The DecisionMaking Process to Seedstock Production By Scott Starr
T
his time of the year most producers have their spring calves weaned and started on feed, and cows pregnancy checked and back to winter range or cornstalks. Late fall and early winter seem to be the busiest times of the year as we are all trying to get everything done to prepare for bad weather on days with fewer daylight hours. Plus, we have to work around the holidays. Seedstock breeders have a lot of decisions to make regarding our upcoming bull calf crop, e.g., how much to feed so they work for our commercial customers and where and when to advertise. We must also analyze our calf crop and think about future genetics to make our product better for our customers. Two of the main things I contemplate through the fall and winter are marketing and sources for new genetics. Marketing our current calf crop is obviously important to our viability as a seedstock supplier. We must pay bills and the seedstock business has a lot of extra costs that many other sectors of our business don’t have. The most often talked about is DNA testing. This is considered a cost, but should be looked at as a positive from a marketing and scientific data standpoint. Most commercial producers heavily utilize the DNA test for coat color. But don’t forget the uLD, LD, and HD tests that the more advanced commercial producers are seeking, especially as they learn more about their value. Commercial producers will always like more guesswork taken out of the equation, so it is imperative that breeders provide as much information as possible without overdoing the amount of data in the catalog. Knowing our customers and their needs will help us with advertising and breeding decisions. Know the strengths of your program and what you can
6 | DECEMBER 2018
offer to your customers. Tell them about your program in print, on your website and in social media advertising. You must tell the story of how you can help advance the commercial programs your genetics enter. Also knowing your customers’ needs will help your next genetic selection decisions for the advancement of your own program. Utilize artificial insemination (AI) as much as possible on proven bulls to excel your program to meet the needs of the commercial programs. Highly proven bulls may not have the hype of a new hot yearling bull, but they will never leave you with an inconsistent cowherd or mistakes an unproven bull may bring to the table. Commercial producers want a consistent calf crop without outliers. If all their steer calves can sell in one cut, they are dollars ahead in the long run. This is especially true for the smaller producers that might only have 50 or fewer steer calves. A large producer could have 200+ steers in five different cuts and make them all look alike. So the smaller producers have a larger task of making their calf crop look consistent. The smaller producer is the largest group of producers in the United States, so we must really work hard as suppliers to make our product better than any other. Angus had an advantage because they made them all black and polled. Charolais has their color that sets them apart as well, so Gelbvieh and Balancer® producers need to have the most consistent product based on type and kind. Quality will always be popular no matter the times we are in! As seedstock producers we must get out and find as many sire groups of calves as possible. We are the start of the genetic supply chain that ultimately ends up on a consumer’s plate. I personally attend bull sales to look at sire groups. When I can, I try to look through pastures of calves still on the cows to see differences as well. When we AI, we sort off calves and I score all of them without looking at tags. Then we tabulate for sire groups and breed cows accordingly. There are many other ways for true genetic advancement, but I don’t think it is done by simply going through an AI catalog and choosing the bull on the first page with a big picture. Talk to your AI rep because they see a lot of cattle in real-world operations and can provide input needed to move your operations forward. “The best revenge is massive success.” D
news GW AGA Releases Docility EPD
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) recently introduced the new docility expected progeny difference (EPD) through the IGS multibreed genetic evaluation powered by BOLT. The addition of docility EPD further strengthens the lineup of EPDs and indexes used to accurately describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® registered cattle.
Docility is an important trait that impacts beef operations’ bottom lines in each sector of the industry. Studies have shown that animals with calmer dispositions are more productive both on the ranch as well as in the feedyard and ultimately exhibit higher carcass values and greater tenderness, among other advantages.
Higher docility EPD values for Gelbvieh and Balancer animals indicate a more favorable temperament. Over the past 20 years, the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed has gained favorable progress in docility on top of a solid foundation of historically docile cattle. However, the range of docility EPDs of active sires proves that there is genetic diversity, which means further progress can be made. It’s also important to note that in herds where temperament is not currently a concern, differences will not be as intensely realized. The addition of the docility EPD was made possible in part by the large number of disposition phenotype scores that AGA members have collected over the past several years. The AGA commends its membership for understanding the importance of such phenotypic data. D

Our Mission is to Serve YOU! By Megan Slater
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is a beef cattle breed association dedicated to recording, promoting, and improving Gelbviehinfluenced cattle. This is the AGA’s mission statement, which does a good job of clearly describing what the AGA does. However, in today’s modern age, people don’t only worry about what you do, it’s how your doing it. So how is the AGA dedicated to recording, promoting, and improving Gelbvieh-influenced cattle? This “how” is exactly what inspired the AGA’s staff mission statement. Around a year and a half ago, the staff together read the book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and formed this mission statement as words to carry forward and always be reminded of our focus at the AGA. The AGA Staff Mission Statement reads: “We strive to grow as an interdependent team and humbly serve the members of the American Gelbvieh Association with integrity. We endeavor to provide accurate tools and reliable services for AGA members to produce relevant and quality Gelbviehinfluenced genetics for the commercial producer.” Over the past year, every team member at the AGA has taken these words to heart and we continually strive to make the AGA a better association for our members. Although this is the mission statement of the staff, the meaning of the statement does not have to stop there. The members of the AGA are certainly a part of the AGA team and should also use this mission statement as guidance as we all work towards bettering the breed and the association. The first part of this statement talks about the team itself and the attitude that is to be carried out everyday. “Strive to grow as interdependent team and humbly serve the members of the American Gelbvieh Association with integrity”. To become an interdependent team means to be mutually dependent on one another. The AGA staff works very closely together and relies on one another for ideas and accomplishing tasks.
