GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD
Gaining Traction in the Commercial Cattle Complex By John Carrel
T
hank you, Mother Nature. I am sure that many Gelbvieh breeders were somewhat apprehensive to come to Billings, Montana, in December. The North Dakotans and Canadians may have thought they were on summer vacation, but I would assume most folks were in the former category. Lucky for us, we scheduled convention in between two storms and pulled it off. I wasn’t really too worried because if there is anything cattle producers are it is resilient. I was happy to see how upbeat the overall convention was. Staff really needs to be commended for the fantastic job they did putting together the whole convention. I would also like to thank the tour stops, as I felt they went out of their way to share their operations and good old Montana hospitality.
In the Gelbvieh breed we are lucky enough to have breeders from all production aspects represented throughout the membership and board. These individuals have a wealth of knowledge in their respective areas of expertise. I had some great conversations with many of these members at convention and came away energized and much more knowledgeable about their segment of the industry. One common takeaway was that we must all pull together to continue around the curve for the sake of the breed. Many of these breeders are on the board and to have them thinking for the sake of the breed and infusing their expertise is fantastic. Not every breed is lucky enough to have this.
I
really feel the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed is regaining traction in the commercial cattle complex, which is the ultimate driving force behind all segments of our breed. It is reassuring to see this.
I really feel the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed is regaining traction in the commercial cattle complex, which is the ultimate driving force behind all segments of our breed. It is reassuring to see this. Here again, the staff and ultimately the breeders themselves deserve a pat on the back for their efforts in this regard. Finally, the stigma of the hard to finish Gelbvieh is starting to dwindle. However, we cannot take our eye off of the ball and must continue our efforts. The stigma is still lurking and one pen of cattle at any one feeder only sets us back once again. The old saying about a customer telling one person regarding a good experience and telling 10 people about a bad experience is evident here for sure. Not to mention, feeders are concentrated within certain areas of the country and often exchange information, whether intentionally or not, so word travels fast. We have spent too much time, effort, and resources proving to commercial producers and feedlots that we have the right kind of cattle. It is sure easier to convince them when you can back up your convictions with

cattle that feed efficiently and hang up a good carcass on the steer side and make awesome momma cows on the female side. I heard it said at convention that we are turning the curve in this respect, but are not all the way around yet, so let’s not weaken now.
Unfortunately, most of us have obligations at home and this prevents us from doing all of the herd visits we would like to. Meeting breeders at the convention just reminds me of all the really good cattle, both registered and commercial, stashed away throughout the country. Many of these breeders are so dedicated to what they do it is amazing. For many, cattle are their sole source of income. As we know, the last year has been a challenge. I admire all that fight the elements and outside forces, many beyond their control, to follow their passion while making their payments and producing the best beef in the world. We do tend to get mired in our own little world with the daily challenges, but as a whole, cattle producers have been able to keep their focus on the big picture. The industry forces us to be innovative and independent, but to me the convention gives us a few days to collect our thoughts, collaborate, and get refocused. Thank you for that. D

