CAREER EXPLORATION FOR TOMORROW’S INDUSTRY LEADERS by LAURA HANDKE

n continued efforts to provide educational resources and opportunities to its membership and the industry, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) hosted a special webinar geared toward providing career education to the next generation of producers and industry leaders. The event, Career Exploration for Tomorrow’s Industry Leaders, featured Jake Renner, former AGA member and youth activities coordinator, Of the West business owner, Jessie Jarvis, and Corteva Associate Territory Manager for Pasture and Land Management, Paxton Dahmer.

DON’T LET OPPORTUNITIES SLIP BY Agriculture is a tight knit community. This fact makes the industry both endearing and intimidating to those outside the show ring or beyond the farm gate. However, the panelists share that there really are no limitations today for opportunities within agriculture—if you can dream it, there’s a place for it, Jarvis says. “Agriculture is the biggest and brightest ocean of opportunity. Whatever you’re dreaming, there’s likely a great outlet in agriculture. From photography to

computer engineering and everything in between, there’s just really no limitation today,” she says. “For those who are involved in agriculture, be kind and encouraging. It’s going to take us all and we need more people in our industry. We have an opportunity to share agriculture with so many today, it only takes our time to walk alongside and show someone the way.” All three panelists agree that an early introduction to what agriculture has to offer, followed-up with additional education throughout the academic career of every student is a vehicle the industry should be investing in.

The one-hour webinar framed the career paths of each panelist, complete with the specific classes that they continue to find value in; the webinar lays the foundation for career discovery, hard and soft skills, transferrable education and the necessity to remain nimble and open minded to opportunity. SALE REPORTS TJB GELBVIEH MATERNAL MAGIC XII BULL SALE REPORT Reported by Todd Bickett, DVM TJB Gelbvieh welcomed an enthusiastic crowd for the Maternal Magic XII Bull Sale on November 4, 2023, on a beautiful fall day in Chickamauga, Georgia. The bidding from the crowd as well as the internet was fabulous, and the sale average was $5,206 on 44 fall yearling bulls. TJB Victorio 268K, a black, calving ease son of 348Z (A Vickie Vail descendant) sold to Warner Beef Genetics for $9,500. He is an exciting sire to look for in the future for both programs as he packages phenomenal length and thickness in a calving ease package. Tying for the high seller was TJB 873F Patton 2126K. He too possesses outstanding calving ease with loads of power. This red bull sold to David Huggins, Jr. also for $9,500. It was

8 | GELBVIEH WORLD

David’s dad who turned me on to Gelbvieh cattle in 1987. David is starting to put together a great set of red females to go with this stylish son of 873F. Selling to a long-time friend and fellow Auburn veterinarian was another red 873F son, TJB 873F Baller 299K for $9,250. He went to Brian Dyer and his family at Dyer Farms. This bull was the favorite for many visitors this season. Warner Beef Genetics struck again to add TJB Acuna 214K for $9,000. This bull is a full brother to TJB Anissa 954G who sells in the National Sale in Oklahoma City. When Dan and Kate visited this summer, they were quick to recognize not only the quality of 954G, but also the impact the dam of these two,

579C, has had on the herd. Consequently, they chose this sire to inject the Anissa influence. Also coming in at $9,000, was the Lot 1 bull, TJB Addiction 286K. He is a Saguaro son by 823F, a full sister to Rebel Yell. He sold to Deibler Gelbvieh.

Bulls sold to a record 15 states and were consistent throughout the offering. As always at TJB Gelbvieh, the finest in southern hospitality was extended and three meals were served throughout the event. We would love to see you on November 2, 2024, for the next big event!F

Other notable sale features included Lot 18 selling to Jesse Little for $8,800. Lots 15 and 8 selling to Black Crest Farms for $7,700 and $7,500. Lot 34, a Rebel Yell son sold to Keaton Killian for $8,500.

