The Timely Topic of Fertility By John Carrel
I
know the focus of this month’s Gelbvieh World is not fertility, but on our ranch we are about halfway done calving, so the topic very timely. At this point in the calving season we’re a little short on sleep, yet the rewards outweigh the fatigue.
The fertility exhibited by the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed is truly something we need to shout about. After all, what good is a well thought-out breeding program if it doesn’t result in a pregnancy and ultimately a live calf. We just finished calving a group of cows I bred to a Gelbvieh bull I purchased one cane of semen (10 straws) on. I realize this doesn’t happen very often, but every straw resulted in a pregnancy and ultimately a live calf. To me that is exciting. Not only the conception rate, but also just seeing those new calves bouncing around on the feed ground is a great feeling. I know we have to treat our operations as businesses, but it sure helps to be doing something you enjoy. I realize everyone’s breeding seasons vary, but in our case after we AI we turn out the herd bulls. In the Gelbvieh groups if we do not pull those bulls by the Fourth of July, I can almost guarantee there will be spring-born heifer calves that will get bred. Gelbvieh cattle are just really fertile and early maturing! On our ranch, one main selection criteria is fertility, and as a result of selecting for this for multiple generations, on top of the Gelbvieh breed’s natural fertility - yes we better get those bulls pulled in a timely fashion. On the paternal side, I recently took an older bull to one of our local studs to get collected. After they jumped him twice they said I could load him up and head home. I asked, “What if he doesn’t freeze and if so, I would like to leave him here.” Their reply was, “Oh he’s a Gelbvieh; he will freeze.” So off to home I went and the next day they texted me to let me know they had froze 260 straws. Once the calves are on the ground, it is hard to

beat the maternal instincts of the Gelbvieh cow. They are not usually overly aggressive but are good mothers. I don’t like the cow that repeatedly knocks her calf down in the snow or pushes it under the fence. Then when the calf does find the teat, there is plenty of milk as a reward. The temperature has been below zero here the last two nights and it is critical those calves get up right away and get that first blast of colostrum. Once they have done this we usually put them in the hot box to warm up and finish drying, then back to momma who is glad to see her baby has been returned. We are busy enough during calving that any hiccup in the process really slows us down and creates a lot of extra and unnecessary work. Once all is good we pair them out in groups of 70 to 80 pairs. Therefore, those cows must be adept at keeping track of their calves. Those Gelbvieh mothers usually know where they planted that calf and when it is time to go find Junior for a bite to eat. One of our key steps in cowherd fertility involves getting the two-year-old heifers bred back so they stay within the normal calving cycle. If there is any place they are going to fall back it is at this critical juncture in their life. They are raising their first calf, still growing, their teeth are changing and yet we expect them to cycle right back. It seems like if they don’t breed right back, it is hard to get them caught back up. We all know how costly it is to have a cow fall out of production at three years of age. Breeding back is also an area where Gelbvieh excel. Breed-back ability leads to longevity in your herd and ultimately a productive cow for her entire life, which is what we are after. I like being able to say, “Throw that older Gelbvieh cow in the bunch, she knows the routine, she has been here forever.” D

Getting Out into the Industry By Megan Slater
W
ith so much keeping us busy these days, it is easy to stay focused on just what we have going on or only the things in our own businesses. However, being successful in the beef industry means doing more than just raising cattle, it is getting out into the industry and taking advantage of new opportunities. Attending industry events and being involved in an organization whether it be your local, state, or even national cattlemen’s associations, breed improvement organizations, beef councils, or whatever your interest is, can be beneficial for several different reasons. The first is it is a way to keep up on industry issues. Today’s beef industry faces more and more challenges every day. The industry faces transportation and hauling issues, water and land issues, and one of the biggest challenges coming ahead, “fake meat”, not to mention various regional challenges impacting producers across the country. Being at least aware of these issues is important because many of them affect each of us within the industry. Being involved and attending industry events also allows the opportunity to learn new things. Whether from a cattlemen’s college or symposium-type event or just talking with others and learning how they do things. Gaining knowledge is always something that can help us better ourselves and our businesses. “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better” – Maya Angelou. With today’s fast-paced modern beef industry, help your operation succeed by becoming more knowledgeable on current industry practices, challenges, and opportunities. One of the single most important parts of being involved in organizations outside of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed is the endless networking opportunities. When you are at an event you never know whom you will meet or have the opportunity to introduce yourself to. You never know if you will meet a commercial producer looking for a bull for the next breeding season or someone who can help buy your

customer’s calves. Networking and getting out to industry events is a way to market your business and get more people familiar with what you have to offer. For these same reasons, it is important for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) to go to industry events. One of our most important tasks, and a goal in the AGA’s Meeting Modern Industry Demands Strategic Plan, is to gain market share for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. AGA staff works hard to connect with all segments of the industry and create relationships that are beneficial for completing this task. Recently, members of the AGA staff attended the Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show in New Orleans, Louisiana. With over 9,000 in attendance, it is a great place for the AGA to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics and connect with industry professionals to find new ways to better serve AGA members and commercial customers. In addition, the AGA Board of Directors has started to hold their meetings in conjunction with industry events such as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Convention, which is one of the largest state cattlemen’s association’s events, and the Superior Livestock Auction Big Horn Classic feeder calf sale. Doing this not only allows the AGA board to get experience and learn about different parts of our industry, but is a great way for the AGA to get exposure and make connections with these groups as well. Getting involved and out in the industry doesn’t have to take a lot of your time, but just attending a few events a year will be worth the effort. D

