The Arts in Delta
Discovering Delta’s
vibrant art scene
T
o say “The arts are everywhere in Delta” would be an understatement. Across all communities, the arts scene continues to expand in new directions, marked by the spring opening of the North Delta Recreation Centre which is now home to North Delta Potters’ Guild and Watershed Ar tworks Society. Delta’s growing interest in creative expression is reflected in the growing number of well-attended events that draw visitors from across the Lower Mainland, and the following four groups reflect the diversity and excitement that our communities continue to offer. Delta Potters Guild “We are thrilled that the expansion of the recreation centre includes a dedicated space for our pottery studio,” notes North Delta Potters Guild president Bev Mason who appreciates the consultative process that took place between planners and the Guild’s executive. The Guild provides members with a shared studio space, access to resources, materials and classes. After almost 10 months of closure during construction, their impressive studio space, which opened its doors in April, features a range of new and used studio equipment, including kilns, pottery wheels and shelving. These significant investments have helped attract many new members this spring. There were many logistics and safety factors to consider, including placement of kilns, the spray booth and ventilation systems. Their 25 plus members enjoy 24-hour access to the secured studio and many come in weekly or daily to pursue their passion. Several members are also involved with The Watershed Artworks Society.
North Delta Potters Guild
Watershed Artworks Society Gallery Store
The Guild began in 2005 with the help of the Delta Arts Council, led by a small group of North Delta Potters who used one small room in the old firehall building. They eventually moved to ArtSpace and created and furnished a pottery studio. The Council was invaluable in offering their support and funding at the time, even in the face of increased reductions in provincial funding for arts councils across BC. Like many art
organizations, increased rents, insurance and other expenses presented great challenges. The Guild is involved with several community events, including Delta Studio Stomp and Deck the Halls Artisan Market, and offer pottery classes to adults and children through Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture. They also regularly donate to local fundraisers and hold two annual FALL 2016

Catherine Sheppard, - Peacock Study South Delta Artists Guild Being a hub of family activity, the new location brings a lot of foot traffic to the store. Watershed is involved with the Tour de Delta where they’ve hosted “The Finish Line” an upscale beer and wine garden for past four years, specially decorating the venue for guests. Key annual events include Delta’s Luminary Festival, Delta Studio Stomp, and Deck the Halls Artisan Market. Admission to this event is either a food or cash donation to the Delta Assist Christmas Hamper program. “The annual Luminary Festival really gives our artists a chance to shine,” notes member June Bergen-Holt. Past displays have included illuminated water features, dress forms, hand-painted umbrellas, lanterns and more. This spring, their “Whole Lotta Art” artisan market was held in conjunction with the N Delta Farmers Market. A whole lot of good food & fine art! Early members were originally part of the Delta Arts Council, who at one time operated three gift shops across Delta. When gaming grants were reduced in 2011, they were unable to keep their storefronts open. Gallery artists decided to explore alternative options. With just under 20 artists at the time, their group banded together with a new mission to form a cooperative style non-profit group and continue to run a shop. Today, Watershed’s membership has grown considerably due to the efforts and vision of

Members’ work is on exhibit at the office of local MLA Scott Hamilton. Artists interested in becoming members are encouraged to get in touch. Delta Potters Association Located at the South Delta Rec Centre is a diverse group of over 80 members which operates as a not-for-profit cooperative. They are committed to helping members develop skills while experiencing the joy of pottery making through sharing and learning. Their creations are both functional and artistic, and their two annual public sales held in November and May are much-anticipated events. The Association owns all their own equipment and members maintain and run the studio without any external support. As a cooperative, members are expected to volunteer their time throughout the year to help with any number of tasks, including glaze mixing, pottery sales, firing kilns or clean up. Members can sell their pottery in any or all studio sales held throughout the year and enjoy access to the studio seven
days per week, except during class times. The group potting year membership runs Sept 1 to August 31, and they offer a range of classes for members, from beginner to advanced, including hand-building classes. One of the group’s mandates is to develop public awareness of pottery and ceramics through sponsorship of displays and lectures, and publicizing achievements of their members. With this in mind, Delta Potters showcases one member’s work each month at the Tsawwassen Public Library, and also host a volunteer-run program for Kin Village six times during the year. Seniors enrolled in their day program can come to the studio for two-hour sessions and learn from members. Participants include those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or dealing with stroke recovery. They also host children’s clay day at the Tsawwassen mall during Spring break. Moreover, Association members donate approximately 125 soup bowls annually for the fund-raising gala put on each June by the Loving Spoonful Society, an organization helping individuals living with advanced HIV/ AIDS in the greater Vancouver area, and also donates pots to the Potters for Hospice.

