Production Sale

Welcome to Larson’s Lost River Livestock 14th Annual Production Sale

Welcome to our 14th Annual Production Sale. We are honored that you will consider us as your seedstock supplier. Again, we appreciate all past, potential, and future buyers. As we continue to push on the flywheel of progress, it turns a little easier every year. Each sale season we see new and repeat commercial bull and heifer buyers. Our fellow seedstock producers are also taking note and sales in that arena continue to grow. I believe our success is in large part due to a relentless pursuit of the contemporary genetics the market demands. There are three words that describe our goals, and this year’s sale offering: consistency, quality, and longevity. This is perhaps the most consistent set of bulls we have ever produced. While there are certainly standouts in all three breeds, we strive for the last bull in the catalog to sire calves equally as profitable as the first. The group of bred heifers is also very uniform and will be a super set of cows. The quality of these cattle continues to improve. Gelbvieh cattle have come a long way since the mid 80’s, both in terms of performance on the rail and in eye appeal. Stop and see for yourself. Our bulls rank in the top 44% for calving ease, top 31% for marbling score and top 24% for post weaning growth (YW). Longevity is also especially important to us. We have a very youthful cowherd at this point, but that is only because we challenge our cowherd to be better and are ruthless in our culling decisions. This group of bulls is the leanest set we have produced. Since the early winter was so warm, they were fed on a large pasture and got a lot of exercise. Consequently, they will likely cover more cows and last longer in your pasture. Please join us on Saturday February 24, 2024 on the farm. We had the opportunity to move our sale date to a Saturday and we took it, so please note the sale is a week later than years past. We have an open house the preceding Saturday for those of you who can’t make it sale day and visitors are welcome at any time before the sale as well. We look forward to seeing you on the 24th. Dan and David Larson

Some background about the LRL bulls and our selection process If you study the data provided on the bulls in the sale book you can see our average bull can provide strength in several different stastical categories. And there are also bulls within the group that excel in specific areas such as calving ease or growth. However, we don’t rely solely on EPDs to make our selections; we try to use them as a tool in a broad approach to produce the best bulls we possibly can. Our selection process starts with our breeding strategy and how we determine to mate our cows with sound and functional bulls that compliment them on a phenotype basis as well as on an EPD basis. Then, once calves start hitting the ground, we can evaluate the actual bull calf. At birth, we start with an evaluation of their dams based on udder quality, feet, and disposition. We strive to eliminate as many problems as possible starting with our mama cows and anything we see as a problem is sent to our commercial herd where they can raise embryo transfer calves or feeders. Any bull calf born out of a cow we see as a problem is put on the cut list. Also, birth weight and calving ease is recorded and any bull calf with a large birth weight or a difficult birth is put on the cut list. Next, we closely watch these bulls over the summer as they develop so disposition and overall conformation can be evaluated. We are striving to produce bulls with sound and attractive conformation, depth of body, width, stoutness, and overall power. When we wean, underperforming calves, calves with poor dispositions and calves that don’t meet the eye test are cut, as are anything that has previously been put on the cut list. About a month after weaning, we again evaluate the bulls based on disposition, performance and confirmation and then make another cut. The final cut comes when our veterinarian performs breeding soundness exams prior to the sale and any bull that shows significant issues that will likely prevent him from settling cows during the breeding season is culled. So in conclusion, the bulls that make it to sale day represent the top 45% of all the bull calves born here in a given year and have jumped through many hoops to do so. Not to say we have eliminated all problems from our herd or this group of bulls, but we have done everything we can to provide you with a sound, functional, quiet and healthy set of bulls ready to breed your cows and produce easy calving and growthy offspring. If you have any questions about our management or selection process, please don’t hesitate to contact either David or Dan.

LRL 2024 Bull Development Strategies SPRING BORN BULLS

The warmer than average temperatures, including numerous stretches of wet weather, kept our bulls out of the main lots to keep them clean. They stayed out on pasture until January 5 when the pens froze up and were no longer at risk of turning into a mud pit. They stayed clean and healthy, but their intakes tended to vary based on grass intake and to a greater degree, the wild swings in temperature. As a consequence, our bulls didn’t gain quite as well as they have in previous years on test. However, we will present you with a hard, very physically fit group of bulls. While they are a touch greener, they still weighed on average 25 pounds heavier than last year’s bulls at the same time in mid-January. Those gains in performance over last year can be traced back to a number of different factors: • Excellent early calf health during the trying months of April and May. • Timely rains during a drier than normal summer helped us in 2 ways: o Enough grass to avoid needing to supplement cows or calves. o Drier grass with a high nutrient density led to good cow body condition scores and increased weaning weights. The most important factor in increased performance is using genetics from the top of the genepool, pushing our performance higher while not • sacrificing calving ease or maternal traits. This added to the performance of our calves which will in turn add pounds and value to our customers calves because at the end of the day, we are only as successful as the producers who use our genetics.

FALL BORN BULLS

Our fall born bulls have been developed more slowly than our spring bulls because their added age makes this development strategy very easy to implement. They are born on grass with no assistance, nurse the cow while eating TMR at her side and are supplemented with second crop dry hay during the coldest winter months, weaned in March and then are placed on a slow growth ration until summer grass is available. During the summer, they roam the pastures around the main farm getting plenty of exercise and staying lean. This last summer we opted to hand feed these bulls about 5 lbs of a corn/oats/DDGS mix to help interact with them on a daily basis, which has led to really good dispositions. This fall, starting in October, these bulls were slowly introduced to the spring bull ration and that’s what they’ve been on since. They have been culled through on 4 separate intervals for all of the necessary factors: performance, disposition, foot structure, confirmation and fleshing ability. We feel this is the highest quality group of long yearling bulls we have produced to date and as they will be 20-22 months old at the time of turnout this summer. They will be able to cover a greater number of cows, saving you significant bull resources that can be devoted elsewhere.

