Welcome Beef Producers to B/F Cattle Company!
W E L C O
M E
Welcome, Cattlemen, to our 2018 Maternal Integrity Fall Bull Sale. For those of you that don’t know us, B/F Cattle Company is a Balancer (Gelbvieh / Angus cross) operation that sits in the heart of fescue country. Our momma cows must do their jobs eating fescue and whatever else mother nature is willing to provide throughout the growing season. During the winter months, I unroll grass hay enough for each cow to eat for approximately four to five hours each day. We feed a limited amount of mineral, but NO protein tubs, lick tanks, silage, cubes or anything else that most seedstock producers feed to achieve maximum performance. Our way of feeding cows ensures that any hard keepers, low milkers and sub-par performance or low fertility cows go to town verses raising a bull for you. We are very aware of what it takes to thrive as a commercial cow/calf producer. And, regardless of the cattle market, I feel that moderate framed, easy fleshing cows, bred from generations of high fertility and milk, are the ingredients to acheive success. Don’t mistake moderate frame and easy fleshing for low performance. We expect top-end weaning weights (with no creep). And our last set of steers in the feedlot averaged a gain of 3.98 lbs/day with a dry matter conversion of 5.36. That will keep the buyers of your feeder calves coming back for more! Those steers made around $138 a head more than they would have sending them to the sale barn as calves. I have always been focused on making the best female herd possible for my environment, while keeping a close eye on the end product for the packer. We’re looking for calving ease, fertility, structural correctness and dispostion, along with carcass merit. And we want it all in an easy-keeping, can-thrive-on-fescue package. To get that kind of female, it takes the right kind of bulls -- bulls that are raised in the same environment, with the same lack of pampering. Welcome, Cattlemen, to real-world genetics that will keep you in business.
Thank You for Attending Our Sale

ALL OF OUR BULLS WERE RAISED BY DAMS BORN & RAISED AND WHO HAVE MADE THEIR LIVING, ON FESCUE.
B/F GENETICS ARE BUILT TO THRIVE IN FESCUE COUNTRY!
10
This herd bull prospect is an all-around stud. He is slick haired, has tons of muscel, guts and nuts and is super docile. Take note of his Tenderness score -to achieve a ten is impressive! His dam is a very nice 4-year-old, with great structure, attitude and udder. She has maintained a 334 day calving interval on first three calves. First two averaged weaning ratio of 106. Third calf hasn’t been weaned as of writing this, but also looks to be a stud.
The AGA GE-EPDs emblem on lots indicates genetically enhanced EPDS, a source of information to make an animal’s EPD estimations more accurate. Phenotypes such as birth weight, weaning weight, and calving ease are still needed to make GE EPDs as accurate as possible.

A super thick, muscle packed, easy fleshing bull with super maternal. Dam has WWR 104 / YWR 102 and maintains a 366 day calving interval on seven natural calves while flushing embryos in between. NO creep, NO implants... Just Great Genetics For those of you wondering what I mean when I talk about moderate framed, easy fleshing, low input genetics...My dad has used B/F genetics for over 10 years. In 2017, he ran 45 cows and 10 first calf heifers -- all spring calvers. He has typical K-31 fescue pastures. He feeds NO supplemental feed whatsoever. Not even mineral. Only white salt blocks. He does feed good grass hay in the winter (approximately one bale for 50 head per day). His calves are born February and March. NO creep feed. NO implants. Dad weaned in mid-November, fed good grass hay free choice and only three pounds per head, per day of a corn/DDG mix. And when we sent them to the feedlot Dec. 12, 2017, the steers weighed 731 pounds! Not too shabby for what little money and labor that was thrown at them. And on preg check, only three opens out of 55 head! Over time, you can beat the feed bills and eliminate the open cows with the right genetics.

The truest heifer bull I have ever used! To date, his calves have averaged 65.7 pounds. I’ve calved over 60 heifers with no assist. I will calve another 60+ bred to him this fall. I’m expecting the same results. He’s a very vigorous breeder, which he hopefully passes on to his sons.

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer® EPDs*
EPD Definitions: Listed below
are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published. the EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.
Maternal traits:
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higer percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Growth traits: Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.
Carcass traits: Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade
score, hich is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
Efficiency traits: Dry Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day
consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected. Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE. Developmental Duplication (DD): is a simply inherited recessive genetic condition that can sometimes cause animals to be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb. This abnormality has incomplete penetrance meaning even a homozygous recessive animal, DD affected, may not express the condition. However a DDA animal will pass on the recessive allele to every one of its offspring. Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

no bull! We’re in this together to produce beef that makes us money in the pasture and on the grid The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Edge Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.
Balancer® Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail. source: https://www.gelbvieh.org/about/edge
