FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

2023 STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION by Megan Slater

I

n 2023, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has seen a strong demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. This year many producers saw relief from drought conditions; however several are still dealing with less than normal precipitation and the entire beef industry has felt the impact of a shrinking cowherd. With the many ups and downs of the cattle industry, the AGA remains focused on the goals in the 2022-2027 long-range strategic plan and the priorities set forth every year to help accomplish those goals.

One of the top priorities of 2023 was to review the AGA’s current indexes and EPDs to ensure AGA is providing the most valuable selection tools available. The breed improvement committee, along with Dr. Bob Weaber, AGA’s genetics consultant, have been working to review the current indexes and make necessary changes to keep AGA’s indexes current. Along with these new indexes, we are looking forward to the release of new traits from IGS in the coming year, including dry mater intake (DMI) and mature weight (MW).

The AGA continues to work to provide the most accurate performance predictions possible to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Through the relationship with the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation, AGA is a part of a collaborative effort that forms one of the most powerful genetic evaluations in the world. Not only does the tremendous amount of data flow going into this evaluation help to make the selection tools more accurate, the EPDs for growth and carcass traits are also across-breed comparable.

The AGA continues to place an emphasis on data collection through several projects and initiatives. The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project has so far resulted in over 2,500 females and counting being genotyped through the project. The Cow Power Project offers members the opportunity to genomic test 90% or more of their cow herd for a discounted rate. New for this project in 2023 was the generous support of the American Gelbvieh Foundation, which made the DNA testing available to members at an even lower rate. We look forward to continuing this project

4 | GELBVIEH WORLD

into the first part of 2024, with some improvements being implemented into the project to make it more efficient and enhance member experience. Members are encouraged to take part in this project while discounted rates are still available. This year we have also seen a large increase in the number of carcass records submitted to the AGA through both the Carcass Data Collection Project, which includes genomic tests being done on those harvested animals, and general carcass data submissions. AGA staff has worked to input over 1,000 carcass records throughout 2023. Carcass data is very valuable to the genetic evaluation and AGA is appreciative of those members and customers who take the time to collect and submit this data. Marketing efforts throughout the past year have expanded and consist of spreading the Gelbvieh and Balancer message through print advertising in both national and regional publications, digital advertising, podcast and radio advertisements and interviews, television segments on “The American Rancher” and NCBA’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen, and much more. Over the last year, AGA’s

social media presence has grown over 250% and over 30 media releases have been sent out to publications and media outlets nationwide. AGA continues to have a presence at several industry events including the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, multiple summer feeder calf sales, trade shows and the Beef Improvement Federation symposium, just to name a few. AGA staff travel has also consisted of multiple producer visits and attending bull sales. AGA looks forward to its marketing efforts continuing to expand as we’ve increased the marketing budget to put additional resources towards those efforts. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) had another successful junior classic show during the AGJA Great Dakota Classic held in Huron, South Dakota. The AGJA board of directors, host state, and AGA staff work hard each year to put on a great event for the youth within the breed, and this year was no exception. The AGJA also continues to meet and exceed their various fundraising goals. The AGJA is a vital part of the AGA, helping develop future leaders of our breed, and their success could not be made possible without the generous support from many AGA members and industry partners. The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) is also an important part of the AGA as they continue their work to ensure a strong financial position for

Gelbvieh for years to come. This year, AGF created a junior fund that is dedicated to supporting AGJA For all your AI needs: well into the future. In addition, the AGF offered its support for the AGA’s Cow Power Female Genotyping Project and continues to play an important role in the AGA’s • Sheaths • Salers • Gelbvieh Carcass Data • Gloves Collection Project. • Shorthorn • Angus • Cito Thaw Units In 2023, the AGF • Dairy • Red Angus • Tanks completed their • Charolais • Simmental • A.I. VIEW FROM THE BOARD

COUNTING OUR MANY BLESSINGS by Lori Maude, AGA President

T

he holiday season is usually the opportunity to review the past year and take a moment to count our blessings. I always enjoy getting Christmas cards and letters from my friends across the country to give me just a snapshot of the major events in their lives that year. Celebrating the highs and sharing the lows—it is the cycle of life. Personally, I count the blessings of plentiful moisture and the best hay crop we’ve had in over a decade. We are fortunate and we don’t take that for granted because we’ve been on the other side of the fence, especially in 2021 and 2022. I also count it in the positive column that my family members are healthy and living their best lives. We had a few ups and downs this year, but all is good in the end. As a breed, we can do the same thing. Celebrate accomplishments and set a course to improve where we need to improve.