What began in 1975 with a small group of dedicated artists has today grown to over 100 members. Mayor Lois Jackson officially opened the current location in 2000, marking a great achievement for those early Guild members who campaigned for years to obtain a dedicated gallery space. Guild members enjoy many benefits. Monthly meetings feature professional art demonstrations, and the gallery’s spacious and well-equipped studio workroom is open every day, offering members a dedicated area to work independently or join others for drop-in sessions. The Guild’s popular Monday morning life drawing sessions, open to the public, feature live models and attract artists from across the Lower Mainland. In addition to showing work in their inviting gallery space, there are opportunities to display art in select venues, including Delta Town & Country Inn, Delta Hospital, Ladner
Medical Centre and others. Members can also book the gallery for private or semiprivate shows, take advantage of special prices on workshops, and benefit from ongoing social media promotion. Their annual Oil & Water Juried Art Competition, featuring the best work of BC artists, just celebrated its 13th year. This prestigious competition and exhibit is a highlight for Delta residents and tourists alike, and numerous prizes are donated from local businesses and private sponsors. Last year’s “All About Delta” special exhibit featured members’ Delta-inspired artworks and local dignitaries and the public were invited to vote on their favourites works. Images of the eight winning entries were used to create gift card sets now available for sale at the gallery. The Guild also collaborates with Delta Photo Club to host a joint exhibit in which Guild members interpret photography through visual art. The Guild regularly donates to worthy causes including Delta Assist and the food bank and offers art bursaries to three South Delta High Schools. Anyone interested in joining the Guild is warmly encouraged to come to a monthly meeting to learn more. These are just four great organisations to get to know and get involved with to develop your artistic streak but there are many more. So get creative this Fall!