Looking Back on the 48th Annual AGA National Convention By Rebecca Mettler
A
merican Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members and Gelbvieh and Balancer® stakeholders gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 28-30, 2018, during the 48th Annual AGA National Convention, themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar.” Important association business was conducted, brainstorming for the future of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed took place, and attendees were able to add in a little fun to their trip to Music City. The convention, sponsored by GeneSeek® and SweetPro® Premium Feed Supplements, was a well-attended event with 94 AGA members from 20 states and one Canadian province, which placed this year’s attendance above last year’s convention in Wichita, Kansas. Board of director meetings were the first official events of the convention, followed by the Opening General Session. Members were welcomed to convention by Scott Starr, AGA president, and AGA Interim Executive Director Megan Slater gave her state of the association address. Committee meetings were held on Wednesday afternoon and the breed improvement and member education joint meeting was held on Friday morning. This year, committee meetings were well attended and members provided robust dialog regarding important matters of association business.

Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup On Thursday, the commercial beef industry was front and center during the fourth annual Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup educational symposium.
Wednesday night’s Kickoff Reception featured live entertainment by Bradley Brassfield, a Nashvillebased singer.
Cattle Industry Tour Early on Thursday morning the group loaded up on charter buses and took an hour drive to the University of Tennessee’s Middle Tennessee Research and Education Center to tour the bull test station and learn more about the program. The tour provided a great look into one marketing avenue for Tennessee seedstock producers. The bull test station also serves as an educational tool for area beef producers both on the

Darrh Bullock, Ph.D., extension professor, University of Kentucky, kicked off the event giving an overview of the importance of hybrid vigor. Kevin Thompson, director at the Middle Tennessee Research and Education Center provided the group with some valuable

The event was capped off with Craig Uden, Darr Feedlot, Inc., and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association immediate past president, discussed ways to add value to calves and provided an update on the state of the beef industry.
AGA Annual Meeting The AGA Annual Membership Meeting was held on Friday afternoon. Member participation was steady with last year. Association business during the annual meeting included the election of the AGA Board of Directors for 2019 to fill vacant positions due to term expirations. Committee chairs/co-chairs also presented the committee reports.

GW information exchange Transferring Animals When transferring animals to their new owner it is important that the animal(s) ends up in the appropriate account on the AGA Online Registry Service. If you are unsure whether a buyer has an AGA number, simply click the blank box next the buyer field. This will pull up a separate window where you will enter the buyer’s zip code and then click “Find Profiles”. Review the list of members and non-members and once the correct account is found, check the box to the left of the member number. If the buyer does not already have a profile within the registry, click “Click to create new profile” at the very bottom of the page. For assistance transferring animals, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333.
Foreign Payments The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) no longer accepts checks from foreign countries, including Mexico and Canada. AGA international customers are encouraged to pay their bill by logging on to their AGA Online Registry Service account and clicking the red ‘Pay Online Now’ under the account balance to pay online via credit card. Those who do not have access to an online account may call the AGA office at 303-465-2333 to submit credit card payment over the phone.
Billing Statements The AGA sends out month-end statements to all members with locked accounts. Member accounts become locked when there is an outstanding balance on the account for more than 30 days. Once the amount on the account is paid in full the account becomes unlocked.
The AGA does not store credit card information. Bills may be paid online using a credit card via the AGA Online Registry Service or members may send a check or cash to the AGA office and are asked to include a member number and invoice number with payment. For assistance paying a bill or for billing questions, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333.
Updating Contact Information It’s the perfect time to be sure all of your contact information is current on the AGA Online Registry Service. Any contact information such as address, phone, and email address can be easily updated online by simply clicking the pen and pad icon under the options column next to any contact information you need to update. ale Rippey, Rippey Farm, Galax, Virginia, was honored as the American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Commercial Producer of the Year for 2018 during the awards banquet held at the 48th Annual AGA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Gale and his wife Gena were present at the AGA awards banquet to accept the award. Rippey has worked hard to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle over the past 20 plus years. He bought his first Gelbvieh bull in the early 1990s and immediately saw an increase in weaning weight and improved disposition. Rippey took over the family farming operation in 1998 and now has over 300 cows and has added an 500 head stocker calf division. Rippey has built a reputation of selling replacement heifers that are second to none. Rippey’s investment in genetics has paid huge dividends. Roughly 75 to 80 percent of Rippey’s heifers are either retained in the herd or sold as replacement heifers to an ever-growing and loyal customer base. The strong demand for the bred heifers he sells in the fall can be attributed to Rippey’s progressive mindset and the Gelbvieh breed’s positive influence on maternal traits and cowherd efficiency. D

