Vanessa 914U

TJB

Highlighting the most prominent and influential “Vanessa” this month! Due to the large influence of Vickie Vails back in the day, we decided to divide the family into “Vanessa” and “Velvet.” 914U anchors the Vanessa side and has left us with a tremendous set of progeny including ranch favorites, Sandhills daughters 4103C and 4101C (pictured above). We also have Sand Trap daughters that look awesome in the spring open heifers as well as possibly the best heifer in this crop, a Rebel Yell (she will sell in our Dozen Divas Sale). Selling two Sand Trap sons on April 10th in our TJB/Three T Farms Bull Sale! Visit the website for info on this and upcoming sale opportunities.

GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD

Nutrition Options for the 21st Century Herd

W

By Dan McCarty

hen you look back over the past fifty years or so and think about all the technological and scientific advancements that have helped shape how we manage our cattle and make decisions, the list is quite impressive. EPDs used for selection have evolved, expanded, and improved with the inclusion of genomics. Reproductive technology has come a long way as well. Even our animal health protocols have changed and improved along the way. Research and development has led to increased efficacy and tailored vaccination plans with many being dependent on what kind of country you run in and the specific health threats facing your cowherd. These advancements have helped producers provide a higher quality, more consistent product that is produced much more efficiently than it was fifty years ago. One of the areas of management that I think has evolved the most, but is often overlooked in terms of technological advancements, is the area of animal nutrition. Nutrition is also one of the only topics on the list I just mentioned that has an impact on all the other topics. If your cows are not in the right body condition you will not see the increased efficacy of those pharmaceutical products and you will face challenges implementing any reproductive technology. In a purebred operation, I believe nutrition is one of the areas that receives the least amount thought and planning and is the least talked about—more late nights are spent pondering mating and marketing decisions than what adjustments can be made on the nutrition side of the equation. Cattle feeders have always been on the forefront of advancing nutrition. In the early days, whole grains were common in rations, but somewhere along the line, we figured out those grains can be better utilized by the rumen if we roll, flake, or steam them. Today, feedyards

6 | APRIL 2021

employ nutritionists that constantly monitor and tweak rations to ensure cattle can express their full genetic potential in the most efficient and economical way. Incredible advancements in the understanding of rumen microbes, fetal programming, and the interaction of trace minerals which originated in feedyards, now benefit the entire beef supply chain. Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tip O’Neill coined the phrase “all politics is local” and on the farm and ranch level, all animal nutrition is local, meaning that cattle producers across the county have adapted to utilizing local resources to meet the nutritional requirements of their cattle. Where we are located, grass hay and alfalfa hay are pretty much our only options as freight adds up fast. Even sourcing corn stalk bales or straw for bedding can be expensive. Because of this, I always enjoy visiting with producers across the country to learn about how they supplement their cattle. I have a good friend in Arizona who runs in some rough county where forage is limited during certain times of the year. He picks up distillers from a local microbrewery, filling 50-gallon drums to supplement his cattle on the desert. It might not be the most labor friendly option, but it is certainly cheaper than the dairy quality alfalfa hay which is available nearby. Animal nutrition has come a long way since the first feedyards were built in the United States, and I think many innovations are on the horizon as science and technology continues to push for efficiency and meeting consumer demand for sustainability claims. How this plays out is anyone’s guess, but I think genomics and blockchain technology will be common terms in the future of animal nutrition. It is a lot to think about, so for now, I’ll keep feeding my grass hay and get back to thinking about those mating decisions. F

Transferring Animals to Your Loyal Customers

hether they are fellow members of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) or commercial customers, receiving confirmation of ownership on newly purchased animals is an important part of a continued relationship with your buyers. Additionally, performing a proper transfer allows your account within the AGA Online Registry Service to remain current and up to date with an active inventory. The AGA Online Registry Service offers the opportunity to transfer animals to a buyer, or number of buyers, in a few simple steps within the registry, regardless of your customer’s affiliation with the AGA. To use the transfer tool, log into your AGA Online Registry Service account. Running horizontally on the general profile information screen is a row of tabs. Under the Herd tab, is another series of tabs that will help organize your animals by sex, as well as age, to conveniently locate an animal within your inventory. The “All” tab, furthest to the left, will show every animal that is active within your herd, regardless of age. Within each tab you will see a list of columns with grey boxes to the right of each animal: View, Edit, Transfer, Dispose, Not for Sale. To begin the transfer process, simply locate the animal(s) being transferred and select “Transfer”. When doing so, the button will turn from grey to white and read “Queued”. This means the animal has been added to your transfer queue and is awaiting buyer information. (Figure 1) Once you have selected the animals needing transferred and checked to ensure each animal’s

