BOARD’S VIEW

Fostering the Development of the Next Generation How many of us make plans or set goals? We plan when we are going to preg check the heifers. We might have the goal to update the working chute. We spend some of our time planning for the future of our business, or contemplating what direction we want to take our cattle breeding program. Unfortunately, some life changing event might make us take pause and remind us we need to get our will updated, or at least write the password to bank account down, so someone could transact business on our behalf. By Brian Dunn AS WE LOOK to the future, how many of us stop and think about the Gelbvieh breed and who will be transacting the business in 15, 20 or 25 years? We should all be thinking about how we continue to keep the breed relevant in the beef industry, but do we think about who will be producing the cattle or representing the breed to the industry. Most likely, this is probably not on anyone’s short list of concerns or priorities. I know 25 years ago it was not something on my mind, but at least the AGA Board of Directors at that time had a program in place to foster young Gelbvieh breeders, also known as the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). On Memorial Day weekend I took my two oldest sons to their first AGJA event, the Western Regional show in Missouri. This gave me a chance to reflect over my time in the junior program and view the program through their eyes. Some things have changed; there are different names and faces in the barn, aluminum chutes are the new steel, there is a new style of clipping and forming up the tail, Hamm’s is no longer a brand name of show supplies and most of my old show equipment is definitely not in style, but could be classified ‘vintage’. But some things have stayed constant. It still takes a crew of dedicated volunteers to make it happen, family help and support is a must, cattle don’t always act like they do at home,

6 | AUGUST 2015

and triumph and disappointment still take place.

It has been 20+ years since I last participated, but my Champion quiz bowl team ceramic bull sits on my dresser and the class champion belt buckle in the drawer. Not to minimize their success, but I couldn’t tell you who won the shows or even how I placed with all the animals, but the value of the junior program can be summed up this way in my mind. I am currently serving with individuals on the AGA board, who came through the junior program, where we had the opportunity to learn how to conduct the business of the junior program. Individuals whom I became friends through the junior program are now industry leaders as cattle producers, scientists, teachers and allied industry experts. I believe the junior program can play a role in the success of the breed. Not all the participating juniors will be producers of Gelbvieh cattle in the future, but hopefully they will be passionate about Gelbvieh cattle and supporters of the beef industry. Much like in education, lessons learned outside the classroom can have a real benefit on an individual’s success; I would hope they have gained skills and knowledge from outside the showring in the junior program. Some of the activities available at the Jr. Classic that come to mind are the contests to improve the junior’s knowledge of the breed, the chance for interaction with adult Gelbvieh breeders, and the real world applications of live animal viewing, followed by carcass viewing. Plan or no plan, at the end of the day reality exists; we are Gelbvieh breeders and food producers. It is paramount for our breed to insure its continued success that we continue to foster the development of the next generation of leaders and Gelbvieh breeders. Who knows, one of the other juniors my sons met may be writing this column in 25 years! FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW

Jump-Starting AGA’s Future Membership THE MOST RECENT American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) junior national event held in Springfield, Ohio has come and gone. The weeks of preparation labored by those AGJA members who capitalized on the programs that the association offers paid off. A total of 131 AGJA members attended “The Heart of It All” Classic and had the opportunity to compete in educational contests, exhibit their cattle and establish lifelong friendships with potential future business partners in the beef industry.

What should the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) take from observing our junior members of the association? What questions should we be asking about the future of the AGA and how those junior members may evolve into active adult members and leaders of our organization? How does the AGA prepare our AGJA. members to thrive in the AGA and animal agriculture, the beef industry in particular? During the banquet at the AGJA Junior Classic it was said on multiple occasions that as we progress from junior Gelbvieh association members to adult members, “Our roles may change, but we are never done.” Many of the members of the AGA Board of Directors and even current AGA staff were first junior members of our association. In some instances those members and staff served on the AGJA board as well. A simple observation of junior board members conducting the operations of the Junior Classic can be made. AGJA board members’ actions during the national contests, national shows, business meeting and ultimately the awards banquet provides proof that the next generation is preparing to take their place within the AGA membership. AGJA members have opportunities to expedite the preparation to not only become AGA members but future leaders of the AGA as well. AGJA members are encouraged to become acquainted with the skilled staff of AGA. As AGJA members have interest in marketing, graphic design, editing language or the genetic information that describes Gelbvieh and Balancer® 8 | AUGUST 2015

