The Renaissance of Classic Modernism

The Renaissance of Classic Modernism In 1930, Adolf Loos celebrated his sixtieth bir thday. It was on this day that the great architect and father of modernism coined a remarkable phrase: The culture of a people is revealed by the nature of its washing amenities and toilets. An incontrover tible affirmation of the impor tance of uncompromising interior design in the bathroom. Perhaps it was in championing this cause that Duravit was inspired to create a washbasin whose famous octagonal shape remains as modern today as it was 70 years ago. PURE GLAM DECOR design by Federico Rossi

Dear Readers,

Editor in Chief Lara Mansour Sawaya lara.m@amedadvertising.com

How would your dream home be like? Would it be by a sandy beach, on a mountain, in the country, a villa, or would it be an apartment in the city? Everybody always dreams of having a house looking like this or like that, and even if we already live in our dream home, we’re always dreaming of doing something different with it, and honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. That happens because we’re always seeing something new, always wanting to improve the look and comfort of our space or simply because we get tired of our things eventually. I know we should appreciate what we have and where we are, I really mean it when I say it, but at the same time I think it’s so fun to just let our imagination go far away to places we’d love to be. Are you ready to dream with me? It all starts with the fundamentals of the house and the parts of it where we have to invest the most. Kitchens, Bathrooms and Ceramics, and when those are done the rest comes in easily. Checkout the latest collections that we feature through the pages of this issue and get inspired.

Enjoy the read! Lara Mansour Sawaya Editor in Chief 31 www.edgemagazine-me.com

The Organising Committee of the International Property Show (IPS) has announced that the exhibition would be held from 30 March – 1 April 2015 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. This edition of the show which allows direct selling of property units at the exhibition will be the biggest to date. Organisers described the event as a first-of-itskind among specialised exhibitions, which allows visitors to compare prices of residential, commercial and mixed-use units and take a decision on the exhibition

Dawood Al Shezawi, CEO, Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions, organizers of the International Property Show (IPS), said: “We have received record confirmations seven months ahead of the actual event. We anticipate hordes of visitors to the show as several exhibitors will come with their entire sales team to interact with as many institutional and individual buyers.” DLD estimates show that the value of real estate transactions in the UAE is growing at 38% annually. This reflects the vitality of UAE real-estate vis-à-vis other markets in the region, enticing many developers to shift focus on the UAE because of the ideal investment environment and smooth logistics. IPS is expected to attract 300 exhibitors from 120 countries. Strong exhibitor

representations are expected from countries such as the UAE, Turkey, UK, USA/Canada, Spain and Australia. IPS 2015 will also have pavilions from India, Philippines and Pakistan to cater to the expat communities from these countries with an interest in buying a property back in their home country. Al Shezawi added: “What makes IPS unique is that visitors, mainly individuals, will always buy a unit at a price lower than the market price, as the competition is fierce and the prices are known to the visitors. More significantly, IPS is supported by governmental institutions, which reinforces the underlying message that the exhibitors adhere to UAE’s real estate laws and regulations.”

IPS brings together elite players in the real estate sector, including sales agents and marketing agencies, operators in hospitality industry as well as civil engineers, architects and interior designers under one roof. It is also held in at the crucial time -- end of the first quarter -- coinciding with the announcement of several new projects on local, regional and international levels. IPS is organised by Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions which is perceived as one of the leading exposition and conference organizers in the UAE. The company has grown within and contributed to the exhibition industry and have gained the reputation of being one of the leading experts in all aspects related to the exhibition industry.

LAUNCH FOAM DOME AT 100 % DESIGN Foam Dome is an innovative installation for this year’s Kitchen and Bathroom Hub at 100% Design, created by Turkishceramics, Kitchen & Bathroom Hall sponsor, and London-based practice, vPPR Architects. As the Kitchen & Bathroom section’s main hub, Foam Dome focuses on the theme of cleanliness. The pavilion is comprised of foam, creating a sculptural, utopian dreamland, which is constructed of a lightweight, white geodesic dome that hangs from above. The dome is covered by a mesh material and foam, representing a breathing membrane. Below the dome sits the magical interior of the hub featuring Turkish ceramic products, encouraging visitors to dip in and engage with basins to tiles and a 160 diameter bathtub designed by Ross Lovegrove.

Jessica Reynolds, Director of vPPR Architects, says: ‘We’ve designed Foam Dome around the idea of cleanliness, referencing the purifying and luxurious experience of a spa. We are fascinated by the architecture of foam and its ambiguous character. The composition and atmospheric quality of the Foam Dome is serene and inviting, drawing people towards its effervescent, glistening and constantly changing envelope. We think that incorporating the characteristics of foam into the pavilion is a playful approach to the Kitchen and Bathroom hub.’ Reinforcing the indulgent spa aesthetics, the hub is also dressed with piles of soft white towels and white chairs for relaxing. The proposal also builds upon a current cultural interest in foams, from the philosophical writings of

November 2014 - January 2015

Peter Sloterdijk, to culinary experiments by Heston Blumenthal and the foaming artworks of Michel Blazy. Bahadir Kayan, Chairman of Turkishceramics, says: “We are proud to be the sponsors of the Kitchen and Bathroom section at this year’s 100% Design. It has been a pleasure

working with vPPR Architects on the Foam Dome, creating a unique installation that you wouldn’t normally find at your typical trade fair. It’s exciting to see how a contemporary British design practice has found inspiration in the tradition of Turkish bath culture, reinterpreting it in a sophisticated modern style.”

Philippe Grohe, Head of Axor, and Italian architect and designer Antonio Citterio presented their latest collaboration to more than 300 international guests, including top representatives of the media. During the premiere week in Milan Antonio Citterio emphasized the core elements of this third collection: “This most recent collaboration is the ‘essence of luxury’. “We have been working with Antonio Citterio successfully for more than 14 years. The story that began with the Axor Citterio collection is continually evolving, and this was clearly visible in Milan: Axor Citterio E is a charming combination of modern and classical features – elegant and timeless products of the highest quality that not only enhance the bathroom as a whole, but also our experience with the element of water,” concludes Philippe Grohe.

the Axor Universal Accessories: “When I design something, I strive to create products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. For instance, bars inside the shower function as a support for other accessories and serve as towel bars outside the shower”. Guests at last month’s launch event were able to experience the balance between functionality and aesthetics and the harmony between classic and modern design elements first-hand in a completely new showroom setting designed by Antonio Citterio.

Attendance at Cersaie 2014, the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings held in Bologna from 22 to 26 September, once again topped 100,000 visits, with increases in numbers of both unique visitors and international attendees. The commercial side of the

event was complemented by initiatives catering for the world of architecture, interior design, installation and end consumers. Representativeness and international appeal are the key characteristics of Cersaie, which for the first time opened its doors to exhibitors

of wood, marble and natural stone. The 2014 show hosted 945 exhibitors (45 more than in 2013), including 339 nonItalian companies (+37) from 38 countries. It also attracted total attendance of 100,985 visitors (+0.2%), including 46,599 international visitors (46.14% of the total). The figure for ‘first admissions’ (a measure of unique visitors) also rose to 66,096, 3.6% more than last year. Numbers of international visitors increased even more sharply (+4.1%) to 23,363. The media were also well represented with 578 journalists in attendance (+3.39%), two fifths of whom came from outside Italy (235 journalists). These figures confirm Cersaie’s position as a key venue for developing global business in the ceramic floor and wall tile and bathroom furnishing sectors, while the more than 150 countries

of origin of the visitors underscore the show’s powerful role as an engine for international trade. Cersaie is a vital appointment for architects, interior designers, tile fixers and the general public. This year Toyo Ito became the sixth consecutive Pritzker prize winner to give Cersaie’s keynote lecture in front of an audience of more than 1,700 people. There was also strong interest in all the events in the ‘building dwelling thinking’ cultural programme, which for the first time granted training credits for participating architects. >>

On Thursday and Friday the event saw the participation of special guest Paola Marella. Another very popular event was Cer-Sea, the exhibition exploring ways of exploiting seaside resorts at all times of day and throughout the year so as to improve their capacity to generate revenues and attract tourists. Sören Strayle

Downtown Design

A roundup of the design fair and exclusive interviews with Gaggenau & Kohler Designers

Gaggenau Designer Sören Strayle is one of only 5 global Gaggenau designers. His role is to simultaneously bring to life the values of the Gaggenau brand, so that you can see, feel and hear them. Sören develops new perspectives and creative ideas from everyday experiences and stimulating exchanges with experts.

