THANK YOU FOR 20 YEARS OF SUPPORT Following the advice of my doctors, I put my complete herd up for dispersal on November 12th. I want to thank every one who attended the sale in the seats and on-line with a special thank you to all the bidders and buyers.
It was hard to see my genetics go. But I don’t plan to leave the breed, I’m just taking a year off to address my health issues.
The sale was a success with the 57 lots averaging $3,660. The genetics went to nine states. The furthest west was Oregon and Alabama on the east.
I want to thank all my friends, past and present customers and fellow breeders for all your support.
I’m already getting excited and looking forward to the fun of rebuilding my herd again.

GW view from the board
Pull-Through Demand By Scott Starr
H
ello to all. I am honored and very humbled— mostly humbled—to represent the American Gelbvieh Association as your current president. I first want to thank everyone in the past who has held this position. It is a very challenging job and one I will do everything in my capabilities to continue the tremendous leadership of our past. However, it is never about the person calling the meeting to order and conducting business; it’s about the grassroots efforts of the membership through committees bringing ideas to the board to develop into programs that move our breed forward. The AGA Board of Directors must take these ideas and hammer out details that match our goals as an association, demands of the industry, make them fit into our budget and strategic plan. As many know, we are currently working on a new long-range strategic plan for the years of 2017 through 2021. Our association has been an industry leader in innovation of ideas to push the beef industry forward. This focus has continued for many years and the new plan will continue to do the same. The success of our breeders in “pull-through demand” could essentially be the title. Creating demand for our customers’ Gelbvieh and Balancer®- influenced cattle is a point of my personal direction. Through our last strategic plan, we have started to create feedlot demand for Balancer calves. We now need to solidify that we are the Continental breed that feedlots demand universally. Much of the increased demand can be contributed to the consistency of our product. Our breeders have not chased fads and single-trait selected in their breeding programs. As a breed, we have always kept performance in mind while improving marbling, which has propelled us to the top of demand amongst the largest cattle feeders of the U.S. Now we need to get all of the cattle industry on board and informed of the strengths that we bring to the table and with our known strength of maternal we will achieve “pullthrough demand”.
6 | JANUARY 2017
Breeding selections will be of utmost importance, as they always are, to continue to propel the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed to its deserved credentials. It is once again breeding time for many and I encourage all of you to use all available tools in your selection process. Use the AGA Online Registry Service and breeder information as much as possible and I insist you don’t forget to go look at them because phenotype will always matter. Make sure they are wide based, have good feet under them and analyze any other trait that is hard to measure and not available on databases. Many of these are called convenience traits but as operations get larger and place less emphasis on labor they will become more than convenience and more of absolutely needed traits before any other breeding decisions are made. With that said, the AGA is currently in a data collection and planning phase for evaluation of foot soundness in our cattle. It is a subjective measure, but with third party verification it can be achieved. Additionally, the AGA registry will be implementing a new stayability model with much improved information leading to the EPD. Heifer exposure data is a must. It drives our heifer pregnancy EPD, which has influence on other EPDs, namely $Cow. We are the maternal leader of the U.S. beef cowherd and we must verify we have the best data driving our EPDs. If we turn in all the data we can collect, it will help achieve these improved accuracies and when that is done our indices become some of the most accurate in the industry. Trust in our database will lead to strength in the commercial sector. In addition to this trust, our customers can use our Smart Select Services to help manage their own cowherds to propel them as the suppliers of demand of the beef industry. D

GW AGA national convention
Overview of the 46th Annual AGA National Convention By Rebecca Mettler
A
merican Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members and other Gelbvieh stakeholders assembled in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the 46th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention, sponsored by GeneSeek, which was held November 30-December 2, 2016. The convention, themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands”, was a well-attended event drawing 85 AGA members from 21 states and a representative from the Canadian Gelbvieh Association. The convention opened with an AGA Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, followed by committee meetings on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Strategic planning sessions were held during the committee meetings to unveil and discuss the new Meeting Modern Industry Demands long-range strategic plan designed as a roadmap for the AGA for 2017-2021. The board of directors and staff appreciate all of the sound advice, input and ideas brought forth by the membership at these planning sessions and will work to deliberate on and incorporate these ideas into the AGA’s future goals. As it was explained in the sessions, creating long-range strategic plans are an integral part of successful association business strategies. It takes an active membership to shape and advance the goals of the AGA. Social events were held on both Wednesday and Thursday evening. Wednesday concluded with the AGA 101 and Kick-Off Reception where attendees received a warm welcome from Jeff Maul, executive director of the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, who spoke to the importance of the beef industry in Lincoln, and Nebraska. The Thursday afternoon time slot was filled with a lunch and the second annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup. During the lunch the AGA honored the 2017 AGA Hall of Fame Inductee, Dave and Cindy Judd, Pomona, Kansas. This symposium featured industry-leading speakers who covered a wide range of cattle industry topics including genomic selection, market predictions and feeder calf marketing. Convention attendees had the opportunity to venture

