B/F Cattle Co. & Cleland Cattle Co. Maternal Integrity Gelbvieh & Balancer Bull Sale

Welcome Beef Producers to B/F Cattle Company!

W E L C O M E

Welcome to B/F Cattle Co. For those of you that don’t know us, we are a Gelbvieh & Balancer® seedstock operation that resides on the western edge of fescue country. That is important to note because I am a firm believer that we must have cattle that are built for the envirnomnet in which they are expected to make a living. If we turn a blind eye to this (as most seedstock operations in this country have), we cannot supplement these cows enough to ever make them truly profitable. Many years ago I tried throwing all the calories and supplements that I could at a cow herd -many of which were not designed for fescue success. I learned very quickly that the only way these supplemented cows could be profitable was to sell over-priced bulls. Nothing a good marketing plan couldn’t solve, right? However, the reality was that bulls I would produce out of these pampered cows would not render profitable females for their future owners, unless they also pampered their entire cow herd. Those kind of cow herds are very seldom profitable! During our pampered cow phase, we noticed cow families that could hold their own with no supplements and very, very limited mineral. Those are the money makers for me and my bull buyers. Our entire herd is now built around this low-input philosophy. But fescue hardiness must come from both sides of the pedigree. Half will very seldom work for fescue country. Keep in mind also, that low-input cows from outside of fescue territory will very seldom work here. I have heard from multiple vets about pregnancy checks of 30% to 40% opens last fall. In case you have never put a pencil to it, anything over 10% open makes it hard to make money in today’s calf and killer cow market. These terrible conception rates are rarely due to a lack of management or radical weather -- the factors typically blamed. Most of these cows were simply not made for this environment. One of the most important things I have learned (the hard way, of course) about bull selection is that the producer who is going to keep females, needs to look at more than EPDs. I’ll go so far as to say EPDs should be the last criteria on your list for selecting a herd sire. The data is simply not accurate enough to base your sole decision on what will affect your cow herd for the next 10 to 20 years. The “experts” in their university salaried think tanks would go broke trying to run a large herd in the real world while taking their own advice. Anyone who advises Missouri’s producers to select for EPDs as if they are gospel, promotes AI-ing your cows to sires from outside of fescue country and promotes using long-acting wormers which leads to resistance -- Well, these people know nothing about genetics for this environment! Look at how someone is making their living with cattle before you heed their advice.

Thank You for Attending Our Sale

Semen Interest: Sellers will be retaining 51% semen

interest on every bull sold. Buyer will have full possession and salvage value of purchased lot(s). Semen rights will only affect the very few bulls that we determine we would like to use back in our herd(s). Majority ownership of 51% reserves the right to cancel all semen sales if seller or buyer sees something genetically perpetuated that the beef industry would be better off without. Unlike much of the A.I. industry, I would cut the head off of my favoirte herd bull if I found out tomorrow he was siring long toed, bad attitudes or bad uddered females. We sometimes must set marketing aside to truly move the beef industry forward.

Pictured left - FY 9731 HIGHTIME is the dam of Lots 1-5. Her daughters pelvic score on average 192. She holds a 368 day calving interval on six natural calves, even though we flushed embryos out of her three weeks prior to breeding season each of the last three years. Yes, our donor cows still raise a calf every year, while flushing them! This is nearly unheard of in the seedstock world. She has been a Dam of Merit every year of eligibility. Her grandam held a WWR of 110 and YWR of 107 on seven natural calves.

“No Bull”

The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Edge

Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.

Balancer®

Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences (EPDs). Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail.

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer® EPDs* EPD Definitions: Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Maternal traits:

Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higer percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traits:

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Carcass traits:

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number is more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield

grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency traits: Dry Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day

consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.

Indexes:

Terminal Cross: Used for traits other than maternal. Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

*All catalog data based on averages available at time of printing.