THE BLESSINGS I COUNT FOR THE GELBVIEH BREED THIS YEAR: •

A successful AGJA Junior Classic in South Dakota: I know I’m biased because I was on the host committee, but it was a great week with excellent weather, fantastic kids and lots of fun. If you have never attended a national junior show, I encourage you to come to Woodward, Oklahoma, in 2024. It is rewarding to see our juniors in action. A full slate of talented staff: Megan Slater leads a staff of talented individuals. Every staff member has his or her superpower and it serves our membership well. Were there some rough patches when we weren’t fully staffed? Absolutely, but we are

6 | GELBVIEH WORLD

staffed up now with people that understand member service and how to help the breed move forward. •

A well-functioning investment committee: knowing there are financial ups and downs, the AGA board established an investment committee of members to work with an investment manager to make sure our reserves are working harder for us. While those investments can’t make up for the increasing cost of doing business, they can give us a solid foundation and some future flexibility in the operating budget.

A forward-thinking strategic plan: when the board of directors sat down in Nashville in 2021 to develop the five-year strategic plan we were thinking about where the beef industry was headed. The sustainability conversation was beginning to heat up at the producer level then and today nearly every major packer or foodservice company has included sustainability as part of its mission. Gelbviehinfluenced females are perfectly positioned with reproductive efficiency and raising more pounds of calf with the same resources.

What we do need to work on is collecting more phenotypic and genotypic information on Gelbvieh and Balancer® females. The AGA needs the mature cow weights and the genotypes on those older cows to help develop the mature weight EPDs that feed into some of the indexes that will help us tell that reproductive efficiency story. We also need to keep gathering heifer exposure information— it’s all part of that sustainable cow story. As the holiday season rolls toward us, many of our members will be getting

ready for Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City and the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Both are excellent opportunities to visit in-person with breeders and learn more about individual programs. But I do hope that each of you can embrace time with family and friends, savor the flavors of the season and reflect on another year of blessings. Happiest of holidays from western South Dakota and hope to see you down the road soon. F

AN ADVANTAGEOUS INVESTMENT FOR EDUCATION When Bob Hart of Hart Farm Gelbvieh in Kansas City, Kansas, began researching purebred cattle to raise nearly 30 years ago, a friend recommended looking into the Gelbvieh breed. “He’d managed a cattle operation in Texas that bred Gelbvieh and was impressed with the breed – excellent maternal qualities, easy to handle and overall good temperament,” Bob recalled. “Since our farm is within the city limits, that sounded like a good fit for us.” Finding information sources on the breed was not easy at the time. Today, there are many online resources available to learn more about the Gelbvieh breed. But Bob sees an advantage to ensuring future breeders and students studying animal science

8 | GELBVIEH WORLD

have access to complete, accurate information about the advantages of Gelbvieh cattle. To that end, he and his wife, Margee, donated the funds to provide 67 colleges with animal science programs a copy of the American Gelbvieh Foundation’s History Book for their libraries. “If this donation results in even just a few young breeders raising Gelbvieh cattle, that will be worth every dollar spent,” Bob said. “It’s a tremendous breed that has a lot to offer the modern cattle operation.” The AGF is thankful for individuals like Bob and Margee who believe in their mission of education. We’re excited to see the impact this generous donation has on the breed.

COMMUNICATIONS MESSAGE

GET’CHA HEAD IN THE MARKETING GAME by Megan Underwood, M.S.

A

s I look out my office window, the leaves are changing and the air is crisp. Which means fall has arrived and it’s a season of harvest, celebration and preparation. Fall means something different to everyone. For me, it means getting texts from home with pictures of new calves. For some, it means cheering on their favorite team to touchdowns and a winning game. For most seedstock producers, fall means starting sale prep for their upcoming spring sales. The spring bull sale is your operation’s Superbowl. Now, I don’t claim to be a football expert by any means, but I do know a Superbowl isn’t won on game day – it’s won with months of hard work and preparation. Just like a football team needs to complete multiple downs to complete a touchdown, seedstock producers need to make at least seven marketing touchpoints to make a sale. You’ve built a strong roster and know what your bulls are capable of, but you must find the fans to buy into your program. Marketing is a game that is constantly changing and with that means new strategies to build your fanbase. Eye-catching photos, proper print ad placements and a strong social media presence can get you scoring touchdowns. Just like a football player, your bulls have strong stats with genotypes and EPDs to draw attention. However, the bull’s phenotype is either the dealmaker or the dealbreaker. High-quality photos with your bulls looking their absolute best are the key to successful first impressions with potential buyers. Pictures with your bulls in the correct profile are much more attractive to buyers than a photo with the bull standing casually in the pasture. Ask yourself, will this picture make a buyer click or scroll? Have your team walk on