away from the convention-site hotel on Thursday evening for the Bull Pen Session that followed Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup. Held at the Blue Blood Brewing Company in Lincoln, the Bull Pen Session was designed as an informal gathering where convention goers could meet with the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup speakers. The get-together took place on the brewery floor amongst the brewing equipment, which added to the unique experience. One of the most anticipated events of the convention was the tour of GeneSeek laboratories, which was held on Friday morning. Roughly 75 people signed up for the tour of the convention’s feature sponsor’s place of business. The 45-minute tour included a walk-through of each step in the DNA testing process and was a unique glimpse into the meticulous work that is done at GeneSeek to provide their customers with reliable DNA testing results. The annual meeting was held on Friday afternoon. Total number of membership votes during the annual meeting stayed consistent with last year’s participation. The announcement of the new slate of officers to the AGA Board of Directors can be found on page 20. The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) Board of Directors includes Mark Goes, Al Knapp, Dr. Glenn Wehner, Grant Thayer, Mary Knapp, Jim Beastrom, Jackie Leonhardt, Nancy Wilkinson and Dick Helms. The AGF also elected their executive committee for 2017. Al Knapp, will serve as president. Mark Goes, will serve as vice president. Nancy Wilkinson, was elected as secretary, and Dr. Glen Wehner, was elected as treasurer. The finance committee of the AGF was also elected; Brian Dunn will serve as chairman along with Walter Teeter, Dr. Glenn Wehner, Grant Thayer and Paul Wade. Jim Milani and Rob Arnold were elected to the AGF Governance Committee. The convention concluded with the American Gelbvieh Foundation Awards Banquet, which honored recipients of the AGA Breeder of the Year, Samee Charriere, Clarkston, Wash., and AGA Commercial Producer of the Year, Barry Higgins, Russellville, Ky. Winners of the 2016 AGF Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Carcass Contest were announced. The AGA would like to thank all of the members and industry partners who attended the 46th Annual AGA National Convention. Complete coverage of convention will appear in the March 2017 edition of the Gelbvieh World. It’s also not too early to put the 47th Annual AGA National Convention on the calendar. Plan to be in Wichita, Kansas, on November 30 through December 2, 2017. D

GW steer challenge
Breeders Win Big During Inaugural Gelbvieh Carcass Contest
R
esults of the inaugural American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Contest were announced during the 46th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention awards banquet on Friday, December 3. Breeders from Kansas, Nebraska, and Illinois took home top honors with prize payouts totaling $7,900. The AGF continues to help advance the Gelbvieh breed through its support of research and development. For this reason, the AGF launched its first ever Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Testing Contest. These two projects together provide the information and funds necessary to generate datasets to advance Gelbvieh and Balancer® carcass merit. The AGF Steer Challenge was a competition amongst individual Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced steers in which the judging criteria focused on average daily gain in the feedyard, carcass value and overall top value animal, which combined average daily gain and carcass value. The Steer Challenge gives an opportunity for participants to donate a steer to the AGF. All proceeds from the donation go toward research and development within the Gelbvieh breed. The AGF Sire-Identified Carcass Testing Contest judges individuals steers, which were in a group of three or more animals from the same contemporary group, on these same qualities and also awarded a top-performing pen. In its first year, nine ranches participated with a total of 35 animals on feed at Roode Feedyard in Fairbury, Nebraska. All steers were harvested and values were calculated in July 2016.
LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kansas, placed high in both the AGF Steer Challenge and Balancer division of the Scale and Rail Contest and took home a total of $3,800 in prize payouts. LeDoux’s winning steer in the AGF Steer Challenge took home top carcass value and top value animal; this steer was sired by SGRI Jacked Up Z704. The same steer also took home top accolades in the Balancer division of the Scale and Rail contest including second highest average daily gain at 4.27 pounds per day, top carcass value at $1,116 with a 1,060 pound hot carcass weight and a 15.3 in2 ribeye. This steer also took home top value Balancer animal with a value of $1,120, USDA

