Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus.
Percentile Rank - As the percentile moves toward 1, it indicates this animal is top X% of the Breed
ANGUS EPD DEFINITIONS
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for post-weaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.
Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.
Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).
GELBVIEH & BALANCER EPD DEFINITIONS
Calving Ease Direct (CED), percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Birth Weight (BW), predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning Weight (WW), predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Yearling Weight (YW), predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Milk EPD (Milk), the genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Total maternal (TM), An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.
30-month pregnancy (Pg30), predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Stayability (STAY), predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Docility (Doc), is reported as a percentage, with higher numbers indicating a higher percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring.
Yield grade (YG), differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass Weight (CW), Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (CREA), differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MARB), Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Fat (CFAT), Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
FPI™ which stands for feeder profit index: An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

EPD DEFINITIONS
Calving Ease Direct (CE) Reported as the difference in probability of calves being born unassisted out of first-calf heifers. Higher values are more favorable.
Birth Weight(BW) Reported as the difference in pounds of calf birth weight. Desirable values are dependent upon management goals, however if selecting for reduced calving difficulty the appropriate EPD to use is CE.
Weaning Weight (WW) Reported as the difference in pounds of progeny weaning weight. Higher values are more favorable.
Yearling Weight (YW) Reported as the difference in pounds of progeny yearling weight. Higher values are more favorable.
Average Daily Gain (ADG) Reported as the difference in post-weaning pounds gained on a daily basis. Higher values are more favorable.
Calving Ease Maternal (MCE) Reported as the difference in probability of daughters calving unassisted as first-calf heifers. Higher values are more favorable.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) Reported as the pounds of weaning weight expressed in daughters’ progeny due to the milk production of the daughter and the direct genetic effect for weaning growth. Higher values are more favorable. Milk (MLK) Reported as the difference in maternal pounds of weaning weight from an individual’s daughters due to milk. Desirable values are dependent on management constraints.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) Reported as the pounds of weaning weight expressed in daughters’ progeny due to the milk production of the daughter and the direct genetic effect for weaning growth. Higher values are more favorable.
Stability (STAY) Reported as the difference in probability of a sire’s daughters staying in the herd until 6 years of age, given that they calved as a 2-year-old. Higher values are more favorable.
Docility (DOC) Reported as the difference in yearling-age progeny temperament, represented as a difference in probability that progeny will be scored as a 1, rather than a 2-6 on the docility scale. The docility scale subjectively orders individuals on temperament from docile disposition (1) to extremely aggressive (6). Higher values are more favorable.
Carcass Weight (CW) Reported as the difference in pounds of progeny carcass weight. Higher values are more favorable. Only economically relevant if producers retain ownership or are driven by terminal performance.
Yield Grade (YG) Reported as the difference in progeny USDA Yield Grade score units (1–5). Lower values represent leaner carcasses with more sale able beef. Only economically relevant if producers retain ownership or are driven by terminal performance.
Marbling Score (MARB) Reported as the difference in progeny carcass marbling score. Higher values are more favorable.
Ribeye Area (REA) Reported as the difference in square inches of ribeye area between the 12th and 13th rib. Higher values are more favorable. Only economically relevant if producers retain ownership or are driven by terminal performance.
All-Purpose Index (API) Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI) Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Angus cattle offer a balanced genetic profile in terms of calving ease, growth and quality carcass merit. Angus cattle offer excellent maternal and milking instincts, exceptional milking capabilities and high fertility rates.
Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle offer excellent maternal traits, longevity, and added fertility. The Balancer is the best of both worlds: it has the growth and muscle you’d expect in the Gelbvieh breed, with the marbling quality you find in the Angus breed.
Simmental cattle offer excellent performance in production of milk and beef, plus adaptability to a variety of environmental influences. The Sim-Angus breed combines the best traits of both parent breeds; phenomenal weight gain, muscling, meat yield and maternal traits.
Hybrid vigor, or heterosis, is the increased production of certain traits from the crossing of genetically different individuals.
Heterosis seeks improvements in cow fertility, calf livability, calf weaning weight, and cow longevity. By adding hybrid through different breeds or new bloodlines in a registered herd ranchers create superior animals which in turn is more profitable to their operation.
Line breeding is highly strategized. It is breeding to close relatives in order to lock in desirable traits. Line breeding seeks to improve or maintain specific outstanding genetics from one generation to another while minimizing the transfer of undesirable traits. By emphasizing these outstanding traits ranchers create superior animals which in turn is more profitable to their operation.