GW FROM THE CORNER OFFICE
We’re in the People Business By Megan Slater
L
ast month the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) hosted its 49th Annual National Convention in Billings, Montana. The convention saw a great turnout of both members and commercial customers coming from all over the country and Canada. As I reflect on this great event, I am reminded of something we may often forget, we may be in the cattle industry, but ultimately we are in the people business. Yes, our business is to buy, sell, and breed cattle, however none of that can happen without human interaction. The association and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed would not be where it is today without people coming together to make decisions and work together. Convention is one of those times when people with a passion for the Gelbvieh breed come together and do just that. Future-forming conversations are not only had in meetings where these items are formally discussed, but a lot of these conversations are also being had in the hallways and during the social events. During this year’s convention, the membership came together and discussed issues that will impact the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed well into the future. Insightful conversations were had during these meetings where members expressed different opinions, but ultimately came out of the meeting with a unified resolution to move forward. We have seen similar circumstances come out of previous conventions as well and each time it is inspiring to see members with different views come together and make discussions for the betterment of the breed.
As we head into 2020, we are quickly approaching the AGA’s 50th anniversary. I believe that we have the right people in place to continue moving Gelbvieh in a positive direction and ready for another 50 years. The AGA board of directors is committed to keeping Gelbvieh cattle relevant in a modern beef industry and focused on the needs of the commercial producer. The AGA staff is motivated, energetic, and ready to carry
8 | JANUARY 2020
out initiatives to keep Gelbvieh at the forefront of a changing industry. Not only does it take good quality cattle that possess traits necessary for profit on commercial operations to keep Gelbvieh going, but it also takes the people of the AGA offering programs and services to help those producers take their operations to the next level. In the December 2019 issue of Gelbvieh World, John Carrel, AGA’s president in 2019, wrote about the importance of visiting your commercial customer and making sure you are providing them with the service they need. In addition, Ryan Ludvigson, Ludvigson Stock Farms, Billings, Montana, spoke at the fifth annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup on the topic “What to Expect from Your Seedstock Supplier.” He explained that commercial producers should look for a seedstock supplier that truly understands their operation because if they don’t know, they can’t begin to help them pick the best genetics to fit their operation. Good customer service could be the difference between someone buying a Gelbvieh or Balancer bull rather than going down the road to the producer selling another breed. A full recap of this year’s Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup will be presented in The Profit Picture in February. It was encouraging to see the turnout of this year’s convention both of those who make it every year and those who made it out for their first convention. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 50th Annual AGA National Convention, which will be the kick-off to the AGA’s 50th year, December 2-4, 2020, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. D

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION
Reaching New Heights in Billings By Rebecca Mettler
A
merican Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members and Gelbvieh and Balancer® stakeholders gathered in Billings, Montana, for the 49th Annual AGA National Convention, themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Reaching New Heights.” The convention, sponsored by SweetPro Premium Feed Supplements and Neogen, was well attended with attendees from all across the U.S. and two Canadian provinces. Attendance at important events such as convention strengthens the association through participation in planning sessions and committee meetings, voting for association leadership positions, and taking advantage of opportunities to broaden one’s knowledge of the beef industry. The week began with an AGA Board of Directors meeting. Next on the schedule was the opening general session, which included Marty Ropp, Allied Genetic Resources as keynote speaker (see page 2021). Megan Slater, AGA executive director, gave the state of the association and John Carrel, 2019 AGA president gave an address. The afternoon was filled with committee meetings and wrapped up with a kick-off reception complete with live entertainment! On Thursday morning convention attendees hopped on a shuttle bus and toured three of the most well recognized beef cattle-related companies in the Billings area: ORIgen, World West Sire Service, and Midland Bull Test. Each stop on the tour provided the AGA with an inside look into the operation, which spurred great discussion and learning opportunities (see page 22-23).
10 | JANUARY 2020
Thursday afternoon featured the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup at the convention site, which was chocked full of great information from industry-leading speakers including Tanner Aherin, CattleFax, Ryan Ludvigson, Ludvigson Stock Farm, and Bob Cook, Public Auction Yards. The evening concluded with the Bull Pen Session at 406 Kitchen and Taproom. The final day of convention started with the breed improvement committee meeting as well as an estate planning session sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Foundation, and an AGA Online Registry Service training session. The day also included the election of the 2020 board of directors at the AGA Annual Meeting. The convention wrapped up with an awards banquet sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Rodger and Lindy Schroeder, Chugwater, Wyoming, were awarded the commercial producer of the year, Skyler and Annette Martin, Blackhawk Cattle Company, Oregon, Illinois, received the breeder of the year award, and outgoing board members Doug Hughes, Max Meadows, Virginia, and Walter Teeter, Mount Ulla, North Carolina, were recognized. The AGA also honored Jim Thomas, Oklahoma, as the newest inductee into the AGA Hall of Fame. The AGA would like to thank all the members and industry partners who attended the 49th Annual AGA National Convention and made it a successful week in Billings! D

Rodger and Lindy were present at the AGA awards banquet to accept the award. Jeff Swanson, an AGA board member from Oxford, Nebraska, presented the couple with the award.
The Schroeders bought their first Gelbvieh bull out of the pens in The Yards at the National Western Stock Show in 1981. Rodger said they “like the Gelbvieh for their milk, their meat, their disposition, and their structure.” Starting out with an almost purebred Gelbvieh herd, Rodger and Lindy found that Balancer cattle were the best fit for their program.
The AGA Commercial Producer of the Year Award honors individuals who use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in progressive commercial cattle operations and are proactive in their promotion of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. Rodger and Lindy have a family history that is rich with Western culture. The ranch was started in 1881