Page 3

LRL Bull’s Average EPD Percentile Rank There are two ways to rank bulls you intend to buy, within a herd and between herds. Within our herd, the ratios we print allow you to rank bulls on their own performance. Take weaning weight for example, a bull with a ratio of 105 means his own weaning weight was greater than the average in our herd. However, compared with EPD’s, the ratio doesn’t do a great job predicting how his calves will perform. This is where EPD’s come into play. Using the weaning weight example (WW), a bull with a WW EPD of 75 should produce calves that wean off 7 lb. heavier than the average bull within the breed, because the average WW EPD in the Gelbvieh breed is 68. As a result, when studying the EPD’s in this catalog, the fact many of our bulls rank above, or well above, breed average means they will produce more pounds and make you more money on your calf crop. To summarize the data, we will compare it to the last 2 years of percentile rankings. Compared to the last 2 crops of bulls, the bulls on this year’s sale moved closer to breed average for calving ease traits while significantly improving for growth traits and remaining steady to improving for carcass traits. Maternal traits remained steady while our milk production EPD’s continued moving towards breed average which we have made a concerted effort to achieve over the last few years. These bulls represent a detailed vision of producing cattle where we strive to minimize calving difficulties while pushing for increased performance in real world conditions. We also keep in mind many producers retain replacement females so strong maternal traits are a priority in our breeding philosophy with udder quality, foot structure and overall longevity being factors we place a great deal of emphasis on. Another important factor leading to cows staying in the herd for many years is keeping milk production of those females at reasonable levels. For us, too much milk can be just as big of a problem as too little because a cow that milks herself down to nothing in the first year or two of production and then comes open is a huge loss to a producer’s bottom line. These cattle need to be working for us, not the other way around and we are constantly trying to make them more suitable for our customers while increasing the return per acre for producers using our genetics.

Genomic Enhanced EPDs All cattle selling with Genomic Enhanced EPDs have the GGP logo located at the top right of each respective pedigree. DNA testing is a huge priority in our program to better help the buyer with selection process of the animals in the sale. It also helps us with our genetic progress and breeding selections for future animals offered in our annual production sale.

In addition to the pedigree, performance and progeny data utilized to breed the best and most prolific cattle we can, the Genomic Enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) add reliability and accuracy to an animals EPDs to offer another selection tool to the sale offering. The DNA testing verifies the genetic merit and predictability in all breeds of cattle. The true breeding value of animal is not 100% known, however with the advancement of GE EPDs, it does give us a strong indicator of what to expect from the genetic values of the cattle. The GE EPDs give us a fair evaluation and comparison of animals within the same breed to help breeders make a selection of animals that will fit best in a breeding program. Comparisons should be made Gelbvieh/Balancer to Gelbvieh/Balancer, Red Angus to Red Angus and Simmental to Simmental within this sale book.

Welcome to the 14th Annual Larson’s Lost River Livestock Annual Production Sale. 2023 was a year for the record books, selling bulls to many top seedstock producers and larger commercial producers throughout the U.S. The quality of LRL bulls is becoming one of the strongest in the Gelbvieh/Balancer breeds with some of the top genetics at the highest of quality. The 2024 sale offers a wide range of genetics that continues to produce quality at the highest level with more advanced data and predictability than previous sale offerings from Larson’s Lost River Livestock Production Sale. LRL continues to use top AI sires and an extensive embryo transfer program to produce a product at excels in all facets of the industry. As you study the bulls you will find these bulls represent calving ease, performance, high carcass values and eye appeal. I take the opportunity to get through the cow herd every year to see the dams and sisters to these bulls and females selling. The factories you find in the pastures here are truly amazing females with high volume, soundness and milk that converts to the calves. The selection criteria is as strenuous as any in the country. Only 45% of the bulls born at LRL make the sale. Take time to read the selection process on page 3. The strategic plan to produce better quality in each next year is working here with the hard work, culling and planned breeding as you will see in the sale offering. When you purchase a bull or female from LRL, you are getting the program with a high quality product. Past sale offerings are working for breeders nationwide with excellent success. These bulls and females are bred to acclimate and work in many weather climates with very little maintenance. We are proud of the success breeders are having with the LRL product. Seedstock and commercial producers are giving us reports throughout the year of the success they are having with Larson’s Lost River Livestock genetics. Feel free to call or text with for any updated information or an evaluation of any animals in the sale offering. Sincerely, Chris Mitchell MMS

JOB Danell Pay Pal 12H

Sire of lots 1-16

As always, we try to select one of our most impressive and balanced bulls to represent the title of being “Lot 1” and we feel Sundown L130 is that bull. From an early age, he displayed the power and stoutness Pay Pal progeny have become known for and he always knew he was a pretty cool dude. As he’s grown and matured, he’s maintained that same level of thickness and width while developing the other traits necessary to become a top end herdsire prospect. He’s very athletic on the move, easy to handle and is soft made for a high percentage purebred Gelbvieh bull. His dam is also a top producer for us, entering our donor pen this past spring and featuring an outstanding lifetime WW ratio of 108 on 6 calves. All of her sons have made our past sales and all of her daughters have been retained as replacements. And as she stems from the Nellie line of cows, you can rest assured she has the utmost level of maternal strength. When you add all of those traits together, you get this powerful stud and we can’t wait to share him with you. Page 6

