Welcome Beef Producers to B/F Cattle Company!

C O M E

Welcome cattlemen to our 10th bi-annual bull sale. I am very humbled and honored that the Good Lord has given my family the drive, passion, knowledge and opportunity to be a part of such a fulfilling business. I am aware that very few men my age have had the privilege to be self-employed as a cow/ calf operator for most of their lives. The upside is the freedom to make your own decisions, be your own boss and choose your own direction. That being said, I feel that such freedom also leaves room for some mistakes, and nobody to blame but yourself. But, the lessons that stick in one’s memory the most are the things a guy did wrong the first time! And I have done plenty of them! Most importantly, I learned NOT to repeat them! Which leads me to talking cows. I have ALWAYS been focused on making the best female herd possible for my environment, while keeping a close eye on the end product for the packer. We’re looking for calving ease, fertility, structural correctness and disposition, along with carcass merit. And we want it all in an easy-keeping, can-thrive-on-fescue package. While most Missouri breeders use fescue toxicity as an excuse not to cull cows, I want to see which cows can thrive on it! And I’ll cull the rest. Our cowherd receives grass hay in winter and mineral when I think about it. This also goes for our heifers raising their first calves. There is no sense to pamper them just to get the inferior ones bred back. The quicker they fall out, the quicker you will build a truly profitable cow herd! To get that kind of female, it takes the right kind of bulls. I have learned “the hard way” that if you want your cows to be profitable grazing fescue in hot, humid Missouri, your bull genetics must be raised in the same environment, with the same lack of pampering. And rest assured that this is not east to find IN ANY BREED! This is not how most seedstock producers look at things. That becomes evident in the amount of northern and western bulls that are brought in through A.I. or physically by so-called cooperator herds. If you want to live with your head in the clouds, simply buy bulls from a seedstoock supplier that has their’s there too. Their kind of genetics are what keep the feed stores and A.I. companies in business. We are here to help keep YOU in business. Thank You for Attending Our Sale

Brett Foster P.S. Keep in mind that if any bull cannot hold his body conditon while breeding cows. He will make some hard keeping daughters. And vise-versa!

If you’re looking for moderate framed, easy fleshing genetics built for the long haul, these first three bulls are out of the right kind of female. F459W is that kind of cow! Plus, she has a gentle disposition and perfect udder. This Dam of Merit four years running has a Weaning Wt. Ration (WWR) on her first six calves of 106 and Yearling Wt. Ration (YWR) on six at 102. Her daughters have averaged pelvic areas of 190. She also holds a 366 day calving interval. All while surviving on fescue! Her daughters are awesome! If I had the choice, I would take 400 cows just like her over having the best EPDs in the country. Lots 1 and 2 are ET out of this amazing dam and lot 3 is her natural born calf.

Maternal Sister to Lots 1-3 BFGF Z4592 AMGV1239232 09/13/12 The AGA GE-EPDs emblem on lots indicates genetically enhanced EPDS, a source of information to make an animal’s EPD estimations more accurate. Phenotypes such as birth weight, weaning weight, and calving ease are still needed to make GE EPDs as accurate as possible.

A moderate framed, super thick, super slick haired calf that excelled for WWR and maternal. His dam is what I would consider to be the perfect size and type for fescue country. She has 106 WWR & 104 YWR, and on first four calves a 373 day calving interval. She is Dam Of Merit with a perfect udder. Her daughters are avg. 194 pelvic area.

No creep, no implants ... Just Great Genetics

For those of you wondering what I mean when I talk about moderate framed, easy fleshing, low input genetics...My dad has used B/F genetics for over 10 years. In 2017, he ran 45 cows and 10 first calf heifers -- all spring calvers. He has typcial K-31 fescue pastures. He feeds NO supplemental feed whatsoever. Not even mineral. Only white “No Bull” salt blocks. He does feed good grass hay in the winter (approx. one bale for 50 head per day). His calves are born February and March. NO creep feed. No implants. Dad weaned in midNovember, fed good grass hay free choice and only three pounds per head, per day of a corn/DDG mix. And when we sent them to the feedlot Dec. 12, 2017, the steers weighted 731 pounds! Not too shabby for what little money and labor that was thrown at them. And on preg check, only three opens out of 55 head! Over time, you can beat the feed bills and eliminate the open cows with the right genetics. Lot

An excellent choice for someone looking to make flawless females. His dam is very moderate and very productive. She was a first calf heifer in the spring. I decided to see if my spring calvers were fertile enough to move forward to make fall calvers out of them. And she did it, calving in September! Her interval is 333 with a WWR 103 and YWR 103. Keep in mind, these cows had to move forward, eating grass hay and mineral only! She has a great udder and disposition.

The most dependable heifer bull I have ever used. We have calved over 60 first calf heifers thus far and haven’t pulled a calf. His calves have plenty of growth and should have good carcass merit. We will get some carcass data back this summer on his calves. His daughters are very stylish! He is also a vigorous breeder. In fall of 2016, as a 2-year-old, he bred 44 out of 47 heifers in a 50-day breeding window. As a 3-year-old, I currently have him on 67 heifers. At the time of writing this, he’d been in for 45 days and there didn’t seem to be any still cycling.

At 3 1/2 years old, he measured a 5 frame. He sires moderate birth weight, extremely good weaning and yearling weights. He is extremely easy fleshing as his daughters also seem to be. He has good carcass to top it all off. First 21 calves to go to packing plant by him went 86% choice, 23% YG1, 62% YG2, 14% YG3 and 0% YG4. 17 Steers - avg. live wt = 1445 / CW 924. 4 Heifers - avg. live wt = 1240 / CW 826. Pretty good carcass results for a 5-frame, female maker!

This herd sire is very moderate framed, super thick, docile and has great structure. We’re seeing some extra muscle shape which is hard to do in a maternal package. DJS DERRINGER 96X - Sire to 404B

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer® EPDs* EPD Definitions: Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Maternal traits:

Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higer percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traits:

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Carcass traits:

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number is more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield

grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency traits: Dry Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day

consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.

Indexes:

Terminal Cross: Used for traits other than maternal. Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

NO BULL! We’re in this together to produce beef that makes us money in the pasture and on the grid The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Edge Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.

Balancer® Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail. source: https://www.gelbvieh.org/about/edge
