In nearly all cases, one cannot become a great leader unless he has an essential dream, and not just one that sounds good but has not teeth, but rather one that motivates himself and others to take the needed action to assure that the dream becomes a reality. If someone in a leadership does not possess a dream that becomes his motivational driving force, it is nearly impossible to maintain a positive attitude that is necessary to drive forward even when there are obstacles and challenges. It is the essence of that dream that makes a leader's role important enough to make sacrifices, and have the courage to dare to challenge others to reach beyond what is, towards what is both possible and necessary. Hans Selye, who received the Nobel Prize for his work on human stress, stated this, when he said, "To make a great dream come true, you first must have a great dream." 1. The essential nature and value of a great dream to be a great leader helps to explain why, almost invariably, only visionary leaders achieve greatness. A vision is taking a dream and focusing on making it a reality, and what might be achieved if it does, and why that dream and vision are so essential for effective leadership. Without a great dream, how could any leader have essential and important goals, and without those, there could be no true action taken, because one cannot develop an action plan without a goal to aim for. 2. Perhaps the most famous leadership dream was described by Martin Luther King, Jr., in his historic and memorable, "I have a dream" speech. In that speech, Dr. King eloquently and emotionally described his vision for the civil rights movement, and the goal of true civil rights equality. It was that dream, I believe, that made Dr. King the "father" of the American civil rights movement during the 20th Century, and motivated others to follow him. His dream envisioned cooperation, equality, and true peace. Leaders like Dr. King are rare and far between, but his dream and his vision are the models that all effective leaders must aim for. 3. In my over three decades of qualifying, training, developing and working with leaders, I often get a sense of which ones will end up being the most effective. They are not always the brightest or the best orators, but invariably they are the ones with a drive motivated by how important their vision and dream is. 4. Great leadership only occurs as a result of someone having the strength, integrity, dream and vision to motivate others to follow. There are many in leadership roles, but few truly great leaders. Those who wish to become leaders should examine their motivations, dreams and visions, and what they wish to accomplish, as well as how important it is to them, and will be to others.