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Spring Gelbvieh Bulls

Here’s a couple of bulls we are extremely excited about. Both of these bulls are full brothers to our second high selling bull last year, LRSF Voyageur K182 who sold for $22,000 to Lone Oak Cattle in IA. With that sort of value already being produced by this mating, don’t miss out on adding one or both bulls to your rotation for some added punch and eye appeal. And don’t forget about their tremendous donor cow, Rylee F71 ET. F71 has been as close to a no-miss cow as we’ve ever had and I think even if we bred her to a goat, we’d get a pretty good calf just because of her unmatched maternal potency. In her lifetime, she’s produced 6 bulls, all making our sale and most being sale features. Check out her natural twin bull calves as lots 30 & 31 and even as she had natural twin bull calves this past spring, we conventionally flushed her on June 9, she produced 7 grade 1 embryos and bred back AI on her first cycle after being flushed. Every sign with this cow points to greatness so don’t miss out on the opportunity to add her and Pay Pal to your herd.

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Spring Gelbvieh Bulls

Another set of full ET brothers sired by Pay Pal and out of another outstanding donor of ours, Melanie A20. We unfortunately lost the A20 cow this past spring to a heart infection so these 2 bulls will be her last to sell but man did she save some of her best for last. Both bulls are long bodied, clean fronted and have a really cool design which was what A20 did the best. She was the epitome of what a cow should be; elegant, perfect footed, sound uddered and maintained an outstanding track record of production. She has a very distinguished list of progeny including 7 bulls making our sale and 8 daughters being retained as replacements, 1 of which sold for $10,750 on the 2022 ND Golden Rule. These two sons of hers will make an outstanding set of female producing bulls while not sacrificing growth.

Silver Wings L177 is out of a really promising young cow who has hit it out of the park with her first 2 calves. L177 is a maternal brother to lot 27 in last year’s sale, a bull we retained to use back on our black heifers. You’ll see his service on several of the females selling and we’re very excited about what he brings to the table. L177 does a lot of the same things as his brother in terms of profile as you can see from his picture, he’s an absolute stunner of a bull. And then when you add in the power and muscle of Pay Pal, you really get a special sort of bull.

Here’s yet another Pay Pal son with the added frame, power and length of body needed to produce heavy, eye appealing calves that will put more dollars in your pocket when it comes to time to sell his progeny. Walk the Line L145 can do all of these things while not causing problems at calving which is what we’re really striving to do with our breeding program. This guy’s dam is a cow that really sorts herself towards the top of herd for maternal strength. She’s produced 2 excellent replacement females with her last 2 calves and is a daughter of one of our top donors, Arianna 77B. 75% Gelbvieh Bull BD: 3/9/2023

Mama Tried L156 is a full brother to our lead-off bred heifer, Rylee K224 and with a female like her backing up this bull, you can bet he’s going to produce some outstanding daughters while siring long, stretchy bull calves. And as a purebred Gelbvieh herdsire prospect, his versatility of use in making purebreds or Balancers will pay significant dividends especially when you factor in his added frame size and length of body combined with his outstanding numerical values of top 4% WW, 5% YW, 20% CW, 3% REA, 10% MARB and 2% FPI all while remaining at breed average for CED.

Pay Pal strikes again with a bigger framed, tremendously powerful bull that is absolutely going to put pounds on calves while remaining adequate for calving ease, which can be seen with his 14 for CED. Branded Man L68 really shines in terms of overall performance and like many of the other cattle in the sale is backed up by a really solid mama cow, Blackstar C28. C28 is a 2-time Dam of Merit award winner, maintains absolutely perfect feet and a nice tidy udder.

Guitar Town L84 is a very well-balanced Pay Pal son tracing back to our Melanie A20 donor, who is the donor dam to lots 6 & 7 in this sale. Refer back to those lots to read about many of A20’s accomplishments but one of her best daughters might just be the dam of this guy. The F208 female has been a really strong producer for us producing 2 bulls that both made the sale and 2 daughter who were both kept as replacements. One daughter is actually the mother of another bull in this sale lot 28. If you’re looking for top end maternal strength, make sure to give this guy a hard look.

It’s beginning to become a theme here early in the catalog, but with Highwayman L173 we have another stout Pay Pal son backed by an outstanding cow with a very strong production record. Her last 3 sons have all made the sale with the first selling to Dean Speck of Bemidji in 2022, the second going to Bryan Grove of Thief River Falls in 2023 (K132 photo adjacent) and the third being L173 in this sale. That sort of consistency is what we strive for and as you study the rest of the catalog, it hopefully becomes evident with other bulls and their respective dams.

As you can see from his picture, El Paso L108 is a very striking individual from the side profile but don’t think he’s a 1 trick pony, he’s equally as impressive when you get behind him and see the patented Pay Pal thickness and dimension. He’s very athletic on the move and as he stems from the line of Nellie cows, you can bank on maternal superiority of the cows on the bottom side of his pedigree. His dam is also an up-and-coming producer for us raising a bull who sold last year to Jason Morris of Little Falls, MN.

Wagon Wheel L75 is one of the few heterozygous polled bulls in the offering and it was such a bummer when that result came back. L75 is one of the top bulls in the pen when it comes to his physical traits; he possesses a very desirable blend of attractiveness from the side combined with tremendous power and dimension. He’s one of the most easily identifiable bulls in the pen and I often find myself studying him and appreciating him from a different angle each time he passes by. He’s definitely going to add pounds to calves while making them eye appealing and stout.

