April 4, 2020 1:00 p.m. Butler, MO #1 Missouri Breeder 2015-2019 Dam of Merit & Dam of Distinction
Bonus Consignment of 20 Open Yearling Heifers backed by B/F Cattle Co. genetics
W E L C O M E
Welcome to B/F Cattle Co. We are a BalancerŽ (Gelbvieh x Angus) operation located in the western edge of fescue country. We strive to produce the most efficient, hardy, fertile cows and bulls possible. I believe to be efficient with our resources that our females need to be moderate framed and easy fleshing. Unlike most moderate framed seedstock herds, we are proving that you can have high milking cows, that raise big calves that excel for carcass traits without wrecking your cow herd. We are not willing to give up performance to have moderate size. If done right, the two are compatible. This may sound simplistic, but the reality is that the Good Lord (before I knew I needed Him) created me to look at things differently than most of the leaders within the cattle industry. It has taken 25 years of hard knocks and refusing to follow the mainstream genetics and trends to get our cow herd to where it is today, which is one of the most fescue tolerant cow herds in the country (of any breed)! We grow our bulls in a pasture environment to encourage athleticism, while only supplementing with feed to encourage a little extra performance. There may be a little less gain on a daily basis, but these bulls are developed with longevity in mind. Many producers use our bulls until they are 8 to 10 years old. If you are worried about growth, there’s no need to be. The culls who go to a feedlot typically gain 4 lbs./day with a 5.5 dry matter feed conversion. Remember -- those are the culls! This particular group of bulls started the summer as a group of 155 head. We have cut and sorted them down to around 75. For all the technology and tools at our disposal today, the castration knife is still the most under-utilized tool by the seedstock industry. On behalf of Libby, our girls and myself, we want to thank you for attending our sale. Let us know if we can help you in anyway on sale day or down the road.
God Bless,
Brett Foster

JOY JOY JOY
down in your herd
This stud is consigned by Gary Felger, Yellow Dog Gelbvieh. If you think it was easy for me to start our sale with someone else’s bull, you would be wrong. However, this has been one of my personal favorites for the last year. To begin, he is slick haired, good footed, big nutted, is extremely quiet natured and is very easy fleshing, with top end growth. Behind the scenes, he has top notch carcass and maternal. His Dam holds a 370-day calving interval on her first theee calves with a Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) 106 and Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR) of 108. She has a great attitude and udder. YDG 820F’s Granddam is a Dam of Merit, holding a 359-day calving interval with a 102 WWR. This is the first B/F MR JOY son to be offered to the public. The MR JOY daughters are truly awesome! Easy fleshing, excellent growth and pelvics averaging 184 make his daughters a JOY to keep in the herd.

Another super stout, super gentle B/F MR JOY son. With a 111 WRR and 108 YWR, he will add growth to most any set of cows. He is stacked for matrnal with his Dam boasting a 110 WRR adn 107 YWR. She has great udder, attitude and structure, as does his Granddam whose heifers are averaging 202 pelvic score. The Great Granddam is a 4-time Dam of Merit that is still going strong. She holds a 343-day calving interval on eight calves with a WWR 103/YWR 101 and pelvic score of 184. Need more history: How about a Great, Great Granddam that is a Dam of Distinction and holds a 350-day calving interval on 10 calves with a 102 WWR and daughters who average 180 pelvic score. But wait...there’s MORE! The Great, Great, Great Granddam gave us 11 calves by her 12th birthday, holding a 100 WWR and YWR 105, with pelvic score 186. This kind of maternal excellance is what you can expect by stacking B/F genetics for as many generations as one can!!!!

Here is yet another of B/F MR JOY son that is super thick, docile and easy fleshing. I honestly think this guy would stay in good condition eating broom sage. His Dam is super easy fleshing, with a picture perfect udder. Her daughters are averaging 109 for YWR and 185 for pelvic score.

