WELCOME
Greetings, Thank you for your interest in our program and welcome to our annual production sale. We have been breeding Gelbvieh cattle for 34 years and continue to be thankful for the support of the great people that we have been associated with in this business. Our goal continues to be to provide you with the best Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics available, with calves sired by top AI sires and National Champion bulls. We believe the Gelbvieh breed offers the best combination of disposition, maternal excellence and growth of any breed. Videos of each sale lot will be posted on our website. Online bidding will be available through DVAuction.com. Again, thank you for your continued interest and confidence in our breeding program. Give us a call, visit our website at www. gustinsdiamondd.com or e-mail us at gustindd@wildblue.net for information or a catalog. We enjoy visiting with you about your program and will do our best to assist you in making your selections. We look forward to seeing you on sale day. The Offering This year we are again offering both purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. We are also offering 25 bred heifers selected from the heart of our program.
Something to Watch For Watch for Dams of Merit and Distinction in the footnotes. These are high-producing cows identified by the AGA. Fewer than 5% of Gelbvieh cows achieve Dam of Merit status; and fewer than 1% achieve Dam of Distinction status. Our herd currently ranks third in the nation for number of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction.
Our Program We are firm believers in balanced-trait selection, putting emphasis on many different areas including disposition, calving ease, performance, maternal traits, structural soundness, eye appeal, EPDs and carcass traits. We believe that by not creep feeding we are better able to select our replacement females, and feel we are on the right track as our first-calf heifers continue to put a large number of high-quality calves in the sale each year.
Schedule and Terms At 10:30 a.m,. the bulls with be penned for viewing and the complimentary lunch will be served at noon. The sale will be at 1 p.m. in the heated sale barn, with telephone and online bidding available for those unable to attend. As always, we guarantee satisfaction on all sight-unseen purchases. Geneseek DNA profiles, homozygous polled and homozygous black information, adjusted yearling weights and scrotal measurements will be available online and on sale day.
We are pleased with the consistency of our offering this year as the bulls weaned off heavier and have been more heavily culled than ever. The calves have been doing great in spite of the harsh weather. We continue to feed a total mixed ration of homegrown feeds and distillers grain for a moderate 3.5-pound average daily gain after weaning that will keep the bulls sound and maintain longevity.
Dennis & Sherry Gustin and Family 5135 Hwy 6 • Mandan, ND 58554 (701) 663-7266 (701) 400-3483 cell
We will deduct $50 off the purchase price of any bull taken home on sale day. Or, buyers can pay half on sale day and we will feed the bulls free until April 1. After April 1, there will be a $2/day feed charge. Please call if we can assist you with these services.

SALE INFORMATION
The American Gelbvieh Association’s Feeder Finder service assists producers in marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced feeder cattle. Whether selling private treaty or via auction, producers with load lots of feeder cattle are encouraged to fill out the free Feeder Finder form. These cattle are then listed on the AGA website and presented to feedyards across the country.
As a valued customer of Gelbvieh influenced calves, you are eligible to list your calves on the American Gelbvieh Association’s “Feeder Finder.” Simply list your calves with a brief description of your cattle and the listing will be sent to over 200 feedlots across the United States. All listings must be in load lots, so if you don’t have enough calves to fill a semi load, consider teaming up with a neighbor who has Gelbvieh-influenced calves.
Contact William McIntosh at 502-867-3132 or Angela Vesco at 303-465-2333 to list your cattle on Feeder Finder.
Just another way the AGA is helping to add value to your program. 2

How well do you really know your cows? Get to know them better through Smart Select Service. Smart Select Service is an online record management database that gives the commercial producer, regardless of breed, genetic tools generated from their cows’ records. These tools can then be used to make sound breeding decisions that will identify the cows that will increase herd productivity and profitability.
Gustin’s Diamond D will offer a voucher for $50 with the purchase of one bull or $100 with the purchase of two or more bulls toward enrolling your herd in the Smart Select program if you wish to do so.
Herd Reports: • Progeny Report • Herd Sires Report • Dam Production Report • Herd Summary Report
Genetic Tools: • Feeder Profit Index (FPI): Index for selecting progeny to perform in the feedyard and on the rail. • Stayability (ST score): Gauge the reproductive longevity of the herd.
The American Gelbvieh Association is continually working to enhance the breed in all sectors of the industry. The AGA is currently providing the “Smart Select Service” to all producers that use Gelbvieh Genetics in their herds. Ranchers provide information on their cows including breeding dates and expected calving dates of cows, and weaning information about the calves. This service will help you keep records of your cows on a yearly basis, while adding information to the breed data base nationwide. The cost is $1/head.

This calf impressed us and our visitors this summer and continues to do so this winter. He has a moderate frame with excellent thickness. His growth and milk EPDs are in the top 10% of the breed and his dam has a lifetime weaning ratio of 107 and yearling ratio of 108. It is not surprising that he weaned off over 800 lbs.

A high-performing female that should give growth and frame to her progeny. She is carrying an AI heifer due March 8 to Musgrave Aviator.
EPD DEFINITIONS Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.
MATERNAL TRAITS Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
WHAT IS AN INDEX?
GROWTH TRAITS Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
CARCASS TRAITS Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries.
As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. 24