In our bull selection process, we try to use all of the tools in the toolbox; a bull’s actual performance, his overall conformation, his dam’s feet, udder and production ability and the strength of his EPDs as a whole. We feel this guy does maybe as good of a job as any we have and he has a ton of good to offer the Gelbvieh breed. Plato L174 really puts the pieces together from his BW ratio of 97, to his WW ratio of 113, to his young dam’s stellar production record and sound design, to the strength of his EPDs, he’s a bull that sorts himself towards the top of our group. If you take his EPDs against the rest of the Gelbvieh breed, he’s the only active purebred Gelbvieh bull in the entire database with his combination of CED, WW, YW, STAY, CW, REA, MARB and FPI. The only thing that matches the strength of his individual EPDs is his balance between them. Don’t miss out on adding this truly unique breeding piece to your operation.

Tiger L100 comes to you as a maternal brother to our all-time high selling bull, Dynamic J164 who sold back in 2022 for $38,000 to J&K Gelbvieh of IL and Coles Bend Cattle Co. of KY. The traits that made Dynamic valuable are some of the same that make Tiger L100 a very interesting breeding piece. Tiger features top 10% CED, 20% WW, 10% YW, 10% CW, 1% MARB and is one of the few purebred bulls who has an FPI value over 90, putting him beyond the top 1% of the purebred Gelbvieh genepool. And when you analyze his EPDs as a whole, he is 1 of 3 purebred Gelbvieh bulls born in 2023 who can match his combination of CED, MARB and FPI. He’s a bull that can really do it all and will have some friends come sale day.

Our lead-off High Life son, Genuine L59 is a special bull. The amount of middle this guy features is extremely difficult to compete with but don’t think of him only as a belly dragger. When you get behind him, he’s square off his hip, wide set and comes down on a wonderful set of feet and legs. He’s as calm as you can make one and was raised by an outstanding cow who has stood the test of time. She’s coming 11 years old and this guy marks her fourth son to make our sale. She remains absolutely perfect footed and for a cow of her age, her udder has maintained strength. Genuine L59 is our best High Life son to date and as a 5-star calving ease prospect with top 2% WW and top 10% YW, you can be assured he’s going to produce the kind of progeny that are easy to calve out, easy to make grow, easy to handle and easy to market. Another son of the powerhouse High Life bull, Miller L43 really shines when it comes to the maternal prowess of his cow family and his individual performance traits. His dam is a lovely first calver out of a terrific 8-year-old cow who is a 2-time Dam of Merit winner. That cow has been a solid producer for us landing 1 bull in the sale and 4 daughters in our replacement pen. When you combine that maternal strength with L43’s top 10% growth EPDs, you should end up with heavy calves across the board with excellent daughters.

More than ever, the market is currently rewarding high performance cattle that grow fast and hang a heavy carcass. If you’re looking for an option to add frame, power and high rate of gain to your calves, make sure you put Roadrunner L21 on your list. When we weighed bulls in mid-January, he was the heaviest spring bull in the pen by nearly 50 pounds and was within the top 5 bulls for ADG over the last 3 months. And he can back up his incredible performance on paper as well with an outrageous combination of top 35% CED, top 1% WW & YW and top 5% FPI, a feat matched only by 4 other Balancer bulls who will sell this spring. He’s a bull we think the world of and can’t wait to share him with you.

Sidewinder L101 marks the last calf out of a tremendous cow, Sarah B46. B46 was stifled right before calving last year but was still able to raise this tank of a bull over the summer. If she hadn’t gotten hurt, she’d most definitely still be in our herd because her recent production record had been outstanding, landing sons with Joel Stenseng of Clearbrook in 2021, Jerry Larson of Hines in 2023 and this stud with her last calf. Look for Sidewinder to be very useful on a set of heifers and produce eye appealing daughters with added maternal strength and longevity.

Zeus L25 is our lone Patriarch son this year and I really wish we had more bulls out of this breed leading sire. Patriarch has been the top selling bull for ABS in both 2022 and 2023 and it’s easy to see why. His high accuracy calving ease, muscular progeny, beautiful daughters and ability to sire cattle with outstanding foot quality are all extremely valuable traits. Zeus L25 fits that mold and as an added benefit, he’s homo black, homo polled and Top Dollar qualified. He’ll give you the 5 star calving ease, solid growth, excellent daughters and highly valuable feeders that will add profitability to any operation.

Just like the Frontrunner sons before him, Pit Boss L27 is incredibly attractive from the side profile while remaining square hipped and wide from the rear. He’s a bull that’s easy to find in the pen and most visitors ask what his breeding is. He gets out and moves with freedom and comes down on very sound feet and legs. His top 1% growth EPDs should lead to heavy calves in the fall and they’ll be a set you’ll enjoy looking at if they’re anything like their sire.

Even Money L114 comes to you as a full brother Nike K130, a bull who sold last year to the partnership of Little Windy Hill Farms and Cove Creek Cattle in VA. From reports from the new owners, Nike has made an excellent addition to their herds and looks to see heavy use. Even Money is built slightly differently than his brother; he’s longer bodied and slightly more athletic on the move but still has the same amount of power and performance. He’s also strong on paper with top 10% growth traits, top 15% MARB and top 4% FPI.

Frontrunner has been one of the most heavily used Gelbvieh bulls over the last few years and for good reason when he can produce bulls like Moneymaker L41. Although this bull is more moderate framed than some others in the pen, he packs a ton of density and stoutness into that structure. To go along with that width and power, L41 is one of the most stylish and attractive bulls in the offering. And when you factor in his EPD strength, you get a very unique individual who can add value to almost any operation. A top end calving ease prospect featuring top 15% MARB and stems from the outstanding Rylee cow family.