T
here are many ways to market seedstock cattle. Many American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members host annual production sales. They usually have their sales at their ranch and it is on the same day, year after year. As a rule, these sales typically offer a relatively large number of cattle, more than 100 head. Annual production sales can work great for some breeders. It allows them to utilize the auction method of marketing to insure they receive true market value for their cattle. Having a sale during the same time of the year allows their customers to plan ahead to make their purchases. The downside to this marketing method, for some people, is that it requires a certain volume of cattle to justify the expense of hosting a production sale. Another popular way that AGA members market cattle is through private treaty sales. This allows a more of a personal connection with the buyer. It gives the seller the opportunity to share their goals for their program and their philosophy with their customers. It also gives the seller a chance to better understand their customers’ needs and help them select cattle that will be a good fit for them. The disadvantage is private treaty sales take a lot of time. Showing bulls here and there can eat up a lot of time as there are still a lot of “tire kickers out there that just like to go look at bulls. Another drawback to private treaty sales it that you may be missing out on some premium prices on your best bulls. With an auction, you are more likely to receive the best price for your product. Advancements in marketing opportunities have been made with improvements in technology. Today, many producers broadcast their production sales via the internet. This allows them to reach a larger audience and expand their customer base. Another type of web-based marketing is a timed auction platform. In this type of marketing, a seller will picture and video their cattle and put them on an online auction site. The cattle are then offered for sale via the
16 | JANUARY 2017
auction with an end time. At the end of the time, just as in a live auction, the highest bid wins. This method of marketing is become more popular every day. The American Gelbvieh Association sees the value of web-based marketing and has joined forces with BidOnTheBlock.com to offer the AGA membership the opportunity to host their own online auctions. This will give smaller breeders the advantage of the auction method of marketing without having to have the volume that is required to host a conventional production onsite sale. GelbviehAuction.com and BalancerAuction.com will offer great opportunities to market cattle whether it is bulls, females, semen, or embryos. The online auction method of marketing will allow our members to promote and market their cattle on a very large and visible platform to help them receive top dollar for their cattle. Upcoming online sales will be listed in the GelbviehAuction.com ad that will appear monthly in the Gelbvieh World and each sale will receive an eblast promoting each online production sale. These are good marketing opportunities but the seller should also advertise and promote their production sale both nationally and locally as well. Again, just as in a live auction, good pictures and video are a must. It is always important to present your program and your product in the most professional way possible. We are excited to be working with BidOnTheBlock. com in offering this service to the membership of the AGA. This will be a great opportunity to add value to Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics and give members a new method in marketing. Check out GelbviehAuction. com and BalancerAuction.com today! D