Samonte, “but I admit it’s not for me.” People who are “hitters” just get it. Winning “April Owners of the Month” last year was a proud accomplishment for Samonte who doesn’t claim to have a fitness background but has always focused on her health. Discouraged by the many workouts she’d tried in the past but never stuck with, she decided to respond to a Facebook ad to come in for a trial workout a few years ago and hasn’t looked back. “The positive and supportive atmosphere was such a good fit with my personality,” she recalls. It wasn’t long before she set up an appointment to learn more about franchise opportunities and shared her business idea with her sister-in-law Tina. While many gyms intimidate members with complicated equipment and high pressure training programs, 30 Minute Hit gives women access to an easy-to-follow circuit and on-site trainers included in the fee. Regardless of fitness level or prior workout experience, women are welcomed, encouraged and motivated to give it a try. elta Community Music School (DCMS), a non-profit society which has called the historic McKee House in Ladner Village home since 2010, joins over 15 community music schools across BC whose mandate is to work closely with their communities. Stephen Robb, current chair of the BC Association of Community Schools and Director of Music at DCMS since 1998,
notes that while private non-profit schools may run different programs, they let the community shape the direction of each school’s curriculum, responding to the needs of families and schools. Robb, who is also Artistic Director of Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra since 2003, teaches clarinet, saxophone, piano and jazz studies and was a past board member at the Delta Arts Council.
Offering such a variety of musical opportunities makes DCMS unique. There are 18- 20 faculty who teach a range of orchestral instruments, including guitar, violin, piano and cello, as well as voice lessons. DCMS teachers go above and beyond, organizing jazz festivals, musician boot camps, musical theatre productions and more. About 250 private students pass through on a regular basis, from beginners to emerging professionals. In addition to their class programs, including band and jazz ensemble, students can take private lessons or learn in a group setting with highly-qualified faculty whose goal is to develop a lifelong appreciation of music. “We try to create community involvement through our outreach initiatives and the band programs we run at many private and elementary schools.” DCMS regularly helps local schools get started with their own programs, assisting with curriculum and teaching, and their outreach programs have expanded a lot over the past 15 years. Stephen Robb, current chair of the BC Association of Community Schools and Director of Music at DCMS since 1998 programs. “Often schools will grow, hire their own teachers and become able to run their own programs at a certain point, with enough students and finances,” explains Robb. The roots of today’s Delta Community School, founded in 1983, trace back to the original Ladner youth orchestra which practiced in South Delta in the 70s. In the early 80s, the group expanded and began to think about creating a music school. Originally called the Delta Conservatory of Music, it became the Delta Institute of the Arts (DIA) where it ran a variety of arts programs out of studios on Bridge Street for many years. By the end of 1994, DIA became known as Delta Community Music School. When an opportunity became available to find a new use for the McKee House, a late Victorian-era residence once used by the McKee
Seniors Society, the school’s members and board decided to relocate. Robb’s vision is to see Ladner as not only a destination for music but for all the arts, where residents and visitors celebrate the joy of creative expression. South Delta Jazz Festival, a music school project, features performances, teaching and workshops. Concerts and jam sessions are held at Petra’s in Tsawwassen. They also make use of nearby church spaces including Ladner United and All Saints in Ladner. Lady Bug’z Lifestyle Assistant Ltd.
Home care services
with a heart
W
hile the idea of having a lifestyle assistant might seem out of reach to many, Delta residents have a surprisingly affordable option right here in the community. “We are in the business of providing exceptional service and value for anyone that needs assistance with daily tasks,” explains Lady Bug’z President Anna Erickson. And while Lady Bug’z, now celebrating its fourth year in business, provides much-needed services to seniors, staff also work with other clients including new moms and busy professionals seeking personal concierge services, as well as recovering patients returning from hospital. “We basically take over the everyday things they would be doing, such as cleaning, shopping or preparing meals which helps reduce anxiety,” Erickson notes. Their range of lifestyle services for seniors are as diverse as the clients they serve, including companionship, care aide, hospital services, driving, housekeeping and organizing to name a few. “We treat our clients like they’re our own
grandmas and grandpas,” explains Erickson whose own tight family-oriented business is a reflection of the values the business embraces. While she and her husband Mike own Lady Bug’z, her sister works in the business in Delta and her cousins, who are trained LPNs, RNs and care aides, oversee Lady Bug’z in the Abbotsford area and take care of the Lower Mainland. “It’s so great to have a network of family support behind the business,” she adds. The owners’ passion for helping also extends to the community where they volunteer with Food on the Corner, a multi-denominational Christian organization that feeds the hungry and homeless. Erickson’s greatest reward is the relationships she’s developed with clients and their families. Their goal is to make sure seniors can live independently and safely in their homes and get the best care they deserve. The team strives to be flexible and goes above and beyond what is expected, guided by patience, compassion and loyalty. For example, if a client needs help dressing and taking medications, their staff will likely also prepare a beautiful breakfast, stay for a

cup of tea, and make sure every comfort is met. “We just do things differently,” explains Erickson who has worked with seniors for well over 10 years. “We are passionate about offering our clients personalized services at the best price. Everyone deserves the help they need. We will meet with families and work out a plan to meet their budget needs.” Often it’s the little things and time spent with staff that make a senior’s day extra special. This might include baking together, playing a game, reading or helping with meal preparation. Her past experience in the industry opened her eyes to ways senior lifestyle assistance could be improved. The company takes great care to match every client with a companion whose personality is compatible. “We put ourselves in their shoes and consider any physical challenges they might have too. Taking time and doing what’s necessary to deliver the best experience is important, even if that means going over the agreed upon time,” she adds. Patience is an important quality that all staff embrace. One