As I’ve mentioned with previous bulls, the maternal strength of the cows behind the bull is one of the most important traits they possess and this bull is no different. High Roller L149 is out of a beautiful first calver who did a fantastic job on her first try and she traces back to likely the best cow we purchased on the Schroeder Ranch dispersal back in 2015, X001. X001 was one of the best female producing cows on the farm during her tenure and her influence can be found in many of our pedigrees. Watch for this guy to continue that tradition of making excellent replacement females.

If cow families and numerical strength are of importance to you, make sure to put Freeroll L192 on your list of bulls to study. The Rylee cow family for us is synonymous with maternal superiority, outstanding phenotype and long-lasting cows. This guy’s dam has been a very high-quality addition to that line as her first calf sold on the 2023 ND Golden Rule as a bred heifer for $9,750 to Donovan Muechel of ND. And when you combine all of that value with L192’s EPD strength, you get a very special individual. Take a look at his unreal combination of top 2% STAY, top 2% MARB and top 10% FPI.

Shotgun L195 leads off our Playbook sire group and is a bull we’ve had our eye on all summer and fall. He puts a lot of the right pieces together from his power & mass to his excellent foot structure, to his high-powered dam, he’s a bull we certainly have some excitement about. As you study his sire Playbook 78H, he comes to you with an outcross pedigree, very strong EPDs for a high percentage purebred Gelbvieh herdsire, perfect feet and leg structure and is an absolute tank as a 4-year-old bull. Shotgun L195 displays many of the same traits as his sire and to top it off, he’s the 4th highest gaining bull this year on test and exhibits excellent scrotal development. We purchased Playbook in 2021 shortly before we purchased Pay Pal so with our excitement around Pay Pal, Playbook saw more limited use. But after losing Pay Pal, Playbook received a much larger role in our breeding program over the last 2 years and he’s really shined in that role. Take these 2 twin brothers; long bodied, correct in their design and maintaining tremendous numerical strength, the Playbook progeny represent an outcross purebred Gelbvieh option for most producers. And maybe most importantly with these 2 bulls, their dam is our performance powerhouse Rylee F71 donor. She’s the donor dam to lots 1 and 2 in this sale and was the dam of our lot 1 bull last year, Voyageur K182.

An absolute tank, Blitz L236 brings a ton of mass and density to the table in a compact package. If you’re looking to add some width and depth of body to a group of calves, give this guy a hard look. Don’t miss out on this guy’s strong carcass EPDs either as he ranks in the top 10% for CW, 10% for MARB and 25% for FPI all as a homo black, homo polled purebred Gelbvieh bull.

Guiness L116 comes to you as a full brother to our all-time high selling red bull, Chevelle J112. When a cow can produce a calf like Chevelle, you know she’s good; when she can produce 3 full siblings who all excel in terms of phenotypic excellence and genotypic strength, she’s elite. We first mated the B40 cow to Finnegan back in 2019 and she produced a very attractive, very productive daughter who has already raised a sale bull and one of our top replacements born in 2023. Then B40 raised Chevelle who sold for $14,500 in 2022. And now she brings you Guiness L116, another high-quality induvial in a long line of excellent progeny.

Just like a bull before him in this catalog, Shamrock L87 has a full brother who previously sold to another seedstock producer. His full brother sold last year to Chris Muegge of IN and just like the Guinness L116 bull earlier in the catalog, L87 is a Finnegan son backed by a productive cow who has a knack for landing sons in our sale. His dam is long bodied and attractive, very sound footed and sets down a perfect udder year after year. And when you add in the female producing ability of Finnegan, you end up with a bull who is going to sire some extremely valuable daughters.

Dublin L38 is a really interesting breeding piece. First off, his dam is an outstanding young Gunner daughter out of a beautiful cow we purchased on the Schroeder Ranch dispersal. The W960 cow was a picture-perfect mama cow with superb foot structure and a wonderfully constructed udder. She epitomized what a production cow should look like and the longevity she possessed is what we are striving for with our cowherd. Look for Dublin to supply those same robust maternal traits along with his tremendous blend of calving ease, growth and carcass strength.

Blarney L143 ET comes to you as a full brother to lot 91 in this sale and if you’re looking to make stunning females with unlimited maternal potential, put this guy on your list. If his mother and sisters are any indication, his daughters should make a tremendous group of replacement heifers with outstanding udders and perfect feet. The longevity of this line of Nellie cows is unmatched as well as his dam is safe to calve again this spring as an 11-year-old cow with her tenth natural calf maintaining a 370 day calving interval.

Malibu L171 marks our only Chevelle son in this year’s sale and after studying him, we’ll probably need to utilize Chevelle more aggressively in the future. Malibu is super long bodied and very correct when it comes to over design and structure. He gets out and moves with ease and was raised by a very productive cow who has landed sons with JSJ Livestock of Manitoba in 2021, Josh Vettleson of Trail in 2022 and Chad Cauwels of Magnolia MN in 2023. She’s produced 4 bulls, each sired by a different bull and all 4 have made our sale and been very well received. The common denominator seems to be the mama cow so don’t miss out on this maternally focused breeding piece.

These two full brothers come to you from an embryo package we purchased from one of the top maternally focused herds in the country, TJB Gelbvieh of GA. We purchased these eggs based on the incredible phenotype and production record of their donor dam, TJB Anissa 913U 149X. The 149X cow may be one of the most beautiful cows to ever grace the Gelbvieh breed and when we had the opportunity to add her influence to our herd, it was a no brainer to seize that chance. And by studying the bulls, you can see her influence in terms of their striking design and powerful muscle pattern. Don’t miss out on these 2 phenotypically dominate purebred red Gelbvieh bulls.