Sören, what does design mean to you personally? To me, design is more than just an aesthetical plus. It is important that the design is able to help the user do things in a very easy and intuitive way. Therefore functionality is also very important to me.

What is Gaggenau’s design philosophy? How would you describe it?

Downtown Design, the Middle East’s platform for contemporary, quality design, announced a highly successful 2nd edition, with a 40% increase in the number of visitors of the past year and an increase of 20% in the number of exhibitors. The fair was held under the Patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, and under the sponsorship of Emaar Properties and Dubai Culture. It took place at The Venue at the foot of the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, Emaar’s flagship development in Downtown Dubai.

German design that is evolutionary, not revolutionary. For example, when it comes to our ovens – we developed them in the 60s but step by step, we are improving on them in terms of design and operating concepts. Where do you draw your inspirations from?

Organized by the Art Dubai Group and themed “Original Design”, the second edition of Downtown Design showcased a multi-faceted programme that linked historical design with the future, global with home-grown, and innovation with imagination. The fair attracted a record number of international, regional and local visitors who had the chance to learn about the latest trends in design, whilst enjoying a packed program of collection launches by the world’s trendsetting brands, installations by regional designers and innovations never before seen. EDGE was present at the fair and spoke to two renowned global designers in the kitchen & bathroom industry Gaggenau & Kohler. These two exclusive interviews will give you an insight to the trends of the industry, the latest novelties from both brands and more.

Gaggenau Stand at Downtown Design

My inspirations come from the exchange with experts regarding user interface, human machine interfaces and even exchanges with star chefs. For instance, the steam oven was developed in the 90s and brought to market in 2000. This was developed with a French star chef. It was also the first time we brought this professional steam cooking into the private sector. Of course, I also draw my inspirations from art and architecture.

Exclusive According to you, what are the elements all kitchen appliances should have in order for them to be easy to use and appreciated? According to me, they should not be in the forefront but in the background. The user should always be the focus. Intuitive use is very important to me and so is timeless design. Appliances should still be loved in 10 or 15 years. If you look at the forerunners of our appliances, they still look very modern. Tell us about the latest novelties at Gaggenau. We recently introduced the new Ovens 400 Series (normal and steam ovens). I’d like to especially mention the incredible user interface because it is very intuitive and easy to use. It boasts a clean design of solid stainless steel

and handle-less doors that can be automatically opened with a single touch. Another interesting product is the CX480 - Full surface induction cooktop. Underneath the glass ceramic in this product, there are 48 micro inductors that make it possible for the user to put a pot anywhere they desire. The cookware automatically identifies the position and heats exactly where necessary. It is operated intuitively using an extra large TFT touch display which shows the positions, sizes and shapes of cookware.

Mark Bickerstaffe Head of Design, Kohler Co. Being in charge of new product development, Mark Bickerstaffe’s role is to develop innovative products that take the bathroom out of connotations of secrecy to something that becomes part of a proud product display for the house. The aim is to turn every bathroom experience into a spa experience.

You are Head of Design at Kohler. Tell us more about your role and what it entails.

Tell us more about your participation in Downtown Design and the importance of it to the brand? I believe it is very important – it is a good platform for us to showcase the brand and design.

I am responsible for the design direction and strategy, and all of the kitchen & bathroom products. I am also responsible for keeping track of trends and realizing what consumers really want and need.

Gaggenau - 400 Series Combi Steam Oven

What are the popular trends today? Colour. We are seeing things going from being all in white to a lot of richer, darker colour combinations and materials. We are also seeing beautiful uses of copper, brass and golds; beautiful metal combinations really. While the clean and contemporary finishes are still popular, sophisticated warmth is trending as well.

If you had to recommend two products to consumers from Gaggenau appliances, what would they be? The Full Surface Induction Cooktop - because it is a smarter way to cook. I would also recommend the steam ovens since it can be used as both a normal and/or steam oven. Vegetables also taste much better when using a steam oven!

What does design mean to you personally?

Which ones do you have in your home?

It is a balance of being useful, meaningful and beautiful.

I have older models of the Induction Cooktop and Oven.

What do you think makes the perfect bathroom today?

What’s next for you at Gaggenau?

The perfect bathroom allows you to rush through it in the morning when you are late. It’s all about accessibility and storage. It should also be your place of sanctuary, relaxation and private escape. So it really comes down to products and design in order to get that combination.

We are working on the next generation of the ovens at the moment. There will be many changes however I cannot disclose them just yet. Also, we are always working on smart kitchens and devices.

all about music in the shower. It is simple and fun. Hearing music from where the water is coming from is a really fun and engaging experience. Kallista ‘Per Se’ – This is our luxury interiors brand in the bathroom. The new ‘Per Se’ collection developed recently is all about achieving simple contemporary sophistication with a wide variety of materials and luxurious finishes. We are really keen on encouraging people to mix and match so that it gives uniqueness. Numi – The Numi is our flagship toilet. It has been around for a couple of years and it’s still a toilet that looks very good, is highly functional and easy to use. Sok – This has also been around for a while. It is an overflowing bath with a

whirlpool experience. It allows for a gentle massage with very fine bubbles. Because it is so deep and always overflowing, the temperature is always the same. It is a very great experience that you can immerse yourself in.

Mark, if you could pick three products from Kohler to make up your dream bathroom, what would they be? The DTV+ in the shower because I know I can make an unbelievable experience with it. It works fantastically well. Second would be the Terrace range of sanitary-ware which is a new range designed to be super simple and delivers really good when it comes to accessibility and storage. It is available in simple clean colour choices. The third product I would pick is from the new faucets coming up

next year but since I can’t really tell you about it just yet, I am going to pick the Kallista ‘Per Se’ Collection for its beauty, refinement and simplicity.

Kohler - Sok, a whole-body immersion infinity bathtub

According to you, how has the bathroom & kitchen industry changed in recent years?

you go to in order to really look after yourself. What is Kohler’s philosophy?

I think it has become more sophisticated in what can actually be done. You can now create an interior in the bathroom with quality just as high as the living room. That was not possible 20 years ago – people would actually struggle to make it happen. Not anymore. What do the bathrooms of the future look like? Well, they are not particularly different in how they look but they will be more like a living room. We are learning to make materials tolerant to water. Bathrooms will also be more connected in terms of communications and entertainment. It will also be a space for health and wellness. We think it will be the place

We have a fundamental philosophy; we have to be original. The only way to do that is if you truly understand the person you are trying to persuade to use your products. That means you have to spend a lot of time learning from people instead of just sitting and designing. It is true that at the end of the day, you have to turn it into a beautiful design but it should also have that innate usefulness and beauty that makes something truly timeless. Why? Because bathrooms & kitchens are not there for a day or a year; they are not fashion. It has to be endured and enjoyed for many years. How significant is being part of Downtown Design to the brand?

Kohler - Numi

We know that there are so much exciting things going on in Dubai. Our customers here have the opportunity to explore their individuality in design that is different to a lot of other places around the world. The market has a huge potential here. What are the latest novelties from Kohler and those you are showcasing at Downtown Design? We are showing iconic leading products that we are proud of. Karbon facuets – The Karbon faucet delivers water exactly where you want it. It allows you to extend the faucet fully, lower it or fold it out. An inthe-deck joystick valve gives you precise control of water, temperature and flow. It is available in many beautiful finishes.

