Sale to be held at Marvin & Mae Maude ranch 15849 Lower Spring Creek Road Hermosa, SD 57744 (30 miles southeast of Rapid City, 20 miles south of New Underwood, 20 miles northeast of Hermosa) Terms and Conditions:
We will keep the bulls free until April 1, but this is at the buyer’s risk. While we do everything in our power to keep the bulls healthy and growing, things happen. To protect our buyers and us financially, we will split the cost of mortality and loss of use insurance on all bulls. This protects against death and injury. Loss of use insurance will be placed on the bulls after they have been semen checked and pass a breeding soundness exam.
We sell the bulls as guaranteed breeders. We do breeding soundness exams and semen checks in February/March. If a bull doesn’t pass his semen check prior to delivery in April, we’ll return your purchase price in full or work with you to exchange a bull of like quality.
For more information on any of the bulls, please drop us a line: Lori Maude, 303-809-3789 Marvin Maude, 605-255-4448 Julie Maude, 605-381-2803 Michael Lehrkamp, 605-870-0045
Payment is expected on sale day. If you need other arrangements, please visit with us.
CJ&L Livestock 4th Annual Bull Sale • Dec. 16, 2017 • Hermosa, SD Dear Cattlemen, It is once again time to gear up for our annual bull sale. The cattle have thrived this year despite the dry conditions they faced. We pray that everyone receives abundant moisture in 2018—it is certainly needed. A new addition to this year’s sale is a select offering of registered open heifers. All of the heifers have been haltered and several were shown this summer. If in the market for a show heifer or just some solid replacement females, we picked the top end to offer. We are also excited to have a guest consignor in this year’s sale, Paige Lehrkamp. Michael and Kori Lehrkamp and their kids Paige, Grady and Maddie, are running their registered cattle with us. Look for more from the Lehrkamps in the future as the girls expand their Gelbvieh and Balancer herd. Who knows, Grady might throw a Hereford in the sale some year down the road just to add a new dimension. We use a silent auction format. Each bull will have a bid sheet with a floor bid set. If you are interested in a bull then simply raise the bid during the sale from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The final bids will be collected at 1:30 p.m. The floor bid raises by $100 at the conclusion of the sale and any bulls not sold will be available private treaty. So if you are interested, make sure to bid during the sale. You won’t find fat, over-conditioned bulls here. They have genetics that would allow for much higher ADG, but we simply don’t push the bulls since we want the feet and legs to hold up. Dad is a commercial cattle producer at heart and he develops the bulls the way he wants to buy them. We feed a cracked corn/distiller’s grain mix with 16% ration enhancer pellets. They also have access to ground hay/triticale and free choice alfalfa/grass mix hay. The heifers are on a similar program. All of them have been DNA tested free from bovine viral diarrhea (BVD). We will keep the bulls free of charge until April 1, 2018. Please make sure to read the terms and conditions in the back of the book. We will semen check bulls in February/March and continue to develop the bulls so they are ready to go to work for you next spring. Even if you aren’t in the market for a bull, we invite you to come Dec. 16th, enjoy lunch and learn more about our program. We love to talk about Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle, and how they can work in so many operations. If you are unable to make the sale, we can make arrangements for you to view the cattle early and handle your bids confidentially on sale day. We look forward to seeing you Dec. 16th and showing you this year’s calf crop,
Marvin and Mae • Lori • Julie, Carl and Clayton • LeAnn and Jayden

What do all those numbers mean? Genomically-enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs), sometimes noted as GE-EPDs, are EPDS that incorporate the animal’s DNA genomic profile with the animal’s actual performance and its sire and dam EPDs. GE-EPDs give a more accurate assessment what that animal with contribute to its future progeny. We have provided GE-EPDs on all of the bulls (except where noted), but not on the heifers. Calving ease direct (CED) Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Birth weight (BW) Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW) Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling weight (YW) Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk (Milk) The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Stayability (ST) Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Ribeye area (REA) Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB) Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