B/F A8203 OF 820, the Dam to Full Brothers in the next three Lots (4, 5 and 6), is a stellar six year old cow with a great udder, disposition and structure. She’s held a 369-day calving interval while flushing embryos approximately 60 days after calving the last two years, and still rebreeds early in the season. Sporting a 101 WWR and 100 YWR with pelvic scores averaging 190 on five daughters, she’s earned the Dam of Merit honor for the past two consecutive years. Her Grandam is truly an awesome cow who holds a 369-day calving interval on eight calves, while flushing between calving and breeding season. Her WWR is 104 and her YWR is 103 and she scores 196 for pelvic.

A good, solid bull for growth and carcass with MARB in top 20%. His maternal traits are thanks to a Dam who holds a 368-day calving interval while flushing between calving and breeding seasons. She has a 102 WWR on first eight calves, along with a great udder and attitude. Pelvic scores on her daughters are averaging 193. She was awarded Dam of Merit five years in a row and has now become a Dam of Distinction. Best of all, her daughters are truly awesome. A super thick, musle packed bull that started at 73 lbs and went on to a 109 WWR. He is super docile. His Dam has done a wonderful job, holding a calving interal of 370 days on eight calves. Her daughters average a pelvic score of 176. She is very easy fleshing with a great udder. This bull does have a blue eye from a pinkeye scar, however he is so extremely docile that I cannot see that it is much of an issue.

A top growth and carcass bull. Where it truly counts, this EASY KEEPER son shines: Top 10% WW, 20% YW, 15% Heifer Pregnancy, 10% Stayability and 25% MARB. His Dam holds a 368-day calving interval on her first seven calves witha WWR 101 and YW 109. Eight daughters pelvic average is 195. She is a larger cow than I think is ideal, however she has done a top notch job.

This stud has been a standout ever since he was a month old. He posted a WWR of 111, YWR 106. His EPD’s are top 20% for WW, CW, FPI; top 15% for YW, PG30 and MARB; and top 25% for STAY. However, for me, that would all just be numbers on paper if not for the fact that he is out of an awesome cow family. His Dam was awarded the Dam of Merit onor her first year of eligiblity. She holds a 364-day calving interval on her first four calves and a WWR 108/ YWR 103. Her own pelvic area was 179.5. Beautiful udder and attitude. The Granddam is a stellar cow, as well as his Dam of Distinction Great Granddam.

Here’s a high growth, high marbling ET bull out of one of the easiest fleshing cow families I have ever owned. They are moderate A top growth bull with a 114 YWR. Dam is a bit more frame framed with grat udders and fertility. Dam holds a 344-day calving than I prefer, however, she has done a solid job. Hold a 356-day interval on her first seven calves with a 111 WWR / 1010 YWR. calving interval on six calves. She has a very nice udder. Daughters are averaging 177 pelvic. One of my favorite yearling heifers is the natural calf out of this cow and MR EASY KEEPER. Lot

Top growth at 115 WWR and 110 YWR. Top 15% for WW, 20% for YW. He’s out of a five-time Dam of Merit that holds a 341-day calving interval on seven calves and a 110 WRR / 106 YWR. Pelvic score 176. This stud does however have a little more hair than I would like to see in fescue country.
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

A top notch growth & carcass bull with a YWR 111. His Yearling EPD is top 15% and MARB top 35%. F783’s Dam is a good calf raiser, even if she doesn’t have as much eye appeal. I would use this bull simply to add growth to a terminal cross program.

“No Bull”
A good growth, great carcass, great maternal package. His EPDs for HP, PG30 and STAY are all top 15% in the breed. Take note of his Carcass potential with CW top 20%, REA 25% and MARB 35%. His Dam holds a 363-day calving interval on her first three calves, while flushing between calving and then breeding back. Her WWR is 101 and YWR 106. Her own pelvic score was 204. She is easy fleshing, with good udder and structure. Disposition is as good as it gets! I chose this cow to be part of our donor program not only becasue I like what I see in her, but the longevity in this cow family is amazing. Her Dam is 13.5 years old and has raised 12 calves so far, with a 366-day calving interval. The Granddam was 18 before she came up open, due to her raising twins her last year. Wow -- 18 calves in 18 years! We all need those kind of working cows!