8 | DECEMBER 2018
However, the AGA staff is not only a part of the team within the four walls of the office (or outside the office for those who work remotely), but we are also a part of the whole AGA team, including the AGA Board of Directors and the entire membership. It takes all members of this team to move both the Gelbvieh breed and the association into the future. It is important for this team to also be interdependent and mutually rely on one another to do their part in accomplishing our goals that are laid out in our Meeting Modern Industry Demands Strategic Plan. The staff and the board of directors alone can not advance Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics and help gain market share; it takes the members of our grassroots organization to make a difference in the breed that ultimately helps us to make a difference within the entire beef industry. The second part of this mission statement talks about the service that is provided to help AGA members and customers. “We endeavor to provide accurate tools and reliable services for AGA members to produce relevant and quality Gelbvieh-influenced genetics for the commercial producer.” In other words, we provide AGA members with the tools and services to better help their commercial customers. Whether it is utilizing tools such as genomics and BOLT-powered EPDs to better describe Gelbvieh-influenced cattle or providing programs such as Balancer Edge to giv commercial customers more potential marketing opportunities, members have access to the tools and services to better serve their customers. The AGA is continually looking to develop new programs, services, and tools to help AGA members help their customers stay successful in the modern beef industry. Change and adaptation are necessities in this fast-paced world, and we’re looking down the road to see how we can better serve Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders in the future. D
Wishing you and yours a Blessed Holiday Season and a Prosperous New Year!
From the AGA Staff

Over the Fence with F. David Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., University of Tennessee Bull Testing Program By Kelsi Christian
T
he University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture Bull Testing Program was initiated in 1969 and has provided many years of research into beef industry improvement and has seen many changes along its journey as the beef industry has evolved. Located at the Middle Tennessee Research and Education Center, and with the cooperation of Tennessee Extension, the bull test program takes a portion of the “guess work” out of selecting prospective breeding stock. Attendees of the 48th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention were able to view first hand how the bull test program operates during the industry tour on Thursday, November 29, 2018.
Please walk us through a little of your history with the program. After graduation with his Ph.D. in animal breeding from the University of Tennessee, Dr. F. David Kirkpatrick was hired by the UT Agricultural Extension Animal Science Department as a livestock specialist. In 1980 Kirkpatrick was assigned the responsibility to
10 | DECEMBER 2018
re-initiate the bull test program and has held that position ever since. He started the test in 1981 with fallborn bulls on a 140-day gain test. As time went on, and additional facilities were added, a spring-born bull test program was introduced. A few years later, the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) changed the requirements from 140-day test to a 112-day test. Then fast-forward to the time when the price of corn and feed drastically increased; the research team studied data from previous tests and changed the program to an 84-day test, which is how it’s run to this day.
What is the purpose of a bull test station? “The purpose of the bull test is to provide a standard impartial post-weaning gain test and development program that furnishes useful records to both the buyer and consignor in their breeding programs. It also provides a source of, and market for, completely performance-tested bulls that address the demands of the industry. It is a great marketing tool and window for small breeders who do not have the numbers or facilities to compete with large producer programs. The test station also serves as an educational window to beef cattle improvement, the latest technology, and promotion to the industry,” said Kirkpatrick. Many people don’t know that expected progeny differences (EPDs), breeding soundness exams, ultrasound data, frame scores, DNA testing and genomic-enhanced EPDs have all started as educational programs associated with bull testing programs.
How do the test results impact participants’ operations? “It has been a great example of breeders changing their breeding programs to be able to produce breeding stock that is in demand from the commercial producers. It has caused many purebred breeders to become more cognizant of calving ease, frame score, and performance of growth traits.”