Al and Mary Knapp Inducted into Gelbvieh Hall of Fame
A
l and Mary Knapp of Basehor, Kansas, were inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame for 2019. The induction took place during the awards banquet at the 48th Annual AGA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Dustin Aherin, Phillipsburg, Kansas, presented the award to the Knapp family. He expressed his sincere gratitude towards the couple on behalf of his family and the numerous other individuals throughout the country whose lives have been positively influenced by the Knapps. The AGA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for their lasting contribution to the growth and development of the Gelbvieh breed. Hall of fame inductee selection criterion includes contributions to breed promotion efforts, leadership provided to the association and the breeding of superior genetics that are of great influence within the Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ cattle population. Over the past 22 years the Knapps have had a tremendous impact on the AGA and more importantly, the people within it. While running a successful Gelbvieh operation the Knapps served 16 years as American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) advisors. Al has served on the AGA Board of Directors, and served as AGA president in 2010, In addition, the Knapps currently serve on the American

Breeder of the Year continued from page 16 in the cattle business for over 50 years. The operation consists of over 400 registered Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus females and 500 Gelbvieh and Angus commercial cows. The success of their cowherd revolves around breed-leading herd bulls, an aggressive AI and ET program, and unmatched customer service. Each year Warner Beef Genetics hosts an annual bull sale in the spring and female sale in the fall. They have also partnered with two other breeders from Nebraska and Oklahoma to start a fall bull sale in Texas, with the goal of increasing demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in that area of the country.
Warner Beef Genetics has been a member of the American Gelbvieh Association since 1998. Over the years, Warner Beef has raised several bulls and females that have positively impacted the breed. Dan is a former member of the AGA Board of Directors, serving the association for six years, including time on the executive committee as vice president. As an active member of the AGA, Dan currently acts as the breed improvement committee chair. D

Issue a call for nominations for the AGA Board of Directors in the July Gelbvieh World with the addition of a suggestion to the nomination committee to have at least two more candidates than open spots.

he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) held a special membership meeting on January 12, 2019, at the National Western Stock Show grounds to bring a potential bylaws change to a vote.
Proposed Bylaw: ARTICLE V (Officers) Add an ex-officio position to the AGA Board of Directors. Whereas the immediate past president will serve as a nonvoting member of the AGA Board of Directors and AGA Executive Committee. The proposed bylaw states: G. Ex-Officio The immediate past president whose board term has expired shall serve one year as a non-voting member of the AGA Board of Directors and AGA Executive Committee. If the immediate past president has remaining time on the AGA Board of Directors, they remain a voting member of the Board of Directors and shall serve in an advisory role on the AGA Executive Committee. The proposed bylaw change for Article V section g failed.

embers of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) elected five candidates to the board of directors at the annual membership meeting held November 30, 2018, during the 48th Annual AGA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Newly elected board members are Todd Bickett, Chickamauga, Georgia, and Lori Maude, Hermosa, South Dakota. Re-elected to serve a second term was Andrea Murray, Kingfisher, Oklahoma; Randy Sienknecht, Gladbrook, Iowa; and Jeff Swanson, Oxford, Nebraska. Some of John’s other experiences include spending one spring on the Padlock Ranch spring branding wagon. The cowboy crew branded a couple hundred head of calves every day for one month.
J
ohn Carrel of Columbus, Montana, is the 2019 American Gelbvieh Association president. John, and his wife Laurie, live just outside of Columbus where they operate HC Cattle. They have two children. Their son Oliver is a sophomore in college, and lives in California. Their daughter Susan is currently a senior in high school, and plans to attend college in Georgia beginning later this year. John grew up on the FL Ranch near Birney, Montana, which is 50 miles northeast of Sheridan, Wyoming. His parents, Jack and Nancy Carrel, raised four children there. John’s brother Bill, runs the home ranch, and their mother, who is now 85, still lives on the FL Ranch as well. Both of John’s other siblings are world-class horse trainers. Charlie lives near Sheridan, Wyoming, and sister Sarah Clifford lives near Carmel, California. One of his interesting and unique experiences is that John managed the Beartooth Ranch for Mel Gibson for 15 years. This was John’s first exposure to the breed as Gelbvieh was one of the principal breeds at Beartooth.

Today, John and Laurie operate HC Cattle and raise, Gelbvieh, Balancer®, and Angus cattle for breeding stock. John calves out the first-calf heifers and recipients at the place where they live near Columbus. Laurie produces the bull sale catalog, and helps in a multitude of other ways. Their main ranch is Dutch Hollow Ranch, which is 14 miles north of Columbus. Their hired man, Kenny Anderson lives at Dutch Hollow, which is where the cowherd is wintered, and kept through calving season.
The Carrels have three summer grass leases, which are all in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. These leases include Midnight Canyon, Tipett Rise, and grass on the Beartooth Ranch that John used to manage. Cows and calves are usually ran on the summer leases from May until October, if the weather permits. Cows are usually hauled to summer range, but once they are on the summer leases then everything is done horseback. The Carrels created a partnership with Jim Stampfel to develop and market their Angus bulls. Pine Coulee Bulls, LLC hosts an annual bull sale where they sell approximately 170 bulls.
John and Laurie market their Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls through private treaty sales. John expects to have more Gelbvieh bulls available for sale in the spring of 2020.
What are some of the current challenges facing commercial cattle producers, and how do these challenges present opportunities for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics? “We continue to see increased input costs for all of agriculture, and commodity prices aren’t keeping up, so we need to continually work at being more efficient. Gelbvieh and Balancer help fill that niche here at HC Cattle.” “I’ve visited with commercial producers who are experiencing too many 3 to 5-year-old cows dropping out of the herd due to being open. We know that fertility and longevity are two areas where Gelbvieh excel. Stayability and increasing female retention is critical for these commercial producers to improve their bottom line.” “Another concern of these commercial producers is that they are not weaning enough pounds. They need to be utilizing crossbreeding and benefiting from hybrid vigor. Our crossbred Gelbvieh and Balancer calves always outweigh the straightbred calves.”
What advice or encouragement do you have for AGA members and their customers? “It is important that we as breeders, and as an association, continue to promote the versatility, adaptability, and longevity of the Gelbvieh-influenced cow.” “There always seems to be a market for quality, so we need to keep upping the ante on quality. As seedstock producers, we need to continually improve the genetics we are providing to commercial producers. Many strengths of our breed are in lockstep with what the commercial producer wants. It is crucial that we continue to strive to make Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics a critical component of the commercial sector, and thus the feeding sector. We need to work at building relationships to create pull through demand.” “Producers need to develop relationships with the people who are buying and feeding their cattle so that they can learn how the cattle are performing. This enables both the seedstock provider and commercial operator to select genetics and adjust management practices affecting the end product, thus maintaining a positive relationship with the feedyard.” “It is encouraging to be part of a breed that has so many strengths to offer to the different segments of beef production.” D

