Vocation Questions Question 1: What is the difference between art and design in your opinion, and what do you like more and why?
For me, art is more like making a drawing or coming up with something weird or creative and putting it on paper or sculpting it. It’s meant to look beautiful and has many different styles. Design on the other hand is more like art for something, rather than art about something. Lots of times designers are called in instead of typical artists to do work for companies or corporations. They can do their building, their logo; basically anything for them that’s considered stylish. For me, I’d rather be a designer because it’s not about so much coming up with something off the top of my head, and I can make things that relate to and give the feel of who I’m working for. I would rather do art for somebody rather than just for myself.
Question 2: If you could do anything with design, and if it payed you well enough, what would you do and why?
If I could design something for a living, it would be either designing hockey jerseys or hockey sticks. I’ve always liked the look of hockey jerseys more than any other sport jerseys, and the designs on the sticks are really cool to me. One of my favorite things to do on NHL video games is to make the jerseys for custom teams. So, if I could design the jerseys for NHL teams, or maybe local teams, I would be honored to do it.
D-School Working with a real person was a little bit nerve racking, but it wasn’t too
bad. I was more interested on the new ideas for the thing we gave them rather than the critiques, but that might just be me. It was a little bit awkward to give them something unfinished though. It kind of made me feel bad that it wasn’t good enough or not enough time was put into it, but in the end I knew they would understand. The pace for me was probably the worst part. For me, I like more than enough time to work so I don’t get flustered or pressured. So, the biggest problem for me was coming up with the materials quickly to make my gift. Thankfully I was successful, but it made me scared nonetheless. What I would do over is survey the options/materials more so I wouldn’t be so worried to find what I need.
Objective:
For our first assignment, we were asked to make something useful for someone in our class to use in everyday life. Basically we were meant to do this realize that design is not necessarily the exact same as art, but that design is a lot of time for something, not necessarily about something. Also, this was for us to realise that it doesn’t take much to make something nice or useful.
Dot Line
Objective:
The point behind this assignment was to creatively express words in a visual way using simple tools and tactics to make a greater meaning of the word being expressed. To make an interesting take on a word and give meaning to it in your own way and that visualizes what comes to mind when you here that word. The way I would put gestalt is that it is using shapes and unorthodox things to portray something or some kind of conception. What we did is use dots and lines to give the meaning of a word. This led to people having different interpretations and opinions on our work, and whether we portrayed the word in the right sense. For me, in any art class really, I typically like to focus on the idea more than perfection. Obviously I don’t just scrap something together and throw it on the paper, but I’m fine with a little bit of messiness as long as the idea or the entire picture as a whole is good. I like to be that artist that makes things where you have to step back to truly see the big picture. This project though made me realize though that art is not always about advanced techniques. You can make something beautiful, especially if you use words like we did, without being a great artist. Simplicity is sometimes better is what I got from this. This is why it was sometimes hard for me to come up with something. I thought that my work would have to be perfect because of the limited resources we had. So it made me sit back and think simpler and not so big in order to come up with something good. One thing that could be changed though is the colors we could use or possibly different shapes. This could lead to even greater compositions in my opinion and might make it easier for people.
This isn’t so bad!

Text and Letter
Objective:
The goal of this project was to make a creative iteration of one of the words from the list we received. To me, this was meant to be a fun project where we could see what we could do with a word and what potential it has as a piece of art. We were to make our word into something we see it as and ame it into art. What I learned from this project is that how important fonts and texts are; like how they can show off or destroy a company’s advertisement etc. It showed me that this area is no laughing matter and th What I learned from this project is that how important fonts and texts are; like how they can show off or destroy a company’s advertisement etc. It showed me that this area is no laughing matter and that it is critical to many different things. Doing this by hand allowed me to see how fortunate we are to have computers and all of our technology that does the work for us. For example I used a sort of old English type of font for one of my works and I’d say it was the hardest of the four. The technique I would like to keep working on, or the one I liked the best, was the ones with ink or charcoal. It was hard, but the fact that the style of it I like the most is the reason why I would want to keep on working on it. I think that the ideas of my work were better than my execution. I got good feedback on my works about the idea and the look of them, but the thing that could have been improved was the execution and the size of lettering and son. I wouldn’t say that I’m unhappy with my execution, but in my opinion the idea came through more than it.
Ughhhhhh...