GW over the fence
with Superior Livestock Auction By Angela Vesco
S
uperior Livestock Auction (SLA) was started in 1987 to market load lots of cattle via satellite. Today, SLA is the biggest satellite video auction in the United States. Superior Livestock Auction is a valued industry partner of the AGA and we thought it would be great for the readers to get to know SLA. We visited with Beth Brian, marketing assistant for SLA.
What is the process of marketing cattle through SLA? Marketing “The Superior Way” begins with a visit from your Superior representative. The key to a successful and beneficial transaction begins with a well-respected representative, who can accurately represent the cattle and help facilitate the sale. The representative views the cattle in their natural surroundings and completes a consignment contract that describes the livestock and the terms and conditions of the sale. The representative will also record a video of a fair representation of the cattle. The consignment contract is submitted to the Brush, Colorado, office where the catalog is prepared. The Video Auction catalog can be viewed on the internet one week prior to the auction and the listing and the video can be viewed on the internet at any time. On auction day, buyers and sellers can either be present at the auction site or view the auction via a nationwide satellite broadcast on Dish Network channel 232 or the internet. The Video and Internet Auctions are conducted live with an auctioneer. As cattle are sold to buyers bidding at the auction site, via telephone or on the internet “Click to Bid” website. Once the cattle are sold, a livestock contract stating the terms and conditions of the sale is prepared and sent to both the buyer and seller. Following the auction, the Superior representative contacts all parties to arrange the delivery. On the day of delivery, the Superior representative is present to oversee the sorting and loading of the cattle. The cattle are shipped directly from the seller’s farm or ranch to the buyer. From the time the Superior representative completes
18 | JANUARY 2017
the consignment contract with the seller until the time the cattle are loaded onto the buyer’s truck, personal hands-on attention is given to the make sure the sales contract is followed completely.
What benefits the producer from marketing their cattle on SLA? Producers can show their cattle in their home environment, which is low stress and allows them to tell their own story. Video marketing allows seller’s access to the largest number of potential buyers executing the truest form of price discovery. Cattle are shipped directly from seller’s operation to the buyer’s destination greatly reducing potential health risks and shipping cost helping to improve the bottom line. The seller gets to deal directly with their trusted Superior Livestock representative.
What is the Country Page? Superior originally was derived to market and sell load lots of cattle, with an ever changing industry and Superior’s dedication to remain an industry leader, Superior had developed several other outlets to help market cattle via video. Superior Livestock’s Country Page is an internet trading video marketing platform that offers cattle 24/7 immediately available throughout the country accessible through online bidding. The Country Page is equipped with topnotch customer service that can help you find the specific type of cattle to fit an individual’s needs.
What does Superior Productions do for seedstock producers to market their bulls and females? Superior Progressive Genetics creates a premium to both seedstock producers and their bull-buying customers by branding the seedstock producer’s logo on-screen for qualified lots on Superior Livestock’s bi-monthly cattle auctions. One good thing about the program is that it is really starting to see a premium for the commercial cattle producers but at the same time it is offering some really great national exposure for seedstock producers alike.
How many reps does SLA have? Today there are more than 380 representatives nationwide that market over 1 million head of cattle annually. Because of its commitment to innovation and utilization of the best technology available, Superior has grown to become the largest livestock auction in the
over the fence GW United States.
How do you find a rep in your area? If you are interested in finding a local Superior Representative in your area login on to our website: www.superiorlivestock.com and under the Contact tab we have a “Find a Representative” page; you are able to search by name or location. Of course if have never worked with a Superior representative we encourage you to call our Fort Worth office at 800422-2117 where we will be able to best match a representative to you and your operation’s specific needs.
What makes SLA unique? Not only has Superior Livestock Auction been instrumental in changing the way America buys their livestock, they have also worked to shape a national cattle market and were influential in the progressive movement to better cattle health and genetics through The Superior Value Added Program, which continues to deliver value for both buyer and sellers. With value added premium programs, Superior has proven the ability and consistency to reward consigners with deserved premiums. Load lots of cattle that are backed by established health protocols, buyer friendly trends and known genetics are creating premiums for Superior’s sellers. “All the things we do technology wise are done for customer service. A big part of customer service is serve so that’s what we do and what we have been about since 1987.” explained Joe Lichtie Vice President of Superior Livestock Auction. This is one thing we continue to believe sets Superior Livestock Auction apart and has for over 30 years! Video marketing grew out of a need and has quickly become one of the most sought after forms of marketing livestock. Video marketing
is a simple, cost effective, professional way to market cattle. For more information on marketing your cattle “The Superior Way” please visit www.superiorlivestock.com or call us at 800-422-2117. D