Dreamz Boardshop
Inspiring a new generation
of skateboarders in Delta
“Y
ou Live it, you love it, you breathe it” is the mantra of Street Dreamz Boardshop owner Chris Somerville who celebrates six years as a Delta entrepreneur. Embracing the skateboarding lifestyle as early as age 10, the shop owner quickly discovered a passion for pushing his limits that only those who skate can truly understand. By his teens, he was living every rider’s dream, landing a major sponsorship in 2000 from iconic franchise West 49 that was rapidly expanding across Canada. With a growing fan base and access to the industry’s most coveted products and brands, his career path was wide open. That all changed in 2003 when life

took a tragic turn for the young skater. A serious car crash put his dreams on hold, as he was faced with a long recovery that would leave him with physical mobility challenges. Somerville turned inward to determine the best direction for his life, trying to ignite his passion for something new. “Following the accident, I wanted to be independent, live on my own, and find employment” he explains. He made a practical decision to learn web development and graphic design, but upon graduation faced difficulties finding a job. Throughout his journey, his passion for the skateboarding lifestyle remained constant. He enrolled in a program offered through the Self Employment & Entrepreneur Development Society (SEEDS)
and developed a business plan for running a skateboard shop. In 2011, he opened on Scott Road in North Delta. “We were blown away when customers told us how happy they were to finally see a board shop in Delta” he recalls. Two years ago, he decided to relocate closer to the main North Delta skatepark to offer more convenience to skaters. Today, the shop draws clientele from across the Lower Mainland. Being 100% skater owned and operated sets the store apart from big box chains, as staff bring a passion and level of knowledge that is unparalleled. If the shop doesn’t carry a product, they will source it and arrange a special order. “We’re here for the community and they know it. We are about motivating
following their dreams. When he’s not working, you can find him with his two bulldogs Buster and Aveo,, the beloved store mascots, enjoying some richly-deserved downtime at Stanley Park.

They also sponsor riders from outside areas including North Van, Burnaby and Langley. They share videos, posts and photos from events with their social media fans. Key annual events include a Canada Day Jam at the North Delta Skatepark, a Halloween
skateboard jam, and a “JK All Day” Memorial Skate Jam in memory of Jamie Patrick Kehoe to help raise awareness about youth violence. Opening up a successful shop is Somerville’s own inspiring real-life story of never giving up. His determination is the expression of every skater’s never-say-die attitude. Since opening his doors, Somerville has been involved with the Rick Hansen Foundation, speaking to high school kids about the importance of inclusion and

Delta Hospital Auxiliary
The spirit of giving back
I
t’s often been said that one of the greatest gifts you can give is your time. The strength of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society can be attributed to the efforts of their 500 plus dedicated volunteers, several with over 25 years of service, who make a difference daily in the lives of patients and their families. “Giving back is one of the primary reasons most people volunteer,” notes President Robbi Schultes, who joined the Auxiliary in 2002. The Society estimates that the dollar value alone of volunteer time in 2015 marks a considerable financial donation of over $1 million, even if only calculated at minimum wage. Since the auxiliary began in 1969, it’s estimated that the Society has raised over $20 million for the hospital, a huge contribution to both the hospital and community of Delta as a whole. The Auxiliary serves a three-fold purpose, including providing care and comfort, their service component, raising
money for much-needed equipment and helping maintain good relations between hospital and communities it serves. They also run four volunteer-based business enterprises, the hospital Courtyard Café, Dogwood Gift Shop, Lifeline and the Auxiliary Thrift Store, recently awarded the Delta Optimist Reader’s Choice Award for Best Second Hand Store. The popular thrift store, run year-round by a team of hardworking volunteers, is a favourite destination for locals, and their collectable sales draw shoppers from across the Lower Mainland. “One of the reasons we receive such amazing donations to the store is that residents are mindful of where the money is going and the importance of supporting the hospital,” notes Schultes. Lifeline, a 24-hour electronic emergency response system, helps people remain in their homes and call for help to the Lifeline office located in Delta Hospital. The system currently helps about 400
Delta residents, including seniors and persons living with disabilities, to enjoy more independence and peace of mind. It’s the little things that count too, such as the efforts of the Auxiliary flower team who provide beautiful arrangements in the hospital’s public spaces. Their popular pet, music and recreation therapy programs also benefit patients and families. The Society and the Delta Hospital Foundation recently co-funded the renovation of an underused waiting room into a pre-admission clinic with private consult rooms and reception area, with the goal of providing a better patient experience. The waiting area overlooks the picturesque hospital garden and courtyard. Other recent accomplishments include funding a spiritual health practitioner position. Marilyn Chan provides spiritual support and comfort to patients and their families, as well as medical staff and volunteers.