The Schroeder family has put together a great program in southeastern Wyoming. They have invested a lot of hard work into creating a place that sets a great example for others living the ranching lifestyle. With the deep family heritage and the strong passion for ranching, their ranch will surely carry on well into the future. D

Blackhawk Cattle Company Receives Breeder of the Year Award
S
kyler and Annette Martin of Blackhawk Cattle Company, Oregon, Illinois, were honored as the American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Breeder of the Year for 2019 during the awards banquet held at the 49th Annual AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana. Skyler and Annette were present at the AGA awards banquet to accept the award. Stuart Jarvis, Bar Arrow Cattle Co., Phillipsburg, Kansas, presented the Martin couple with the award.
Blackhawk Cattle Company has been a member of the AGA since 1985. Currently, the operation consists of 130 registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows and extensively utilizes artificial insemination and embryo transfer. With a focus on quality seedstock and an eye toward the commercial beef industry and the feedyard sector, Blackhawk Cattle Company understands the profit drivers throughout the beef supply chain. Skyler’s goals for the seedstock operation have always centered on performance and quality from conception to
consumption. In fact, Blackhawk Cattle Company has a bid/buy back program to purchase local bull customers’ feeder calves. The family’s connectivity to the beef industry stretches beyond the seedstock sector. The Martins are also involved in Nordman Feedlots, which is a family business from Annette’s side of the family. The Martins, their seven children included, have also seen success at major shows across the country. Showing was their way to get the next generation further involved in the Gelbvieh business. Skyler is a former AGA Board of Directors member and is currently active on the American Gelbvieh Foundation Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail contest committee. He is also a past board member of the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa organization. D

his cattle at nearly every state fair in the Central US. Black Feature, purchased from Valhalla Ranch, won Jim champion ribbons at nearly every fair he was exhibited. Today many qualities of the breed can be traced back to Black Feature and O Lazy Y breeding.
Jim was present at the awards ceremony to accept the award along with his daughter Hiedi LaBrue, and Virginia Potter. Vernon and Eileen Davidson, Pontiex, Saskatchewan, Canada, presented the award.
Jim has been very active within the association and remains so today, attending a Gelbvieh event whenever he can. He has held many committee leadership positions and has attended AGA conventions, American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) events and the NWSS. He has also taken a leading role as historian for the American Gelbvieh Foundation’s Gelbvieh History Book.
The AGA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for their lasting contribution to the growth and development of the Gelbvieh breed. Hall of fame inductee selection criterion includes contributions to breed promotion efforts, leadership provided to the association, and the breeding of superior genetics that are of great influence within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle population. Jim was one of the first Gelbvieh breeders to display and exhibit Gelbvieh cattle at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in the ‘70s. Later, he went on to show
His undying commitment to the Gelbvieh breed makes Jim Thomas a notable figure in the breed’s history. A lifetime of preserving, improving and promoting the breed, all while encouraging fellow breeders to do the same, speaks to Jim’s infallible dedication and integrity. The endeavors and contributions have not only impacted the breed, but also the AGA and the AGJA. D

