Among all the fuels which are derived from coal, probably the most important one is the metallurgical coke. It is a cellular coherent mass which is produced in the coal carbonization process. It involves a decomposition of coal exposed to high temperature, inert atmosphere and yields, in addition to coke and of course some liquid and gaseous by-products. Coke usually is being produced from high-rank coals which have really good coking power. Such best-quality coals, on a dry, contain ash-free basis, from eighty four to ninety percent of carbon and twenty five to thirty percent of volatile matter. Weakly coking coals usually are blended with strongly coking coals and from time to time also with coke breeze - in order to conserve natural reserves of strongly coking varieties. The physical and chemical properties of the metallurgical coke vary and largely depend on the coal type and carbonization temperature. In the typical American coking plant one ton of coal chemicals and coaking coal yields contains six to seven hundred kilograms of blast furnace coke and fifty to one hundred kilograms of coke breeze. The rest is mostly ammonium sulfate, tar and light oil, and of course all the coke-oven gases in amount of three hundred to three hundred sixty cubic meters per ton. In order to evaluate all the effects of low-quality and good-quality coals blended together to make a metallurgical coke, we can analyze thermal decomposition behavior of these coal blends. Coke in containers seems to be in stand, at rest, static. But inside, at the molecular level, it living and dynamic, all the carbon atoms are still in motion, though it can't be seen with the naked eye.