cattle, the AGA has talented staff well versed not only in Gelbvieh circles but in the industry as well. These helpful staff personnel are capable of jump-starting young members’ careers in animal agriculture. The new AGA National Convention, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, will also be a great place for aspiring AGA members to become more connected within the Gelbvieh family. The all-new AGA 101 program is geared toward new, young, as well as older members that wish to be more involved in the leadership of the AGA. AGJA members may certainly benefit from getting in on the ground floor of this program. There are currently 372 AGJA active members in the U.S. One of the goals of the “Impacting the Beef Business™” strategic plan is to increase membership of the AGA nationwide. The development of the AGJA membership is an opportunity for the entire organization to expand from within the ranks of our own AGA member ancestry as many of those AGJA members’ entire families are involved in the association as a junior or an adult member. Change and modernization in animal agriculture and the process of supplying genetics to a competitive beef industry occurs at a rapid pace. The development of the next generation of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetic suppliers is already taking place within the AGJA. Now, junior members are encouraged through the entire organization to begin the process of becoming the next generation. Sincerely,

Myron Edelman AGA Executive Director

JUNIOR VOICE

Gelbvieh Family and Gelbvieh Fun First off, I hope that everyone has enjoyed this show season thus far. For me, Jr. Classic and Eastern Regionals were two shows that I will never forget because of the memories I made with my Gelbvieh family. By Sydney Bigger AT THE LINCOLN Land Eastern Regional, one of my favorite times was when the Gelbvieh family came together to raise money for “The Heart of It All” Junior Classic and have some good old-fashioned fun. A dunk tank was set up at the fairgrounds, and many people wanted to see Justin Vehige in it. Enough people wanted to dunk Justin that we actually raised $500 in a matter of minutes to get him in the tank. After we got Justin in the dunk tank, the kids lined up to throw the softballs and send him plummeting into the ice cold water that was put in the tank only earlier in the day. It took a couple kids, but Junior Ambassador Jessie Lowe sealed the deal and hit that fateful X that dunked Justin. After Justin crawled out, Ethan Bigger stepped up to let the juniors dunk him and give everyone a chance for fun. A huge thanks to Justin, Ethan, and everyone who donated to this great cause.

water balloon fight with juniors. After the annual meeting on Wednesday night, several juniors got together to throw water balloons at each other and the Jr. Board. At the end, it is safe to say that I was soaked, but it was worth it to see the great time that everyone had.

These activities are just two examples of how our Gelbvieh juniors have fun together and give me even more reason to love my Gelbvieh family. FFF

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS

Selecting for Female Fertility Ranchers understand the benefit of fertility, longevity and the role that maximizing cow productivity plays in the profit equation. The influence Gelbvieh has on maternal and lifetime productivity traits is well-known by producers who utilize Gelbvieh within their respective cowherds. By Kari White IF YOU HAVE browsed through the Education Center

tab of the American Gelbvieh Association website lately, you might have noticed a page called “EPD Research”. Included on this page are all the new selection tools AGA has developed for member review. In the past, the heifer pregnancy (HP) and pregnant at 30 month (PG) Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) have been included on this page. Starting with the summer 2015 National Cattle Evaluation, HP and PG30 will be published with the rest of an animal’s EPDs as a production trait. What are HP and PG30, and how can they be used to enhance fertility in your herd? The HP EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. To have a heifer pregnancy EPD, a female must have a yearling weight observation to be assumed as exposed to a bull. If a calf is then recorded around two years of age the female is given a successful HP record. An example of how these EPDs can be used to identify superior sires for genetic improvement is as follows: Bull A has a HP EPD of 12.48, while Bull B has a HP EPD of 10.45. There is a 2.03 difference in the values of their EPDs, which means that 2.03 percent more daughters from Bull A will calve as first calf heifers than daughters from Bull B.

14 | AUGUST 2015

The PG30 EPD is the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given they have calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three, given they calved as first-calf heifers. To have a PG30 EPD, a female must have a successful HP record.

Just as a reminder, submitting data for HP and PG30 EPDs will increase the number of animals with the $Cow index in your herd. In order for an animal to have a $Cow, they must have the HP and PG30 EPDs. $Cow represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. The AGA Registry Service now allows for the recording of breeding data on females. As more breeding data gets accumulated, the inclusion criteria for HP will change from yearling weight to exposure data. If you have questions on how to record exposure data, see the tutorial on Pasture Exposure Data on www.gelbvieh. org by clicking on “Registry Service Tutorials” under the “Education Center” tab on the homepage, or call the office at 303-465-2333. REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS

Explaining Udder Scoring and Weaning Data Entry By Dolores Gravley LATELY I HAVE been receiving calls from members with questions regarding the teat size and udder suspension scoring criteria listed on the “Birth Data Entry Screen”. Reporting udder scoring is important because udder and teat quality are two of the more important functional traits that can be evaluated. Udder soundness can become a concern for multiple reasons including, added labor, reduced longevity, reduced calf performance, and the fact that udder and teat characteristics appear to be heritable. Data will be added with the long-term goal of implementing this into our evaluation of genetics for longevity, cow productivity and profitability. Teat size scores range from 9, very small, to 1, very large and are subjective assessments of teat length and circumference. As a rule, smaller teat sizes are more desirable. Large teat size can cause difficulty for the newborn calf to nurse. Udder suspension scores range from 9, very tight, to 1, very pendulous, and is an assessment of udder support. Weak udder suspension results in pendulous udders that make it hard for a calf to nurse. As the cow ages, a pendulous udder can hang down too low and may cause serious problems and an increased potential for injury. Teat size and udder suspension scores can be entered in the “Birth Data Entry Screen” by using the dropdown menu for “Susp” and “Teat” for the dam of each calf being entered. Simply select a score from 1 through 9 for both “Susp” and “Teat”. A complete guideline with pictures of the udder scoring examples can be found at www.gelbvieh.org by clicking on the “Data Collection and Trait Information” page in the “Library” under the “Education Center” tab. How to enter Weaning or Yearling Data With weaning time for the spring herd right around the corner its not too early to start thinking about entering weaning data. Below are the instructions that will direct you in entering the weaning data for weaned calves. There are a few ways to enter weights. The instructions below are the easiest I have found. 1. Under Work Menu click on “Herd Mgmt” then 20 | AUGUST 2015

“Inventory”. This will take you to the account’s Herd Assessment (HAS) inventory. 2. Click on “Calf Crops” (upper right on grey shaded tabs) 3. The upper right will show you “Switch Year” and have 2015 in the box. This will show you all the calves recorded with the birth year 2015. Helpful Hint: To change the calving year click on the dropdown box next to the year. You will now be able to see missing data (i.e.: wean weight etc.) by looking under “Wean” or “Year”. If there is a date, the weight data is in our database. If there is a little square box, the data has not been entered. 4. Click on the box next to the animal you want to enter data for. The box will change to “queued”. This will now put the animal in the appropriate queue (weaning or yearling). 5. Click on “Work Queues” at the bottom of your Work Menu to the left. 6. Click on “Weaning” if entering weaning data or “Yearling” for yearling data. Within the “Weaning or Yearling” queue, you are able to view your member ID, member name, etc. 7. Click on your “Go to this Queue”. You are now in the Weaning or Yearling screen. Enter the appropriate information. 8. Once everything is entered click on the “Validate” button to check for errors. Any errors will appear up by the animal’s registration number. 9. If there are NO Errors Click on “Commit Registry”. If there are Errors: Refer to the Error codes and return to step 8. Clicking on the “Commit to Registry” button is the final step in this process. If further assistance is needed, please contact the AGA office or go online to www.gelbvieh.org to view the weaning data entry video tutorial that can be found by clicking “Registry Service Tutorials” under the “Education Center” tab. MISSION: The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) secures, grows and responsibly distributes assets for research, member education and youth development to sustain and grow Gelbvieh genetics.

Creating Leaders for Tomorrow The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) helps to build a lasting future for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) and the Gelbvieh breed. One of the most important ways in which this is being accomplished is through the AGF’s dedication to youth development. By Megan Slater and William McIntosh ONE OF THE goals of the AGF is to support youth development and leadership by way of the scholarship program to ensure that there is a large pool of well educated, well trained young people to lead the AGA in the future. Every year the AGF awards up to $5,000 in scholarships during the annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic. AGJA members have the opportunity to be awarded with scholarship money through six scholarships including: $1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 Leness Hall Memorial Scholarship, $500 Rea Memorial Scholarship, $500 Mary Zillinger Cates Memorial Scholarship, up to two $750 AGJA Scholarships and one $500 AGJA scholarship. Scholarship recipients are selected upon a written applicant that consists of the student explaining their involvement in their community, both inside and outside agriculture as well as an essay as to how they are involved with the Gelbvieh breed, why they have chosen the breed and future plans for involvement within the Gelbvieh breed. The application must also be accompanied by two letters of recommendations. These applications are then reviewed and given to the most deserving applicants. Over the years, several thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to members of the AGJA. Several of these recipients are now active members within the Gelbvieh breed and the beef industry. In this article we will take a look at just a few of those past recipients and see the impact they are having on the beef industry. Justin Taubenheim, Amherst, Nebraska, was very active in the AGJA and is a past president of the junior board of directors. Taubenheim received a scholarship through the 36 | AUGUST 2015

