw and neutral options that golfers can choose to match with their swing type and shot shape. This provides longer, more accurate shots off the tee or from the fairway. VFT Technology was also incorporated to boost ball speeds and raise forgiveness levels for higher confidence every time they come out of the bag.

TaylorMade Burner The Burner High Launch boasts the largest size and footprint of any TaylorMade steel fairway wood and its MOI measures 6% higher than TaylorMade’s previous Burner fairway woods. The Burner High Launch features a fast-looking triangular Burner head shape that looks large when positioned behind the ball to inspire confidence. Dual Crown technology, wherein the size of the crown is noticeably smaller than the large sole, combined with the UltraThin Wall technology enables an exceptionally deep CG location that’s 35% lower than previous comparable Burner fairway woods. This makes launching the ball easier while also contributing to greater stability and forgiveness.
Cougar T4 Cougar’s T4 fairway woods have a Tri Geometry Triangular shaped clubhead, designed with a mid profile body shape and 8 grams of moveable weight positioned in the heel and lower back clubhead, allowing golfers to choose between a draw or neutral ball flight. The triangular shape also provides an extremely low centre of gravity producing higher launch angles and greater overall distance and playability. T4 fairway woods are forged stainless steel which also provides superior feel and control from the fairway and are available in 90 gram super light steel or 65 gram lightweight graphite shafts in either regular, senior or stiff flex.
Titleist 909F3 With a pear profile and deep face, the Titleist 909F3 is a high performance fairway wood that delivers mid launch with low spin. The 909F3 features a tour proven, modern profile that creates a deeper CG for greater stability. The smaller, deeper face of 909F3 provides confidence for players who want shot control, while half degree stronger lofts compared to 909F2 promote a flatter ball flight and trajectory control. Each 909F3 is constructed with a precision cast 17-4 Stainless Steel body and 275 Carpenter Steel face insert for a lively feel and increased ball speed. SL350c For golfers in search of peace of mind in performance, MGI created the SL350c. The sophisticated digital electronics and touch sensitive function button have led the way to a function friendly top control design, unique only to the SL350c. For complete peace of mind in performance, the battery indication light and fail safe battery connect ensure the buggy will only move on your command even if the power control is on.
SL550c Experience golf as it should be with the SL550c it’s breaking all the rules in its class. Experience first hand the weightlessness of a motorised golf buggy walking with you at your own speed even down the steepest of gradients. Through the feature of cruise control, the SL550c will maintain your desired speed down hill and on flats, eliminating the need for speed adjustment or personal involvement. A differential gearbox provides the luxury of easy turning even in the tightest circles at any speed along with the world’s only reverse function on a single motored buggy for those tough conditions. Alongside these great attributes is the controlled distance function for more independence at 10m, 20m and 30m measured distances before the automatic stop function is activated.
Navigator NVR750c The flagship model – the Navigator NVR750c. With features to astonish even those accustomed to having the best, the unparalleled speed in the microprocessor enables the fastest reaction time in the full direction remote control. This future technology, patented by MGI, features a ‘heart beat’ between remote and buggy ensuring constant contact up to an effective range of 200m, then safety stopping outside contact range. The real amazement of the NVR750c lies in the patented Gyroscopic technology, for onboard navigation, which guides the buggy to stay on track through any terrain. Whether it’s over a divot or traversing a hill, the NVR750c will use the dual motors and navigation system to correct its direction and maintain a straight line. The inbuilt cruise control allows for maximum control and functionality even down the steepest of gradients.

Motocaddy S1 & S3 With over 30,000 buggies sold in Europe in the last 18 months, the latest Motocaddy range has taken the world by storm. Therefore it is no surprise that since April 2008 over 1,500 of the sensational Motocaddy S1 and S3 Digital Electric Buggies have been sold in Australia. Both models are made from aerospace grade aluminium and weigh in at a mere 7.6kg. This combined with its lightweight battery (6kg) and simple single piece locking system makes the Motocaddy compact, easy to handle for men and women of any age. The Motocaddy S1 and S3 are smart too! Their digital electronics come with options such as one touch stop/start, set and variable distance control, battery meter indicator, current speed readout and multiple distance measurements. Quite simply after 12 months we can say confidently that the new Motocaddy Digital Series are super reliable! However, in the unlikely event that you encounter a problem, both models have a unique self diagnostic system. This quickly enables you or the service centre to determine the fault, enabling easy and inexpensive repair. Most importantly this gets you back on the fairways in no time at all. Both models come complete with a seat and come in a choice of two colours, black or titanium, and a great range of accessories are also available to complement your Motocaddy buggy.
Enjoy your walk...

Pamper & Play at Australia’s Best Golf & Spa Retreats Feature by Lee Midson
When planning your next golf getaway, be sure to include some time to enjoy the health benefits of a massage and/or spa treatment after your round of golf. Here we cover some of Australia’s best golf and spa retreats, with special offers for Drummond Club members to relax, unwind and enjoy the best of both worlds!
VICTORIA
PENINSULA HOT SPRINGS Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Located just 1 hour from Melbourne’s CBD and only a few minutes drive from the Mornington Peninsula’s best golf courses, Peninsula Hot Springs is the ideal retreat where you can relax and rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit.