Briolette – Lots of people do glass but very few of them do glass like this. The Briolette glass sink displays a uniquely faceted shape inspired by the precisely cut surfaces of precious stone. Gently curved walls highlight the natural textural qualities of glass and create a striking reflective effect. The mix and match possibilities in the finishes gives you a wonderful edge.

What is next for you and Kohler? Give us some hints about the upcoming collections.

Kohler - Moxie wireless speaker-shower combo

DTV+ – We are the leaders in digital showering and by that I mean really sophisticated showering. The DTV+ allows us to program it so that it goes through a whole cycle of water, temperature, music and lighting in order to create a whole showering experience. There’s nothing quite like it. Moxie – The Moxie was released two years ago but we have extended the line to include different sizes and colours. It’s

We’ve got a number of things coming through. We have done some hard work on our faucet range to give beautiful, refined, contemporary and minimal products with beautiful furnishings. That will give you some really good materials to complement many interior styles. We’ve worked hard on our sanitary ranges. We have a new range coming out targeted to hospitality that is all about beautiful detail that is deeply functional and helps the hotel operators immensely. And that is just a snapshot of all the beautiful things we have coming up at Kohler.

54

issue 31

November 2014 - January 2015

THE HISTORY Every brand has a beginning, a story to tell, our dates back to 1950 when Elio Baggio started the company in the village of Marostica (Nord-East of Italy), being his initial main business the operation of an enameling plant. The plant gradually specialized in body components of stoves and cookers which were required by major manufacturers of Northern Italy that , after the post-second world war reconstruction, were rapidly growing with the aim to satisfy the huge demand for basic household appliances, like cookers and refrigerators The business growth perspectives led to the construction of a new factory in 1960, in the town of Bassano del Grappa and to concentrate the activity in the direct manufacturing of freestanding cookers for the domestic market. The factory brand became ELBA, as a result of the acronym of the founder name, Elio Baggio. The brand, with the present logo, was first registered in Italy in 1964 .

After that ELBA Company began to export its cookers to European countries first and then started his strategy of expansion to Middle-East, Northern Africa and Far east countries, becoming a specialist of standard and large freestanding cookers, before enlarging

his range in the following years to built-in appliances also. In 2006 the company name changed to Fisher&Paykel Appliances Italy, as a result of the acquisition of the F&P Group, but this did not impact on the plans for expansion of the Elba brand worldwide.

PRESENCE AND UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE MARKETS

Thanks to the undisputed expertise and knowledge of his product development team, the manufacturing capability of a factory always balancing efficiency and flexibility without compromising on quality, the passion and the enthusiasm

of a group of people visiting or supporting clients from all around the world to share in each market the love for cooking, Elba has become one of the most recognized and appreciated brands in cooking appliances industry. In Middle East markets in particular the presence of Elba brand dates back to the 70’s when they were, among the very first Italian brands, to approach this part of the world, with an open minded approach aimed to acknowledge and satisfy the local and specific cooking habits and requirements. With an extensive product portfolio that ranges from Fan Gas option to Multifunction electric and pyro 60 and 90 cms built-in Ovens, to 105 litres large cavity for Freestanding cookers in all Fuels options, to newly designed heat resistant ceramic glass Cooktops up to latest technology updated induction tops, the Elba branded appliance offer really reflects the mission of a purely cooking manufacturer specialist, with the additional and exclusive touch that only the full made in Italy concept can provide !

TONCELLI Nantìa

issue 31

November 2014 - January 2015

Nantìa is an innovative project that draws its inspiration from traditional kitchens, important houses, with solid roots joined in international taste. The cupboards, the large stove, the generous hood are traditional elements redesigned in a contemporary and professional manner, lending great value to the Nantìa kitchen. The use of wood paneling, combined with Nantìa special elements complete the furniture and project the collection into a broader concept of “global furnishing

decoration”. Nantìa is instantly recognizable by its door, with clear slats thanks to the use of a double slice of wood.. The wooden doors are made of high-quality sliced “Nuvola” Oak and Macroter “Cielo” in 25 mm thickness. The 36cm handles are made of bronze-plated metal and the structure is finished in bronze with sides and accessories in black . The tops designed to be extra thick are in marble “Breccia Paradiso”. Between the grey and hazelnut shades of the

fragments, we can see subtle effect created by “calcite”, which stands out clearly even when it is extremely fine, resulting in an elegant and pleasing ornamental design. Breccia Paradiso marble has good mechanical characteristics, it is resistant to compression, bending, cutting, shock and surface fiction, just like the best compact materials. The new metal and glass grid frames the large Island hood with additional new functions.

BRUMMEL CUCINE

dolce vita

The pleasure of the Italian Style In the Dolce Vita kitchen the pleasure of Italian style finds an exceptional exponent in a sinuous, functional and elegant environment. The high quality of the oak finish which is brushed, varnished and glazed with silver powder, the design of the steel handles and the Amira lamps offer the ideal setting for an exceptional protagonist like the Diamond Fall island with granite counter-top. The effect is stunning: the colors of the counter-top enhance the value of the material thanks to the contrast of light and shade created by the combination of metal, stone and earth fossilized for thousands of years. The style is projected towards the island where the two lateral cylinders, again enhanced by the Diamond Fall granite countertop, hide and display multi-functional compartments and a well-stocked cellar.

ETNA DESIGN: RODOLFO DORDONI

HD23

DC10

DESIGN: MASSIMO CASTAGNA

DESIGN: VINCENZO DE COTIIS DC10 is the kitchen designed in 2010 by Vincenzo De Cotiis for Rossana RB. It includes island and peninsula components for customized site specific installations. It does not include additional cabinets but is easily combined with other Rossana cabinets and kitchen.

76

Etna, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, exceeding the model of the contemporary minimalist kitchen, expresses a new concept of cultured and elegant kitchen for a space planned to a man’s size. According to Rossana’s philosophy, the kitchen space is a living place, natural extension of the living room, where food preparation are cohabitates with the tasks of entertaining and hosting in accordance with this informal and international lifestyle which is nowadays common in all places around the world.

issue 31

November 2014 - January 2015

Massimo Castagna reconsiders and develops the basic typology of the contemporary kitchen realizing an original and innovative project that goes over the concept of

kitchen characterized by the door: The new project foresees base units with a low plinth and a big volumetry offering a great storage space, completed by many special components that, as objects, can be combined to

the composition of the base units proposing new meanings and functionality with a high degree of personalization. No longer thought of as a single block kitchen coordinated but as free aggregation of individual items.

HT50

DESIGN: MASSIMO CASTAGNA

HT50 revisits and modernises a theme that has always been particularly dear to Rossana, the concept of the portal kitchen, which gave rise to a number of superlative quality and highly successful products made by Rossana in the 1980s. The work area is conceived as a niche demarcated between the base units and wall units and as deep as the base units themselves, which forms a portal structure. The niche is furbished with under wall unit elements, open compartments, and counter top containers with coordinated finishes, to create individual functional areas. The HT50 kitchen system also allows many other configurations - not only based on the portal concept - enabling an outstanding degree of freedom to create tailor-made personalised solutions.

TU23

DESIGN: MASSIMO CASTAGNA To contain, to put away, to order. That is also what the kitchen is. And Rossana has tackled this specific theme with the professionalism it has acquired over fifty years of experience by offering a solution that is both functional and elegantly creative: the new TU23 system of kitchen units came about to coexist with all the Rossana kitchen systems. “It goes with anything, we say of jackets. The same could be said of a TU23 unit, irrespective of the kitchen you already have or of the new Rossana kitchen you want. And not only that, the doors of an elegant unit conceal and encapsulate a complete kitchen system, satisfying the needs of those with no love for kitchens that are visible in the day zone, yet do not want to forego a high-quality solution.

