WELCOME
Welcome cattlemen and cattlewomen, Whether you are a long time customer or a new attendee, we welcome you and thank you for your interest in our breeding program. 2017 has been a challenging weather year, starting off with extreme snow and cold last winter, followed by drought, excessive heat and more recently, extreme cold again. Through it all, our cows weaned off the heaviest calves ever and we are excited to present them for your appraisal. For 35 years we have continually balanced trait selected with a special emphasis on eye appeal, performance, maternal traits and docility. We have spent years selecting AI sires, purchasing top quality herdsires, doing embryo transfer to multiply our best genetics, and visually appraising and culling the herd to bring you the best genetics possible. We believe the animals offered this year can satisfy our commercial and purebred customers alike. Feel free to contact us or visit our website, www.gustinsdiamondd.com for more information on the cattle. We would love to help you with your selections and look forward to seeing you on sale day. As always we guarantee sight unseen purchases for those unable to attend the sale. All bulls are guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season. In the event of injury or death in a 90-day breeding season, notify Gustin’s Diamond D immediately. We will replace the bull with one of similar value or allow a credit of the value of the bull less salvage value in the next sale.
TERMS OF SALE: All animals sell according to the recommended terms of the AGA. Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling unless stated otherwise in the catalog. Settlement is to be made the day of the sale, with the buyer having the option of paying 50% on sale day and 50% when the animals are picked up or delivered.
DEVELOPING THE CATTLE: Calves are raised on grass and their mother’s milk only. We do not creep feed our calves as we feel that we can better identify our highly maternal lines, and we feel the consistency and performance of the calves produced by our first calf heifers are proving this theory. We continue to feed a TMR ration of ground corn, silage, hay, and distillers grain after weaning. We aim for a moderate gain of 3.25 to 3.5 pounds per day to maintain longevity in the bulls while allowing the top calves to separate themselves from the rest of the pen.
DISCOUNTS: There is a $50 discount if bulls are hauled away on sale day. Discount does not apply to heifers. A 5% volume discount is available on purchases of 5 bulls or more.
GENOMICS AND TESTING:
SUPPLEMENT SHEET AND VIDEOS:
All bulls have had an LD genomic test, are sire verified and have genomic-enhanced EPDs. All eligible bulls have been tested for the homozygous black trait and approximately 1/3 of the bulls have been tested for the homozygous polled trait. All females have been ultrasound checked by the Mandan Veterinary Clinic and calves of known sex are identified in the footnotes.
Adjusted yearling weights and scrotal measurements will be provided on sale day and will be available on our website after February 1 and as soon as available. Videos of all sale lots will be posted on our website on February 1.
FEEDING AND DELIVERY: We are offering free feeding of the bulls until April 1. After that time we will charge $2 per head per day. Free delivery within 250 miles will begin on April 1. Free feeding and free delivery do not apply to the females in the sale. Please make arrangements to pick up all female lots within one week of the sale date.
DAMS OF MERIT AND DISTINCTION: Watch for Dams of Merit and Distinction in the footnotes. These are cows that consistently produce above average calves on a 365 day interval. Fewer than 5% of Gelbvieh cows achieve Dam of Merit status and fewer than 1% achieve Dam of Distinction status. Our herd ranks second in the nation for breeding Dams of Merit and Distinction.
LIABILITY: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. Sale hosts assume no responsibility for accidents, theft or damages occurring at the sale facility.
INSURANCE: Klint Sickler will be available on sale day for you to insure your purchases if you desire.

SALE INFORMATION
The American Gelbvieh Association’s Feeder Finder service assists producers in marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced feeder cattle. Whether selling private treaty or via auction, producers with load lots of feeder cattle are encouraged to fill out the free Feeder Finder form. These cattle are then listed on the AGA website and presented to feedyards across the country.
As a valued customer of Gelbvieh influenced calves, you are eligible to list your calves on the American Gelbvieh Association’s “Feeder Finder.” Simply list your calves with a brief description of your cattle and the listing will be sent to over 200 feedlots across the United States. All listings must be in load lots, so if you don’t have enough calves to fill a semi load, consider teaming up with a neighbor who has Gelbvieh-influenced calves.
Contact Angela Vesco at 303-465-2333 to list your cattle on Feeder Finder.
Just another way the AGA is helping to add value to your program. 3

“The Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls have improved the consistency and uniformity of our calves. We like the growth, performance and disposition of the Balancer calves. We have been selling our harvest-ready cattle on a live basis, but in April 2017 we sold some of our home-raised cattle on a grid, and were pleased with the premiums. How well do you really know your cows? Get to know them better through Smart Select Service. Smart Select Service is an online record management database that gives the commercial producer, regardless of breed, genetic tools generated from their cows’ records. These tools can then be used to make sound breeding decisions that will identify the cows that will increase herd productivity and profitability.
Gustin’s Diamond D will offer a voucher for $50 with the purchase of one bull or $100 with the purchase of two or more bulls toward enrolling your herd in the Smart Select program if you wish to do so.
Herd Reports: • Progeny Report • Herd Sires Report • Dam Production Report • Herd Summary Report
Genetic Tools: • Feeder Profit Index (FPI): Index for selecting progeny to perform in the feedyard and on the rail. • Stayability (ST score): Gauge the reproductive longevity of the herd.
The American Gelbvieh Association is continually working to enhance the breed in all sectors of the industry. The AGA is currently providing the “Smart Select Service” to all producers that use Gelbvieh Genetics in their herds. Ranchers provide information on their cows including breeding dates and expected calving dates of cows, and weaning information about the calves. This service will help you keep records of your cows on a yearly basis, while adding information to the breed data base nationwide. The cost is $1/head.

A Ten X son, with a nice birth to growth spread. This calf is a stylish half blood that is clean in through his brisket and smooth into his shoulder and fore rib. His weaning weight was 735 pounds, and with that performance, he is still above breed average for calving ease. His mother DDGR 191W is one of our best and most consistent producers and has been a Dam of Merit for the past four years.

Phenotypically correct and genotypically outstanding. He’s the result of mating arguably the best cow we ever raised with the best bull we ever raised. This IVF calf has performance numbers that are off the charts to go with his great eye appeal. Selling ½ possession and ½ semen interest, with the buyer having possession the first year, the seller the second year and alternating years after that.

Very good potential in this Nobleman son, with performance on the top side of the pedigree and calving ease on the bottom side. His dam has a weaning weight ratio of 107 on three calves.
EPD DEFINITIONS Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.
MATERNAL TRAITS Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
GROWTH TRAITS Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
CARCASS TRAITS Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
WHAT IS AN INDEX? Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. 23

We used the Right Answer bull to keep the calving ease and muscle pattern like the Final Answer sire had done for us earlier. This heifer has a calving ease EPD in the top 20% and weaning and yearling EPDs in the top 25%. Add the Black Impact genetics of her dam and we have a female with unlimited potential. Due March 5 with a heifer calf by the CCRO Leverage sire.