2008 Drummond Golf & Golf Magazine National Event Series NATIONAL FINAL A Warm Welcome at the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley
Thursday 30th October 2008
The Heritage Golf & Country Club, Victoria Course: St John Our 2008 event series concluded with our 2008 National Final held on 30th October at the prestigious Heritage Golf & Country Club located in Victoria’s picturesque Yarra Valley. The Heritage Golf & Country Club is one of Melbourne’s finest golf course facilities, offering two private 18-hole championship courses, both of world standard. The original St John course is the only private Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in Australia and complements the new links style Henley course, which opened in late 2006, designed by Tony Cashmore. Also located on-site is the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley, a luxurious 5 star resort offering superior accommodation, an a la carte restaurant featuring a sumptuous selection of local Yarra Valley produce and wines, a spa centre and an array of other guest leisure facilities including tennis, indoor heated pool, gymnasium and more. The Heritage Golf & Country Club has been our host venue for the national final for the past 3 years and players have enjoyed the experience of competing on both the St John course in 2006 and the Henley course in 2007. For the 2008 final we returned once again to the magnificent St John course, which was in excellent condition and provide the perfect stage for the event. Seven state finalists from around Australia representing VIC, NSW, NT, WA, ACT, QLD and SA competed in the final and we congratulate again each of our state finalists who reached the final championship.

On arrival in Melbourne, our finalists enjoyed a chauffeured limousine ride to the resort, then settled into the luxurious Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley for a 2-night stay. Some of our finalists chose to extend their stay a few extra nights and enjoyed the opportunity to play more rounds at this magnificent golf resort. The Drummond Club management team (Lee, Sam and Anthony) hosted welcome drinks and a pre-event dinner for the 7 state finalists together with accompanying family and friends. Brett Ogle and his wife Rikki joined us together with Reg Symond from McLaren Vale III Associates (event series sponsor) and several Drummond Golf Franchisees visiting from interstate.
On the Day We awoke to a cool morning with threatening rain clouds hovering above. Fortunately the weather improved but breezy conditions prevailed for most of the event, which made playing conditions that much more difficult and ultimately a true test of skill on the day. The National Final included both an Individual and Team Stableford competition with a final field of 95 players, while our 7 state finalists competed for the National Championship. Pre-event, players enjoyed the opportunity to warm up and test drive the latest range of Wilson and Titleist drivers and a putting demonstration by Ping. Out on course, Wilson also provided demonstrations of their latest range of Smooth drivers, fybrids and DI9 irons.
Event Presentations After the round, players headed back to the clubhouse for a buffet lunch and the celebrations kicked off with complimentary winetastings courtesy of McLaren Vale III Associates, which included the latest release of their renowned big reds, Squid Ink Shiraz and Four Play, and a range of white wines including the new Quick Sand and Sabbatical ranges. Brett Ogle joined us as the official MC for the final presentations and entertained us as usual with his trademark jokes and humour in the lead-up to the announcement of the event results. After a very competitive round in difficult conditions, our winner of the 2008 National Final was Neil Stokes, representing Victoria, with a score of 40 points (H/Cap 15). Mick McQueen from WA was second with a score of 37 (H/Cap 17) and Stephen Frost from ACT third with a score of 36 points (H/Cap 21). Following a successful 2008 event series, we extend our sincere appreciation again to our major event sponsors Drummond Golf and Golf Magazine, and supporting sponsors and event partners Flexiway and McLaren Vale III Associates, The Heritage Golf & Country Club and the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley. A special thank you also to all Drummond Club members and guests who participated throughout the 2008 event series – over 2,000 participants Australia-wide. We look forward to bringing you an exciting series for 2009 and the opportunity to play the best public and private golf courses around Australia.

2008 NATIONAL CHAMPION We congratulate Neil Stokes again as our 2008 National Champion after playing a terrific round at the Heritage Golf & Country Club to win the final 2008 championship. We had a chat with Neil after the event to find out a little more about our new Champion and how he enjoyed the experience in competing in the 2008 Drummond Golf & Golf Magazine National Final.
My Playing Background I started playing golf ten years ago when I got too old to play soccer back in the UK. We had four or five guys who started playing together on most Saturdays. It wasn’t pretty to watch us but the competitive side made it very interesting. Most of the early rounds were frustrating to say the least. Most of the guys played soccer at a decent level but were sharply reminded that golf is not like any other sport. I realised very early that to make an improvement and enjoy the game a little more I would have to invest in lessons. Most of the lessons were group sessions with a local professional. They were very relaxed and a chance to hit some balls with the added bonus of someone showing us how to do it properly. Name:

Favourite Golf Courses My favourite course in Australia is The Hyatt Regency in Coolum. It’s a very pretty golf course, which has the tendency to bite you very hard when you lose concentration. Add to that the masses of wildlife and scenery and the course really does have everything. I have also been fortunate to play some fantastic courses in the USA. My favourite there is the Magnolia course at the Disney Resort in Florida. It has some awesome par 5s with water everywhere, Mickey Mouse shaped bunkers and wildlife ranging from alligators to flamingoes. The club staff even clean your clubs for you after the round while you have a beer. It’s an awesome experience.
Shopping at Drummond Golf I shop at Drummond Golf because unlike other golf outlets the staff are not all over you like a rash when you walk through the door. If you want help they will give it. However, they allow you to browse the merchandise at your leisure. Drummond Golf stores have more than enough variety and the staff are usually very well informed about new technology and products.
Impressions of the 2008 Drummond Golf& Golf Magazine National Final The whole Drummond Golf competition was a fantastic experience. It was well-organised, fun to play in and enthusiastic staff and excellent courses supported it. The final day was probably one of the most enjoyable rounds I have played in competitive golf. The three state champions I played with were awesome company. It was a very friendly atmosphere considering what was at stake. Lots of banter and at times some very nice golf was on view. The course was in superb condition and all Drummond Club staff and Heritage staff made the whole experience one I will not forget in a hurry.

We have an exciting new format for the 2009 event series, which is sure to create a more competitive and challenging experience for all players.
2008 WA SOCIAL EVENT Sunday, 5th October 2008
ARALUEN GOLF RESORT
Following are the new rules and conditions for 2009:
Our final WA social event for the 2008 event series was held at Araluen Golf Resort, located just 40 minutes from Perth’s CBD in the picturesque township of Roleystone. On approach, the scenery in this region is breathtaking as you wind your way up through the surrounding valleys and hills, which is a distinctive contrast to the coastal resort courses in WA.
Order of merit points will be allocated to each event. The top 12 place getters in the handicap division will be awarded points as follows
This 18-hole championship course, designed by Roger McKay and Michael Coate, is bordered by state forest on the south, west and east and by the Canning River on the north. The course features wide sloping fairways with large undulating greens, and with strategically placed water hazards and bunkers it is a challenging layout for golfers of all skill levels. Brett Ogle joined us for the event together with a capacity field of over 130 Drummond Club WA members. On the day we enjoyed fine sunny conditions and the course was in excellent condition. Our congratulations again to Araluen's management and staff for their course preparation and buffet lunch provided after the round, which was enjoyed on the outdoor terrace overlooking the golf course. Prior to official presentations, Nerrisa Waite from Oakley, WA, well known to many members in the West, conducted a trivia competition and provided a range of great prizes sponsored by Oakley. Brett Ogle was our MC on the day and entertained us with his trademark humour during presentations. Congratulations to Anson Claes, our winner of the Individual Stableford Division with a score of 39 points. Following tradition in the West, there was also a competition for Drummond Golf WA staff. We are pleased to announce that Darren Tardrew (with the lowest staff score) has won this prestigious award and as a result Darren must must wear a pink apparel theme at the next event!

Kingston Heath, VIC Thanks for a great day at Kingston Heath yesterday. Great job again, and well organized – again without a hitch. Well done on turning on the weather this year. Peter, Tom and Ron had a great time, and were very impressed with the course and also how the day was run. The other Bendigo customers Ken Giovanetti and Leo Hogan also had a great day. Lincoln Ferrari, Drummond Golf Bendigo, VIC Eynesbury Golf Club, VIC Just wanted to pass on my very best thanks to you both for a well run event. Nothing seemed to be a problem and to me everything went quite smoothly. Hugh, John, Daryl and myself had the most enjoyable day. With the amount of bunkers the short game school that I did with Nadene, Sandy and Gareth really helped too. Obviously the weather was perfect which goes a long way to making the day the success it was. I will be endeavouring to attend more of these days in the future. Murray Saunders, VIC Twin Creeks, NSW Thank you so much for a fabulous day. The group that I played with had a great day also. The game of golf at Twin Creeks was professionally done in all aspects. The course was a pleasure to play. It was a fantastic course in great condition. The greens were a little slow, but the same for everyone. The gentlemen I played with were, my CEO, a fellow work colleague and a future business partner. The luncheon was great with ample food. We locked in a deal as well, which made it even sweeter. Can’t wait to do it again. Craig Layton, NSW
> GOLF TRAVEL Hyatt Regency Coolum, QLD Just thought I’d provide some feedback on the package. Everything went very smoothly throughout the stay. We were very happy with the facilities and the service delivery. In short very satisfied customers. I would recommend both the Hyatt to other travellers and the Drummond Club service. Robyn Lilttle, VIC Peppers Moonah Links Resort, VIC Just wanted to give you a quick email to say that we really enjoyed our trip to Peppers Moonah Links. The courses probably got the better of us but they were presented immaculately, and were great to play on. The accommodation was good and all the staff that we had contact with were very helpful. I would go back there any day. Thanks for your efforts in organizing the trip. Peter Durrant, VIC Cypress Lakes Resort, NSW Thank you for helping to organise our two day golf trip to the Hunter Valley. Cypress Lakes and the Vintage were absolutely fantastic, and the accommodation at Cypress Lakes was excellent. Thank you again Lee for organising an enjoyable experience.