MERCK TOUR T

he attendees of the 53rd Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention spent the morning of November 30, touring the Merck Animal Health processing facility in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Attendees were able to split into various rotations to learn more about the production process, sanitation and lab equipment, and product packaging. While attendees were no strangers to the shortages of certain products experienced in the previous years, they were able to learn the ins and outs of animal pharmaceutical supply and demand. Additionally, attendees got an inside look at the sanitation and quality control practices of all equipment and products to prevent product shortages in the future. Attendees got a sneak peek at the new product packaging line that will increase production which means products on shelves quicker for producer availability. We thank Merck Animal Health for hosting this year’s tour!F

Quality Drives Carcass Value by MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

C

attlemen’s Profit Roundup attendees were joined by Dr. Scott Howard, Meyer Natural Foods director of operations, for his presentation titled “Quality Drivers and Value Determination in the Beef Packing Sector.” Howard began his presentation by reviewing the current state of factors influential to quality and carcass value which will include quality grade, yield grade and weight. Quality grade is influenced by marbling, maturity and chill time. “At Meyer Natural Foods, we have increased quality grade by five percent through implementing a weekend chill,” said Howard. Yield grade is influenced by the fat thickness opposite the ribeye, ribeye area and kidney, pelvic and heart fat. The fat thickness opposite the ribeye measurement calculates the preliminary yield grade of the carcass and is adjusted for fat elsewhere on the carcass. Ribeye area only accounts for five percent variation in the yield grade equation. The ribeye area is adjusted relative to the

12 | GELBVIEH WORLD

hot carcass weight. Additionally, kidney, pelvic and heart fat is included in the adjusted yield grade and is expressed as a percentage of the hot carcass weight. Hot carcass weight greatly influences packer profitability through their fixed costs of labor, packaging, storage and water. Moving forward, carcass value determination will include marbling, product differentiation, yield and carcass weight. “Product differentiation is very important because the packer has to be able to sell the entire carcass, not just the ribeyes and strips,” explained Howard. Howard also discussed potential changes to the yield grade equation that will move away from the current four variable equation and focus more on yield optimization through carcass composition. The two most dynamic variables of carcass composition are bone and fat which need a larger importance in the yield grade equation. Additionally, traceability will play a larger role in yield calculations as new technology allows the packer to track each cut back to the original carcass to increase the accuracy of the yield equation.

Breed type will continue to be a large indicator of carcass value determination as they each have their strengths and shortcomings. The beef on dairy space is gaining market share as the carcasses are very lean and produce an extremely tender product. Mexican-origin cattle are high-yielding but are low-marbling. Whereas, native beef breeds have the best chance at qualifying for premium programs, they do have an increased potential for excess fat. Carcass value determination is highly driven by quality so it is important for producers to not only raise cattle that yield, but the cattle must also grade to capitalize on carcass premiums as quality is the largest driver of beef profitability. Learning from the Data

by MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

The U.S. cattle industry cannot expect improvements in prices for its products or by-products when ‘quality’ doesn’t warrant such increases,” as stated in the 1991 National Beef Quality Audit. The 2022 National Beef Quality Survey results were presented during Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup at the 53rd Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, by Michaela Clowser, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association director of producer education.

purchase. Predominately beef cattle are purchased then dairy,” explained Clowser. “This year, companies reported that they were purchasing beef x dairy cross cattle. This is the first audit that this has been reported.”

The National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) focuses on the physical attributes of beef and beef by-products such as marbling, external fat, carcass weight and carcass blemishes. These concerns have evolved to also include food safety, sustainability, animal well-being and the disconnect between beef producers and consumers. The audit is designed to address the lost opportunities of beef production resulting in an inefficiency cost of $458 per head.

Study participants were asked what the term “cattle genetics” means to their company with answers concluding that genetics directly dictate the quality of the end-product. Most participants in each sector of the industry recognized that quality genetics improve the beef herd thus producing a higher-quality product for the consumer.