(Figure 1)

“Transfer” button reads “Queued”, find the red arrow on the left work menu that reads “Work Queues”. From this drop down, select the green arrow that reads “Transfers.” The next screen will show you each animal that you have selected to be transferred. Each animal’s registration number, birth date, tattoo and sex are listed within each section to differentiate for those who may be sending animals to multiple buyers within the same process. If you are transferring all animals within the transfer queue to the same buyer locate the section at the top of the screen (Figure A) asking for the buyer information. If you are transferring select animals to one buyer and another set of animals to a different buyer within the transfer queue, use the following steps below for each animal (Figure B).

Only enter information in the top section if all animals within the queue are going to the same buyer. Select whether you wish for the new Certificate paper with ownership to be mailed to you “Seller” or your customer “Buyer”. In the white box beneath “Buyer” you will enter the AGA member or non-member number of the individual you wish to transfer the animal to. If you do not know

REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS GW their AGA number or if they do not have an existing number with the association simply click “Search for Buyer”. If your buyer does not appear, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click “Click to Create a new Profile”. You will be prompted to enter their mailing address creating a non-member number for that buyer.

retaining ownership of the animal in any capacity, you will enter the percentage this buyer possesses; 50%, 33% etc. Finally, be sure the transfer date matches the purchase date and select “Validate All” If there are no errors each animal’s section will turn green and you can select “Continue” at the bottom of your screen to complete the transfer. Remember, any female 13 months of age or older must have a herd assessment for the current year in order to be transferred. Ideally, Mulliniks says that a mature cow should maintain a 5 BCS both pre and post calving to promote estrus between 45-55 days post-partum, as well as promoting a higher chance of settling at that first estrus.

GW FEATURE First and second calf cows are recommended to carry a BCS of 5.5-6. “A mature cow doesn’t need additional nutrients for growth. They aren’t trying to direct nutrients to both lactation and growth like a young cow is,” Mulliniks says. “It helps those young cows to have a little bit of a condition buffer.” For young and mature cows, alike, the key to maintaining a healthy BCS is providing a quality feedstuff. And the key to providing higher quality feedstuffs is knowing what you have, Mulliniks says, and recommends producers make a visual assessment of their cows to judge good, moderate and poor condition. “Visually, the eye always goes to the ends—the good or poor cows in your herd,” he says. “If you are seeing a higher percentage of body condition score of 4, you can separate those animals to provide a feed that’s higher in energy. I also recommend separating out younger females. They aren’t as aggressive as older cows, and we have seen (positive) pregnancy rate differences from groups of younger females who are managed separately.”

16 | APRIL 2021

Mulliniks also helps producers navigate ration formulation using the feedstuffs they have available. He recommends that producers test their feed so that they know their “starting point”. A common issue Mulliniks sees is the supplementation of low-quality forages with corn—a problem that can be detrimental to a cow’s maintenance during cold, wet weather. Mulliniks explains that three to five pounds of corn will replace three to five pounds of forage intake, however, that decrease in overall intake can actually decrease total energy intake. “Corn and low-quality forage doesn’t work. I highly caution feeding corn without adjusting to a higherquality forage. Forages need to be somewhere around 10% crude protein or greater to make it work; DDG (dried distiller’s grain) is a great substitute,” he says. “It’s high protein and has a lot more energy than corn.” Mulliniks says that your cows will tell you a lot, “Body condition will tell you what their (cows’) condition is. Watch that and change what you are doing based on what your visual assessment tells you. Don’t be afraid to regroup and feed differently.” F