2017 Herd Assessment
H
erd assessments are open from January 1 to March 15, 2017, in the AGA Online Registry Service. This is a way to track Total Herd Reporting and show intention for which cows you expect to calve during that calendar By Kim Rounds year. It tends to fall over a crazy time of year with spring sale season picking up, convention, the Holidays are winding down, and National Western Stock Show fall somewhere in the middle. Life can get hectic, so we promise to keep the process of herd assessments as simple as possible. I hope to answer some frequently asked questions and introduce everyone to our new heifer exposure data requirements.
Finding Your Herd Assessment: Once you log into your account you can find Herd Assessments in the left-hand column under “Herd Management”, then “Inventory”.
Under “Inventory” find “Assessment-Age” in the white tabs that run across the top of the screen. Under this tab is a list of all females that are of breeding age, or that would be expected to calve in the upcoming year. For any young heifers that may not be 13 months of age as of January 1st, but are expected to have a calf in the upcoming year, look under “Optional Females”.
22 | JANUARY 2017
registry tips ‘n tricks GW Completing Herd Assessments and Culling Cows: Once looking at your list of assessment age females, you now have the ability to cull cows that are no longer in your herd and record any exposure data that you may not have yet recorded. To dispose of a cow, click on the grey trashcan to the right of her birthdate. Use the drop-down menu to select the specific reason why she is no longer in your herd, then click the green checkmark to lock that selection in. Remember that this is not a tool to be used to indicate that a cow has skipped a year of calving, this is a tool to permanently dispose of a cow from your herd. With total herd reporting we seek all information: good, bad, or indifferent. To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. If you do try to skip a year of calving information for a cow, you will have to pay for all of the years that she has been “disposed of ” if you ever want to record a calf in the future. After making all necessary culls and disposals you can select each cow individually by clicking the “2017” button in the “Assess for” column, or complete all cows at one time by clicking “Complete yearly HAS process – Assess all for 2017”, at the top of the page under “Assessment-Age”. After completing your assessment, you can pay your balance online by following the pop-up box that takes you to a check out screen. You do have 30 days to pay any balance incurred on your account.
NEW FOR 2017 This year, we are requiring all first-calf heifers (and first-calf heifers only) to have exposure data recorded on them. This sounds like more work when completing Herd Assessments, but as I promised earlier, we will strive to keep this process as simple as possible. As of January 1st, on the Herd Assessment page, there will be a box next to all heifers expected to have their first calf in a 2017 calving season. If you exposed that heifer to a bull or AIed her during the previous breeding season, simply check the box “PE”, which stands for previously exposed, “AI”, or “No”. You can also check both “PE” and “AI”. As always, if you have questions call into the office and we would be happy to help. Also, if you need to request a printed Herd Assessment form, please make that request with sufficient time to receive it, complete it, and return it o the office before the March 15 deadline. D

Alfalfa Hay as a Protein Supplement Ken Olson Professor & SDSU Extension Beef Specialist SDSU Animal Science Department
L
ots of data and producer experience support the importance of protein supplementation with low quality forages or winter grazing. An overriding issue is that protein supplements are often expensive and should be avoided if they are not needed. If they are needed, then it is wise to shop around for the best value for the dollar spent.
Base Forage Quality First, be sure that the base forage is truly low quality that requires a protein supplement. The general rule of thumb is that low-quality forage is defined as containing 7% crude protein or less. This is based on 7% being the minimum protein content needed to support a viable population of rumen microbes. Once crude protein falls below that level, the rumen microbial population will not be large enough to digest the fiber in the diet. The second requirement to meet is that of the animal. In the case of a beef cow in mid-gestation at this time of year, the protein requirement is also about 7% of the diet. Once she enters the last trimester of gestation, that requirement will increase to about 8% of her diet. Forage Analysis: It becomes very important to have forage analysis done on feedstuffs to determine whether they are deficient in protein or not. The cost of a feed analysis of about $50 may save thousands of dollars being unnecessarily spent on an unneeded supplement. Sampling hay is relatively straight-forward. Use a core sample on several bales. Sampling a pasture is a little more complicated because grazing livestock are selective.
Forage Protein Supplements Any feedstuff that contains high enough concentration of protein to overcome the deficiency in low-quality forages can serve as a protein supplement. Alfalfa Benefits: Alfalfa hay makes an ideal protein supplement. The protein in alfalfa hay is highly digestible and available in the rumen to feed the rumen microbes. Because of this, it stimulates digestion of the fiber in both the
24 | JANUARY 2017
alfalfa and the low-quality forage. This stimulation of digestion also increases intake of the low-quality forage, and as result improves the total digested nutrients that the cow (or any other ruminant) receives. Research conducted at Kansas State University in the early 1990s demonstrated that good quality alfalfa hay was equally effective compared to a traditional protein cake based on soybean meal and milo grain. Not only did it provide a similar stimulus in digestion and intake of the low-quality forage, but also similar cow weight and body condition score through the winter, and it actually yielded a slightly higher pregnancy rate the next fall (88 and 96% for cake and alfalfa hay, respectively). Additional research at Oregon State University indicated that the quality of the alfalfa hay is relatively unimportant, as long as more alfalfa is fed when its quality is lower so that the same amount of protein is supplied. Please bear in mind this not suggesting a diet consisting of only alfalfa hay. Using alfalfa as a supplement means that a few pounds are fed (just enough to overcome the protein deficiency), and the cow is expected to fill the rest of her daily intake needs with the low quality forage.
Cost Considerations Finally, is alfalfa hay the best value for the dollar spent? The answer boils down to the delivered cost per ton of protein. For example, we can assume the purchase options are either alfalfa hay with 18% crude protein at $90 per ton, or a 20% protein cake at $180 per ton. The cost per ton of protein is $562 for alfalfa and $1059 for the cake. These calculations are made on a dry matter basis assuming the dry matter content for alfalfa hay is 89% and cake is 85%. The best value as a protein supplement is provided by the alfalfa. Be sure that the prices used here include the cost of delivery, both from the source to your place and the cost of feeding it to the cows. Delivery to the cows may vary depending on the equipment needed for each (i.e. tractor vs. pickup, bale feeders vs. bunks, etc.). The nice thing about using hay as a supplement is that most producers are already equipped to handle it. If you produced the alfalfa hay, then it can be priced at the cost of production, which will usually be favorable compared to the cost of purchased feedstuffs. Using alfalfa hay, especially home-grown hay, provides an opportunity to meet protein deficiencies at a relative bargain. D Courtesy of igrow.org