The Auxiliary is active in co-funding the priority equipment list from Fraser Health, and are proud to announce they are well on their way to achieving their $2.4 million commitment for equipment in the new diagnostic expansion. They’ve also partnered with the Foundation to fund recent Delta Hospital equipment requests which total about $800,000. Other accomplishments include a new custom built bus for the residents of Delta View Manor. This past summer, the Auxiliary hired three interns whose efforts were focused on strengthening the Society’s marketing communications and researching the Auxiliary’s history in preparation for their 50th anniversary. Each year, the Auxiliary shows appreciation for public support and awards an impressive $11,000 in bursaries to six deserving students and two staff at Delta Hospital.

Bursary money helps students continue studies in the healthcare field and staff pursue clinical courses to strengthen their skills. Those selected to receive bursaries have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and passion for the healthcare field. Anyone interested in recommending an individual for their contributions, or putting forth their name for financial assistance to pursue further studies in healthcare, is encouraged to contact the Auxiliary office. Delta Town & Country Inn Tennis Club
A sweet spot for tennis &
building community spirit
“I
t’s all about location,” notes Diane Vass, Delta Town & Country Inn Tennis Club Manager whose club draws members from across the Lower Mainland in search of easily-accessible, quality indoor facilities during the September to June playing season. Close to the ferries, border and Metro Vancouver, Delta’s only indoor court located in the community’s iconic inn offers many advantages. During tennis tournaments, out of town guests have a place to “play and stay” as well as dine onsite at Meadows Restaurant. Members enjoy hotel amenities, including fitness centre, outdoor pool and volleyball court, pro shop services, and more. In fact, many members come in the summer and enjoy the use of the pool facilities during the day while hotel guests are out doing tourist activities. The club has recently hosted the Stanley Park Open, one of the biggest amateur tournaments in North America, as well as the Burnaby, Richmond, and Delta Opens, among others. “Our tennis club membership fees are very reasonable,” notes Vass. Many people are pleasantly surprised when they join. “Our philosophy is that we really want everyone to come out and play and enjoy the game,” she adds. Many of the community-oriented club’s over 250 active members have

The popular and fast-growing junior academy for ages 6-17 years taught by well-experienced professionals starts up this fall the week of September 6. All students are evaluated on-court and placed by their pros in groups according to age and ability. In addition to lessons, weekly social activities are an important part of the club, and these include mixed doubles games, ladies “skills and drills” and more. Visit their website www.deltainn.com, for up-to-date events. This year she’ll be playing in the American Masters Cup as part of the Americas Masters Games 2016 lineup, to be held in Vancouver for the first time. “The Master’s Cup is considered the Olympics for amateur athletes,” explains Vass, “so it’s a real honour to play.” Delta Town & Country Tennis Club is open daily and weekends from 9am and encourages anyone interested in playing to get in touch. Granted, to the average real estate investor the above may not be anything new, but consider that the CRA is more likely to deem that you are obligated to pay GST on the entire value of the sale and not just the “fee” or “gain” of the assignment, and now you have a serious tax liability on hand. The harm to you is that you would essentially be paying GST on your deposit for the property and after numerous flips on a single property there exists the potential for double taxation. A recent court case Casa Blanca Homes Ltd. v. R. in 2013 directly addressed this issue, whereby Casa Blanca argued that they should not have to pay the GST on a recovery of their initial deposit, as it would not fall under the definition of a taxable supply under the Excise Tax Act but rather the