Beef Cattle Nutrition Guidelines By Cade Cameron

N

utrition is an important part of the cattle industry. It impacts growth and, in general, keeps them healthy both in the pastures and feedlots. In the basic diet of cattle, they need the following nutrients: water, carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. These six items are the essentials. However, the specific requirements for each animal will depend on the age, class, and even stage of production. With proper consumption, cattle will use these nutrients to grow, store energy, and will be able to maintain a healthy life. Cattle are ruminants. A ruminant stomach is made up of four different compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. The rumen can hold up to 42 gallons of feed, water, and bacteria. Bacteria break down the fiber and convert it to energy. Bacteria will continually wash out of the rumen then become digested in the intestines. The bacteria produce the protein the animal needs to grow and function. On a dry matter basis, cattle will eat 4-5 tons of forage per year. In the spring and summer months, and even into winter months with the addition of cover crops, cattle graze green cover. Based on the type of plants being

grazed and the size of the animal, stocking rates should be calculated. On average, the USDA recommends 2 acres for one cow-calf pair per year. Clean water—the most important staple of an animals intake—should also be available at all times. Overall, nutrition in cattle is greatly important. Without it, cattle wouldn’t be able to function. Just remember that water, carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals are the six nutrients needed. To learn more about nutrition, experiment building rations with different feedstuffs and build your own rations, contact your local extension office. The majority of land-grant university extension services have free tools to calculate intake, build rations and review return on investment and breakeven thresholds for different scenarios. Breeding Soundness Exams Identify Bull Fertility Issues from Frostbite By Sandy Johnson, Kansas State University Extension Beef Specialist, Colby, KS

T

he impacts of the cold weather experienced in Kansas and surrounding states in early February will not be forgotten anytime soon and will leave lingering effects. The bull battery often does not get close attention during the winter months and some may have lacked adequate bedding or wind protection needed to prevent scrotal frostbite. Older bulls with pendulous scrotums seem more prone to issues than yearling bulls. Bull breeding soundness exams (BSE) were first developed due to concerns regarding bull fertility after a series of storms during the winter of 1948 – 1949. According to the National Weather Service, a massive blizzard hit in early January that lasted 3 days and brought heavy snow, strong winds and cold temperatures. Additional storms through mid-February created huge snowdrifts. The effects of frostbite were then followed in 15 bulls impacted by the 1949 blizzard and 8 of the bulls refused service for 6 months. Bull anatomy is designed to keep the testicles at a lower temperature than the body core and during cold weather the testicles are drawn closer to the body. However, compared to the rest of the body, the scrotum has less hair and thinner skin. When temperature regulation is not maintained, fertility is reduced. A bull suffering from frostbite may exhibit inflammation and swelling of the scrotum a few days after the weather event. The subsequent heat produced from the inflammation negatively effects the sperm cells maturing and being stored in the epididymis. The effects of frostbite may be temporary but may also result in permanent damage to sperm production. Scabs of various sizes may become evident as healing occurs, but the lack of a scab does not mean there is no injury. In more extreme cases, tissue adhesion can influence circulation in the scrotum and scrotal circumference can be reduced. After a 1964 blizzard, eight veterinarians reported on 553 bulls with some level of frostbite. In this group,

22 | APRIL 2021

semen quality of 89% of bulls with severe frostbite was unsatisfactory, in bulls with moderate frostbite, 48% were satisfactory, 25% were questionable and 27% were unsatisfactory. Regardless of weather, bulls should have a breeding soundness exam before each breeding season. Several large data sets indicate that 10-30% of mature bulls fail BSE annually. It is recommended that breeding soundness exams be delayed 60 days following the occurrence of frostbite or illness with elevated body temperature. Exams earlier than this may result in culling bulls that may yet recover. A breeding soundness exam consists of a physical evaluation, palpation of accessory sex glands and testes, and semen evaluation. The exam does not evaluate the wiliness to mate or serving capacity so observing activity during the breeding season is an important component of minimizing the risk of open cows. If adjustments were not made for increased energy demands of cattle during the extreme cold weather, weight loss most likely occurred and would be greater in animals that were already thin. A study in Western Canada found fewer low body condition bulls (2, scale of 1 thin to 5 obese) had satisfactory semen quality compared to bulls in moderate condition (2.5 – 3.5). On the other end of the spectrum, fat in the scrotum interferes with the normal cooling process and is detrimental to semen quality. Bulls should be in good body condition, but not fat, in advance of the breeding season. Finding out after the fact your bull was only a ‘cow companion’ during the breeding season is a costly problem. Schedule breeding soundness exams with your veterinarian so unsatisfactory breeders (cow companions) can be replaced before the breeding season begins. Mastering Minerals: A Producer's Guide to Choosing the Right Mix of Minerals for Best Economical Results

B

By Austin Black

eef producers often overlook mineral supplementation. And each company offers a different formulation, so choosing the right product can be difficult. Producers can avoid the confusion by understanding how mineral works and what their herd really needs.

