Scholarship Winners Announced at AGJA Southern Hospitality Classic

This year, six AGJA scholarships totaling $4,500 were awarded at the 2021 AGJA Southern Hospitality Classic awards banquet, held in Batesville, Mississippi.

Grace Vehige, Billings, Missiouri, daughter of Tom and Stacy Vehige, was selected to receive the $1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship. Grace will continute graduate school at Texas Tech University this fall in agricultural communications. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Arkansas, Grace spent the spring 2020 semester in Rome, Italy, at the University of Arkansas Rome Center as the rst Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences student. Along with her role as AGJA president, she was active in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Agriculture Future of America and Sigma Alpha-Iota Chapter agricultural sorority. Grace also received the $500 Patti Kendrick Memorial Scholarship. e $1,000 Lennes Hall Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Danielle Stock, Waukon, Iowa, daughter of Mark and Stacy Stock. Danielle is currently a senior at Iowa State University, majoring in animal science and genetics and maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Danielle hopes to work as a beef geneticist focusing on expected progeny di erences and genetic deformities. Danielle has served as the president, treasurer and secretary of the Iowa Junior Gelbvieh Association and led the organization of the 2021 AGJA Stars of the Barn Western Regional Show.

Madalynn Welsh, Franklin, Nebraska, daughter of Brian and Gina Welsh, received an AGJA $750 scholarship. Madalynn, an incoming freshman, will attend Auburn University in the fall and plans to major in applied biotechnology. A 4.0 student at Franklin Public High School, Madalynn was an active member of her local FFA chapter, serving as vice president and historian. Madalynn currently serves as the AGJA vice president and is beginning her second term on the AGJA board. Welsh hopes to become a licensed OB/GYN and fertility specialist. Madalynn also received the $500 Mary Zillinger Cates Memorial Scholarship presented by the Murray family of Oklahoma.

Baxter Lowe, Adrian, Missouri, son of Raymond and Melissa Lowe, also received a $750 AGJA scholarship. Baxter will attend Fort Scott Community College in the fall, majoring in veterinary sciences. A National Honor Society member at Adrian R-3, Baxter participated in football, wrestling and FFA. Baxter, a member of the AGJA since 2010, served as the intermediate ambassador in 2017-2018, and served as the treasurer of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Junior Association in 2018. Baxter hopes to use the knowledge he gains in college to help educate and improve breeding decisions made on the farm within their Gelbvieh cattle and Aussie puppies.

Cade Cameron, Danville, Iowa, son of Greg and Dawn Cameron, received a $500 AGJA scholarship. Cade currently attends Iowa State University majoring in agribusiness and agricultural communication and marketing.

Both the Kendrick and Zillinger Cates scholarships are awarded separate from the AGF-funded scholarships but are recognized during the AGJA junior classic banquet.