BeefTalk: Controlling Cow Size Aids in Controlling Cow Costs By Kris Ringwall, Beef Specialist NDSU Extension Service
“W
ould a herd of 120 smaller-framed cows be a better fit than a herd of 100 larger-framed cows?” is an often-asked question throughout the beef industry. The number of cows will vary, but for the sake of answering the question, let’s set the herd size as 120 smallerframed cows and 100 larger-framed cows. The Dickinson Research Extension Center has explored the question since the mid ’90s. Recently, we summarized some thoughts as we explored cow size, expanded the forage base, adopted May-June calving and retained ownership of calves. The net result was a 10 percent increase in revenue for the smaller-framed cows, when compared with the larger-framed cows, based on steer calf performance. Although the smaller-framed cows’ revenue per finished steer was lower, $821.81 versus larger-framed cows at $895.82, the total finished steer net return was $4,517 greater from the smaller-framed cow herd. The final check showed smaller-framed cows earned $49,308 ($821.81 times 60 steers), while larger-framed cows earned $44,791 ($895.82 times 50 steers). The small-framed cow stocking rate was 20 percent more, resulting in the sale of 20 percent more steer calves. This data is the result of research funded through the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program and reported by visiting scholar Songul Şentürklü and center animal scientist Doug Landblom. In the fall, the traditional center cows average approximately 1,450 pounds. The smaller-framed, Lowlineinfluenced cow weighed in at approximately 1,100 pounds. These are data that generate more questions. In fact, cow size is a very debated and discussed beef topic, and it’s certainly a topic on the agenda for many beef producers because controlling costs is a major beef production issue. Reviewing the data from years 2012 through 2014, following the switch to May-June calving, provides more

insight to help answer producer questions. The center has identified three major cost-cutting points: First is a later calving date to decrease labor. Second is an intensified multiple-crop rotation that includes cover crops, harvesting some crops and grazing the majority of the acreages by cows, calves and yearlings to lower overhead Third is controlling cow size to decrease inputs and increase ranch output. Leading the pack, and certainly eligible for boss cow status, were three cows just under a ton. The next 30 cows weighed from 1,895 to 1,700 pounds. The center had 86 cows that weighed from 1,695 to 1,500 pounds and 90 cows that weighed in at 1,490 to 1,305 pounds. As the cows got lighter, 52 cows weighed from 1,295 to 1,100 pounds. The 64 lightest cows weighed in under 1,100 pounds. Because many factors affect cow size, several thoughts came to mind. The first factor is age, followed by breed, environment, nutritional history, stage of production and many other factors. As a result of wanting to better understand the impact of cow size, the center essentially sold off the really big cows and the really small cows and split the remaining cows into what we would call a more traditional herd, with a targeted weight of 1,450 pounds, and a smaller-framed herd targeted to weigh 300 pounds lighter, at 1,150 pounds. At this point, when a producer keeps calves to finish and takes advantage of appropriate stocking rates and practices good sire selection, controlling cow size is positive. Keep in mind, controlling cow size does not mean a particular size of cow will work everywhere because each operation and environment may support a particular size of cow. However, controlling cow size does mean knowing one’s cows and what they weigh so that appropriate stocking rates can be achieved and implemented. The other factor is sire selection. Herd sires that control frame, but support desired gain and carcass characteristics, need to be utilized. As a caution, decreasing the size of cattle is easy to do, thereby decreasing herd performance. However, the astute producers understand the genetics of cattle size and only then set out to decrease cow size with increased herd performance. Questions remain, but for now, controlling cow size will help reduce costs and may add income. D

