18 mo.old fescue born & developed for the BIG Picture

Butler, MO

Welcome Beef Producers to B/F Cattle Company!

W E L C O M E

Welcome beef producers to our 10th Bi-Annual Bull Sale. As most of you know, we are a registered Balancer® operation located in West Central Missouri. Here, our cattle MUST make their living on endophyte infected fescue, just as nearly every commercial cattleman’s cows in the Fescue Belt are expected to do. We absolutely must look at the BIG picture. So, producing cows that can hack it begins with Balancer® Bulls who make the right kind of cows, who raise the hardiest calves, who THRIVE in Fescue Country and MAKE YOU $$! NO pampering and NO excuses will eventually build you a cow herd that is nearly drought proof! That’s assuming you buy your bulls from a producer who thinks and treats his cows the same way as you, and in the same environment. When you select from herds comprised of stock born, bred and developed in the Fescue Belt, you benefit from the superior genetic and environmental traits that are stacked generation after generation. Out of all of those advantages, I believe fertility trumps every other trait. And it takes very fertile cows to pass on top fertility bulls. Adding fertility while adding weaning weight, and maintaining yearling weight, is where we shine at B/F Cattle Co. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) continues ranking us as the top producer in all of fescue country for Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction honors. As a matter of fact, we have nearly twice as many cows recieiving this honor as the runner-up in fescue country. I don’t want to sound braggadocious, but we had 49 times more Dam of Merit cows in 2018 than the only Gelbvieh breeder in Missouri that registered more cows than us. We beleive it is important that you, our customers, understand that when you purchase a bull from B/F Cattle Co., you have over 20 years of evidence that deomonstrates how our nononsense program continues to significantly out pace other breeders in the fescue region for maternal integrity and male and female fertility.

#1 Missouri Breeder 2015 - 2018 Dam of Merit & Dam of Distinction

The good news continues. You see, year after year, we also gather evidence that our steers are excelling in feedlot trials for feed efficiency, daily gain, yield grade and percent yield. At B/F Cattle Co., we are truly trying to produce the complete package -- one that thrives in fescue country and MAKES YOU MONEY. Thanks for your interest,

Brett Foster

Majority ownership of 51% reserves the right to cancel all semen sales if seller or buyer sees something genetically perpetuated that the beef industry would be better off without. Unlike much of the A.I. industry, I would cut the head off of my favoirte herd bull if I found out tomorrow he was siring long toed, bad attitudes or bad uddered females. We sometimes must set marketing aside to truly move the beef industry forward.

In Lot #1, we’ve hit our target full center in a moderate framed bull with superb growth, ample thickness, sound feet, EASY FLESHING, a gentle disposition and above average carcass traits. Perhaps better yet is the fact that he is out of a stellar cow family! The grandam is a Dam of Merit. Great Grandam is a Dam of Distinction. We develop our bulls much differently than most. The only time these bulls are in a dry lot is the week that they are weaned. We grow these bulls on big, open pastures where the shade is a quarter of a mile away from a water source. This makes for poor daily gain, but builds some of the most rugged and athletic bulls you will find anywhere. “No Bull”

A moderate framed, very easy fleshing, good growth, super maternal package. He started at just 61 lbs. and went on to a WWR 104! He is out of a Dam of Merit cow that has a 349 day calving interval on first seven calves, with a WWR 107, YWR 110. The granddam was also a Dam of Merit. (Note: Although he had a 61 lb. birth weight, I would hesitate to breed him to virgin heifers, because of pedigree.)

Note: Lots 29 & 30 will sell between Lots 8 & 9

Another great growth -- PLUS maternal package. This bull proves his potential with a WWR 111 and YWR 104. A very solid dam stands behind him as well. Proof on the Plate that we grow them with the BIG picture in mind.

We got three cuttings out of our hay in 2019. Like that grass that just kept coming, here’s another opportunity for you to take home a good growth bull with a YWR 103.

This DERRINGER 404B son has good growth with a YWR 101. He’s out of B/F 2987W, a rock solid cow that holds a 364 day calving interval on eight calves. Her daughters average a pelvic measurement of 186. And she has a great udder.

Brett’s NO BULL Guarantee

“No Bull”

We do not sell any bulls before they are 18 months of age. A combination of the development practices and genetics, lets me say with confidence that these bulls will breed more cows for more years than most any bulls out there. That being said, we cut any bull that we would not use on our own commercial cows.

I pulled this stud out when he was a yearling to breed cows, which would have been last fall and then again this summer. He is moderate framed and extremely gentle. He has super growth potential with a WW EPD in top 10% and YW EPD top 5%. Best of all, he is out of a long line of Dam of Merit, Dam of Distinction females.

Another moderate framed stud that I used as a yearling and again this summer. He is super thick with tons of capacity. He ranks in WW EPD top 10%, YW EPD top 10 %, MARB top 10%, FPI top 15%. He is out of one of the most powerful cows that I have ever owned, yet she is very moderate framed. This bull should be a guaranteed female maker.

Note: Lots 29 & 30 will sell between Lots 8 & 9 Finding Balance The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Edge Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer® offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. Balancer® Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer® animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer® cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus.

Brett’s NO BULL Guarantee Without chasing carcass, we simply put a little upward pressure on it to develop a herd of Balancers® which are unparalleled in the Gelbvieh breed for carcass merit. And we do incorporate DNA technology, with a strong emphasis on tenderness. “I view carcass traits like many other traits that are measured by EPD’s. If you shoot for the middle of the road, you will probably avoid wrecking a good set of cows!”

Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail. source: https://www.gelbvieh.org/about/edge

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer® EPDs*

EPD Definitions: Listed below are

the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published. the EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Maternal traits: Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higer percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traits: Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Carcass traits: Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade

score, hich is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency traits: Dry Matter intake (DMI): Represents the

average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE. Developmental Duplication (DD): is a simply inherited recessive genetic condition that can sometimes cause animals to be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb. This abnormality has incomplete penetrance meaning even a homozygous recessive animal, DD affected, may not express the condition. However a DDA animal will pass on the recessive allele to every one of its offspring. Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

*All catalog data based on averages available at time of printing.