Do or Don’t Minerals are found naturally in the cow’s diet. But supplementing helps fill in the gaps when the diet or nutrient needs change. Minerals impact everything from reproductive performance to bone structure and hair quality to biological processes in cows. Robert Jones, Great Plains Livestock Consulting, said mineral formulations include macro and micro minerals. Macro minerals, like calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, are stored in the animal’s bones. Micro minerals, including zinc, copper and manganese, are only in the body in small amounts. Since cows need these minerals to function and perform, they will pull from internal reserves if there is a deficiency in their diets. “Typically, you won’t know your cows are deficient until there is a problem, which is too late,” Jones said. So, the easy answer for choosing whether to feed mineral or not is yes. But, the answer doesn’t stop there. Not every bag of mineral is equal. So it’s important to understand what formulation your herd actually needs.

24 | APRIL 2021

Learn the Difference Top end minerals include a blend of organic, inorganic, chelated and trace minerals. And the difference between them boils down to absorption. Minerals are all absorbed through the small intestine. But, organic and inorganic minerals don’t have the same absorption sites. Inorganic minerals are the least absorbent, meaning some of what the animal consumes won’t actually remain in the body. Organic minerals are the most absorbent and the highest priced. When blended together, these minerals have a higher chance of absorption. This equation is why Jones recommends producers use different minerals throughout the year, according to herd needs. “During calving and breeding season, I like chelated minerals. The cows need more minerals and chelated has better absorption,” he said. “When she’s maintaining a pregnancy and not lactating, you can get away with an inorganic [mineral] and save some money.”

INDUSTRY CONNECT GW The Essentials

The Right Blend

Regardless of the formulation, Jones recommends producers include zinc, copper, manganese, calcium, phosphorus, salt, selenium and magnesium in their mix.

Still, not every herd needs top-of-the-line supplement, depending on their diet and environment. Some producers, like Tom Roberts, have great success with basic mineral. Through years of testing his forage, minerals and his cows’ livers, Roberts discovered that a basic mineral package provided everything his herd needed and cost less.

“Those are the main minerals you’ll supplement in most minerals on the market,” he said. Additionally, it’s important to have a vitamin pack and be cautious of high phosphorus minerals. “If guys are supplementing a high phosphorus byproduct such as distillers’ grains, you don’t necessarily need to supply any supplemental phosphorus. [Phosphorus is] one of the most expensive ingredients in mineral,” Jones said. By comparison, summer and fall forages are often low in phosphorus, making the mineral supplement more necessary. Producers should also note the levels of each mineral on their bag and work with their nutritionist to determine the appropriate amount for their herd. “For example, copper and zinc will be listed in parts per million (ppm). That’s the concentration of the element,” Jones said. This measures milligrams of mineral per kilogram of feed and the higher the concentration, the higher the cost.

“There are all kinds of minerals out there from $15-$37 per bag. As long as I’m meeting nutritional requirements, I’m going to try to be a low cost, high quality producer,” he said.

Roberts raises cattle near West Plains. “I’m in the hills and rocks,” he said. Fescue is abundant on his farm, but the quality differs from other regions of the state. So, to pick the right mineral formulation, Roberts tests his forage and mineral every year. He also does a liver biopsy on a few cows each year. “That’s the only true way to know if that animal’s mineral content is correct,” he said. His vet pulls the sample and sends it to a University Extension lab. The procedure and test costs $150-$200, but it saves money on mineral — which Roberts believes is a vital input. “I believe in prevention. It’s a lot easier to not have a problem then to have one and try to get through it,” he said. “70% of an animal’s nutrition comes from their diet. If you’re going to see the genetic potential, they have to have the nutrition to express it.” He has seen producers try to skimp on mineral and knows it can be detrimental. “People get by with no mineral, but sooner or later it’ll catch up when that cow is 5-6 years old. Everything adds up,” he said. Roberts and Jones agree that mineral should be present at all times. Because diet requirements and forage quality changes, cows always need varying levels of supplement. “I always preach to guys that they need mineral out 365 days a year,” Jones said.