Springfield L148 is our only spring born Gunner son this year but just because he’s the only one doesn’t mean he lacks the quality of bulls coming from larger sire groups. Gunner is a bull we’ve had tremendous success with over the years and with as much as we’ve used him, we are getting limited in when we can utilize him. However, bulls like Springfield are what keep us going back to Gunner as a bull who can sire soft made, wide bodied cattle with the flexibility to last many years in the herd. Look for similar things with this guy.

As you’ll see later in the catalog, we are offering the dam to this bull as our featured bred female. With the 94D cow behind this bull, you can be all but guaranteed he’s going to be special. Fedex L124 ET is a bull we’ve been excited about all year. He so well made and is an absolute monster when it comes to maternal traits with top 1% STAY. Then when you factor in 94D’s influence, you get a bull who will sire some of the most outstanding females there are. Fedex L124 had an illness shortly after weaning which set him back but he’s done a tremendous job catching back up to the other bulls. He’s still slightly behind of where he should be however he has done his best catching up, ranking 7th for ADG. He has all the pieces to be a very valuable breeding piece.

Speedee L182 is our other son of the extremely popular Just N Time bull. Just N Time saw extensive use in his first breeding season throughout the Gelbvieh breed and the results look to be outstanding wherever he was utilized. Speedee L182’s physical traits are much the same as his siblings; he’s as long a train, thick butted and very correct in his structure. His dam is also a top-producer for us, raising a Gunner son who sold last year to Covington Gelbvieh of CO and saw use back in our program. Rest easy knowing you’re going to get powerful, high growth, eye-appealing calves out of this bull and beautiful long lasting daughters as described by his STAY EPD of 25, ranking well beyond the top 1% of the breed.

As our lead off Red Angus bull, Exxon L79 is a really interesting individual. With his sire, Rockefeller being deceased & his semen inventory gone, L79 represents an opportunity to take advantage of Rockefeller’s unique and desirable genetic package. Study his EPD values and you’ll find a combination of high index values, calving ease, growth, maternal traits and carcass merit that’s going to be very difficult to duplicate. Factor in his dam sired by the timeless Hard Drive and out of the breed leading donor Flo-Marie 245-369, you get a bull with the pedigree, numeric strength and overall design to make him a breed leader. Serious breeders take note.

Jalapeno L16 holds a special place in the heart of our niece Ava as he was the calf at side of her favorite cow this summer and as a pair, they were Ava’s top 4-H project. So if you’re looking for a bull you’ll never have to worry about a disposition issue with, make sure to put this guy on your list. On top of his excellent attitude, he also excels in overall design. Much like our other Relentless progeny, L16 is as angular and striking as we have. Our only Stockmarket son this year, Hedge Fund L28 embodies what Stockmarket progeny are known for; fleshing ability, body length, large testicular development and easy-going dispositions. These are all traits where L28 excels. He’s also very strong when it comes to other important traits such as calving ease coming to you as a 4-star calving ease prospect, growth ranking in the top 1% of the breed and carcass merit to qualify for the Top Dollar Angus program. He really puts the pieces together and will be a quality addition to any herd.

Quite possibly my favorite Red Angus bull this year, Purdy L207 is why the Quarterback line of cattle have been so popular. L207 is an absolute stud in the pen with no holes in his design. He’s stout made with a ton of softness, he’s strong topped and is likely one of the soundest bulls to walk around the pen. He really has it all. And when you study him on paper, he becomes even more impressive. 5-star calving ease traits, top 10% growth, top 4% MARB and a 107 WW ratio, he really rings the bell.

Duramax L91 is our only red SimAngus option this year and is a bull that’s going to have some friends on sale day. He’s out of a lovely cow who maintains excellent feet and a very youthful udder as an 7 year old cow and is sired by the popular Dually bull who adds significant strength to every trait across the board. Take a look at L91’s EPDs; every value is above breed average, save for MILK which is only slightly below breed average, a ranking where we feel comfortable. Top Dollar Angus qualified, 5 star calving ease and with extreme EPD strength and balance, like I said before, this guy is going to have some friends.

If you purchase a bull from us, we will provide you with credit equal to the value of one bag of Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access tags for each bull you purchase. To redeem your credit, bring your receipt for the tags to next year’s sale and we will apply it to your bull purchase. The FCCP provides age, source and genetic verifi cation for calves sired by registered Red Angus bulls. Cattle enrolled in the FCCP are accepted into the exclusive Choice+ and G.O. Red grids. The FCCP yellow tags’ are recognized by buyers nationwide and return a premium for Red Angus calves enrolled in the program. The Allied Access program provides age and source verifi cation for commercial cattlemen whose bull battery does not exclusively contain registered Red Angus bulls. Whether you are utilizing multiple sire breeds or halfblood bulls, enrolling in Allied Access demonstrates to buyers that you are taking an extra step in marketing your calves and adding value throughout the production chain. To enroll in the FCCP or Allied Access, contact the Red Angus marketing department. Enrollment is simple and free of charge.

Our lead off bull in the Simmental influenced division, Vortex L12 brings many high-quality traits to the table that both the cow/calf and feedlot sector are looking for. Homo black & homo polled, great overall design, outstanding individual performance backed by top 10% growth traits and Top Dollar qualified to help secure a premium for the top end feeder calves he’ll produce. Vortex is perfect on his feet and legs and comes from an excellent line of cows who are all good footed and nice uddered cows with great production records. Shaker L44 is a bull that catches my eye more and more every day and has really come on since weaning. After his adjusted weaning weight that was just shy of 700 lbs, he’s been an absolute monster when it comes to average daily gain, ranking as 3rd high gaining bull on test. And like I said, his terrific gains show when you study him in the pen; he’s larger framed, long bodied and is very correct in his overall design. He’s also very impressive from a numerical perspective when you factor in his 4-star calving ease rating coupled with top 25% growth traits, top 15% API and top 15% TI.