GW junior connection
A New Year for New Change By Kyle Vehige
I
would first like to start off by saying I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas season and that everyone got to spend time with family. Being in college so far from home gets hard at times and spending time with family is what I cherish most. Now that Christmas has passed, the New Year’s holiday season is upon us. Many families will all sit down and talk about the traditional New Year’s resolutions and I would like to talk about resolutions as well.
Holthus, the official voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, and who is also motivational speaker. Holthus made a board for our junior association. On the board were simple goals that our juniors created for our association. The goals read: investing in our youth, member participation, association growth, strive to improve breed consistency, be the conduit, improve breeder and consumer education, and family. I think we should set these goals as our association’s New Year’s resolution. Because these goals came from our juniors I feel it is important to work on these goals as best as we can.
As many of our members know, we hosted the 2016 Power Conference last August. For those who didn’t get the chance to go I will explain briefly a major object that was brought to our junior board. The group was fortunate enough to hear from Mitch

As I read these goals a few stick out to me, be the conduit and family catch my attention the quickest. How does one person be the conduit? Well of course it is hard for one person to hold an association together, but if our Gelbvieh family works together on being the conduit, we can achieve great things. As a junior program, I think we have a great set of members that all care deeply about our wonderful breed of cattle. The reason family stuck

junior connection GW out to me is because I think our association is so different from any of the others. I have been blessed with opportunities to go help many different breeds at their junior events, and as I walked around Simmental junior nationals, the Maine Anjou shows in both Kansas City and Louisville, I noticed one thing; they all had juniors who got along, but not everyone knew each other and hung out. I encourage our youth to branch out and meet new people because even though

I was at other breed shows I could still smile because I knew our breed was unlike any other. Juniors, thank your parents for allowing you to go to shows and be a part of our Gelbvieh family, because that is exactly what we are, a family. I am proud to be a part of such a great organization; I encourage all to look at our New Year’s resolutions and for each of us to do our part to help the association complete these goals. I hope everyone has a blessed holiday season! D through Morehead State, Maysville Community and Technical College, and Murray State University. Along with AGJA, McCarty is also active in 4-H and FFA where she has held many leadership roles and competed in numerous contests and livestock projects including beef breeding and market steers, sheep and swine. he Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Mr. Jimmy Christopher. Mr. Christopher was former herdsman for Gelbvieh Bar None Ranch who lost his battle with cancer. This year, two American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AJGA) members were selected to receive $750 scholarships. The winners were announced at the 2016 NAILE Showcase Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale in Louisville, Kentucky. Caitlin Griffin, Westminster, South Carolina, and Haley McCarty, Maysville, Kentucky were the scholarship winners. Caitlin Griffin is the granddaughter of Ricky and Judy Griffin. She is attending Tri-County Technical College with plans to transfer to Clemson University once she receives her associate degree at Tri-County. Griffin is active in AGJA with a position on the AGJA Board of Directors. She is also a the leader of the South Carolina Heritage Fair livestock exhibits and the Oconee County South Carolina Farm Bureau Ambassador. Griffin’s long-term goals include becoming a county extension agent and raising her own herd of show-quality Gelbvieh. Haley McCarty is the daughter of Tara McCarty. She will graduate from Mason County High School in 2017 but is taking online dual-credit college courses