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION
Plan to Be Successful By Rebecca Mettler
M
arty Ropp, executive officer of Allied Genetic Resources, provided the keynote address during the Opening General Session at the 49th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention, on December 4, 2019, in Billings, Montana.
in the pig business, seedstock or otherwise, lose their business, and some of them lost a lot more.” These life lessons have shaped the way he views the beef industry. From that point, he outlined several truths that will ultimately impact the future of the beef industry. “I will argue that we have never been focused enough on planned genetic improvements in the beef business, ever. I’ve been involved with the beef genetics business now for more than 20 years, and I’m taking some responsibility for that, too.” Ropp explains that in the future, beef seedstock suppliers are looking at increased accountability for the genetics they provide as the industry moves into the next decade. “As a genetics provider, you have to be thinking 5, 10, 15 years in the future every time you do something. In fact, this is one of the core values of our company. If the decision doesn’t have a potentially positive impact for 10 or 20 years from now, we don’t make that decision; we do something else.”
Ropp founded Allied Genetic Resources (AGR) in 2010. He describes the company as a beef resource and service business that focuses on ways to help their clients recruit and keep customers. Currently, AGR serves 90 commercially focused, independent seedstock producer owners that produce genetics across multiple breeds. Although Ropp focuses on providing services to the beef seedstock industry today, he comes from a little different agricultural background. Ropp grew up in Normal, Illinois, as a purebred Chester White pig breeder. “I think that my upbringing and what we did puts me in a unique position. I’ve been a member of a breed association since I was eight years old.” Ropp is one of the few people that have sat on both the Beef Improvement Federation board and the National Swine Improvement Federation board, which provides a lot of life experiences and knowledge. “I witnessed nearly every single person that I knew
20 | JANUARY 2020
The bulls seedstock breeders sell in 2021 are already made; the breeding decisions for that set of bulls is done. A seedstock supplier’s 10-year-old cows in 2030 are already genetically made. So, any changes made to an operation have a lasting impact, according to Ropp. “As individuals and as groups, we have to have a plan,” Ropp said. “We can’t afford to react because every reaction we have has 10-year, 15-year implications.“ Ropp believes that a large part of the future success within the beef industry lies with genetic improvement. So, in the name of genetic improvement, Ropp made the following statements: 1. “If we discourage crossbreeding, then we aren’t supporting genetic improvement. We’re not supporting customer success if we discourage crossbreeding because we’re taking $100 or $200 out of our customer’s pocket every time we tell them not to do it.” 2. “If we discourage the use of proven science and technology, and instead try to replace it with dogma
and testimony, then we’re not that serious about genetic improvement.” 3. “Marketing below-average genetics… really?” Ropp grew up in corn and soybean country, and if he got up in front of a group of farmers and asked them if they used average seed, they’d think he had lost his mind. “We have to find a way to focus more on the things we can control because focusing on the rest of it just makes you live less. It makes you live a shorter period of time and have less fun.”
Turning Challenges into Opportunities “I think too often we confuse challenge with change. Things are going to change. The people in this world that are truly successful assumed things were going to change. ” For example, producers can expect input costs to remain a thorn in their sides for the foreseeable future. Ropp said that the key is to start making decisions based on reducing costs and not just based on output. Yes, of course, the beef industry must emphasize output, but output must be achieved more cheaply.
Technology in the beef industry is evolving at a faster and faster rate all the time. New technology creates opportunities for improvement in many aspects of the beef industry. Be an early adopter of technology. “We are going to become a more competitive food business and beef industry, even if we’re drug kicking and screaming. And from the genetics standpoint, since you’ve got to make 10-year decisions, you can’t afford to be drug kicking and screaming. You’ve got to lead the charge so that you’re ready when it’s time to benefit from the change.” Ropp commended the AGA for its willingness to think in new ways and do new things in the past. He also urged AGA members to continue to continue thinking outside of the box. The bottom line, change is inevitable. Instead of being reactive to change, seedstock producers must be future-focused and keen to adopt technological advancements for the production of improved genetics that the industry needs throughout the supply chain. INDUSTRY TOURS
The ORIgen tour provided a glimpse into each step in the semen collection process. They also had some very well recognized sires on display at their facility.
ADVENTURES IN MONTANA’S CATTLE COUNTRY Photos by Malerie Strahm and Rebecca Mettler What happens when you get a group of cattle producers together in a place where some have never traveled? You go evaluate cattle and learn more about the beef business, of course! One of the more exciting events of the 49th Annual AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana, was the industry tour. Attendees spent an entire morning and a good part of the afternoon traveling to ORIgen, near Huntley, Montana, World West Sire Services, Joliet, Montana, and Midland Bull Test, Columbus, Montana. Thank you to our outstanding hosts at each stop of this Montana adventure! The AGA appreciates the hospitality and knowledge received.
22 | JANUARY 2020
The team at World West Sire Services was gracious enough to allow members of the Montana Gelbvieh Association to display cattle at their facilities for the tour.
The volume of information provided at Midland Bull Test was astounding! Their long-standing focus on performance testing and data collection is what makes them one of the best at what they do.