Concentrator L57 is a very well balanced, 5 star calving ease prospect who blends a ton of good into a moderate framed, eye appealing package. He’s very closed related to lot 54, as their mothers are full sisters and both bulls are sired by the ever popular TJ Gold. If you’re in the market for 2 bulls to run with a larger group of cows and come out with a very uniformed, powerful set of calves, make sure to give these two bulls a hard look. Don’t miss out on L57’s outstanding index values of top 3% API and top 10% TI.

It’s not a surprise that these 2 resemble each other so much as they’re both sired by GPS and their dams are both sired by High Road. He holds the title of highest gaining bull while on test this year and he also holds the title of heaviest adjusted weaning weight in the Simmental division. He flat gets it done when you’re talking about performance but still manages to be incredibly eye appealing and sound. He’s not overly large framed but might be the widest butted bull in the pen. These two powerful studs come to you as maternal brothers to one of the most physically dominant bulls we’ve ever raised, LRSF High Life H64, and are sired by the perennial breed leader for registrations in the Angus breed, Deer Valley Growth Fund. It’s really easy to see why Growth Fund has been so popular when you see his progeny like this in the flesh. They are wide, deep and as easy fleshing as they come with great structure and power. Vanguard K252 ET is very reminiscent of his brother High Life in terms of his overall mass and is a bull we feel could have a significant impact on the breed. Whenever we have visitors come through the cattle, he’s the bull that instantly catches their attention when analyzing the group of long yearlings. Both bulls have a lot to offer and we can’t wait to share them with you.

With these 2 full brothers, we have a pair of incredibly stout and wide based bulls who are definitely going to stamp their progeny with the same sort of muscle and thickness needed to add pounds to a calf crop. K276 is going to be very useful on a group of heifers while not sacrificing growth and K255 is going to compliment a group of cows with the added power everyone is looking for. Like a number of other bulls in this catalog, their donor dam 319A was a tremendous producer for us and we have 3 full sisters to these bulls retained in our fall group of heifers who are right at the top of the group.

Two more full ET brothers out of the Nellie B119 donor, this time sired by the ever-popular Pay Pal. In Pay Pal’s first crop of bulls, there were 23 sons sold for an average of over $9800. That sort of consistent, high-value generating ability is hard to come by no matter which breed of cattle you follow. Both of these bulls display the typical Pay Pal qualities; heavy muscle pattern, correct designed and great feet & leg structure. If you’re looking for a couple of bulls to throw in with a larger group of cows and get consistent, high growth calves, make sure you give these two bulls a hard look.

Here’s a couple of full ET brothers who can add some pounds to calves while still giving you great maternal traits. They’re sired by the very popular Saguaro bull from Bar T Bar Ranches in NM and they’re out of our top-notch Nellie B119 donor. B119 was a tremendous producer for us for many years and raised many top selling progeny, including a full ET brother to these bulls who sold last year to Taubenheim Gelbvieh of NE

K291 is a full ET brother to LRSF Smokey K231 who sold last year to Kem Chambers of NC for $8250 and from all reports is doing a tremendous job. With the likes of Pay Pal and the 77B donor backing both bulls up, it’s easy to see why. 77B was our pick of Gustin’s open heifers born in 2014 and has been a tremendous producer for us throughout her life with 31 registered progeny, 15 of those as bulls who made our sales over the years and 13 daughters being retained as replacement females. Look for this guy to continue that legacy of maternal power and longevity.

Daily Double K302 marks another high-quality Frontrunner son stemming from the Rylee line of cows, just the same as lots 25 & 26 in the yearling bull section of this catalog. His dam is a usefully designed female with excellent feet and a very youthful udder for her age. And as she’s a direct daughter of the timeless Rylee U810 donor, you can bank on her maternal and physical superiority. As a purebred Gelbvieh bull, K302 features a very intriguing set of EPDs led by top 10% growth, top 20% STAY, top 3% MARB and top 1% FPI all while remaining at breed average for calving ease.

A true sale feature, Generation K300 ET is one of the stoutest and most complete purebred red Gelbvieh bulls we’ve ever raised. From the moment he hit the ground, we’ve been impatiently waiting to share him with the world. We were absolutely thrilled when this guy hit the ground and was red since he’s sired by the black bull Eminence and out of 94D, there was no guarantee we were going to get a red calf. When you study him in the pen, he’s as physically impressive as you’ll find in the purebred red Gelbvieh genepool and with 94D being his donor dam, you know he’s the real deal out of a cow with a long list of highly sought after progeny. He’s wide, deep, soft, sound and comes down on terrific feet and legs. He’s fluid in his movement, correct in his lines and doesn’t leave much to be desired in terms of phenotype. And when you turn to his data, he continues to impress with top 40% CED, 25% BW, 35% WW, 4% STAY, 30% MARB and 25% FPI, all as a homozygous polled 94% purebred contributing 50% Gelbvieh to his offspring. Generation K300 will likely be one of the top red purebred bulls to sell this spring so don’t miss out on adding his tremendous potential to your herd.

If you’re in the market for an attractive, super easy going purebred Gelbvieh bull, take a hard look at this guy. Pinball K263 is a direct son of the outstanding 94D donor and is sired by past Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity winner, PHG Eminence E02, giving him tremendous power and predictability in his pedigree. And as I stated above, he’s about as eye appealing and easy going as you’re going to find. For the most part, we handle our fall born calves less than our springs so they tend to be a little more standoffish. However, this guy is the total opposite and is just a big old tomcat. Easy to handle and easy on the eyes, an excellent combination.