SCAVOLINI

An elegant and minimalist atmosphere with the new "Ki collection" designed by Nendo for Scavolini.

The Ki collection combines the prestigious Italian craftsmanship of Scavolini and the distinctive approach of Nendo, the Japanese studio headed by Oki Sato, which interprets design as surprise, experimentation and refined details. Designed for kitchen and bathroom environments, the proposal aptly reflects Scavolini's current international strategy, already apparent in other recent proposals of the brand designed by prestigious

designers, such as Oraïto, Diesel Creative Team, Michael Young, Karim Rashid, King&Miranda Design and Giugiaro Design. The concept about Ki is trying to make it “hidden” into two objects to create space and offer a complete design freedom: a container, an object only by strong connotation, synthesis of an expressive code that can be repeated ad infinitum and a wooden shelf from pure essentiality (Ki in Japanese, meaning at the same time container and wood).

The collection reveals a rigorous interpretation of minimalistic and extremely contemporary taste, and embodies exclusive values, creative thinking, innovative challenges, on-going research, genuine Italian quality and finely-worked details. With this project, Scavolini envisions new ways of inhabiting space, with the pivotal element—the container—resting on linearshaped shelves. What emerges is an actual storage system

80

issue 31

November 2014 - January 2015

that dominates compositions designed for both kitchens and bathrooms, with Scavolini Bathrooms. Ki comes with an exclusive range of decorative finishes specifically created for Scavolini, including three wood-effect nuances that blend artisan know-how and advanced technologies to perfection. The kitchen In the Ki kitchen, which includes linear, island and

peninsula compositions, the containers rest on shelves and function as wall units, or re-appear in the sink and hob units—novel, important elements that add a personal touch. An absolute total look: the doors, profile handles, upstands, back panels, plinths and tops come with a single finish. The doors and deep drawers of base units open through an under-top profile handle. The specially designed seats and cooker hood complete the scenario envisioned by Nendo.

“The basic concept, the basic story about this kitchen is trying to make it hidden into two objects, because the kitchen is basically filled with so many objects. I want to make it hidden to wooden shelves and a white bowl, that was the initial idea that I had in mind. In reality it is not that simple because there are so many different functions, there are so many details. So this small details in the end create the special moment, the special feeling within yourself. Have a lot of space, a lot of freedom and something that makes you feel very relaxed in a way. I named it Ki, meaning bowl in Japanese, but also means wood, so one word Ki explains the white bowl and the wooden shelves. And then the idea expanded into the bathroom, focusing on the shelves, on their esthetics and functionality.” Oki Sato The bathroom For this environment, the container replaces traditional wall units and also defines the wash basin, offered in the lay-on, semi-recessed, under-

top and free-standing version. The mirrors, rigorous slabs ideally resting on the tops and against the walls, conceal a practical LED lighting system. The lights—in the pendant or wall-mounted

version—are an additional furnishing element and were specifically designed for this collection, similarly to the free-standing towel racks which can also house one of the containers.

Designed for those who love things that are not only beautiful, but above all original and exclusive. It fits perfectly in those types of "young" houses such as lofts in which rationalisation of space is fundamental. The story of Binova began in an artisan workshop, in 1958, in Petrignano d’Assisi. It started with Giovanni and Francesco Bolletta, who from a very tender age learned how to work wood with precision, appreciate its qualities and recognise its spirit while working at shops of various carpenters in Assisi. Giovanni added further to his craftsman’s skills at General Motors by acquiring specialised knowledge of highpowered car bodies, which then enhanced with in-depth knowledge of mechanics and advanced technologies. This marked the start of Binova and its story as an Umbrian company in the world of highquality kitchens. Fifty years of research and design are the guarantee that extraordinary care is given to the choice of materials, processing techniques and production systems for Binova furnishing solutions, while close collaboration with

90

Binova Techno-Logical Kitchens

architects and designers of renowned prestige ensure a taste for a sophisticated contemporary look that is also ergonomic and functional. The company’s artisan past, inherited from the family tradition, and its constant search for quality in every detail, from the interior finishes to the raw materials, blend together perfectly in a kitchen space with simple, elegant forms. Aesthetics, which are always

November 2014 - January 2015

at the service of functionality, combine with technology leaving the right amount of space to the potential of innovation. Modular configurations, laid against the wall or arranged as an island, are placed with grace and simplicity, returning the scene to the person who lives in it as the central focus. The space maintains a formal purity and intangible lightness where one can deftly move around amidst taste, flavours and the senses.

Always an expression of spatial continuity, the kitchen environments contribute to a household organisation that seeks to maintain the order needed for the preparation of dishes, while compactness and solidity, the heart and spirit of Binova kitchen furnishings, allow rigorously elegant Italian design to emerge in a flowing, unexpected way, guaranteeing, overall, quality unaffected by the passing of time.

Prima AV PRIMA “avant-garde” continues its own journey, an exploration of the relationship between kitchen and living area, the continuous interlacing of functions, rituals and daily needs. Time captivates moments spent in private, with the family or extended family, in a “continuum” of interaction. Dialogue could define a “Spatial Presence”, well established within an open home that is no longer afraid

of an informal outlook, where the perception of space is changing, no longer an extravagance permitted only to a few. PRIMA AV once again returns to its roots, which in 1992 so deeply transformed the international kitchen system, interpreting once more this relationship between operational and functional space and the area set aside for dialogue and communication, confirming the changes and

respecting its own values at the same time. The kitchen moves away from the walls, opening itself up to the other rooms producing a new relationship with space. From the bottom to the top, a new architecture containing and exhibiting, highlights a virtual boundary that hides or reveals what is happening beyond. The aerial nature of wall units is confirmed by having

them drop from the ceiling in non-structured manner and by being accessible on two sides, symmetrically or asymmetrically, and they can be dynamically changed thanks to the system of sliding doors. The wall units confirm this dual outlook where the front merges with the back. The new perimeter of the worktops seems to accentuate the rising horizontal surfaces and the vertical surfaces of the base units, giving weightlessness and emphasizing the aesthetics of the new, thicker doors.

It refers to the modus operandi, the method, and the interpretation that can be used in the kitchen area, or everything that revolves around it. Modus is not a final destination but merely a stop on a journey that is completely new every day.

The architecture of interiors and the decorative environment Modus seeks to build a true relationship with interior architecture. It transforms a space rather than merely camouflaging it, changing the very meaning of “furnishings” into “architectural elements or components”. Modus re-formulates the relationship between the kitchen and living room, re-defining these areas as a “living kitchen”. The series re-works the typical meaning of the kitchen and living room as environments, transforming itself into architecture by becoming a representative symbol or an elegant and essential laboratory.

Kitchen Taps

NEWFORM kitchen

A world made of sensations and perceptions. A kaleidoscope of tones that leads senses into a space that moves as though it wanted to come to light And to the light it comes when rationality fades away, body and mind light up, and first drive swimmingly runs towards an image of uncommon intensity and freshness. Perfumes and colors, sound and tastes, strong or tender,

real or imagined. Design brings to light modern experience, and increases the chances to feel the environment through the vision, the listening and the exploration of one's own places. A sort of encounter with the architecture of the room is experienced: as though the space became a kind of cloth for the body, where part of forms goes over and other is absorbed. Designing kitchen taps does not just mean creating

something that has an ideal image and function that satisfy most people; it rather means knowing how to make a design with a temperament that can be "relished". The basic concept of Kitchen lines is intended to achieve a twofold objective: on the one side, rediscovering the complexity of sensations gifted by design, and on the other showing its relationship with those who experience it everyday.

Tell us more about Taps & More ‘s history.

TAPS & MORE is now composed of two operational platforms:

TAPS & MORE was initially established as a wholesale distribution company for European sanitary related brands, with the sole purpose of providing readily available stock for distributors throughout the Arabian Gulf.

TAPS AND MORE TRADING LLC and TAPS & MORE MARKETING CONSULTANTS.