GW INDUSTRY CONNECTION Managing Nutrients Continuous supplement doesn’t have to be expensive though. And producers have a couple options for managing the amount and quality of mineral they feed. Jones recommends a 4 oz per head per day consumption. But he knows that will vary between animals. And consumption may increase across the whole herd at times. “If cows are going through a bag of mineral faster than anticipated, they may be craving the salt,” Jones said. He compares the consumption to eating a steak dinner. “We don’t know to stop eating when we hit our protein requirement. We keep eating until we are full because it tastes good. A cow is basically eating that because she likes the taste,” he said. Increasing the amount of salt in the mineral can sometimes reduce the intake. Providing free-choice salt can also satisfy the craving. “I’m typically putting a minimum of 20% salt in my 4-ounce mineral formulation,” Jones said. “That’s where I’ve seen steady intakes for a 4-ounce mineral. If you feed a mineral with less than 10% salt, you will want to provide free choice salt out or overconsumption is very likely.”

Changing with the Seasons Changing minerals throughout the year can be beneficial if producers are trying to maximize performance. “Feed a higher fortified [mineral] two months prior to calving and two months into breeding season,” Jones said. “Past that, I switch to a gestation mineral and drop the fortification back because her maintenance requirements are lower.”

should look at mineral supplement as a program that flexes throughout the year. “Spend the money when you need it, and save it when you don’t,” he said.

Balance with Forage The other method of reducing mineral consumption is through forage management. High quality forage reduces the need for mineral supplement. This is why rotational grazing is so effective. Grazing a plant during the vegetative state provides the highest nutrient level. And the more grass a cow can eat, the more nutrients she can consume. NRCS Grazing Specialist Selma Mascaro said most cool-season pastures are the best during April and again in September and October. During the summer, she recommends producers graze warm-season grasses to maintain nutrient requirements in the cow’s diet and ease the pressure on dormant fescue. This allows better fall growth and maintains a healthy stand. “Extending the grazing season as far into the fall and winter months is a game changer for a lot of people,” she said. Rotating pastures and allowing adequate rest keeps grass in a high-quality vegetative state longer. This means nutrients are more available in the forage and mineral supplement may not be as crucial. “When you’re operating a grazing system, your goal is to meet the needs of the livestock while managing the forage for quality and quantity,” Mascaro said. “I think it’s important to recognize there’s a balance between those variables.” The only way to know if forage is actually meeting the nutritional needs is by testing. Both grass and hay can be tested through Extension labs to see what nutrients are available and what minerals are lacking.

“But if you take 4 ounces in your hand, that’s basically a lick,” he said.

“When you’re actually grazing forage on the stem, your supplement needs are going to be different than when you are feeding hay. Testing hay is the best way to be sure you are meeting livestock needs in the winter months,” she said.

To balance the pattern, he recommends feeding mineral free choice for at least a month to determine if consumption levels out or if the cows are overeating. Then, modify the mineral according to the season, nutritional needs and forage quality. Jones said producers

Thank you to Missouri Beef Cattlemen Magazine for contributing to this month's Industry Connection.

Producers should also be mindful that calves will consume mineral, too. Jones said a calf will often eat around 2 oz per head per day.

26 | APRIL 2021

Producers have a lot to consider when it comes to mineral, but they also have a lot of sources of information to find the best balance. F

Cydectin® (moxidectin) Pour-On: Let the good guys roll.

The industry's #1 selling pour-on brand contains the active ingredient moxidectin, which controls 33 parasite species and stages while remaining dung beetle friendly.2 In a study, manure from cattle treated with Cydectin showed no visible difference in the

number of dung pats destroyed or buried compared to dung pats from untreated cattle.1 Dung beetle adults and larvae play a vital role in pasture manure management, recycling cattle dung, improving soil health and keeping other cattle parasites in check. Visit your retailer or ElancoLivestock.com to learn more. Keep Cydectin out of reach of children. Suarez VH, Lifschitz AL, Sallovitz JM, et al. (2009). March GW Correction: Hammer Awarded Eagle Pass Ranch Female for All-Around Award

I

n the coverage of the 2021 Cattlemen's Congress in the March Gelbvieh World, the incorrect name was published as the winner of the 2020 AGJA Route 66 Classic. We apologize for the oversight. Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, South Dakota, continued the tradition of providing a great incentive for American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members participating in events at the AGJA Junior Classic. Eagle Pass Ranch donated a heifer to the All-Around winner at the 2020 AGJA Route 66 Classic, Springfield, Missouri, this past summer. This year’s winner Gabrielle

Hammer, Wallace, Kansas, was recognized at the 2021 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The All-Around Award is determined through participation at the Junior Classic show. The member that earns the most points for participation and placing in Junior Classic contests receives this honor. Eagle Pass Ranch has been a long-time supporter of the AGJA. Without their support an award like this would not be possible. Thank you, Eagle Pass Ranch! F