Our lone Red Angus long yearling bull is really interesting breeding piece with a great deal of high-quality full siblings to help predict his future as a sire. He’s a full brother to our lead-off Red Angus bred heifer, lots 93-94 and displays many of the same qualities as his sisters; long necked, big middled and is very sound from an overall structure standpoint. Back in November, another full sister to K258 sold on the Reds on the Prairie sale in Brookings and brought $10,000 going to Schafbuch Red Angus in IA. This bull’s value can already be seen in his siblings so don’t miss out on adding those reliable revenue generating traits to your herd.

Browning K304 is the prototypical Gunner son; wide, deep, soggy and sound. Gunner has been siring some of best red Gelbvieh cattle for a few years now and has continued that tradition with K304. As I go through the group of long yearlings, he’s a bull that continues to improve every day and is one I continually find myself admiring. As a homozygous polled, purebred Gelbvieh bull with top 30% growth traits, he’s going to work extremely well on a group of Red Angus influenced cows to create a group of outstanding feeder calves with the full punch of F1 heterosis.

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Breeding Legacy The cattle in this catalog are part of the legacy started by our great-grandfather and his brother who homesteaded on this ground in 1896. They built the foundation that was continued by our grandfather Wally and then by our dad Mark. He started using artificial insemination in 1977 and then embryo transfer in 2004. Looking back, many of the cattle in our herd can trace back to those first AI sires Dad used and represent nearly 50 years of focused genetic selection coupled with the aggressive use of available technologies. Today, we AI over 300 females and implant over 100 embryos annually to provide the best possible genetics we can to help add value to our customers operations. These endeavors do take time and hard work but if our efforts can improve the bottom line for our customers, we will continue to do them for your benefit and ours. Page 32

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Gelbvieh Donor Female

CMR Sunshine 94D Theres been many times lately when I’ve thought we’re out of minds for letting this cow go but ultimately our loss is your gain. Sunshine 94D is the epitome of what a production cow should be; tremendous track record of progeny, excellent udder quality, superior foot structure, outstanding overall design from every angle, very easy keeping, wonderful maternal instincts and the list goes on and on. We feel this cow is one of the very best red Gelbvieh females in the country, if not the best and she still has a ton to offer her new owner. We’ve flushed 94D 9 times over the last 3 years and she’s produced 11 embryos on average. We’ve implanted most of those eggs and with many of her daughters entering production, we feel the time is right for someone else to capitalize on her outstanding production ability as she’s still only an 8 year old cow. We flushed 94D back in June of 2023 and she hit her highest production total of 25 grade 1 embryos. We then turned her out with our leading Red Angus herdsire, PIE Quarterback 0109 who sired one of our best Red Angus bulls this year, lot 51. Sunshine 94D sells bred to PIE Quarterback 0109 and ultrasound indicates a due date of May 5, 2024. Selling full possession and 50% embryo interest with the option to double your bid and own 100% embryo interest.

If we weren’t offering 94D as a sale feature this year, Rylee K224 would be hands down the most prized female we have for sale. With her combination of Pay Pal and a Leverage sired dam, she is very closely related to our 2 high selling bulls from last year, Itasca K192 and Voyageur K182, with the same sort of power, soundness and unbeatable disposition as those bulls possessed. She’s really the whole package and a female that will be missed around the farm. Rylee K224 was AI bred on May 12, 2023 to JKGF All American J109. She sells ultrasound confirmed safe to her AI date and will have a calf at side on sale day. Whether this calf is a bull or heifer, it’s going to be one of the most genetically superior individuals in the purebred Gelbvieh genepool with the phenotype to stand out in any herd. We are retaining the right to 2 flushes at our expense and the buyers convenience with a minimum of 6 transferrable embryos per flush.

Fortune K74 is another very solid Pay Pal daughter with great depth of body and power in a more moderate framed package than some of our Pay Pals. She’s out of a very productive young cow whose first calf sold in 2021 to Rick Stormo and her most recent calf sells in this sale as lot 33. Look for this female to have a similar production trajectory with the added punch of Pay Pal. Fortune K74 sells bred to LRSF Cooperation K27 and ultrasound indicates she’s carrying a heifer calf due April 8, 2024.

Heidi K97 ET is a direct daughter of our Heidi 7203 donor who we purchased from Jacobson Red Angus. The 7203 cow is the epitome of easy fleshing and that comes through in all of her progeny . A maternal sister to K97 entered our donor program in the spring of 2023 based on that same fleshing ability coupled with a stellar track record of production and excellent maternal traits. Heidi K97 ET sells bred to PIE Quarterback 0109 (RAAA 4390443) and ultrasound indicates a due date of May 5, 2024.

Larson’s Lost River Livestock Commercial Bred Heifers

With the US cowherd continuing to remain at historically low levels and with all indications pointing towards a reluctance to expand, feeder calves and bred females are likely to only increase in value over the next 2-3 years. With that being said, these females represent a tremendous opportunity to expand a producers herd at lower prices because if the market holds true over the next few years, they are only going to increase in value and just think of what their calves will be worth. Like last year, there are group of heifers here that are home raised and a group that was purchased from our longtime customers, the Schimming Brothers in ND. New this year is a group of red heifers purchased from Mike Bode of Bagley. Mike maintained an excellent herd of Red Angus/ Gelbvieh cross cows and his herd has been culled hard over the last few years leaving the mothers to these females as the cream of the crop. Buy with confidence that these females will make excellent mama cows bringing in top notch calves year after year.