The data from the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit was collected under extraordinary circumstances due to supply chain disruptions and cattle backlog from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, weather impacts such as ongoing drought across the country influenced the results to reflect the state of the industry at the time. The audit is divided into two phases: interviewing buyers of beef and conducting in-plant data collection. The objective of the first phases of interviews is to interview employees making cattle or beef purchasing decisions across four market sectors and secondarily related Government and Trade Organizations (GTO). The four participating sectors were packers, retailers, food service and further processors. “We always like to start out by asking what type of cattle these companies

14 | GELBVIEH WORLD

The audit revealed that black-hided cattle increased to 62% from 58% in 2016 and 45% in 2000. The Holstein hide color decreased to 12.3%; confirming the industry trend of beef sires being used on dairy cattle.

“When looking back at the 2016 audit, these companies associated genetics with breed and breed characteristics, so we’ve come a long way in a short amount of time about these companies seeing the importance of cattle genetics,” said Clowser. In-plant research is designed to capture data on quality and yield grade attributes and carcass defects to compare with previous audits to assess industry progress in improving quality. This research also provides a benchmark for future industry educational and research efforts. Heat stress and other environmental factors resulted in an increase of bruising, dark cutters and heart issues as well as decreased mobility. Almost 92% of cattle received a desired mobility score of one, with the animal walking easily and normally with no apparent lameness. This was a decrease from 96% in 2016 and can be attributed to larger cattle and longer time spent during transport.

The 2022 NBQA displayed the highest frequency of 52.3% carcass bruising since the audits began. This increased bruising frequency should be addressed through facility and trailer design as well as cattle handler training. Nearly 93% of transportation service providers interviewed were familiar with the Beef Quality Assurance Transportation (BQAT) program and 91% are BQAT certified. The audit revealed significant changes in the number of carcasses grading USDA Prime and USDA Choice. In 2022, 76% graded USDA Prime and USDA Choice, with 7.5% USDA Prime and 68.3% USDA Choice. There was a 3.7% increase in carcasses grading USDA Prime between the 2016 and 2022 audits. This impressive improvement requires good genetics and management, but it starts with genetics. While the industry continues to improve the quality of the beef being produced, the quality has come with increased hot carcass weights and fat thickness, resulting in an increase of Yield Grade 4 and 5 carcasses. Improved genetics can aid in maintaining the Yield Grade 3 or better of carcasses, while maintaining the marbling necessary to achieve desired quality grades. Producers are encouraged to utilize advancements in genetic selection technologies to breed for carcasses with increased eating satisfaction, uniformity and the desired end-product specifications. The 2022 NBQA results can be utilized by those in all segments of beef production to improve current management practices and implement new innovative techniques to enhance consistency and quality of cattle and beef products through each sector of the beef supply chain. Genetics: The Foundation of End Product Quality by MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

T

he 2023 Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup concluded with Dr. Matt Spangler, University of NebraskaLincoln beef genetics specialist, giving his presentation titled, “Making Genetic Progress and Why End Product Quality Matters to Seedstock Producers”. Spangler began his presentation with a discussion on the simplified breeding pyramid in the beef industry. The base of the pyramid includes the packer, retailer, and consumer, which moves to commercial producers, multiplier herds and to the top with nucleus Seedstock herds. Genetics flow down the pyramid from nucleus breeders and economics flow up the pyramid. However, there is a substantial lag in both directions. Nucleus herds provide the genetics that move the breed forward and should use economic signals to influence their breeding objectives. There are many genetic components of feedlot performance and carcass traits that can be determined through EPDs. The sources of this data is records from relatives, the individual and their descendants, along with their genomic data. A genomic test on an individual can create progeny equivalents of eight to