Why is it important for producers to take part in this type of research? The bull test station has provided a venue of marketing for small producers to be able to compete with larger producers. It has also provided an educational window for both commercial and purebred breeders.
over the fence GW “There will be less demand for using bull test stations for larger purebred operations. However, the program allows the small producers an avenue to compete with the larger operations.” Many breeds of bulls have been tested over the years at the UT Bull Test Station, including Gelbvieh and the following states have been represented: Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri, Michigan, and Arkansas. D
“Our state department of agriculture has developed a program to improve the beef industry by providing cost-share monies for beef producers for facilities and genetics. We have incorporated an extra cost-share incentive for purchased bulls with genomic-enhanced EPDs. It has benefited both the purebred breeder’s program and the commercial producers because it is better able to determine real genetic differences in prospective breeding stock.”

American Gelbvieh Foundation Annual Report By Al Knapp, AGF President
“The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) secures, grows, and responsibly distributes assets for research, member education, and youth development to sustain and grow Gelbvieh genetics.”
T
he above is the mission statement of the AGF. In 2018 the AGF has awarded $3,750 in scholarships, managed the Steer Challenge and the Scale and Rail Contest, sponsored the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) banquet at the AGJA Corn Fed Classic, and sponsored the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention awards banquet.

For all your AI needs:
The AGF selected High Point Financial Group in 2017 to manage the AGF funds with fiduciary responsibility. The AGF investment policy allows for two separate funds of $400,000 each. One is a growth fund with a conservative risk profile, while the other is a more moderately aggressive investment that is able to spin off cash annually. Accounts were opened in February and funded in March. Initial investments were made and we are currently approximately 65 percent invested and should be 100 percent invested by May or June 2019. We would expect the return on investment to be $50,000 annually on a 10-year average. During the 2018 AGA National Convention the AGF hosted a succession planning seminar for the membership to hear from experts regarding responsible wealth transfer. The awards banquet at this year’s convention was once again sponsored by the Foundation. During the banquet, the winners of the Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail contest were announced. This year 161 head of steers from five states competed in the contests. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction for a chance to win a cash prize for correctly selecting the winning pen. In 2018 the AGF funded $3,750.00 in scholarships to deserving Gelbvieh youth. Recipients were: Grace Vehige, $1,000 for the Earl Buss Memorial; Sydney Taubenhiem, $1,000 for the Lenness Hall Memorial; Aubree Beenken, $750 AGJA scholarship; Halee Allen, $500 AGJA scholarship; and Caitlin Griffin, $500 AGJA scholarship. Looking forward to the future, the AGF is developing a Gelbvieh history book. The plan is to have this book available in time for AGA’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2020. A committee has been appointed to lead this effort. Preliminary plans include: 1. The translation of Diethelm Richter’s book entitled “Franconia your Yellow Cow” (translated) which depicts the German heritage of the Gelbvieh breed. 2. Jim Thomas’ efforts to assemble Gelbvieh’s early U.S. history from 1970 to 1995.

The concept is to have a Gelbvieh history coffee table book to commemorate the breed’s heritage and impact on the U.S. beef industry during its first 50 years in the country. With the investment of the building sale proceeds the Foundation will have nearly $1,000,000 in assets. AMERICAN GELBVIEH JUNIOR ASSOCIATION
A Year in Review Members of the AGA,
It is my honor to reflect with you on this year’s journey. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) has embarked on an extraordinary road-trip that has cultivated change and refined relationships for both our membership and our association. This trip has led us to believe in our youth membership and in the future of our industry. Allow me to share our journey with you. This year, there were two regional shows hosted. The 2018 AGJA Eastern Regional was held from May 2527 in Palmyra, Missouri; the regional show was hosted in memory of Patti Kendrick, a strong believer in the Gelbvieh breed and in the youth of our association. The Western Regional was held June 1-2 in Concordia, Kansas. Both events were successful. On behalf of the AGJA, I would like to extend my gratitude to all who coordinated the shows, traveled to exhibit and sponsored the events. The 2018 Corn Fed Classic was held in Waterloo, Iowa from July 1-6. There were 158 junior exhibitors at the event and 279 head present. The week was full of laughter, hard work, and a little healthy competition. Each time we gather at Junior Nationals, a new opportunity rises. Parents and members reconnect with each other, and our members’ passion for our breed and for the agriculture industry is rekindled with each day and each contest. Thank you to the sponsors of the Junior
Classic and to all those who made another great year possible. This specific week continues to prove itself as the most valuable to our association. The entirety of the event is focused on our youth, and there is no better way to promote the Gelbvieh breed than to teach now those who teach next. So much of what we do as a youth organization reflects involvement from the AGA. We are truly fortunate as an association to be modeled in your footsteps. This year, two individuals who have been incredibly generous to the AGJA announced the end of their work as junior advisers. Mike and Toni Shrewsbury have been exceptional leaders and great mentors for our association. Their time and efforts will continue to be recognized in the years to come, and they will be greatly missed by all. Andrea Murray and Emily Schilling continue to sit as junior advisers, and we are fortunate to keep them on our team. Both individuals exhibit integrity and dedication, two strong characteristics that are great examples for our Junior Board and Junior Association. Our Junior Board has been searching for new fundraising strategies and ways to increase revenue. While exploring new ideas, we found a solution within our existing platforms. The Rippe Donation Heifer is an opportunity for our organization to maximize sales; it is easily the largest fundraising opportunity that we have. To increase sales and participation, the Junior Board voted to add benefits for juniors who are offering their time and hard work to sell raffle tickets. To touch briefly on the details, a certain amount of points will