lack Gold Genetics of Pritchett, Colorado, captured championship honors in the 2019 People’s Choice Balancer® Bull Futurity. Approximately $20,000 will be awarded to Black Gold Genetics for breeding and exhibiting the futurity champion, BGGR High Definition 8063E.

The People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity is in its ninth year. This year’s event was held January 12, 2019, in the Stadium Arena in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The futurity is organized by Slaughter Sale Management with the purpose of identifying elite young Balancer sires that have potential to be breed leaders.
JRI CEO 254F38 is a 63 percent Balancer, homozygous black, homozygous polled son of MCCA Capitol Hill 516C out of JRI Clementine 254Z8. He is a maternal brother to JRI Probity 254D28, the 2017 Balancer Bull Futurity champion. For three years his dam has qualified for Dam of Merit honors. His 15-year-old maternal granddam, JRI Ms Extra Sugar 254N72, is the dam of Judd Ranch’s multi-trait leading herd sire JRI Secret Instinct 254U83.
BGGR High Definition 8063E was selected champion by the 57 futurity members. He was born December 15, 2017, and is a 63 percent Balancer, red, homozygous polled son of BGGR Blk Gold Payload 6152 out of BGGR 96U. High Definition was part of the first calf crop from the syndicated powerhouse BGGR Payload 6152E. His natural thickness and impressive look made him a crowd favorite. His pedigree is stacked with breed-leading females including CTR 198L. Each futurity member has the opportunity to receive 20 units of semen on the champion Balancer bull.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Ring of Gold Champions
T
hroughout the 2018-2019 show year, Gelbvieh and Balancer® females and bulls competed at shows across the country to earn points for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Ring of Gold program. Each year the qualifying animals are ranked at the conclusion of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer show at the National Western Stock Show. This year a total of six shows were included in the Ring of Gold tally. The AGA established the Ring of Gold program to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve grand champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show. To honor those animals that have risen to the top during the show season, The Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull, Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout the year. Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. The 2018-2019 Ring of Gold qualified shows were: Iowa State Fair, Kentucky State Fair, Missouri State Fair, American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the National Western Stock Show. The following is a list of the top three animals in each Ring of Gold division. In order to qualify for recognition, animals must have earned points in at least two Ring of Gold shows throughout the calendar year.

he 22nd Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity was held on January 12, 2019, in the Stadium Arena in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado. Gelbvieh breeders and supporters initiated the futurity to increase participation in the National Gelbvieh Show, the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale and to identify the most useful young sires in the Gelbvieh breed. The futurity event is managed by Mitchell Marketing Services. JRI In Demand 254F839 ET was the winner of this year’s futurity, owned and exhibited by Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kansas. Circle S Ranch, Canton, Kansas, and Genetics West, Berthoud, Colorado, exhibited the two runner-up bulls, listed in no particular order. JRI In Demand 254F839 ET received the most votes after two rounds of voting to beat out the six other entries in the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. In Demand is a 94 percent purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by JRI Secret Instinct 254U83. He was born on January 19, 2018 and is homozygous black, homozygous polled and is the ET full brother to JRI Secret Powers 254C821, Judd Ranch’s calving ease/beef machine herd sire and one of the breed’s most popular young AI sires. His dam, JRI Ms Poppy Love 254Z72, has been honored with the Dam of Merit award each year of her eligibility, which denotes the fertility and longevity the Gelbvieh breed is known for. CIRS Right Time 22YF, owned by Circle S Ranch, Canton, Kansas was one of the runner-ups. Right Time is an 88 percent purebred Gelbvieh bull sired by DCSF Post Rock Power Built 37B8 with plenty of performance and maternal strength. This bull, born January 30, 2018, is a red, homozygous polled bull out of GGRR Gilly’s CPR Doll 22Y. RTRT Frontier 8006F, entered into the futurity by Genetics West and owned by