16 | GELBVIEH WORLD

25, greatly increasing the accuracy of the specific animal’s performance. “Genetic testing can be a large expense for a seedstock operation however, genotyping is part of the cost of doing business,” explained Spangler. “A commercial producer’s business is selling phenotypes. A seedstock producer’s business is selling genotypes.” Spangler reviewed the genetic trend data from the United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) with attendees. While Gelbvieh does well in cutability with ribeye area and carcass weight, the breed ranks lower in marbling score compared to other major beef breeds. Understanding the strengths and weakness of the breed shows the importance of introgression which leverages the breed effects of other breeds. The Gelbvieh breed has capitalized on introgression by crossbreeding with Angus or Red Angus to produce Balancer® cattle. However, introgression does not mean within population selection can be ignored and the needs of the commercial cow base must be considered. For example, the influence

of Angus marbling genetics should not encourage seedstock producers to ignore the marbling genetics of their purebred Gelbvieh animals. Producers must select animals that meet their breeding objectives in both breeds to capitalize on breed strengths and combat their weaknesses. “Phenotypes will always be king. Genotypes alone tell us nothing, they must be coupled with phenotypes,” said Spangler. Genetic evaluations will be best if there is a continuous flow of phenotypes such as foot and leg scores, mature cow weights and carcass traits. The best way seedstock producers can tackle novel traits is to make them less novel. Quality phenotypes are important to improving the accuracy of genetic predictions of all traits, but especially carcass traits. Spangler left attendees with the takehome messages that seedstock producers must understand the profit drivers of their customers and their customers’ customers, and seedstock producers must use genetic selection tools to move the breed forward.F

Solutions. Additionally, Dr. Weaber introduced the new AGA indexes that are anticipated to be released in the summer of 2024. To wrap up day one, attendees made their way down the street to Upstream Brewing for the Bull Pen Session to mingle with attendees, convention sponsors and AGA staff. Day two began with loading buses bright and early to visit Merck Animal Health in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Attendees were able to learn about the vaccine production process and tour the facility where the vaccines are produced and packaged. Merck staff discussed their sanitation process, product development and the timeline it takes for a product to be created and leaves their facility until it reaches producers. Thursday afternoon was full of education during the Member Education committee meeting which hosted the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup. Attendees were able to hear from Dr. Scott Howard, Michaela Clowser and Dr. Matt Spangler. The trio addressed the opportunities to improve end-product quality to ensure Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle continue to deliver the value and make the grade. Each panelist presented individually, and the

event concluded with a panel, moderated by Joe Epperly, Wagonhammer Ranches, that answered audience questions. Day two ended with an evening of celebration with an awards banquet to honor recipients of the Breeder of the Year, Commercial Producer of the Year, and Hall of Fame awards. Winners of this year’s American Gelbvieh Foundation Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge were also announced during the banquet. The final day of convention began with a short-term economic outlook session presented by Micheal Paul and offered by the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Attendees also participated in a Neogen workshop to learn more about successful DNA testing and the journey each sample takes from start to finish at the lab. The morning finished with the AGA Annual Meeting where attendees heard from and elected new board members, reviewed committee meeting reports and discussed both old and new business. Additionally, some attendees traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, for a tour of the Neogen lab. A memorable time was had, and all departed with the excitement of the 54th Annual Convention to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, December 4-6, 2024.F

ach year the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) recognizes a dedicated member who has been an influential figure in the Gelbvieh breed. The 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductees are Mark and Patty Goes of Odell, Nebraska. The Goes were presented with their award at the 53rd Annual AGA National Convention on November 30, 2023, at the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District in Omaha, Nebraska.

Goes continued youth education outside of the classroom by implementing the live carcass evaluation contest at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic. He procured the cattle, scheduled harvest slots and explained the carcass results to the contestants. Through the creation of this contest, Goes helped connect live cattle production to the value of end-product merit and consumer demand.

In his professional career, Goes served as an instructor at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska. During his tenure, he started a Gelbvieh and Balancer® herd at the college and advocated for the breed among students by taking them to shows and sales. Many of his students have started their own Gelbvieh and Balancer herds and become members of the AGA.

