Over the years many dedicated Saturday Night Live fans have dropped the program from their weekly 'must see' lineup. The skits have gone from bad to worse, and the comedy borders on ridiculous more often than funny. The guest stars often leave much to be desired, and the program regulars more. What, then, was SNL to do to boost their ratings across satellite TV, cable and network television? How about a hip new guest host? Nope. How about a new style, a new set, new comedians, or a new look? Nope. How about getting someone that looks like the average grandma to come in and revive a broken down old show? Nope... wait, no that's the one! With the recent Mother's Day Betty White episode, the show reached its largest TV audience in 18 months! That's quite a success for someone who lived through the invention of not only HD TV, but television itself. The octogenarian actress, known for her work on the program "Golden Girls" when she was already old, took the opportunity to joke about social networking websites, sex, and even about her own age. The last time the program experienced such success was during the last presidential campaign. When Senator John McCain appeared, and Tina Fey made a brief and well received return to the program as his running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, SNL ratings soared, but that was back in November of 2008. If the folks over at Saturday Night Live need some pointers, they should ask White herself. The actress has been cited as commenting on how she was around as production crews were learning the ins and outs of television, and how exactly to make it work. Why, asking someone who was there for the invention of what is today's average modern satellite TV program might be a novel idea for a show that has been, at least some would say, continually disintegrating in the public eye for the last 10 to 20 years. Part of White's appeal on the program was her "universal Grandma" essence that everybody seems to love. There's nothing better than seeing grandma behave badly, and White seems to do it so well. The star has starred on classic programs such as "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in addition to "The Golden Girls," and recently made a name for herself with her sailor's vocabulary. Well, even if she's not the sweetest speaking grandma on the block, nobody could come out of that many years in the entertainment industry without a little bit of grit and toughness thrown into the mix! Long story short, while flipping through all those new high definition channels, if you happen to catch a rerun of this SNL episode give it a chance! Take the opportunity to see grams White explain what a "poke" meant in her day, and certainly not something one finds on Facebook, and later show off her muffins. See her spout of raunchy humor, and get a kick not only out of her comedic timing, but her paradoxically entertaining persona.