The business model evolved in later years to encompass additional services for our distributor / partner base, and according manufacturers we represent. Also our geographical territory of coverage expanded accordingly.

What services are offered by the company? TAPS & MORE today offers an extensive scope of services:

when there is a delayed delivery requirement of goods from their side. This is usually the case where project supply schedules have been interrupted / delayed for reasons beyond their control and we accommodate them accordingly.

• We have a Project Division

They have shown confidence, patience and trust in my team and I. This has also played a pivotal role in allowing us to achieve what we have gone on to achieve. I also owe a special thank you to the man who gave me the opportunity to begin my career in the sanitary industry, Mr. Jeurgen Lorenz.

which is dedicated to visiting Architects, Designers and Developers, with the intention of aiding the specification process for the manufacturers we represent, and for the benefit of our distributors / partners on the ground.

• Another service to highlight is that our territorial coverage generally extends from Morocco to India, though some country exclusions exist for certain brands. Basically, we cover a very large territory including the Middle East, Near East, North Africa and Cyprus. Our Headquarters is in Dubai, and we have people on the ground in key locations throughout our territory.

I have also been a husband and father in absentium, so I really should say a big thank you to my wife and kids for the latitude they have afforded

How are you performing in the region? How do you evaluate the growth of the company since its foundation and who has played a role in where you are today? Conducting business in the territory we cover is rather challenging at the present time. It seems that every year becomes more and more difficult, so we are constantly inspiring and encouraging our team to be even more creative in how they approach

I am grateful to everyone who has played a role in my life and TAPS & MORE is where it is today for many reasons. TAPS & MORE is basically the product of everyone it serves, and the business model has evolved according to the needs

of everyone involved and related to it. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in the region? We always strive to be the best we can when performing our various tasks and responsibilities. Dealing with all parties in an honest and transparent manner is part of our value system. Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of people today who only chase money and crave success at any cost, and this includes bending the rules to put it mildly.

Which region is the brand’s largest market? Our largest markets are the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

each and every daily task. Basically, in times of adversity, we are constantly seeking opportunity. TAPS & MORE has been a tremendous success story since its inception, and the credit for this must go to many people, including our distributors / partners who have been standing behind me and supporting me for almost a quarter century. Furthermore, I must sincerely thank our dear manufacturers with whom I have worked historically and also the manufacturers with whom I started working more recently.

Duplicates from other countries are another constant menace, and this continues to be the case for many successful brands in the market. The global economy has not been stable in recent years, so this is also something we are all having to contend with.

Tell us more about the kitchen and bathroom industry and how it’s changed in recent years. Ironically, the kitchen and bathroom industry has changed in many ways in recent years, yet it has not. Technology has certainly improved. Water saving is at the forefront of many innovations. Green manufacturing processes and the production of environmentally friendly finished products is becoming a trend in many industries, not just our own. But on a design level, you have the new and extremely modern different styles, while some older models are coming back into fashion and demand. For example, we have been receiving requests lately for 2-handle mixers in gold plated finish, chrome & gold plated finish and antique brass finish with matching accessories and classical sanitary ware designs. This is not limited to one client base or culture. >>

BLANCO METRA 9 Interview

SILGRANIT™ PuraDur™ II

A variety of end-users including hotel developers are increasingly asking for these types of designs and finishes. We have therefore had to encourage some of the manufacturers we represent, to reintroduce them to cater to demand accordingly. Definitely, technology is far superior today than it has ever been, but human tastes and desires can be nostalgic even where the kitchen and bathroom industry is concerned. What are the most popular brands/products in your portfolio for the region? We like to think of all our brands as being important, and we value the contribution of each brand to our overall performance. It goes without saying that some brands contribute more than others to the overall success of our company, but it would be highly inappropriate to highlight them accordingly. Do you plan on adding more to the portfolio anytime soon? This is the million dollar question.

We presently don’t have such an intention, but we are also well aware that the industry can change direction rapidly and without warning. Mergers and acquisitions are common at this time, so to say “NO we will not add more brands to our portfolio” would not be prudent. For us, it is currently business as usual with the brands that we do represent, but we must keep an open mind to the dynamic of our exciting industry. Sometimes one gains from change and other times one loses from change, but one must always embrace change as it is inevitable. Since 2014 is coming to an end – tell us some of the highlights of the year and how do you perceive 2015 for the company? 2014 has not been the easiest year for us since conception, and we predict that 2015 is going to be an even more difficult year than 2014. This is of course our opinion based on what we are feeling from the different markets

that we operate in, and also on the feedback we are receiving from various distributors / partners.

have been somewhat erratic and we have had to revise our internal forecast on more than one occasion this year.

This year, we have exceeded our budgets and expectations in certain markets while we have been unable to achieve our budgets in other markets.

However, the TAPS & MORE family and all those related to it, will always consider 2014 as a memorable year due to the move we made to our new premises in Dubai Silicon Oasis. Moving office is never an easy task, but we wanted to invest and expand our operational platform, which is exactly what we have done.

The reality is that the markets

Bathroom Accessories Accessories: Kludi Germany 530260575 Mono basin mixer DN 15

Intuitive, natural operation KLUDI AMBA is intuitive to operate, by following the natural line of movement towards the mixer and gently opening up the top of the mixer towards the back. A light touch is enough to start the water flowing. Temperature is regulated with a simple, practised turn. As usual, it can be finely adjusted with pinpoint accuracy.

KLUDI AMBA The gentle beauty AMBA is new. AMBA is one-of-a-kind. AMBA is from KLUDI. It’s a real beauty with impressive outer and inner values. It’s gentle and it’s attractive. KLUDI AMBA is just asking you to get close to it, to touch it. KLUDI´S unique IntegralDesign

Finely adjusted with pinpoint accuracy As usual, the flow of water and temperature are easy to adjust with pinpoint accuracy. Proven cartridge technology is used for the fine adjustment, which is also integrated into KLUDI AMBA.

Discreet marking The red and blue marking blends discreetly into KLUDI AMBA’s overall design.

Graceful drainage fittings Instead of the entire connecting rod, only the elegant pull knob is visible for the drainage fitting of the KLUDI AMBA mono basin mixer. It butts against the mixer body. As an alternative to a drainage fitting, KLUDI AMBA also provides a push-open valve in the washbasin.

Even surfaces in handcrafted quality The extensive skills of an experienced taps specialist are needed to produce something as exceptional as the wellproportioned surfaces of the KLUDI AMBA single lever mixers with shower or combined bathand shower function. Only a closer look reveals the diverter for the shower function. It is perfectly integrated into the combination fitting. The stylish, polished chrome finish is manufactured in a complex process –understated, high-end design in hand-crafted quality.

KLUDI AMBA looks like it is cast in one piece, as the operating mechanism is an integral part of the homogeneous whole. The discreet red and blue marking is a sure sign: at times this part of the mixer body acts as a handle to regulate the flow of water and temperature. It only becomes obvious when this function is used, then it blends back into the overall form. KLUDI’s novel IntegralDesign is what makes KLUDI AMBA unique. It gives rise to a sculptural appearance that gratifies the senses, such as has never been achieved before so consistently. KLUDI AMBA takes fitting design to a new level.

The movable, nubshaped single jets create a quiet, soft and extensive shower spray, which is perceived as very pleasant by the users. The water outlet jets are also convincingly easy to clean: Any limescale which might occur can be easily removed by softly kneading them. An important quality factor is the integrated, pressureindependent flow restrictor. It is located in the adapter and reduces water consumption to 9 litres per minute, without any comfort being lost. Thereby, the flow of water remains constant independent of the water pressure. Thus, as all SCHELL shower heads, the "COMFORT“ also significantly saves water compared to “normal” shower heads. greatest flexibility in a small space. The upper storey is reached by a single staircase with a gallery offering access to the individual cubes. Each cube also has a private entrance area.

