Leiria is located on the coastal region of the center of Portugal and the sub region of the coastal forest pine. It is a historical town, bathed by the Lena and Lis rivers. The district has over 125 thousand habitants. It has a strong economic and business dynamism. Its leading sustainability lies in agricultural production (fruit, vegetable, wine, canned food, among others) and industries of ceramics, molds, glass, plastics, cement, wood, cutlery, and leather accessories (handbags and harnesses). The main monument is the medieval Castle of Leiria, symbol of the City’s history. Inside the imposing walls there are traces of the various stages of occupation: from a military fortress to the royal palace.

Batalha is a town situated in the center region and sub region of the costal forest. The town’s name means battle. It was founded by Portugal’s King Dom João I. At the same time, the Monastery of Santa da Vitória in Batalha, also known as Monastery of Batalha, was built, to pay homage to the Portuguese victory at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. Batalha has witnessed countless important historic moments, from the presence of the Romans to the decisive independence struggles which left the village with an unforgettable cultural heritage. The district of Batalha offers a great mountain landscape as well as an immense heritage of extreme beauty.

A typical fishing town, Nazaré is nowadays a busy summer resort, where side by side with the crowds of tourists, one still sees all over the streets of the town the fish-sellers, and the carapaus (horse mackerel) laid out to dry. The Sítio district, at the town’s highest point (accessible by a funicular), is without doubt the best viewpoint in the area. The Nazaré people’s connection with the sea is reflected in the local handicrafts, in particular the nets, buoys, baskets and traditional puppets dressed in the typical costumes of seven skirts, as well as in the cuisine, with its emphasis on fish and shellfish dishes, such as caldeiradas (fish caseroles), soups, açorda (purée of bread, herbs and garlic) and the dried horse mackerel. Nazaré is a charming fishing village with two beaches, the Nazaré Beach and Praia do Norte Beach which is well known for its huge waves and its great potential for surf and body board.

Alcobaça lies in the valleys of the Rivers Alcoa and Baça, which according to some authors is the origin of its name. It has also been suggested that it was the Arabic name of the place which was split to name the two rivers. Alcobaça owes its fame and development to the Monastery or Royal Abbey of Santa Maria, founded by the Order of Cistercians in 1153. Building began in 1178 on land donated by Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, to Friar Bernardo of Claraval, founder of the Order of Cistercians. The Monastery of Alcobaça is a very fine monument and is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The local cuisine and confectionery have been strongly influenced by the local Cistercian monasteries and convents. The main economic activities in Alcobaça are farming, more specifically fruit farming, tourism and the faience and glass crystal industries. The tertiary sector accounts for 49% of the active population, followed by the secondary sector with 31% and the primary with 19%.

Encircled by a ring of medieval walls and crowned by the Moorish castle rebuilt by D. Dinis, which is now a pousada, Óbidos is one of the most perfect examples of our medieval fortress. It’s in olden times, the town is entered through the southern gate of Santa Maria, embellished with eighteenthcentury tile – azulejo - decoration. Inside the walls, which at sunset take on a golden coloring, one can sense a cheerful medieval ambience of winding streets, old whitewashed houses bordered with blue or yellow, Manueline embrasures and windows, reminding us that King D. Manuel I (sixteenth century) carried out major works here, and masses of colorful flowers and plants.

Coimbra is the fourth-largest urban centre in Portugal. Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, are its wellpreserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain. During the Late Middle Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural centre. This was in large part helped by the establishment the University of Coimbra in 1290, the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. There is no other Portuguese city like Coimbra in what comes to academic tradition which is present in the students’ everyday life. At Queima das Fitas, the students celebrate the most anticipated event of the year. The bells which have been regulating academic life since the 16th century still toll in the University Tower, reminding us that this is, above all, a university city.

Located in the western Iberian Peninsula along the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. Also known as the “San Francisco of Europe”, Lisbon is set on a series of hills and valleys overlooking the River Tagus and the magnificent 25 de Abril Bridge which spans the river. Recognized as the major economic, financial and political center of the country, the city of Lisbon is also famous for its rich art, architecture and its charm and old buildings, from Romanesque to Gothic, from Manueline to Baroque, from Modern to Postmodern. The city is crossed by historical boulevards, monuments but also by many pedestrians’ areas where you can admire the traditional Portuguese pavement. Cafes, restaurants and bakeries are every few meters, many of them decorated in the typical blue and white decorative tiles called azulejos.