Frontier 8006F is the February 6, 2018 son of JKGF Frontier C90 out of DDGF Brandy 4181B. He is a 94 percent purebred heterozygous black, homozygous polled bull. The champion bull sold for $15,000 for full possession and half semen interest in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale held on Sunday evening at the NWSS. Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska, purchased possession of the bull. The Gelbvieh futurity holds a drawing among members to win the proceeds from the sale of the champion bull. Cranview Gelbvieh, Minot, North Dakota, and Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska, won the proceeds from this year’s sale. The futurity is limited to 53 membership slots. Spots only come available when an operation doesn’t renew their membership. This year, two memberships were auctioned off at the futurity final event. Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Scholarship Winner By Jake Renner
T
he Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity awards up to $1,000 to one American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) member each year. The recipient of the 2019 scholarship is Colton Ivers of Austin, Minnesota. Colton is the son of Steven and Rosalie Ivers and currently attends Blooming Prairie High School in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Upon high school graduation, Colton plans to attend Kansas State University majoring in agricultural economics. Colton currently serves as the vice president of leadership on the AGJA Board of Directors. The AGJA is not the only organization where Colton has devoted his time and leadership skills. He is actively involved in his community through 4-H and FFA. His dedication to working with others and devoting his time to the Gelbvieh breed is one to be admired. “I hope to inspire young members everyday by acknowledging their strengths and helping them overcome their weaknesses. Empowering the youth of the AGJA will grow the Association as well as the breed,” says Colton. His dedication to the Gelbvieh breed is recognized from the local level to the national level through his work ethic, communication skills and tenacious desire to promote and educate.

To qualify for this particular scholarship, applicants must be an active member of AGJA, be at least a graduating high school senior through 21 years of age on January 1 of the current year. he Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ Pen Show took place at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, on Sunday, January 13, 2019. A total of 17 pens entered in this year's show and included 14 pens of bulls and three pens of heifers. Quinton Smith, Lebanon, Tennessee, judged both the pen bull and pen heifer shows. Beastrom Ranch, Pierre, South Dakota, exhibited the grand champion pen of three Balancer heifers in the inaugural Gelbvieh and Balancer heifer pen

show. The champion pen consisted of three March 2018 calves. The average weight among the pen was 945 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3 pounds. All heifers entering the pen shows are ultrasound scanned at the time of check-in, which took place on Thursday, January 10, 2019. The champion pen had an average ribeye area of 11.24 square inches, 3.88% IMF, and 0.27 inches of back fat. The reserve grand champion pen of three Balancer heifers was exhibited by T Bar S Cattle Company, Billings, Missouri. All three females in this pen were November 2017 calves with an average weight of 961

This set of bulls had average ultrasound scan data of 14.66 square inches of ribeye, 3.39% IMF, and 0.26 inches of back fat.
Warner Beef Genetics was presented with a special award for winning the champion Balancer pen of five bulls in honor of Rod MacLennan, a pioneer in the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. The grand champion pen of five Balancer heifers was exhibited by Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska. The pen consisted of five late-January to early-March 2018 heifers. Average weight for this pen was 874 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 2.6 pounds. The ultrasound data revealed an average ribeye area of 12.41 square inches, 4% IMF, and 0.35 inches of back fat. Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kansas, exhibited the grand champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. The champion pen consisted of three January 2018 born bulls. This pen had an average weight of 1,248 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.4 pounds. All pen bulls are ultrasound scanned at the time of checkin. This pen's ultrasound scan data averaged a ribeye area of 15.63 square inches, 3.5% IMF, and 0.26 inches of back fat. The reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls was exhibited by Bar Arrow Cattle Co, Phillipsburg, Kansas. This pen consisted of February 2018 bulls and had an average weight of 993 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.4 pounds. This set of bulls