be awarded to junior members for the number of raffle tickets they sell. There is a cap on the number of points they are eligible to receive, and the points go toward the All-Around competition at Junior Nationals. This new strategy will begin after discussion at the 2019 Junior Classic and in preparation for the National Western Stock Show in 2020. The AGJA is grateful for the support of the AGA. We are blessed to be partners with the AGA so that our vision for the association can be modeled in likeness. As an association, we are conscious that our activities and events would not be possible without your generosity. We cannot thank you enough for investing in us. It is a true honor to work with you and alongside you, and it is humbling to learn from you. The AGJA will be seeking sponsorships for classes, divisions, and contests from individual breeders and operations again this year. If you are interested in being a sponsor for the 2019 AGJA Music City Showdown in Lebanon, Tennessee, please contact the AGA office or a member of the Junior Board. As you can see, our journey has brought us many different places – some not even listed. If you would like more information about AGJA activities, past work, or are looking for copies of minutes from Junior Board meetings, please do not hesitate to contact me, members of the Junior Board, or the AGA office. The AGA office can be reached at (303) 465-2333 and I can be reached at (573) 644-4414. From one association to another, thank you for supporting us tirelessly. On behalf of the AGJA, I am confident when I say that our future is bright, and our passion is fueled. Look for us next time you take a trip. Our journey is far from over. Lastly, thank you for allowing me to share our story and our year in review. Sincerely, Grace Vehige, President
Meet the Board
Grace Vehige, president, is serving her second year on the Junior Board. Grace and her family have recently relocated and now call Billings, Missouri home. T Bar S Cattle Company continues to be a family passion, and Grace stays as actively involved in her family’s operation as possible, given that she is away at school. She is currently a junior at the University of Arkansas where she studies agricultural communications and agricultural leadership with a focus in agricultural policy. After completing her degree, Grace plans to further her education and pursue a master’s degree in either agricultural communications or public policy. Grace is actively involved on campus as one of her department representatives and as an Honors Student Mentor. Grady Hammer, vice president, from Wallace, Kansas, is currently a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College. Grady is majoring in agronomy and animal science. After finishing his sophomore year at Hutchinson, he plans to transfer to Kansas State University to finish his degrees. Grady is passionate about the Gelbvieh breed and plans to continue to raise and promote this breed after graduating. His future plans are to expand his herd and produce Gelbvieh cattle that are functional and efficient to both the purebred breeder and commercial cattlemen. Grady’s goal on the board is to help expand and promote the breed and give back to an organization that has taught him many lifelong skills. His role models include his parents and grandparents because they have always been willing to volunteer and

encourage others to become leaders in their community as well as the Gelbvieh organization. Anna Ring, secretary, is from Oregon, Illinois. She is serving her second year on the Junior Board. Anna runs about 15 cow-calf pairs of Gelbvieh and Angus with her siblings’ cattle. She is currently attending Northern Illinois University, pursuing an elementary education degree with teacher licensure and is looking forward to teaching the next generation of students in the coming years. Danielle (Dani) Stock, treasurer, is from Waukon, Iowa. She is currently attending Iowa State University where she is studying animal science and genetics. Dani’s future plans include either attending veterinary school to specialize in embryo transfers and reproduction or attend graduate school for animal breeding and genetics. She also hopes to have a small herd of Gelbvieh and Balancer females on the side. One fun fact about Dani is that her family makes pure maple syrup every March and April. It is made the old fashion way by collecting the sap with a team of horses and three-gallon pails. Colton Ivers, vice president of leadership and development, is from Austin, Minnesota. He is currently a senior at Blooming Prairie High School. After high school, Colton plans on attending college and majoring in animal science. His family has been raising Gelbvieh cattle ever since he can remember. It is his goal to continue raising Gelbvieh after college and to develop a herd of his own. Colton is passionate about youth engagement and looks forward to encouraging the young junior members at Junior Nationals each year. Jesse Henson, ex-officio, is serving his third year on the Junior Board. Though he attends Oklahoma State University, Jesse calls Canton, North Carolina home. At Oklahoma State University, Jesse is pursuing a degree in animal science and is preparing for graduation in May 2019. Prior to Oklahoma State, he attended Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma. He was active on the livestock judging team and continued his passion at Oklahoma State and competed with their livestock judging team as well. After graduation Jesse plans to stay involved in the agriculture industry, anticipating a career handling livestock. He one day hopes to share his experiences with Gelbvieh with the next generation of breeders and agriculturalists.