The Chai Company
tradition and Honouring sharing an authentic chai experience
T
ravel can be a life-changing experience and set us on a new course. For Chris Merry, the founder of The Chai Company, that moment happened during a hiking expedition in the Himalayas where he met a friendly group of Sherpas who offered him his first cup of chai tea and shared their unique recipe which originated from the Karakoram region in Pakistan. Upon his return to Canada, he recreated the chai drink on a stove top and gave bottles to family and friends who delighted in the exotic aromas and tastes. Seeing how well received the chai was, Chris decided to start up his own brewery with a vision to share this special beverage with the rest of the world. Today, the company’s chai tea is handcrafted in a micro-brewing facility, reflecting the virtues of tradition, purity, balance, patience and focus. The careful, thoughtful process is aligned with the principles of the Slow Food movement, and every batch of chai contains spices that have steeped for 6 to 8 hours. “Our products are unique because we make chai the traditional way by steeping whole spices in brewed tea. To speak to purity, we avoid the use of flavourings, extracts, manufactured food additives, or just about any “ingredient” that you might think twice about consuming on its own. Patience and focus is what allows our brew masters to create this wonderfully balanced chai.” explains Sales & Marketing Director Catherine Wong. With a simple ingredients list comprising of whole spices, organic tea, real cane sugar and purified BC mountain water – how could you go wrong? lattes, chocolate chai lattes, chai-nog lattes and more. The company’s mantra to strive for authenticity in all they do is reflected in their environmentally-friendly choices. From product production to delivery, they minimize their impact in many ways. Because chai is a concentrated beverage, there is less packaging, reduced storage and lower consumer waste. Moreover, less transportation is needed, thereby reducing
vehicle pollution. Organic tealeaves and spice waste is used by local farmers as compost. They also partner with local company Earth’s Own to package their products using renewable paperboard materials. Can chai make the world a better place? “We think so!” says Merry. Today, there is a growing awareness of how our food choices impact not only our communities but the world. FALL 2016

A decision to purchase a Chai Company product is also a decision to support ethical sourcing. Where possible, the company sources ingredients directly from farmers and farmer based co-ops which ensures equitable pricing for crops. Importantly, this practice enables individuals working in developing countries to benefit from fair prices, engage in direct trade and have
better control over the development of their communities. Sipping the perfect cup of chai is an experience that transcends taste itself, and offers benefits for the mind, body and soul. Superior Fish Market & Specialty Foods

elebrating over 20 years in Ladner Village, Superior Fish Market attracts customers from around the corner and across the Lower Mainland who are hooked on their fresh products. From the get-go, the store filled a niche that locals had been looking for, providing a community-focused friendly place to find local seafood. From their family boats to your kitchen table, their shortened supply chain means customers can enjoy a truly superior product. Ladner Village shares a rich fishing heritage with the nearby community of Steveston. Those who live on the river know that “If it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood,” explains co-owner Kari Colhoun whose grandfather, father, cousins and brothers have fished the Pacific coast for several generations. Debbie Wilson, Kari’s first cousin and fellow business partner, started the original storefront on River Road in Ladner in 1981 before expanding to other areas including the former Surrey
Public Market and Bridgepoint Market Richmond where the River Rock Casino Resort now stands. At age 14, Kari got an early start in the business, and was officially brought in to help manage the current Ladner location in Trennant Park Square. “We only bring in wild fish, nothing farmed, so customers know exactly what they’re getting and don’t need to be concerned about labelling,” explains Colhoun. The majority
of their fresh and frozen seafood items are caught in North American waters, some of the most pristine in the world. Their knowledgeable staff strive to give customers an optimal