AGA Carcass Data Collection Project Announced
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the Carcass Data Collection Project as its latest breed improvement endeavor. The Carcass Data Collection Project is a joint effort of the AGA and American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) and is designed for AGA members and their customers. The focus of this project is to provide vital genetic information to re-charge the carcass database and enhance the predictability of current selection tools. For decades United States consumers have continually recognized the value of superior beef products. Such recognition has driven the growing demand of a superior beef eating experience on a national and global scale. U.S. cattle producers and industry affiliates have responded to demand by placing an emphasis on improving carcass merit and rewarding high quality carcasses with price premiums. The AGA is committed to providing its membership with powerful and reliable tools for genetic improvement. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) related to carcass traits tend to have lower accuracies due to lack of carcass data submitted on Gelbvieh and Balancer-sired progeny. Lower EPD accuracy limits the rate of genetic progress for carcass traits. Even though carcass traits are highly heritable, the prediction power of carcass EPDs is currently limited by these lower accuracy values. Lack of carcass records also limits the power of genomic marker effects. Genomics and ultrasound records can help improve the accuracy of carcass EPDs, but even combined cannot provide high accuracy carcass EPDs without actual carcass data on progeny. The increasing significance and subsequent recognition of carcass value amongst beef industry segments has led to the AGA and AGF’s investment in launching the Carcass Data Collection Project. The Carcass Data Collection Project is designed to deliver AGA members and their customers the opportunity to submit carcass data on Gelbvieh and Balancer®influenced genetics and provides an avenue for harvest data on terminal cattle to be paired with genotypes and incorporated into the genetic evaluation. Such phenotypic and genotypic data will provide Gelbvieh
30 | JANUARY 2020
breeders with tools to make their management decisions more efficient and accurate. Ultimately, the Carcass Data Collection Project aims to increase the carcass record database and enhance the predicting power of genomic panels. Program eligibility is structured to ensure highquality data is collected throughout the project. Eligible cattle must be sired by a bull registered with the AGA and have a minimum breed composition of 25% Gelbvieh and dams must be identifiable for age and breed composition. All calves must be tagged with an EID, have a DNA tissue sample collected, and must conform to contemporary grouping guidelines. Participants will also need to have access to harvest data records. Under the Carcass Data Collection Project, the AGA, with the support of Neogen, will cover the cost of genotyping all eligible cattle in the project. Genotypes are used to improve the genomic panels’ ability to predict carcass traits as well as sire-verify the participating cattle in the project. Sire-verification is a very valuable yet underutilized tool for commercial cattle prodcuers to rank bulls used in multi-sire pastures. Participants in this project will be able to capitalize on these and more benefits of genomic technologies without incurring the cost. As the modern beef industry continues to evolve, so do the expectations of commercial cattle producers; the AGA is dedicated to delivering the industry with the genetics that are smart, reliable, and profitable from the ranch to the rail. For more information on participating in the Carcass Data Collection Project visit Gelbvieh.org or contact Will Fiske, AGA breed growth specialist, at 303-465-2333 or will@gelbvieh.org D

What You Need to Know for 2020 Herd Assessments By Taylor Buckley
A
new year means a fresh start to a new years’ worth of records. Along with health and sale records, it is essential to keep up with which females are active in your herd. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) refers to this recordkeeping as the annual herd assessment. The $25 per head annual herd assessment fee applies to females over 13 months of age and is the foundation of AGA’s total herd reporting. Herd assessments are now open until the deadline of March 16, 2020, in the AGA Image 2 Online Registry Service. With spring bull sales and the National Western Stock Show happening around the same time, we want to keep the herd assessment process as easy as possible. The AGA staff is always available to answer any questions as you add this to your list of to-do’s.
Accessing the Herd Assessment: First, log into your account and find the red “Herd Management” tab. This will give you the option to click the green “Inventory”. Once in Inventory you will have