In the Balancer pen show, Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kansas, struck again and exhibited the grand champion pen of three Balancer bulls. This pen consisted of one January 2018 born bull and two February 2018 born bulls that averaged 1,180 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.5 pounds. The pen's average ultrasound scan data is as follows: ribeye area of 14.45 square inches, 3.33% IMF and 0.31 inches of back fat. The reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls was exhibited by Boehler Gelbvieh, Orleans, Nebraska. Their pen of February 2018 born bulls averaged a weight of 1,016 pounds and 3 pounds weight per day of age. This pen averaged 13.11 square inches for ribeye area, 3.8% IMF and 0.40 inches of back fat with their ultrasound scan data. Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska exhibited the grand champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This pen included four February-born and one March 2018 born bull. This champion pen had an average weight of 1,165 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.5 pounds. The pen's average ultrasound scan data was 13.69 square inches for ribeye area, 3.55% IMF, and 0.31 inches of back fat. Judd Ranch Inc., Pomona, Kansas, exhibited the reserve champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This pen included three January and two February 2018 bulls. This pen averaged a weight of 1,148 pounds and had an average weight per day of age of 3.3 pounds. Opportunities Begin with a Connection By Jesse Henson
T
he 2019 Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show was held January 30 through February 2, 2019, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Every year, leaders from the industry gather to promote new innovation and business to cattlemen. The AGA, teaming up again with International Genetic Solutions (IGS), set up a display at the trade show. Grace Vehige, American Gelbvieh Junior Association president, and I were fortunate to be given the opportunity to represent the junior association at the event. It was very refreshing to see the number of people that stopped by to receive information about the Gelbvieh breed. While in New Orleans, I picked up several key points to bring back to the juniors and to share with you. “It’s not necessarily what you know, it’s who you know.” I’ve heard this phrase many times, and I couldn’t agree with it more. The older I get, the more I realize how important connections are. We need knowledge, but it’s the connections we create that put us in positions where our knowledge can be used. My advice to other juniors is to be aware of the fact that any connection you make has the potential to benefit you in the future. I think there are two parts to this statement. First, any opportunity to meet new people or to acquire new knowledge needs to
be acted upon. Secondly, no matter what you do, someone is watching how you interact with others and is evaluating your work ethic. Those who are observing could be future employers or someone who could impact your future career, which means we need to put full effort into anything we are a part of. While sitting through a dinner for young leaders in New Orleans, the question was asked, “What is one regret you have that has affected your life up to this point?” As I sat and pondered this question, the main regret that came to mind was that I wished I would have made a greater effort to strengthen the connections I have made up to this point in my life, and I wish I would have taken more of the opportunities that were offered to me. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity the American Gelbvieh Association gave me to learn more about new trends and ideas the livestock industry has to offer. During the three years I have served on the AGJA board, I have been exposed to many opportunities similar to what I experienced at the NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans. These events have helped sculpt me into the person I am today and will be a big part of the success I achieve in the future. The AGJA offers a tremendous amount of opportunities for juniors, and my advice is to take advantage of as many of them as possible. he American Gelbvieh Junior Association’s (AGJA) heifer raffle, powered by the donation of a heifer from Rippe Gelbvieh, Hubbell, Nebraska, has been an annual fundraising effort for the AGJA for the past several years. Opportunities such as this one for members, both young and experienced, would not be possible without the generous contributions from the Rippe family and those who purchased tickets. Big Decisions By Will Fiske
A
gricultural businesses make thousands of decisions per day. Most of these decisions are routine, and many are underpinned by data. Decisions that go beyond day-to-day operations have the capability to shift the course of a business and even have a profound effect on an industry. These would be known as “BIG DECISIONS.” These decisions set the course of the business and are of high value and high stakes. In agriculture, specifically the cattle business, a big decision often comes heavily leveraged with financial risk. The outcome of each decision is visited frequently and subjected to circumstances that can be out of our control. However, the silver lining to each decision is the fact that a historical chain of events is created, and each event has an associated data value. This data value is essential to improving the outcome of the next big decision and ultimately provides a management tool to capture market advantages. In the production sector of the cattle industry, a single mating decision can have an average impact of nearly a decade. The mating which results with a replacement female in production will cause an immediate average impact of 6 to 10 years. The same mating annually dictates not only the performance of the female as a mother and individual throughout her productive life, but also determines the available genetic potential to be complimented for the improvement of future progeny. A mating is just one example of a big decision that carries an associated negative risk, which can be reduced with data in the form of expected progeny differences (EPDs). Seedstock breeders as well as commercial producers both have access to data that is directly linked to significant areas of their operation’s profitability. Regardless of whether we choose to embrace it or ignore it, we now live in an age of data-based decisions. When we consider data-based management decisions the simple questions remain: What is the data to worth to you? What cost is associated with

collecting the data? How can your operation economically capitalize on data collection on a short-term and long-term basis?” Before getting overwhelmed with the task collecting data, consider how to integrate practical data collection procedures that are friendly to the daily farming/ranching atmosphere. Based on the available labor of each operation and the responsibilities of individuals involved, the most effective systemed data approach will be customized to fit each operation. A systemed approach can be broken down into three main areas: 1. The act of physically collecting the data, including the consideration what tools and amount of time are required to collect the highest quality data. 2. The act of recording the data, while taking time to consider what method will be used to record the data. Will it be a traditional hand-written copy or a digital version? 3. When will the data be submitted? This can be a two-stage process. When will the data be uploaded into the farm/ranch’s management software to enhance management decisions, and when will the data need to be uploaded to the breed association. Step three is often overlooked, but remains very important. The timeliness of data submission determines when it’s incorporated into the weekly genetic evaluation. Thus, providing the most upto- date EPDs for publishing sale catalogs and/or providing current EPDs to be used for improved breeding and selection decisions. As members of production agriculture we have accepted the fact that we purchase our inputs at retail value and sell our products at market value. However, that doesn’t mean we have to accept great financial risk when we invest in our business. When we consider genetic investment, data analysis, and genetic evaluation provide tremendously valuable opportunities to hedge the financial risk of an operation. Both are tools that provide the means to encourage efficiency, productivity, and ultimately profitability. D

n December 2017 I graduated college, packed my bags the very next day, and moved 937 miles away from the place I called home. To say I was feeling a bit anxious would be an understatement. I started my position with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) the next month and it only took a few days for me realize everything was going to be just fine. From coworkers that operate as team to a membership that is made up of some of the kindest people I have ever met, I knew this could be my new home. Over the past year I have been fortunate to be a part of the growth and success of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed. Leadership has evolved, new programs have been implemented and operations are constantly being improved. It is clear the breed is going places and I can testify to this with the number of ranchers I have had the pleasure to speak to who are inquiring about the breed. People sure are excited to see how Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics can improve their operations. With all this being said, one of the