10 | GELBVIEH WORLD

the field with confidence by looking their best. While our world is moving to be more digital, when it comes to the beef industry, print remains the best format for getting the word out about your sale. My graduate school research focused on why beef producers use their breed association magazines, and do you know what one of the top three reasons for use was? Print advertisements! If one of the main three reasons a beef producer opens Gelbvieh World or The Profit Picture is to look at sale advertisements to find their next purchase, why would you not want to be seen? Get the down and advertise in print. Just like a successful football team needs a strong defensive line, your operation needs a strong social media presence. Develop a social media presence that lasts year-round and not just at sale time. Posting highlights from calving season or a female doing a great job with a calf at side or how branding is a family affair, lets your potential customers have an inside look at your operation. Posts that show the mundane everyday of an operation is what keeps you front of mind come sale season and boosts your place in the social media algorithm.

You made it to the red zone, but now it’s time to get the touchdown. This is where paid social media campaigns come in. You have made multiple touchpoints with your customers, but you need one play to drive it home. Run a paid social media campaign that levels up your game and brings new customers to your sale. This past spring, Gelbvieh Media Productions implemented paid social media campaigns with great success. One of our campaigns resulted in 75 new catalog requests and 30 new bull customers, all through our strategic ad targeting. Drive your marketing into the end zone by contacting Gelbvieh Media Productions to set up your campaign. Just like downs are important to scoring a touchdown, marketing touchpoints are essential to making a sale. Determine your plays today, so you don’t fumble when it comes to marketing your bulls this spring. Strong execution of your handcrafted playbook is essential to winning your Superbowl! F

“YOU’VE BUILT A STRONG ROSTER AND KNOW WHAT YOUR BULLS ARE CAPABLE OF, BUT YOU MUST FIND THE FANS TO BUY INTO YOUR PROGRAM. MARKETING IS A GAME THAT IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING AND WITH THAT MEANS NEW STRATEGIES TO BUILD YOUR FANBASE.” - Megan Underwood, M.S.

DATA BULLETIN

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN A SALE CATALOG

S

by Sarah Mumm

ale day is one of the biggest days of the year for breeders and an important decision day for buyers. With the large amount of data available to us, it can be difficult to decide what information to include in your sale catalog. Trying to find the balance of how much information to give your potential buyers without overwhelming them can also be a challenge. Here are some suggestions on what information to consider putting in your sale catalog this year. EPDs, along with their accuracy, seem to be the logical first piece of data to include. Performance data on the animal itself, information and data on ancestors/ relatives/progeny, as well as any genomic information play into calculating the animal’s EPDs. This makes EPDs one of the best tools for buyers to use in helping them select their next herd sire. Knowing your customer base and what traits would benefit them will help you narrow down which EPDs to include. Common EPDs include calving ease direct, weaning weight, yearling weight, calving ease maternal, milk, carcass weight, ribeye area, marbling score, fat, yield grade, docility and stayability.

focus on certain traits that they want to select for their operation. Percentile ranks can be found in a couple of different places on the registry: under the “For Your Information” on the left-hand side of the page or the individual animal’s profile has them listed under their EPDs and accuracies.

Other points of interest to add to your sale catalog would be the animal’s date of birth, adjusted weights, dam of merit or dam of distinction recognition, and the expected calving date of bred females. Including the animal’s pedigree guides Including the registration number on potential buyers to view what line of the animal gives the opportunity for genetics that animal comes from. They customers to view the animal and any can see generations of proven genetics. other information they may be looking Many times, buyers come back to a for that wasn’t included in the sale pedigree that has been successful for catalog. Contact the AGA for a sale them or gives them an opportunity to try something new. Including a reference catalog data pull that includes all this information in one file to help make sires’ section somewhere in the catalog gives them something to refer that animal putting your catalog together a little pedigree back to as well as that sire’s EPDs easier!F and traits.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics offer many opportunities for a crossbreeding program. Including breed percentage makes it easy for a customer to achieve that goal and decide what percent of Indexes allow producers to select for Gelbvieh and multiple EPDs at one time making Balancer genetics to selection more efficient than selecting add to their current for one trait at a time. SALE PRI CE ANALYS I S by TOM STRAHM