Alexx (Lexi) Starr, director, is the daughter of Scott and Bobbi Starr and is the fourth out of nine kids. She is currently a senior at McPherson County High School and plans to attend University of Nebraska at Kearney next fall to pursue a nursing degree. She is a fifth generation Starr on Cedar Top Ranch. Together, Lexi and her family run a rather large operation of primarily Balancer cows. While in any operation your goal is to raise good females, Lexi and her family’s main focus is producing bulls that will work in any industry. Lexi is also very involved in school activities. She is currently in National Honor Society and serves as the captain of both her volleyball and basketball team. Jacob Barwick, director, is from Orleans, Nebraska. He is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and he is pursuing a degree in agricultural business. Jacob is also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He holds the position as calf show chair where he will coordinate the AGR Winter Preview. After earning his degree he plans to return to the ranch and expand upon his herd. Kallie Mattison, director, is from Minnesota. She lives on a family farm of around 200 Gelbvieh, Balancer, and commercial cattle outside of Lamberton, Minnesota. Kallie is currently a freshman majoring in animal science at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, South Dakota. With a bachelor’s in animal nutrition, she intends to pursue a career in animal nutrition. Kallie is in the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band at SDSU where she plays the trumpet for football games and parades. She has never missed a single Junior Nationals in her 11 years of membership in the AGJA and has met many lifelong friends throughout her journey. Wyatt Forbes, director, grew up in Arlington, South Dakota, and graduated high school in 2015. He is the son of Troy and Pam Forbes, and has two siblings, Cody and Jaycie. He attended his first Junior Nationals in 2006 in Sioux Falls. After his high school graduation, Wyatt’s family moved to their family farm near Willow Lake, South Dakota. He attended Lake Area Technical Institute where he majored in ranch management. Wyatt graduated in December 2017 and took a full-time position with Prairie Ag Partners as a feed specialist. A few of Wyatt’s hobbies include hunting, playing basketball, and showing cattle.

AMERICAN GELBVIEH JUNIOR ASSOCIATION
Where Our Journey Will Take Us
As I’ve mentioned before, the AGJA is on a journey. The Junior Board of Directors is working to guide the association to new opportunities and areas of progress. You’ve seen us at Junior Nationals, the Summit, the American Royal and at the North American International Livestock Exhibition (NAILE). We have also represented the AGJA at the 2018 AGA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. However, our journey will continue throughout the new year. The Junior Board of Directors will travel to the 2019 National Western Stock in Denver, Colorado, this January. We will also be attending the 2019 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Tradeshow in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the end of January. This event will provide a great opportunity for our association to build relationships with other agriculturalists and perhaps partnership opportunities with industry professionals. It is our goal as servants to the association and to the membership to do just that: serve. We plan to serve the AGJA and the beef industry by making a continuous effort to not only be present at shows, conferences and conventions, but to be eager to share our breed’s story.
Recap of the Summit
For the second consecutive year, the AGJA partnered with the Simmental and Shorthorn breeds to coordinate the Summit. This year the conference was held in Fort Worth, Texas. There were 14 representatives from the AGJA. The conference was a great opportunity for us
to connect with people from other breeds and various companies. We also toured an operation from each breed at the Summit. The Mohl family from Sulphur Springs, Texas, hosted the group at their ranch and was by far the favorite stop by all conference attendees; they represented the Gelbvieh breed well. The Summit will not reconvene until 2020, but don’t let that stop you from planning ahead. It is truly an incredible opportunity to meet new people, learn more about cattle, and share the message of the Gelbvieh breed with others. For more information about the Summit, please contact the Junior Board of Directors or the AGA office.

