Welcome cattlemen and cattlewomen, We would like to welcome everyone to our Annual Production Sale and say thank you to our past customers for the past years of support. We also look forward to building relationships with those of you who may be new to our program and helping you with your genetic needs. Our bulls and females have performed very well as in the past and we welcome your appraisal of the offering. This year has been a year of many changes for all of us. We have moved the sale location to Richie and Sarah’s ranch north of Medina. This is by no means a retirement, but a transition to the next step in the program. They have better facilities for developing the bulls, with a fifteen-acre lot rather than a corral. The bulls are receiving more exercise and will be sold in better physical condition ready for use. The sale format will also be changed to a video sale, with the bulls penned outside and being sold on video screens without entering the barn. However, some things haven’t changed. For almost 40 years, we have been selecting for balanced traits, with special emphasis on eye appeal, performance, maternal traits and docility. Our goal has always been to bring you the best Gelbvieh/Balancer genetics possible. We believe the animals offered this year can satisfy our commercial and purebred customers alike. Our feed rations, customer service and guarantees also remain the same. With possible COVID limitations and the new sale format, this may be the year to come early to evaluate the animals and visit about your program and ours. As always, we guarantee sight unseen purchases for those unable to attend the sale. All bulls are guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season. In the event of injury or death in a 90-day breeding season, notify Gustin’s Diamond D immediately. We will replace the bull with one of similar value or allow a credit of the value of the bull less salvage value in the next sale.

TERMS OF SALE: All animals sell according to the recommended terms of the AGA. Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls selling unless stated otherwise in the catalog. Settlement is to be made the day of the sale, with the buyer having the option of paying 50% on sale day and 50% when the animals are picked up or delivered.

DEVELOPING THE CATTLE: Calves are raised on grass and their mother’s milk only. We do not creep feed our calves as we feel that we can better identify our highly maternal lines, and we feel the consistency and performance of the calves produced by our first calf heifers are proving this theory. We continue to feed a TMR ration of ground corn, silage, hay, and distillers grain after weaning.

DISCOUNTS: There is a $50 discount if bulls are hauled away on sale day. Discount does not apply to heifers. A 5% volume discount is available on purchases of 5 bulls or more.

GENOMICS AND TESTING: All bulls have genomic enhanced EPDs, have been parent verified, and have been tested for homozygous polled and coat color. Heifers have had the same tests but data will be posted on our website and available on a supplement sheet on sale day. All females have been ultrasound checked by the Mandan Veterinary Clinic and calves of known sex are identified in the footnotes.

SUPPLEMENT SHEET AND VIDEOS: Adjusted yearling weights and scrotal measurements will be posted on our website on or after February 5 as soon as they are available and on a supplement sheet on sale day. Videos of all sale lots will be posted on our website on February 5.

DAMS OF MERIT AND DISTINCTION:

FEEDING AND DELIVERY:

Watch for Dams of Merit and Distinction in the footnotes. These are cows that consistently produce above average calves on a 365-day interval. Fewer than 5% of Gelbvieh cows achieve Dam of Merit status and fewer than 1% achieve Dam of Distinction status. Our herd ranks 3rd in the nation for breeding Dams of Merit and Distinction. Currently 17% of our assessed cows are Dams of Merit and 4% are Dams of Distinction.

We are offering free feeding of the bulls until April 1. After that time, we will charge $2 per head per day. Free delivery within 250 miles will begin on April 1. Free feeding and free delivery do not apply to the females in the sale.

The American Gelbvieh Association’s Feeder Finder service assists producers in marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced feeder cattle. Whether selling private treaty or via auction, producers with load lots of feeder cattle are encouraged to fill out the free Feeder Finder form. These cattle are then listed on the AGA website and presented to feedyards across the country.

As a valued customer of Gelbvieh influenced calves, you are eligible to list your calves on the American Gelbvieh Association’s “Feeder Finder.” Simply list your calves with a brief description of your cattle and the listing will be sent to over 200 feedlots across the United States. All listings must be in load lots, so if you don’t have enough calves to fill a semi load, consider teaming up with a neighbor who has Gelbvieh-influenced calves.

We were happy with the performance and look of the DaVinci bull’s calves, so when we had the opportunity to purchase his sire from Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, we did and we haven’t been sorry. He has a marbling EPD in the top 5% of the breed and is diluter free, with more calving ease than his son.

A homozygous black AI sire we have used to add calving ease while keeping the growth and frame in his calves. We have used him successfully on heifers and have been pleased with the results.

GUSTIN’S DIAMOND D GELBVIEH EPD DEFINITIONS Efficiency Traits

Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.

Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

*Average daily gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

*Residual feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

What is an Index? Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity. Scrotal circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring. Growth traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Mature weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries. Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.

Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