Goes has served in many leadership positions throughout the beef industry. Goes is a past president of the American Gelbvieh Association, serves as an active committee member, and was the first president of the American Gelbvieh Foundation where he currently serves as the vice president. Additionally, Goes has served in multiple positions to develop

the strategic directions of many industryleading organizations. “While I’ve always known Mark is a selfless individual, it has become even more obvious while serving on the AGF board with him,” said Tanner Aherin. “When an important decision is to be made, Mark is someone who wants to vet all the outcomes and how they might impact each breeder across the country – never making himself the priority. Mark is willing to challenge the group to ensure the right decision is made that is most beneficial for all people involved in the Gelbvieh breed.” Congratulations to the 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductees, Mark and Patty Goes.F

COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

DALLAS BURTON NAMED 2023 AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR The American Gelbvieh Association named Dallas Burdton, Hitchcock, S.D., the 2023 Commercial Producer of the Year. Pictured (left to right): award presenter; Blake Hojer, Dallas Burton, and Lacey Burton.

allas Burton of Hitchcock, South Dakota, was announced as the 2023 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Commercial Producer of the Year at the 53rd Annual AGA National Convention on November 30, 2023, at the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District in Omaha, Nebraska. Burton operates DWB Farms which is a cow/calf and feedlot operation consisting of approximately 400 cows. The farm was originally a dairy operation, but when Burton took charge, he chose beef cattle as the optimal path to maximize the use of the resources they had available. Burton targeted maternal and carcass traits to move the operation forward. He started keeping his own replacement females when he realized the females, he was producing were far superior to what he could purchase.

26 | GELBVIEH WORLD

“We could never justify keeping our own replacements before, but after seeing the quality of our Gelbvieh-influenced females we couldn’t afford to not keep them,” said Burton.

results and makes adjustments where needed,” said Blake Hojer, Hojer Ranch LLC. “Most notably, his most recent load of calves graded 100% USDA Prime and Choice with 50% grading Prime.”

Burton has used the strengths of the Gelbvieh breed to move DWB Farms forward. He understands that single trait selection is not beneficial, but certain traits are very important. Selecting Gelbvieh genetics with carcass merit and strong maternal traits has allowed Burton to sustain profitability in both the feedlot and his cowherd.

Congratulations to Dallas Burton on being named the 2023 AGA Commercial Producer of the Year!F

“Dallas has put an extra emphasis on carcass traits and has seen a direct improvement in the way his cattle perform on the rail. In 2022, his cattle went 97% USDA Prime or Choice and virtually all yield grades 1-3. He monitors

JUNIOR CONNECTION

GELBVIEH BREEDERS TRAVEL TO THE CITY FOR CONVENTION By Gentry Warner, AGJA Vice President

I

had the opportunity to attend the 53rd Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. My time at convention flew by, I guess the old saying “Time flies when you are having fun,” remains true. Although, I had fun, I still learned a lot. From committee meetings, a tour at Merck Animal Health, Cattleman’s Profit Roundup, educational workshops, to the awards banquet that showcased our breed and breeders.

Howard, Meyer Natural Foods director of operations, Michaela Clowser, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association director of producer education, and Dr. Matt Spangler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor, during Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup. Breeders were very interactive and engaged in this educational session. We had a good discussion about the beef carcass, the marbling of our breed and how we can continue to get better as a whole.

Personally, I was unable to attend events that took place on Wednesday at convention because of a college exam. Going into convention I knew my time would be cut short. However, I did not let that stop me from learning from Dr. Scott

When members were not in meetings or sessions, we gathered and networked with other breeders. Personally, I enjoyed this the most because I was able to make connections with fellow members, board candidates and breeders. I believe that this is a people business, and the cattle are the by-product. So, it is extremely important to invest in the Gelbvieh breeders For all your AI needs: and members to continue to grow the breed. The people are what makes this breed so special, in my opinion.