Sharp Turn to Cold Brings Threat of Fescue Foot in Beef Cow Herds By Duane Dailey, University of Missouri Extension
O
dd fall weather and fescue pasture growth set up potential poisonous pastures causing fescue foot in cow herds. Fall growth after a drought produces more toxins in infected tall fescue grass. The poison develops after rains start regrowth following a drought, says Craig Roberts, University of Missouri Extension specialist. Roberts urges herd owners to keep close watch on their cows. “At first sign of a limp, take the cow off the toxic grass,” Roberts says. “Make plans for alternative feeds,” he says. That includes pasture without Kentucky 31 fescue. On most farms, fescue remains the most-used forage. It is hardy because the toxin protects the plant from pests. Another choice is to confine and feed limping cows on grain and nontoxic hay. Ensiled fescue hay should be avoided. Plastic-wrapped moist hay, or balage, preserves toxins. Several factors worsen fescue toxicosis causing fescue foot, Roberts says. Ergot alkaloids produced by a fungus in infected fescue restrict blood flow in cattle. Fescue foot develops in long cold spells. In cows, low blood flow to feet allows frozen hooves. In worst cases, hooves fall off. Injured cattle cannot walk to graze pastures. They stay in place and die from lack of feed. Roberts says, “We’ve known of this syndrome since 1994. This year may be worse than usual.” Spreading extra nitrogen fertilizer in the fall to boost grass growth also boosts production of toxins, he says. In a normal year, extension recommends adding 60 pounds of nitrogen. This year, after the long drought and shortage of hay, many farmers added 80 pounds of
26 | DECEMBER 2018
N. There’s been good grass-growing weather this fall, Roberts says. The extra growth brings more toxins. The trigger can be continued low temperatures. “A cold snap of one day isn’t a problem,” he says. “A week of freezing could be a disaster.” There’s no cure for fescue foot, but prevention works. Herd owners who converted toxic fescue pastures to a novel-endophyte fescue need not worry. “Fall growth is a bonus on new pastures,” Roberts says. “We see benefits on pastures that have been converted.” There are no toxins and forage quality is higher with the new fescues. More nitrogen fertilizer on novel-endophyte grass brings more feed. Prevention includes not grazing fall-grown fescue too short. Recent research shows most toxins in the fall stay in the lower 2 inches of the fescue plant. Another preventive plan is to feed winter hay in fall cold spells. The pastures left standing in winter decrease in toxins with time. By January there will be less poison in the grass. Stockpile can be grazed late in winter with few problems. Management-intensive grazing with quick rotations through paddocks helps prevent short grazing. “With rotational grazing, cows are moved before they grub grass into the ground,” Roberts says. Cool-season grasses have an advantage, growing rapidly two times a year: Growth in spring and fall adds to grazing seasons. Spring grazing requires caution, as toxins concentrate in seed heads and stems. Those are easily grazed by cows. There are no seed heads in fall growth. The only cure for fescue toxicosis is killing infected pasture and reseeding to a novel-endophyte fescue. Schools teaching reseeding were held in Missouri for years. Now those schools are held in the fescue belt across the Southeast. More schools will be in March, Roberts said. Schools cover six states from Missouri southeast to North Carolina and Georgia. news GW Limit Feeding Cows Corn as an Alternative to Hay By Erin Laborie, Nebraska Extension Educator
F
eed costs make up the largest expense in a cowcalf operation. While hay is often used to feed cows through the winter, current prices make corn a competitive option to feeding hay. Considering corn has a higher energy content than hay, the cost of feeding hay is often higher than corn on a price per pound of energy basis. For example, corn priced at $3.30/bushel ($118/ ton) equates to approximately $0.08 per pound of total digestible nutrients (TDN) while hay priced at $100/ton is nearly $0.11 per pound of TDN. A study conducted at The Ohio State University evaluated limit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for mature cows in gestation and early lactation. Cows were either fed around 11 pounds of whole shelled corn, 2.5 pounds of a pelleted supplement, and 2 pounds of hay (dry matter basis) or offered hay and a salt and mineral mix free choice from November to April. Hay was predominantly first-cutting orchardgrass testing around 72% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 9.5% crude protein (CP). Cows fed free choice hay ate twice as much feed resulting in double the feed costs compared to limit feeding the corn-based diet. The results of this study suggest that corn can be limit fed to meet the nutrient requirements of cows without negatively impacting performance, conception rate, or calf weaning weight.