The construction of the energy-plus house is based on the “village-within-a-house” concept, as shared functions predominate when students live together. Six two-storey cubes, each composed of two independent living units, are arranged around a central common area, the “marketplace”. In addition to the marketplace, residents have a common cooking area, gallery and terrace. They are adapted to typical student activities. All the cubes offer an individual place of retreat and focus on private functions, such as sleeping, working and personal hygiene. ROOM WITH A VIEW An Holistic Way about the way to live the Bathroom

“Room with a view” is the new concept born from the collaboration between Rexa Design and the designer Monica Graffeo. Esperanto design Monica Graffeo The inspirations from the past and the simplicity of the actions for a contemporary bathroom collection, offer practical and emotional solutions to our daily needs. The study where the project is focused on, is related to the actions of everyday that people do in the bathroom, especially close the basin. Monica Graffeo takes inspiration to the concept of the toilet set and the lavishly decked table, where “the idea is to have all the things we need, available and simply reached, without given any chaos sensation, but opposite, as it happens with a lavishly decked table, they attract us to act easily on our daily routine’’.

Moode

design Rexa Design Studio and Monica Graffeo Moode is a modular and flexible bathroom’s collection, that can be customized in a sartorial way, thanks to the chance to dress the holder elements – on the side, on the door and on the top – with different kind of materials and finishes. The holder elements can be suspended or over-counted on varnished metal easels. The body is the same for all the finishes and it is realized with a decoration inspired to a tweed fabric, as the internal parts of the drawers. The mirrors, in Corian® or colored glass, can be matched with materials and colors to the tops and to the basins. Everything is easily reached thanks to use of the compartments that are integrated to the tops of the basins in Corian® or to the overcounted holders that remind the beauty of the lavishly decked tables. The transparent shelf of the mirror makes the objects suspended, without giving the space too much weight. In the finishes of Moode we introduced

the eucalyptus wood, with dark varies shades, very elegant , warm and pleasing liveliness. The name of Moode derives from the combination of 2 words Mood and Mode, this because the collection has been thought to be adapted to the evolutions of the taste and of the material’s research.

fonte

design Monica Graffeo Fonte (which means “fountain”) is a collection of washbasins, showers and receptacles in DuPont™ Corian® complete with solid elm wood accessories. Fonte was inspired by observing the everyday reality of the bathroom combined with a love for the Japanese philosophy of water. This project originated from a study of how we look after ourselves as well as a desire to create objects that differ from each other yet have specific functions and, together, create attractive landscapes. For this reason the collection contains elements of the

The objects are designed for actively taking care of yourself and your body. There are mobile cabinets for storing various objects or linen, séparés or screens with hooks, and benches, because it is great to sit and chat whilst you take care of your body and they are also useful for helping small children reach the washbasin on their own. All of these objects have been designed to be particularly attractive when they are filled with all the thousands of things we need every day: from beauty creams to foot salts, to combs, hair dryers, kids’ toys...

AQUA-SENSE

GRAFF: innovative design, contemporary aesthetic and beautiful products for the shower system AQUA-SENSE, the future of living design The newest collection of GRAFF, AQUA-SENSE, is destined to become the future of shower design, confirming the company’s commitment to design, innovation and sustainability. AQUA-SENSE is a full sensory experience, a shower system inspired by the feeling and luxury one experiences at SPAs; created for a discerning clientele who want to achieve both an innovative and high-style design with an eye towards the environment.

The system is well equipped with hand-shower, footshower and adjustable side body-sprays. Material: polished stainless steel Finishes: 4 colors RGB white, red, blue and green

Wall-mounted waterfall The collection plays a leading role with these four elements of design: • Electronic system with ceiling-mounted shower-head, RGB effect, speakers and touchscreen • waterfall • wall-mounted cascade and rainfall showerhead • wall-mounted cascade and rainfall with RGB LED shower-head

The electronic system with ceiling-mounted shower-head creates a very intense central rainfall effect resembling a real waterfall. The RGB LED changes color, shaping diffused chromatic lines to produce a soothing effect of the bathroom environment. The system is controlled by a touch-screen with simple and intuitive interface controlling water functions, color changes, music and videos.

This elegant and impressive element finds its location in the shower environment not as an accessory but as a real shower-head creating a perfect blade effect. The showerhead-waterfall works with all GRAFF thermostatic product ranges. Material: polished stainless steel

Wall-mounted cascade and rainfall shower-head: the distinctive characteristic is the ultra-slim profile and the delicate edges, which give the product more than a touch of elegance. The cascade creates a subtle and wellshaped blade of water. The rain effect is extremely rich. The wall-mounted cascade and rainfall shower-head can be used with all GRAFF thermostatic ranges. Material: polished stainless steel

Music can be easily uploaded using an i-Pod connected to a wall-mounted USB port, while the speakers are ceilinginstalled.

Disergio Pool by Marti Guixé

Pool introduces a new type of washbasin. Pool is square and metallic; it rejects the idea of the conventional washbasin found in standard bathrooms. It can be easily placed in outdoor areas, offices, studios, bars, public and private places, and any other setting. Thanks to its intrinsic qualities and its white color, it may also be placed in contemporary bathrooms. Pool is made of stainless steel lacquered in matt white epoxy powder. It has a particularly practical towel rail, which is nonconformist and playful: a giant spring made of high-quality waterproof teak wood. At last, a ruffled towel is no longer synonymous with untidiness, but is an expression of freedom and creativity. An example of how Martì Guixé is able to reinterpret and breath new life into everyday objects though a new perspective. There are also two teak shelves available, one for use as a soap dish shelf, and one to cover the washbasin. In 2011, Pool was awarded the Design Plus prize

Bissaza Modern from

geometric designs to classic motifs

NAVONE Collection designed by Paola Navone An eclectic and highly contemporary vision informs the collections signed by Paola Navone for the BISAZZA CONTEMPORARY CEMENT TILES line. For the first time, decorative cement tiles take on a completely modern look, thanks to the singular pairing of hexagonal and square geometric shapes that are imperfect and stylized, capable of imbuing each and every tile with bold personality. These playfully decorative motifs are available in a wide range of colors; “meeting freely, they create unique patterns, similar to rugs, bringing a novel look to almost any surface. The graceful irregularity of the figures lends an element of surprise to the collection, marking a significant turning point in interior decor.

For 2015 Bisazza debuts several innovations, including the BISAZZA CONTEMPORARY CEMENT TILES collection, a new line featuring a contemporary, sophisticated interpretation of traditional cement tiles typically used in the palaces and mansions of nobility and the privileged classes during the second half of the 1800s and early 1900s. The vast collection is designed to communicate the decorative style of the past and present through expressive artistic language that reveals the creative genius of each of the project designers: Paola Navone, Jaime Hayon, Carlo Dal Bianco, and Bisazza Design Studio. Made entirely by hand and available in two formats - 20x20cm square or 20x23cm hexagonal - each tile is unprecedented and unique. Attentive craftsmanship adds allure and personality to the collection, which features a rich palette of colors and the sumptuous wealth of contemporary and classic graphic motifs that lend a bold, modern expressive identity to the products. With CONTEMPORARY CEMENT TILES collection, Bisazza blends design value with the appeal of artisan craftsmanship and expands its product line for the interior decor of both private homes and trendy public venues, in keeping with the aesthetic code of the Bisazza brand and its previous collections.