access to all of the females for the herd assessment process. (Image 1) Under “Inventory” find “Assessment-Age” in the white tabs that run across the top of the screen. Under this tab is a list of all females that are of breeding age, or that would be expected to calve in the upcoming year. For any young heifers that may not be 13 months of age as of January 1st, but are expected to have a calf in the upcoming year, look under “Optional Females”. (Image 2)
Completing Herd Assessments and Culling Cows: As you view the list of assessment-age females, you now have the ability to cull cows that are no longer active in your herd and record any exposure data that you may not have yet recorded. To dispose of a cow, click on the grey trash can to the right of her birthdate. Use the dropdown menu to select the specific reason code to describe why she is no longer in the herd. Next, click the green checkmark to lock that selection in. Remember, annual herd assessments should not be used as a tool to skip a year of calving for a cow. Rather, it is a tool to permanently dispose of a cow from the herd. With total herd reporting, we seek all information: good, bad, or indifferent. To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. If you do try to skip a year of calving information for a cow, you will have to pay for all of the years that she has been “disposed of ” to record future progeny. After making all necessary culls and disposals you can select each cow individually by clicking the “2020” button in the “Assess for” column, or complete all cows at one time by clicking “Complete yearly HAS

to receive it, complete it, and get it back into the office before the March 16, 2020 deadline. D
(Image 3)
Image 3 After completing your assessment, you can pay your balance online by following the pop-up box that takes you to a checkout screen. You do have 30 days to pay any balance incurred on your account, so it is not mandatory that the entire balance be paid at the time of assessment. The association does require exposure data to be recorded on all first-calf heifers (and first-calf heifers only). There is a box next to all heifers expected to have their first calf in 2020. If the heifer was exposed to a bull or AIed , simply check the box “Yes” or “No”. (Image 4)
Image 4 As always, if you ever run into problems or questions, call the office and we would be happy to help you. Also, if you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please request that in plenty of time GELBVIEH WORLD |

GW DATA BULLETIN
Birth Weight Recording By Tonya Amen, Ph.D., AGA Breed Improvement Consultant
B
ecause all sources of information are included, Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the gold standard for selection tools for a given trait. EPD calculations use pedigree information, performance data, and genomic results, with all of these sources boiled down for you into one value, reported in units of the trait. When available, EPDs should be your selection tool of choice for the traits of importance to you and your customers. Though we spend a lot of time talking about genomics and the value that genomic tests offer in terms of improved accuracy on EPDs early in the life of Gelbvieh and Balancer® seedstock, genomics do not completely
describe the variation in the traits of interest. I often hear breeders suggest that genomic results are more valuable than performance data, some going so far as to suggest that perhaps it is no longer necessary to collect weights and measures (e.g., weaning weights, scan data, carcass measures). Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, phenotypic measures may be more valuable than ever. Not only does performance data continue to be an important part in EPD calculation, but with the move to single-step incorporation of genomics using BOLT software, your performance data is necessary to ensure the accuracy of genomic marker effects used in EPDs. If not already in the midst of it, many of you will be headed into calving season soon, so this article will focus on the value of submitting accurate birth weights. Of course, the economically relevant trait is actually calving ease (and I also encourage you to submit calving scores). However, birth weights are used as an indicator of calving ease in the computation of calving ease direct (CED) and

DATA BULLETIN GW calving ease maternal (CEM) EPDs as well as a correlated traits for weaning weight and yearling weight EPDs, so they do have value. Over the years, you’ve been advised that scale weights were required. However, research has suggested that perhaps hoof tape measurements are a good alternative to scale weights and are certainly superior to “eye-balling” or making up a weight if you missed one. However, we do ask that you indicate if your weights being submitted are scale weights or hoof tape measurements. Recently, the science team at International Genetic Solutions (IGS) took a closer look at the scale vs. hoof tape measurement issue (Adkins, 2019). Approximately 7,000 hoof-tape records and 15,000 scale weights were analyzed, and it was found that, as expected they had a high genetic correlation (0.92). As has been previously reported, there was less variation in the hoof-tape measures (meaning fewer outliers with extremely heavy or extremely light birth weights). See Figure 1, used complements of IGS.
or Hoof Tape measurements are acceptable for use in EPDs. Also, it is far better to leave a blank weight than to guess on the animals if you are unable to obtain an actual measurement. As always, proper contemporary group designation is also important for accuracy of EPDs. This means animals of the same age, gender, raised in the same environment with equal opportunities to express their genetics are grouped together. D Figure 1. In the AGA Online Registry Service, you’ll now see the option to indicate the method for obtaining your birth weights in a pull-down menu in your birth queue. Scale