Object Iterations
Objectives:
For our object iterations, we were assigned to give different takes and styles on a certain object or animal. This meant doing a picture or piece of art that is meant to literally show off the object or something that creatively expresses it, or both at the same time. What I learned about my object, the red panda, is that they are a very unique kind of animal. I was not only able to get information about the habitat and the habits of red pandas, but the characteristics as well. I learned that red pandas are not the same as raccoons, even though they are very similar. I got to know the distinctions between raccoons and red pandas as well, as red pandas have smaller black stripes on their faces and that red pandas are very playful and not very dangerous. It was a little hard to specifically make a red panda instead of a raccoon, but with research, it made it a lot easier. The media that was most challenging for me was InDesign because it wasn’t exactly like photoshop. I had worked with photoshop in the past, but the shifting and scaling of the iterations was a little bit difficult. Placing them was a little bit different and difficult, but it all worked out in the end. I am very happy though that I got to learn somewhat about InDesign because I plan to use it in the future. What I learned in photoshop that I plan to use going forward is basically everything I already know. I learned just a few things, like how to make a easy vignette, but I hope to in the future learn more techniques. I was really happy to get back into photoshop again, as I forgot a good amount of things and techniques, but I hope to take the stuff I relearned in this class to never forget them the next time I have to use photoshop.
Almost there!

Data Visualization Objective:
For this one, the point here was the see how data impacts our society and can make for valid evidence on an argument or dilemma in the world. This was to make us see that even though data is not necessarily fact, but that it is extremely reliable and that in today’s society with all the technology we have, it is now very easy to access. The most important thing for me in the data visualization project was finding a way to incorporate video games into a poster, as well as showing the data I researched with it. I tried to have the man and women silhouettes looking at the TV with the GameCube in front of it. Also, I thought that the TV would act as a good text box, so you focus on it and gives you more of a sense of what the message is of my poster. To have people not focus on the TV so much though, I used bigger lettering for the percentages, but it didn’t exactly turn out as well as I planned and I made the tv a little too big. My favorite thing about this project was that I could be more free unlike the previous projects, so I could do mine on video games. In my sketches, I went a little overboard because of excitement, but I figured out a way to effectively make a video game poster in the end. Putting the TV and GameCube on it was kind of fun, as well as putting on the eSports logo.

Designer Presentation Objective:
The most important thing about this presentation was to explore more of the world and see that other people are doing the same type of stuff we do in class, but that they do this for a living. We were meant to look at one of these designers and give a slideshow on what type of artwork they do, what their art means, why they made what they did, and what type of style do they have and what message they send. We did this also to see how much designers have had an impact on our society and our everyday lives, mainly because we don’t typically know who designs all the logos etc. that we all know. The three designers I looked at were Deborah Sussman, Milton Glaser, and Chip Kidd. I chose Deborah Sussman mainly because she worked on the Olympics, and out of all three of them, I found that to be the coolest thing. The fact that she also worked on Disney World too was really interesting, and a lot of her different projects outmatched the other designers’ works to me. When presenting, I wasn’t too nervous but I didn’t really want to do it either. Because this was a little more chill and free lance, it made it easier for me to present it because it wasn’t a full on speech, which I’ve had before and that was WAY more nerve racking. I was a tiny bit nervous just because of how fast it was, but the note cards really helped. The presentation I liked the most was Jon’s presentation. His designer was really interesting and I really liked the art that he made. The fact that he was also from Switzerland and doing stuff in the US was cool too. The posters he designed were my favorite of his art and looked stunning for the time they were made, and with the process alongside that.
~Her biggest work, the 1986 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, was what really put her on the map. She was assigned to make the feel and look of the Olympics while incorporating it with the city of L.A.
~She has done a lot of things for California and the city of Los Angeles. These are some bags she has designed.
Finally! Oh wait...
~Deborah Sussman has also worked on Disney World, and has contributed the signs and guidance systems for it.