Last year while at the Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show a commercial producer came up to our booth to inquire about where he can find Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls near him because he heard someone talking about the breed on his plane ride to the convention. It was that simple. Now it’s your turn to share your success stories with your neighbors, on social media, and anywhere you can be heard. Tell people why you use Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics year after year because word of mouth sure does travel. The AGA marketing team and breed promotion committee are always searching for new ways to spread the message, but nothing does as great of a job as a personal testimony. While working for the AGA I learned more than I ever imaged I would, and I am so thankful for my time here. For those of you who don’t know, my last day at the AGA was on February 15. While it was a tough decision to make, it is one I believe is the right step for me. I am excited for a future of watching the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed reach new levels of success. I’ll be sure to share stories of my time spent with the AGA and you should also share your success stories about the breed because “It only takes one voice, at the right pitch, to start an avalanche.” D

The MILK Discussion By Tonya Amen, AGA Breed Improvement Consultant
O
ne of the EPDs that I receive the most questions about is the milk expected progeny difference (EPD), so the topic of this month’s article will include discussion of the milk EPD and its counterpart, the total maternal EPD. Milk and total maternal EPDs are important in bull selection when replacements will be retained in the herd, but they are two EPDs that are sometimes not understood.
Milk EPD: Unlike direct growth EPDs like weaning weight that predict the weight difference in the own progeny of bulls, milk EPDs are expressed slightly differently. Milk EPDs reflect the maternal ability of an animal’s daughters and are expressed as additional pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters due to maternal effects. When choosing the appropriate EPD range for the milk EPD, one needs to consider the feed resources and environment of the operation in which the bulls’ daughters will be expected to perform. In other words, more milk is not necessarily better as heavier milking cows may require more nutritional inputs to maintain body condition and reproductive efficiency. In addition, for commercial producers, breed needs to be an important consideration when evaluating milk EPDs.
Total Maternal (TM) EPD: Like milk EPDs, total maternal EPDs are expressed as the predicted weaning weight differences of bulls’ maternal grand-progeny. Total maternal EPD predicts the total difference in weight of bulls’ daughters’ calves at weaning – due to both the maternal ability of the daughter (milk EPD) as well as the genetics for growth that she passes on (1/2 the weaning weight EPD). Because it includes both direct and maternal impacts on growth, total maternal is the best predictor of how daughters of a bull will perform in terms of weaning heavier calves.

Even if total maternal is not published in a sale catalog, it can be calculated by simple arithmetic: ½ weaning weight EPD + milk EPD = total maternal. To illustrate the differences in weaning weight, milk and total maternal, let’s use the example below. Table 1: Weaning growth EPD example.

Assuming Sire A and B are used in the same environment and bred to genetically similar females, we would expect Sire A’s calves to average 17 pounds heavier at weaning than Sire B’s calves. Now, let’s assume that we retain daughters from both bulls in the herd and they are bred to genetically similar bulls. When weaning time rolls around, we’d expect Sire A’s daughter’s calves to weigh 2.5 pounds more, on average, than Sire B’s daughter’s calves. Indeed, Sire B had a higher milk EPD, and his daughters probably produced more milk than Sire A’s daughters, but that “better” maternal environment provided by Sire B’s daughters was not enough to overcome the genetics for growth that were passed on by Sire A’s daughters. In the BOLT-powered national cattle evaluation that the American Gelbvieh Association participates in through International Genetic Solutions, weaning weight, milk, and total maternal EPDs are a product of a multitrait evaluation. This evaluation uses all performance information on the growth traits (birth through yearling) along with pedigree and genomic information. For most young sires, pedigree along with their own birth, weaning and yearling weights may be all that is available for the evaluation, though many now also have genomic results. It is important to note that in the current model, a negative genetic correlation is used between direct and maternal weaning weight. This means that young animals who are outliers for direct growth (expressed as the weaning weight EPD) may have lower-than average milk EPDs until and unless they have maternal grand-progeny weaning weights that suggest they are curve benders for the traits. A
herd assessment is one credit with many benefits. That’s what I like to tell people when they call in asking about herd assessments. After assigning a credit to the active females in your herd, you are able to register her calf, log data on that calf, and transfer ownership. March 15, 2019, marks the American Gelbvieh Association herd assessment deadline. Members can complete their herd assessments on the AGA Online Registry Service. The AGA practices total herd reporting, which is designed to create consistency and ensure the integrity of the data reported on Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. This makes it necessary to assess every female and record all data on animals, whether it is good, bad or indifferent. A total herd reporting system keeps the data accurate so anyone who utilizes registered Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics can make a reliable choice during the selection process.
The Herd Assessment Process: First you will want to assess all of your Gelbvieh and Balancer (AMGV) breeding-age females. You can find these females in the Herd Management Inventory tab under “Assessment Age”. This tab shows the active females in your herd that are older than 13 months of age. These females will have the “2019” button next to their registration number. Once that is clicked the female will have the credit. For any first calf heifers you will want to record heifer exposure data as well. Either check “PE” for pasture exposed, “AI” is they were artificially inseminated or “NO” is they were not exposed.