We ended the convention with the annual meeting where we went over committee minutes from past meetings, discussed some new business, and heard

from American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) board of director candidates. The candidates all shared their personal stories with the breed and their vision of Gelbvieh in the future. On behalf of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) board of directors, Jaycie Forbes presented her letter as the president. After delivering a recap of the past AGJA Junior Classic, industry events and fundraisers; she invited myself, Lily Judd, and Jaylea Pope, to the podium where we recognized and thanked Jake Renner, past AGA member and youth activities coordinator, for all his dedications and hard work these past five years. Convention went very well, there was great discussion and involvement from the breeders to continue to grow and benefit the Gelbvieh breed. Breeders are continuing to look to the future and analyze how we can get better. To end this recap, I will borrow these words from the 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductee, Mark Goes, “The Gelbvieh cow will never fail you, so don’t fail the Gelbvieh cow.”F

meeting modern industry demands For decades United States consumers have continually recognized the value of superior beef products. Such recognition has driven the growing demand of a superior beef eating experience on a national and global scale. The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) commitment to the consumer and meeting modern industry demands has led to the launch of the Carcass Data Collection Project. The Carcass Data Collection Project is designed for AGA members and their customers. This project is a breed improvement directive, providing vital genetic information to re-charge the carcass database and enhance the predictability of current selection tools. AGA will pay genotyping costs of participating calves, genomic analysis will be completed by Neogen GeneSeek. Recognizing the increased expectations of commercial cattlemen, the AGA is dedicated to delivering the industry with the genetics that are smart, reliable and profitable from the ranch to the rail.

REWARDS and benefits • Larger carcass record database • More powerful genetic improvement tools • Increase predicting power of the genomic panels • Enhanced economic indexes • Improved carcass EPD accuracies

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS

2024 HERD ASSESSMENTS By Megan Underwood, M.S.

A

s we welcome in a new year, we must prepare to enter all the new data this year will bring. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) practices Total Herd Reporting (THR) on all females in the AGA Online Registry. From birth recordings to weaning weights to the transfer of animals, it is crucial for AGA members to keep their herd inventory accurate. Updating herd inventories starts each year on January 1, with new herd assessments for all females 13 months of age or older. The annual $30 per head fee is a flat rate for all data records. Herd assessments are now open until the deadline of March 15, 2024.

ACCESSING YOUR HERD ASSESSMENTS: You will want to log into your AGA Online Registry account then locate and select “Herd Mgmt” on the left-hand side of your screen. From the drop-down menu provided select “Inventory”. Once in the inventory, you will have access to all the females currently listed as “active” under your ownership, along with any

females including placing the assessment, others that may be associated with your account if you are listed as the Cooperator disposing cull cows, and recording exposure data to sires for the 2023 calf ID for another herd. crop. If there are boxes under the “Heifer Exposed?” tab, simply clarify whether that female will be registering a calf in 2024 that was conceived AI (Artificial Insemination), PE (Pasture Exposed), or NO (Not Exposed). If the female was not exposed to a bull but will remain in the herd, be sure to select the “NO” box. You’ll notice once the AI and/or PE boxes are checked the female will receive a 2024 button to the left of her details for selection to place the 2024 herd assessment. You can select both AI and PE if the female was exposed to sires using both methods.

If your females are pasture exposed, you will select the PE button and enter the sire’s registration number along with the date the sire was put in the with your females and the date he was removed. Be sure to select the green check mark to the right of the exposure details after entering. If you accidentally select PE and need to return to the main screen to dispose, or select AI simply click the red “X” button to the right.

TO RECORD FEMALE EXPOSURE DATA:

If your females were AI’d, you’ll want to select the AI button to the right of the females’ details and enters the sire’s registration number along with the date your females were AI’d.

Recording exposure data on your females while you complete your herd assessments simplifies your calf registration process later. Entering which sire a female was exposed to eliminates the need to enter the sire’s registration