3. Utilize an ionophore to improve feed efficiency and help minimize digestive upsets. 4. Divide cows into groups based on age and pecking order, if possible, so that boss cows do not keep younger and more timid cows from getting their share of the ration. 5. Realize that cows will act hungry when receiving a limit fed diet, even though the ration is meeting the nutrient needs of the cow. 6. Feed cows at a consistent time each day to help minimize cows displaying discontented behavior. 7. Adjust the ration for changes in the cow’s nutrient requirements as needed. The nutrient needs of the cow are highest during late gestation and early lactation. Additionally, cold weather events can increase the energy requirements of the cow. Depending on current commodity prices and availability, there is opportunity to winter cows using alternative energy sources to hay. Limit feeding a cornbased diet can be a cost effective option for meeting the nutrient requirements of cows. The University of Nebraska has conducted several studies to evaluate limit feeding cows. For more information, please see the Dry Lot Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise page at beef.unl.edu. For assistance with evaluating cost differences of feedstuffs, consider using the Feed Cost Cow-Q-Lator. D

When utilizing a limit fed, grain-based diet, there are several factors producers should take into consideration to help facilitate the success of the program. 1. Adjust cows to the limit fed diet over a week to tenday period by gradually increasing the corn and reducing the hay to desired levels. This will help cows transition to the new ration and minimize digestive upsets. 2. Provide at least 24 to 30 inches of bunk space per cow. Adequate space is needed to ensure that all cows have an opportunity to eat the limited feed that will be provided. GELBVIEH WORLD |

It’s Raffle Ticket Sale Season By Colton Ivers
F
or AGJA members, selling heifer raffle tickets is more than just fundraising. This opportunity allows youth members to interact with a diverse group of individuals and build connections for their future. Each year at Junior Nationals, AGJA members compete for the title of All-Around Champion. The AGJA Board of Directors voted for an additional opportunity for juniors to earn points for the AllAround title. It was decided at the 2018 fall board meeting to attach a point system with the heifer raffle ticket sales. This decision was made with the intention to encourage more ticket sales while providing a reward for those selling tickets. The point system will operate under the following rules: for every 10 tickets sold, juniors will be awarded 1 point toward the All-Around competition. Junior members are not able to be awarded more than 10 points; therefore, members are only given points for the first 100 tickets they sell. This does not restrict any junior member from selling more than 100 tickets. When deciding the point values, the board did not want this addition to be seen as more important than the contests offered at Junior Nationals, which is why it was decided to award no more than 10 points to individuals selling tickets.
Details regarding this new point system will further be discussed at Junior Nationals in Lebanon, Tennessee, and we hope to implement the points system then. In turn, this will mean that ticket sales with the reward of All-Around points will begin after the 2019 Junior Classic and in preparation for the donation drawing in Denver in 2020. As mentioned previously, this new points system will be discussed at the 2019 Junior Classic. In the meantime, please feel free to contact any of the AGJA Board of Directors or the AGA office with any questions or concerns. Although this new addition to our rules will not begin until next year, the Rippe donation heifer fundraiser is continuing this year. I encourage all junior members to continue their efforts and build relationships with those who will be potential contacts for future sales. This fundraiser is a great opportunity to promote the Gelbvieh breed and develop communication and sales skills that will be beneficial in the future. Heifer tickets are available to be bought and sold until the raffle drawing at the Gelbvieh and Balancer® National Sale in Denver in January. It’s never too early to start selling tickets, so get a head start and begin today! I, and the rest of the AGJA Board, will see you in Denver. Gaining Ground
Noble Research Institute simplifies cowcalf producer management decisions and increases the marketability of calves through the production of high-quality, uniform, preconditioned cattle.
By Tom Strahm
O
ver the years Gelbvieh and Balancer® sired feeder calves have been gaining acceptance within multiple segments of the beef industry. At the same time, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) staff has made a concerted effort to work hard to help you help your commercial customers. After all, isn’t it customer success that makes you more successful? Our goal is to provide commercial producers with valuable programs and services to enhance their bottom lines.
Balancer® Edge Balancer® Edge is a source and age verification program for feeder cattle sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. This program was initiated by the AGA in partnership with IMI Global, and was first released in August 2018. This program gives producers the opportunity to participate in a breed-identified feeder calf marketing program with the option to customize. Balancer Edge® customers can choose additional value-added programs, which opens the doors to additional markets and the opportunity to generate even more value for their feeder calves. The Balancer® Edge program requires a minimum of 75 percent of the sires used on an operation to be registered Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls, and these bulls must be a minimum of 25 percent Gelbvieh genetics. The source and age verification process for this program requires producers to submit first and last calf born date, head count support, and registration papers of the sires to verify Gelbvieh genetics. Balancer® Edge is easily bundled with NHTC, Verified Natural, GAP 5-Step Animal Welfare, and more. Cattle must be enrolled in the program, and have a program compliant EID tag before leaving the farm or ranch of origin. The base enrollment level includes breed requirements with source and age verification and the cost of an EID tag for $3/head.