experience by sharing cooking tips and recipes to best bring out the flavours of their products. Get inspired by visiting the recipe page link on their website where you’ll find tips for cooking halibut cheeks and oysters, creating a salmon marinade, or preparing fish tacos. If you miss a Ladner Village Market day, you will likely find some of your favourite suppliers’ products at their store. Look for items from Thai Princess, Mitchell’s Soups, Ella’s Burgers, Chef Enrik, Granola King, Stapleton Sausages and Untamed Feast Mushrooms. Find a complete list of their market vendors’ products on their website. Their recent expansion into organic meats and gourmet specialty items marks an innovative business direction. “Our customers don’t have to drive to Vancouver to find items such as free-run organic chicken, ostrich meat or quail eggs. Other foods include grass-fed beef from Westham Island, bison, duck sausage with blueberries and kangaroo. Also find organic chicken from Thomas Reid farms and specialty turkey from JD Farms. To complete meal planning,
visitors will also find spices, soups, sauces and salad dressings. Although fish is widely considered a heart-healthy choice, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease plus many types of cancer, many of us still reach for other “meats” when we’re planning meals. Staff encourage those who shy away from choosing fish to come by with an open mind and discover how freshness is the key to that flaky, delicately delicious taste that so many enjoy. If your summer plans include travel, be sure to inquire about their seafood packing service!

Chand’s Restaurant
Sharing the flavours and
aromas of Fijian-style cuisine
Y
ou don’t have to leave the neighbourhood to take your taste buds on a culinary journey. Since 2012, Chands Restaurant on Scott Road in North Delta has been serving up Fijian-style versions of Chinese and Indian dishes to loyal customers who come to enjoy the savoury dishes prepared by trained chef and Fijian owner Veenal Chand. Running a restaurant comes naturally to Chand whose family has owned and operated a popular restaurant in Fiji since the early 90s. Chand’s late father founded the business, and since then their whole family has been involved, with the owner’s mother, brother and sisters looking after business on the tropical Pacific island chain. Fijian cuisine is relatively unknown to many who live in the Lower Mainland, but this is changing as the Fijian population grows. There are an estimated 8,000 Fijians who call British Columbia home, many of whom are descendants of Indian immigrants whose families emigrated to Canada in the 1980s. Historically, beginning around 1879, many Indians migrated to Fiji and worked as labourers in the sugarcane industry, and this fusion of cultures led to new culinary explorations. Eventually, a new kind of “Fijian-Indo” cooking evolved which so many enjoy today. “Given the huge Fiji population in Vancouver and Surrey, it made sense for us to open a Fijian restaurant in this area,” notes Chand. For Chand and his wife Irene, the restaurant enables them to make a positive impact in the community while doing something they truly love. Moreover, being entrepreneurs gives them additional freedom and flexibility to keep up with the demands of family life.
Travel to a market in Fiji and you’ll discover an abundance of fresh seafood including fish, shellfish, sea urchin and octopus from the South Pacific, as well as staple produce items harvested from the archipelago, including taro, bananas, coconuts, leafy vegetables and sweet potatoes, along with pungent spices. Creative combination of flavours, aromas and texture make Fijian food deliver unexpected complexity and balance. Though a relatively small stretch of land, the diverse Fijian terrain features lush rainforest as well as drier micro-climates, creating a wide yield of food products. While their patrons are mainly from the Fijian community, many other locals who are open to trying something new have recently discovered the cuisine. “Our regular customers know our menu well and know exactly what to order without even looking at the menu,” notes Chand whose popular Fijianinspired Chinese and Indian dishes, including stews, curries and soups, have earned him a loyal following. The owner recommends new guests try their special fried rice, chow mein, chop suey and range of savoury curries, including chicken, lamb, goat, duck and fish. Appetizers include fried cassava, papadams and fried fish. Popular soups include chicken sweet corn and vegetable long soup. “The whole family has been such an inspiration to me,” explains Chand, “and without their blessing and support, our business wouldn’t be here today.” Chand thanks his wife, Irene, for her ongoing strength, guidance and support. Chands serves lunch and dinner six days a week. Pick up and delivery service is available and Chands also caters for your special events.