It is important to include corresponding breed code letters to the registration number so that the registry will recognize the animal. Females that are not 13 months of age or older can be found in the “Optional Females” tab in Herd Management Inventory. These are the females listed that could potentially have a calf in 2019, but fall out of the age range. A herd assessment credit will be applied when the “2019” button next to each female is clicked.When finalizing your herd assessment this year you will also want to dispose of any females that have been culled or died, so that they can become inactive in the registry. After you have been through all of your females it is important to also dispose of any bulls that are no longer active in your herd. Keep up with your records and keep up with your herd, which is what we encourage our members to do during this busy time of the year. Completing herd assessments before the deadline saves money. Late fees do apply if herd assessments aren’t complete by March 15, 2019. The following penalty fees will be applied to the membership account: 1-30 days late = 5% late penalty 31-60 days late = 10% late penalty 61+ days late = 15% late penalty As always, if you have any questions you can contact the American Gelbvieh Association at the office by calling (303) 465-2333. To assess non-Gelbvieh animals that will produce Gelbvieh-influenced calves, a credit will have to be applied. In order to get those animals into our system, please email the registration number from the breed of origin to the AGA office. AGA Incentive Program
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) continually strives to provide the most accurate data to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced cattle. Increasing the amount of both phenotypic data collected and number of animals with genotypes is essential in further increasing the accuracy of this data. The AGA recognizes that collection of some of this essential data is expensive to collect and therefore the AGA has designed an incentive program for those members who are dedicated to providing such data to the AGA Online Registry Service as well as the accuracy and value of that information. The AGA is offering monetary incentives for members who participate in DNA testing of both bulls and females, gathering feed intake phenotypes and siredidentified carcass data. Each of these incentive programs and how to receive those incentives is detailed below.
DNA Testing Incentives DNA Testing Young Bulls: AGA members who complete a GGP-Low Density (GGP-LD) or GGP-High Density (GGPHD) panel on a minimum of 30 percent of each year’s entire male calf crop will receive a $2 per head rebate on their entire cowherd’s annual herd assessment in the subsequent calendar year. This incentive program begins with the 2018-born male calf crop and herd assessment rebates will be given starting in 2019. Only bulls who are under one year of age when tested will be eligible for the incentive program. DNA Testing Replacement Females: AGA members that complete a GGP-LD, GGP-HD, or GGP-Ultra Low Density (GGP-uLD) panel test on 30 percent of each year’s entire female calf crop will receive a $2 per head rebate on their entire cowherd’s annual herd assessment in the subsequent calendar year. This incentive program begins with the 2018born heifer calf crop and herd assessment rebates will be given starting in 2019. Only females who are under one year of age when tested will be eligible for the incentive program. To receive a DNA testing incentive rebate: 1. Complete DNA testing process through the AGA Online Registry Service on appropriate amount of animals as specified above. 2. Fill out the AGA incentive rebate form found on www.gelbvieh.org. The form must be filled out completely in order to receive the rebate.

3. Submit form to the AGA office via email at info@ gelbvieh.org or by mail. 4. Rebates will be issued after the March 15 herd assessment deadline and are given in the same year the rebate is submitted. Rebates will only be issued for the number of females assessed by the March 15 herd assessment deadline.

Credit for Sire-Identified Carcass Data AGA members that report actual sire-identified carcass data acceptable to the NCE will receive a $4 credit per animal record to their AGA account. • Carcass data must be sire identified or registered animals in sire groups of three head or more. • The data points required include: o Carcass weight o Dressing percent o Ribeye area o Calculated Yield Grade o Marbling score • Credit for sire-identified carcass data will begin with cattle born in 2017 • Member-submitted data used in the NCE will receive a $4 credit for each animal record once the data has been imported into the evaluation. Lead off bull was Lot 30 WOHL FBW1 “Lightning” purebred Gelbvieh 94% black white face homozygous black, polled son of SPFR High Tech 333B and first-calf heifer WOHL FDBW1 (Y353 Impact). This calving ease with growth bull sold for $9,500 to Hoherz Ranch, Mandan, North Dakota, acquiring 2/3 semen interest and full possession. This unique bull garnered attention from commercial and seedstock ranches with Kittle Farms, LLC

of Geraldine, Alabama, purchasing an exclusive seedstock semen package. Lot 27 WOHL F17 “Spring Cricket” purebred Gelbvieh 94% homozygous black, homozygous polled son of SPFR High Tech 333B and out of first-calf heifer WOHL D18 (Y353 Impact) was purchased by Suelter Cattle Company, Lincoln, Kansas. The deep bodied herd sire prospect brought $6,000. Suelter also selected Lot 26 WOHL F35 “Impact Gem” purebred Gelbvieh 94% black, homozygous polled son of LWHF/JKGF Y353 Impact and WOHL C26 (186Y Winter). Another sale highlight was Lot 5 the $5,000 ZIMM F303 “Finch” Balancer 25% son of 3F EPIC 4631 – homozygous black, homozygous polled, out of dam ZIMM A303 (X7 Otto) purchased by Duttenhefner Ranch, Dodge, North Dakota. This Balancer sported curve-bending EPDs and actuals to match that reflected the Zimmerman Ranch bull lineup. Duttenhefner Ranch also selected Lot 10 ZIMM “Flint” F645 Balancer 25% homozygous black, homozygous polled. Volume buyers included; Glenn Axtman, Lyle Brewster, Bernell & Elayne Appledoorn.