GW JUNIOR CONNECTION
The Nutrition and Reproduction Connection By Madalynn Welsh
“S
he’s open.” Ugh. We all hate that outcome when it comes to preg checking cows. Lucky for us, we don’t have to deal with the four-letter word as much due to the Gelbvieh breed’s positive fertility traits. But, there are still important management practices that influence pregnancy rates. Let’s talk about one of the most important factors in getting your cows bred this year: nutrition. In order to improve your herd reproduction management system, it is important to first understand how nutrition directly affects reproduction. In order to maximize economic growth, an operation should target a postpartum breed back window of 85 days. If the window is any longer, cows will be having less than one calf per year, which will damage a producer’s bottom line. Research by Cliff Lamb, Ph.D., Texas A&M University, demonstrates the importance of cowherd nutrition. While at the North Florida Research Center, Lamb’s research indicated that to hit the 85-day breed back goal, a cow’s body condition score must be at or over 5.5. His studies found that in a group of cattle with a BCS of less than 4, only 35% were cycling after calving. However, of the cattle that had a BCS of 5.5 and over, 70% were cycling postpartum. Poor nutrition and body condition can make it extremely difficult to get cattle bred. Additionally, if an unhealthy cow does get bred, her calf stands an increased chance of poor
health due to various complications, including subpar quality colostrum. The first 24 hours of life are the most important in determining how healthy a calf will be throughout its life. This typically starts with colostrum. As we know, colostrum contains important natural antibodies and immunoglobulins. These determine how susceptible to diseases the animal will be throughout its life. If a cow’s nutritional needs aren’t met, she will be unable to produce a high-quality dose of these important substances. This can follow the calf into adulthood and contribute to lower weaning weights, lower average daily gain, and decreased feed efficiency. All of these cost the producer a significant amount of money, and can all be traced back to a mother cow that needs a nutritional fix. Now that we know and have discussed how nutrition is directly related to reproductive health, the next step is to analyze our own operations and find areas that could use improvement. The key to this is to utilize the body condition scoring system. The BCS system is simple, easy to use, and effective. Simply look at your herd and determine if your cattle have a BCS of 4 or greater. Pull cattle that have low body condition scores and feed them separately from the rest of herd. This can decrease competition and allow them to gain weight back faster. In order to move a cow up 1 BCS, the cow must gain about 80 pounds. Additionally, the easiest time to improve a cow’s BCS is between weaning and calving. Finally, realize that adjusting your operation and making improvements will not happen overnight. Each operation is different, so talk to your veterinarian, try new things, and look online for research that has already been done on this subject. It can be intimidating and frustrating, but it is definitely worth it in the end and will ultimately help you avoid that dreaded four letter statement. D

GW OUT IN THE FIELD
New Changes to the Expanded Member Services for the New Year By Tom Strahm
H
appy 2020 to each of you! I hope that the new year, and the beginning of a new decade, will be filled with blessings for you and yours. Back in November 2019, I attended the Range Beef Cow Symposium, which was held in Mitchell, Nebraska. This was one of numerous industry events that American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) staff attended as part of our marketing plan to reach commercial cow-calf producers. Overall, I was encouraged by the level of interest expressed by attendees
in learning more about the strengths and benefits offered by Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. I think that more commercial producers are acknowledging the consequences of a straightbred cowherd. Reproductive performance in many of these cowherds is being compromised. Calf survival rate, health, and performance are being adversely affected. One of the presentations during the two-day symposium was titled, “Benefits of Crossbreeding in Commercial Herds.” This experience was encouraging because it means there is opportunity and potential for Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to gain market share. If you’re selling functional cattle with genetic merit, backing them with a good reputation, and a great customer service program, there should be some opportunities for you to increase sales. I know it won’t be easy and it will take work and effort on everybody’s part. One of the challenges is determining how to allocate your time and resources. Well, unfortunately, there’s not an all-encompassing “most effective way to market.” In May 2017, AGA staff developed Expanded Member