Integrity Beef Alliance The AGA works to increase the use of Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in responsible and sustainable global beef systems. In May 2018 AGA efforts resulted in Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls becoming accepted as a sire breed for use in the Integrity Beef Alliance program. The program from the
32 | DECEMBER 2018
The Gelbvieh and Balancer breed is one of the latest breeds to be accepted as a sire choice for calves entering the terminal calf program. Bulls must have EPDs in the top 20 percent of their respective breed for weaning and yearling weight. Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls fit well into the Integrity Beef Alliance program because of their ability to sire calves exceling in growth and performance at weaning time. Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced calves carry that performance advantage into the feedlot with increased feed efficiency along with high percent retail yield on the rail. Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics are also well known throughout the industry for their superior mothering ability, which is advantageous for commercial producers who retain their own replacement females.
Feeder Finder Feeder Finder is a free email service offered by AGA to promote and assist in marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder cattle. Producers who have cattle to sell are encouraged to fill out the online form, or contact AGA staff to submit information about their cattle. Producers are invited to use this service whether the cattle sell by video auction, traditional livestock barn, or private treaty. An email blast is sent to feedyards and potential buyers to notify them about when and where these cattle are available for sale. Interested buyers can sign up to receive the Feeder Finder emails on the AGA website.
Smart Select Service Smart Select Service is an online commercial cowherd database and herd management system offered by AGA. This program is available to any producers and any breed of cattle for $1 per head annual enrollment. Cows can be enrolled at any time, and all that is required is individual identification, estimated birthdate and possible parentage. Dam production reports, progeny performance reports, and herd summaries are some of the reports generated. Smart Select can help identify strengths and weaknesses in the cowherd, enabling producers to make better-informed breeding and management decisions. For more information about these or other programs offered by the AGA, please visit www.gelbvieh.org or contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333. D

Navigating the Seedstock Sector with Confidence By Rebecca Mettler
S
eedstock production is challenging, rewarding, and takes a special set of skills to make the business work. Having a solid plan for each step closer to sale day is essential. Breeders are tasked with the unique challenge of making decisions to create a product that won’t be on the market for two years. Breeders must have a forward-thinking mindset to accurately predict what will be in demand in two years. “Plus, if those animals are going to become part of your breeding unit, their impact can span many more years,” said Keith Kissee. Kissee, from Richmond, Virginia, is a seedstock consultant with 45 years of experience in the seedstock industry and is the current Gelbvieh and Balancer® National Sale manager, which is a position he’s honored to hold. While that aspect of the seedstock business carries tremendous weight, there’s a lot more to think about when marketing seedstock in a competitive beef industry.
Management Matters When breeders are busy focusing on marketing strategies and preparing for the sale, don’t let the herd management take a back seat. Kissee says sometimes the most underdeveloped aspect of the sale can be the cattle from a condition standpoint. “The eventual selling point of beef cattle is by the pound. When you sell a bull or female make sure that they are presented in a way that’s indicative of their EPDs and performance.” Too many times people negate the fact that they don’t have the animal ready because they are afraid of getting the animal too fat. However, their ability to gain further indicates their performance if the breeder actually proves that the live animal matches ups with the EPDs or pedigree profile. Having females bred at the right time is also important. Be prepared and start breeding early to allow for extra time for females who might fall into a later calving window. Herd health management is also critical year round in order to avoid a train wreck that could derail performance or negatively affect conception rates.
36 | DECEMBER 2018
Promotion Advice Providing potential customers with a positive and accurate representation of the cattle during sale promotion is a tremendously important aspect of seedstock marketing. During sale season the most important piece of promotional material is the sale catalog. All aspects of the catalog must be on point. Photography, the genetic profile information, and historical profile information, including footnotes are all critical components of the catalog. “Photographs and video enhance the value of the product you are selling. Keep in mind that only a fraction of the people interested in buying are going to actually attend a national sale or production sale,“ Kissee said. It’s important to hire a photographer who understands cattle so that they can capture the most positive aspects of the animal. The importance of good photography is right up there with breeding, genetics, EPDs, and sale condition. Over the last several years, video has become a vitally important piece used to promote the sale offering, especially for those individuals who won’t be able to make it to the sale. Videos offer buyers added confidence in their genetic selection. “Videos have helped market cattle by providing a better indication of what the animal looks like on the move.”
Advice for Breeders New to the Business “Start with the very best genetics you can afford to invest in. If you are going to buy cattle, look for an operation with a proven track record who back their product and stand behind it,” Kissee said Kissee also recommends that new breeders keep their genetics as current as possible with as much proven data behind the genetics going into their herd. “EPDs, performance data, genomic information, or show ring success are all a part of the mixing bowl to create a great breeding program.”
Value Your Customers “The easiest customer to sell to is a past customer,” Kissee said. Standing behind the product sold and following through with customers beyond the first breeding season will go a long way in creating a loyal customer base. It takes time to build a reputation of trust and integrity, but when done properly, customers will remember. It’s the seedstock breeder’s job to provide their costumers with genetics that can work on their commercial operations and for the betterment of the beef industry. D