FLAVIKER MATTER AS A CREATIVE VALUE Backstage, the new collection presented by Flaviker at Cersaie 2014, draws from contrasting inspirations based on the traditions and locations of industrial archaeology. Backstage derives from unconventional choices and the desire to experiment, combining paths and materials to arrive at extremely contemporary solutions. The coexistence of opposites often reveals a new way of looking at things: the varied graphic surfaces of terracotta

are reinterpreted with the contemporary appeal of concrete; ceramic materials are transformed into pure creativity, breaking away from minimalist rigour to play a key role in unique spaces. The rectified colored body porcelain tile collection is designed to meet the needs of professionals and homeowners. Four hybrid colors in various shades reflect an unexpected combination of clay and concrete on ceramic panels with various modular

dimensions, ideal for use on floors and walls. The surfaces come in 2 versions – satin and a textured finish designed specifically for exterior use. The range of decorative inserts, including original 8.5x8.5 cm hexagons, mark a shift away from the classic rectangularity of ceramic tiles to allow for utterly new compositional layouts. Backstage from Flaviker can be used to create surprising new tiling solutions, ideal for a range of architectural contexts

including private spaces and unusual applications. It displays a skilful interplay of contrasts between elements and materials and coordinates with the main Flaviker collections. The DAKOTA collection is the new ceramic frontier from Flaviker, inspired by the North American landscape at the time when men were colonizing the great open spaces using materials provided by the land itself. DAKOTA is a new interpretation of wood-effect porcelain with aesthetic qualities that are enhanced by signs of ageing and wear. The collection is inspired by planks made of alder, a timber that is widely used in construction and interior finishing and displays natural imperfections caused by ageing such as scratches, stains and tiny holes made by woodworm. Powerfully realistic, the DAKOTA collection reproduces the wood defects as the most distinctive elements of the

ceramic surface. The product’s vintage look is in full accordance with the latest interior design trends, particularly given the choice of four sophisticated colors and the sizes that include not only 80 cm and 120 cm strips but also the visually striking 40x170 cm and 20x170 cm ceramic slats. Flaviker large-format tiles are produced using Auto-Leveling technology. A very small degree of convexity guarantees maximum bonding to the substrate after installation as the tiles self-level under their own weight, ensuring perfect flatness even in the case of dry-set installation. With a strong focus on sustainable building, exemplified by DAKOTA and its 40% content of recycled material, Flaviker is committed to meeting the requirements of the LEED international rating system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which promotes the design of buildings with a low environmental impact.

Decor and Elements Design by Carlo Dal Bianco

DECOR The 20x20x4 mm chips originally from the Tanticolori and Aurore collection enable Carlo Dal Bianco to contemplate large surfaces, made more dynamic by the arrangement of different colours and surfaces, with lightness and verve. The reduced thickness of the mosaic makes it possible to decorate curved surfaces to soften interiors in both public and private spaces.

DOUBLE CHAIN

Inspired by the Golden Age of the 1960s, by the silk blouses of the women who strolled in the Capri of Jacqueline Kennedy and Valentino, Double Chain is formed by the intersection of vertical and horizontal lines and circular shapes arranged on different intersecting planes. Each overlap generates a shadow

The decoration covers a 1,308x2,943 mm module that can be repeated horizontally, consisting of 4x9 sheets measuring 327x327 mm.

SOUNDWAVE It’s a vibration, a musical wave, a sequence of light and dark lines inspired by the visualization of the sound waves of electronic music. There are chips in two colours on a module formed by 2 sheets.

trousseaus of yesteryear that we continue to cherish. This typical pattern creates the lacy effect of crocheted cotton: in using mosaic as a medium, it becomes a light, ton-sur-ton decoration formed by large and classic roses and leaves that are repeated lengthwise. Two decorations narrate the ancient art of lacquer and mother-of-pearl typical of master craftsmen of the Han dynasty (II century B.C.) and

the entire Ming dynasty (XVII century A.D.). Dal Bianco’s creations emphasise the aesthetic potential of the chips from the Concerto and Perle collections. The plasticity and opacity of the Concerto chips and the mother-of-pearl lustre of the Perle chips bring these surfaces to life: colour is not merely a background, but rather acquires character and expressiveness.

Vetrina is the collection that enables the individual to experience his or her only penchant for design on any size surface to create a “high definition embodiment of an idea, an image or a photograph. Creativity has no limits: composing a mosaic is like drawing with coloured pencils on a blank sheet of paper. Carlo Dal Bianco embraces this peculiarity and creates two decorations marked by spectacular chromatic intensity.

INLAY A decorating project that investigates and interprets the ancient art of engraving mother-of-pearl, especially during the Yuan period of the XIV century. In high quality objects, but also in splendid screens, there was always a stark contrast between the mother-ofpearl and the background, which was often black. The decoration stretches over four framed panels - A, B, C and

The background is a mixture of black and very dark green chips from the Concerto series that contrasts with the Perle chips in a selection of light hues similar to the natural colour of mother-of-pearl. The sky is interrupted by wisps of clouds; all four panels depict oriental-style trees along the seashore amidst the flowers in a large meadow. Each panel consists of 4x9 sheets.

ELEMENTS The Elements collection is designed as a system of decorative friezes based on a 23x23 mm grid on which modular decor can be composed using 23x23, 23x48 and 48x48 mm chips with an 8 mm thickness. Each element is created inside a sheet of four friezes, so that the entire sheet of same decorative motif of the frieze can be used to

decorate the whole wall. The system consists of seven layouts proposed in different colour variations with chips from the Divetro and Onde collections, which take full advantage of the potential of glass, creating original combinations and lovely chromatic nuances.

LINK This layout of 23x48x8, 23x48x8 and 48x48x8 mm chips is a frieze designed by combining three formats in various hues, including gold. The elements are not arranged regularly within the frieze, giving the entire sheet a random appearance.

QUARTET This layout of 23x23x8 mm chips is a sequence of fours, consisting of three chips in four colour tones that are repeated three times.

Whether it was the Beatles or the Stones, the VW Beetle or the Ford Capri, Pucci or Yamamoto, the 1970s were full of sharp contrasts where style was concerned. Fashionlovers worldwide agreed on just one thing: never leave home without Bordeaux-red leather accessories sporting the horseshoe motif. Today Aigner is internationally reknowned as a modern classical brand. Since then a great deal has changed in the fashion world, also at Aigner. What remains is the horseshoe logo and the firm statement in favour of luxury and love of the product. Today Aigner is one of the most well-known German luxury and lifestyle brands. Whether it's Jakarta, Seoul, Taiwan, Hong Kong or

Dubai – the Fashion and Leather Collections from Munich are in great demand at all of the world's top locations. And here's how it all began. During the 1930s, Hungarian-born Etienne Aigner had his first successes as a handbag designer at the Haute Couture shows in Paris. This was followed in the 1950s by the presentation of his own collection in New York, when the typical horseshoe-shaped 'A' logo was first used. This marked the start of a success story that is still continuing today. From New York, events led on to Munich, where Aigner advanced to become a cult brand during the 60s and 70s. The horseshoe soon

Since 2004 Aigner has been showing its latest, exclusive fashion and leather collections twice a year at the Milan Fashion Week. The tailoring and elegance of the collections appeal to self-assured women who define their taste in fashion independently of any short-lived fashion trends. Again and again the collections reinterpret Aigner’s typical style features. In 2010 Aigner launched its Heritage Collection – a series of exclusive and timeless accessories in the company’s typical shade of Chianti-red that in future is to become an integral part of the company’s product line. Art Director Christian Beck (Head of Design Leather & Accessories) drew the inspiration for this from some of the old Aigner classics.

became far more than just a decorative symbol – it expressed the whole feel of life at that time. Despite the sense of a new beginning and the rapid developments in the years that followed, Aigner remained true to its basic principles and relied on values that are of constant and lasting relevance. The best example of this is the unmistakable saddlebag - a tribute to traditional leather- and saddlework. The fact that this model keeps on reappearing even in the very latest collections reveals its sheer timelessness. Aigner goes fashion: in 1990 the first Women's- & Menswear Collection appeared on the market. Licences were issued for watches, jewellery and spectacles.

Etienne Aigner

Aigner is available all over the world in 105 franchise shops and 450 sales outlets. Everything that Etienne Aigner built up – the work of a lifetime – has been in the capable hands of senior executive Sibylle Schön since 2008. Today it has become a global brand that is represented in 47 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well is in duty-free shops from Munich to Shanghai.

