CattLemen & cattLewomen –– It is with renewed optimism that we welcome you to our 2017 production sale. The political ads have finally subsided, the cattle market has stabilized, and the future looks promising again! Our focus here remains the same, to produce moderate, fertile, performance cattle that can excel across all environments; as well as, to make the business easier, more fun, and profitable for you. The maternal strengths of Gelbvieh, like milk, fertility, and early puberty, translate directly into dollars in your pocket. The influence of Angus, both Red and Black, provide added calving ease and carcass qualities. HETEROSIS is the only free thing in the industry and cattle continue to be sold by the pound. If you have british influence females, a high percentage continental bull may be a good fit. If continental mammas, maybe a low percentage works. You will see, this year, for the first time, we are offering a few Sim influenced hybrids for your appraisal. The offering this year will sell in a typical auction format. Please register for a buyer number upon arrival on sale day and pick up a sale order sheet. Video monitors will be set up, and videos will play while animals sell. Live lots will be penned outside for viewing prior to the sale. Videos of the bulls will be available approximately two weeks prior to sale day at loneoakcattleiowa.com. As you evaluate the bulls and females, please feel free to visit with us about what best will fit your program. If you don’t need anything this year, please come and enjoy a meal and a fun day with our family! Thank you for your business and especially your friendship!
God Bless,
Eric

CROSSBREEDING IS
Smart
Easy
WITH GELBVIEH AND BALANCER®
When making breeding decisions, smart cattlemen consider both the maternal and terminal traits of their breed of choice. The advantages of Gelbvieh sired calves are hard to ignore – additional pounds and profit from more efficient and productive cow herds and heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle.
T
hroughout history of the beef industry, cow-calf producers have turned to crossbreeding to increase efficiencies and profits. The advantages of crossbreeding have not changed. Regardless of your cow herd base, Gelbvieh or Balancer® bulls get you to the profit center of the beef industry in one generation. Use of heterosis to improve production has shown similar advantages to that of hybrid corn in crop production. Numerous research studies have reported up to a 25 percent improvement in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed when crossbred dams produce crossbred calves. There are three main types of heterosis:
Paternal heterosis is the improvement in productive and reproductive characteristics of the bull. Examples of paternal heterosis in a herd sire include: reduced age at puberty, increased in scrotal circumference, higher sperm concentration, increased pregnancy rate and greater servicing capacity. The greatest benefits of a crossbreeding program are through direct, maternal heterosis with a crossbreed cow – increased fertility, better calf survivability, heavier weaning weights, and greater cow longevity. “Crossbred females are 30 percent more productive over their lifetimes,” said Dr. Larry Cundiff, Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Clay Center, Neb. A planned crossbreeding program can add more than $1,000 over the life of a crossbred cow. MARC studies have proven crossbred cows reduce breakeven production costs by as much as 10 percent. Other research shows the average crossbred female remains in the herd about two years longer. Many crossbreeding systems are complicated. It takes multiple pastures and intense management to get the most value out of some crossbreeding systems. The American Gelbvieh Association’s SmartCross® system is different. With the SmartCross system, a Gelbvieh or Balancer bull can be used on any cow herd base to get you to the profit center of the beef industry in one mating.
Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents. Increased weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are examples of individual heterosis in crossbred compared to straightbred calves. Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and of her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include: younger age at puberty, increased calving rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity, and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime.

FEEDER PROFIT INDEX (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Johnny Hemelstrand
Johnny Hemelstrand went to be with the Lord August 27, 2016 when his battle with cancer ended. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me...” When confronted with the trials of this world, it is a comfort to remember we have a compassionate God in control. Because my dad chose to trust in God, not one burden afflicts him today. He is presently experiencing the fulfillment of John 14, when Jesus also said, “...I am going to prepare a place for you...that you also may be where I am.” It’s been a privilege to be this man’s daughter, and I look forward to the day we will be reunited. I treasure the legacy he leaves us, as we remember his perseverance and focus on overcoming circumstances. The strong character we witnessed in him, encourages us to stand for what we believe in. The earthly passions he held for the outdoors and hunting continue to live in his grandsons. As well, his granddaughters share his gift for telling stories (maybe with a little more honesty). Thank you God for my Dad!