S

tarting in 2019 the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has gathered sale results of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle sold at public auction. Sale prices of individual lots are obtained from breeders and collected from online auction websites. The information in this database is being used to help identify price trends and help provide insight into what traits are collectively important to buyers. There are 41 sales in our data set for the spring 2023 sale season (January – April 2023). This includes a total of 3,272 animals with individual prices reported from that period compared to 3,248 and 2,785 from the two previous years. The total number is comprised of 2,700 bulls with an average price of $5,275 and 572 females with an average price of $2,741. The total number of bulls sold during the spring sale season has remained relatively constant over the last 4 years with 2,671 bulls from 41 sales included in our 2020 spring sales. The average sale price has increased by $1,235 per bull from $4,040 per head for bulls in 2020. The total number of females has increased from 471 head and average prices increased by $588 for the females. A few other statistics from the Spring 2023 sale season: •

78% of the 2023 sale prices reported were from the Midwest region.

56% of sales were held at ranches, and 44% were held in livestock auction markets.

62% of sales were Balancers, 25% purebred Gelbvieh, and 13% hybrids or other breeds.

14 | GELBVIEH WORLD

80% of the cattle were black with an average price advantage of $200 per head.

45% of the black cattle are homozygous black.

$400 head advantage for being homozygous black by pedigree or DNA testing over other blackcolored cattle.

36% were homozygous polled either by pedigree or by DNA testing.

$400 per head advantage for homozygous polled animals.

60% were sire verified and had genomically enhanced EPDs.

$979 per head advantage for animals with GE-EPDs.

One area of analysis is looking at the service type of the sale animals, and what effect that has on sale prices. Animals that are the result of embryo transfer or artificial insemination continue to bring substantially higher prices than those animals sired by natural service. Artificial Insemination is one of the most effective tools available to cattle producers to make genetic progress and to improve the productivity and profitability of their cattle operation. I would encourage seedstock producers to individually review their own operations and management practices. Evaluate the success and effectiveness of your current AI program. Looking at these collective numbers from the sale data analysis, there is an opportunity to increase the return to labor and management for some operations.

Another very important tool that breeders should be utilizing is DNA testing. A couple of the benefits include parent verification and the increased accuracy offered by genomic-enhanced EPDs. I understand that DNA testing is a significant expense for a seedstock producer, however, this is a value-added proposition for sellers and buyers alike. As buyers pay more for cattle, they also want to know more details about the product they are purchasing such as being homozygous polled versus heterozygous. Our 2023 sales data shows that animals with GE-EPDs sold for $979 more on average than those animals without. The price difference continues to get larger and has more than doubled from $435 in 2020. Overall quality and phenotypic differences are hard to quantify and are not included in our sale analysis. Obviously, quality is very important, and often it is a factor in purchasing decisions. Good phenotype and high quality are never out of style and generally sell well. However, there are more factors that contribute to high genetic value and final valuation. Consider the higher value of a phenotypically correct bull that has been DNA tested and reduces the risk for your customer. He is homozygous polled with well-balanced GE-EPDs across the board and the color of choice. I think many of our commercial bull buying customers are more discerning than ever before. Most of them want to buy the complete package and are willing to pay you for it when they find it.F

AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION

Annual Report by BRIAN DUNN, AGF PRESIDENT

W

e often hear the quote “the only thing that is constant is change” and the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) can attest to that quote in the past year. One of the ‘changes’ enacted this year, was the establishment of a long-term investment fund for the benefit of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). AGF board member Tom Murphy stated, “This should have been started 30 years ago to help support the AGJA and the AGJA Junior Classic.” Tom went to work raising the ‘seed’ money to establish the fund with the sale of a heifer donated by the Beastrom Ranch during the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. Over $35,000 dollars was raised for this endowment fund. The foundation board thanks Tom, the Beastrom family and the 40 donors that made this a success. Donations will continue to be accepted and can be placed into this fund at any time. Stay tuned for more events as we work to grow this fund for our future breeders and leaders. The AGF continues to support $4,000 in long standing scholarships given to AGJA members at the AGJA Junior Classic. During the last year, the AGF has set up a specific investment fund to generate proceeds to fund these scholarships. The AGF scholarship committee was pleased with the quality and record number of junior members who applied