An Interview with

For men, what is the must-have accessory this season?

Christian Beck,

This season, the must have model for men is the Prato. This new Icon bag is trendy, functional and essential.

Head of Design, Aigner

What should we expect from you and Aigner for SS15? Christian Alexander Beck learned classic tailoring as a first step in his career. After graduating with a fashion design degree, he at a young age started working for renowned fashion brands such as Burberry and JOOP! where he gained valuable first experiences. In 2006 Christian Beck moved on to work as an accessory designer for the German luxury label Goldpfeil.

2015 is a special year for us – we will be celebrating our 50 year anniversary and will be sure to do it in a manner that is befitting. Our SS15 collection will very special and I think it is the best collection I have ever created for Aigner.

In May 2008, Christian Beck became part of the leather lifestyle brand Aigner where he was responsible for leather goods. Two years later he was appointed Head of Leather & Accessories. In early 2012, he took over the entire creative responsibility as the Head of Design at Aigner.

In honour of our milestone, we are focusing on the concept of icons for the SS15 collection. Our infamous bags will become icons – eyecatching and timeless. Talk to us about the Heritage Leather range?

Christian, how would you describe the entire Aigner AW14-15 collection in one sentence? Our A&W collection is an ode to the fascination of craftsmanship and our eventful history. What was the inspiration behind the collection? Aigner bags showcase pure, timeless design. We are renowned for our love of natural leather and our traditional superior manufacturing skills. The collection studio artigiano celebrates this Aigner strength. A quick look at this collection induces thoughts of fine leather and delicate craftsmanship. Your favourite piece from the RTW collection? I love the oversized look which you can see in our latest campaign which includes a long checkered skirt and a clean black blouse. Why should a woman carry an Aigner handbag? Aigner is a statement, it shows a sense of purpose and liberty, bags are a means of expression and Aigner expresses a sense of confidence and elegance. What is your ‘IT’ bag for AW14/1/5? This is definitely our Cybill bag. Cybill is a formula for success. It is an Aigner style icon produced with craftsmanship. Each season we allow this bag to evolve and take on new meaning and the success story of this model is not over …

We always have a deep bond with our history and are proud of our considerable museum. Looking through the archives, I often take design ideas and reinterpret them in a new, unique way. And of course we are attending the art of craftsmanship. Every Aigner collection has some products that are “Heritage” and focus on our brand DNA and history; we like to give these pieces new life in a new era. What does the brand stand for and mean to you personally? Aigner has been my creative home since 2008 and I am completely loyal and enamoured with

this fascinating brand. This label has a lot more to give and it will be an honour for me to grow with Aigner over the following years.

How would you describe the Aigner Man/Woman? The Aigner man and woman is a fashionista with character and a sense of timeless design. They appreciate quality, history and tend to have an air of confidence.

What makes Aigner unique when compared to other luxury brands available on the market today? We are an international well known German lifestyle and luxury brand that have 50 years of history and a strong background, we have a timeless style, we have quality. Today there are countless brands making bags but these don’t compare. Wearing Aigner is a kind of connoisseurship.

Describe the relationship between Aigner and its Middle Eastern clients. The Middle East is a fascinating market for Aigner. Our clients in the Middle East have really fallen for our talismanic horseshoe logo. They are extremely fashion forward and very up to date regarding fashion trends and new colours. What’s in the pipeline for Aigner? In this region a lot of things are planned: We will take part at the Iconic Bags Exhibition in Doha at the beginning of 2015. We will also be opening new shops in Oman Muscat/ Avenues Mall, YAS Mall in Abu Dhabi and Kuwait /360° Mall. And of course there are a lot of preparations regarding our jubilee. We are doing the campaign SS15 with an internationally known model and we are preparing a great Aigner anniversary booklet with personal client stories (of course we have added some clients from the Middle East too). Everything was with a contemporary design, which earned the project the prestigious Italian award Sistema d’autore METRA 2011, in the innovative technologies category. The same sensitivity is found in the making of footwear which is created with only the best and finest natural materials. This continuous development is mostly the work of Andrea and Rosa’s first son, Giuseppe, who joined the family company when he was very young. Giuseppe Santoni was still a child when his father Andrea established the Santoni brand with his vision to refine the cultural heritage of craftsmanship and Italian excellence. As a young boy, Giuseppe spent his time after school in his father’s work shop learning how to work with leathers and how to construct the perfect shoe. Following his school years, Giuseppe began to travel the world in order to manage the brand’s international expansion. He successfully opened new markets such as Japan, China, Northern Europe and Russia for what was destined to become one of the top names in Italian luxury products. For the past several seasons, we have been incessantly featuring products from Santoni, so it was only natural to have a Q&A with the CEO, and entrepreneurial visionary behind the Italian luxury brand. What is the uniqueness of the Santoni brand and its craftsmanship?

I have to say that what is unique about Santoni is the combination of the highest quality and a distinctive and contemporary design. Were-design the classic, revisiting it in a modern way, so we can offer true masterpieces still made by hand with a very strong identity and timeless elegance. If we go in depth in our craftsmanship, you will find many elements of uniqueness. The most outstanding one is the way we color our shoes: every final nuance is always the result of several layers of colors we apply on the leather according to a technique called Velatura. Our craftsmen start from the white leather and then they paint it by using a wool rag and then a brush. Every shoe requires several steps to be completely colored, and at the end it is unique. What influenced the company to investso much time on training the new apprentices/artisans on the job and improving their skills? At a certain point we realized we were growingvery fast, and we had to make a decision: Either we continue to produce by hand according to our tradition, or we completely change our approach. We decided to remain loyal to our philosophy of producing everything in house with the highest quality, and so we had to face the problem of recruiting new young people transmitting our knowledge to them. The training process of shoemaking is very long and requires time, patience and passion. The trainees would have to work closely with the most experienced artisans and day by day, they would learn the craft.

190

issue 31

November 2014 - January 2015

This is the only way we could preserve our savoir-faire. What are the key criteria that will motivate the brand to further invest in training the existing resources under the experienced craftsmen? There is a sort of natural selection with the new employees. You may believe that artisanal shoemaking is just a mechanical hand work, but it’s not true at all. It’s a matter of hands, brain, and heart. You need so much passion to do this kind of job in an excellent way. This is what we call the philosophy of quality. Only those who are ready to work in this way can remain with us, all the others will give up. Tell us some fun facts about the atmosphere in the headquarters and particularly between the craftsmen and the apprentices. If you come to our factory, you see thousands of people working in their respective department in a very “personal” way: They are free to use their tools, for example, and they are extremely protective of them. Two cutters or two brushes can be regular objects for some, but for our craftsmen they hold a great value. In Santoni, they feel like they have a mission in common, each of them knows he/she is contributing to the final result, so this harbors a sense of pride and motivation. When our experienced craftsmen talk to the young ones, they try to teach them first of all the philosophy of quality and the difference between a good product and an excellent product. In Santoni details really make the difference.

It is known as both a sport and water sport hub of Europe, and

its proximity to the fashion, design and shopping city Milan (two hours by car) and the cultural Verona, makes Lake Garda a top destination. The “Villa Eden – Gardone” resort is located on the south-western coast of the lake, and sits just above Gardone Riviera. Since the end of the 19th century, the lakeside resort has been one of the most exclusive in Italy and is today still known for its elegance and exclusivity, filled with history and charm. The seven villas were designed by a team of distinguished

and internationally recognized architects: David Chipperfield, Richard Meier and Matteo Thun, resulting in properties that exude nothing but excellence and exceptionality, using of course only the finest materials and unrivalled quality. Each was designed as an individual piece of art, a guarantee of exclusivity and luxury. Villa Eden was conceptualized not to become a uniform residential area, but rather a homogeneous project with unique properties uniting to form a serviced complex like no other.