Online Resource to Assist Producers with Reproductive Management By Rebecca Mettler
P
roducers are inundated left and right with educational material to use for improve their beef cattle operations. The topic of reproductive management is no different; there are many online resource websites to gather information. Beef producers, both seedstock and cowcalf operators, are required to develop a high level of understanding of reproductive technology if they intend to incorporate technologies such as AI, Timed-AI and estrus synchronization. There’s one resource site in particular that
Bull Barn Genetics
For all your AI needs:
is very well organized and places all relevant information regarding reproductive management in place. It’s worth taking a look! The Resource Page of the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle is provided to cattle producers by the Beef Reproduction Task Force, which is a multi-state extension activity in cooperation with the North Central Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leaders Committee and the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, according to the website. Visit http://beefrepro.unl.edu/resources.html for reproductive management information from the following universities: Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Florida, University of Missouri, South Dakota State University, University of Idaho and University of Nebraska. Once on the page, you will find a free estrus synchronization planner to help select and implement the right estrus synchronization protocol for your operation. The website has the 2017 estrus synchronization protocol charts for both cows and heifers as well as in-depth articles to explain the estrous cycle and other components of a successful reproductive program. At Cranview Gelbvieh, we believe in “Balanced Genetics”. We define this concept in our breeding program as a balanced combination of traits. These traits include attractive phenotypes, proven pedigrees, growth and performance, and the ability to grade on the rail. Check out the data above on our most recent load of finished cattle. Furthermore, we take our selection criteria one step further than most. We performance test our bulls and replacement females and incorporate the latest DNA technology. The goal of our program is to produce females and bulls that will fulfill the needs of the commercial cattleman, the demands of the beef industry and the satisfaction of the consumer. The six donor females below represent the maternal power of our program and 29 of their progeny will be featured in our Annual Progress and Performance Sale.

GW body condition
Proper Winter Supplemental Feeding can Optimize Future Breeding By Adam Russel Communications Specialist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
G
etting or keeping cows in proper body condition throughout the winter can optimize pregnancy rates the following season, said a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. Dr. Jason Banta, beef cattle specialist, Overton, said cows with proper body condition scores at calving are more likely to breed back and produce healthy calves in the future. Proper nutrition and supplementation are two keys to keeping cows in good shape. Banta said 2-and 3-year-old cows should have a body condition score of 6 or better at calving. Cows 4-yearsold and older should be in a body condition score of 5 or greater at calving. Cows with a body condition score of 5 should display abundant muscle tissue. Ribs are noticeable but overall fat cover is lacking. Hooks and pins are less obvious and hips and backbone are slightly rounded versus a sharp appearance, according to the AgriLife Extension overviews. A body condition score of 6 represents cows that are ideal at calving. Ribs are covered completely with fat and beginning to cover the rump, and muscle tissue is at its greatest. Hay should be tested for nutritional quality, which will give producers the necessary information to help determine supplementation requirements, Banta said. Any supplementation plan should be based on three primary criteria – the nutrient requirements of the animal, the quality of available hay or roughage, and the current condition of the cows. Winter supplementation will depend greatly on what stage of production the cow is in, Banta said. Lactating
54 | JANUARY 2017
cows require different amounts of supplementation than dry cows, those pregnant but not nursing a calf. “When evaluating pasture or hay, consider the nutrient requirements of the cow,” Banta said. For example, to maintain its body condition, a lactating cow would require hay that is about 11.5 percent protein and 62-63 percent total digestible nutrients, or TDN. A dry cow in late gestation would need about 8 percent protein and 55 percent TDN. Producers should select supplements based on the cost per unit of nutrient needed, Banta said. Cubes are a common supplement used by many producers. If both energy and protein supplementation are needed, a 20 percent cube would likely be most cost effective, he said. However, if only a protein supplement is needed, then a 40 percent cube is more cost effective. Banta said producers should start slow and build up with supplements, such as concentrates and grains, because cows are designed to consume grasses. It’s also important to feed them supplements consistently each day to avoid digestive problems such as acidosis, which can lead to founder, foot abscesses, damage to the rumen lining damage, or death. He recommends starting with no more than 2 pounds of supplement per cow per day and slowly building up from there. Banta said producers should watch manure patties to monitor cows’ protein intake. “If patties look like they are stacking up and are firm, that tells us we need more protein supplement,” Banta said. A 40 percent cube is a good concentrated supplement source of protein, he said. Generally speaking, if cows are in good condition then 1-1.5 pounds of a 40 percent cube or something similar is a good place to start for dry cows; 2-3 pounds per day would likely be needed for wet cows, Banta said. If cows also need energy, then something like a 20 percent cube could be a good option. With average quality hay, a common feeding rate for dry cows would be about 2-3 pounds per day per cow or 4-6 pounds for wet cows. “Feeding amounts really depend on hay quality and other factors, so for more information I recommend visiting with a nutritionist or an AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist,” Banta said.