OUT IN THE FIELD GW Services. Originally, this program was designed with two different levels of participation. The Accelerator and Amplifier levels were available to members for an additional annual enrollment fee. These services are intended to help participants improve their operations and expand their market share. The intention is to increase Gelbvieh and Balancer presence in the commercial marketplace. The third level, Actuator, was added in August 2018. The Expanded Members Services program provides the opportunity to utilize direct mailing to send information about a participating breeder’s program to strategically chosen addresses. These addresses are generated from the purchased list of addresses used for The Profit Picture, which is published and mailed two times a year. For 2020, we have reduced the enrollment fee on all three program levels and increased the number of addresses provided for two of the levels. • Accelerator • For breeders with 150 cows or more on annual assessment • Breeders with fewer cows can buy up
•
Decrease enrollment fee to $2,500 • Reduced from $3,600 • Provide up to 5,000 new addresses • Amplifier • For breeders with 75-149 cows on annual assessment • Breeders with fewer cows can buy up • Decrease enrollment fee to $1,000 • Reduced from $1,800 • Provide up to 1,000 new addresses • Increased from 500 • Actuator • For breeders with less than 75 cows on annual assessment • Decrease enrollment fee to $700 • Reduced from $900 • Provide up to 500 new addresses • Increased from 250 From the research that I’ve done on the internet, print media is still an effective part of an all-inclusive advertising campaign, even in this digital age. Some of the statistics that I read say up to 90% of direct mail gets opened, while only 20-30% of email gets opened. D

Fourth Annual Gelbvieh Foundation Carcass Contest Results Released
R
esults of the fourth annual American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Contest were announced during the 49th Annual American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention awards banquet on Friday, December 6, 2019. Producers from South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska, took home top honors with prize payouts totaling $2,500.
The AGF continues to help advance the Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ breed through its support of research and development. For this reason, the AGF launched the Steer Challenge and Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Carcass Contest in 2016. These two projects together provide the information and funds necessary to generate datasets to advance Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass merit. The AGF Steer Challenge is a competition amongst individual Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced steers in which the judging criteria focuses on carcass value and average daily gain in the feedyard. The Steer Challenge gives an opportunity for participants to donate a steer to the AGF. All proceeds from the donation go toward research and development within the breed. In its fourth year, four ranches participated at Darr Feedlot in Cozad, Nebraska. All steers were harvested and final values were calculated in May 2019 with a total of 35 individual carcass data records. Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, South Dakota, won big at this event, taking home three of the five prizes handed out. Eagle Pass Ranch had the champion Balancer steer in the average daily gain category with the winning steer gaining 4.46 pounds per day. This steer also posted $800.42 for increase in value (carcass value minus the starting value). They also had the champion Balancer steer in the carcass

Edisto Forage Bull Test Sale
NORTHEAST BREEDERS
October 12, 2019 Blackville, South Carolina Sale Average 46 Bulls (Six Breeds Represented) ............................................................. $2,378
T
he Edisto Forage Bull Test (EFBT) located at the Edisto Research & Education Center near Blackville, South Carolina, takes a unique approach to central gain testing bulls. EFBT was developed, built, and started in 1982 with the commercial cow-calf producer in mind. It is a 168days pasture-based test and utilizes the Southeast’s advantage in the cattle business, which is the ability to grow high quality, lush forages year-round. EFBT was designed to performance test bulls in an environment in which bull buyers expect their progeny to perform. The 36th Edisto Forage Bull Test Sale was held October 12, 2019. The sale featured six breeds and included five Gelbvieh/Balancer® consignments. The overall high selling bull was lot 16, WALV Impact 841E, a PB94 Gelbvieh sired by HYEK Black Impact 3960N. The bull was consigned by Brendy Hill Farm, Ninety Six, South Carolina, and sold for $5,500. D

VLK Young Gun C503 Homozygous Black Homozygous Polled Balancer Young Gun was the 2017 Reserve National Champion Balancer Bull in Denver, and he’s proving to be an equally impressive breeding bull. As more data becomes available, it indicates that he’s a below-average birthweight sire with above-average growth and acceptable carcass merit. His daughters will be his hallmark and are some of our most valued young cows.

EGL Game Changer D136 Homozygous Black Homozygous Polled Balancer EGL Game Changer will have a large and exciting sire group selling this year. At the recent American Gelbvieh Association Scale and Rail contest, Gamechanger proved to be the big winner, siring the high-gaining balancer steer, the high carcass value balancer steer, and the overall high profit sire group winner in the balancer division. This is the first time in contest history that a single sire has swept all three divisions of the contest. You are sure to be impressed with the Game Changers.