Commercial Heifers Bonus Consignment of 20 Open Yearling Heifers from Nitchals Farm backed by B/F Cattle Co. genetics
All heifers are virgin, calf hood vaccinated (OCV) for brucellosis and pelvic measured. The pelvics measure from 172 to 212. At least two generations of B/F bulls pad their pedigrees. Consigned by Nitchals Farms of Appleton City, Ryan says that they struggled for years to keep enough good heifers to replace the cull cows. After using top end B/F bulls for the last seven years, he says the amount of cows to cull has dropped significantly and the amount of top-end heifers to make replacements has grown. It’s our goal at B/F Cattle Co. to provide the type of genetics that make this kind of economical change possible for every bull customer.

This son of B/F All In 9720 was Lot #1 and High Selling Bull of our 2018 Fall Maternal Integrity Bull Sale and went home with Rick & Liz Bailey of R & L Farms, Montrose, MO. B/F Cattle Company has retained semen interest on this all-around stud. He is slick haired, has tons of muscle, guts and nuts and is super docile. Take note of his Tenderness score and the inspiration for his name. It is a rare and impressive achievement to score a 10! He has everything going for him including the fact that he was out of a flawless four year old Dam of Merit with a WWR 105 / YWR 101 and actual pelvic area of 198. She has great structure, attitude and udder, and her first two calves averaged weaning ratios of 106.
The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Edge
Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.
Balancer®
Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects 21 of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail. source: https://www.gelbvieh.org/about/edge

Heifer bull deluxe! With over 140 calves out of first calf heifers, WE HAVE ASSISTED ZERO CALVES! That is nearly unheard of for any heifer bull of any breed. His progeny’s birth weights are averaging 66 lbs., with WWR and YWR still hitting 100. His daughters pelvic measure on average 183. Sons of Total Package perform respectably for growth and have top end carcass. He passes along impressive EPD profiles for BW and CED, staying in the top 1%, and feedlot performance reflected by FPI rankings in the top 10%. His daughters are truly awesome. They are smooth made, with great structure and uddes. They are beautiful young cows that also calve easy. A bull that is this low in birth weight very seldom leaves such fertile, easy fleshing and easy calving daughters. But total package delivers the goods. Sire to Lots: 41-47, 65-73

This sire has been able to hold his own for performance. Bulls by him are docile, big nutted, with good guts and butts. His BW’s are averaging 77 lbs. His first daughters averaged 195 pelvic. And they seem to be overall very nice heifers. No calving assists on any. Sire to Lots: 26, 32, 35, 39, 58-59, 61 B/F MR JOY C1159 This stud, purchased by Gretzinger Farms of Urich, MO., at our Fall 2017 Sale is a perfect example for why we retain Half Semen Interest on every bull we sell. He not only takes a good picture, His calves are some of my favorite. We have AI’d several cows to him with no disappointments. Calves are docile, slick haired, growthy and deliver impressive carcass merit.
CCCJ MR SILVER 366A Sire to B/F MR JOYC1159 & B/F TANK D321
His Dam is currently still working at 11 years old, and his yearling daughters seem like awesome prospects with pelvic scores averaging 184. The calves are all averaging 79.4 lbs. in BW, with a WWR 102 and YWR 102. We have not had to assist any calves at birth,

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer® EPDs* EPD Definitions: Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.
Maternal traits:
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higer percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Growth traits:
*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.
Carcass traits:
Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number is more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE.
Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.
Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield
grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
Efficiency traits: Dry Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day
consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
Indexes:
Terminal Cross: Used for traits other than maternal. Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.