AGJA in 2011. He attended Colby Community College shortly after graduating high school and was a member of the livestock judging team. After attending two years at Colby Community College, he transferred to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in animal science. “A college education increases opportunities and AGF scholarships help offset some of that expense,” says Justin. “Today, in any part of agriculture to be successful you have to have a very specialized skill set. By getting a bachelor’s in animal science I am able to bring more information to the family ranch, which allows me to play a bigger role in the operation.” Today, Justin and his wife Janelle, who also served on the AGJA Board of Directors, have purchased land and have added it to Justin’s family operation, Taubenheim Gelbvieh in Amherst, Nebraska. “I think it is cool how many kids have grown up in the AGJA and then they go on to be Gelbvieh breeders as adults,” says Justin, and he and Janelle did just that. Taubenheim Gelbvieh is currently the 10th largest registered Gelbvieh breeder in the United States and Justin is a third generation Gelbvieh breeder. “My goal is to continue to play a bigger role in Taubenheim Gelbvieh and to continue to provide our customers with the best bulls and service that we can.” Josh Phillips of Lathrop, Missouri, is another scholarship recipient who started in the Gelbvieh breed as a junior member in 1992. Throughout his time as a member of the AGJA, he served the association as a junior ambassador,

board member, president, and ex-officio.

150 head of both registered and commercial cattle.

“My time in the AGJA opened many doors and offered several opportunities,” says Phillips. He received an AGJA scholarship in 2000, which helped him to attend the University of Missouri (MU). “During my college years I was fortunate enough to meet and come to know Dr. Todd and Alisa Bickett of TJB Gelbvieh,” Phillips commented. Josh was offered an internship at TJB Gelbvieh in Chickamauga, Georgia where he was eventually offered the job of managing partner for the operation.

“The American Gelbvieh Foundation scholarship allows many Gelbvieh juniors, such as myself, the opportunity to continue our education and make connections for the future,” says Josh. “I am thankful to the Foundation and appreciate the opportunities my scholarship offered me”.

Currently, Josh is the general manager of Lathrop Feed & Grain based of out of Lathrop, Missouri, where he currently resides. The operation has four locations in northwest Missouri involving custom feed mixing, corn, soybean, milo, wheat, and specialized grain cleaning. They also buy non-GMO soybeans, milo and organic corn to clean and send overseas for niche markets such as organic livestock production, non-GMO and food grade tofu. He also owns and operates JGP Gelbvieh, which consists of approximately

JUNIOR NEWS AGJA Members Show off Communication Skills in Writing Contest Each year the AGJA holds a creative writing contest in conjunction with the annual junior classic. Essays were judged on content, grammar, and information. First place winners in each age division were chosen and will be rewarded by having their winning entries published in Gelbvieh World magazine. JUNIORS TOPIC: WHAT has working with cattle taught

you?

Intermediate Topic: Where do you see Gelbvieh cattle in your future? Senior Topic: Compare and contrast how genomic information has impacted the way producers select and market cattle. This month we will highlight the Junior Division Champion Cooper Beying from Leavenworth, Kansas. Read below his response to the writing topic. What has working with cattle taught you? Working with cattle has taught me many life skills that will help me as I move on in life. I have learned many important things that will help me in many areas of my life. Working with cattle has taught me responsibility. They need to be fed every day and night. I need to give my cattle a nice safe place to live. I need to make sure they get all of their shots and medicines to make sure they stay healthy. I need to make sure they have a water supply all year. In the winter I may have to put a heater in the tank or break the ice on the pond for them. Working with cattle has taught me patience. I have to be patient when waiting for my cows to calve. I have to be patient to make sure they have eaten all they want before I pull their feed pans. I have to be patient when I’m breaking a calf to lead. They need time to learn to be led and I need to be patient while they learn to calm down and trust me. Sometimes that takes a long time. Working with cattle has taught me flexibility. Sometimes, things don’t go as planned with cattle. Sometimes it rains too much and you can’t get the

46 | AUGUST 2015

trailer where you need it. Sometimes it takes longer to work cattle than you planned, and sometimes they just don’t do what you want them to do. A cow may have a calf earlier or later than expected and you have to change your plans to help take care of them.

Working with cattle has taught me to work with others. I work with my family to do the chores and handle the cattle. I work with my brother, cousins and friends at shows in contests and activities. I work with other breeders to promote the Gelbvieh breed. Finally, working with cattle has taught me to appreciate God’s creation and the opportunity to work with His creatures. I appreciate my family living on a farm so I can have cattle and learn from them. I am thankful that my family takes the time to go to shows and events where we can spend time working together doing something that we all love. I know I will continue to learn lots more from working with cattle in the years to come. I plan to raise Gelbvieh for a long time and continue to work with my family on the farm. FFF