18 | GELBVIEH WORLD

for the scholarships. Additionally, the AGF continued their long-standing sponsorship of the awards banquet at the AGJA Great Dakota Classic and two scholarships for participants attending The Summit in Phoenix, Arizona. The 2023 Steer Challenge was once again held at Kinsley Feeders with 63 head representing six ranches. The AGF board wants to thank Derek Martin and his crew for hosting the contest and the three breeders who donated steers to the AGF. We continue to encourage breeders to participate and the delivery dates for the 2024 contest is December 11-15, 2023. In the foundation’s quest to support research and promote data gathering, we have held ‘constant’ with the financial support for the DNA testing cost of the cattle participating in the Carcass Data Collection Project. This year, over 600 head were run through this program, and the foundation still has more dollars committed to this program for additional cattle. The ‘change’ for the year was the foundation’s support of the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project by offering a $5/head rebate for those committing to the project. Over 2,500 head have been tested through the program so far. The foundation continues to have history books available and wants to give a shout out to Post Rock Cattle Company for donating books to individuals graduating from the junior program. Thank you to Bob and Margee Hart for donating the funds to provide animal science programs

at 67 colleges with an AGF history book. We would also like to thank Marcus Haney – Early Dawn/Buckhorn Ranch and Johnny Green- Heyward/Green Farms for generously donating their semen archives to be sold for the benefit of the foundation. On the financial side of AGF, the assets had a growth year, but to truly elevate the programs of the Foundation, continued financial support is needed from Gelbvieh enthusiasts. The foundation and our investment brokers are available for developing individual plans to support your foundation or individual interest. I truly appreciate those who have chosen to give of their time and resources as we make efforts to continue to grow and improve the foundation and the breed. I thank the board and volunteers for their willingness to provide their time and talents. On behalf of AGF board, I would like to give my sincere appreciation and thanks to Al and Mary Knapp for their years of leadership and dedication to the AGF board as they retired from their leadership positions this last year. As always, change is constant, with that in mind, I hope you will consider how you can participate in the activities or support of the American Gelbvieh Foundation.F

JUNIOR CONNECTION

REFLECTIONS OF THANKFULNESS by Sadie Morris, AGJA Director

A

s the holiday season approaches, I would like to take a chance to reflect on the year we’ve had with the amazing people and outstanding cattle associated with our breed, as well as list a few things I’m thankful for regarding the breed we all love. I am thankful for raising Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle because of how impressive they are in terms of maternal traits and sustainability. Gelbvieh cattle consistently raise heavy weaning calves in various environments and conditions.

with them even more momentous. Each time I am around them it is like being greeted by family and that truly means the world to me.

siblings the ins and out of the show world that I truly love because I know how much being involved with show cattle has done for me in my life.

During the holiday season certain traditions are what makes this part of the year so important to me. One tradition that me and my family partake in each year is going out and checking our spring calving breds because they are going to calve soon. Considering my mother is a junior high teacher, she is able to be home during Christmas break and my dad is around as much as possible. During this time, we are all able to go out to check cattle and work around the ranch as a family which means a lot to me because doing chores is not their ideal way to spend Christmas break, but to me it’s the best way to not only spend time together but also be productive.

As we all know, we are coming up on Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City and I cannot express how excited I am to see everyone that will be there. Another major part of Cattlemen’s Congress I am excited to attend is the AGA National Sale. And just a reminder to everyone attending the sale and congress this year, the AGJA will be selling raffle tickets for this year’s donation heifer which is the junior association’s main fundraiser and I encourage everyone to please support us through this raffle as your support is greatly appreciated.

Being from northern Mississippi, our cattle must be able to perform in both extreme heat during the summer and spontaneous weather trends during the winter that can vary from below freezing to highs of 80 degrees within the same week. After years of ranching, my family found that Gelbvieh cattle are the perfect fit. Regardless of the current conditions of Another part of the holiday season I enjoy each year their performance can only be is being able to see the family and friends summed up by one word, consistency. that I am not able to be around during the rest of the year due to busy schedules and I am also thankful to be a part of the other responsibilities. Another tradition, American Gelbvieh Junior Association I really enjoy is being able to work our (AGJA). Living so far away from the show cattle with my siblings during the majority of the board members is a holiday break. Being the oldest sibling, I challenge to say the least, but on the flip side it makes the time I am able to spend thoroughly enjoy teaching my younger
