KANSAS BULL DEVELOPMENT The Kansas Bull Development process is consisted of many detail oriented tasks, all requiring very intense management including, but not limited to nutrition, handling, social behavior, bunk management and pen conditions.

Kansas Bull Development takes every measure very seriously and watches every detail as close as possible. Nutrition is the most important aspect to bull development. First of all, there is a fine line to proper condition for a yearling bull to be in. Some bulls enter the market be by going through the ring with off the charts weights and a delicious look. Such as a calf going to slaughter and he may look and sell very well. But as the weight comes off and it’s time for the work to be done, there can be some serious sacrifices. On the flip side, there may be some that feed off of over-fed bulls and push the low inputs with a “ready to work” slogan. This can be just as bad or worse in some cases because often they are deficient in many areas to some degree. Bulls need proper nutrition. They do have high requirements all the way to about 2 to 2 1/2 years of age. Much like our growing teenage boys!! Therefore, we believe in developing the bulls with proper nutrition and a diet heavy in high quality forages and protein as well as high levels of vitamins and minerals. Not only does this ensure proper development, function and fertility. It also leaves a little cushion for any requirement deficiencies they may potentially encounter from sale time to the end of their main growth curve up to 2 years old. We also believe in feeding sufficient and quality protein so the bulls can put on an adequate amount of muscle. Therefore these bulls are packed with muscle and not fat. Yearling bulls will loose fat when they are in a breeding season, not so much muscle... The scan data and BSE results speak for this!

The diet on test consists of a complete liquid supplement with high levels of hydroxies and chelates as well as all essential nutrients. Our TMR is made of a correct balance of Earlage, Alfalfa, Prairie Hay in large amounts and Corn, Supplement, Distillers and Silage in small amounts.

The handling and social behaviors are enhanced and monitored by regularly walking pens and just spending time with them. Bunk management and pen conditions are two items that can easily be overlooked. However they can be equally important if they aren’t managed correctly!

Bottom line is these bulls are developed with fertility and longevity in mind. KBD averages much less than average re-check or fail rates on fertility exams. This speaks volumes of the big picture with the bulls. Add Hilltop Farms superb genetics, selection, experience and management to the mix and one can not go wrong with a very positive impact to their herd.
