Feeding and Care of Bulls

Lone Oak Cattle would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge “THANK YOU” to Terry Chapman and the students in the beef program at Kirkwood Community College. The yearling bulls arrived at Kirkwood in early October and have been fed together in one pen. Bulls were fed for an average daily gain of three pounds. Weights were taken approximately 30 days apart throughout the feeding period. Thank you, once again, to the Kirkwood crew for the feeding, care and preparation of the bulls.

Volume Discount

Purchases of 3 bulls or more will receive the following discounts: 3 bulls purchased will receive a 3% discount on your purchase. Each additional bull purchased will receive an additional 1% discount, up to 10 bulls with a 10% discount. To receive the discount, purchases must be made by the same buyer and verified by the transfer of registration paper to that buyer.

Catalog and Photos

Birth weights were purposely omitted from the catalog on our Embryo Transfer bulls. We feel they are mostly reflective of the recip dam's genetics, and should NOT be used to determine if a bull is suitable for cows or heifers. The Genomic Enhanced EPD's will be MUCH more accurate! (They were, however, all between 66 and 94 pounds) These numbers are represented with an asterisk (*).

Breeding Season Guarantee

DEFINITIONS FOR DATA USED IN SALE BOOK ARE PROVIDED ON PAGE 16.

Kelsie Bickett, kr.bickett@gmail.com, Catalog Brad Hook, Photos Buyers of all bulls selling for $3,000 or more that are injured during the first breeding season will have a credit at the next Lone Oak bull sale, at the value of the purchase price minus the salvage value. Contact us promptly so the decision to return the bull to us, or to sell the bull for salvage, may be made. A breeding season being defined as a 90 day period following the first turn-out of the bull. In the event of death of a bull during the first breeding season, a 25% credit of the sale price will be applied at the next Lone Oak sale.

focus here remains the same, to “ Our produce moderate, fertile, performance cattle that can excel across all environments.”

Lone OaK CattLe Sixth Annual Production Sale March 17, 2018

Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Our family would like to welcome you and your family to our Sixth Annual Production Sale. Thank you to all who have supported us and allow us to continue to live our PASSION! It is truly a joy each day to be working with those you love. Dad and Mom continue to help, and I could never thank them enough. Both for instilling a good work ethic and for raising us in a Godly home! Two of our boys, Cole and Cody, and their wives Nicole and Emily, are currently working with us as well. We couldn’t be happier! Each of the kids help in their own unique way, and Heather continues to be the glue that holds it all together! Our commitment to maternal strength and structure is unwavering. I believe this year’s bulls and females are the highest quality we have ever offered. As you will notice the number of commercial bulls has increased. Upon the recommendation of a great cowman and friend, we own an exciting young sire with Dave and Rhonda Lensegrav. For the first time this year, we are offering several of his sons. We hope you appreciate them as much as we do. The offering this year will sell in a typical auction format. Please register for a buyer number upon arrival and pick up a sale order and supplement sheet with ultrasound information. Video monitors will be set up, and videos will play while animals sell. Live lots will be penned outside for viewing prior to the sale. Videos of the bulls will be available approximately two weeks prior to sale day at loneoakcattleiowa.com. Please feel free to visit with us prior to sale day. We would really like to learn more about your herd so that we can offer suggestions as to which bulls/females may be the best fit for your goals and needs. Thanks for your consideration! God Bless,

Eric Ehresman “...choose this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord!” Joshua 24:15

Lone OaK CattLe Sixth Annual Production Sale

Offering

March 17, 2018

Female

This year for the first time we are offering a few select open heifers for your appraisal. They were all raised right here, both from AI and our natural service sires. They will be offered for sale in small groups, and the buyer will have the option to load these up and haul them home on sale day or leave them here with us to be cared for and bred. If the buyer chooses to leave them, after settlement, they will be turned back in with our own, synchronized, and AI’d around May 20th and pasture exposed to our proven calving ease bulls for 65 days. Generally, at least 60% of the females will settle AI. In the event that a heifer fails to conceive, Lone Oak Cattle will refund the purchase price of that female. Buyer can pick up bred heifers between Sept 1st and 15th. An additional $500/head will be due at that time.

Selling

Heifers

Lots 61-73 are all 2-year-old bred heifers. The black heifers were pasture exposed to three outstanding black balancer calving ease bulls. 2-year-old red heifers were pasture exposed to a top Red Angus son of Bieber Hard Drive.

All heifers should calve by 4-30-2018.

Cows

Selling

Lots 74-95 were pasture exposed to the same herd sires that the sale bulls are sired by. These cows are due before 5-27- 18. Over 60% of these females are by cows that have raised a sale bull or are one themselves!

Lot 64 | Bred Heifer

All cows should calve by 5-27-2018.

Crossbreeding is

Lone OaK CattLe Sixth Annual Production Sale

SMART & EASY

March 17, 2018

with Gelbvieh and Balancer®.

Crossbreeding has been utilized in the cattle industry for many years and for good reason. Crossbreeding provides several benefits including those seen from individual heterosis, maternal heterosis and overall greater lifetime profitability. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program adds productivity, longevity and profitability with crossbred cows and hybrid bulls.

Crossbreeding Increases Performance. The crossbred female is 30 percent more productive over her lifetime. More productivity and added longevity equates to less frequent replacement needs. How do crossbred females perform better? It’s all in the heterosis, or hybrid vigor, described as the increase in performance of the crossbred animal compared to the advantage average of the straight-bred parents. Heterosis impacts traits with low heritability. Reproduction is one of those traits that is lowly heritable and can be enhanced by crossbreeding. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer maternal influence in a crossbreeding system offers increased longevity, added fertility, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics also offer increased growth, docility, smaller mature cow size and reaching puberty at an earlier age.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® in a Crossbreeding Program. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle excel in traits such as growth, stayability, and productivity. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program can help increase profitability of an operation through added pounds and better efficiency as well as heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle. Balancer hybrids offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and the proper blend of British and Continental genetics in your cow herd in one simple and easy crossbreeding program. Registered Balancer genetics combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle leanness, fertility, longevity, and moderate mature cow size with the carcass qualities of Angus.

Genetics and Programs for Commercial Cattle Business. How well do you really know your cows? Get to know them better through Smart Select Service. Smart Select Service is an online record management database that gives the commercial producer, regardless of breed, genetic tools generated from their cows’ records. These tools can then be used to make sound breeding decisions that will identify the cows that will increase herd productivity and profitability. For more information on this and other services, please visit www.gelbvieh.org.

As we use Gelbvieh in our system the number one thing we see is added cow longevity. We are going to get cows that stay in the herd longer. They will not only be fertile, but functional well past 10 years of age.” Bill Tucker, Tucker Family Farms, Amherst, Va,

What is the benefit of

GENOMIC ENHANCED? How Genomic-Enhanced EPDs Impact Bull Buying Decisions.

American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) provide Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders and their commercial producers the ability to more accurately identify young individuals with the right genetics needed to accelerate genetic improvement in their respective herds. GE-EPDs result in more accurate EPDs for bulls and females two to four years sooner when compared to using pedigree and performance information alone. The information can be used to more accurately select sires that excel in feedlot and carcass traits or choose bulls that can be used on replacement heifers with increased confidence. Bottom line, GE-EPDs allow bull buyers to make smarter, better informed bull and female buying decisions backed by more accurate EPDs. This saves time and money, reduces risk and accelerates the rate of genetic progress. Contact the AGA to find out more about GE-EPDs by calling 303-465-2333 or visiting the AGA website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/education/epdresearch/research.html.

FEEDER PROFIT INDEX (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stay-ability and calving ease.
